161. Effect of air and water on the release of chlorine from semi-aerobic landfill.

Abstract

Landfill leachate has a high chloride (Cl−) content. Because it is highly mobile, and cannot be sorbed or transformed bio-chemically, it is important to have detailed information about how it migrates in landfill sites. In this study, we set up four lab-scale simulated landfills, including an anaerobic landfill (AL), an anaerobic landfill with leachate recirculation (RAL), an anaerobic/semi-anaerobic landfill with leachate recirculation (RASL), and an anaerobic/semi-aerobic landfill (ASL), to explore how, when regulated, moisture and air affected the migration of chlorine. We found that water and air had a strong influence on the release of Cl−. Leachate obviously promoted Cl− dissolution in refuse when recirculated. When air was introduced into landfill, thereby changing it from anaerobic to semi-aerobic, the leachate Cl− concentration increased sharply from around 4–9 g L−1 (RASL) and 18 g L−1 (ASL), respectively. In principle, Cl− is released continuously when leachate is recirculated in landfills (RAL and RASL), but it can also be found a terminal when the leachate recirculation stops (AL and ASL). Cumulative amounts of 64, 66, 27, and 53 g of Cl− were released from the AL, RAL, RASL, and ASL, respectively. Lower COD/Cl and N H 4 + -N/Cl ratios in ASL and RASL after day 175 indicated that lower Cl− pollution risk than that in AL and RAL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as value-added platform chemical can be derived from biomass. This study used microwave hydrothermal liquefaction (MHTL) to obtain HMF from sugarcane bagasse in acidic seawater conditions. The key processing parameters including temperature, reaction time, and liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) were evaluated and optimized. The highest HMF yield of 8.1 wt% was obtained at 149 °C with a reaction time of 4 min and a L/S value of 12:1, respectively. This yield is considerable and even higher than the yield derived from sugarcane molasses under similar microwave conditions in the absence of seawater. Hence, acidic seawater was found to promote the hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse to give HMF precursor (i.e. fructose and glucose), while simultaneously inhibiting the conversion of HMF to levulinic acid under MHTL conditions, possibly explaining the high HMF yield. This method presents a new and sustainable means of transforming waste biomass to valuable substances using seawater or brine wastewater. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

Abstract

The present study describes the conversion of zinc into a sulfide-containing plating sludge via a microwave hydrothermal sulfidation (MHS) process for use in heavy metal remediation by flotation. The research herein focused on circumventing the operational issues of traditional hydrothermal sulfidation (THS) at high temperature and high pressure. The following optimized process conditions of temperature 153°C, reaction time 63 min, liquid-to-solid ratio 16:1 and S2− concentration 49% were obtained using a single-factor test and the Box–Behnken design test, to yield a maximum sulfidation ratio of 92.90%. 186. Endogenous mitigation of H2S inside of landfills

Abstract

Vast quantities of H2S emitted from landfill sites require urgent disposal. The current study focuses on source control and examines the migration and conversion behaviour of sulfur compounds in two lab-scale simulated landfills with different operation modes. It aims to explore the possible strategies and mechanisms for H2S endogenous mitigation inside of landfills during decomposition. It is found that the strength of H2S emissions from the landfill sites depends on the municipal solid waste (MSW) degradation speed and vertical distribution of sulfide. Leachate recirculation can shorten both the H2S influence period and pollution risk to the surrounding environment. H2S endogenous mitigation may be achieved by chemical oxidation, biological oxidation, adsorption and/or precipitation in different stages. Migration and conversion mainly affects H2S release behaviour during the initial stabilization phase in the landfill. Microbial activities related to sulfur, nitrogen and iron can further promote H2S endogenous mitigation during the high reduction phase. Thus, H2S endogenous mitigation can be effectively enhanced via the control of the aforementioned processes.
