The coarse wool breeds have a very small share in the clothing market due to the difficulty of their weaving and sewing. Herein, we propose a new method for utilization of coarse wool fibers (Barki), after grading and sorting according to handle, fineness, and kemp content to separate the class of fine fleeces and patches with no kemp fibers. Barki wool fibers were then blended with woolen polyester fibers to produce 30:70% and 45:55% wool/polyester woven fabric. The properties of the produced fabrics from Barki wool/polyester yarns were compared with those of Merino wool/polyester fabric 45:55%. The effects of wool type, nature of sewing threads, stitch type, and the number of stitches per centimeter, on the seam slippage as well as other inherent properties of the fabrics, were studied. The results indicate that a fine soft grade of Barki wool could be used in apparel, and the least seam slippage was obtained upon using fabric and stitch from the same type of yarns using 5 stitches/cm. As the ratio of polyester fibers in the blended fabric increases, the seam slippage as well as, crease recovery, and tear strength get better except that for pilling resistance and drapeability.

Few studies related open design to the clothing sector, but none explored how users would experience it. The study reported here aimed to investigate how people with some or without prior sewing knowledge - advanced and amateur users – experience an open design-clothing product. Following four fashion design heuristics, a garment was created and distributed as DIY kits among advanced and amateur users. Data were collected in two stages: assembly and personalization. The results indicate that although skills play a significant role during assembly, other factors, like cross-generational differences and personal taste, influence how users experience an open design product. Furthermore, the study shows that given the necessary support, the open design can be used by a heterogeneous public, amplifying the participation of users with little or without prior sewing skills in clothing co-creation.

Line balancing is always a big problem appearing in industrial production. Manual balancing of industrial sewing products takes a long time to give results, which depends on the experience of the sewing line manager, moreover, the efficiency is not necessarily optimal. Digital conversion will help find a solution to balance the sewing line more quickly, accurately, and optimally. This study presents the statements of the problem of balancing knitted garment lines in the industry with the line balancing process according to the method of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) and BSL-HUST-1 software, which is the software designed and built by our research group. For the balancing calculation, three groups of input data were defined for the comparison of balancing efficiency among the HUST method, the software method, and the method used traditionally by the companies. The line's capacity is determined as the total production amount in a shift, and the shift time is figured accordingly following each factory's rules. Purpose: By combining structural contingency theory and socio-emotional wealth (SEW) theory, this study aims to identify the organizational determinants of collective performance-related pay (PRP) adoption by examining the interplay between a firm's ownership characteristics (i.e. family or non-family ownership) and other organizational characteristics. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopts a quantitative approach, conducting empirical analyses of a longitudinal dataset of 4,222 Italian companies in the manufacturing sector for 2009–2017. The probability of adopting collective PRP schemes is estimated using the average marginal effects of the probit and linear probability models (LPMs). Findings: The results show that family firms are less likely to adopt collective PRP schemes than non-family firms. Moreover, ceteris paribus, firm characteristics such as size, age and past (firm and labor) productivity are important determinants of firms' adoption of collective incentive pay; however, the significance and magnitude of their effects vary depending on a firm's ownership structure. Originality/value: This analysis has two major elements of novelty. First, it increases the knowledge of how organizational contingencies differ in family versus non-family contexts regarding pay decisions. Second, it brings new theoretical perspectives to the pay debate by combining structural contingency theory and SEW theory, thus developing new and fertile theoretical grounds for advancing our understanding of the pay determinants. This study examines the influence of socioemotional wealth (SEW) dimensions on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and innovation performance in family firms. Based on an analysis of a dataset comprising 145 family firms, our findings provide evidence that SEW positively moderates the association between EO and innovation performance. Notably, the dimension (E) emotional attachment of family members within SEW solely drives this interaction effect. Surprisingly, none of the other dimensions exhibit a significant moderating effect on the entrepreneurial orientation–innovation performance relationship. Furthermore, the overall moderation is substantially more pronounced for multidimensional SEW than for unidimensional SEW. Our findings challenge the results of previous studies on the entrepreneurial orientation–performance relationship in family firms, which considered SEW as unidimensional. Traumas are the most important cause of mortality in the pediatric population. Bleeding is an important complication, especially in traumatic brain injuries with coagulation problem addition. Low-velocity penetrating brain injuries may be caused by sewing needles, nails, and knives. There are few studies in the literature for this injury type. The present study investigates the relationship of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis among the western North Pacific (WNP), eastern North Pacific (ENP), and tropical North Atlantic Ocean (TNA) during July–October (JASO) from 1979 to 2019. A coherent interannual variation is found for TC genesis among the southeastern part of the WNP (SEW for brevity), ENP and TNA. When there are more TCs generated over the SEW, TC geneses are more than normal over the ENP, but less than normal over the TNA. Correlation analysis shows there is a significant positive (negative) relationship between the SEW/ENP (TNA) TC genesis and a tripole zonal sea surface temperatures (SST) anomaly distribution among the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, western Pacific and tropical Atlantic Ocean. The zonal tripole SST anomalies provide favorable genesis potential index (GPI) anomalies for TC genesis over the SEW and ENP, but unfavorable GPI anomalies over the TNA. The diagnoses display that the absolute vorticity has the greatest contribution and the contributions of the relative humidity and vertical wind shear terms are secondary to GPI anomalies over the SEW. The positive GPI anomalies are mainly due to a positive contribution of the vertical wind shear and potential intensity over the ENP. The major term contributing to the negative GPI anomalies is the vertical wind shear over the TNA. This study may help to improve seasonal prediction of the TC genesis over the WNP, ENP and TNA. A fully discrete finite difference scheme for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations driven by a 1+1 -dimensional white noise is studied. From the end of the nineteenth century and one hundred years onward, home sewing was an important part of many women's duties, but it was also a pleasure, something that existed parallel with the emerging mass-produced ready-to-wear industry. The paper patterns used for home dressmaking were often sold and distributed through women's magazines. These pattern sections were both a kind of reader service and a conscious strategy to capture the female target group. This article, based on an analysis of three Swedish magazines, is the first in-depth survey of patterns for home sewing of women's clothes in Sweden. The study shows how the magazines adapted to changes in society with increasingly easier patterns and ready-cut fabric for their readers. В статье рассматриваются результаты проведенного сотрудниками Луганского художественного музея научного исследования иконописных памятников церковного искусства конца XVIII – начала ХХ веков на Луганщине. Дана краткая историческая картина развития иконописания в крае. Указаны основные храмы, в которых сосредоточены сохранившиеся до наших дней старинные иконы. Даны описания наиболее выдающихся из них. Выделены две большие группы исследуемых икон: писаные для церквей и небольшие иконы для домашнего богослужения. В каждой из групп выделяется своя иерархия по уровню профессиональной подготовки иконописцев.

We present a method for determining which of a large set of pixels are inside or on the boundary of a polygon. The method works much quicker than the standard method used for points in general and also provides an ordering of the boundary pixels. Once the edge pixels have been chosen and ordered, we move on to the characterization of the edge. We present a method for characterizing the edge slope of digitized images, which is—to a desired tolerance—invariant to rotation. We demonstrate that this characterization is good enough for subsequent use in edge identification and matching algorithms. This allows us to continue, e.g., to juxtaposing corresponding pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, or "sewing" back together, ripped pieces of material, paper or glass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article contributes to Science and Technology Studies (STS) literatures on 'making and doing' by describing and analysing the practice of researching, reconstructing, and reimagining archival clothing patent data. It combines feminist speculation and reconstruction practices into what I term 'speculative sewing'. This involves stitching data, theory and fabric into inventions described in patents and analysing them as three-dimensional arguments. In the case here, of 1890s British women's convertible cycle wear, I examine how inventors used new forms of clothing to challenge socio-political restrictions on women's bodies in public space and help them make alternate claims to rights and entitlements. I argue that translating text and images into wearable data renders lesser-known technoscience stories visible and (more) knowable and transforms clothing (back) into material matters of public concern. Background: Management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) requires bedside assessments of symptom severity to guide therapies. Commonly used assessment tools are the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA-Ar), the modified Minnesota Detoxification Scale (mMINDS) and the Severity of Ethanol Withdrawal Scale (SEWS). Objective: To determine strength of correlation between the CIWA-Ar, mMINDS, and SEWS for bedside assessment of severe AWS and to survey nurses regarding ease of use of each tool. Methods: A single-center prospective correlation study of the three assessment tools performed by bedside nurses on patients with AWS followed by a questionnaire assessing ease of use of each tool (1 being the easiest and 9 being the hardest). Results: A total of 66 correlation assessments were performed by 49 nurses in 21 patients with AWS. Bedside CIWA-Ar, mMINDS, and SEWS were 14 ± 8.3, 13.9 ± 6.5, and 10.1 ± 4.5, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficients were 0.814 (95% CI, 0.714-0.881) between CIWA-Ar and mMINDS; 0.722 (95% CI, 0.585-0.820) between CIWA-Ar and SEWS; and 0.658 (95% CI, 0.498-0.775) between SEWS and mMINDS. Nurse ratings for ease of use were 4 ± 2.3 for CIWA-Ar, 2.9 ± 2 for mMINDS (p=0.0044 vs. CIWA-Ar), and 4.8 ± 2.1 for SEWS (p=0.036 vs. CIWA-Ar, p<0.0001 vs. mMINDS). Forty-six (69.7%) respondents preferred mMINDS versus 14 (21.2%) and 6 (9.1%) respondents favored CIWA-Ar and SEWS, respectively. Conclusion: Correlations between the three scoring tools in severe AWS are robust. Only mMINDS was considered easy to use by nurses. It was the preferred tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lascaux Polyamid-Textil-Schweisspulver 5350 is a hot-melt adhesive with promising properties for applications in textile conservation. The study presented aims at examining the properties and long-term stability of this adhesive. It also deals with the possibilities of its use for bonding proteinaceous and cellulosic textiles and describes particular methods of using the adhesive either in the form of powder or as a prepared adhesive film. The adhesion techniques are compared with conventional sewing methods commonly used to consolidate damaged textile objects. The purpose of this article is a reflection on the notions of "making family," "being family," and "being kin" in the calon perspective. To this end, I make an empirical construction about the marriages among Brazilian calon families and how their configurations direct relations of descent and affinity when producing family and relatives in thec perspective. I sew the writing of this text in subsequent moments, in which, I write about the ceasing to be a child and the rites of marriages, and a case of separation between a calon marriage with a non-gypsy; later, I analyze the possibilities of marriages; and, I finish by writing about family networks and their importance in the procedural elaboration of the calon person in making himself or herself among 'family'. Hence, the importance of thinking about how marriages inscribe themselves in the lives of children. This paper proposes a paradigm shift as a better alternative to solving the present global mental health crisis. This new model moves beyond the medical model and reframes mental health in terms of how to live well or how to enjoy a high level of existential wellbeing through overcoming suffering and meeting one's basic spiritual needs for meaning, love, and faith. This new model can also be described as the pain-brain-culture way of healing and flourishing because the processes involved in solving the problem of pain and existential suffering encompasses making full use of our brain, life experiences, and the cultural ideals of faith, hope, and love. More specifically, this Faith-Hope-Love model can be summarized as the ABC principles of achieving spiritual-existential wellbeing (SEW) through (a) awareness of our need for change, (b) belief in achieving a better future with divine providence, and (c) commitment to making daily steps of improvement in striving towards a meaningful life goal. As an addendum to Wong's (2023) proposal ("Spiritual-Existential Wellbeing (SEW): The Faith-Hope-Love Model of Mental Health & Total Wellbeing"), I offer an ultimate and proximate biological explanation of faith-hope-love, stemming from the pain-brain theory of suicide. Across human evolutionary history, people who hoped for and believed in a kind world and who put that faith into practice in kindly actions were better able to endure suffering.
