163. Souvenirs in tourism studies: A bibliometric retrospective and future research agenda

Abstract

Purpose – Souvenir research in tourism research has steadily increased, but to date no metric analysis has been published that assesses the main issues addressed to guide and support new research. Design – This study fills this gap through an updated bibliometric review of 282 articles identified in the SCOPUS/WOS databases and an analysis of the future research agenda. Methodology – The PRISMA method and VoSViewer software for a systematic review was applied. Approach – This process allowed research areas identification identify research and it determined the relationships between them, drawing the paths that this scientific subject has taken. Findings – Results reveal a cross-citation-based cluster formation suggesting six main research themes: authenticity; shopping; symbolic value; satisfaction with shopping/ purchase; destination image; tourist experience. Additionally, a ‘future research agenda’ is proposed, organized into five general research pillars on the topic: Food consumption trends, Impacts, Souvenir consumption and value in context, Destination experience, and Technology impact. Originality of the research – Findings are expected to help researchers in the field to build their contributions on existing relevant academic advances, thereby better integrating their efforts into a theory of souvenir research that is still forming and consolidating, including through the Providing promising topics and avenues for future research.

171. Blood Flow Restriction Attenuates Muscle Damage in Resistance Exercise Performed Until Concentric Muscle Failure

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate whether blood flow restriction (BFR) can prevent exercise-induced muscle damage in resistance exercise (RE) performed until concentric muscle failure (CMF). Twenty healthy volunteers (25 ± 4 years, 80.4 ± 11.8 kg, 175 ± 8 cm) performed three sets of unilateral biceps curl exercise (40% of 1RM) with (RE + BFR) and without (RE) BFR until CMF. A third condition was to perform the same number of repetitions as RE + BFR without using BFR (matched). Performing fewer repetitions, RE + BFR caused muscle fatigue post-exercise as high as that caused by RE. In addition, the range of motion, upper arm circumference, pressure pain threshold, and maximal voluntary contraction were immediately affected by our exercise protocol with BFR, returning rapidly to basal values within 24 h, while in RE, muscle damage markers remained elevated until 48 h post-exercise. The same results were observed concerning serum creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activity. Thus, BFR + RE performed until CMF attenuated muscle damage following similar metabolic stress to RE alone performed until CMF, with less work volume.

Abstract

[EN] A simple commission: a house with four bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a swimming pool and a barbecue. The plot is complex, immeasurable, without references, without alignments, no directions. From the trail that leaves the asphalt road towards the forest, we follow the topography that descends towards the river and jump between the rolling stones until we find a furrow marked by the passage of rainwater. It is the perfect deployment - far enough out of the way and placed between two stable heights. A sculpted concrete volume with thin and thick patterns hides the river by imposing its opaque horizontality. A framework for each different dimension of a rough topography: the river, the hill, the quarry. A concrete foot is a staircase and structural base; support that divides the private and public space of the house. Approaching us, an elongated entrance introduces us to a long corridor that meticulously frames the rocky massifs in a small reading area. The room is long, facing the green of the land, with a large window that frames the Tâmega river and the dips into the pool. Materiality is a return to this very place; the concrete faces of the façade, the veins of the stereotomy should be stone veins made on site, with mortar and pine wood planks., [ES] Un encargo sencillo: una casa de cuatro dormitorios, salón, cocina, piscina y barbacoa. La parcela es compleja, inmedible, sin referencias, sin alineaciones, sin direcciones. Desde el sendero que sale de la carretera asfaltada hacia el bosque, se sigue la topografía que desciende hacia el río; y se sobrepasan los cantos rodados hasta encontrar un surco marcado por el paso del agua de lluvia. Es el despliegue perfecto: lo suficientemente apartado y colocado entre dos alturas estables. Un volumen de hormigón esculpido con tramas finas y gruesas oculta el río e imponiendo su horizontalidad opaca. Un marco para cada una de las dimensiones de una topografía rugosa: el río, el cerro, la cantera. Un apoyo de hormigón hace de escalera y base estructural; soporte que divide el espacio público y privado de la casa. Cerca, una entrada alargada da paso a un largo pasillo que enmarca minuciosamente los macizos rocosos en una pequeña zona de lectura. La estancia es alargada, orientada al verde del terreno, con un gran ventanal que enmarca el río Támega y las pendientes hasta la piscina. La materialidad es un regreso a este mismo lugar: los paramentos de hormigón de la fachada, las vetas de la estereotomía, las cuales deben ser vetas de piedra realizadas en obra, con mortero y tablones de madera de pino.

[EN] A very unsophisticated renovation of an existent agricultural structure. A little granite masonry house, painted in white, where the farm s Donkey used to sleep. An add-on portico for a living room sustained by a central concrete pillar which provides a pause in the 180º panoramic view. The section of the four sided ceramic tile roof serves as a new shelter: only bones and glass. A white skeleton meets the old body: only bones and glass. Yellow aluminium to give ornament to the archaic constructive solution. The cows, the goats and sheep still live alongside dogs and chicken, underneath the new shelter., [ES] Una renovación poco sofisticada de una estructura agrícola existente. Una casita de sillería de granito, pintada de blanco, donde dormía el burro de la finca. Un pórtico ampliado para una sala de estar, sostenido por un pilar central de hormigón que proporciona una pausa en la vista panorámica de 180º. La sección de la cubierta de teja cerámica a cuatro aguas sirve de nuevo refugio: solo huesos y vidrio. El esqueleto blanco se encuentra con el cuerpo preexistente: solo huesos y vidrio. Aluminio amarillo para adornar la solución constructiva arcaica. Bajo del nuevo refugio, las vacas, las cabras y las ovejas aún viven junto a los perros y las gallinas.

175. Habitual coffee drinkers display a distinct pattern of brain functional connectivity

Abstract

Coffee is the most widely consumed source of caffeine worldwide, partly due to the psychoactive effects of this methylxanthine. Interestingly, the effects of its chronic consumption on the brain’s intrinsic functional networks are still largely unknown. This study provides the first extended characterization of the effects of chronic coffee consumption on human brain networks. Subjects were recruited and divided into two groups: habitual coffee drinkers (CD) and non-coffee drinkers (NCD). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was acquired in these volunteers who were also assessed regarding stress, anxiety, and depression scores. In the neuroimaging evaluation, the CD group showed decreased functional connectivity in the somatosensory and limbic networks during resting state as assessed with independent component analysis. The CD group also showed decreased functional connectivity in a network comprising subcortical and posterior brain regions associated with somatosensory, motor, and emotional processing as assessed with network-based statistics; moreover, CD displayed longer lifetime of a functional network involving subcortical regions, the visual network and the cerebellum. Importantly, all these differences were dependent on the frequency of caffeine consumption, and were reproduced after NCD drank coffee. CD showed higher stress levels than NCD, and although no other group effects were observed in this psychological assessment, increased frequency of caffeine consumption was also associated with increased anxiety in males. In conclusion, higher consumption of coffee and caffeinated products has an impact in brain functional connectivity at rest with implications in emotionality, alertness, and readiness to action.

Abstract

Tourism business models have used several technologies in their development, such as Virtual Reality (VR). Previous studies show that VR allows tourism organizations to promote new types of relationships between tourists and destinations, to enhance the appeal and memorability of tourist experiences and to diversify consumption patterns, which could also be interesting for dealing with sustainability issues, such as seasonal demand of destinations or activities in wine tourism. Thus, we propose a conceptual model to analyze the influence of memorable tourism experiences on wine tourists' future intentions after a VR experience, providing additional details on the research methodology to empirically test the conceptual model. Innovation in business models with VR to promote new relationships with destinations or activities and diversify tourists' consumption patterns could be interesting to address seasonal activities, such as the grape harvest or grape-treading, which are not continuously available for tourist observation/participation, despite their high appeal. On the other hand, the results could contribute to wine and other kinds of tourism, conditioned by mobility issues such as restrictions on movements or personal interaction, due to health crises or personal constraints, increasing these tourism experiences' accessibility also in times of unavailability. Abstract

Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in communication and social interaction, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, and sensory alterations, with auditory hypersensitivity being one of the most commonly reported sensory-perceptual abnormalities. Several candidate genes for involvement in this disorder have emerged from patient studies, including SHANK3, a gene that encodes a protein (SHANK3) in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. Previous work has shown that mutant mice carrying a human ASD mutation in the Shank3 gene (InsG3680) exhibit repetitive behaviors and social interaction deficits, indicating important construct and face validity for this genotype as an animal model of ASD. Methods: To further address whether these mice also present auditory sensory-perceptual alterations, we developed a novel behavioral test in which mice can choose between different soundscapes. Results: Our results reveal that, in comparison to wild-type mice, Shank3 mutants display a strong behavioral preference toward silent regions of the arena. Discussion: These data suggest that Shank3-mutant mice might express an auditory hypersensitivity phenotype, further adding to the face validity of this genotype as an animal model of ASD. Abstract

This study was initiated in a time of unprecedented uncertainty, as lecturers and educational institutions across the world tried to manage the move to online education. It started with lecturers’ perspectives of their performance during the COVID-19 pandemic to identify innovative teaching strategies beyond the priority of emergency teaching. The main goal was to identify the occurrence of more permanent changes in higher education after the pandemic. The research was based on a qualitative approach where faculty members were interviewed about their activities before, during and after lockdown periods. Data collected was analysed with the help of algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence. Ultimately, it was possible to record and evaluate practical solutions related to hybrid learning in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, leading to recommendations for stakeholders in Higher Education. info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersion
