This study examines sociocultural, pragmatic, and gender differences between native speakers of British English (BritE) and Pakistani English speakers (PakE) in expressing apology responses (ARs). Based on a discourse completion task (DCT) using data from 60 speakers of both cultures, the study focuses on the variations in the use of apology response strategies in three severe and three non-severe situations. The findings show that the two groups use a variety of strategies in expressing apology responses. The majority of BritE speakers tend to use ARs with the relatively strong hearer-oriented strategies (Acceptance). PakE ARs, on the other hand, seem to be dominated by the frequent use of Acknowledgment, with speaker-oriented strategies. These results have proven that both male and female English-using Pakistanis are amazingly obvious and direct in their apology responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article shows the significance of college-going aspiration in the future identities of young girls and the sources of such influence in their worlds. Using the figured worlds theory, the paper analyzes the process and implications of these young girls' college-going aspirations. Drawing on interviews and observations with nineteen young girls living in urban India, the study shows that their response to the normative good girl figure gives them a chance of going to college. Their imagined identity is linked to values and communicative competence, and their figuring shows their investment in their own cultural transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our understanding of multiple goals has been advanced through the lines of research that focus on their pursuit of academic achievement goals and of academic and social goals. These prior efforts, however, are not free from conceptual and methodological limitations. To further advance the field, we put this paper together with two purposes in mind. First, we propose a goal complex model as a new approach to studying the coordination, consequences, and social contexts of pursuing multiple goals. In doing so, we highlight the role of academic goals as the means towards pursuing social goals as the end goals. Second, we proffer a model that explains sociocultural influences on the development of social and academic goals as well as goal complexes. To this end, we highlight the role of parents, teachers, and classmates/peers in promoting students' social and academic goals and in facilitating the formation of goal complexes through these key social agents' influences on the students' goal-related beliefs. Conceptual implications and methodological recommendations for future research on students' multiple goals are discussed. Together, the goal complex approach and the sociocultural model we present in this paper provide the field with directions for future research that seeks to better understand students' pursuit of multiple goals as they navigate complex sociocultural demands in their day-to-day tasks. This study aims to model the welfare of fishermen's households in the coastal area of West Sumatra which is determined by the socio-cultural environment, catches and added value of 373 fishing households with fishing gear by using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The contribution of this research lies in the concept of the socio-cultural environment in improving the welfare of fishermen's households through the catch and added value that has been ignored by previous researchers. The results of the study found that the fisherman household welfare model can be achieved through strengthening added value. This study suggests to the government to increase the added value of fishery products through the added value obtained from the difference between the selling price and the cost of materials or other supplies from fishing activities, fish farming, fish handling, fish processing, and distribution in a production process. Furthermore, this study suggests to further researchers to involve the study of the physical environment such as natural conditions as a determinant of the welfare of fishermen's households. This study applied a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to better understand pharmacy workplace wellbeing and resilience using respondents' written comments along with a blend of the researchers' understanding of the phenomenon and the published literature. Our goal was to apply this understanding to recommendations for the pharmacy workforce and corresponding future research. Data were obtained from the 2021 APhA/NASPA National State-Based Pharmacy Workplace Survey, launched in the United States in April 2021. Promotion of the online survey to pharmacy personnel was accomplished through social media, email, and online periodicals. Responses continued to be received through the end of 2021. A data file containing 6973 responses was downloaded on 7 January 2022 for analysis. Usable responses were from those who wrote an in-depth comment detailing stories and experiences related to pharmacy workplace and resilience. There were 614 respondents who wrote such comments. The findings revealed that business models driven by mechanized assembly line processes, business metrics that supersede patient outcomes, and reduction of pharmacy personnel's professional judgement have contributed to the decline in the experience of providing patient care in today's health systems. The portrait of respondents' lived experiences regarding pharmacy workplace wellbeing and resilience was beyond the individual level and revealed the need for systems change. We propose several areas for expanded inquiry in this domain: (1) shared trauma, (2) professional responsibility and autonomy, (3) learned subjection, (4) moral injury and moral distress, (5) sociocultural effects, and (6) health systems change. By being dependent on one of the most impacted industries, the travel industry, Balinese residents experienced a considerable downturn in their well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aims to examine the extent to which sociocultural, economic and environmental aspects of positive and negative tourism impacts affect the well-being of Balinese residents. Recommendations are made for all tourism and hospitality stakeholders and policymakers. A quantitative research approach has been applied following a descriptive correlational research design. Data were gathered from 442 Balinese locals using an online questionnaire. It revealed that positive impacts of tourism have a significant positive correlation with residents' well-being, whereas negative tourism impacts do not have a convincing effect. The positive sociocultural tourism effect was identified as a positive predictor of Balinese welfare. The research recommends promoting intercultural exchange between tourists and the local community and releasing stricter regulations to reduce the negative sociocultural, economic and environmental impacts of the visitors to Bali. This study takes a sociocultural approach in examining how mathematics professional development facilitators and teachers enacted a professional development program in a statewide network of trainings. Facilitators (N = 11) and teachers (N = 62) were surveyed before and after implementation to capture how facilitators understood and then implemented the program with teachers, and how teachers interpreted and then enacted the program with students. Differences in uptake (intended use) and implementation (actual use) were investigated in two separate analyses that looked for differences (1) across levels of iteration (i.e., from original program to facilitators to teachers) and (2) between groups of teachers who participated in the trainings. Results showed substantial variation across levels and between groups such that, although less true of some groups than others, intention to use the program was higher than actual use. Esta revisión documental sobre lenguaje tiene como propósito explorar la literacidad o prácticas letradas en el contexto rural colombiano y latinoamericano. Se desarrolla una revisión documental de cincuenta artículos publicados en inglés y español en buscadores como Web of Science, Eric, Redalyc, entre otros. Los datos se recopilaron en una matriz documental y como método interpretativo se usó la hermenéutica textual. Se estructura en investigaciones a nivel internacional, latinoamericano y colombiano, además presenta tendencias y horizontes de la literacidad. Se concluyó que la enseñanza del lenguaje en zonas rurales del mundo es integral y se ubica mejor en las prácticas sociales, pero factores económicos, históricos y políticos no permiten que abarque a toda la población.

This study aimed to investigate English as a second language (ESL) undergraduates’ sociocultural perspective of willingness to communicate (WTC) in English inside the classroom in relation to language use outside the classroom. The participants were 440 ESL undergraduates selected through the cluster sampling method from eight universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan. The data were collected through questionnaires on WTC in English inside the classroom and language use outside the classroom. The findings revealed that the participants’ level of WTC in English was high for most social interactions within the classroom, such as in groups, during activities, with the same gender, and when given preparation time in groups. The findings for language use showed that a mixture of languages, such as Pashto and Urdu, was predominantly used in the family, neighbourhood and friendship, religion, education, and transaction domains. In contrast, English was primarily used in the mass media and social media domains. Moreover, the findings revealed that WTC in English inside the classroom was positively correlated with social media, mass media, transaction and education domains but negatively correlated with the family domain.

The modern woman has taken her rightful place in society as a worker, a caregiver, a mother, and a world citizen. However, along with the privileges of these roles comes the great cost of stress and resultant exhaustion and fatigue. Psychosocial, physical, cultural, and disease-related realms of stress act as strands of a web that serve to bind and hinder women with chronic stress. New areas of research, such as exercise intervention, improved social programs (e.g., childcare), and supplementation are constantly evaluated for effectiveness alongside traditional remedies such as exercise. This review will highlight some of the key issues regarding stress in women and explore reports of new treatment modalities in light of the specific requirements of the modern woman.

Background: Patients ascribe diverse meanings to postoperative pain (POP), usually based on personal beliefs. However, patients’ perceptions about the causes of pain are usually influenced by their traditional beliefs and misconceptions, and cultural factors such as ethnic background serve as barriers to effective pain control. The study sought to explore the cognitive and sociocultural aspects of postoperative pain experience after urological surgeries. Methods: The study employed exploratory descriptive qualitative research design. Twelve male participants who had undergone urological surgery in a teaching hospital were recruited using purposive sampling. Data were collected through individual face-to-face in-depth interviews, conducted in English and Akan languages. The interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. Ethical considerations such as informed consent, anonymity, and confidentiality were ensured. Concurrent data analysis was done engaging the processes of content analysis. Findings: Cognitive aspects of the POP revealed three themes; the knowledge of the pain, attitude, and beliefs of the patients, and meanings the patients ascribed to the pain. Similarly, sociocultural aspects revealed two emerging themes; the family dynamics and roles influencing pain experience, and individual cultural background and belief systems. The participants’ diverse views and experiences influenced their pain expression and experience after urological surgery. Conclusions: Postoperative pain is a multidimensional experience and includes socio-cultural and cognitive aspects. Therefore, contemporary pain management strategies should focus on client-centered and culturally sensitive interventions.

The pervasiveness of gender-based violence (GBV) against women and children constitutes the most severe expression of discrimination and dehumanisation of women and children in South Africa. Even before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic came, domestic violence was already one of the greatest human rights violations. Women for centuries suffered different forms of violation and continue to struggle in subtle forms in the 21st century. This article investigates the sociocultural theories, narrative reflections and COVID-19 pandemic challenges associated with the prevalence of GBV in South Africa. The article argues that patriarchal culture, religion, gender norms, lockdown and violence in South Africa perpetuate gender-based abuse. Therefore, the article unfolds this research through a literature review and narrative approach which is used to allow the co-researchers to share their stories. The article embarks on sociocultural experiences, the scourge of GBV in South Africa, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, qualitative interviews and theological reflections and concludes by suggesting future possibilities to fight GBV. Contribution: This article contributes to an understanding that abafazi nabantwana baphefumla ngenxeba [women and children are breathing through the wound] amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. It discusses the prevalence of GBV, the intersection of religious cultural effects, social sciences, gender inequality and the continued oppression of women and children.

Although many municipalities have climate action plans with targets and goals, effective climate action still faces significant implementation gaps. Implementation can falter due to barriers for the deployment of low-carbon solutions, as well as the lack of 'cultural, systemic, and psychological support' for such solutions. Cultural drivers and perceptions shape citizens’ behaviors and can perpetuate carbon-intensive lifestyles. This paper focuses on measures in climate action planning in the Metro Vancouver region of Canada regarding transportation, which remains the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions and has a low chance of reaching its emissions-reductions targets. Shifting towards greater sustainability will entail a challenge of transformative change, involving shifts in systems, behaviors, worldviews, and cultures. In implementation, the full complexity of the climate action challenge becomes most evident. A scoping review of climate action documentation and semi-structured interviews are used to examine (1) barriers to effective implementation, (2) socio-cultural perceptions and approaches to public engagement and (3) novel areas for transformational action. The study found a need to reweight the focus of climate action, which is predominantly set on techno-managerial efforts, also to include communication, narratives and broader systems change, which are the key barriers to low-carbon urban mobility. 'Practice relevance' Transportation remains a significant source of greenhouse gases and air pollutants in urban areas. To effectively shrink emissions, novel approaches are needed that go beyond technical fixes and view climate action as a challenge of transformative change. This study identifies the dominance of (1) 'practical', techno-managerial solutions, yet notes an inadequate focus brought to (2) the 'political' restructuring of systems and developmental trajectories pertaining to mobility and (3) thepersonal aspects of social perceptions and culture. Recommendations are made about how to better account for the deeper human dimensions that present persistent barriers to climate action in transportation by reweighting the focus to include the personal and political spheres of transformation.

El estudio de la segregación residencial étnica en México está continuamente relacionado a variables socioeconómicas; sin embargo, también existe robustez en cifras de Censos de Población y Vivienda desde 1990 hasta 2020 sobre indicadores socioculturales relacionados a la religión, natalidad, situación escolar, migración o alimentación. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo ampliar y diversificar esfuerzos para comprender el fenómeno en México a través de su relación con indicadores tanto socioeconómicos como socioculturales; por lo que, se analizó la correlación entre etnicidad y (i) religión, (ii) situación escolar, (iii) ocupación y (iv) migración. Seleccionando como caso de estudio la ciudad de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, por sus características de composición social y étnica; se midió la segregación residencial a nivel AGEB con datos provenientes del Censo de Población y Vivienda 2020 aplicando el índice de disimilaridad e índice Delta. Finalmente, los valores obtenidos fueron correlacionados a través del coeficiente de Pearson. Los resultados apuntan que las variables etnicidad y religión tendrán mayor fuerza de relación entre sí; seguidas de cerca por la fuerza de relación entre etnicidad y situación escolar; es decir, se observó una mayor relación con la segregación residencial de tipo sociocultural que con la de tipo socioeconómico.

In this study we explore the elements that integrate the profiles of university graduates in Peru of the audiovisual communication career and the implications of the sociocultural context in their graduate research. The objective is to identify the profiles of university graduates and the implications of the sociocultural context during the development of the process. With qualitative methodology, the interpretative paradigm model and using the semi-structured interview technique, we identify their perceptions. The conclusions remark that the elements that integrate these profiles have particularities that must be considered when entering the labor market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Data on sociocultural determinants of late antenatal care initiation during pregnancy are scarce. This study evaluated pregnant women living in Tolon and the sociocultural factors that influence antenatal care initiation. Methods: This study was cross-sectional. The odds of late antenatal care initiation were determined using binary logistic regression models and qualitative data were presented as illustrative quotations. Results: The prevalence of late antenatal care initiation was high (72%). A woman and her spouse's education were both found to impact antenatal care initiation, with formal education making early initiation more likely (P<0.001), although spouse's education was not significant in the adjusted model. In both the unadjusted and adjusted models, women who experienced pregnancy 'outdooring' rites to announce their pregnancy were more likely to initiate antenatal care late than those who did not (P<0.001). Conclusions: There was a positive relationship between pregnancy rites and late antenatal care initiation. The district health directorate needs to intensify campaigns against traditional pregnancy rituals that negatively impact early antenatal care initiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Problem: Although relevant to some leaders, existing leadership theories and frameworks lack sociocultural support for Black women leaders. Furthermore, despite its roots in developing people, the field of human resource development (HRD) has historically taken a hegemonic approach that does not support the leadership development of Black women. Current research in the field is limited in its application of sociocultural perspectives of leadership that explain the dilemmas of Black women leaders. This is a critical deficiency that is exacerbated in times of crises. The Solution: We examine the practical application of traditional theories such as transformational and servant leadership in relation to the social identity of Black women leaders. We propose a conceptual development framework that considers the foundations of transformational and servant leadership but applies a sociocultural lens that better aligns with the needs of the Black women leaders. We further conclude that sociocultural frameworks are needed within leadership development programs to support Black women leaders. Background and Objectives: Though many studies have examined the service utilization of dementia caregivers, there is limited empirical evidence from Asian Americans in this field. Guided by Andersen's behavioral model of health services use, we aimed to understand what factors were associated with utilizing multiple types of services among Chinese American dementia caregivers. Research Design and Methods: We collected survey data from 134 Chinese dementia caregivers in New York City. Logistic regression models were conducted to test the associations between predisposing, enabling, and need factors and the likelihood of using tangible (home health aide, adult daycare, respite care), educational (lectures and workshops), and psychological (peer support groups and psychological counseling) support services. Results: Several variables conceptualized by Andersen's model, including caregiver's knowledge about services, caring tasks, length of care and burden, and care recipient's physical and cognitive deteriorations, were significantly associated with higher possibilities of using multiple types of services. Three sociocultural factors—residing in Chinatown, availability of alternative family caregivers, and diagnosis of cognitive deterioration—were also associated with higher likelihood of using educational or psychological services. Discussion and Implications: The findings extend the existing literature on service utilization of caregivers by highlighting the importance of distinguishing types of services and considering sociocultural factors in future research and practice. Objective: The Australian headspace model has been proposed as an internationally significant exemplar for reducing the mental health 'treatment gap' amongst young people around the world. We provide a commentary that discusses the conceptualisation and delivery of headspace services within Australia, a predominantly Westernised, Educated, Industrialised, Rich and Democratic (WEIRD) society, as well as examining accessibility and suitability for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. Conclusion: headspace was conceptualised, designed, implemented and evaluated according in a WEIRD sociocultural context, and is therefore most applicable to that setting. Australia also has CALD communities, who have not seemed to access headspace in the reported patient and staff demographics. On this basis, there may be questions about the potential generalisability of headspace models outside WEIRD societies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the sociocultural character of place names with dendronymic components. It argues that place names,being elements of language, with dendronymic components have cultural, social and ethnological value, related to Celtic andGermanic traditions, which evolved in Anglo-Saxon times and took hold later. The article discusses cultural, social andhistorical factors of using the dendronyms oak, thorn, birch, willow, yew, elm, tree, beam in British place names. As theproduct of the development of natural environment by man, the tree was integrated into man’s social and economic relations,thus acquiring cultural and religious value in a particular ethnic and historical social group.

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo mostrar la actitud sociocultural de los estudiantes universitarios sobre el confinamiento por el COVID-19 en la Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú. Tiene un enfoque de investigación cuantitativa y la unidad de análisis son los estudiantes de pregrado de la UNCP, donde se aplicó 292 cuestionarios usando la escala de Likert. Concluyéndose que la actitud sociocultural de los estudiantes universitarios de la UNCP muestra una distribución equitativa entre actitud negativa e indiferente frente a los peligros de la pandemia y el confinamiento.

La esencia del proceso de enseñanza – aprendizaje de las normas en el ámbito escolar, radica en la adecuada formación de hablantes cultos y competentes lingüísticamente, siempre teniendo en cuenta que los estudiantes, aun cuando provienen de familias donde se emplee la norma culta, se comunican a partir de lo estigmatizado como popular o estándar, por lo que no han alcanzado la nivelación y desarrollo lingüístico que solo la escuela, como nuevo medio de socialización, puede proporcionarle. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el estado actual del proceso de enseñanza – aprendizaje de las normas gramaticales en el preuniversitario y su vinculación con el enfoque cognitivo, comunicativo y sociocultural; para ello se hace una periodización de la enseñanza de la gramática, su vinculación al enfoque discursivo – funcional y se ofrecen algunas herramientas didácticas y metodológicas para el perfeccionamiento de dicho proceso. El dominio adecuado de la norma culta por parte de los estudiantes exige un trabajo sistemático por parte de los docentes, la familia y otros agentes culturales, a lo largo de su vida escolar, lo que le abre el camino al arte, la ciencia y de forma general a la cultura.

The current study is based on Travis Hirschi’s social bond theory, arguing that the debut of delinquent behavior is a result of the weakening of the ties that bind people to society. According to Hirschi’s social bond theory, all youth have the potential to commit delinquent behaviors, but they are kept under control by their relationships with friends, parents, neighbors, teachers, and employers. These factors could serve as protective factors from involvement in crimes. Most studies of social bond theory have been conducted in Western countries among male adolescents using quantitative methods, including cross-cultural approaches. However, the ability of social bond theory to explain youth involvement in delinquency in non-Western cultures, especially conservative and authoritarian cultures such as the Arab one, has not been widely examined. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring youth involvement in delinquency using qualitative research on Palestinian-Arab youth in Israel. Addressing youth delinquency within the unique sociocultural, economic, and political situation of the Arab minority in Israel will help us examine the theory’s applicability to the explanation of deviant behavior in a variety of contexts.

Despite overall improvements observed at the national level, there is a significant disparity in childhood vaccination coverage rates between urban and rural regions, particularly within tribal and remote areas in Pakistan. Our study aimed to explore the views of community/tribal leaders concerning barriers and their local solutions for improving vaccine uptake, with a specific focus on remote settings. An exploratory qualitative research study was conducted from July to September 2019 in Shikarpur, Sindh, Pakistan. We interviewed 11 community leaders, after developing a semi-structured interview guide based on the health belief model. Following validation, the collected data was transcribed and subsequently translated into the English language. A stepwise process of manual familiarization, coding, theme generation, and theme review using an inductive approach was followed. While most of the rural community leaders expressed a willingness to support vaccinations, numerous unexplored barriers were identified. These barriers included an unsustainable communication system heavily dependent on polio mobile teams, discourteous behavior of healthcare personnel, cultural restrictions that limited women’s involvement, economic hardships, limited transportation options, insufficient collaboration with the education sector, poor knowledge among community leaders, and security concerns. Additionally, they proposed some innovative solutions of information dissemination methods through the Ottaque system, ethics-based training, subsidized transportation services or voucher system, and addressing security concerns in collaboration with community leaders. Our findings suggest policymakers take both community leaders and members for an inclusive policy-making process to redraft the special policy for these remote and rural areas. Conversion disorder is a common problem, with varied presentation, with which children present to tertiary care centers in India. Currently, reports regarding psychogenic nonepileptic seizure (PNES) in children who face sociocultural stressors are lacking. The present case report shows how PNES can result from psychological distress caused by sociocultural factors, such as preference for male children and gender-based inequality. The case report underscores the need to promote more gender egalitarian attitudes to dispel deep-rooted cultural preferences for sons as these are related to perpetuating and precipitating stress and unhealthy behaviors among the female gender.

Background: Gender shapes household decision-making and access for nutritious diets, including animal source foods (ASFs) that impact on child health and nutrition status. However, research shows that the poorest households in the urban informal settlements of Nairobi have low ASFs consumption. This study was conducted to explore further from a qualitative perspective the gender, sociocultural factors affecting household ASF consumption this study.Methods: To explore further on the topic of study, an exploratory qualitative study was carried out to establish the factors that influence access, allocation and consumption of animal source foods (ASFs) by households in urban informal settings of Nairobi. Nineteen focus group discussions with men and women were conducted to enable in-depth exploration of ASFs consumption.Results: Gender influences decision-making of household ASFs dietary intake. Gendered power dynamics prevail with men as breadwinners and household heads often determining the food access and consumption of ASFs. Women are increasingly accessing short-term waged-based incomes in urban informal settings and now play a role in food and nutrition security for their households. This enforces the idea that women's decision-making autonomy is an important aspect of women empowerment, as it relates to women's dietary diversity and subsequently, better household nutritional status. As evidenced in this study, if a woman has bargaining power based on accessing incomes to support their household food needs, she will not jeopardize food security. The mobile digital money platform was key in enabling access to resources to access food. Use of trust to access food on credit and purchasing smaller packaged quantities of food were also enablers to access of food/ASFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of residential segregation by ethnicity in Latin America and Mexico is continuously related to socioeconomic and class variables; however, we have found robustness on data related to religion, birth rate, educational status, occupation, income, migration or feeding in the Population and Housing Censuses from 1990 to 2020. This research aims to broaden and diversify efforts to understand ethnic residential segregation in Mexico and its relation to socioeconomic and sociocultural indicators; therefore, the correlation between ethnicity and religion, educational status, occupation and migration was analyzed. The city of San Cristobal de Las Casas was chosen as a case study due to its characteristics of social and ethnic composition; residential segregation at the AGEB level was measured with data from the 2020 Population and Housing Census based on the calculation of dissimilarity index and Delta index. Finally, the results were correlated through the Pearson coefficient. The results point out that the ethnicity and religion variables have a stronger relation with each other; closely followed by the strength of the relation between variables of ethnicity and educational status. Therefore, the evidence indicates that residential segregation by ethnicity is more closely related to sociocultural residential segregation than to socioeconomic residential segregation. This documentary review on language aims to explore literacy or literate practices in the Colombian and Latin American rural contexts. A documentary review of fifty articles published in English and Spanish in search engines such as Web of Science, Eric, and Redalyc, among others, is developed. The data was collected in a documentary matrix and textual hermeneutics was used as an interpretive method. It is structured in research at the international, Latin American, and Colombian levels, it also presents trends and horizons of literacy. It was concluded that language teaching in rural areas of the world is comprehensive and is better located in social practices, but economic, historical, and political factors do not allow it to cover the entire population. The education system in the 21st century has focused on innovation as a tool that revamps the traditional educational system. The need for quality improvement in the curriculum and the desire to produce students with 21st-century competency skills have made innovation the core emphasis in the educational context. Hence, school cultures that support innovation should be developed and encouraged extensively. However, studies on innovation cultures within the educational context are still scarce. Researchers have also yet to concur on universally agreed features of innovation cultures within education settings. Thus, this systematic literature review has been carried out to identify the norms, beliefs, values, customs and behaviours shared in educational innovation cultures. From a total of 156 studies analysed, this article reviewed 28 most relevant studies within three categories, which were organizational cultures, sociocultural norms and national cultures. Seven studies discussed involved organizational cultures, while 20 studies focused on sociocultural norms. Only one study explored national cultures. The Competing Value Framework, six building blocks of 'Innovation Quotient', the theory of innovation culture, the innovation-oriented culture as well as employee skills and competence had been used to explain the innovation cultures within an organization. The themes that emerged in sociocultural norms were the individual personality, interaction, collaboration and teamwork, support as well as leadership of a teacher. Using perspectives on language and language learning in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), including the traditional cognitive orientation, sociocultural theory orientation, and critical theoretical orientation as theoretical frameworks, this study critically analyzes 78 papers published from 2014 to 2020 in Chinese as a Second Language-The Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CSL), a leading journal that is devoted exclusively to the study of Chinese language, culture, and pedagogy. This study investigates how the teaching and learning of Chinese language and culture has been conceptualized and enacted in the field of SLA and explores factors that contributed to frustration, dissatisfaction, or criticisms in this field (e.g., Lantolf and Genung, 2002; Li and Duff, 2008, 2018; Thorne, 2005). Additionally, this study raises awareness of the value of sociocultural and critical perspectives on language teaching and learning (e.g., Douglas Fir Group, 2016; Fairclough, 1992; Halliday and Hasan, 1985; New London Group, 1996; Vygotsky, 1978), suggesting more critical and sociocultural-oriented research to support learning Chinese as a world language in the context of globalization. Background: The practice of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is widely defined as a method of skin-to-skin contact that occurs between the mother and baby. This harmony and contact will reduce the mortality and morbidity among newborns and more specifically the preterm babies. Objectives: This research paper tends to examine the nurse-related factors as barriers of Kangaroo Mother Care as they may hinder the implementation of KMC as a practice . Methodology: Cross sectional design was followed to conduct a quantitative research by depending on questionnaires. Around 76 cases were collected in Rania Pediatric and Maternity hospital. The data was analyzed with SPSS software. Results: The results show that there is a statistically significant negative relationship lack of experience and knowledge and kangaroo mother care, also there is a significant and negative association between special seats and attire with KMC implementation, however the relationship between time and tendency and KMC implementation is not statistically significant. Conclusion: Kangaroo mother care as an effective way of baby care has been implemented worldwide, however several barriers face the implementation of the practice. BACKGROUND: The Southern part of Nigeria, where Delta State's Central Senatorial District lies, has continued to record low levels of family planning (FP) service uptake despite their high level of awareness. This situation has led to poor health outcomes amongst women, children and the general population. Thus, poor progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 which aims to ensure healthy lives and promotes well-being for all at all ages, with specific targets related to promoting family planning services. AIM: This study aims to assess the level of awareness of FP uptake, the socioeconomic and sociocultural predictors of FP uptake and the major barriers influencing the uptake of FP services in the Central Senatorial District of Delta State. METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional descriptive design. Multistage sampling method was used to obtain a sample of 407 respondents drawn from females of reproductive age in suburban and rural communities. Data were collected through a researcher-administered questionnaire and analysed using SPSS version 26. Chi-square test was used to determine significant associations, and logistic regression analysis was used to determine the predictors. RESULTS: Findings from this study revealed that awareness about FP amongst females was high (69.3%), but only two-fifths (42.3%) were using FP. The socioeconomic predictors of FP uptake were marital status (P = 0.004) and the type of community lived in (P = 0.010). The sociocultural predictors of FP uptake were spousal approval (P = 0.02), social groups' approval (P = 0.053), belief in the effect of curses (P = 0.001), prayers (P = 0.016) and traditional practises (P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: This study revealed high awareness about FP but low uptake amongst females of reproductive age due to identified socioeconomic and sociocultural factors. Therefore, the local and state governments should increase health education and promotion in rural areas to improve health knowledge. Furthermore, non-governmental organisations associated with reproductive health should extend their programmes into rural areas and promote the creation of more FP advocacy social groups, to channel FP messages to the communities. Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the world as a terminal disease, different lexical items have been adopted by Nigerian News Editors in rendering news reports on the pandemic. Certainly, power and significance are embedded in these news reports and these headlines help to reveal hidden sociocultural ideologies. Thus, the present study investigates selected Covid-19 newspaper headlines in order to ascertain how newspaper headlines have been used to illuminate hidden sociocultural ideologies. The study adopts Fairclough's (1995) theory of Critical Discourse Analysis as a sociocultural practice where emphasis is made on the three dimensions (3Ds) of discourse analysis namely description, interpretation and explanation. Covid-19 newspaper headlines selected from five Nigerian Newspapers namely the Guardian, Daily Trust, Nation, Tribune and Punch newspapers are analysed thematically in a bid to ascertain how the choice of words by the editors have been used to reveal hidden ideologies. A critical analysis of the headlines reveals a covert underlying social and cultural motivation for the readers' consumption. The study further shows that covid-19 newspaper headlines perform myriads of functions from the perspective of the readers as they have implications on the social, political, economic and religious life of the readers. Background: African American or Black young men who have sex with men (BYMSM) are at a disproportionate risk for contracting HIV and have high rates of undiagnosed, and therefore untreated, HIV infection. In the southern United States, BYMSM face region-specific hurdles to HIV prevention, such as limited access to care and high levels of racism and intersectional stigma, necessitating HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis interventions that address sociocultural and structural barriers while motivating BYMSM to engage in prevention. Brothers Saving Brothers (BSB) is a motivational interviewing behavioral intervention that successfully and simultaneously increased community-based HIV testing and prevention counseling and education among BYMSM in the midwestern United States. Objective: The aim of this protocol is to detail the process for the adaption of the BSB intervention for midwestern BYMSM to the Kings intervention for southern BYMSM. During the adaptation process, the intervention will be modernized to include rapid HIV testing, as opposed to HIV testing that requires BYMSM to return for test results, pre-exposure prophylaxis, and the provision of structural supports, and for relevance in the southern United States. Methods: Aim 1 is to gather qualitative data through focus groups and in-depth interviews with BYMSM aged 18 to 29 years in Alabama and in-depth interviews with prevention and outreach workers who routinely work with BYMSM in Alabama. NVivo qualitative software (QSR International) will be used for the coding and analysis of the transcripts via a thematic analysis approach. For aim 2, intervention mapping will guide the adaptation process, intervention content, components, and design. Both aims 1 and 2 will leverage the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment implementation science framework, with emphasis on the exploration and preparation phases of this model. By applying these frameworks, the original midwestern BSB intervention will be scientifically adapted to the southern BYMSM Kings intervention. Results: This study is ongoing as of 2022 and is expected to conclude in 2024, with aims 1 and 2 being completed in 2023. Qualitative data will offer insight into the current real-world experiences and preferences of BYMSM in Alabama. Feedback will be collected through the adaptation process to inform intervention refinement. Institutional review board approvals have been received. Conclusions: The findings will inform next steps, that is, testing the Kings intervention for feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness in a pilot hybrid type 1 effective-implementation randomized controlled trial. In the Finnish National Core Curriculum for Compulsory Education (2014), the conception of language is based on the communal and functional linguistics model of language. From the perspectives of teaching and learning, this requires that learning contexts and pedagogies enable learning in such learning environments, roles, and processes where the pupil can think and act authentically, according to his or her age (National Core Curriculum 2014). Thus, in this article we examine the integration of subject teaching with topic teaching in the frameworks of sociocultural learning, functional linguistics, and authentic learning, in the contextual-pedagogical learning landscape, where the individuality of learners as well as timely learning support (scaffolding) in the zone of proximal development (Vygotsky 1978) enable the learning of content as part of interdisciplinary learning. The subject Finnish language and literature is defined as a interdisciplinary, practical, theoretical, and cultural subject (National Core Curriculum 2014) that requires cooperation with other subjects. This article will present a interdisciplinary approach to learning, where the thematic context created for learning gives meaning to the subject related content that must be learned, and where the ability to acquire the core content of the subject becomes a prerequisite for the processing of the theme or topic presented through the thematic context. The public health systems of Southeast Asian countries are financially challenged by a comparatively higher incidence of human S. suis infections than other geographical areas. Efforts to improve practices in production settings, including improved meat inspection regulations, prevention of the slaughtering of non-healthy pigs, and enhanced hygiene practices at processing facilities, along with improvements in the pork supply chain, all appear promising for reducing food cross-contamination with S. suis. However, opportunities for intervention at the societal level are also needed to effect changes, as population behaviors such as the consumption of raw pork, blood, and offal products are important contributors to the increased incidence of human S. suis disease in Southeast Asia. A plethora of factors are associated with the consumption of these high-risk dishes, including traditional culture and knowledge, shared beliefs, socio-economic level, and personal attitudes associated with gender and/or marital status. Education and intervention in behavioral attitudes that are sensible to cultural practices and traditions may provide additional means to reduce the burden of S. suis human disease in Southeast Asia.
