Light-trap technology is an efficient, environmentally friendly way of controlling pest insects without the problem of insecticide resistance. This paper systematically reviews the development and achievements of light trap technology in China during the past 70 years, analyzing existing problems in the research and application of this technology, and forecasts future trends in its development. BACKGROUND Electron beam ( eBeam) irradiation technology is an environmentally friendly, chemical-free alternative for disinfesting insect pests of stored grains. The underlying hypothesis is that specific doses of eBeam will have defined detrimental effects on the different life stages. We evaluated the effects of eBeam exposure in a range of doses (0.03-0.12 kGy) on the development of the cowpea bruchid ( Callosobruchus maculatus) at various stages of its life cycle. RESULTS Differential radiosensitivity was detected during egg development. Early and intermediate stages of eggs never hatched after exposure to a dose of 0.03 kGy, whereas a substantial portion of black-headed (i.e. late) eggs survived irradiation even at 0.12 kGy. However, further development of the hatched larvae was inhibited. Although midgut protein digestion remained intact, irradiated larvae (0.06 kGy or higher) failed to develop into normal living adults; rather, they died as pupae or abnormally eclosed adults, suggesting a detrimental effect of eBeam on metamorphosis. Emerged irradiated pupae had shorter longevity and were unable to produce any eggs at 0.06 kGy or higher. At this dose range, eggs laid by irradiated adults were not viable. eBeam treatment shortened adult longevity in a dose-dependent manner. Reciprocal crosses indicated that females were more sensitive to eBeam exposure than their male counterparts. Dissection of the female reproductive system revealed that eBeam treatment prevented formation of oocytes. CONCLUSION eBeam irradiation has very defined effects on cowpea bruchid development and reproduction. A dose of 0.06 kGy could successfully impede cowpea burchid population expansion. Limited data are available on boron (B)-toxicity-responsive proteins in plants. We first applied 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) to compare the effects of B-toxicity on leaf protein profiles in B-tolerant Citrus sinensis and B-intolerant Citrus grandis seedlings, and identified 27 (20) protein species with increased abundances and 23 (25) protein species with decreased abundances from the former (latter). Generally speaking, B-toxicity increased the abundances of protein species involved in antioxidation and detoxification, proteolysis, cell transport, and decreased the abundances of protein species involved in protein biosynthesis in the two citrus species. The higher B-tolerance of C. sinensis might include following several aspects: (a) protein species related to photosynthesis and energy metabolism in C. sinensis leaves were more adaptive to B-toxicity than in C. grandis ones, which was responsible for the higher photosynthesis and for the better maintenance of energy homeostasis in the former; and (b) the increased requirement for detoxification of reactive oxygen species and cytotoxic compounds due to decreased photosynthesis was less in B-toxic C. sinensis leaves than in B-toxic C. grandis ones. B-toxicity-responsive protein species involved in coenzyme biosynthesis differed between the two species, which might also contribute to the higher B-tolerance of C. sinensis . Biological significance B-toxicity occurs in many regions all over the world, especially in arid and semiarid regions due to the raising of B-rich water tables with high B accumulated in topsoil. In China, B-toxicity often occurs in some citrus orchards. However, the mechanisms of citrus B-tolerance are still not fully understood. Here, we first used 2-DE to identify some new B-toxicity-responsive-proteins involved in carbohydrate and energy metabolism, antioxidation and detoxification, signal transduction and nucleotide metabolism. Our results showed that proteins involved in photosynthesis and energy metabolism displayed more adaptive to B-toxicity in B-tolerant C. sinensis than in B-intolerant C. grandis , which might play a key role in citrus B-tolerance. Despite the extensive studies on biological function of osteocytes, there are limited studies that evaluated the structural role of osteocyte lacunae on local mechanical properties of the bone matrix. As a result, the goal of this study was to elucidate the independent contribution of osteocyte lacunae structure on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the bone matrix uncoupled from its biological effects and bone tissue composition variation. This study combined cohesive finite element modeling with experimental data from a lactation rat model to evaluate the influence of osteocyte lacunar area porosity, density, size, axis ratio, and orientation on the elastic modulus, ultimate strength, and ultimate strain of the bone matrix as well as on local crack formation and propagation. It also performed a parametric study to isolate the influence of a single osteocyte lacunae structural property on the mechanical properties of the bone matrix. The experimental measurements demonstrated statistically significant differences in lacunar size between ovariectomized rats with lactation history and virgin groups (both ovariectomized and intact) and in axis ratio between rats with lactation history and virgins. There were no differences in mechanical properties between virgin and lactation groups as determined by the finite element simulations. However, there were statistically significant linear relationships between the physiological range of osteocyte lacunar area porosity, density, size, and orientation and the elastic modulus and ultimate strength of the bone matrix in virgin and lactation rats. The parametric study also revealed similar but stronger relationships between elastic modulus and ultimate strength and lacunar density, size, and orientation. The simulations also demonstrated that the osteocyte lacunae guided the crack propagation through local stress concentrations. In summary, this study enhanced the limited knowledge on the structural role of osteocyte lacunae on local mechanical properties of the bone matrix. Nanosized photocatalyst ZnS particles supported on silica and polyvinyl alcohol was successfully prepared by complex transformation method. The photocatalytic reduction of CQ2, was carried out in the presence of nanosized ZnS catalyst irradiated by a high-pressure mercury-vapor lamp to give the main products of formaldehyde and ethanol. The catalytic ability of ZnS characterized by the uptaken rate of CQ2, volume in the reaction system depended upon the preparing conditions of nanosized ZnS catalysts. Decreasing the concentration of Na2S and increasing the molar ratio of oxygen in the PVA to Zn2+ could result in the decreasing of the size of ZnS particles but could not result in the monotonous increasing of the reduction rate of CO2. The mechanism of reduction of CO2 may be related to the H atoms and OH radicals, which form from H2O by transmission of the electron-hole pairs from irradiated the nanosized ZnS. Huanglongbing (HLB), a devastating citrus disease caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, is efficiently vectored by the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae). Tamarixia radiata (Waterston) plays a crucial role as an ectoparasitoid, preying on D. citri nymphs. By collecting and identifying headspace volatiles from fifth instar nymphs of D. citri using a gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer (GC–MS), we obtained a collection of 9 volatile compounds. These compounds were subsequently chosen to investigate the electrophysiological and behavioral responses of female T. radiata. At a concentration of 10 μg/μl, 9 compounds were compared with cis- 3-hexen-1-ol (control), resulting in trans- 2-nonenal inducing the highest relative electroantennogram (EAG) value, followed by hexanal, heptanal, n- heptadecane, tetradecanal, n- tetradecane, n- pentadecane, 1-tetradecanol, and 1-dodecanol. The top 5 EAG responses of female T. radiata to these compounds were further investigated through EAG dose–response experiments. The results showed positive dose–responses as concentrations increased from 0.01 to 10 μg/μl. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, female T. radiata exhibited a preference for specific compounds. They were significantly attracted to tetradecanal at a concentration of 10 µg/µl and trans- 2-nonenal at 0.01 µg/µl, while no significant attraction was observed toward hexanal, heptanal, or n- heptadecane. Our report is the first to demonstrate that volatiles produced by D. citri nymphs attract T. radiata , which suggests that this parasitoid may utilize nymph volatiles to locate its host.
