The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range, from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution, high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12 keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the 40-600 keV band. We herein present three oldest old patients with advanced oral cancer for whom low-dose S-1 treatment was effective and improved QOL. The first patient is a 90-year-old female with cancer of the maxilla(T4N0Mx). Because of her generally poor condition, her family did not desire radical therapy. S-1(40mg/m2)was administered for 2 weeks followed by a 1-week interval. Because of a partial response without serious side effects, we increased the dose of S-1 to 50mg/m2. The tumor currently shows a tendency toward reduction. The second patient is a 96-year-old female with cancer of the mandible(T4N0Mx). Because of her old age, her family desired palliative therapy. S-1(40mg/m2)was administered for 2 weeks followed by a 1-week interval. A complete response was obtained at the end of the second course. There has been no recurrence. The third patient is a 94-year-old female with cancer of the maxilla(T3N0M0). Her family selected palliative therapy. S-1(50mg/m2)was administered for 2 weeks followed by a 1-week interval. The tumor size decreased after administration of S-1, without serious side effects. However, the tumor increased after the end of the fifth course. Considering the patient's condition, S-1 administration was discontinued at the end of the eighth course. S-1 is considered to be an effective and safe treatment for the maintenance or improvement of the QOL of old and oldest old patients with advanced oral cancer.

“Fishy aftertaste” is sometimes perceived in wine consumed with seafood. Iron in wine has been reported to be a key compound that produces fishy aftertaste. However, cost-effective methods to remove iron from wine have not been developed. Here, we describe a cost-effective and safe iron adsorbent consisting of alcohol-treated yeast (ATY) cells based on the observation that nonviable cells adsorbed iron after completion of fermentation. Treatment of cells with more than 40% (v/v) ethanol killed them without compromising their ability to adsorb iron. Drying the ATY cells did not reduce iron adsorption. Use of ATY cells together with phytic acid had a synergistic effect on iron removal. We term this means of removing iron the “ATY–PA” method. Sensory analysis indicated that fishy aftertaste in wine-seafood pairings was not perceived if the wine had been pretreated with both ATY cells and phytic acid.

We derived radial abundance profiles of O, Mg, Si, S and Fe in the intracluster medium (ICM) of several clusters and groups of galaxies up to about 0.3 r180 with Suzaku and those of Fe in 28 nearby brightest clusters of galaxies up to 0.3-0.5 r180 with XMM. Within 0.05 r180, Fe abundance scatters from 0.5 to 1 solar. The scatter may be caused by a difference in recent metal supplies with supernovae Ia and stellar mass loss from cD galaxies. In these regions and also in ISM in giant elliptical galaxies, the abundance patterns of O, Mg, Si, S and Fe are close to the solar ratio adopting the new solar abundance defined by Lodders [1]. At 0.1-0.5 r180, relaxed clusters with a cD galaxy at their X-ray peak have flat Fe abundance profiles at 0.4-0.5 solar, with a small scatter. In these clusters, the ratio of Fe mass in the ICM to the light from galaxies have similar profiles, and increases toward outer regions. In addition, several systems show a hint of enhancement of O/Fe and Mg/Fe ratios. These results indicate that the metal-enrichment process in these clusters has been universal, and a significant amount of Fe is synthesized at a very early stage in cluster formation. Scatter in the metal-mass-to-light ratios and similarity in the abundances in the ICM of groups and clusters of galaxies also indicate early metal synthesis.

X-ray studies of velocity structures of the intracluster medium is one of the primary goals for future X-ray missions. High resolution spectroscopies will provide measurements of energy distributions not only in thermal but also in kinematic forms. We present Suzaku results on gas bulk motions in a X-ray bright merging cluster, Abell 2256. We have detected a motion of a sub component with a velocity of about 1500 km s−1 for the first time by X-ray.

To clarify the mechanism of glucose intolerance induced by FK506, a novel immunosuppressant, 5 or 10 mg/kg/day of FK506 was dosed orally to rats for 2 weeks, and 125I-insulin binding to the erythrocytes, plasma glucose and insulin levels, and pancreatic insulin content were examined. Insulin binding to the erythrocytes of rat dosed with FK506 was similar to that to erythrocytes of the placebo control; Scatchard analysis confirmed that FK506 did not cause damage to the insulin receptor of the erythrocytes. Contrarily, FK506 caused a clear decrease of pancreatic insulin content as well as a slight decrease of plasma insulin level. The results suggest that the glucose intolerance induced by FK506 is associated with a decrease of insulin secretion, but is not associated with impairment of the insulin receptor.

Previous studies have reported that the signal attenuation of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging for tumor tissues displays a non-monoexponential biexponential decay, and the apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) can be divided into a fast and slow diffusion component by using a simple biexponential decay model. The purpose of this study is to examine the non-monoexponential character of the diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging signal attenuations of breast cancers, estimate the fast and slow diffusion components, and compare them with the extra- and intracellular component information obtained from the pathological specimens. Twenty-two subjects having breast cancers underwent diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging using six b-values up to 3500 s/mm(2) and the signal attenuations were analyzed using the biexponential function. The derived slow component fraction correlated with the cellular fraction and the ADCs converged to 0.2-0.3 × 10(-3) mm(2) /s for the higher cellular fractions. The ADCs of the fast component ranged from 1.3 to 3.9 × 10(-3) mm(2) /s and showed no correlation with the extracellular components. This result suggests that the main reason for the decreasing ADC of a breast tumor is the decreasing fraction of the fast component and the increasing fraction of the slow component having a low ADC rather than the decreasing ADC of the fast component by the restricted water diffusion in the reduced extracellular spaces.

The results from Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell2256 are presented. This cluster is a prototypical and well-studied merging system, exhibiting substructures both in the X-ray surface brightness and in the radial velocity distribution of member galaxies. There are main and sub components separating by 3'.5 in the sky and by about 2000 km s$^{-1}$ in radial velocity peaks of member galaxies. In order to measure Doppler shifts of iron K-shell lines from the two gas components by the Suzaku XIS, the energy scale of the instrument was evaluated carefully and found to be calibrated well. A significant shift of the radial velocity of the sub component gas with respect to that of the main cluster was detected. All three XIS sensors show the shift independently and consistently among the three. The difference is found to be 1500 $\pm 300$ (statistical) $\pm 300$ (systematic) km s$^{-1}$. The X-ray determined absolute redshifts of and hence the difference between the main and sub components are consistent with those of member galaxies in optical. The observation indicates robustly that the X-ray emitting gas is moving together with galaxies as a substructure within the cluster. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values are calculated by using signal intensity in diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) with two or more different b-value. Therefore, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of DWI with higher b-value may have a big influence on the measured ADC value. We examined the influence of the imaging parameters on the calculated ADC values. The SNR of DWI increased by using a larger voxel size, by means of a decreased number of matrix, an increased slice thickness, and an increased field of view (FOV). However, when the number of excitations was increased to improve the SNR of DWI, the signal intensity of background noise was observed to be slightly increased. It was suggested that the consistency of measured ADC was not preserved when the signal of the DWIs with higher b-value dropped close to the noise level.

ASTRO-H covers very wide energy range from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. ASTRO-H allows a combination of wide band X-ray spectroscopy (5-80 keV) provided by multilayer coating, focusing hard X-ray mirrors and hard X-ray imaging detectors, and high energy-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (0.3-12 keV) provided by thin-foil X-ray optics and a micro-calorimeter array. The mission will also carry an X-ray CCD camera as a focal plane detector for a soft X-ray telescope (0.4-12 keV) and a non-focusing soft gamma-ray detector (40-600 keV) . The micro-calorimeter system is developed by an international collaboration led by ISAS/JAXA and NASA. Metabolomics - the comprehensive analysis of metabolites - was recently used to classify yeast mutants with no overt phenotype using raw data as metabolic fingerprints or footprints. In this study, we demonstrate the estimation of a complicated phenotype, longevity, and semi-rational screening for relevant mutants using metabolic profiles as strain-specific fingerprints. The fingerprints used in our experiments are profiled data consisting of individually identified and quantified metabolites rather than raw spectrum data. We chose yeast replicative lifespan as a model phenotype. Several yeast mutants that affect lifespan were selected for analysis, and they were subjected to metabolic profiling using mass spectrometry. Fingerprinting based on the profiles revealed a correlation between lifespan and metabolic profile. Amino acids and nucleotide derivatives were the main contributors to this correlation. Furthermore, we established a multivariate model to predict lifespan from a metabolic profile. The model facilitated the identification of putative longevity mutants. This work represents a novel approach to evaluate and screen complicated and quantitative phenotype by means of metabolomics.

The trityl tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate [TrB(C6F5)4] catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of various disaccharides was successfully carried out by treating a new 2-O-acyl-protected glycosyl donor, 3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-2-O-p-toluoyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl phenylcarbonate, with several glycosyl acceptors, thioglycosides, affording the corresponding disaccharides in high yields.

New highly effective promoter system for the glycosylation of thioglycoside, the combined use of stoichiometric amount of either N-iodosuccinimide or N-bromosuccinimide and a catalytic amount of TrB(C6F5)4, was developed and was successfully applied to the one-pot sequential synthesis of trisaccharides. In the first glycosylation step, 3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-2-O-p-toluoyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl phenylcarbonate was treated with thioglycosides in the presence of a catalytic amount of TrB(C6F5)4 alone, and the following glycosylation with methyl α-D-glycosides was carried out by further addition of either N-iodosuccinimide or N-bromosuccinimide to the initially resulted reaction mixture to afford the corresponding trisaccharides in one-pot manner.

Minichromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins act as the origin licensing machinery that regulates initiation of DNA replication. Geminin is a licensing repressor and prevents reinitiation of DNA replication by blocking reloading of MCM proteins at replication origins. Recent studies have proposed that MCM7 and geminin may be sensitive proliferative and prognostic markers of various malignant tumors. This study aimed to analyze the expression of MCM7 and geminin to clarify pathobiological significance in human oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs).We performed immunohistochemical analysis on 10 specimens of normal oral epithelia, 50 lesions with dysplasia and 113 OSCCs. Labeling indices (LIs) for MCM7, geminin and Ki-67 were evaluated, comparing with clinicopathological profiles.The mean LIs for MCM7 were 29.2% for normal epithelia, 32.2% for dysplasias, and 51.1% for OSCCs; the value was significantly higher in the last than in the former two (P0.01). The mean LIs for geminin were 6.8% for normal epithelia, 9.2% for dysplasias, and 21.3% for OSCCs; the value was significantly higher in the OSCCs (P0.01). The MCM7 LIs were correlated with the histological grade of OSCCs, in which the highest LIs were noted in the poorly differentiated type (P0.01). The survival rate was significantly lower in patients with a higher MCM7 LI (49.5%) than in those with a lower LI (P0.05) at stage III-IV. However, the survival rate in the patients with a higher geminin LI (19.5%) was significantly higher than in those with a lower LI (P0.05) at stage IV.

The results from Suzaku observations of the central region of the Perseus cluster are presented. Deep exposures with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer provide high quality X-ray spectra from the intracluster medium. X-ray lines from helium-like Cr and Mn have been detected significantly for the first time in clusters. In addition, elemental abundances of Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni are accurately measured within 10' (or 220 kpc) from the cluster center. The relative abundance ratios are found to be within a range of 0.8-1.5 times the solar value. These abundance ratios are compared with previous measurements, those in extremely metal-poor stars in the Galaxy, and theoretical models., 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for ApJL

Fishy aftertaste is sometimes perceived in wine with fish and seafood pairing. However, what component of wine clashes with seafood or what compound contributes to the unpleasant fishy aftertaste in the mouth remains an open problem. First, intensities of unpleasant fishy aftertaste of wine and dried scallop pairings were rated by sensory analysis. Second, components of the wines were analyzed. Strong positive correlations were found between the intensity of fishy aftertaste and the concentration of both total iron and ferrous ion. Moreover, the intensity of fishy aftertaste was increased by the addition of ferrous ion in model wine and suppressed by the chelation of ferrous ion in red wine. Third, potent volatile compounds of fishy aftertaste, such as hexanal, heptanal, 1-octen-3-one, (E,Z)-2,4-heptadienal, nonanal, and decanal, were determined by gas chromatography-olfactometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in dried scallop soaked in red wine. The formations of these compounds depended on the dose of ferrous ion in the model wine. These results suggest that ferrous ion is a key compound of the formation of fishy aftertaste in wine and seafood pairing within the concentration range commonly found in wine.

Background. Geminin negatively regulates Cdt1 and induces the formation of prereplicative complexes by loading mini- chromosome maintenance proteins (Mcm) onto chromatin and limiting DNA replication to once per cell cycle. Recent studies have suggested that geminin expression is a marker of the S/G2/M phase of the cell cycle and is associated with a poor prognosis in various human malignancies. This study aimed to clarify the pathobiological role of geminin in intes- tinal-type gastric carcinoma, and its relationships with mini- chromosome maintenance 2 (Mcm2) and Ki67 expression. Methods. We performed western blot analysis of seven human gastric cancer cell lines, and immunohistochemical analysis of 72 gastric mucosal lesions and 128 surgically removed advanced intestinal-type gastric carcinomas. Double-labeling immuno- fl uorescence was performed to identify the coexpression of geminin and Ki67. Results. Geminin was detected in all cell lines. Geminin label- ing indices (LIs) in hyperplastic polyps, low-grade adenomas, high-grade adenomas, and intestinal-type adenocarcinomas were 3.9%, 10.5%, 18.6%, and 27.2%, respectively. The equiv- alent LIs for Ki67 and Mcm2 were 17.7%, 42.2%, 52.6%, and 59.7%; and 26.7%, 70.0%, 67.8%, and 77.8%, respectively. Double-labeling immunofl uorescence revealed coexpression of geminin and Ki67 in both normal and tumor cells. The LI for geminin was signifi cantly correlated with N stage, Interna- tional Union Against Cancer (UICC) stage, Mcm2 LI, and Ki67 LI. Patients in stages I-IV and stage III with higher LIs for geminin (>25%) had signifi cantly worse prognoses (P < 0.05 and P < 0.04, respectively). Univariate Cox regression analysis indicated that the overall survival of stage I-IV tumors was signifi cantly correlated with high geminin LIs (relative risk (RR) = 1.94; P = 0.04). Conclusions. Geminin expression might refl ect the biological nature of gastric intramucosal neoplasms and could be a pos- sible prognostic marker in advanced intestinal-type gastric carcinomas.

Teleoperation systems have been used in various situations such as space tasks, rescue activities, military missions, undersea operations and unmanned constructions. Compared to direct operation, teleoperation performance is limited by a lack of awareness of remote location environments. In this paper, tactile feedback on construction machine teleoperation performance is discussed. We measured the effectiveness in a study of three-dimensional pointing tasks using Fitt's law paradigm with a tactile feedback. The way of the tactile feedback is that operator can notice an approaching excavator's bucket to ground by vibration before touching the bucket to ground. We found that total movement time was reduced by the tactile feedback.

DNA should be duplicated precisely once per cell cycle to maintain genome integrity. After DNA replication, geminin binding to Cdt1 inhibits uploading of the minichromosome maintenance (MCM) complex as DNA helicase onto chromatin and prevents DNA re-replication in the same cell cycle. Expression of geminin indicates poor prognosis in some malignancies, such as breast and renal cell carcinoma. We evaluated the expression of geminin to clarify its pathobiological and prognostic significance in colorectal cancer, compared with expression of MCM7 and Ki-67. We performed Western blot analyses of 5 human colorectal cancer cell lines and immunohistochemistry on 191 surgically removed specimens of Dukes' B and C stage colorectal cancer. Double-labeling immunofluorescence was also carried out to identify co-expression of geminin, MCM7 and Ki-67. Geminin proteins were detected in all the 5 cell lines examined. Geminin, MCM7 and Ki-67 were co-expressed and cells that stained only for geminin were not detected. Mean labeling indices (LIs) for geminin, MCM7 and Ki-67 were 26.3, 58.2 and 40.8%, respectively. Patients with high geminin LIs had significantly unfavorable prognosis in stage II and III colorectal cancer (P=0.04). Patients with a tumor with a higher proliferating nature (i.e. high LIs for three markers) showed significantly unfavorable prognosis in multivariate Cox analysis. Our results indicate that assessment of geminin, MCM7 and Ki-67 may be useful for predicting prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer.

In treating nasal allergies, desensitization is widely used on a daily basis, and its efficacy has been highly valued. With the purpose of predicting therapeutic efficacy before carrying out immunotherapy, we compared whole blood histamine release rate and various subjective symptoms before and after immunotherapy. We also compared the degrees of efficacy. Immunotherapy brought about a tendency for a reduction in the whole blood histamine release rate. This tendency appeared most marked in those patients in whom an improvement of subjective symptoms was considerable. Among subjective symptoms, the reduction in whole blood histamine release rate was strongest against nasal discharge and sneezing. In patients with a low histamine release rate prior to the initiation of immunotherapy, the improvement in subjective symptoms tended to be low.

We carried out observations of the central and 20’ east offset regions of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1060 with Suzaku. Spatially resolved X-ray spectral=analysis has revealed temperature and abundance profiles of Abell 1060 out to 27’0≃380 h−1 70 kpc, which corresponded to ∼0.3 γvir. The temperature decrease of the intra cluster medium from 3.4 keV at the center to 2.2 keV in the outskirt region are clearly observed. Si, S and Fe abundances also decrease by more than 50% from the center to the outer parts, while Mg shows a fairly constant abundance of ∼ 0.7 solar within γ 13’).Results on temperature and abundances of Si, S, and Fe are consistent with those derived by XMM-Newton atγ < 13’ The formation and metal enrichment of the cluster are discussed based on implications of our results.

Previously we reported that the hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) expression correlated with cell proliferation and apoptosis under 500 mM of CoCl2 treatment in a human gastric carcinoma cell line, MKN-1. Herein we report a similar correlation in other cell lines, MKN-45 and TMK-1. The dual-phase expression of HIF-1alpha was highest at 6 and 8 h of treatment in MKN-45 and TMK-1, respectively, while the peak in MKN-1 occurred at 4 h. The cell viability indices showed a similar dual phase to the HIF-1alpha expression, while the apoptotic indices started to increase as the level of the HIF-1alpha expression decreased. In our previous study, the FACS analysis showed a marked G2/M arrest and an increase of the pre-G1 area in MKN-1 after 36 h of treatment, whereas the G2/M arrest was not observed in MKN-45 and TMK-1. The expression of cell cycle and apoptosis-related proteins showed a correlation with the HIF-1alpha expression and the FACS results, which suggested that the level of HIF-1alpha correlated with proliferation and apoptosis in human gastric carcinoma cell lines with a possible cell-type specific pattern.

Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) is a member of the polycomb group of genes and is important in cell cycle regulation. Overexpression of EZH2 protein has been associated with biological malignancy of prostate cancer and several other cancers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of EZH2 protein in human oral normal mucosa, dysplasia and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with clinicopathological profiles. EZH2 expression was assessed by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry in 3 OSCC cell lines, 10 normal mucosae, 50 dysplasias and 102 OSCCs. The labeling indices (LIs) of EZH2, Ki-67, P53, and the apoptotic index (AI) were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method. Western blot analysis detected EZH2 protein as a single band at 91kDa in the 3 OSCC cell lines, but it was almost absent in non-tumoral oral mucosae. The LI of EZH2 was highest in the OSCCs, followed by the dysplasias (p0.05) and normal mucosae (p0.05) with significant difference. The LI of EZH2 correlated with the clinical stage, tumor size, lymph node metastasis and LIs of Ki-67 and P53, but not with the AI in OSCCs, and inversely correlated with the histological differentiation of OSCCs. The survival rate calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method revealed that OSCC patients with higher EZH2 expression showed poorer prognosis than those with a lower EZH2 expression (p0.01). These results suggest that overexpression of EZH2 is correlated with malignant potential and poor prognosis in OSCCs. EZH2 might serve as a novel biomarker for predicting prognosis in patients with OSCCs.

About half of the baryons in the local Universe are thought to reside in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures of 0.1-10 million K. Thermal soft excess emission in the spectrum of some cluster outskirts that contains OVII and/or OVIII emission lines is regarded as evidence of the WHIM, although the origin of the lines is controversial due to strong Galactic and solar system foreground emission. We observed the Coma-11 field, where the most prominent thermal soft excess has ever been reported, with Suzaku XIS in order to make clear the origin of the excess. We did not confirm OVII or OVIII excess emission. The OVII and OVIII intensity in Coma-11 is more than 5 sigma below that reported before and we obtained 2 sigma upper limits of 2.8 and 2.9 photons cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for OVII and OVIII, respectively. The intensities are consistent with those in another field (Coma-7) that we measured, and with other measurements in the Coma outskirts (Coma-7 and X Com fields with XMM-Newton). We did not confirm the spatial variation within Coma outskirts. The strong oxygen emission lines previously reported are likely due to solar wind charge exchange., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The therapeutic effect of Bifemerane Hydrochloride was studied in 43 patients with vertigo. The patients were given a 50mg tablet of Bifemelane Hydrochloride three times daily for over 8 weeks.Evaluation of the final global improvement showed it to be very effective in 7 patients (16.3%), moderately effective in 15 (34.9%) and slightly effective in 13 (30.2%), giving a total efficacy rate of 81.4%.No side effects were noted.Bifemerane Hydrochloride tablets were considered to be useful for patients with vertigo.

A novel method for construction of biaryls via palladium(0)-catalyzed [2+2+2] cocyclization of diynes and arynes was developed. By this [2+2+2] cocyclization, various arylnaphthalene derivatives, including a sterically hindered 2,2′-disubstituted-1,1′-binaphthyl, can be constructed by virtue of a variety of combinations of diynes and aryne precursors. Using this [2+2+2] cocyclization as a key step, the total syntheses of natural arylnaphthalene lignans, taiwanin C, taiwanin E, and dehydrodesoxypodophyllotoxin were achieved.

We present an analysis of new Suzaku data and archival data from XMM-Newton of the cluster of galaxies Sersic 159-03, which has a strong soft X-ray excess emission component. The Suzaku observation confirms the presence of the soft excess emission, but it does not confirm the presence of redshifted OVII lines in the cluster. Radial profiles and 2D maps derived from XMM-Newton observations show that the soft excess emission has a strong peak at the position of the central cD galaxy and the maps do not show any significant azimuthal variations. Although the soft excess emission can be fitted equally well with both thermal and non-thermal models, its spatial distribution is neither consistent with the models of intercluster warm-hot filaments, nor with models of clumpy warm intracluster gas associated with infalling groups. Using the data obtained by the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometers we do not confirm the presence of the warm gas in the cluster centre with the expected properties assuming the soft excess is of thermal origin. The observed properties of the soft excess emission are consistent with the non-thermal interpretation. While the high density of relativistic electrons associated with the peak of the soft emission in the cluster centre might have been provided by an active galactic nucleus in the central cD galaxy, the underlying population might have been accelerated in diffuse shocks., Comment: to appear in A&A

We report in-flight status of the X-ray detectors on board the Suzaku observatory, the 5th X-ray astronomy satellite of Japan launched on July 10, 2005. Suzaku is equipped with two types of instruments: one is the X-ray imaging spectrometers (XISs) and the other is hard X-ray detector (HXD). XIS utilizes the X-ray CCD camera in combination with the grazing-incidence X-ray telescope. HXD is a non-imaging, hybrid detector utilizing Si PIN diodes and GSO/BGO phoswich counters. Suzaku takes a low-earth, circular orbit with an altitude of 560 km and an inclination of 31 deg. This means that Suzaku goes through the south atlantic anomaly about 1/3 of its revolutions. This has a large impact on the in-flight performance of XIS and HXD, which is reported in detail in the present paper.

We present our XMM-Newton RGS observations of X Comae, an AGN behind the Coma cluster. We detect absorption by NeIX and OVIII at the redshift of Coma with an equivalent width of 3.3+/-1.8 eV and 1.7+/-1.3 eV, respectively (90% confidence errors or 2.3 sigma and 1.9 sigma confidence detections determined from Monte Carlo simulations). The combined significance of both lines is 3.0 sigma, again determined from Monte Carlo simulations. The same observation yields a high statistics EPIC spectrum of the Coma cluster gas at the position of X Comae. We detect emission by NeIX with a flux of 2.5+/-1.2 x 10^-8 photons cm^-2 s^-1 arcmin^-2 (90% confidence errors or 3.4 sigma confidence detection). These data permit a number of diagnostics to determine the properties of the material causing the absorption and producing the emission. Although a wide range of properties is permitted, values near the midpoint of the range are T = 4 x 10^6 K, n_H = 6 x 10^-6 cm^-3 corresponding to an overdensity with respect to the mean of 32, line of sight path length through it 41 Z/Zsolar^-1 Mpc where Z/Zsolar is the neon metallicity relative to solar. All of these properties are what has been predicted of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), so we conclude that we have detected the WHIM associated with the Coma cluster., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures. We present results from a new 120 ks XMM-Newton observation of the cluster of galaxies Sersic 159-03. In this paper we focus on the high-resolution X-ray spectra obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS). The spectra allow us to constrain the temperature structure in the core of the cluster and determine the emission measure distribution as a function of temperature. We present here the results of a deep (130 ks) XMM-Newton observation of the cluster of galaxies 2A 0335+096. The deep exposure allows us to study in detail its temperature structure and its elemental abundances. We fit three different thermal models and find that the multi-temperature wdem model fits our data best. We find that the abundance structure of the cluster is consistent with a scenario where the relative number of Type Ia supernovae contributing to the enrichment of the intra-cluster medium is ~25%, while the relative number of core collapse supernovae is ~75%. Comparison of the observed abundances to the supernova yields does not allow us to put any constrains on the contribution of Pop III stars to the enrichment of the ICM. Radial abundance profiles show a strong central peak of both Type Ia and core collapse supernova products. Both the temperature and iron abundance maps show an asymmetry in the direction of the elongated morphology of the surface brightness. In particular the temperature map shows a sharp change over a brightness edge on the southern side of the core, which was identified as a cold front in the Chandra data. This suggests that the cluster is in the process of a merger with a subcluster. Moreover, we find that the blobs or filaments discovered in the core of the cluster by Chandra are, contrary to the previous results, colder than the ambient gas and they appear to be in pressure equilibrium with their environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 19 pages

We herein report a case of traumatic herniation of the buccal fat pad. A 2-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of mass formation in the buccal mucosa after trauma by a toothbrush. An elastic-soft mass approximately 20 mm × 20 mm in size was located in the left buccal mucosa. The clinical diagnosis was herniation of the buccal fat pad. The lesion was excised under local anaesthesia. Histopathologic examination revealed adipose tissue with ulceration of the overlying epithelium, inflammatory cell infiltration, and formation of granulation tissue. The final pathological diagnosis was pseudolipoma at the buccal mucosa. There has been no recurrence for 3 months.
