We study experimentally light localization at phase-slip waveguides and at the intersection of phase-slips in a two-dimensional (2D) square photonic lattice. We report on the experimental realization of an optical analogue of a quantum geometric potential for light wave packets constrained on thin dielectric guiding layers fabricated in silica by the femtosecond laser writing technology. We further demonstrate the optical version of a topological crystal, with the observation of Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling of purely geometric nature.

We report on the experimental observation of reduced light energy transport and disorder-induced localization close to a boundary of a truncated one-dimensional (1D) disordered photonic lattice. We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional surface solitons residing at the interface between a homogeneous square lattice and a superlattice that consists of alternating "deep" and "shallow" waveguides. By exciting single waveguides in the first row of the superlattice, we show that solitons centered on deep sites require much lower powers than their respective counterparts centered on shallow sites. Despite the fact that the average refractive index of the superlattice waveguides is equal to the refractive index of the homogeneous lattice, the interface results in clearly asymmetric output patterns., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Physical Review A

We use compressed sensing to demonstrate theoretically the reconstruction of sub-wavelength features from measured far-field, and provide experimental proof-of-concept. The methods can be applied to non-optical microscopes, provided the information is sparse.

We observe experimentally two-dimensional solitons in superlattices comprising alternating deep and shallow waveguides fabricated via the femtosecond laser direct writing technique. We address two-dimensional waveguide arrays where light tunneling into neighboring waveguides may be effectively suppressed by out-of-phase harmonic modulation of the refractive index in neighboring waveguides at suitable frequencies. We report the observation of nonlinearity-induced broadening of resonances in dynamically modulated directional couplers. When the refractive index of the guiding channels in the coupler is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in two channels, coupling can be completely inhibited at resonant modulation frequencies. We observe that nonlinearity broadens such resonances and that localization can be achieved even in detuned systems at power levels well below those required in unmodulated couplers., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Optics Letters

We report the first experimental observation of vector surface solitons, which form at the edge and in the corner of two-dimensional laser-written waveguide arrays. These elliptically polarized vector states are composed of two orthogonally polarized components. They exist only above a power threshold and bifurcate from scalar surface solitons. We report the observation of almost perfect light tunneling inhibition at the edge and inside laser-written waveguide arrays due to band collapse. When the refractive index of the guiding channels is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in adjacent guides, light is trapped in the excited waveguide over a long distance due to resonances. We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional solitons located in a defect channel at the surface of a hexagonal waveguide array. The threshold power for the excitation of defect surface solitons existing due to total internal reflection grows with decrease of the refractive index in negative defects and vanishes for sufficiently strong positive defects. We reveal and observe experimentally significant modifications undertaken by discrete solitons in waveguide lattices upon the continuous transformation of the lattice structure from one-dimensional to two-dimensional. We report the observation of surface solitons in chirped semi-infinite waveguide arrays whose waveguides exhibit exponentially decreasing refractive indices. We address the properties of two-dimensional surface solitons supported by the interface of a waveguide array whose nonlinearity is periodically modulated. We study propagation of light in nonlinear diffraction-managed photonic lattices created with arrays of periodically-curved coupled optical waveguides which were fabricated using femtosecond laser writing in silica glass, and titanium indiffusion in LiNbO3 crystals. We identify different regimes of the nonlinear propagation of light beams depending on the input power, and present the first experimental observation of diffraction-managed solitons, which are formed as a result of the interplay between the engineered beam diffraction and nonlinear self-focusing or defocusing. We observe that in self-collimating structures where linear diffraction is suppressed, a novel regime of nonlinear beam diffusion takes place at the intermediate powers before the lattice soliton is formed at higher powers.

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional surface waves localized at the edge or in the corner of femtosecond laser-written waveguide arrays in fused silica.
