Background: Due to a lack of consensus on adjuvant treatments for pT1N1 gastric cancer, surgeons face a dilemma when deciding treatments for patients with pT1N1 gastric cancer after gastrectomy. The objective of this study was to determine survival benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy and risk factors for tumor recurrence in gastric cancer patients with pT1N1.Methods: Between 1996 and 2010, 510 patients who underwent curative resection for pT1N1 gastric cancer at three institutes were divided into two groups: adjuvant chemotherapy group (N = 150) and surgery-only group (N = 360). Disease-free survival rates and risk factors for tumor recurrence were analyzed.Results: During the median follow-up of 78 months, 7.5% of patients experienced tumor recurrence (7.3% in adjuvant chemotherapy group and 7.5% in surgery-only group). The 5-year disease-free survival rate was 91.8% in the adjuvant chemotherapy group and 94.6% in the surgery-only group without significant difference between the two. In univariate analysis, older age (>65 years), male gender, body mass index <25 kg/m2, elevated gross type, and differentiated histology were associated with tumor recurrence. Multivariate analysis showed that advanced age and male gender were independent risk factors for tumor recurrence. In addition, adjuvant chemotherapy showed no benefitial effect on tumor recurrence in pT1N1 gastric cancer.Conclusions: Adjuvant chemotherapy did not show any oncologically benefitial effect on tumor recurrence, it might be unnecessary for pT1N1 gastric cancer after curative surgery. Background: M1 gastric cancer has a poor oncologic outcome with a median survival of less than 1 year despite aggressive chemotherapy. Recent trials include chemotherapy combined non-curative gastrectomy. This study evaluated the chemoresponse after non-curative gastrectomy in M1 gastric cancer and the survival benefit. Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2010, 660 patients received chemotherapy for gastric cancer at the Department of Hemato-Oncology, Dongsan Medical Center, Keimyung University School of Medicine, Daegu, Korea. Data was collected retrospectively from the medical records. Patients who received preoperative or adjuvant chemotherapy, who underwent other surgeries like gastrojejunal bypass or exploratory laparotomy, who died within 3 months due to seriously advanced gastric cancer, who were lost tofollow-up, or whose medical records were unsuitable for data collection were excluded. The remaining 101 patients had received chemotherapy only (CTx group, n = 76) or chemotherapy after non-curative gastrectomy (NCG + CTx group, n = 25). Clinicopathologic characteristics, chemoresponse, and overall survival were compared between the two groups. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups in clinicopathologic characteristics including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), comorbidity, histologic differentiation, tumor location, clinical T stage, and initial site of distant metastasis. Chemoresponse was checked on two separate occasions from the initiation of chemotherapy: first chemotherapy regimen and until the third regimen change. The NCG + CTx group showed more favorable chemoresponse than the CTx group in both checks (60% and 72% vs. 18.4% and 23.7%). The NCG + CTx group showed longer overall survival than the CTx group (26 vs. 11 months). Gastrointestinal (GI) mucormycosis is a rare and life-threatening invasive fungal infection. GI mucormycosis occur in all parts of the alimentary tract, with the stomach being the most common site. Diabetes mellitus and other types of conditions associated with immunodeficiency, including hematologic malignancies, solid organ transplantation and glucocorticoid therapy, are risk factors for GI mucormycosis. There are few studies reporting cases of gastric mucormycosis in patients with liver cirrhosis, and even fewer reporting the successful treatment of invasive gastric mucormycosis in a patient with liver cirrhosis. This study presents a case of invasive gastric mucormycosis in a patient with liver cirrhosis, which was treated successfully by prompt diagnosis, metabolic support, surgical debridement of involved tissues and antifungal therapy. Erwinia amylovora is a member of the harpin proteins that induces pathogen resistance and hypersensitive cell death in plants. To obtain tobacco plants displaying a hypersensitive response, the hrpN gene from Erwinia amylovora was cloned into vector pMJC-GB under the control of the rice cytochrome promoter and transfected into tobacco. Southern hybridization with a hrpN probe revealed that the gene was present in one copy in the transgenic plants. In addition, hrpN transcripts could be detected in transgenic plants but not in wild-type tobacco. The wild type gave 75 products in RAPD analysis with 12 primers while the transgenic plants gave 73, suggesting that hrpN gene had been integrated into the transgenic plant genomic DNA. The distribution of cell cycle phases in the wild type and transgenic plants was G0-G1: 71.25%, G2-M: 20.41%, S: 8.33%, while in transgenic plant was G0-G1: 54.95%, G2-M: 43.82%, S: 10.23%. The sizes of stomata and guard cells on transgenic leaves were similar to those of the wild type, but the epidermal cells were clearly smaller. The growing interest in Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) prediction data across different industries underscores its potential use in comprehending weather patterns, extreme conditions, and important sectors such as agriculture and energy management. However, concerns about its accuracy have been raised. Furthermore, enhancing the precision of rainfall predictions remains challenging in S2S forecasts. This study enhanced the sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) prediction skills for precipitation amount and occurrence over the East Asian region by employing deep learning-based post-processing techniques. We utilized a modified U-Net architecture that wraps all its convolutional layers with TimeDistributed layers as a deep learning model. For the training datasets, the precipitation prediction data of six S2S climate models and their multi-model ensemble (MME) were constructed, and the daily precipitation occurrence was obtained from the three thresholds values, 0 % of the daily precipitation for no-rain events, 67 % for heavy-rain. Based on the precipitation amount prediction skills of the six climate models, deep learning-based post-processing outperformed post-processing using multiple linear regression (MLR) in the lead times of weeks 2–4. The prediction accuracy of precipitation occurrence with MLR-based post-processing did not significantly improve, whereas deep learning-based post-processing enhanced the prediction accuracy in the total lead times, demonstrating superiority over MLR. We enhanced the prediction accuracy in forecasting the amount and occurrence of precipitation in individual climate models using deep learning-based post-processing.

The carotenoid-biofortified (PAC) rice was developed and confirmed to synthesis carotenoids (zeaxanthin, α-carotene and β-carotene) in rice endosperm. For biosafety assessment of PAC rice, the stability of the insert genes in carotenoidbiofortified rice at genomic and protein expression level through different generations (T3~T6) was studied. Southern blot analysis confirmed that the multi-generation stability of the genes : PAC gene (CrtI and Psy), promoters (35S and Glb), terminators (NOS and PinII), selectable marker (bar) and MAR gene. It was also confirmed that the backbone DNA containing antibacterial gene (aadA) was not present in PAC rice. Immuno-strip assay (PAT) showed that the bar gene was stably expressed through generations. HPLC analysis confirmed that carotenoids were consistently detected through T3~T6 generations. Background Parkinson’s disease is the second most common degenerative brain disease after Alzheimer’s disease. This study reviewed clinical practice of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for Parkinson’s disease to assess the future direction of these treatments. Methods The literature search used 5 Korean Internet databases. The search terms were “Parkinson’s disease.” and “Parkinson (Korean).” 36 papers were selected: 27 case reports, 2 respropective studies, 3 uncontrolled clinical trials, 3 randomized controlled trial, 1 non-randomized controlled trial. Results Filiform needles were used in most of studies. Pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture, and auricular acupuncture therapy were also used in combination with Filiform needles. 2. The most commonly used basic acupoints for Parkinson’s disease was Saamchimbeop. The most commonly used form of pharmacopuncture involved Bee-venom. Conclusions It is expected that treatment of Parkinson’s disease with a variety of acupuncture and moxibustion therapies will continue to be studied, in addition to treatments that utilize existing Filiform needle treatments in clinical practice.

Kohlrabi is considered an important dietary vegetable worldwide. In this study, we investigated the growth and accumulation of phenolic compounds (PCs) and glucosinolates in sprouts of pale green and purple kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) in response to light and dark conditions. Pale green kohlrabi presented high fresh weight and root length irrespective of light treatment, whereas under dark conditions, it presented higher fresh weight and shoot length than purple kohlrabi. In contrast, the root length of both kohlrabies increased markedly under light conditions compared to that under dark conditions. Thirteen PCs and eight glucosinolates were detected and quantified in 10-day-old pale green and purple kohlrabies. In both kohlrabies, the individual and total phenolic levels were much higher under the light treatment than under the dark treatment. Under light and dark conditions, the total phenolic content was 6362.13 and 5475.04 µg/g dry weight in the pale green kohlrabi, respectively, whereas in the purple kohlrabi, it was 10,115.76 and 9361.74 µg/g dry weight, respectively. Dark conditions favored higher accumulation of glucosinolates than light conditions. Progoitrin, neoglucobrassicin, glucoerucin, and 4-methoxyglucobrassicin were the predominant glucosinolates in both kohlrabies and were present in much higher amounts in the pale green kohlrabi. In pale green kohlrabi under dark conditions, the total glucosinolates content was 4.75 and 2.62 times higher than that of the purple kohlrabi under light and dark conditions, respectively. Among individual glucosinolates, in the pale green kohlrabi under the dark condition, progoitrin was found to have the highest content, which was 90.28 and 54.51 times higher than that in the purple kohlrabi under light and dark conditions, respectively. These results show that the phenolic and glucosinolates levels varied widely, and these variations between the two types of kohlrabi under both light and dark conditions were significant. Our findings suggest that light and dark conditions enhance the accumulation of PCs and glucosinolates, respectively, during the development of kohlrabi seedlings.

Various downscaling approaches have been developed to overcome the limitation of the coarse spatial resolution of general circulation models (GCMs). Such techniques can be grouped into two approaches of dynamical and statistical downscaling. In this study, we investigated the performances of different downscaling methods, focusing on East Asian summer monsoon precipitation to obtain more finely resolved and value added datasets. The dynamical downscaling was conducted by the Regional Model Program (RMP) of the Global/Regional Integrated Model system (GRIMs), while the statistical downscaling was performed through coupled pattern-based simple linear regression. The dynamical downscaling resulted in a better representation of the spatial distribution and long-term trend than the GCM produced; however, it tended to overestimate precipitation over East Asia. In contrast, the application of the statistical downscaling resulted in a bias in the amount of precipitation, due to low variance that is inherent in regression-based downscaling. A combination of dynamical and statistical downscaling produced the best results in time and space. This study provides a guideline for determining the most effective and robust downscaling method in the hydrometeorological applications, which are quite sensitive to the accuracy of downscaled precipitation.

A reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism (RT-PCR/RFLP) was employed successfully for detection and identification of Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) strains. A primer pair amplifying a 1,385-bp fragment of the cylindrical inclusion (CI) coding region was used for RT-PCR and the RFLP profiles of the RT-PCR products were compared after restriction digestion with RsaI, EcoRI, or AccI restriction endonucleases. These enzymes were chosen based on the nucleotide sequences of SMV strains G2, G5, G5H, G7, and G7H in the CI coding region. These five strains, as well as seedborne SMV isolates from local soybean cultivars, could be differentiated by RT-PCR/RFLP analysis. The results correlated well with strain identification by symptom phenotypes produced on differential cultivars inoculated with strains and isolates. The sensitivity of RT-PCR enabled detection of SMV from plants with necrotic symptoms in which the number of virus particles was too low to be detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
