Abstract

Species range expansions and (re)colonization of landscapes variously dominated by humans occur on a global scale. Understanding such range enlargements and subsequent changes in the composition of ecological communities is important for conservation management, and the golden jackal (Canis aureus) can be considered a model species for regional and continental range expansion. Although this mesopredator has been known from the Adriatic Coast of southeastern Europe for over 500 years, the species is a recent arrival further north, including in Slovenia where jackals were first confirmed in the 1950s. Research from eastern Italy found jackals with ancestry from the Dalmatian region on the Adriatic Coast and the Pannonian region further east. We predicted similar ancestry for Slovenian jackals, and examined samples from Croatia, including Dalmatia and interior regions, Serbia, Hungary, and Slovenia with 25 microsatellite markers to determine population genetic structure. We detected two distinct genetic clusters, representing the Dalmatian and Balkan-Pannonian (Pannonian) jackal populations (F$_{ST}$ = 0.157, 95% CI: 0.112–0.209). Contrary to expectations, only few individuals in Slovenia exhibited signs of Dalmatian ancestry, and none appeared to be direct immigrants. Some results suggested a third cluster centered in northern Hungary. These divergent profiles might indicate immigration from outside the study area, and samples from regions further east are required for additional resolution. Based on our results, we hypothesize that Dalmatia has not been a substantial source for recent range expansion of the species, which has likely occurred from the east. Further investigation can help resolve the ancestry and current distribution of the Dalmatian and Pannonian populations, and the ecological relationships resulting from progressively overlapping distributions of canid species. Finally, genomic research could illuminate whether genetic variants from eastern areas might have facilitated jackal expansion into regions characterized by a colder climate, the presence of snow, and extensive forest cover habitats seemingly avoided by the jackals occupying the Adriatic Coast and surrounding areas in southeastern Europe.

Abstract

Shaping cellulose into functional materials entered a new era with the introduction of ionic liquids as novel, green solvents about 20 years ago. As non-volatile solvents with high thermal and chemical stability, ionic liquids can provide an environmentally more benign tunable platform for cellulose processing, compared to existing technologies. The past decades have seen fruitful efforts devoted to the development of materials based on ionic liquid/cellulose processing systems. In this review we discuss the experiences gained, and highlight the emerging applications. In particular, coatings and thin film applications for structural materials (e.g., for packaging), thin film filtration membranes, immobilisation of enzymes, and catalytically active nanoparticles, separator membranes and conductive composites for energy storage and other electronics applications, cellulose/biopolymer green biocomposites, cellulose-based ionogels, hydrogels and aerogels, and cellulose-based or composite fibres will be discussed in detail. We will also take a critical look at the perspectives of this field. The use of a certain grade of technical cellulose, and the purity of the prepared materials should be more carefully justified in the future, as they have an influence not only on the properties of the fabricated material, but also on the economics of the process. Furthermore, to make ionic liquids truly green solvents, and competitive alternatives to existing technologies, more studies are needed on recyclability after material fabrication, and on ways to minimise the energy consumption of such processes, among other issues. Abstract

Jenő Sebestyén, professor of systematic theology from Budapest, is often portrayed as the founding father of historical Calvinism in Hungary. The theological movement exhibits clearly a Dutch impact. He is often seen as a Kuyperian scholar who disseminated the famous Dutch theologian and churchman's idea amongst Hungarian Reformed people. The current paper seeks to examine whether this statement is true in regard to his systematic theological thinking. By performing a statistical examination of the references found in his magnum opus, Református Dogmatika [Reformed Dogmatics], a surprising discovery was made. Herman Bavinck was cited more than Abraham Kuyper. Besides, it is also proved that other Dutch theologians, such as Jan Jacob van Oosterzee and Eskelhoff Gravemeyer, not to mention Louis Berkhof, also made an impact on the formation of idea about Reformed doctrine. Therefore, as far as his book on dogmatics is concerned, the research shows a far more nuanced picture of the impact made on him. Abstract

This paper presents the results of research into the impact of information technology (IT) on individual and organizational performances in companies in Serbia: job satisfaction (JS), communication satisfaction (CS), organizational commitment (OCM), organizational trust (ITW), organizational learning (OL) and financial performance (FP). The data were obtained from a questionnaire completed by N = 380 middle managers from 102 companies in Serbia. The methods used for statistical data processing were: descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and the t-test. The main conclusions of the study are: 1. Information technology items in companies in Serbia are slightly above average values. 2. The level of information technology in the company is an indicator of the level of organizational performance in the company. 3. The level of information technology in the company has direct and indirect positive impacts on the level of a number of organizational performances in the company.

Abstract

Der Beitrag geht dem Themenkomplex Krankheit-Leiden-Schmerz bei Hermann Hesse nach, indem er einen Überblick über einschlägige Texte des Autors bietet. Gefragt wird nach Relationen zwischen Krankheit, Genie und Kunst in Prosatexten wie Taedium vitae, Gertrud, Kurgast oder Der Steppenwolf teils in Bezug auf Hesses Biographie, teils auf zeitgenössische Diskurse über (psychische) Krankheit oder Heilung, wie sie etwa bei Nietzsche oder Freud vorgeprägt waren. Es werden auch Verbindungslinien zwischen Hesses Auffassung der Krankheit als psychogenen Phänomens und seinem Kunstverständnis verfolgt. Schließlich werden die von Hesse etwa im Kurgast oder im Steppenwolf dargestellten psycho-physiologischen Heilungsprozesse ins Auge gefasst., Rad istražuje međusobno povezane teme bolesti, patnje i boli u nekoliko pripovjednih tekstova Hermanna Hessea, poput Taedium vitae, Gertrude, Gosta u toplicama i Stepskog vuka. Analiza se bavi odnosom bolesti, genijalnosti i umjetnosti, djelomično biografskim, a djelomično utemeljenim na suvremenim diskursima o (psihogenim) bolestima i ozdravljenju, kako ih donose Nietzsche i Freud. Isto tako, rad razotkriva poveznice između Hesseova koncepta bolesti kao psihogenog fenomena te njegovog poimanja umjetnosti. U konačnici, rad razmatra psihološke i fiziološke procese ozdravljenja opisane u Gostu u toplicama i Stepskom vuku., The paper examines the interrelated topics of illness, suffering, and pain in several narrative texts by Hermann Hesse, such as Taedium vitae, Gertrud, A Guest at the Spa, and The Steppenwolf. The analysis focuses on the relation between illness, geniality, and art, partly biographical, partly based on contemporary discourses on (psychogenic) illness and healing, as they were prefigured in Nietzsche and Freud. The paper also reveals connections between Hesse’s concept of illness as a psychogenic phenomenon and his understanding of art. Finally, psychologic and physiological processes of healing as described in A Guest at the Spa or The Steppenwolf are also considered.
