Low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars are strong and variable X-ray emitters, as has been well established by EINSTEIN and ROSAT observatories. It was originally believed that this emission was of thermal nature and primarily originated from coronal activity (magnetically confined loops, in analogy with Solar activity) on contracting young stars. Broadband spectral analysis showed that the emission was not isothermal and that elemental abundances were non-Solar. The resolving power of the Chandra and XMM X-ray gratings spectrometers have provided the first, tantalizing details concerning the physical conditions such as temperatures, densities, and abundances that characterize the X-ray emitting regions of young star. These existing high resolution spectrometers, however, simply do not have the effective area to measure diagnostic lines for a large number of PMS stars over required to answer global questions such as: how does magnetic activity in PMS stars differ from that of main sequence stars, how do they evolve, what determines the population structure and activity in stellar clusters, and how does the activity influence the evolution of protostellar disks. Highly resolved (R>3000) X-ray spectroscopy at orders of magnitude greater efficiency than currently available will provide major advances in answering these questions. This requires the ability to resolve the key diagnostic emission lines with a precision of better than 100 km/s.

We present observations of SS 433 using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. Many emission lines of highly ionized elements are detected with relativistic blue and red Doppler shifts. The lines are measurably broadened to 1700 km s[superscript -1] (FWHM), and the widths do not depend significantly on the characteristic emission temperature, suggesting that the emission occurs in a freely expanding region of constant collimation with an opening angle of 1[° over .]23 ± 0[° over .]06. The blueshifts of lines from low-temperature gas are the same as those of high-temperature gas within the uncertainties, again indicating that the hottest gas we observe to emit emission lines is already at terminal velocity. This velocity is 0.2699 ± 0.0007c, which is larger than the velocity inferred from optical emission lines by 2920 ± 440 km s[superscript -1]. Fits to the emission-line fluxes give a range of temperatures in the jet from 5 × 10[superscript 6] to 1 × 10[superscript 8] K. We derive the emission measure as a function of temperature for a four-component model that fits the line flux data. Using the density-sensitive Si XIII triplet, the characteristic electron density is 10[superscript 14] cm[superscript -3], where the gas temperature is about 1.3 × 10[superscript 7] K. Based on an adiabatic expansion model of the jet and a distance of 4.85 kpc, the electron densities drop from ~2 × 10[superscript 15] to 4 × 10[superscript 13] cm[superscript -3] at distances of (2-20) × 10[superscript 10] cm from the apex of the cone that bounds the flow. The radius of the base of the visible jet is estimated to be ~10[superscript 8] cm, and the mass outflow rate is 1.5 × 10[superscript -7] M[subscript ☉] yr[superscript -1]. The kinetic power is 3.2 × 1038 ergs s[superscript -1], which is 1000 times larger than the unabsorbed 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity. The bremsstrahlung emission associated with the lines can account for the entire continuum; we see no direct eviden, United States. We present a first analysis of a high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the ionized stellar wind of Vela X-1 during eclipse. The data were obtained with the High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The spectrum is resolved into emission lines with fluxes between 0.02 and 1.04 × 10[superscript -4] photons cm[superscript -2] s[superscript -1]. We identify lines from a variety of charge states, including fluorescent lines from cold material and a warm photoionized wind. We can exclude signatures from collisionally ionized plasmas. For the first time, we identify fluorescent lines from L-shell ions from lower Z elements. We also detect radiative recombination continua from a kT = 10 eV (1.2 × 10[superscript 5] K) photoionized optically thin gas. We have obtained high-resolution X-ray spectra of the coronally active binary II Pegasi (HD 224085), covering the wavelength range of 1.5-25 Å. For the first half of our 44 ks observation, the source was in a quiescent state with constant X-ray flux, after which it flared, reaching twice the quiescent flux in 12 ks, then decreased. We analyze the emission-line spectrum and continuum during quiescent and flaring states. The differential emission measure derived from lines fluxes shows a hot corona with a continuous distribution in temperature. During the nonflare state, the distribution peaks near log T = 7.2, and when flaring, it peaks near 7.6. High-temperature lines are enhanced slightly during the flare, but most of the change occurs in the continuum. Coronal abundance anomalies are apparent, with iron very deficient relative to oxygen and significantly weaker than expected from photospheric measurements, while neon is enhanced relative to oxygen. We find no evidence of appreciable resonant scattering optical depth in line ratios of iron and oxygen. The flare light curve is consistent with solar two-ribbon flare models but with a very long reconnection time constant of about 65 ks. We infer loop lengths of about 0.05 to about 0.25 stellar radii in the flare, if the flare emission originated from a single, low-density loop., United States. We observed the ultra-compact binary candidate 4U 0614+091 for a total of 200 ks with the high-energy transmission gratings on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The source is found at various intensity levels with spectral variations present. X-ray luminosities vary between 2.0 × 10[superscript 36] erg s–1 and 3.5 × 10[superscript 36] erg s[superscript –1]. Continuum variations are present at all times and spectra can be fit well with a power-law component, a high kT blackbody component, and a broad line component near oxygen. The spectra require adjustments to the Ne K edge and in some occasions also to the Mg K edge. Once further resolved, the Ne K edge region appears variable in terms of optical depths and morphology. The edge vicinity reveals an average velocity smear of ~3500 km s[superscript –1] implying a characteristic radius of the order of <10[superscript 9] cm consistent with an ultra-compact binary nature. The variability proves that the excess is intrinsic to the source. The data seem to indicate excess column densities of up to several 10[superscript 18] cm[superscript –2]. However, there are some serious problems with an Ne I interpretation in ultra-compact disks and we need to consider alternative interpretations, which include a variable O VIII ionization edge, as likely candidates. We test such possibilities with existing observations. The prominent soft emission line complex near the O VIII Lyα position appears extremely broad and relativistic effects from near the innermost disk have to be included. Gravitationally broadened line fits also provide nearly edge-on angles of inclination consistent with the observed high dynamics near the Ne K edge. The emissions appear consistent with an ionized disk with ionization parameters of the order of 10[superscript 4] at radii of a few 10[superscript 7] cm. The line wavelengths with respect to O VIII Lyα are found variably blueshifted indicating more complex inner disk dynamics.

We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple (hierarchical quadruple) weak-lined T Tauri star system HD 98800, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph (HETGS) on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. In the zeroth-order Chandra/HETGS X-ray image, both principle binary components of HD 98800 (A and B, separation 0.["]8) are detected; component A was observed to flare during the observation. The infrared excess (dust disk) component, HD 98800B, is a factor of ~4 fainter in X-rays than the apparently "diskless" HD 98800A in quiescence. The line ratios of He-like species (e.g., Ne IX and O VII) in the HD 98800A spectrum indicate that the X-ray-emitting plasma around HD 98800 is in a typical coronal density regime (log n [less than or equal to] 11). We conclude that the dominant X-ray-emitting component(s) of HD 98800 is (are) coronally active. We present initial results from a new 440-ks Chandra HETG GTO observation of the canonical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The proximity of NGC 1068, together with Chandra’s superb spatial and spectral resolution, allow an unprecedented view of its nucleus and circumnuclear NLR. We perform the first spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the ‘ionization cone’ in any AGN, and use the sensitive line diagnostics offered by the HETG to measure the ionization state, density, and temperature at discrete points along the ionized NLR. We argue that the NLR takes the form of outflowing photoionized gas, rather than gas that has been collisionally ionized by the small-scale radio jet in NGC 1068. We investigate evidence for any velocity gradients in the outflow, and describe our next steps in modeling the spatially resolved spectra as a function of distance from the nucleus.

Details of the design, fabrication, and ground and flight calibration of the High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) on the Chandra X‐Ray Observatory are presented after 5 years of flight experience. Specifics include the theory of phased transmission gratings as applied to the HETG, the Rowland design of the spectrometer, details of the grating fabrication techniques, and the results of ground testing and calibration of the HETG. We test the physical model of the relativistic jets in the Galactic X-ray binary SS 433 proposed in our previous paper using additional observations from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. These observations sample two new orbital/precessional phase combinations. In the observation near orbital phase zero, the H- and He-like Fe lines from both receding and approaching jets are comparably strong and unocculted while the He-like Si line of the receding jet is significantly weaker than that of the approaching jet. This condition may imply that the cooler parts of the receding jet are eclipsed by the companion. The X-ray spectrum from this observation has broader emission lines than obtained in Paper I that may arise from the divergence of a conical outflow or from Doppler shift variations during the observation. Using recent optical results, along with the length of the unobscured portion of the receding jet assuming adiabatic cooling, we calculate the radius of the companion to be 9.6 ± 1.0 R[subscript ☉], about one-third of the Roche lobe radius. For a main-sequence star, this corresponds to a companion mass of 35 ± 7 M[subscript ☉], giving a primary source mass of 20 ± 5 M[subscript ☉]. If our model is correct, this calculation indicates that the compact object is a black hole, and accretion occurs through a wind process. 4U 1822–371 is one of the prototype accretion disk coronal sources with an orbital period of about 5.6 hr. The binary is viewed almost edge-on at a high inclination angle of 83°, which makes it a unique candidate to study binary orbital and accretion disk dynamics in high powered X-ray sources. We observed the X-ray source in 4U 1822–371 with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer for almost nine binary orbits. X-ray eclipse times provide an update of the orbital ephemeris. We find that our result follows the quadratic function implied by previous observations; however, it suggests a flatter trend. From the orbital line dynamics, we confirm the previous suggestion that recombination emission is located at the impact bulge of the accretion stream. Our observations show that the recombining plasma is confined to this region, and prove that it has to be a very thin layer on top of the accretion disk. Fe XXVI emission is detected at all phases and likely originates from the hot central corona which has optical depth <<1. The implied ionization parameters from both regions strongly suggest that the illuminating source is obscured with respect to the observer and is orders of magnitude brighter than what is actually observed. This is independently confirmed by the best fit of a flat power law with a high-energy cutoff and partial covering absorption with a covering fraction of about 50%. High-resolution spectroscopy at energies below 1 keV covers the lines of C, N, O, Ne and Fe ions, and is central to studies of the Interstellar Medium, the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium, warm absorption and outflows in Active Galactic Nuclei, coronal emission from stars, etc. The large collecting area, long focal length, and 5 arcsecond half power diameter telescope point-spread function of the International X-ray Observatory will present unprecedented opportunity for a grating spectrometer to address these areas at the forefront of astronomy and astrophysics. We present the current status of a transmission grating spectrometer based on recently developed high-efficiency critical-angle transmission (CAT) gratings that combine the traditional advantages of blazed reflection and transmission gratings. The optical design places light-weight grating arrays close to the telescope mirrors, which maximizes dispersion distance and thus spectral resolution and minimizes demands on mirror performance. It merges features from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer and the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer, and provides resolving power R = E/ΔE = 3000 - 5000 (full width half max) and effective area >1000 cm[superscript 2] in the soft x-ray band. We discuss recent results on ray-tracing and optimization of the optical design, instrument configuration studies, and grating fabrication., United States. We developed an instrument design capable of measuring linear X-ray polarization over a broad-band using conventional spectroscopic optics, using a method previously described by Marshall (2008) involving laterally graded, multilayer-coated flat mirrors. We present possible science investigations with such an instrument and two possible configurations. This instrument could be used in a small orbiting mission or scaled up for the International X-ray Observatory. We present a high-resolution soft x-ray grating spectrometer concept for the International X-Ray Observatory (IXO) that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements for effective area (> 1, 000 cm[superscript 2] for E < 1 keV) and spectral resolution (E/[open triangle]E > 3, 000). At the heart of the spectrometer is an array of recently developed highefficiency blazed transmission gratings, the so-called critical-angle transmission (CAT) gratings. They combine the advantages of traditional transmission gratings (very low mass, extremely relaxed alignment and flatness tolerances) with those of x-ray reflection gratings (high efficiency due to blazing in the direction of grazing-incidence reflection). In addition, a CAT grating spectrometer is well-suited for co-existence with energy-dispersive highenergy focal plane detectors, since most high-energy x rays are neither absorbed, nor diffracted, and contribute to the effective area at the telescope focus. Since our initial successful x-ray demonstrations of the CAT grating concept with large-period and lower aspect-ratio prototypes, we have now microfabricated 200 nm-period silicon CAT gratings comprised of grating bars with the required dimensions (6 micron tall, 40 nm wide, aspect ratio 150), optimized for the 0.3 to 1.0 keV energy band. High-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool for probing chemical and physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) at various phases. We present detections of K transition absorption lines from the low-ionization ions of O I, O II, Ne I, Ne II, and Ne III, and the high-ionization ones of O VI, O VII, O VIII, Ne IX, and Mg XI, as well as details of neutral absorption edges from Mg, Ne, and O in an unprecedented high-quality spectrum of the low-mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2. These absorption features trace the intervening ISM which is indicated by the unshifted line centroids with respect to the rest-frame wavelengths of the corresponding atomic transitions. We have measured the column densities of each ion. We complement these measurements with the radio H I and optical Hα observations toward the same sight line and estimate the mean abundances of Ne, O, and Mg in the cool phase to Ne/H = 0.84(+0.13) –0.10 × 10(–4), O/H = 3.83(+0.48) –0.43 × 10(–4), and Mg/H = 0.35(+0.09) –0.11 × 10(–4), and O and Mg in the hot phase to O/H = 5.81(+1.30) –1.34 × 10(–4) and Mg/H = 0.33(+0.09) –0.09 × 10(–4), respectively. These results indicate a mild depletion of oxygen into dust grains in the cool phase and little or no depletion of magnesium. We also find that absorption from highly ionized ions in the hot Galactic disk gas can account for most of the absorption observed toward the extragalactic sight lines like Mrk 421. The bulk of the observed O VI likely originates from the conductive interfaces between the cool and hot gases, from which a significant amount of N V and C IV emission is predicted., NASA, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory

The Micro-X High Resolution Microcalorimeter X-ray Imaging Rocket is sounding rocket experiment that will combine a transition-edge-sensor X-ray-microcalorimeter array with a conical imaging mirror to obtain high-spectral-resolution images of extended and point X-ray sources. Our first target is the Puppis A supernova remnant, which will be observed in January 2011. The Micro-X observation of the bright eastern knot of Puppis A will obtain a line-dominated spectrum with up to 90,000 counts collected in 300 seconds at 2 eV resolution across the 0.3-2.5 keV band. Micro-X will utilize plasma diagnostics to determine the thermodynamic and ionization state of the plasma, to search for line shifts and broadening associated with dynamical processes, and seek evidence of ejecta enhancement. We describe the progress made in developing this payload, including the detector, cryogenics, and electronics assemblies. A detailed modeling effort has been undertaken to design a rocket-bourne adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator with sufficient magnetic shielding to allow stable operation of transition edge sensors, and the associated rocket electronics have been prototyped and tested.

We present detections of K transition absorption lines from the low-ionization ions of O I, O II, Ne I, Ne II, and Ne III, and the high-ionization ones of O VI, O VII, O VIII, Ne IX, and Mg XI, as well as details of neutral absorption edges from Mg, Ne, and O in an unprecedented high-quality spectrum of the low-mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2. These absorption features trace the intervening ISM which is indicated by the unshifted line centroids with respect to the rest-frame wavelengths of the corresponding atomic transitions. We have measured the column densities of each ion. We complement these measurements with the radio H I and optical Hα observations toward the same sight line and estimate the mean abundances of Ne, O, and Mg in the cool phase to Ne/H = 0.84(+0.13) –0.10 × 10(–4), O/H = 3.83(+0.48) –0.43 × 10(–4), and Mg/H = 0.35(+0.09) –0.11 × 10(–4), and O and Mg in the hot phase to O/H = 5.81(+1.30) –1.34 × 10(–4) and Mg/H = 0.33(+0.09) –0.09 × 10(–4), respectively. These results indicate a mild depletion of oxygen into dust grains in the cool phase and little or no depletion of magnesium. We also find that absorption from highly ionized ions in the hot Galactic disk gas can account for most of the absorption observed toward the extragalactic sight lines like Mrk 421. The bulk of the observed O VI likely originates from the conductive interfaces between the cool and hot gases, from which a significant amount of N V and C IV emission is predicted., NASA, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory

The Micro-X High Resolution Microcalorimeter X-ray Imaging Rocket is sounding rocket experiment that will combine a transition-edge-sensor X-ray-microcalorimeter array with a conical imaging mirror to obtain high-spectral-resolution images of extended and point X-ray sources. Our first target is the Puppis A supernova remnant, which will be observed in January 2011. The Micro-X observation of the bright eastern knot of Puppis A will obtain a line-dominated spectrum with up to 90,000 counts collected in 300 seconds at 2 eV resolution across the 0.3-2.5 keV band. Micro-X will utilize plasma diagnostics to determine the thermodynamic and ionization state of the plasma, to search for line shifts and broadening associated with dynamical processes, and seek evidence of ejecta enhancement. We describe the progress made in developing this payload, including the detector, cryogenics, and electronics assemblies. A detailed modeling effort has been undertaken to design a rocket-bourne adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator with sufficient magnetic shielding to allow stable operation of transition edge sensors, and the associated rocket electronics have been prototyped and tested.

We present a high-resolution soft x-ray grating spectrometer concept for the International X-Ray Observatory (IXO) that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements for effective area (> 1, 000 cm[superscript 2] for E < 1 keV) and spectral resolution (E/[open triangle]E > 3, 000). At the heart of the spectrometer is an array of recently developed highefficiency blazed transmission gratings, the so-called critical-angle transmission (CAT) gratings. They combine the advantages of traditional transmission gratings (very low mass, extremely relaxed alignment and flatness tolerances) with those of x-ray reflection gratings (high efficiency due to blazing in the direction of grazing-incidence reflection). In addition, a CAT grating spectrometer is well-suited for co-existence with energy-dispersive highenergy focal plane detectors, since most high-energy x rays are neither absorbed, nor diffracted, and contribute to the effective area at the telescope focus. Since our initial successful x-ray demonstrations of the CAT grating concept with large-period and lower aspect-ratio prototypes, we have now microfabricated 200 nm-period silicon CAT gratings comprised of grating bars with the required dimensions (6 micron tall, 40 nm wide, aspect ratio 150), optimized for the 0.3 to 1.0 keV energy band. We present Chandra-HETGS observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 104237 and the associated young stars comprising lower mass stars, in the 0.15-1.75\msol mass range, in their pre-main sequence phase. The brightest X-ray source in the association is the central system harboring the Herbig Ae primary, and a K3 companion. Its X-ray variability indicates modulation possibly on time scales of the rotation period of the Herbig Ae star, and this would imply that the primary significantly contributes to the overall emission. The spectrum of the Herbig Ae+K3 system shows a soft component significantly more pronounced than in other K-type young stars. This soft emission is reminiscent of the unusually soft spectra observed for the single Herbig Ae stars HD 163296 and AB Aur, and therefore we tentatively attribute it to the Herbig Ae of the binary system. The HETGS spectrum shows strong emission lines corresponding to a wide range of plasma temperatures. The He-like triplet of MgXI and NeIX suggest the presence of plasma at densities of about $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$, possibly indicating accretion related X-ray production mechanism. The analysis of the zero-order spectra of the other sources indicates X-ray emission characteristics typical of pre-main sequence stars of similar spectral type, with the exception of the T Tauri HD104237-D, whose extremely soft emission is very similar to the emission of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya, and suggests X-ray production by shocked accreting plasma., Comment: accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journal

We fit Chandra HETGS data obtained for the unusual X-ray binary SS 433. While line strengths and continuum levels hardly change, the jet Doppler shifts show aperiodic variations that probably result from shocks in interactions with the local environment. The X-ray and optical emission line regions are found to be related but not coincident as the optical line emission persists for days while the X-ray emission lines fade in less than 5000 s. The X-ray spectrum of the blue-shifted jet shows over two dozen emission lines from plasma at a variety of temperatures. Although the existence of large-scale hot gaseous halos around massive disk galaxies have been theorized for a long time, there is yet very little observational evidence. We report the Chandra and XMM-Newton grating spectral detection of OVII and NeIX Kalpha absorption lines along the sight-line of 4U 1957+11. The line absorption is consistent with the interstellar medium in origin. Attributing these line absorptions to the hot gas associated with the Galactic disk, we search for the gaseous halo around the Milky Way by comparing this sight-line with more distant ones (toward X-ray binary LMC X-3 and the AGN Mrk 421). We find that all the line absorptions along the LMC X-3 and Mrk 421 sight-lines are attributable to the hot gas in a thick Galactic disk, as traced by the absorption lines in the spectra of 4U~1957+11 after a Galactic latitude dependent correction. We constrain the OVII column density through the halo to be N(OVII) < 5E15 cm^{-2} (95% confidence limit), and conclude that the hot gas contribution to the metal line absorptions, if existing, is negligible., Comment: 4 pages, Accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters, no change except for fixing a typo in an author's name

We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple T Tauri star system Hen 3-600, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Two binary components were detected in the zeroth-order image. Hen 3-600-A, which has a large mid-infrared excess, is a 2-3 times fainter in X-rays than Hen 3-600-B, due to a large flare on B. The dispersed X-ray spectra of the two primary components overlap spatially; spectral analysis was performed on the combined system. Analysis of the individual spectra was limited to regions where the contributions of A and B can be disentangled. This analysis results in two lines of evidence indicating that the X-ray emission from Hen 3-600 is derived from accretion processes: line ratios of O VII indicate that the characteristic density of its X-ray-emitting plasma is large; a significant component of low-temperature plasma is present and is stronger in component A. These results are consistent with results obtained from X-ray gratings spectroscopy of more rapidly accreting systems. All of the signatures of Hen 3-600 that are potential diagnostics of accretion activity -- X-ray emission, UV excess, H-alpha emission, and weak infrared excess -- suggest that its components represent a transition phase between rapidly accreting, classical T Tauri stars and non-accreting, weak-lined T Tauri stars., Comment: latex, 27 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables; accepted by ApJ

[abridged] We report results from four recent observations of the ultracompact LMXB pulsar 4U 1626-67. All the observations obtained high-resolution X-ray spectra of the system, two from the Chandra X-ray Observatory using the HETGS, and two from the XMM-Newton Observatory using the RGS as well as the EPIC PN and MOS. These data allow us to study in detail the prominent Ne and O emission line complexes which make 4U 1626-67 unique among LMXBs. The observations were spaced over a period of 3 years for a total observing time of 238 ks, allowing us to monitor the line regions as well as the overall source flux, continuum spectrum, and timing properties. The structure of the emission lines and the ratios of the components of the helium-like Ne IX and O VII triplets support the hypothesis that they are formed in the high-density environment of the accretion disk. We do not find any significant changes in the line widths or ratios over this time period, though we note that the line equivalent widths decrease. We are able to place constraints on the strengths of the Ne K, Fe L, and O K photoelectric absorption edges, and find that the data do not require an overabundance of Ne or O in the system relative to the expected ISM values. We find that the pulsar is still spinning down, and note that the pulse profile has changed significantly from what was found prior to the torque reversal in 1990, suggesting that this event may be linked to a change in the geometry of the accretion column. The flux of 4U 1626-67 continues to decrease, in keeping with the trend of the last approximately 30 years over which it has been observed. Taking into consideration current theory on disk stability, we expect that 4U 1626-67 will enter a period of quiescence in 2-15 years., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

Massive stars rarely show intrinsic X-ray variability. The only O-stars credited to be intrinsically variable are theta1 Ori C due to effects from magnetic confinement of its wind, and theta2 Ori A suspected of similar activity. Early Chandra observations have shown that the most massive star system in the Orion Trapezium Cluster, theta2 Ori A, shows rapid variability on time scales of hours. We determine X-ray fluxes and find that the star shows very strong variability over the last 5 years. We observed a second large X-ray outburst in November 2004 with the high resolution transmission grating spectrometer on-board Chandra. In the low state X-ray emissivities indicate temperatures well above 25 MK. In the high state we find an extended emissivity distribution with high emissivities in the range from 3 MK to over 100 MK. The outburst event in stellar terms is one of the most powerful ever observed and the most energetic one in the ONC with a lower total energy limit of 1.5x10^37 ergs. The line diagnostics show that under the assumption that the line emitting regions in the low states are as close as within 1 -- 2 stellar radii from the O-star's photosphere, whereas the hard states suggest a distance of 3 -- 5 stellar radii. The two outbursts are very close to the periastron passage of the stars. We argue that the high X-ray states are possibly the result of reconnection events from magnetic interactions of the primary and secondary stars of the spectroscopic binary. Effects from wind collisions seem unlikely for this system. The low state emissivity and R-ratios strengthen the predicament that the X-ray emission is enhanced by magnetic confinement of the primary wind. We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neon K-shell and iron L-shell interstellar absorption edges in nine X-ray binaries using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found that the iron absorption is well fit by an experimental determination of the cross-section for metallic iron, although with a slight wavelength shift of ~20 mA. The neon edge region is best fit by a model that includes the neutral neon edge and three Gaussian absorption lines. We identify these lines as due to the 1s-2p transitions from Ne II, Ne III, and Ne IX. As we found in our oxygen edge study, the theoretical predictions for neutral and low-ionization lines all require shifts of ~20 mA to match our data. Combined with our earlier oxygen edge study, we find that a best fit O/Ne ratio of 5.4+/-1.6, consistent with standard interstellar abundances. Our best fit Fe/Ne ratio of 0.20+/-0.03 is significantly lower than the interstellar value. We attribute this difference to iron depletion into dust grains in the interstellar medium. We make the first measurement of the neon ionization fraction in the ISM. We find Ne II/Ne I ~ 0.3 and Ne III/Ne I ~ 0.07. These values are larger than is expected given the measured ionization of interstellar helium. We test the physical model of the relativistic jets in the galactic X-ray binary SS 433 proposed in our previous paper using additional observations from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. These observations sample two new orbital/precessional phase combinations. In the observation near orbital phase zero, the H- and He-like Fe lines from both receding and approaching jets are comparably strong and unocculted while the He-like Si line of the receding jet is significantly weaker than that of the approaching jet. This condition may imply the cooler parts of the receding jet are eclipsed by the companion. The X-ray spectrum from this observation has broader emission lines than obtained in Paper I that may arise from the divergence of a conical outflow or from Doppler shift variations during the observation. Using recent optical results, along with the length of the unobscured portion of the receding jet assuming adiabatic cooling, we calculate the radius of the companion to be 9.6+/-1.0 R_sun, about one third of the Roche lobe radius. For a main sequence star, this corresponds to a companion mass of 35+/-7 M_sun, giving a primary source mass of 20+/-5 M_sun. If our model is correct, this calculation indicates the compact object is a black hole, and accretion occurs through a wind process. We investigate the X-ray and near-infrared emission properties of a sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar systems in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) that display evidence for circumstellar disks (``proplyds'') and optical jets in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. Approximately 70% of ~140 proplyds were detected as X-ray sources in the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Program observation of the ONC, including ~25% of proplyds that do not display central stars in HST imaging. Many proplyds display near-infrared excesses, suggesting disk accretion is ongoing onto the central, PMS stars. Among circumstellar disks that are detected in absorption in HST imaging, we find that X-ray absorbing column and apparent disk inclination are well correlated, providing insight into the disk scale heights and metal abundances of UV- and X-ray-irradiated protoplanetary disks. Jet sources display some of the largest near-infrared excesses among the X-ray-detected proplyds, suggesting that the origin of the jets is closely related to ongoing, PMS stellar accretion. Some jet sources display double-peaked X-ray spectral energy distributions, with soft components indicative of strong shocks in the jet collimation region. Details of the design, fabrication, ground and flight calibration of the High Energy Transmission Grating, HETG, on the Chandra X-ray Observatory are presented after five years of flight experience. Specifics include the theory of phased transmission gratings as applied to the HETG, the Rowland design of the spectrometer, details of the grating fabrication techniques, and the results of ground testing and calibration of the HETG. In a previous paper we have described a technique to derive constraints on the differential emission measure (DEM) distribution, a measure of the temperature distribution, of collisionally ionized hot plasmas from their X-ray emission line spectra. We apply this technique to the Chandra/HETG spectra of all of the nine hot stars available to us at the time this project was initiated. We find that DEM distributions of six of the seven O stars in our sample are very similar but that theta Ori has an X-ray spectrum characterized by higher temperatures. The DEM distributions of both of B stars in our sample have lower magnitudes than those of the O stars and one, tau Sco, is characterized by higher temperatures than the other, beta Cru. These results confirm previous work in which high temperatures have been found for theta Ori and tau Sco and taken as evidence for channeling of the wind in magnetic fields, the existence of which are related to the stars' youth. We describe a technique to derive constraints on the differential emission measure (DEM) distribution, a measure of the temperature distribution, of collisionally ionized hot plasmas from their X-ray emission line spectra. This technique involves fitting spectra using a number of components, each of which is the entire X-ray line emission spectrum for a single ion. It is applicable to high-resolution X-ray spectra of any collisionally ionized plasma and particularly useful for spectra in which the emission lines are broadened and blended such as those of the winds of hot stars. This method does not require that any explicit assumptions about the form of the DEM distribution be made and is easily automated., Comment: This paper was split in two. This version is part I. We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple (hierarchical quadruple) weak-lined T Tauri star system HD 98800, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrograph (HETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). In the zeroth-order CXO/HETGS X-ray image, both principle binary components of HD 98800 (A and B, separation 0.8'') are detected; component A was observed to flare during the observation. The infrared excess (dust disk) component, HD 98800B, is a factor ~4 fainter in X-rays than the apparently ``diskless'' HD 98800A, in quiescence. The line ratios of He-like species (e.g., Ne IX, O VII) in the HD 98800A spectrum indicate that the X-ray-emitting plasma around HD 98800 is in a typical coronal density regime (log n <~ 11). We conclude that the dominant X-ray-emitting component(s) of HD 98800 is (are) coronally active. The sharp spectral differences between HD 98800 and the classical T Tauri star TW Hya demonstrate the potential utility of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy in providing diagnostics of pre-main sequence accretion processes., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; to appear in the Astrophysical Journal (Letters)

We further investigate subpixel event repositioning (SER) algorithms in application to Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) CCD imaging. SER algorithms have been applied to backside illuminated (BI) Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) devices, and demonstrate spatial resolution improvements in Chandra/ACIS observations. Here a new SER algorithm that is charge split dependent is added to the SER family. We describe the application of SER algorithms to frontside illuminated (FI) ACIS devices. The results of SER for FI CCDs are compared with those obtained from SER techniques applied to BI CCD event data. Both simulated data and Chandra/ACIS observations of the Orion Nebular Cluster were used to test and evaluate the achievement of the various SER techniques., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

(Abbrev.) We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the oxygen K-shell interstellar absorption edge in 7 X-ray binaries using the HETGS onboard Chandra. Using the brightest sources as templates, we found a best-fit model of 2 absorption edges and 5 Gaussian absorption lines. All of these features can be explained by the recent predictions of K-shell absorption from neutral and ionized atomic oxygen. We identify the K alpha and K beta absorption lines from neutral oxygen, as well as the S=3/2 absorption edge. The expected S=1/2 edge is not detected in these data due to overlap with instrumental features. We also identify the K alpha absorption lines from singly and doubly ionized oxygen. The OI K alpha absorption line is used as a benchmark with which to adjust the absolute wavelength scale for theoretical predictions of the absorption cross-sections. We find that shifts of 30-50 mA are required, consistent with differences previously noticed from comparisons of the theory with laboratory measurements. Significant oxygen features from dust or molecular components, as suggested in previous studies, are not required by our HETGS spectra. With these spectra, we can begin to measure the large-scale properties of the ISM. We place a limit on the velocity dispersion of the neutral lines of <200 km s^{-1}, consistent with measurements at other wavelengths. We also make the first measurement of the oxygen ionization fractions in the ISM. Spectroscopy with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer provides details on X-ray emission and activity from young and cool stars through resolution of emission lines from a variety of ions. We are beginning to see trends in activity regarding abundances, emission measures, and variability. Here we contrast spectra of TV Crt, a weak-lined T Tauri star, with TW Hya, a Classical T Tauri star. TV Crt has a spectrum more like magnetic activity driven coronae, relative to the TW Hya spectrum, which we have interpreted as due to accretion-produced X-rays. We have also observed the long period system, IM Pegasi to search for rotational modulation, and to compare activity in a long period active binary to shorter period systems and to the pre-main sequence stars. We analyzed high resolution X-ray spectra in the wavelength range of 1.5 -- 25 A of three of its X-ray brightest members obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on-board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The DEM derived from over 80 emission lines in the spectrum of Theta Ori C indicates three peaks located at 7.9 MK, 25 MK, and 66 MK. The emission measure varies over the 15.4 day wind period of the star. For the two phases observed, the low temperature emission remains stable, while the high temperature emission shows significant differences. The line widths seem to show a similar bifurcation, where we resolve some of the soft X-ray lines with velocities up to 850 km/s, whereas the bulk of the lines remain unresolved. None of the lines are resolved for Theta Ori A and E. The high temperature emissivity contributes to most of the total X-ray flux in all stars. The bulk of the X-ray emission cannot be produced by shock instabilities in a radiation driven wind and are likely the result of magnetic confinement in all three stars. The fact that all stars appear to be magnetic and are near zero age on the main sequence also raises the issue whether the Orion stars are simply different or whether young massive stars enter the main sequence carrying significant magnetic fields., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted by ApJ
