Xhoreus gen. n. Figs 19–21 Type species: Xhoreus ulosentus sp. n., by present designation. Diagnosis. 1. Small leafhopper; male and female: length from apex of crown to apex of tegmina 2.6–2.9 mm; crown length medially 0.5–0.6 mm; crown angle 89–91°. 2. Dorsum of head in male and female with brown to dark brown color pattern with apex of crown with deltate, paired, proximate marking and disc with variable, hourglass-shaped or amorphous marking, small ovoid paired making near base of head (Fig. 19A, B, D–F). Terminalia in male: 3. Valve semicircular (Fig. 20C), length/width=0.4. 4. Pygofer incised dorsally to half its length; pygofer lobe in lateral view, rectangular, with apex with dorsal and ventral margins rounded, edentate; dorsomedially with 3–5 long, scattered macrosetae (length 12–17 µm) and up to 20 short macrosetae, laterobasally of suture (length 6–9µm) (Fig. 20B). 5. Named for Chief Xhore (pronounced Coree, alternatively with alveolar lateral click) of the Goringhaiqua people of the south western part of South Africa, for documented interactions with British and Dutch sailors between 1600 and 1630 and now a lost name, culture and language. Gender masculine. Description. Male, female and nymph. Color. Ground color ochraceous to stramineous, with light to dark brown markings. Nymph ochraceous to darker brown, wing pad margin yellow, darker specimens with brown, deltate paired marking. Head. Apex of crown with paired, elongated triangular marking; disc with brown to light brown hourglassshaped marking, variably constricted medially; small circular to amorphous marks mediad of ocelli; medially near compound eyes with single, paired, amorphous brown marking (Fig. 19A, B, D–F). Face. Ochraceous, with light brown horizontal arcs on clypeus (Fig. 19I). Pronotum. 1–3 pairs of fused or separate brown marks (Fig. 19A, B, D–F). Tegmina. Cells opaque, whitish, brown marking in inner and outer discal cells, veins light brown, reticulation in claval cells (Fig. 19A–C, D–F). Hind wing. Smokey, opaque, veins brown. Morphology. Head. Wider than pronotum. Face. Clypellus slightly longer than wide, parallel-sided, posterior margin shallowly rounded, anterior margin strongly rounded extended beyond posterior margin of gena. Length/width=2.1–2.2; appendix absent, four apical cells, anteapical cells reduced, with central cell and inner cell fused with inner discal cell (Figs 20L, male, 21P, female). Hind wing. Reduced, about half as wide as width of tegmina, about 4/5 as long as tegmina (Figs 20M, male, 21Q, female). Costal margin sublinear; narrow, elongate, opaque; about one third shorter and narrower respectively than tegmina length and width; length/width=2.9–3.1. Tegmina-hind wing relation. Incised halfway into pygofer, narrow relative to greatest width of pygofer in dorsal view (width segment 10/greatest width of pygofer at point of greatest width of segment 10=0.30–0.33) (Fig. 20A). Pygofer. Rectangular in lateral view; basolateral suture sublinear, angled about 45° or curvate, extended less than half-way into pygofer; anterior margin medially with elongated apodeme; 3–5 long (12–17 µm) and up to 20 short (4–8 µm) macrosetae near dorsal distal half of pygofer lobe; group of 10–25 macrosetae ventrodistally of basolateral suture, 6–9 µm in length (Fig. 20A, B). Pygofer lobe. Pygofer lobe defined by point distad of incision of segment 10; edentate, slightly narrower than basal width of pygofer, posterior margin near-rectangular, with rounded distal dorsal and distal ventral corners (Fig. 20B). Subgenital plate. Medial margin straight, lateral margins widely, uniformly to irregularly, shallowly convex; apex acute; 1–2 submarginal rows of macrosetae, longest macrosetae about half as long as medial width of subgenital plate or shorter. Valve. Semi-ovate (Fig. 20C). Style. Apophysis elongate, in dorsal view depressed, acutely triangular, denticulate ventrally, base wider than width at preapical lobe, preapical lobe ventral; anterior medial lobe curved dorsad (Fig. 20D, E); style apex near apex of subgenital plate (Fig. 20C). Connective. Y-shaped with narrow stem and arms, of similar proportions, arms widely separated, articulated with base of preatrium (Fig. 20K). Aedeagus. Complex structure (Fig. 20F), with short curvate shaft, elongated atrium and preatrium, reduced dorsal apodeme, base of preatrium produced into single, slightly asymmetric process (Fig. 20F, I). Shaft with paired, apical, anterior process and paired, medioposterior process (Fig. 20G, H, J). Female. Sternite 7. Transversely rectangular, posterior margin with V-shaped notch, about one third as wide as width across posterior margin, margin of notch sclerotized (Figs 19G, H, 21A, B). Valvula 1. Lanceolate (Fig. 21H). Valvula 2. Lanceolate, basally slightly narrower than distally (Fig. 21I), serration of dorsal margin apically and medially with short teeth in trough between slightly raised, rounded teeth (Fig. 21N, O, apex and midsection respectively). Valvula 3. Up to 15 long and short setae (Fig. 21J, K). Valvifer 1. Longer than wide (Fig. 21D); in dorsal view fused medially (Fig. 21C). Valvifer 2. Elongate (Fig. 21E), sculpture with 5–10 pore-like structures near distal margin (Fig. 21F, G). Remarks. The combination of internal and external features separates this genus from any known genus of leafhoppers. However, there is near identical color pattern of the head of Xhoreus (Fig. 19) and that of Colistra (Figs 1, 2, 3) and the paired, deltate marks occur in other genera but with different size and orientation, i.e., Kimbella (Fig. 4A, B), Bonaspeia (Fig. 5A–C), Curvostylus (Fig. 4E–H), unnamed species (Figs 4C, 5D, 6A, B) and Retevolatus Stiller (2021). Features of internal male genitalia are not known to correspond to any other described species in the Fynbos Biome, in particular the aedeagus with a single, preatrial process. At present this single process is not interpreted as a fusion of paired processes. A single preatrial process is observed in specimens of an undescribed species from Cradock (Fig. 5F, G) and East London, Eastern Cape province (personal observation) but these share no other corresponding features with Xhoreus. Specimens of an undescribed species from Gansbaai (-34.58 19.35) (Fig. 5D, E), a coastal locality about 100km SE of Scarborough and the Cape Point peninsula, have a similar aedeagus in lateral profile, i.e., short tubular edentate shaft, elongated preatrium but paired, elongated, preatrial processes. Externally this leafhopper and Caffrolix johani Davies, 1988 (Fig. 6D, E) have different markings of the head, but similar dimensions to that of Colistra and Caffrolix sp. (Fig. 6C). Examples of leafhoppers with paired preatrial, atrial or shaft-associated processes on the aedeagus are Discolopeus Stiller, Gcaleka Naudé and Renosteria Theron. The Peruvian Peppertree (Schinus molle L.) is an evergreen tree native to semiarid environments of Peru and Bolivia in South America. This tree has been introduced and widely planted for ornamental and forestry purposes in several semiarid regions of the world because its seedlings are easily established and have a high survival rate; it also grows quickly, and it is tolerant of dry climates. We compared the global and regional niches of naturalized and planted populations of S. molle in order to examine the invasive stages and potential distribution of this species in four regions of the world. This work provides a novel approach for understanding the invasion dynamics of S. molle in these areas and elucidates the ecological processes that bring about such invasions. Most naturalized and planted populations were found to be in equilibrium with the environment. In its native range as well as in Australia and South Africa the models of the coverage area of habitat suitability for natural populations were the highest, whereas the coverage area of planted populations was lower. For planted populations in Australia and South Africa, a large percentage of predicted presences fell within sink populations. The invasion stages of S. molle vary across regions in its adventive range; this result may be attributable to residence time as well as climatic and anthropic factors that have contributed to the spread of populations.

The Sapindales comprise one of the hallmark orders in the Neotropics, being an important component of forested and open formations, especially in Brazil. In recent decades, there have been many efforts made to unravel the Brazilian flora and its distribution; among them is the Brazilian Flora 2020 Project, the main goal of which was to produce updated monographs about Brazilian plant groups. In this work, we present a synthesis of the occurrence and distributions of species and genera of Sapindales in Brazil, noting species endemic to the country, as well as the prevalence of the order in Brazilian phytogeographic domains and vegetations. We have shown that Brazil has 1003 native species in 119 genera of six families of Sapindales, with 388 (43%) species endemic to the country, and the Rutaceae and Sapindaceae families being the richest in species, genera and endemics. Diverse species and life forms are found in virtually all vegetations and phytogeographic domains, but mostly in rainforests of the Amazonian and Atlantic Forest domains. Life forms vary greatly across different families, with a prevalence of lianas in Sapindaceae and of trees in Rutaceae. We discuss our results in light of the current patterns of the families and their assemblage in different vegetation and pytogeographic domains of Brazil.

Sapindales consists of six larger families (Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, and Simaroubaceae), and three smaller ones (Biebersteiniaceae, Kirkiaceae, and Nitrariaceae). It is monophyletic, but there are controversies in inter- and intra-family relations and no consensus regarding the basic chromosome number of the order and its families. We aim to detect the level of knowledge about chromosome numbers and discuss the evolution in Sapindales. We searched the literature for the available chromosome numbers, accounting for data for 214 genera and 805 species, corresponding to only about 46% of the genera and 15% of the species. Globally, among the six largest families, we observed the highest percentages of species with chromosome counts in Rutaceae (18%) and Sapindaceae (15.5%), contrasting with Burseraceae (3.5%). Chromosome numbers ranged from 2n = 10 in Biebersteiniaceae species to 2n = 360 in Trichilia dregeana Sond. (Meliaceae). We found a great diversity of chromosome numbers in each family, especially in Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, and Meliaceae. A low percentage of species of Sapindales of the Brazilian flora have their chromosome numbers known, mainly in Burseraceae (2.6%) and Meliaceae (14.9%). We confirm the importance of numerical chromosome changes in the diversification of families and genera. Polyploidy was very important in the origin of large families and later in their diversification, especially in Meliaceae and Rutaceae. Dysploidy is very frequent in the diversification of the large families. We discussed the basic chromosome numbers (x) for Sapindales and its families, based on the literature. Inconclusive results on x occur in Meliaceae and Simaroubaceae.

Burseroxylon sp. (Fig. 19 A-J) MATERIAL. — MNHN.F.50196 (field number: 17FN05), MNHN.F.50197 (field number: 17FN11), MNHN.F.50198 (field number: NAT17-01). Estimated minimal diameter:> 30 cm, as rays are almost parallel. LOCALITY. — Kalewa Township, Sagaing Region, Myanmar. AGE. — Upper lower to lowermost middle Miocene. DESCRIPTION Wood diffuse-porous. Growth rings indistinct or absent. Vessels mostly solitary (75%) or in radial groups of 1-4 (25%) (Fig. 19A), oval to round, 2-13 per mm² (average: 7); tangential diameter 90-280 µm (average: 190 µm). Tyloses present in most vessels (Fig. 19A, D), budding from ray parenchyma cells. Vessel elements 130-540 µm long (average: 310 µm). Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate, polygonal shaped, 7-10 µm wide (average 8.5 µm). Vesselray pits apparently simple with different shapes and sizes, mostly horizontal (5-20 µm, 13 µm in average) (Fig. 19E). Parenchyma exclusively paratracheal, scanty and vasicentric forming a 1-cell sheath around vessels (Fig. 19A, D); parenchyma cells 45-90 µm long (average: 60 µm), 25-45 µm wide (average: 35 µm) in tangential section; some crystals are present in chambered parenchyma cells in the specimen MNHN.F.50197 Rays 1- to 4-seriate, mostly 3- or 2-seriate, always more than 50% of the rays are 3-seriate, rarely uniseriate, (Fig. 19B), non-storied, 3-12 rays per mm (average: 7), 150-640 µm (average: 380 µm) or 4-23 cells high, heterocellular made of procumbent cells with 1(-3) square or upright cells at both ends (Fig. 19C, F, G); crystals sometimes present in upright or enlarged marginal cells (Fig. 19F), maybe in procumbent cells as well (Fig. 19G). Fibres thin-to-thick to thin-walled (lumina 2.5 times the double wall thickness in average), almost all fibres are septate (Fig. 19B), tangential diameter 10-30 µm (average: 18 µm). Traumatic canals present (specimens MNHN.F.50197 and MNHN.F.50198) as holes of different size and shape surrounded by clusters of undifferentiated cells full of black content (Fig. 19 H-J). The specimen MNHN.F.50198 displays an enlarged radial line of undifferentiated tissue embedding some rays that recalls a healed crack filled with tissue during the growth of the wood (Fig. 19J) that ends with a line of traumatic canals (Fig. 19I). Radial canals absent. DISCUSSION These specimens are characterized by: 1) diffuse-porous wood with isolated and tylosed vessels; 2) exclusively simple perforation plates; 3) septate fibres which although are not always very well preserved are clearly present throughout the whole sample; 4) exclusively vasicentric parenchyma; 5) growth rings indistinct or absent; and (6) 2- to 4-seriate heterocellular rays. These features suggest affinities with Burseraceae as well as some Anacardiaceae (Metcalfe & Chalk 1950; InsideWood 2004 -onward; Ogata et al. 2008). Both families share several similar anatomical features. However, the presence of septate fibres is more consistent in Burseraceae, as well as a greater homogeneity in rays and parenchyma patterns, and the presence of crystals in enlarged ray cells. Moreover, traumatic canals are not reported in Anacardiacae, whereas they are reported in Burseraceae (Metcalfe & Chalk 1950). One species of Anacardiaceae resembles our specimens: Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr., which has similar vessel, ray and parenchyma patterns, crystals in normal and enlarged marginal cells, in parenchyma and in procumbent cells; however, silica bodies are present in its ray cells and it is always described with radial canals (InsideWood 2004 -onward; Gupta & Agarwal 2008), which are absent in our fossils. The three present specimens show slight differences in vessel and ray density, ray height and width, and crystal presence (the specimens MNHN.F.50197 has slightly shorter rays, more frequent 2-seriate rays, crystals in non-enlarged marginal cells, in parenchyma cells and possibly in procumbent ray cells) but the range of these variations is within the inter- and intraspecific diversity of Burseraceae (Metcalfe & Chalk 1950; InsideWood 2004 -onward; Ogata et al. 2008). The wood anatomy of Burseraceae is very homogenous, both among extant and fossil species (Awasthi & Srivastava 1989; Prasad 1993; Ogata et al. 2008). Among Burseraceae, our fossils resemble the genera Canarium L. and Protium Burm. f. which display homogeneous 1-3-(up to 4-)seriate rays and sometimes traumatic canals (Metcalfe & Chalk 1950). The examination of Burseraceae from the Xylarium of the MNHN highlighted a resemblance between the fossil specimens MNHN.F.50196 and MNHN.F.50198 with Canarium bengalense Roxb. (specimen MNHN-P-P00395579), because of crystals only present in enlarged marginal ray cells, similar vessel size and frequency (sometimes et al. (2008) mention that the genus Canarium can have rays up to 4-seriate. The fossil specimen MNHN.F.50197 is closer to Protium serratum (Wall. ex Colebr.) Engl. (specimens MNHN-P- P00396706 and MNHN-P-P00396663) as it displays crystals in normal marginal cells as well as sometimes in procumbent cells and in parenchyma cells, smaller and more frequent rays than Canarium (sometimes> 10/mm 2 and under 100 µm of diameter). Protium serratum is described with and without radial canals (InsideWood 2004 -onward). Burseraceae are not numerous in the fossil record (Gregory et al. 2009) and include two dominant fossil genera: 1) Burseroxylon which includes fossils related to Bursera Jacq. ex L. (and by extension Protium) and some Garuga Roxb. (Lakhanpal et al. 1981); and 2) Canarioxylon Prakash, Březinová & Awasthi which includes fossils related to Canarium. Some fossils are also described under the name Canarium. The diagnoses of Burseroxylon and Canarioxylon are very similar; Burseroxylon is different in having (only sometimes) visible growth rings, crystalliferous rays, vasicentric parenchyma in addition to scanty paratracheal, sometimes radial canals, and rays 5-seriate or more (instead of 1-4 seriate in Canarioxylon). The genus Garugoxylon Vozenin-Serra & Privé-Gill (1991) is not taken into consideration as the diagnosis can be included in the one of Burseroxylon (Lakhanpal et al. 1981). Only one fossil is described with crystals in parenchyma cells: Canarioxylon noduliforme Yang, Guo & Wei, 1995, but it displays radial canals and larger rays among other incompatible features. If we strictly follow the diagnoses of the genera, our fossils are attributed to Burseroxylon and not Canarioxylon, because of the presence of vasicentric parenchyma and crystals in ray cells. Awasthi & Srivastava (1989) underline that Burseraceae species share overlapping descriptions and diagnoses; because of this overlap, we do not attribute our specimens to any Burseroxylon species and attribute our fossils to Burseroxylon sp. while awaiting a taxonomic clarification of the genus and the family. Protium is a genus of trees growing in America, Madagascar and Asia in evergreen to semi-deciduous forests up to 800 m altitude (Sosef et al. 1998). Protium serratum lives in humid areas of India and tropical forests of Myanmar (Prasad 1993), and in moist evergreen and deciduous forests of Thailand (Tropical Plants Database 2014 -onward), in riparian areas (Gamble 1902). Up to 600-1000 m altitude (Wu et al. 2008). Canarium species live in Africa, Asia and Australia in wet evergreen rainforests, mainly in lowlands, but also in monsoonal climate and open forests (Lemmens et al. 1995). The late Early Pleistocene was the last time of equable climate in northern Central Italy, reflected in its large mammal fauna and numerous palynological records. Reliably dated leaf fossils from this time are rare, but provide crucial information on local and regional vegetation, biogeographic relationships, and species turnover coinciding with the assembly of modern forest biomes. Here we investigated a rich assemblage of leaf and fruit impressions (63 fossil-taxa) from the Oriolo quarry, Faenza (Ravenna), dated to the latest Calabrian, preserved in transgressive coastal deposits. The fossil assemblage represents riparian vegetation and xeric alluvial habitats in the lowlands and forest vegetation above the alluvial plain. Forest-building trees were deciduous, but comprised several taxa characteristic of open scrubland or forest edges. The composition of the flora reflects a dynamic process of assembling modern forest biomes in western Eurasia. While most taxa correspond to modern submediterranean and temperate woody species, some others represent late occurrences of taxa today confined to refugia outside Italy (Parrotia, Gleditsia, Pterocarya), and a few are Miocene/Pliocene relics indicating final floristic links with East Asia (Japan) and/or North America (Tsuga cf. chiarugii, Carya cf. minor) and Pleistocene endemism in Italy (Berberis auriolensis, Acer aemilianum).

Cuticular waxes play an important role in plant survival in terrestrial environments. They are part of the cuticle and form a hydrophobic barrier associated with a decline in water loss through cuticular transpiration. Data on the chemical and morphological composition of cuticular waxes in Sapindales have been collected for more than 5th years. The present review compiles the data published for the species of this order between 1970 and February of 2021 on the Google Scholar and Web of Science databases. From the 55 papers, more than a third (36.4%) are related to chemical composition analysis and morphological description of epicuticular waxes on leaves and fruits. However, other aspects studied include wax variation during development (27.3%) and the interactions between the cuticle, microorganisms and pathogens (5.5%). Alkanes, free fatty acids, primary alcohols, ketones and triterpenes are the main classes of wax components, with homologue distribution similar to that described for other angiosperm. Amorphous epicuticular waxes were predominant on the leaves and fruits, mainly the smooth layer type. On stems, crystalloid platelet and rodlet morphologies were the most common. The presence of uncommon compounds in some species reinforces the considerable unexplored potential of this group of plants.

In Brazil, Sapindales is represented by six families Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, and Simaroubaceae. Palynological studies on its members are varied, including few detailed descriptions as well as palynotaxonomic analyses or brief diagnoses in floras or ecological, paleopalynological, or melissopalynological investigations. This study aimed to compile the main pollen characters of Sapindales families occurring in Brazil through a thorough review of the literature including national or foreign taxa and to present new information on the palynology of representatives of the families. Acetolyzed pollen grains from representatives of the six families were also analyzed, measured, and illustrated under light microscope. Unacetolyzed pollen grains were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. An evolutionary approach to pollen morphology in Sapindales was carried out by mapping and reconstructing the ancestral states of the pollen grains attributes on the existing phylogenetic proposal. Phylogenetic trees were generated by parsimony analysis and used to reconstruct the evolutionary history of each character state of the analyzed taxa. This study represents a first attempt to establish the phylogeny of the order Sapindales using pollen data. Future palynological studies should focus on species not included in the current phylogenetic tree as well as phylogenetic relationships within the nine Sapindales families.
