Edible insects represent a growing sector of the food industry and have a low carbon footprint. Noteworthy, insects can upcycle different leftovers and byproducts into high-quality nutrients. Herein, the larvae of the edible insect Tenebrio molitor (TML) were fed using local milk industry byproducts. Mozzarella whey and whey permeate obtained in cheese production were used to formulate three alternative diets. Both byproducts are rich in sugars, in particular the disaccharide lactose and the monosaccharides glucose and galactose. Two of the three diets did not interfere with biometric data and vitality, while the use of whey permeate alone significantly reduced development. At the end of the trial, the proximate composition of TML was strongly affected, with an increased protein content of up to +7% and a favorable fat composition. The analysis of secondary metabolites revealed the accumulation of different compounds, in particular monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), amino acids, and the disaccharide trehalose, essential for the correct larval development and pupation. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that milk industry byproducts can be upcycled as feed for TML, maintaining an optimal nutrient composition and favorably increasing the protein content.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring autoimmune disease requiring long-term treatments. Topical, intralesional or systemic corticosteroids are the first option. However, considering the risk of skin atrophy and the possible lack of clinical response, new treatment options are urgently needed. A fractional carbon dioxide laser (FCL) has been proven to be effective alone or in combination with other drugs. However, no study has ever evaluated the association between FCL and topical tacrolimus. We report three cases of AA resistant to corticosteroids for at least 12 months, treated with topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment and FCL on some patches. After 16 weeks from the beginning of treatment, all patients showed improvement in clinical and trichoscopic parameters in the areas treated in combination. FCL and tacrolimus may represent a new therapeutic option, but further studies are needed for confirmation.

Anti-cancer therapies have been limited by emergence of mutations and other adaptations. In bacteria, antibiotics activate the SOS response, which mobilizes error-prone factors that allow for continuous replication at the cost of mutagenesis. We investigated whether treatment of lung cancer with EGFR inhibitors (EGFRi) similarly engages hypermutators. In cycling drug-tolerant persister (DTP) cells and in EGFRi-treated patients presenting residual disease we observed upregulation of GAS6, while ablation of GAS6's receptor, AXL, eradicated resistance. Reciprocally, AXL overexpression enhanced DTP survival and accelerated the emergence of T790M, an EGFR mutation typical to resistant cells. Mechanistically, AXL induces low-fidelity DNA polymerases and activates their organizer, RAD18, by promoting neddylation. Metabolomics uncovered another hypermutator, AXL-driven activation of MYC and increased purine synthesis that is unbalanced by pyrimidines. Aligning anti-AXL combination treatments with the transition from DTPs to resistant cells cured patient-derived xenografts. Hence, similar to bacteria, tumors tolerate therapy by engaging pharmacologically targetable endogenous mutators.

Focal cortical dysplasia is a highly epileptogenic cortical malformation with few treatment options. Here, we generated human cortical organoids from patients with focal cortical dysplasia type II. Using this human model, we mimicked some focal cortical dysplasia hallmarks, such as impaired cell proliferation, the presence of dysmorphic neurons and balloon cells, and neuronal network hyperexcitability. Furthermore, we observed alterations in the adherens junctions zonula occludens-1 and partitioning defective 3, reduced polarization of the actin cytoskeleton, and fewer synaptic puncta. Focal cortical dysplasia cortical organoids showed downregulation of the small GTPase RHOA, a finding that was confirmed in brain tissue resected from these patients. Functionally, both spontaneous and optogenetically-evoked electrical activity revealed hyperexcitability and enhanced network connectivity in focal cortical dysplasia organoids. Taken together, our findings suggest a ventricular zone instability in tissue cohesion of neuroepithelial cells, leading to a maturational arrest of progenitors or newborn neurons, which may predispose to cellular and functional immaturity and compromise the formation of neural networks in focal cortical dysplasia.

The AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5345 study (NCT03001128) included an intensively monitored antiretroviral pause (IMAP), during which participants living with HIV temporarily stopped antiretroviral treatment (ART) in an effort to identify biomarkers that could predict HIV rebound. We evaluated the potential impact of the IMAP on A5345 study participants in the United States by questioning them immediately after the IMAP and at the end of the study. We administered longitudinal sociobehavioral questionnaires to participants following the IMAP when they resumed ART and at the end of the study. We summarized descriptive data from the post-IMAP and end-of-study questionnaires. Open-ended responses were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Reactions to pausing ART involved a mixture of curiosity and satisfaction from contributing to science. All participants indicated adherence with the ART interruption. About half (9/17) of post-IMAP questionnaire respondents reported having sexual partner(s) during the IMAP, and of those, nearly all (8/9) did not find it difficult to use measures to prevent HIV transmission to partners. The majority believed that they benefited from the study, yet some had elevated anxiety following the IMAP and at the end of the study. Most (24/29) respondents who completed the end-of-study questionnaire would recommend the study to other people living with HIV. Our findings underscore the relevance of the psychosocial aspects of participating in studies that involve interruptions of ART. Understanding how participants experience this research is invaluable for informing the design of future research aimed at sustained ART-free virologic suppression.

In this paper, we report on a study that sought to examine how Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers, working in Cypriot public schools, combine pedagogies of ECE and inclusive education. We were also interested in how having children with disabilities in their classes informed their practices. We purposively selected and interviewed seven female teachers who, according to our judgement, had good knowledge of the ECE theoretical framework and commitment to inclusive education. We followed a thematic and a narrative approach to analyse the data, and presented the findings in the form of a portrait narrative of an imaginary teacher. The discussion maps the repertoire of practices across the assumptions of inclusive and ECE pedagogies. In our conclusion, we offer these practical implications: inclusive ECE teachers should be knowledgeable of ECE theory and praxis, committed to the assumptions of inclusive pedagogies, and work individually and collectively to educate all children.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, children with disabilities were confronted with ableist discourses that justified unfair policy measures. This study is concerned with the discourses recorded in a range of education documents, published during the pandemic within the Republic of Cyprus. It employs an interdisciplinary framework, informed by Critical Discourse Analysis, Inclusive Education, and Critical Disability Studies, to examine the powerful actors and the ideologies that influenced the formation of discourses. The paper undertakes a critical interpretation of the disability discourses developed in Cyprus during the pandemic, links this with other relevant research conducted in other European countries prior to and during the pandemic, and suggests policy actions/measures that value children with disabilities and their families.

Best practices for technology use in academic settings, specifically those preparing students for postsecondary transition (ages 18-21) are not well documented and research studies commenting on the use of technology for acquisition of social and adaptive skills is limited. Literature indicates that students with mild-moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) benefit from adaptive-skills programs and curricula. School psychologists, special educators, and school-based interventionists are in a unique position to provide adaptive skill services and tier-3 interventions that are evidence-based, innovative, and serve the most vulnerable students. This manuscript utilizes a sign-case design to test the use of virtual reality (VR) as an individualized intervention and teaching modality to a student in a center-based high school program with IDD. Results yield promising findings, indicating those with IDD may master VR as a tool, learn new skills with VR programming, and generalize those skills to real-world settings. Further, VR offers unique benefits that can shape the way school interventionists view technology and how innovative practices can be used for students with IDD.

Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) have reduced access to sexuality education at school, tasking families with filling the gap. This limited access contributes to persistent health inequities, psychosocial risk, and reduced self-determination for individuals with ID. To understand the resources that families may encounter when filling this service gap, a naturalistic scoping review and content analysis of ID-specific sexual health curricula (SHC) was conducted. This analysis found a limited number of SHC available to family members who may seek them out online, and even fewer SHC designed for the specific needs of family-led delivery. While curricula identified in this study generally include the minimum recommended content areas for comprehensive sexuality education, they less frequently provide actionable guidelines for caregivers tasked with adapting teaching practices and outcomes assessment to the diverse profiles of students with ID. By understanding the SHC available to families of students with ID, school psychologists can improve their partnerships with families, disseminate needed resources, implement collaborative intervention practices, and advocate for inclusive sexuality education practices.

Abstract Advancements in comprehending myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) have unfolded significantly in recent years, elucidating a myriad of cellular and molecular underpinnings integral to disease progression. While molecular inclusions into prognostic models have substantively advanced risk stratification, recent revelations have emphasized the pivotal role of immune dysregulation within the bone marrow milieu during MDS evolution. Nonetheless, immunotherapy for MDS has not experienced breakthroughs seen in other malignancies, partly attributable to the absence of an immune classification that could stratify patients toward optimally targeted immunotherapeutic approaches. A pivotal obstacle to establishing “immune classes” among MDS patients is the absence of validated accepted immune panels suitable for routine application in clinical laboratories. In response, we formed International Integrative Innovative Immunology for MDS (i4MDS), a consortium of multidisciplinary experts, and created the following recommendations for standardized methodologies to monitor immune responses in MDS. A central goal of i4MDS is the development of an immune score that could be incorporated into current clinical risk stratification models. This position paper first consolidates current knowledge on MDS immunology. Subsequently, in collaboration with clinical and laboratory specialists, we introduce flow cytometry panels and cytokine assays, meticulously devised for clinical laboratories, aiming to monitor the immune status of MDS patients, evaluating both immune fitness and identifying potential immune “risk factors.” By amalgamating this immunological characterization data and molecular data, we aim to enhance patient stratification, identify predictive markers for treatment responsiveness, and accelerate the development of systems immunology tools and innovative immunotherapies.

BackgroundThere is evidence that social interaction has an inverse association with the development of neurodegenerative diseases. PREDICT-Parkinson Disease (PREDICT-PD) is an online UK cohort study that stratifies participants for risk of future Parkinson disease (PD). ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the methodological approach and feasibility of assessing the digital social characteristics of people at risk of developing PD and their social capital within the PREDICT-PD platform, making hypotheses about the relationship between web-based social engagement and potential predictive risk indicators of PD. MethodsA web-based application was built to enable social interaction through the PREDICT-PD portal. Feedback from existing members of the cohort was sought and informed the design of the pilot. Dedicated staff used weekly engagement activities, consisting of PD-related research, facts, and queries, to stimulate discussion. Data were collected by the hosting platform. We examined the pattern of connections generated over time through the cumulative number of posts and replies and ego networks using social network analysis. We used network metrics to describe the bonding, bridging, and linking of social capital among participants on the platform. Relevant demographic data and Parkinson risk scores (expressed as an odd 1:x) were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Regression analysis was conducted to estimate the relationship between risk scores (after log transformation) and network measures. ResultsOverall, 219 participants took part in a 4-month pilot forum embedded in the study website. In it, 200 people (n=80, 40% male and n=113, 57% female) connected in a large group, where most pairs of users could reach one another either directly or indirectly through other users. A total of 59% (20/34) of discussions were spontaneously started by participants. Participation was asynchronous, with some individuals acting as “brokers” between groups of discussions. As more participants joined the forum and connected to one another through online posts, distinct groups of connected users started to emerge. This pilot showed that a forum application within the cohort web platform was feasible and acceptable and fostered digital social interaction. Matching participants’ web-based social engagement with previously collected data at individual level in the PREDICT-PD study was feasible, showing potential for future analyses correlating online network characteristics with the risk of PD over time, as well as testing digital social engagement as an intervention to modify the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. ConclusionsThe results from the pilot suggest that an online forum can serve as an intervention to enhance social connectedness and investigate whether patterns of online engagement can impact the risk of developing PD through long-term follow-up. This highlights the potential of leveraging online platforms to study the role of social capital in moderating PD risk and underscores the feasibility of such approaches in future research or interventions.

The increasing use of the super high-density (SHD) olive orchard system requires a careful assessment of its potential impact on the main olive pests. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the SHD effect on Bactrocera oleae and other harmful phytophagous species by assessing damages caused by each pest. For three years, in three different sites in Tuscany established with Italian selection or Spanish Arbequina cultivars, the SHD management system was compared to an adjacent traditional olive orchard system in which the same soil and phytosanitary management were applied. Samplings of twigs and fruits from spring to fall together with adult monitoring of B. oleae, Prays oleae, and Palpita vitrealis by pheromone traps were used to determine infestation percentages and insects’ population dynamics. Bactrocera oleae, Liothrips oleae, and Euphillura olivina were negatively affected by the SHD olive orchard system, while P. vitrealis and Otiorhynchus cribricollis were favoured by this management. Bactrocera oleae total infestation was reduced to almost 50% in the SHD system. In contrast, Palpita vitrealis showed high infestation levels in more vigorous cultivars. Further studies are required for a complete evaluation of the impact of SHD management on olive pests.

Acredita-se que o Programa Jovem Aprendiz oferece aos jovens a oportunidade de adquirir conhecimento teórico e prático, capacitando-os para o mercado de trabalho e promovendo a inclusão social. Sendo assim, essa pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar as percepções dos estudantes do curso de Aprendizagem Comercial do SENAC de Frederico Westphalen, Rio Grande do Sul, acerca da inserção no mercado do trabalho. Metodologicamente trata-se de uma pesquisa básica, qualitativa e descritiva em formato de estudo de caso. Teve os dados coletados por meio de um questionário on-line que foi aplicado com os estudantes das turmas ingressantes no ano de 2022. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio de análise de conteúdo. Como resultados destaca-se o reconhecimento por parte dos jovens sobre a importância que o programa Jovem Aprendiz exerce nas suas vidas no que diz respeito à qualificação e inserção no mercado de trabalho.

Resumo O conhecimento sobre a relação entre políticas públicas, partidos e voto para presidente no Brasil está fortemente concentrado em análises de programas de transferência de renda, o que limita a compreensão sobre como diferentes aspectos do desenho e implementação das políticas se relacionam com o jogo partidário-eleitoral. Neste artigo, por meio de regressões lineares aplicadas a todos os municípios brasileiros, analisamos a dinâmica eleitoral da política habitacional Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida, considerando desde sua criação até as eleições de 2014, com resultados detalhados por modalidades, fases de implementação e aderência ao deficit habitacional. As estimativas mostram que cidades governadas por partidos pertencentes à coalizão do governo federal não receberam mais unidades habitacionais, à exceção da modalidade direcionada para o eleitorado mais pobre. Além disso, o retorno eleitoral obtido pelo PT foi positivo quando a implementação do programa esteve relacionada com o deficit habitacional, particularmente em 2010.

BackgroundThe incidence of stroke in children is low, and pediatric stroke rehabilitation services are less developed than adult ones. Survivors of pediatric stroke have a long poststroke life expectancy and therefore have the potential to experience impairments from their stroke for many years. However, there are relatively few studies characterizing these impairments and what factors facilitate or counteract recovery. ObjectiveThis study aims to characterize the main barriers to and facilitators of recovery from pediatric stroke. A secondary aim was to explore whether these factors last into adulthood, whether they change, or if new factors impacting recovery emerge in adulthood. MethodsWe performed a qualitative thematic analysis based on posts from a population of participants from a UK-based online stroke community, active between 2004 and 2011. The analysis focused on users who talked about their experiences with pediatric stroke, as identified by a previous study. The posts were read by 3 authors, and factors influencing recovery from pediatric stroke were mapped into 4 areas: medical, physical, emotional, and social. Factors influencing recovery were divided into short-term and long-term factors. ResultsThere were 425 posts relating to 52 survivors of pediatric stroke. Some survivors of stroke posted for themselves, while others were talked about by a third party (mostly parents; 31/35, 89% mothers). In total, 79% (41/52) of survivors of stroke were aged ≤18 years and 21% (11/52) were aged >18 years at the time of posting. Medical factors included comorbidities as a barrier to recovery. Medical interventions, such as speech and language therapy and physiotherapy, were also deemed useful. Exercise, particularly swimming, was deemed a facilitator. Among physical factors, fatigue and chronic pain could persist decades after a stroke, with both reported as a barrier to feeling fully recovered. Tiredness could worsen existing stroke-related impairments. Other long-standing impairments were memory loss, confusion, and dizziness. Among emotional factors, fear and uncertainty were short-term barriers, while positivity was a major facilitator in both short- and long-term recovery. Anxiety, grief, and behavioral problems hindered recovery. The social barriers were loneliness, exclusion, and hidden disabilities not being acknowledged by third parties. A good support network and third-party support facilitated recovery. Educational services were important in reintegrating survivors into society. Participants reported that worrying about losing financial support, such as disability allowances, and difficulties in obtaining travel insurance and driving licenses impacted recovery. ConclusionsThe lived experience of survivors of pediatric stroke includes long-term hidden disabilities and barriers to rehabilitation. These are present in different settings, such as health care, schools, workplaces, and driving centers. Greater awareness of these issues by relevant professional groups may help ameliorate them.

IntroductionThe increasing population of survivors of head and neck carcinomas is becoming more conspicuous. Consequently, the pivotal role of quality of life, particularly elucidated through the assessment of dysphagia and dysphonia, is progressively influencing the decision-making process. The current study aims to assess whether VITOM 3D could offer a comparable post-treatment quality of life to traditional approaches for patients with laryngeal cancer and oro-hypopharyngeal cancer.MethodsA case series of laryngeal cancer and oro-hypopharyngeal cancer patients treated either with an exoscopic-assisted surgical setup and with conventional treatments (transoral microsurgery and radio-chemotherapy) at the Otolaryngology Unit of IRCCS San Martino Hospital, Genoa, is presented. The post-treatment quality of life of the two cohorts were compared through the administration of the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire, Voiceik Handicap Index-10, M.D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory were administrated to both cohorts of patients.ResultsIn the laryngeal cancer group, a total of 79 patients were included. Of these, 50.1% underwent transoral exoscope-assisted surgery, while 49.9% underwent primary transoral microscopic-assisted surgical approach. No significant differences were observed in terms of the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire and Voice Handicap Index-10 between the two subgroups. Conversely, in the oro-hypopharyngeal cancer group, 43 patients were included. Of these, 37.2% underwent primary transoral exoscope-assisted surgery, while 62.8% received (chemo)radiotherapy. No notable differences were reported in terms of the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire and M.D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory between the transoral exoscope-assisted surgery and (chemo)radiotherapy subgroups.ConclusionsAssessments of quality of life, conducted through the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire questionnaire, dysphonia evaluations using the Voice Handicap Index-10, and dysphagia assessments employing the M.D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory questionnaire, demonstrate analogous outcomes between conventional treatment modalities and transoral interventions utilizing the 3D exoscope.

Rationale and objectives: Imaging plays a key role in Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis diagnosis and severity assessment. In the last two decades, signs and measurements emerged in literature showed potential to help in SCFE diagnosis and tailoring treatment. The purpose of this review is to collect and discuss new imaging signs, measurements, and techniques according to investigations published after 2000 to improve SCFE diagnosis. Material and methods: The PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases were used to search for relevant articles related to imaging in SCFE diagnosis from January 2000 to March 2023. Article selection and review was performed by two board-certified radiologists). Article quality assessment were conducted by authors using QUADAS-2 and SANRA evaluation tools. Results: The research resulted in a total of 2577 articles. After duplicates removal and abstract analysis, 28 articles were finally selected for full-text analysis. Seventeen articles were focused on Radiographs, 6 on CT, 1 on both Radiographs and CT, 4 on MRI. No study focused on ultrasound was selected. Conclusions: Use of modified Klein's line and S-sign may improve radiographs accuracy in daily routine. Lucency sign may help in early diagnosis on radiographs. Preoperative CT may be useful in planning a tailored treatment predicting SCFE severity and instability. MRI is the most accurate modality to diagnose SCFE at early stage. Nevertheless, it cannot be used to predict the risk of contralateral SCFE. Risk prediction can be assessed with radiographs, using a new rapid mOBS. Further investigation and validation of these sign is needed.

Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) commonly afflict people with diabetes. To better understand the mechanisms that predispose diabetics to UTIs, we employ diabetic mouse models and altered insulin signaling to show that insulin receptor (IR) shapes UTI defenses. Our findings are validated in human biosamples. We report that diabetic mice have suppressed IR expression and are more susceptible to UTIs caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Systemic IR inhibition increases UPEC susceptibility, while IR activation reduces UTIs. Localized IR deletion in bladder urothelium promotes UTI by increasing barrier permeability and suppressing antimicrobial peptides. Mechanistically, IR deletion reduces nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)-dependent programming that co-regulates urothelial tight junction integrity and antimicrobial peptides. Exfoliated urothelial cells or urine samples from diabetic youths show suppressed expression of IR, barrier genes, and antimicrobial peptides. These observations demonstrate that urothelial insulin signaling has a role in UTI prevention and link IR to urothelial barrier maintenance and antimicrobial peptide expression.

The conservationist mentality of classifying pristine and degraded environments has given way to a more intelligent approach, that is, producing and applying knowledge to increase and support biodiversity in human habitats. Cities have a high potential for the conservation of biological diversity, but it is not fully feasible without considerable planning and management inputs. There are many ecosystem services provided by trees in urban ecological systems, whose positive impact on human well-being is consensual in the literature. Likewise, the capacity of urban flora, especially woody vegetation, to attract and support fauna has been proven in several studies. Tropical megadiverse countries whose cities are undergoing rapid urbanization such as Brazil face the double challenge of creating cities that can support biological diversity, with environmental justice. The most important tool for solving these demands is urban afforestation planning. However, the capacity of Brazilian cities to plan and execute tree-planting projects is low. In this essay, we discuss the main difficulties related to urban afforestation in Brazil and present some alternatives for increasing the number of trees and species and for the democratization of their benefits, especially in neighborhoods with low socioeconomic status

IntroductionPrior to pregnancy, hormonal changes lead to cellular adaptations in the endometrium allowing for embryo implantation. Critical for successful pregnancy establishment, innate immune cells constitute a significant proportion of uterine cells prior to arrival of the embryo and throughout the first trimester in humans and animal models. Abnormal uterine immune cell function during implantation is believed to play a role in multiple adverse pregnancy outcomes. Current work in humans has focused on uterine immune cells present after pregnancy establishment, and limited in vitro models exist to explore unique functions of these cells.MethodsWith single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNAseq), we comprehensively compared the human uterine immune landscape of the endometrium during the window of implantation and the decidua during the first trimester of pregnancy.ResultsWe uncovered global and cell-type-specific gene signatures for each timepoint. Immune cells in the endometrium prior to implantation expressed genes associated with immune metabolism, division, and activation. In contrast, we observed widespread interferon signaling during the first trimester of pregnancy. We also provide evidence of specific inflammatory pathways enriched in pre- and post-implantation macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells in the uterine lining. Using our novel implantation-on-a-chip (IOC) to model human implantation ex vivo, we demonstrate for the first time that uterine macrophages strongly promote invasion of extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs), a process essential for pregnancy establishment. Pre- and post-implantation uterine macrophages promoted EVT invasion to a similar degree as pre- and post-implantation NK cells on the IOC.ConclusionsThis work provides a foundation for further investigation of the individual roles of uterine immune cell subtypes present prior to embryo implantation and during early pregnancy, which will be critical for our understanding of pregnancy complications associated with abnormal trophoblast invasion and placentation.

BackgroundPediatric stroke is relatively rare and underresearched, and there is little awareness of its occurrence in wider society. There is a paucity of literature on the effectiveness of interventions to improve rehabilitation and the services available to survivors. Access to online health communities through the internet may be a means of support for patients with pediatric stroke and their families during recovery; however, little research has been done in this area. ObjectiveThis study aims to identify the types of social support provided by an online peer support group to survivors of pediatric stroke and their families. MethodsThis was a qualitative thematic analysis of posts from a pediatric stroke population on a UK online stroke community active between 2004 and 2011. The population was split into 2 groups based on whether stroke survivors were aged ≤18 years or aged >18 years at the time of posting. The posts were read by 2 authors who used the adapted Social Support Behavior Code to analyze the types of social support exchanged. ResultsA total of 52 participants who experienced a pediatric stroke were identified, who posted a total of 425 messages to the community. About 41 survivors were aged ≤18 years at the time of posting and were written about by others (31/35 were mothers), while 11 were aged >18 years and were writing about themselves. Survivors and their families joined together in discussion threads. Support was offered and received by all participants, regardless of age. Of all 425 posts, 193 (45.4%) contained at least 1 instance of social support. All 5 types of social support were identified: informational, emotional, network, esteem support, and tangible aid. Informational and emotional support were most commonly exchanged. Emotional support was offered more often than informational support among participants aged ≤18 years at the time of posting; this finding was reversed in the group aged >18 years. Network support and esteem support were less commonly exchanged. Notably, the access subcategory of network support was not exchanged with the community. Tangible aid was the least commonly offered type of support. The exchanged social support provided insight into rehabilitation interventions and the unmet needs of pediatric stroke survivors. ConclusionsWe found evidence of engagement of childhood stroke survivors and their families in an online stroke community, with peer support being exchanged between both long- and short-term survivors of pediatric stroke. Engagement of long-term survivors of pediatric stroke through the online community was key, as they were able to offer informational support from lived experience. Further interventional research is needed to assess health and rehabilitation outcomes from engagement with online support groups. Research is also needed to ensure safe, nurturing online communities.

The microbiological monitoring of bivalve mollusk harvesting areas in the Marche region is based on the parameters of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. However, Regulation EU/2019/627 stated criteria based on E. coli only to determine the health status of these areas. Therefore, the reason for Salmonella spp. monitoring, as provided in the Marche region, could be aimed at reducing the risk of placing on the market contaminated bivalve mollusks. This study, using the results of microbiological monitoring carried out in the Marche region from 2015 to 2022 and the methods based on Bayes' theorem and Poisson’s distribution, evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of Salmonella spp. monitoring in reducing the risk to the consumer. The results show that i) the use of a single sample unit significantly reduced the possibility of detecting non-compliance with the microbiological safety criterion; ii) the time taken to report positive results (average of approximately 10 days) did not allow the timely implementation of control measures; iii) the prevalence of positive outcomes was quite sporadic: a random trend of positivity is recognizable on a geographical and monthly basis for mussels and a geographical basis for striped clams; iv) considering the predictive value of E. coli against Salmonella spp., the specificity is very high and the negative predictive value versus Salmonella spp. would be >80%. In conclusion, the study shows that the monitoring of Salmonella spp. has a limited effect on reducing the risk to the consumer; however, in the cost/benefit assessment, other aspects not covered by this study should be considered.

The growing phenomenon of population aging is redefining demographic dynamics, intensifying age-related conditions, especially dementia, projected to triple by 2050 with an enormous global economic burden. This study investigates visual arts-mediated Cognitive Activation Therapy (CAT) as a non-pharmacological CAT intervention targets both biological aging [leukocyte telomere length (LTL), DNA methylation age (DNAmAge)] and cognitive functionality. Aligning with a broader trend of integrating non-pharmacological approaches into dementia care. The longitudinal study involved 20 patients with mild to moderate neurocognitive disorders. Cognitive and functional assessments, and biological aging markers -i.e., LTL and DNAmAge- were analyzed before and after CAT intervention. Change in LTL was positively correlated with days of treatment (p =0.0518). LTL significantly elongated after intervention (p =0.0269), especially in men (p =0.0142), correlating with younger age (p =0.0357), and higher education (p =0.0008). DNAmAge remained instead stable post-treatment. Cognitive and functional improvements were observed for Copy of complex geometric figure, Progressive Silhouettes, Position Discrimination, Communication Activities of Daily Living—Second edition, Direct Functional Status (p < 0.0001) and Object decision (p =0.0594), but no correlations were found between LTL and cognitive gains. Visual arts-mediated CAT effectively mitigates cellular aging, especially in men, by elongating LTL. These findings underscore the potential of non-pharmacological interventions in enhancing cognitive and functional status and general well-being in dementia care. Further research with larger and longer-term studies is essential for validation.

Penalty kicks are increasingly decisive in major international football competitions. Yet, over 30% of shootout kicks are missed. The outcome of the kick often relies on the ability of the penalty taker to exploit anticipatory movements of the goalkeeper to redirect the kick toward the open side of the goal. Unfortunately, this ability is difficult to train using classical methods. We used an augmented reality simulator displaying an holographic goalkeeper to test and train penalty kick performance with 13 young elite players. Machine learning algorithms were used to optimize the learning rate by maintaining an optimal level of training difficulty. Ten training sessions of 20 kicks reduced the redirection threshold by 120 ms, which constituted a 28% reduction with respect to the baseline threshold. Importantly, redirection threshold reduction was observed for all trained players, and all things being equal, it corresponded to an estimated 35% improvement of the success rate.

The total angular momentum of a closed system is a conserved quantity, which should remain constant in time for any excitation experiment once the pumping signal has been extinguished. Such conservation, however, is never satisfied in practice in any real-time first-principles description of the demagnetization process. Furthermore, there is growing experimental evidence that the same takes place in experiments. The missing angular momentum is usually associated to lattice vibrations, which are not measured experimentally and are never considered in real-time simulations. Here we critically analyze the issue and conclude that current state-of-the-art simulations violate angular momentum conservation already at the electronic level of description. This shortcoming originates from an oversimplified description of the spin-orbit coupling, which includes atomic contributions but neglects completely that of itinerant electrons. We corroborate our findings with time-dependent simulations using model tight-binding Hamiltonians, and show that indeed such conservation can be reintroduced by an appropriate choice of spin-orbit coupling. The consequences of our findings on recent experiments are also discussed.
