This study carries out a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of scientific production on wildfires, soil erosion and land degradation, with the aim of understanding trends, critical gaps in scientific knowledge and research patterns. A total of 1400 articles published between 2001 and 2023 were analyzed with bibliometric tools (Bibliometrix and VOSviewer), revealing a steady growth in the number of publications over time. International collaboration between countries such as the United States, Spain, China and Portugal is evident, highlighting the global approach to tackling these issues, as well as the mobility and collaboration between scientists. Analyzing the conceptual structure through the co-occurrence of keywords reveals central themes such as "soil erosion" and "wildfire", indicating areas of primary focus in research. This study highlights the continuing importance of these themes and the need for global collaboration to tackle the environmental challenges affecting forest ecosystems, and particularly the soil layer, caused by wildfires, which affect wildlands all over the world. Soil and water bioengineering (SWBE) measures in fire-prone areas are essential for erosion mitigation, revegetation, as well as protection of settlements against inundations and landslides. This study's aim was to detect erosive areas at the basin scale for SWBE implementation in pre- and post-fire conditions based on a wildfire event in 2019 in southern Ecuador. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was used in combination with earth observation data to detect the fire-induced change in erosion behavior by adapting the cover management factor (C-factor). To understand the spatial accuracy of the predicted erosion-prone areas, high-resolution data from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) served for comparison and visual interpretation at the sub-basin level. As a result, the mean erosion at the basin was estimated to be 4.08 t ha−1 yr−1 in pre-fire conditions and 4.06 t ha−1 yr−1 in post-fire conditions. The decrease of 0.44% is due to the high autonomous vegetation recovery capacity of grassland in the first post-fire year. Extreme values increased by a factor of 4 in post-fire conditions, indicating the importance of post-fire erosion measures such as SWBE in vulnerable areas. The correct spatial location of highly erosive areas detected by the RUSLE was successfully verified by the UAV data. This confirms the effectivity of combining the RUSLE with very-high-resolution data in identifying areas of high erosion, suggesting potential scalability to other fire-prone regions. Mainstream planting systems of watershed sloping farmland span the globe and are closely related to the variations in the soil quality of watershed sloping farmland. However, little information is available about how mainstream planting systems influence spatiotemporal variations in the soil quality of watershed sloping farmland. The soil of 0–20 cm was collected at fixed points in three mainstream planting systems (a low-altitude citrus orchard system, a mid-altitude double-cropping system, and a high-altitude single-cropping system) at a fixed time each year for 15 years in a typical agricultural watershed of the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China. Fourteen physicochemical properties of the sampled soil were measured. We found that (1) the soil quality indexes of the citrus orchard system, double-cropping system, and single-cropping system decreased from 0.75, 0.71, and 0.67 in 2004 to 0.68, 0.57, and 0.55 in 2019, respectively; (2) the order of the six master control factors influencing soil quality was sand content > bulk density > total nitrogen > clay content > pH > total phosphorus in the citrus orchard system, sand content > bulk density > clay content > pH > total phosphorus > total nitrogen in the double-cropping system, and sand content > clay content > total phosphorus > pH > bulk density > total nitrogen in the single-cropping system; and (3) the total effects of soil erosion and fertilization on soil quality were −0.496 and −0.308 in the citrus orchard system, −1.254 and 0.371 in the double-cropping system, and −0.844 and 0.013 in the single-cropping system, respectively. We suggest that the three mainstream planting systems influence soil quality through variations in their master control factors caused primarily by soil erosion and secondarily by fertilization. The agricultural production of maize (Zea mays L.) increases the risk of water erosion. Perennial crops like cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) offer a sustainable alternative to produce biomass for biogas plants. The assessment of soil conservation measures requires calibrated soil erosion models that spatially identify soil erosion processes. These support decision-making by farmers and policymakers. Input parameters for the physically based soil erosion model EROSION 3D for cup plant cultivation were established in a field study. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to determine the model input parameter's skinfactor and surface roughness. The results showed a reduction of soil erosion and higher infiltration rates for cup plant resulting in higher skinfactors of 11.5 in June and 0.75 post-harvest (cup plant) compared to 1.2 in June and 0.21 post-harvest (maize). With the extended parameter catalogue of EROSION 3D for cup plant cultivation model simulations were conducted for a rainfall event in June (64 mm). The sediment budget would have been reduced by 92.6% through the growth of cup plant in comparison to conventionally grown maize. Perennial cup plant can, therefore, contribute to achieving the targets outlined in the European Green Deal by reducing soil erosion and enhancing soil health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving apple peel color has been an important objective in apple production. To better understand the effect and mechanism of the combined application of urea and FA (fulvic acid) regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis, a field experiment was performed in 2022 and 2023, respectively, under five treatments of urea + FA (CK, urea only; FA50, urea + 50 kg ha−1 FA; FA100, urea + 100 kg ha−1 FA; FA150, urea + 150 kg ha−1 FA; FA200, urea + 200 kg ha−1 FA), using isotope (13C and 15N) marking to analyze the changes in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) nutrient distribution as well as anthocyanin biosynthesis in fruits. We observed that, under FA application conditions, anthocyanin content in the peel was elevated in both years, with increases of 15.98~52.88% in 2022 and 15.93~52.94% in 2023. The best promotion effects were observed under FA150 treatment. Apart from the expression levels of anthocyanin biosynthesis-related genes and transcription factors in the apple peel, this positive effect on anthocyanin content induced by FA addition was also found to be associated with the optimization of C and N distribution in leaves and fruits. On the one hand, the application of FA not only enhanced leaf photosynthetic-related indexes (such as Pn, Gs, and Rubisco activity) and influenced (increased) S6PDH, SPS, and SS activities in leaves, but also elevated fruit sugar metabolism-related enzyme (SDH, SS-c, AI, and NI) activity and upregulated fruit stalk sugar transporter (MdSOT1, MdSOT3, MdSUT1 and MdSUT4) gene expression, which ultimately promoted the synthesis and the leaf to fruit transport of photosynthates, thus promoting 13C-photosynthate accumulation in fruits. On the other hand, FA application elevated leaves' N metabolism-related enzyme (GS and GOGAT) activity and optimized 15N distribution in leaves and fruits. Moreover, we also observed that FA application altered the fate of N fertilizer in apple orchards, showed an elevation in apple tree 15NUE and soil 15N residuals and showed a decrease in soil 15N loss. In summary, the appropriate application of FA150 (urea + 150 kg ha−1) synergistically optimized C and N nutrient distribution, and promoted anthocyanin biosynthesis in apple trees. Climate change and aridification have increased the risk of salinization and organic carbon loss in dryland soils. Enrichment using biochar and organic fertilizers has the potential to reduce salt toxicity and soil carbon loss. However, the effects of biochar and organic fertilizers on CO2 and CH4 emissions from saline soils in dryland areas, as well as their microbial mechanisms, remain unelucidated. To clarify these issues, we performed a 5-month incubation experiment on typical soda-type saline soil from the western part of the Songnen Plain using five treatments: control treatment (CK), 5% urea (U), straw + 5% urea (SU), straw + 5% urea + microbial agent (SUH), and straw + 5% urea + biochar (SUB). Compared with the SU treatment, the SUH and SUB treatments reduced cumulative CO2 emissions by 14.85% and 35.19%, respectively. The addition of a microbiological agent to the SU treatment reduced the cumulative CH4 emissions by 19.55%, whereas the addition of biochar to the SU treatment increased the cumulative CH4 emissions by 4.12%. These additions also increased the relative abundances of Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Ascomycota. Overall, the addition of biochar and organic fertilizer promoted CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake. This was mainly attributed to an improved soil gas diffusion rate due to the addition of organic materials and enhanced microbial stress due to soil salinity and alkalinity from the release of alkaline substances under closed-culture conditions. Remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) have been increasingly used for crop protection in coffee plantations. However, the applications can result in low spray deposition on leaves and higher product losses between rows compared to ground airblast sprayers. This study aimed to evaluate the spray deposition on the coffee canopy and potential losses to the soil during application with an RPA and an airblast sprayer at varying spray volumes. The experiment comprised four spray treatments: RPA at 10 L ha−1 and 20 L ha−1, and airblast sprayer at 200 L ha−1 and 300 L ha−1. Leaf deposition was quantified by measuring a tracer on leaves from the lower and upper parts of the coffee canopy using spectrophotometry. Spray losses to the soil were measured by analyzing tracer residues on Petri dishes positioned within the inter-rows and beneath the coffee canopy. Statistical process control was used to analyze spray deposition quality in the study area. Ground-based airblast spraying resulted in the highest overall canopy deposition, while RPA spraying led to greater losses within the inter-rows. No significant difference was observed in spray runoff beneath the canopy between ground-based and aerial applications. Leaf deposition exhibited random variability across all application methods. The mineralogical composition of the parent material, together with plant species and soil microorganisms, constitutes the foundational components of an ecosystem's energy cycle. Afforestation in arid-semi arid regions plays a crucial role in preventing erosion and enhancing soil quality, offering significant economic and ecological benefits. This study evaluated the effects of afforestation and different parent materials on the physicochemical and microbiological properties of soils, including microbial basal respiration (MR), as well as how these changes in soil properties after 15 years influence plant growth. For this purpose, various soil physicochemical parameters, MR, soil microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), stoichiometry (microbial quotient = Cmic/Corg = qMic and metabolic quotient = MR/Cmic = qCO2), and tree growth metrics such as height and diameter were measured. The results indicated that when the physicochemical and microbiological properties of soils from different bedrock types, along with the average values of tree growth parameters, were analyzed, afforestation areas with limestone bedrock performed better than those with andesite bedrock. Notably, sensitive microbial properties, such as Cmic, MR, and qMic, were positively influenced by afforestation. The highest values of Cmic (323 μg C g−1) and MR (1.3 CO2–C g−1 h−1) were recorded in soils derived from limestone. In contrast, the highest qCO2 was observed in the control plots of soils with andesite parent material (7.14). Considering all the measured soil properties, the samples can be ranked in the following order: limestone sample (LS) > andesite sample (AS) > limestone control (LC) > andesite control (AC). Similarly, considering measured plant growth parameters were ranked as LS > AS. As a result, the higher plant growth capacity and carbon retention of limestone soil indicate that it has high microbial biomass and microbial activity. Despite its widespread appearance, the scour of cohesive materials has received relatively less attention than the granular counterpart. In particular, the different modes of erosion of cohesive soils, its long-term temporal evolution, and the effect of the impinging angle and jet regime on scour features still represent open questions. To shed light on these aspects, a series of long-term experiments were conducted involving a circular jet impinging on a clay bed at angles of 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°. Experimental evidence allowed us to provide unprecedented insights into the peculiar evolution of the scour process, as well as empirical formulas to estimate the main geometrical features of the scour hole. Scour evolution is distinguished between continuous or discontinuous. These two modes differ for scour evolution kinetics and scour profile similitude. Distinct erosion mechanisms are documented, including the formation of a peculiar ring scour shape. The transition between strongly and weakly deflected jet regimes is investigated and, for the first time, related to the soil friction angle. Overall, the analysis of physical evidence allowed us to reach the following main conclusions: (1) the inclination of the jet and the tailwater depth affect the scour process and its evolution and (2) the long-term scour behavior should not be disregarded to provide trustable predicting tools. Rainfall erosivity is a crucial factor in the evaluation of soil erosion, significantly influencing the complex relationships among water, soil, and the environment. Understanding its attributes and variations in space and time is essential for effective water resource management, erosion mitigation, and land-use planning. This paper utilizes daily precipitation data from 123 grid points in the Niyang River Basin, spanning from 2008 to 2016, to calculate rainfall erosivity using a straightforward algorithmic model. Ordinary Kriging was used to examine the spatial and temporal variations in rainfall erosivity, while Spearman's correlation analysis was employed to examine the relationships between annual rainfall erosivity and various factors, including multi-year average precipitation, erosive rainfall, dry-season rainfall, wet-season rainfall, temperature, and elevation. The results indicate a year-by-year increase in rainfall erosivity in the basin, with a trend towards stabilization. The average annual rainfall erosivity over the years is 711 MJ · m m · h m − 2 · h − 1 , peaking at 1098 MJ · m m · h m − 2 · h − 1 in 2014. A significant 93.9% of rainfall erosivity is concentrated in the wet season, with a maximum of 191 MJ · m m · h m − 2 · h − 1 in July. The left bank of the mainstream, especially the central and lower sections of the main river and its tributaries, experiences the highest rainfall erosivity. Rainfall factors predominantly influence erosivity, with erosive rainfall showing the strongest correlation (rho = 0.93), while temperature and elevation have relatively minor effects. This study enhances the understanding of rainfall erosive forces in the plateau region and provides a scientific basis for predicting soil loss, developing effective erosion control measures, and ensuring sustainable land use. Human land use changes have altered soil erosion for millennia with extensive consequences on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems as well as on biogeochemical cycles along the land-ocean continuum. Despite their great importance, past erosion trends have high uncertainties limiting quantitative estimates of long-term erosion dynamics. Here, we applied a new approach combining well-dated paleo-records of soil erosion from lake sediments and a spatially distributed semi-empirical model to simulate annual soil erosion in six lake watershed systems in the Northwestern Alps during the Holocene. Progressive and abrupt changes in soil erosion are detected in the six watersheds. Progressive erosion explains most of the soil exports observed during the Early to Mid-Holocene period (from 11,700 to 3000 cal. yr. BP), while transient erosion crises (i.e., periods of abrupt increase in the erosion rates spanning approximately 1000 ± 500 years) led to massive soil losses during the Late-Holocene period (from 3000 to 1000 cal. yr. BP). Our coupled approach of proxy-model reconstruction shows that the transient erosion crises represent the half of the total soil erosion exports during the Holocene. These estimates defy current representations of large-scale soil erosion during the Holocene that do not consider transient erosion crises, hence potentially underestimating the anthropogenic perturbation of lateral fluxes and fate along the land-ocean continuum. Our results further suggest that erosion and/or land cover proxies need to be consistently integrated into model approaches when attempting to estimate past variations in mass exports from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems over centennial to millennial timescales. Coastal‐wetlands play a crucial role as carbon (C) reservoirs on Earth due to their C pool composition and functional sink, making them significant for mitigating global climate change. However, due to the development and utilization of wetland resources, many wetlands have been transformed into other land‐use types. The current study focuses on the alterations in soil organic‐C (SOC) in coastal‐wetlands following reclamation into aquaculture ponds. We conducted sampling at 11 different coastal‐wetlands along the tropical to temperate regions of the China coast. Each site included two community types, one with solely native species (Suaeda salsa, Phragmites australis and Mangroves) and the other with an adjacent reclaimed aquaculture pond. Across these 11 locations we compared SOC stock, active OC fractions, and soil physicochemical properties between coastal wetlands and aquaculture ponds. We observed that different soil uses, sampling sites, and their interaction had significant effects on SOC and its stock (p <.05). Reclamation significantly declined SOC concentration at depths of 0–15 cm and 15–30 cm by 35.5% and 30.3%, respectively, and also decreased SOC stock at 0–15 cm and 15–30 cm depths by 29.1% and 37.9%, respectively. Similar trends were evident for SOC stock, labile organic‐C, dissolved organic‐C and microbial biomass organic‐C concentrations (p <.05), indicating soil C‐destabilization and losses from soil following conversion. Soils in aquaculture ponds exhibited higher bulk density (BD; 11.3%) and lower levels of salinity (61.0%), soil water content (SWC; 11.7%), total nitrogen (TN) concentration (23.8%) and available‐nitrogen concentration (37.7%; p <.05) than coastal‐wetlands. Redundancy‐analysis revealed that pH, BD and TN concentration were the key variables most linked with temporal variations in SOC fractions and stock between two land use types. This study provides a theoretical basis for the rational utilization and management of wetland resources, the achievement of an environment‐friendly society, and the preservation of multiple service functions within wetland ecosystems. Understanding soil erosion and sediment transport from the hillslope scale to the regional scale is crucial for studies on water quality, soil‐water conservation, the lateral carbon cycle, environmental zoning and vulnerability. However, most existing erosion and sediment transport models are only applicable at the hillslope scale or for small watersheds with fine spatial resolutions (typically much less than 1 km). This study presents a process‐based soil erosion and sediment transport model for model applications designed for applications with coarse spatial (e.g., ≥10 km) and temporal (e.g., from hourly to daily) resolutions. This new model, referred to as VIC‐SED, effectively accounts for interactions between erosion and hydrological processes. This is achieved by tightly coupling the erosion processes with a hydrologically based Three‐layer Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC‐3L) land surface model (LSM) and to a multi‐scale routing (MSR) model. VIC‐SED considers the impacts of (a) the spatio‐temporal variability of rainfall intensity on erosion processes and (b) soil moisture on the soil detachment process. VIC‐SED is evaluated in two watersheds. Results demonstrate that VIC‐SED is capable of reproducing water and suspended sediment discharges at coarse spatial resolutions and varying temporal scales varying from 15‐min to daily intervals. Our study indicates that the VIC‐SED model is a promising tool for studying and assessing the impacts of climate and land cover changes on suspended sediment yields over large regions using coarse spatial and temporal resolutions. Quantifying soil redistribution rates, including both erosion and deposition, is critical for understanding erosion processes, landscape evolution, land management strategies, and the carbon cycle. In the Northeast Pacific coastal temperate rainforest, the interaction of perhumid climate and dense coniferous forest tends to form Spodosols which are soils characterized by a subsurface accumulation of organic matter and iron and aluminum oxides, across a range of contrasting lithologies. Deep Spodosols are frequently found on steep backslopes (up to 60%) of colluvial deposits, where shallower soils would typically be expected. We hypothesized that deep Spodosols in Southeast Alaska indicate slope stability, exhibiting negligible soil redistribution rates and stable surfaces regardless of the lithology. Our objective was to quantify soil redistribution rates for Spodosols formed on steep slopes across a range of lithologies in hilly and mountainous areas of Juneau, AK. We used 239+240Pu isotopes to quantify soil erosion and deposition rates in Spodosols formed on colluvial deposits from tonalite, slate, metavolcanic rock, and phyllite. 239+240Pu measurements revealed negligible soil redistribution rates for all studied pedons, ranging from erosion rates of 0.51 t/ha/year to deposition rates up to 0.43 t/ha/year. No difference was detected between the hill and mountain landforms, further supporting the idea that Spodosols could indicate slope stability over decadal timescales across the region. Understanding the resilience of Spodosols to erosion processes in varied lithologies and landforms on steep slopes is paramount for making informed decisions regarding sustainable land use, landslide risk mitigation, and effective carbon sequestration strategies. Land-use change (LUC) impacts biospheric carbon, encompassing biomass carbon and soil organic carbon (SOC). Despite the use of dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) in estimating the anthropogenic perturbation of biospheric carbon stocks, critical evaluations of model performance concerning LUC impacts are scarce. Here, we present a systematic evaluation of the performance of the DGVM Organising Carbon and Hydrology in Dynamic Ecosystems (ORCHIDEE) in reproducing observed LUC impacts on biospheric carbon stocks over Europe. First, we compare model predictions with observation-based gridded estimates of net and gross primary productivity (NPP and GPP), biomass growth patterns, and SOC stocks. Second, we evaluate the predicted response of soil carbon stocks to LUC based on data from forest inventories, paired plots, chronosequences, and repeated sampling designs. Third, we use interpretable machine learning to identify factors contributing to discrepancies between simulations and observations, including drivers and processes not resolved in ORCHIDEE (e.g. erosion, soil fertility). Results indicate agreement between the model and observed spatial patterns and temporal trends, such as the increase in biomass with age, when simulating biosphere carbon stocks. The direction of the SOC responses to LUC generally aligns between simulated and observed data. However, the model underestimates carbon gains for cropland-to-grassland conversions and carbon losses for grassland-to-cropland and forest-to-cropland conversions. These discrepancies are attributed to bias arising from soil erosion rate, which is not fully captured in ORCHIDEE. Agropyron mongolicum Keng is a diploid perennial grass of triticeae in gramineae. It has strong drought resistance and developed roots that can effectively fix the soil and prevent soil erosion. GDSL lipase or esterases/lipase has a variety of functions, mainly focusing on plant abiotic stress response. In this study, a GDSL gene from A. mongolicum, designated as AmGDSL1, was successfully cloned and isolated. The subcellular localization of the AmGDSL1 gene (pCAMBIA1302-AmGDSL1-EGFP) results showed that the AmGDSL1 protein of A. mongolicum was only localized in the cytoplasm. When transferred into tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana), the heterologous expression of AmGDSL1 led to enhanced drought tolerance. Under drought stress, AmGDSL1 overexpressing plants showed fewer wilting leaves, longer roots, and larger root surface area. These overexpression lines possessed higher superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and proline (PRO) activities. At the same time, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was lower than that in wild-type (WT) tobacco. These findings shed light on the molecular mechanisms involved in the GDSL gene's role in drought resistance, contributing to the discovery and utilization of drought-resistant genes in A. mongolicum for enhancing crop drought resistance. Livestock grazing is a major land use in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area (GBRCA). Heightened grazing density coupled with inadequate land management leads to accelerated soil erosion and increased sediment loads being transported downstream. Ultimately, these increased sediment loads impact the water quality of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) lagoon. Ground cover mapping has been adopted to monitor and assess the land condition in the GBRCA. However, accurate prediction of ground cover remains a vital knowledge gap to inform proactive approaches for improving land conditions. Herein, we explored two deep learning-based spatio-temporal prediction models, including convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM) and Predictive Recurrent Neural Network (PredRNN), to predict future ground cover. The two models were evaluated on different spatial scales, ranging from a small site (i.e., <5 km2) to the entire GBRCA, with different quantities of training data. Following comparisons against 25% withheld testing data, we found the following: (1) both ConvLSTM and PredRNN accurately predicted the next-season ground cover for not only a single site but also the entire GBRCA. They achieved this with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) under 5% and a Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) exceeding 0.65; (2) PredRNN superseded ConvLSTM by providing more accurate next-season predictions with better training efficiency; (3) The accuracy of PredRNN varies seasonally and spatially, with lower accuracy observed for low ground cover, which is underestimated. The models assessed in this study can serve as an early-alert tool to produce high-accuracy and high-resolution ground cover prediction one season earlier than observation for the entire GBRCA, which enables local authorities and grazing property owners to take preventive measures to improve land conditions. This study also offers a new perspective on the future utilization of predictive spatio-temporal models, particularly over large spatial scales and across varying environmental sites. Among the various types of polymeric materials, geosynthetics deserve special attention. A geosynthetic is a product made from synthetic polymers that is embedded in soils for various purposes. There are some basic functions of geosynthetics, namely, erosion control, filtration, drainage, separation, reinforcement, containment, barrier, and protection. Geosynthetics for erosion control are very effective in preventing or limiting soil loss by water erosion on slopes or river/channel banks. Where the current line runs through the undercut area of the slope, the curvature of the arch is increased. If this phenomenon is undesirable, the meander arch should be protected from erosion processes. The combination of geosynthetics provides the best resistance to erosion. In addition to external erosion, internal erosion of soils is also a negative phenomenon. Internal erosion refers to any process by which soil particles are eroded from within or beneath a water-retaining structure. Geosynthetics, particularly geotextiles, are used to prevent internal erosion of soils in contact with the filters. Therefore, the main objective of this review paper is to address the many ways in which geosynthetics are used for erosion control (internal and external). In texts, films, paintings and speeches, New Deal policymakers and allied intellectuals deployed biblical language and images to evoke contrition for environmental "sins." The sins of the fathers, namely the exploitative land use on the part of settlers and agro-capitalists, were now being visited on the Depression generation in the catastrophes not only of wind-born soil erosion (as in the Dust Bowl) but also the more extensive threat of gullying and water-born erosion. New Deal uses of the Bible, we argue, were not an instrumental conceit designed to manipulate hearts and minds. Rather, New Deal environmental thought, even at its seemingly most technocratic, was profoundly embedded within Christian imaginaries of sin and redemption. Scientific and religious modes of authority merged with the offices of state. As such, the soil Jeremiad is one illustration of both the need for and potential benefit of thickening "inter-field" religious and environmental methodologies—a potential we explore in this essay. In historicizing the soil Jeremiad, we also offer an example of how we might better understand the importance of religion for the history of the environmental movement beyond stories from activists' biographies and move toward a religious-environmental history of the public sphere itself. The transformation of radioactive contamination of agricultural lands with 137Cs isotope is one of the evidences of soil erosion. Changes in the radionuclide content and the corresponding rates of soil loss can be assessed quantitatively by repeated soil sampling at key sites over long time intervals. Being highly labor-consuming, such studies are few in number; they have not been conducted previously in the zone of intense Chernobyl contamination in the Central Russia. The method of repeated sampling (resampling) was used in 2023 within the plowed slopes of a small catchment in the southern part of Tula region, 26 years after the first sampling in 1997. The changes in 137Cs deposits (kBq/m2) that occurred during this period turned out to be statistically significant, with an average reduction of more than 10%. According to a proportional erosion conversion model based on relative changes in 137Cs deposits, the average annual rate of washing off was estimated at 11.7 t /ha. Such values of soil loss are comparable in general with the previously published results of independent mathematical modeling for this area. Thus, the use of resampling method, including that at new sites, appears to be promising for assessing the rate of soil loss. One of the important areas of soil erosion science is the development of soil conservation measures. The analysis of published works shows that in Russia most of the techniques and methods to control soil erosion were developed in the 1960s–1980s. In recent decades, interest in scientific and practical developments in this area has been declining. Published data on erosion control measures are poorly systematized, and their generally accepted classification is absent. The typification of erosion-control measures proposed by the authors made it possible to systematize all these measures found in the works and to create their register in the form of a table. Information about the efficiency of erosion control measures is scarce and contradictory. The results of agrotechnical measures are best studied. Non-inversive tillage is the most efficient among agrotechnical measures, it helps to reduce soil erosion by 70–90% according to published data; other agrotechnical measures, on average, reduce the rate of soil erosion by half. Climate change and socioeconomic transformation in the agricultural and industrial complex of Russia in recent decades have led to significant changes in the rate and volume of soil erosion. However, the analysis of literature indicates a shortage of works aimed at adapting existing erosion control measures, or developing new measures with due account for global and regional changes in erosion/deposition processes. The impact of land use and erosion-deposition processes on some physical, chemical, and biological soil properties in a small agricultural catchment in Kursk oblast is analyzed. Plowed Haplic Chernozems and stratozems (Fluvic Chernic Phaeozems (Loamic, Pachic)), as well as unplowed stratozems of a dry valley bottom have been studied. The proportion of large soil aggregates (clods) >10 mm in soils is high on plowed land and low in the dry valley bottom. Differences in the carbon and nitrogen content and in the C/N ratio have not been detected. The analytical pyrolysis has revealed 26 pyrolysates in the composition of soil organic matter (SOM). The relative abundances of pyrrole, pyridine, toluene, and indan among SOM pyrolysates are higher in plowed soils as compared to the soils at the dry valley bottom. Proportions of furfural and methyl furfural among SOM pyrolysates are higher in soils of the dry valley bottom than in plowed soils. Differences in the content of alkanes and phenol are absent. The biomass of microorganisms is mainly formed by fungi (97–99%), and their abundance is greater in soils of the dry valley bottom than in soils of the plowland. Differences in the respiratory activity of the studied soils have not been revealed. The significant influence of erosion-deposition processes and soil cultivation on the spatial heterogeneity of the SOM composition and microbiological parameters is shown. Plowed soils are characterized by the high relative abundance of nitrogen-containing SOM components, while soils at the dry valley bottom have a relatively high abundance of carbohydrate components of mature SOM. The accumulation of fungal biomass and an increase in the structure coefficient in soils of the dry valley bottom indicate the participation of material redeposited from slopes in soil aggregation. Nitrogen (N) availability is a well‐known driver of ecosystem structure and function, but as air quality regulations continue to reduce atmospheric N deposition, there is a need to understand how managed and unmanaged ecosystems respond to widespread decreases in terrestrial N availability. Historical N eutrophication, from pollution or fertilisation, may continue to constrain contemporary responses to decreases in available N because of altered plant and microbial feedbacks. Thus, while certain management practices like prescribed fire remove N from grassland ecosystems, the role of fire supporting ecosystems recovering from chronic N input is unknown.To address this knowledge gap, we ceased a 30‐year N‐fertilisation treatment at a field experiment in a tallgrass prairie ecosystem crossed with burned and fire‐suppressed (unburned) treatments. We established subplots within each previously fertilised, recovering plot, fertilised at the same historical rate (10 g N m−2 year−1 as NH4NO3), to compare plant and soil properties in recovering plots with control (never‐fertilised) and still‐fertilised treatments within different fire regimes.We document different N‐fertilisation legacies among ecosystem properties in burned and unburned prairies recovering from N‐fertilisation. Soil N availability, nitrification and denitrification potentials in recovering plots remained higher than controls for 3–5 years—indicative of positive legacies—in both burned and unburned prairies, but burning did not reduce this legacy. In burned prairies, however, a positive legacy in above‐ground plant production persisted because a more productive grass species (switchgrass) replaced the previously dominant species (big bluestem) even though root C:N, but not soil C:N, increased to return back to control levels. Consequently, the main N loss pathways in burned and unburned prairies (pyrovolatilisation and microbially mediated processes, respectively) led to similar losses of soil total N (20–28 g N m−2) over 5 years.Synthesis: Our results indicate that N eutrophication induces positive legacies of ecosystem functions that can persist for at least half a decade. N‐induced legacies arise because of shifts in soil microbial N‐cycling and plant functional traits. As a result, different management practices may elicit similar trajectories of ecosystem recovery in terms of total and available soil N because of different plant and microbial feedbacks. This investigation explores the erosion dynamics in sandy soils triggered by underground pipeline fractures, applying transparent soil technology for visualization. Through this approach, the erosion process within the transparent soil model was meticulously recorded using photography, enabling the quantitative analysis of collapse pit dimensions over time. Results reveal that soil erosion primarily manifests directly above the pipeline fracture, varying significantly with hydraulic conditions. In scenarios devoid of water flow within the pipeline, an increase in collapse pit depth is halted, attributed to the accumulation and blockage of soil particles at the fracture point. Contrastingly, under half-pipe and full-pipe flow conditions, the depth of the collapse pit swiftly reaches the fracture site. The flow of water notably escalates the expansion rate of the erosion pit, especially above the rupture, leading to continuous enlargement of the central area and subsequent secondary and tertiary collapses at the pit's apex. The study further identifies the impact of water flow on soil scouring near the pipeline rupture, with pronounced effects in full-pipe flow, predominantly ahead of the rupture point, and less significant impacts observed in half-pipe flow scenarios. Differential image analysis facilitated the categorization of soil into distinct zones: collapsed, loosened, stable, and eroded, with a direct correlation observed between the extent of the loosened zone and the velocity of water flow. Sediment fingerprinting is increasingly being used to provide information that can help guide management decisions at the watershed scale. The objectives of this study were to investigate the implications of different sediment fingerprinting sampling designs on characterizing sediment dynamics in the Beheshtabad Watershed in Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari Province, western Iran. First, nitrogen, organic carbon, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium, zinc, manganese, iron, and lime fingerprints were used to discriminate among four potential sediment sources including agricultural topsoil, rangeland, as well as rainfed and urban lands. Then, the suspended sediment was collected from drainage areas at five sites. Nested and local-location fingerprinting sampling designs were employed to evaluate the influence of geomorphic connectivity and land use on apportionment results by using the same source and sediment data set. By averaging all locations using the nested method, agricultural land with an average of 69% had the highest contribution to sedimentation followed by rainfed land with an average of 19.9%, rangeland with an average of 6.8%, and urban lands with an average of 5.99%. Compared to the mean of the total method samples, the local method showed greater soil loss from agricultural lands and lower soil loss from rangeland and rainfed lands. Generally, surface soil in sediments came from agricultural land use. According to the results, total nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, and calcium were the optimum tracers that correctly distinguished source samples. Overall, each of the two fingerprinting sampling designs provided the same information. Thus, the fingerprinting method can determine the sources of sediments. Given the importance of the fingerprinting method, future studies can focus on determining the appropriate combination of tracers and the effect of sediment sampling time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an area like India, where a large number of people are dependent upon agriculture, soil erosion assumes the role of a silent killer. A comprehensive soil management plan requires systematic development and planning at the scale of the natural boundaries, i.e., the watersheds. These watersheds are now actively encouraged to become the planning unit for a wide range of natural resource management. Sub-basin prioritisation with respect to erosion susceptibility, therefore, has become increasingly popular in the last few decades as this helps in optimal distribution, especially in a country like India, where the availability of resources is scarce. Erosion is a complex problem wherein a large number of factors play an important role in influencing this process. Therefore, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques are becoming more popular in this domain. However, there are a myriad of MCDM models in literature, and a proper and systematic comparison between such MCDM models may help in deciding on the best possible model in the given categories. This paper has tried to make such a comparison for morphometry-based sub-basin prioritisation in the rocky terrain of the Chaka River Basin, Eastern India. The MCDM models that have been investigated include technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), VlseKriterijumsk Optimizacija Kompromismo Resenje (VIKOR), multi-objective optimisation on the basis of ratio analysis (MOORA), compound factor (CF), weighted sum model (WSM), weighted product model (WPM) and weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS). These results were compared with respect to the RUSLE-based annual soil loss of the Chaka Basin with the help of the ROC curve. Results reveal that the MOORA MCDM method is the most reliable (AUC = 0.711), whereas the TOPSIS is the least authentic (AUC = 0.378). Nano-layered ternary compounds M n+1 AX n phases combine properties of both ceramics and metals, holding promising prospect for various applications. In this work, the microstructure evolution of coarse Ti 3 AlC 2 particles, as well as the microstructure, physical properties and arc-induced degradation of Ag/Ti 3 AlC 2 electrical contact materials (ECMs) with varying particle sizes of Ti 3 AlC 2 were investigated. The Ti 3 AlC 2 particles milled by vibration were inhomogeneous, whereas those milled through high energy ball milling for 3 h were basically uniformly refined and delaminated to nano-flakes with edge length of ∼100–350 nm without obvious decomposition. With decreasing particle size, the interaction between Ag and Ti 3 AlC 2 was enhanced, thus mitigating the decrease of density and hardness after sintering. Though fine Ti 3 AlC 2 particles led to increased hardness, easier decomposition of finer Ti 3 AlC 2 during both sintering and arc erosion resulted in greater thermal accumulation and accelerated erosion process, thus negatively impacting the arc erosion resistance of Ag/Ti 3 AlC 2 ECMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed at investigating the harm from ecosystem services (ESs) according to agricultural land conversion (ALC) by using meta-analysis. The results of meta-regression showed that spatiotemporal effects had significant influences on some ES losses, and the maximum spatial impacts were relevant to Asia and Europe. Moreover, the results of ALC rate coefficients in meta-regression indicated that three large losses of ES were related to soil erosion (0.314), air pollution (0.202), and climate change (0.161). Therefore, the ALC should be done at a suitable conversion rate to reduce ES losses. Accordingly, administrators are suggested to consider careful research planning for the ALC in the process of economic development. Other strategies highlighted the importance of ALC–ES interactions for human well-being, such as measuring the pricing of goods and services based on land resources, continuously monitoring illegal ALC, and imposing taxes on unplanned ALC. Comprehending the anaerobic nitrogen transformations, including denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and anaerobic ammonium oxidation linked with iron reduction (Feammox) in soil, is essential for improving soil fertility and minimizing the environmental impacts of nitrogen loss. Despite this, research on anaerobic nitrogen transformations, particularly Feammox in paddy soil, is sparse. This study examined soil denitrification, anammox, and Feammox, along with their respective contributions to nitrogen loss in paddy soil at various depths, under different fertilization and irrigation treatments. It utilized 15N isotope labeling to investigate the limiting factors of these anaerobic nitrogen transformations and their interactions. The findings showed that denitrification rates ranged from 0.41 to 2.12 mg N kg−1 d−1, while anammox rates ranged from 0.062 to 0.394 mg N kg−1 d−1, contributing 84.3% to 88.1% and 11.8% to 15.7% of total soil nitrogen loss, respectively. Denitrification was identified as the predominant pathway for nitrogen loss across different soil depths. Fertilization and irrigation had more pronounced impacts on anaerobic nitrogen transformations than did soil depth, potentially affecting these processes through both abiotic and biotic pathways. This study identified significant correlations among the three types of anaerobic nitrogen transformations. Tunnel excavation in short distance will change the physical equilibrium stress field of stratum and cause adverse effects on adjacent existing pile. In this paper, a simplified analytical solution is thus proposed to evaluate the existing pile behaviors due to adjacent tunnel excavation. First, tunneling-induced horizontal free field soil movement calculated by a modified Loganathan's formula during shield tunnel excavation is presented. Then, consider that the existing pile is a Euler–Bernoulli beam resting on the Pasternak foundation model. The differential equation of lateral displacement of existing pile is established by combining the coupling condition of soil-pile interaction. Finally, the analytical solution of lateral displacement of the existing pile caused by adjacent tunneling is obtained by finite difference method. The reliability of the analytical solution is validated by comparing with boundary element program, finite element simulation and field measurements. Parametric studies are also preformed to estimate the effects of various factors on an existing pile, including the clearance distance, tunnel depth, tunnel radius, pile diameter and tunneling-induced soil loss rate. A prediction formula for evaluating the maximum lateral displacement of a pile caused by adjacent tunneling was presented, which the deviation rate between predictions and the results of published case reports is less than 10%. In Iran, particularly in the Zagros forests, natural land uses are increasingly being converted into agriculture, which can negatively influence soil hydrological processes. To study this, three replicate micro-plots were installed on similar slopes in the forest (FO), rangeland (RA), and vineyard ‒ under the canopy (VUC) and in the inter-row space (VIR) ‒ to measure soil loss and surface runoff. Top- and sub-soil samples were randomly taken in three replicates from three sites for each land use/cover (LUC). Standard laboratory methods were utilized to measure the designated soil properties. According to the results, soil organic matter (SOM), aggregation indices, residual (ϴr) and saturated water content (ϴs), water content at field capacity (ϴFC), and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) showed a significant decreasing trend as follows: FO > RA > VUC > VIR, whereas EC, pH, CaCO3, bulk density, and K-factor significantly showed an increasing opposite trend. LUC did not affect permanent wilting point (ϴPWP), available water content (AWC), and α and n van Genuchten's parameters. It was also found that RA and FO exhibited a higher repellency index than VUC and VIR. The forest had the lowest soil loss and runoff due to its higher porosity, SOM, aggregate stability, infiltration rate, water storage capacity, and surface cover. The highest soil loss and runoff were observed in VIR because of the vineyard's management operations and the bareness of soil between the vine rows. Conservation measures, such as no-tillage, mulching, or cover crops in the inter-row spaces, are recommended to mitigate these negative effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hybrids between Corylus avellana and Corylusamericana are one of several new perennial and winter annual crops being developed as part of the Forever Green Initiative at the University of Minnesota. As a woody perennial shrub, hazelnuts in agroforestry systems can provide a new revenue source for rural landowners; continuous living cover to prevent soil erosion, sequester soil carbon, protect water quality, and provide wildlife habitat; and a delicious and healthful new local food. If hazelnuts are to fulfill their potential, better germplasm and better nitrogen fertilization recommendations are both needed. We modeled these trials after trials by R.E. Worley, who showed that yields of pecan trees fertilized only when leaf nitrogen (N) fell below critical thresholds were maintained with lower levels of applied N, benefitting both the environment and growers' profits. Results of trials at three Minnesota sites, comparing N applied only when leaf N fell below 1.8%, 2.0%, or 2.2% with annual N applications and no N over 4 years, support using 2.2% leaf N as the critical threshold for N fertilization. Our results showed that whereas only 8% of N applied annually ended up in the harvested nuts and husks, N that was applied to plants that demonstrated hunger for it was more efficiently taken up. The slope erosion in the distribution area of completely weathered granite is often relatively severe, causing serious ecological damage and property loss. Ecological restoration is the most effective means of soil erosion control. Taking completely weathered granite backfill soil as the research object, two types of slope protection plants, Vetiver grass and Pennisetum hydridum, were selected. We analyzed these two herbaceous plants' soil reinforcement and slope protection effects through artificial planting experiments, indoor simulated rainfall experiments, and direct shear tests. The test results showed that the runoff and sediment production rates of the two herbaceous plant slopes were significantly lower than those of the bare slope, with the order of bare slope > Vetiver grass slope > Pennisetum hydridum slope. Compared with the bare slope, the cumulative sediment production of the Vetiver grass slope at 60 min decreased by 56.73–60.09%, and the Pennisetum hydridum slope decreased by 75.97–78.45%. The indoor direct shear test results showed that soil cohesion decreases with increasing water content. As the root content of Vetiver grass roots increases, soil cohesion first increases and then decreases, reaching a maximum value when the root content is 1.44%. As the root content of Pennisetum hydridum increases, soil cohesion increases. The internal friction angle increases slightly with increasing water content, while the root content does not significantly affect the internal friction angle. Therefore, the shear strength of soil decreases when the water content increases. The shear strength of the Vetiver grass root-soil composite reaches a peak at a root content of 1.44%, while the shear strength of the giant king grass root-soil composite increases as the root content increases. At the same root content, the shear strength of the Vetiver grass root-soil composite is slightly higher than that of giant king grass. The reinforcement effect of roots on shallow soil is better than on deep soil. Both herbaceous plants have an excellent soil-fixing and slope-protecting impact on the fully weathered granite backfill slope. Pennisetum hydridum's soil and water conservation effect is significantly better than that of the Vetiver grass. In contrast, Vetiver grass roots slightly outperform Pennisetum hydridum in enhancing the shear strength of the soil. In order to study the influence of fissure morphology on soil moisture-content changes under different fissure types, this study established HYDRUS 2.0 numerical models of stepped fissures and planar fissures with different fissure widths and depths based on the experimental condition parameters obtained from physical simulation tests. Then, we simulated the spatial and temporal variation rules of soil moisture around the fissures. The results showed a high level of agreement between the HYDRUS numerical simulations and actual measurements, indicating that the model accurately reflects the movement of soil moisture near fissures. The study found that ground fissures affected the spatial distribution of soil moisture, leading to an increased rate of moisture loss in the deep soil near the fissure walls. Moreover, larger fissures had greater horizontal and vertical effects on soil moisture. The soil moisture content is lower closer to the fissure walls. As the soil depth increased, the influence of the fissures gradually diminished. For planar fissure with a depth of 50 cm, the soil moisture content was 30.6%, 17.8%, and 8.4% lower at depths of 10, 30, and 50 cm, respectively, compared to a fissure with a depth of 10 cm. For a stepped fissure with a depth of 50 cm, the soil moisture content was 29.2%, 20.9%, and 13.9% lower at depths of 10, 30, and 50 cm, respectively, compared to a fissure with a depth of 10 cm. Under the same conditions of fissure width and depth, stepped fissures exhibit faster moisture loss, and the larger the fissure, the more significant the additional moisture loss compared to planar fissures. The accuracy of landslide susceptibility mapping is influenced by the quality of sample data, factor systems, and assessment methods. This study aims to enhance the representativeness and overall quality of the sample dataset through an effective sample expansion strategy, achieving greater precision and reliability in the landslide susceptibility model. An integrated interpretative framework for landslide susceptibility assessment is developed using the XGBoost-SHAP-PDP algorithm to deeply investigate the key contributing factors of landslides in karst areas. Firstly, 17 conditioning factors (e.g., surface deformation rate, land surface temperature, slope, lithology, and NDVI) were introduced based on field surveys, satellite imagery, and literature reviews, to construct a landslide susceptibility conditioning factor system in line with karst geomorphology characteristics. Secondly, a sample expansion strategy combining the frequency ratio (FR) with SBAS-InSAR interpretation results was proposed to optimize the landslide susceptibility assessment dataset. The XGBoost algorithm was then utilized to build the assessment model. Finally, the SHAP and PDP algorithms were applied to interpret the model, examining the primary contributing factors and their influence on landslides in karst areas from both global and single-factor perspectives. Results showed a significant improvement in model accuracy after sample expansion, with AUC values of 0.9579 and 0.9790 for the training and testing sets, respectively. The top three important factors were distance from mining sites, lithology, and NDVI, while land surface temperature, soil erosion modulus, and surface deformation rate also significantly contributed to landslide susceptibility. In summary, this paper provides an in-depth discussion of the effectiveness of LSM in predicting landslide occurrence in complex terrain environments. The reliability and accuracy of the landslide susceptibility assessment model were significantly improved by optimizing the sample dataset within the karst landscape region. In addition, the research results not only provide an essential reference for landslide prevention and control in the karst region of Southwest China and regional central engineering construction planning but also provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of geologic hazards globally, showing a wide range of application prospects and practical significance. Soil degradation in Europe is mostly represented by soil erosion that, as a sediment production mechanism, is the main environmental threat to many watersheds, including the Bovilla watershed (Tirana), useful for the supply of drinking water to the city, and therefore, the care of water quality is of particular interest. The soil erosion of the Bovilla watershed was monitored in a work set up in June 2017. Following this work, this research updates the previous data on soil loss at the Bovilla watershed in t/ha/year to September 2019 and focuses on the identification and monetary evaluation of the ecosystem services (ESs) linked to soil erosion (loss of carbon, loss of mineral elements, habitat quality, crop productivity, and sustainable tourism suitability). Then, we applied the replacement cost analysis to test the economic convenience and suggest the adoption of sustainable land management practices (e.g., reforestation) able to improve the quality water in this watershed. The study carried out demonstrates that the values of soil lost due to erosion vary depending on the type of land use (ranging from average values of 120.32 t/ha for bare land to values of 8.16 t/ha for wooded areas). Furthermore, from the application of monetary methods for the evaluation of some ecosystem services linked to erosion (loss of carbonaceous and mineral elements, habitat quality, productivity, suitability for sustainable tourism), it clearly emerges that the value of the productivity of agricultural crops varies from EUR 0 to 35,320.50/ha and that the service represents a more incisive service than the previous ones, so much so as to make the conversion of some agricultural land with high productivity values into wooded areas economically disadvantageous. The data from this study may help to develop Bovilla watershed management strategies for erosion and pollution control and sediment remediation mainly in agricultural lands. A program of measures can be effective for controlling soil erosion, but it must be implemented over long time frames, and it requires relevant investments from the public and private sectors, also with a view to increase the allocation of economic values of monetary compensation aimed at those who decide to start forestation projects on highly productive soils. Understanding the effects of short-term artificial revegetation on preventing soil degradation in erosion gullies of black soil areas is essential to choosing the most suitable species of vegetation for controlling the development of erosion gullies. A field experiment with short-term artificial revegetation with herbaceous species (Medicago sativa L., Glycyrrhiza pallidiflora Maxim., Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. ex Nevski, Rheum palmatum L., Asparagus officinalis L., Trifolium repens L., Bromus inermis Leyss., Elymus dahuricus Turcz.) and a runoff scouring test were conducted in a typical erosion gully in a black soil area. Soil erosion, physicochemical characteristics, and shoot/root characteristics were measured to evaluate the effects of short-term artificial revegetation. Short-term artificial revegetation significantly decreased (p < 0.05) sediment yield by 91.1% ± 7.2% compared with that of bare soil. Soil total nitrogen (TN), total potassium (TP), available phosphorus (AP), cation exchange capacity (CEC), water-stable aggregates > 0.25 mm (WR0.25), and aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD) and mean geometric diameter (GWD) were significantly correlated with vegetated treatments, indicating they were factors sensitive to short-term artificial revegetation. Except for total potassium (TK), the other soil characteristics decreased in vegetated treatments. In addition to increasing TK, vegetated treatments also increased soil available nitrogen (AN)/TN ratios in the short term. The overall effects of different herbaceous species on soil and water conservation, soil quality, and vegetation growth were evaluated, and Trifolium repens L. is the most suitable for preventing soil degradation in an erosion gully. Frequent soil erosion disasters in the middle reaches of the Yellow River (MRYR) have a profound effect on the sediment load of the river. This paper addresses the intertwined effects of human activities and climate change on river runoff and sediment load. Therefore, runoff and sediment loads from hydrological stations along the main and tributary rivers within the MRYR were used. The Mann–Kendall (M–K) trend test and the double mass curve analysis, among other analytical tools, were used to examine the erosion patterns of these rivers from 1950 to 2022, as well as the main factors driving these changes. The results showed that the runoff depth of the Yan River tended to decrease, and there was a significant decrease in the mainstream and nine other tributaries, with a significant decrease in the sediment transport modulus for both the mainstream and tributaries. In the main river, human activities contributed between 69.99% and 94.69% to the runoff and between 88.52% and 98.49% to the sediment load, while in the tributaries, the contribution of human activities was greater. The annual runoff and annual sediment load in the MRYR showed a decreasing trend, with a discernible impact of human activities. The source region of the Yellow River (SRYR), known as the "Chinese Water Tower", is currently grappling with severe soil erosion, which jeopardizes the sustainability of its alpine grasslands. Large-scale soil erosion monitoring poses a significant challenge, complicating global efforts to study soil erosion and land cover changes. Moreover, conventional methods for assessing soil erosion do not adequately address the variety of erosion types present in the SRYR. Given these challenges, the objectives of this study were to develop a suitable assessment and prediction model for soil erosion tailored to the SRYR's needs. By leveraging soil erosion data measured by 137Cs from 521 locations and employing the random forest (RF) algorithm, a new soil erosion model was formulated. Key findings include that: (1) The RF soil erosion model significantly outperformed the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) model and revised wind erosion equation (RWEQ) model, achieving an R2 of 0.52 and an RMSE of 5.88. (2) The RF model indicated that from 2001 to 2020, the SRYR experienced an average annual soil erosion modulus (SEM) of 19.32 t·ha−1·y−1 with an annual total erosion in the SRYR of 225.18 × 106 t·y−1. Spatial analysis revealed that 78.64% of the region suffered low erosion, with erosion intensity declining from northwest to southeast. (3) The annual SEM in the SRYR demonstrated a downward trend from 2001 to 2020, with 83.43% of the study area showing improvement. Based on these findings, measures for soil erosion prevention and control in the SRYR were proposed. Future studies should refine the temporal analysis to better understand the influence of extreme climate events on soil erosion, while leveraging high-resolution data to enhance model accuracy. Mitigating soil erosion's effects have been prioritized since the early 20th century. Rainfall simulators and analytical prediction models are used to determine soil erosion susceptibility. This study used different methodologies to measure soil erodibility in two hydrographic sub-basins, the Renato and Caiabi, in the Middle and Upper Teles Pires River in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The rainfall simulator showed a higher range of K-factor values for the Renato sub-basin of 0.0009 to 0.0086 Mg × h × (MJ × mm)−1 and a lower range of K-factor values for the Caiabi sub-basin of 0.0014 to 0.0031 Mg × h × (MJ × mm)−1. Soil loss equations similarly estimated a higher range of K-factor values for the Renato of 0.0008 to 0.0990 Mg × h × (MJ × mm)−1 and a lower range of K-factor values for the Caiabi of 0.0014 to 0.0846 Mg × h × (MJ × mm)−1. There was no significant difference at the 5% level for the K factor determined by the rainfall simulator for both sub-basins. Equations specified in Bouyoucos (1935) and Lombardi Neto and Bertoni (1975) showed significant correlation (5%) for farming systems in the Caiabi sub-basin. Indirect methodologies that performed well for correlation were equations 2 and 3 from Roloff and Denardin (1994), which use iron and aluminum as parameters. This research investigates the effects of land use/land cover (LULC) and demographical changes on runoff and erosion processes in the watersheds of border highlands in Serbia. It provides an interdisciplinary approach, linking demography (human geography) with physical geography (hydrology and geomorphology). (A) A predominant decrease in curve number (CN), a key hydrological indicator, is recorded in more than 20 watersheds in Eastern and Southeastern Serbia, largely due to continuous depopulation and abandonment of arable land over recent decades. In contrast, minor CN changes are dominant in over 10 watersheds in Western and Southwestern Serbia. (B) Through cluster analysis, four regions are spatially delineated by changes in four key indicators: runoff, soil erosion, agricultural land use, and rural population. Soil erosion change is correlated with the deagrarianisation and depopulation processes at a significance of p < 0.0001 with r = 0.580 and r = 0.629, respectively. The border watersheds are being studied for the first time using a complex approach that analyses the relationships between changes in demography, land use, surface runoff, and soil erosion. Microalgae have unique properties that allow them to thrive in unconventional spaces, making them suitable for areas that are not normally suitable for crop growth. This is due to their ability to multiply rapidly, grow easily and adapt to different environments at low cost. As a result, the present study aims to analyze the potential of microalgae as a source of agricultural nutrition, as well as the health benefits they can provide. The following research was conducted on an experimental scale using a closed system (photobioreactor) for the cultivation of microalgae, its physicochemical characterization of the cultures and dry biomass. It can be observed the percentages of 11 N; 1.4 P; 0.3 K and its micronutrients are essential for plant growth, since microalgae-based biofertilizers are considered as a sustainable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. The use of microalgae biomass as a biofertilizer in agriculture can increase fertility, reduce soil erosion and nutrient loss, and improve soil quality over time. The changes in land use in Goiás state due to the advancement of agriculture and livestock have caused a major influence on soil losses. This study identified the potential soil loss in the state and alone in 183 watershed basins for water catchment in the state of Goias using the universal soil loss equation (USLE), and their R, K, LS, and CP factors were obtained by geoprocessing tool. The results generated a scenario where most of the area of the state, 77.6%, shows weak erosive sensitivity, 8.5% moderate, and 6.9% erosive susceptibility with high erosive susceptibility. Concerning soil loss of funding basins it was found that twelve basins showed very high class and two in severe erosive susceptibility, 64% of the basins were framed with low and moderate erosive susceptibility. Thus, the use of USLE in conjunction with the Geoprocessing tool was effective in the spatial representation of soil loss, identifying areas most vulnerable to the erosion process, and assisting in proposing priority measures for soil conservation. Soil erosion is considered to be a prominent problem, and its regular spatial assessment in the watershed is required. Thus, for the present study, the Kodar river basin in Chhattisgarh, India, was chosen for the investigation. Three different models, namely Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), and Unit Power-Based Soil Erosion and Deposition (USPED), were chosen by incorporating remote sensing and GIS platforms and their performance were compared. On the basis of area's varied slope and land usage, the erosion rate was calculated. It was noted that a difference of 33,68632 t, −11570.08 t, and 1023.99 t in the sedimentation values of the USLE, RUSLE, and USPED models, respectively were observed. The observed sedimentation data was validated, and the USPED model was found to be the most authentic model among the selected three models. Water erosion is one of the most extensive processes of soil and land degradation. This process significantly deteriorates the quality of ecosystem services provided. Studying the mechanism and consequences of this phenomenon will help develop strategies to mitigate its impact on the environment. One of the challenges in studying water erosion is the high cost of conducting field research over large areas. Another challenge is the limitation of existing models, which are often developed for specific regions. Our research aims to address these problems by adapting the widely used RUSLE2 model to local conditions. Beijing was chosen as the study area due to its rich information resources and extensive results from field measurements of soil water erosion. Calculations were performed using a raster data model, which included a slope angle model, slope length, soil erodibility, rainfall erosion potential factors from precipitation and snowmelt, land use types, and vegetation cover management factors. All data were taken from open sources. The average soil erosion in the studied area was 25 t · ha–1 per year. The discrepancy with other studies was less than 1%. Land degradation is a global problem of mankind, the greatest contribution to which belongs to aridity and soil erosion. The social consequences of land degradation are extremely important, but poorly conceptualized issues. This makes it difficult to create effective research programs to study them. The article provides an overview of the issues under consideration. An expert study was conducted to identify a problem field in the field of studying the social consequences of land degradation. By interviewing nine recognized scientific experts in the field of land degradation studies, the most reliable judgments were identified, which served as a basis for highlighting the main forms of manifestation of the social consequences of land degradation. Private research concepts were compiled, which consist in highlighting the position of each expert on the main consequences of land degradation. As a result, a generalized expert model of the problem field of the social consequences of land degradation was formed. According the model all experts note the interdisciplinary nature of the study of the issues under consideration, which are placed at the intersection of environmental, economic, and social problems. The overwhelming majority of experts noted the direct nature of the effect of land degradation on the formation of social consequences. Thanks to the integration of individual ideas, it was possible to identify characteristics for which there are discrepancies. This provides an opportunity for a broader study of the social consequences of land degradation. However, there is an expert opinion that the social consequences are rather indirect and are realized through resource problems. Some experts draw attention to the fact that there are the extreme forms of land degradation that significantly increases the manifestation of social consequences. According to experts, land degradation can lead to change in social status, a decrease in the recreational potential of land, hunger, a change in life expectancy and loss of jobs, increased stratification of society, changes in the cost of housing and a change in the type of land use, reduction in the use of land for agricultural needs, and changes in people's attitudes to more individualistic ones. It was also noted that the use of products from degraded lands could lead to an increase in cancer incidence in the region. Despite the large number of different antierosion practices used in the country, the dynamics of the areas of eroded lands remains multidirectional and unstable. The goal of the work was to propose a methodological approach for semantic modeling of sustainable land management with a focus on antierosion measures, the methods for such modeling and land management in the areas prone to soil erosion in order to maintain and restore degraded lands. A variety of erosion control techniques, methods, approaches, technologies and activities described in different sources, including databases on best practices, educational and scientific literature serves as objects of the study. The study was based on the integration of several working hypotheses and approaches proposed by the authors in earlier publications. The methodological basis of these approaches is the concept of land degradation neutrality (LDN) and the principles for assessing the "sustainability" of environmental management based on it. Using the example of several sites, methods for semantic modeling of the sustainability of antierosion land management are considered. These methods are based on assessing the achievement of LDN using so-called "good" practices. For the assessment, the following parameters of the model were applied: "natural potential" (reflecting resource potential, adaptive potential and the ability to self-recovery of land), "expanded potential" (reflecting human improvements in natural potential and the sufficiency of socioeconomic conditions); "actual adverse impacts," including natural processes and phenomena and those caused by human impact; and "potential adverse impacts," including natural and anthropogenic risks. Model parameters can be combined in the required combination and reflect different modeling tasks in order to determine the adequacy of erosion control practices, including general approaches and techniques for regional models, methods and technologies for subregional and local ones, and specific activities and measures for local models implemented for individual land plots and farms. The proposed method for visualizing models, based on the construction of radar diagrams, is a flexible solution that provides opportunity to consider the sufficiency of practices, combine them into groups, and also generalize sustainability parameters depending on the goals of modeling. Soil erosion, as a type of land degradation, affects various human economic interests. It is shown that the most promising areas of erosion studies where economic methods can be applied are assessment of actual damage from soil erosion, determination of the amount of probable damage from erosion processes in soils, and economic analysis in the development of sustainable land use systems for areas with soils subject to erosion. The group of methods for determining economic damage, including those which take into account ecosystem services that soils "lose" as a result of erosion processes, is characterized by the greatest development. Methods for assessing the risk of soil erosion have a significant development potential, since an extensive database of predictive models and equations (USLE, RUSLE, RUSLE-2, WEPP, EUROSE, CREAMS, EPIC, VNIIZiZPE, etc.) has been created, which make it possible to assess indicators of soil erosion in the future. Sustainable land use systems are developed using the neoclassical capital theory, which requires that the fertility of soil and net social benefits from nonmarket goods and services from agricultural lands should be maintained over time.
