Background Executive functions (EFs) are critical to daily life and sensitive to our physiological functioning and emotional states. The number of people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) globally is increasing steadily. We aimed to determine the impact of a single session of HD on EFs in patients with CKD receiving maintenance HD (MHD). Methods This was a quasi-experimental study conducted at the department of psychiatry and dialysis unit of a tertiary hospital. Patients undergoing MHD underwent screening to rule out delirium, using the Confusion Assessment Method prior to EF testing. The tests of EF used were the Trail-Making Test—Part B (TMT-B) and Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), both of which were administered before and after a session of HD. Statistical tests used were Wilcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test, paired t-test, single sample t-test, and correlation analyses. Results The mean time taken on TMT-B before HD was 195.36 seconds and after HD, 171.1 seconds; difference is significant (p = 0.0001). The mean FAB score was 13.19 before HD and 14.83 after HD; the difference is significant (p < 0.0001). Significant differences were observed on similarities (p = 0.003), lexical fluency (p = 0.02), and go–no go (p = 0.003) subtests of FAB. Mean TMT-B scores before and after HD differed significantly from that of a reference study (reference TMT-B 150.69 seconds), p = 0.0002 and 0.04, respectively. Conclusion We conclude that patients with CKD on MHD, in general, have worse executive cognitive functioning compared with healthy populations. A session of HD results in significant improvement in these functions.

Context Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) is associated with scapular dyskinesis, or imbalanced scapular muscle activity. Evidence has shown that feedback can improve scapular control in patients with SIS. However, it is unknown whether real-time video feedback or electromyography (EMG) biofeedback is optimal for improving scapular kinematics and muscle activity during a functional task. Objective To compare the effects of video and EMG feedback sessions on absolute muscle activity (upper trapezius [UT], lower trapezius [LT], serratus anterior), muscle balance ratios (UT/LT, UT/serratus anterior), and scapular kinematics (anterior-posterior tilt, external-internal rotation, upward rotation) in SIS participants during arm elevation and lowering. Design Randomized controlled clinical trial. Setting Research laboratory. Patients or Other Participants Overhead athletes who were diagnosed with SIS and who also exhibited scapular dyskinesis (N = 41). Main Outcome Measure(s) Three-dimensional kinematics and EMG were recorded before and after feedback training. Results Lower trapezius muscle activity increased (4.2%–18%, P < .011) and UT/LT decreased (0.56–1.17, P < .013) in the EMG biofeedback training group as compared with those in the video feedback training group. Scapular upward rotation during arm elevation was higher in the video group than in the EMG group after feedback training (2.3°, P = .024). Conclusions The EMG biofeedback improved muscle control and video feedback improved the correction of scapular upward rotation in patients with SIS. Microsurgery is the treatment of choice for cerebellar arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Nevertheless, endovascular therapy aims to be an effective treatment since the introduction of new embolic agents. Cerebellar AVMs represent a subgroup of vascular lesions with a high rate of hemorrhagic presentation compared with their cerebral counterpart. Moreover, they have a higher incidence of flow-related aneurysms when diagnosed. With this in mind, prompt treatment must be performed to avoid rebleeding with devastating consequences. Herein, we present the case of an unruptured cerebellar AVM treated with precipitating hydrophobic injectable liquid (PHIL) with complete obliteration.

In awake liposuction surgery, the extent of surgery that can be performed in a single session is limited to the toxic threshold levels of the anesthetic. Today, lidocaine is the most commonly used anesthetic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical safety of a combined prilocaine-lidocaine tumescent solution, and to compare its efficacy and safety to patients receiving lidocaine only. In this cross-sectional study, the efficacy and the occurrence of clinical side effects of a prilocaine-lidocaine tumescent solution were compared with a standard solution containing lidocaine only. All patients received the same dose of prilocaine-lidocaine (n = 142) and of lidocaine (n = 142), respectively. Both tumescent solutions provided similar and effective local anesthesia during lipoaspiration. There were significantly more early signs of toxicity (nausea, irritation, light-headedness, and tachycardia) in patients receiving the standard lidocaine solution. A tumescent solution containing both lidocaine and prilocaine reduces the occurrence of early signs of toxicity of 1 or both anesthetics. It is a safe solution, provided the surgeon has extensive knowledge of potential adverse effects, and the guidelines of care for liposuction are strictly followed.

Objectives This study profiled the 24 h neuromuscular, endocrine and mood responses to a single versus a double training day in soccer players. Design Repeated measures. Methods Twelve semi-professional soccer players performed small-sided-games (SSG’s; 4 vs 4 + goalkeepers; 6 × 7-min, 2-min inter-set recovery) with neuromuscular (peak-power output, PPO; jump height, JH), endocrine (salivary testosterone, cortisol), and mood measures collected before (pre) and after (0 h, +24 h). The following week, the same SSG protocol was performed with an additional lower body strength training session (back-squat, Romanian deadlift, barbell hip thrust; 4 × 4 repetitions, 4-min inter-set recovery; 85% 1 rep-max) added at 2 h after the SSG’s. Results Between-trial comparisons revealed possible to likely small impairments in PPO (2.5 ± 2.2 W kg−1; 90% Confidence Limits: ±2.2 W kg−1), JH (−1.3; ±2.0 cm) and mood (4.6; ±6.1 AU) in response to the double versus single sessions at +24 h. Likely to very likely small favourable responses occurred following the single session for testosterone (−15.2; ±6.1 pg ml−1), cortisol (0.072; ±0.034 ug dl−1) and testosterone/cortisol ratio (−96.6; ±36.7 AU) at +24 h compared to the double session trial. Conclusions These data highlight that performance of two training sessions within a day resulted in possible to very likely small impairments of neuromuscular performance, mood score and endocrine markers at +24 h relative to a single training session day. A strategy of alternating high intensity explosive training days containing multiple sessions with days emphasising submaximal technical/tactical activities may be beneficial for those responsible for the design and delivery of soccer training programs.

BACKGROUND Preoperative education aids in reducing the incidence of poor outcomes after total knee replacement (TKR) and increasing patient readiness for discharge home but is not well described in the literature. PURPOSE The purpose of the study is to describe the current design of preoperative education for TKR across the United States. METHODS A large, national sample of orthopaedic nurses completed an online survey to describe preoperative education at their facilities. RESULTS Most participants provided preoperative education as part of interprofessional teams in either a group format or combined group and individual education. Verbal instruction was the most common educational delivery method, followed by written instruction. Education typically lasted between 1 and 1.5 hours, was delivered in a single session, and included a variety of topics. CONCLUSION Results of this study describe preoperative educational practices and can support future research to improve patient outcomes following TKR surgery.

The endodontic treatment aims to heal the periapical tissues after the elimination of infected remains of the root canals systems, providing function to the tooth in oral environment. However, the prevalence of failure in these treatments becomes common, occasioning discomfort to the patient, due to the emergence of extensive lesions in the periodontium and painful symptomatology, consequently. In this way, the endodontic should plan comprehensively, analyzing all the diagnostic possibilities, treatment and prognostic. Basing on this, this study aims to report a case, about these perspectives, in what an extensive lesion in the periapex, of low predictability, regressed one year after conventional endodontic treatment in a single session. For this treatment we opted for radiographic methods and computerized tomography for diagnostic and control of the lesion. Therefore, basing on the therapeutic success of this case, it was verified that a precise diagnostic with an indicated endodontic treatment, can avoid an unnecessary surgical intervention and enable a favorable prognostic long-therm.

Purpose To compare the effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for benign thyroid nodules (BTNs) among groups presenting with different nodule volumes. Materials and methods This retrospective study evaluated 186 patients with BTNs who underwent ultrasound guided RFA treatment. The BTNs were categorized into small (≤10 ml); medium (10-30 ml); and large (>30 ml) according to the initial volume of BTNs before ablation. The RFA procedures were performed using the moving shot technique. The volume reduction ratio (VRR) of each nodule, cosmetic score, symptomatic score, and complications were analyzed at 1, 3, and 6 months after RFA treatment and the three groups compared. Results At 1-month follow-up, the large nodules group showed significantly greater VRR compared to the other two groups (small, 31.88% ± 37.91; medium, 38.9% ± 19.18; large, 48.7% ± 20.43, p = .03). At 6-month follow-up, there was no significant difference of VRR among the three groups (small, 74.6% ± 20.92; medium, 68.1% ± 17.07; large, 75.0% ± 11.88). The most common presented complication was temporary vocal palsy (6 patients; small, n = 1; medium, n = 1; large, n = 3). Additionally, one skin burn, one hematoma, and one nodular rupture of BTNs occurred after the procedures. The complication rate of the large nodules group was highest among the three groups and showed a considerable difference (8 patients; small, n = 1, 2.1%; medium, n = 2, 4.5%; large, n = 5, 11.4%, p = .061). Conclusions RFA was confirmed as effective in patients with large thyroid nodule (>30ml), with therapeutic efficacy similar to patients with smaller thyroid nodules.

There are few trials published on treatment in elderly women with low-risk breast cancer. Although the clinical behavior is like younger patients, there is a tendency to undertreat them, which may lead to an increase in the risk of local relapses and decrease their survival. The local recurrences omitting adjuvant treatment (tamoxifen or radiotherapy) after breast conserving surgery (BCS) even in low-risk patients is high, reaching up 20%, which is unacceptable. Although tamoxifen and radiotherapy seem to have a similar effect in reducing local recurrence with equal overall survival, the combination of both achieves the maximum benefit with local relapses of less than 2%. In recent years two studies have been published and were designed specifically for elderly patients. The CALGB 9343 and the PRIME II trials recommend omitting radiotherapy in patients with low-risk tumors treated with BCS and tamoxifen based on a similar survival, but with an increase in local relapses when radiotherapy is omitted, 10% at 10 years vs. 2%. There is no basis to ensure that a treatment with tamoxifen has less toxicity in this group of patients who are usually poly-treated, and it seems that treatment compliance is much lower than expected. The decrease in the number of sessions in external radiotherapy with hypofractionation and accelerate partial breast irradiation, especially intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) with a single session, makes this recommendation very controversial. Elderly patients may benefit from radiation therapy after BCS.

AIM The present study aimed to investigate the total number of visits required to conclude root canal treatments (RCTs) as well as the motivations associated to the choice of dentists practicing in low-income areas of Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 3,103 questionnaires were electronically and individually delivered to professionals of Salvador, Sergipe, and Alagoas (Brazil). The questionnaire encompassed sociodemographic data and questions regarding the number of sessions required to conclude RCT. Also, postoperative pain, professional qualification, the use of technological resources, and time for one-visit treatment were evaluated. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Poisson regression analyses (p < 0.05). RESULTS A total of 326 responses were obtained with higher prevalence of specialists in the field of endodontics (36.8%). Dentists reported greater preference for rotary instrumentation (Alagoas 54.6%, Aracaju 62.1%, and Salvador 83.5%), and most of the participants reported multiple visits to treat root canals with the necrotic pulp tissue associated or not to periapical radiolucency, excluding Salvador (53.8%). Dentists who graduated in public dental schools were less likely to perform RCT of necrotic teeth with periapical lesion in one clinical appointment (p = 0.034). The single-session therapy was positively associated to continuing education attendance (p = 0.004) and to the occurrence of clinical complications (p < 0.001). Dentists who graduated in lato sensu programs were more likely to conclude RCT in less than 60 minutes (p < 0.001), although the occurrence of postoperative pain was more likely observed upon this scenario (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Despite the social inequalities in the analyzed area, professionals have been seeking for knowledge by means of continuing education programs and the implementation of technological resources in their clinical routine, although this fact has poorly influenced the acceleration of RCT. Clinical significances: The total number of visits to conclude endodontic treatment may be influenced by both professional and biological parameters such as the attendance to postgraduation programs and the use of technology as well as to the biological condition of the pulp and the occurrence of postoperative complications.

This randomized trial compared the effects of imagery rescripting against in vivo exposure administered separately during a single session with 27 socially anxious individuals. Previous research shows that imagery rescripting is a promising treatment technique for various disorders including social anxiety, although imagery rescripting and exposure for social anxiety have not yet been compared. Social anxiety self-report measures (LSAS-SR and BFNE-II); the distress, vividness, and frequency of fear images (i.e., Imagery condition); and the levels of anxiety, avoidance, and the strength of convictions of a feared social situation (i.e., exposure condition) were rated at baseline, before treatment, and after a 2- and 4-week follow up period. Both treatment groups improved significantly on all measures pre- to post treatment and the effects largely remained at the 4-week follow-up. No significant differences between the treatment groups were found on the anxiety measures. The results suggest that either a single session of imagery rescripting or of exposure are effective in reducing social anxiety, and that both treatment techniques, even when administered in a single session, reduces social anxiety.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of training in improvement of balance control in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Older adults (mean age 78) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and cognitively intact older adults (mean age 72) were exposed to self-initiated perturbations while performing bilateral shoulder flexion task before and after a single training session consisting of throwing a medicine ball. EMG activity of six trunk and lower limb muscles was recorded. Muscle onsets, integrals of EMG, and muscle co-contraction (C) and reciprocal (R) activation indices were calculated and analyzed during the anticipatory and compensatory phases of postural control. Anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) were observed in both groups. Individuals with MCI, as compared to controls, had higher level of co-contraction of muscles. The training resulted in enhancement of the generation of APAs in individuals with MCI seen as earlier onset of leg and trunk muscle activity prior to the bilateral arm flexion task. While smaller co-contraction of muscles post-training was seen in both the groups, the effect of a single training session was significant in control subjects only. The outcome of the exploratory study suggests that perturbation-based training could be used to improve balance control in older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment.

Empathy scores have been found to decline over the years spent in medical school. The authors aimed to evaluate the change in empathy levels in medical students following a single-session communication skills training. Eighty-two second-year medical students were randomized into intervention and control groups. The intervention comprised of a single-session empathetic communication skills training using PowerPoint, video clips, and roleplay. Empathy was assessed using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Student version (JSE) at baseline, post-intervention (for the intervention group), and at follow up after 3 weeks. The mean JSE score of the intervention group was 109.7 ± 11.8 at baseline, with significant improvement post-intervention (114.2 ± 10.6, p = 0.014). However, the score declined at the 3-week follow-up (106.8 ± 11.8). The mean baseline JSE score of the control group was 107.5 ± 12.4, with a decline at follow-up (101.8 ± 16.0). Though both groups showed a decline in the JSE score at follow-up, the decline was significant only for the control group (p = 0.020), which did not receive the training. The study showed significant improvement immediately, and lower decline at follow-up, in empathy levels following a communication skills training. The findings suggest a need to incorporate a regular training program into the existing medical curriculum, to enhance empathy and prevent its decline over the years.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) involves the focal delivery of large, cytotoxic doses of radiation to small targets within the brain, often located in close proximity to radiosensitive normal tissue structures and requiring very low procedural uncertainties to perform safely. Historically, neurosurgeons considered SRS as a one-time, single session procedure. However therapeutic advances and a better understanding of the clinical response to SRS have caused a renewal of interest in a variety of re-irradiation scenarios; including re-irradiation of the same target after prior SRS, SRS treatments after prior broad-field radiation, hypofractionated treatments, and volume-staged treatments. Re-irradiation may in some cases require even greater effort towards minimizing treatment uncertainties as compared to one-time-only treatments. Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has evolved over time in ways that directly supports many re-irradiation scenarios while helping to minimize overall procedural uncertainty.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is feasible for malignant glioma; however, delivering the optimal radiation dose with sufficient large-volume coverage is a major concern. We aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of fractionated SRS (fSRS) versus single-session SRS (sSRS) for malignant gliomas. We retrospectively reviewed 58 malignant glioma patients who underwent gamma knife SRS from January 2015 to December 2018. Forty-one underwent sSRS, and 17 underwent fSRS. Median dose for fSRS was 28 Gy (range 24–35 Gy), with a median dose of 6 Gy per fraction (range 5–7 Gy). Patients received 4 or 5 fractions on consecutive days. Summary Purpose To evaluate the immediate 24-hour effect on intraocular pressure (IOP) of a single session of micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) in patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG). Patients and methods In this single-center, one-arm, prospective study, patients with PEXG on prostaglandin analogue monotherapy with inadequate IOP control were treated with 360-degree 532 nm MLT. Intraocular pressure was evaluated at 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours after MLT. Twenty-three eyes of eighteen patients (10 male, 8 female) were enrolled in the study. Results The mean age of the patients was 71.83 ± 6.51 years, and the mean IOP prior to MLT was 20.61 ± 1.8 mmHg. The mean IOP was reduced by 2.17 ± 3.31 mmHg, 2.69 ± 3.85 mmHg, 0.87 ± 3.02 mmHg, 2.13 ± 2.8 mmHg and −0.87 ± 3 mmHg at 1, 4, 8 and 24 hours after MLT, respectively. At 4 and 12 hours after MLT, the mean IOP was statistically significantly lower compared to the pre-MLT IOP (P = 0.043 and P = 0.021 respectively). No eye experienced an IOP spike ≥ 5 mmHg during the first 24 hours after MLT. Concusion Treatment with MLT in PEXG eyes did not result in any significant, potentially dangerous IOP spikes during the first 24 hours after MLT.

Background As collaborative team-based healthcare expands, there is a need for effective interprofessional education (IPE). Although the desired outcomes of IPE are defined by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), resources often limit IPE implementation. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a novel interprofessional activity in improving health professions students' interprofessional competencies using team-based learning (TBL). Interprofessional education activity Teams of second year pharmacy and medical students participated in a novel IPE session targeting roles and responsibilities. This activity was designed and implemented by a small number of faculty and used TBL to educate a large number of students using limited resources. Class averages for individual and team readiness assurance test (iRAT/tRAT) scores were collected, and students were invited to complete the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS) to evaluate the effectiveness of the activity. Discussion On average, tRAT scores were 20% higher than iRAT scores. While there was significant improvement for all items on the ICCAS, questions within the roles and responsibilities domain of the ICCAS were most affected. Implications This novel IPE activity was successful in teaching a large group of professional students in the targeted domain of roles and responsibilities in a single session. This activity was a rich experience in which students learned together using limited resources which can be easily replicated at other institutions to help professional students gain proficiency in interprofessional competencies.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of acute resistance training (RT) intensity on motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) generated by transcranial magnetic brain stimulation and on cervicomedullary motor-evoked potentials (CMEPs) produced by electrical stimulation of the corticospinal tract. In four experimental sessions, 14 healthy young men performed 12 sets of eight isometric contractions of the elbow flexors at 0 (Control session), 25, 50, and 75% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Before and after each session, MEPs, CMEPs, and the associated twitch forces were recorded at rest. MEPs increased by 39% ( P < 0.05 versus 25% in the control condition, Effect size (ES) = 1.04 and 1.76, respectively) after the 50% session and by 70% ( P < 0.05 vs. all other conditions, ES = 0.91–2.49) after the 75% session. In contrast, CMEPs increased similarly after the 25%, 50%, and 75% sessions with an overall increase of 27% ( P < 0.05 vs. control condition, ES = 1.34). The amplitude of maximal compound muscle action potentials (Mmax) was unchanged during the experiment. The MEP- and CMEP-associated twitch forces also increased after RT, but training intensity affected only the increases in MEP twitch forces. The data tentatively suggest that the intensity of muscle contraction used in acute bouts of RT affects cortical excitability. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Resistance training (RT) can acutely increase the efficacy of the corticospinal-motoneuronal synapse, motoneuron excitability and motor cortical excitability. We show that motor-evoked potential generated by transcranial magnetic stimulation but not cervicomedullary electrical stimulation increased in proportion to the intensity of training used during a single session of RT. The data suggest that the intensity of muscle contraction used in acute bouts of RT affects cortical excitability.

Background Patients with haematological cancer had considerable symptom burden, in which fatigue was the most prevalent. Almost 70% of haematological cancer patients reported fatigue. Methods We conducted a parallel-group, non-blinded, randomised control trial at the haemato-oncology unit of University Malaya Medical Centre, from 1st October 2019 to 31st May 2020. Patients included were ≥ 18 years, had histopathological diagnosis of haematological cancer, and fatigue score of ≥4 based on the fatigue subscale of Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS). Patients allocated to the intervention group received standard care plus a guided 30-min mindful breathing session, while those in control group received standard care. The study outcomes include fatigue severity according to the fatigue subscale of ESAS, visual analogue scale of 0 – 10, and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Fatigue Scale Version 4, at minute 0 and minute 30. Results Of 197 patients screened, 80 were eligible and they were equally randomised into 30-min mindful breathing versus standard care. Lymphoma (58.9%) was the commonest haematological malignancy, followed by multiple myeloma (13.8%), acute leukaemia (11.3%), myeloproliferative neoplasm (6.3%), chronic leukaemia (5.0%) and myelodysplastic syndrome (5.0%). There was no difference in the demographic and clinical characteristics between the 2 groups. At minute 0, both arms of patients had similar ESAS-fatigue score (median, 5) and FACIT-fatigue score (mean ± SD, 24.7 ± 10.6 for intervention group versus 24.7 ± 9.7 for control group). At minute 30, intervention group had lower ESAS-fatigue score (median, 3 versus 5) and FACIT-fatigue score (mean ± SD, 17.1 ± 10.5 versus 24.8 ± 11.3) compared to control group. Both the ESAS-fatigue score reduction (median, − 2 versus 0, p = 0.002) and FACIT-fatigue score reduction (mean ± SD, − 6.7 versus + 0.8; p Conclusions Our results provide evidence that a single session of 30-min mindful breathing was effective in reducing fatigue in haematological cancer patients. On top of all the currently available methods, 30-min mindful breathing can prove a valuable addition. Trial registration NCT 05029024, date of registration 15th August 2021. BACKGROUND The magnitude and duration of the hypotensive effect of exercise may be influence by the type of exercise performed. The aim of the present study was to compare systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure for 24 hours after a single session of continuous aerobic (CA), interval aerobic (IA), resistance (RE) exercise and control (C), among hypertensive older women under treatment. METHODS The study was conducted on 30 women aged 67.5±5.2 years participating in all sessions applied in random order. After each session, blood pressure was obtained by an oscillometric device and they were submitted to 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. RESULTS Immediately after the sessions, a lower SBP value was observed in groups CA and IA compared to groups C and RE. OBJECTIVE To compare surgical outcomes of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) and retrograde intrarenal surgeries (RIRS) as a result of kidney stones larger than 2 cm, together with Guy's stone scores (GSS). MATERIALS AND METHODS The data of 811 patients with stone sizes 2-6 cm were operated using PNL (n = 361) and RIRS (n = 450) reviewed retrospectively. GSS were graded 1, 2, 3 or 4 according to the computed tomography findings. Stone-free rate (SFR), operation times, length of hospital stay (LOHS) and Clavien complications (CC) were recorded. Background Juvéderm Volite is a skin‐conditioning hyaluronic acid (HA) gel for intradermal injection that provides longer‐lasting effects with a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid. Few studies evaluating its use for aesthetic purposes are available. Aim To examine the use and safety of Juvéderm Volite in daily clinical practice. However, it is unknown whether it is more effective to provide the physical activities before or after PE for PTSD. Therefore, the current study examined the influence of the sequence in which physical activity and PE are applied, on the primary outcome measures of trauma-related distress and vividness. In this quasi-experimental study, a total of 93 patients with PTSD were allocated to two conditions: (1) PE followed by physical activity (N = 50) and (2) physical activity followed by PE (N = 43). The physical activity intervention consisted of a low to moderate intensive outside walk. The reduction in trauma-related distress and vividness from pre-to postna-intervention was significantly stronger in the group that performed physical activity after a single PE session compared to the group performing physical activity prior to the PE session. However, the explorative results with regard to freezing symptoms and emotion regulation problems indicated that both sequence groups showed an equal decrease in symptoms over time. The current findings suggest that the sequence in which physical activity and PE sessions are performed, could matter. A stronger effect on distress and vividness was found when physical activity was added after, instead of before, one PE session. These results could further guide interventions for patients with PTSD by taking sequence into account when combining single physical activity and PE sessions in clinical practice. 7 p.

Background Risk factors for different sports injuries vary between sexes. Deficits in postural stability have been associated with several lower extremity injuries. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in static postural stability between male and female intercollegiate athletes with and without visual information. # Hypothesis There will be no difference in visual reliance between sexes during static postural stability. Study Design Cross-sectional Study Methods Static postural stability was assessed during a single session for football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball intercollegiate athletes (males, n=135, females, n=51) under eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) conditions via performance of single limb stance on a force plate. Ground reaction force component data in all directions were quantified as a unitless composite score (COMP) where lower values indicated better postural stability. The absolute change and percentage change between EO and EC conditions were calculated for each sex. Two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests were used to compare differences between sexes. Results Males had greater EO COMP (males=7.77±3.40; females=6.48±4.61; p=0.038; Cohen’s d=0.343) and EC COMP (males=19.43±8.91; females 14.66±6.65; p=0.001; Cohen’s d=0.571) than females. A significant difference in absolute change from EO to EC was observed between sexes (males=-11.65±7.05; females=-8.18±5.61; p=0.01, Cohen’s d=-0.520) indicating that males had a greater change between conditions for the worse. There was no significant difference in percent change from EO to EC between sexes (males=159.2±90.7; females=156.7±109.2; p=0.39; Cohen’s d=0.026). Conclusions The observed differences between males and females in EO COMP, EC COMP, and absolute difference in COMP indicate that there is some factor that causes a difference in static postural stability between sexes. No difference in percent change between groups indicates that the difference in static postural stability between sexes may not be due to visual reliance. Female athletes may inherently have better postural stability than males, but both sexes were able to compensate for the loss of visual input. Level of Evidence 3
