Perinatal hypoxia ischemia (HI) is a significant cause of brain injury in surviving infants. Although hypothermia improves outcomes in some infants, additional therapies are needed since about 40% of infants still have a poor outcome. Acetyl- L -carnitine (ALCAR), an acetylated derivative of L -carnitine, protected against early changes in brain metabolites and mitochondrial function after HI on postnatal day (PND) 7 in a rat pup model of near-term HI injury. However, its efficacy in long-term structural and functional outcomes remains unexplored. We determined the efficacy of ALCAR therapy administered to rat pups after HI at PND 7, using both longitudinal in vivo magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral tests, in male and female rats. HI led to sex-specific behavioral impairment, with males exhibiting more global functional deficits than females. Interestingly, HI reduced the volume of the contralateral hemisphere in males only, suggesting that the brain injury is more diffuse in males than in females. Treatment with ALCAR improved both morphological and functional outcomes in both male and female rats. These results suggest that ALCAR may be a potential therapy for clinical use since the treatment attenuated the moderate injury produced under the experimental conditions used and improved the functional outcome in preclinical studies. The indolizidine alkaloid, swainsonine (SW), is the main toxic component of locoweed, which can cause locoism in animals with characteristic neurological dysfunction. Pathological manifestations at cellular level include extensive vacuolar degeneration. Studies have shown that SW can induces autophagy, but the role and mechanism of autophagy in SW-induced vacuolar degeneration is unclear. In this study, we analyzed the role of autophagy in SW-induced cell injury in mouse hippocampal neurons cell line (HT22) using western blotting, qRT-PCR, transmission electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy. The results showed that the expressions of LC3-II, ATG5, Beclin1 and p62 proteins and their mRNAs in HT22 cells were induced by SW treatment. The SW treatment increased the number of autophagosomes with enhanced fluorescence intensity of monodansylcadaverine (MDC) and LC3-II in a time-dose dependent manner. The results of lysosome staining showed that SW could increase the number of lysosomes, increase the intraluminal pH. Transmission electron microscopy results indicate that SW induced autophagosomes, and Baf A1 could effectively alleviate SW-induced vacuolar degeneration. At the molecular level, SW treatment inhibited the expression of p-PI3K, p-AKT, p-ERK, p-AMPK, p-mTOR, p-p70S6K and p-4EBP1 and promoted the expression of p53. Our results collectively suggest, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, ERK/mTOR and p53/mTOR signaling pathways are involved in the regulation of SW-induced autophagy in HT22 cells, while the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway is not involved in this regulation. Background: It has been reported that trochlear dysplasia occurs very early in development, and environmental factors like swaddling may cause developmental dysplasia of the hip, which is associated with a shallower trochlear groove. However, to our knowledge, there are no definitive studies about the relationship between trochlear dysplasia and traditional straight-leg swaddling.Questions/purposes: Using a rat model of femoral trochlear dysplasia, we asked: Does straight-leg swaddling for 1 and 2 weeks in newborn Wistar rats alter the femoral trochlea with respect to (1) gross morphology, (2) histologic appearance, as well as (3) trochlear sulcus angle, width, and depth?Methods: Eighty-four newborn Wistar rats (44 females and 40 males) were divided into two equal groups: 42 in the unswaddled group and 42 in the swaddled group; each group was comprised of 22 females and 20 males. In the swaddled group, the rats were wrapped in surgical tape to maintain hip and knee extension to simulate traditional human straight-leg swaddling. To determine whether longer periods of swaddling were associated with more severe trochlear dysplasia, 21 rats in each group were euthanized at 1 and 2 weeks, respectively, and the gross morphology of the femoral trochlea was observed by one observer blinded to condition. Then hematoxylin and eosin staining of the femoral trochlea was performed and the distribution and number of the chondrocytes of the trochlear groove were viewed through a microscope. The trochlear sulcus angles, depth, and width were measured by an experienced technician blinded to condition.Results: By observing the gross morphology, we found that the trochlear groove in the swaddled group became qualitatively flatter compared with the unswaddled group at 1 week, and at 2 weeks, the trochlear groove became much shallower. At 1 and 2 weeks, histologic examinations showed obvious qualitative changes in the distribution and number of chondrocytes of the trochlear groove in the swaddled than in the unswaddled groups. In the swaddled group, trochlear dysplasia was more common at 2 weeks, occurring in 62% (26 of 42 [16 of 22 females and 10 of 22 males]) versus 33% (14 of 42 [8 of 22 females and 6 of 20 males]) at 1 week. At 1 week, the swaddled group showed more trochlear dysplasia compared with the unswaddled group as measured by angle of the trochlear groove (137° ± 6° versus 132°± 3.6°, mean difference 5° [95% confidence interval 2.9° to 7.2°]; p < 0.001), depth of the trochlear grove (0.28 ± 0.04 mm versus 0.31 ± 0.02 mm, mean difference 0.03 mm [95% CI 0.01 to 0.04]; p < 0.001). At 2 weeks, the swaddled group showed more severe trochlear dysplasia than at 1 week compared with the unswaddled group as measured by the angle of the trochlear groove (135° ± 6.0° versus 128° ± 4.8°, mean difference 7° [95% CI 5.7° to 10.4°]; p < 0.001), depth of the trochlear grove (0.32 ± 0.04 mm versus 0.36 ± 0.02 mm, mean difference 0.04 mm [95% CI 0.03 to 0.06]; p < 0.001). There was no difference in the width of the trochlear sulcus between the swaddled and the unswaddled groups at 1 week (1.29 ± 0.14 mm versus 1.30 ± 0.12 mm, mean difference 0.01 mm [95% CI -0.05 to 0.07]; p = 0.73) and 2 weeks (1.55 ± 0.12 mm versus 1.56 ± 0.12 mm, mean difference 0.01 mm [95% CI -0.05 to 0.07]; p = 0.70).Conclusion: Our results indicate that traditional straight-leg swaddling could induce trochlear dysplasia in this model of newborn rats. With an increased swaddling time of 2 weeks, more severe trochlear dysplasia appeared in the swaddled group.Clinical Relevance: Our findings suggest that traditional straight-leg swaddling may impair trochlear development in the human neonate and lead to trochlear dysplasia in infants. We believe our animal model will be useful in future work to observe and study the change of cartilage and subchondral bone in each stage of the development of trochlear dysplasia and the change of mechanotransduction-associated proteins (such as, TRPV4/ Piezo1 and CollagenⅡ) in cartilage and subchondral osteocytes. Four novel polymeric metal complexes with a D–A–π–A motif, BDTT-PY-Cd, BDTT-PY-Zn, BDTT-PY-Cu and BDTT-PY-Ni, were designed, synthesized and characterized. These polymeric metal complexes were made up with Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) complexes, thienylbenzo-[1,2-b:4,5-b'] dithiophene (BDTT) and the 8-quinolinol derivative, which were used severally as dye sensitzers' auxiliary electron acceptors (A), electron donor (D) and π bridges as well as the acceptors (A). Under AM 1.5 irradiation (100 mW cm−2), the devices of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) based on four polymer complexes exhibited short-circuit photocurrent densities (Jsc) of 17.45 mA cm−2, 14.75 mA cm−2, 13.94 mA cm−2 and 12.00 mA cm−2, as well as attractive power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of were 9.73%, 8.02%, 6.82% and 6.12%, respectively. The photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) and short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) of BDTT-PY-Cd, BDTT-PY-Zn, BDTT-PY-Cu and BDTT-PY-Ni decrease in order because the radius and charge number of the metal ion affect the strength of the coordination bond between the metal ion and the ligand. [Display omitted] • Sensing miniaturization is realized by screen-printing electrode substrate. • Development of a high capacitance hydrophobic SC based on NiCo 2 S 4 /PFOA. • SC-ISE based on NiCo 2 S 4 /PFOA has high stability and reproducibility. • The electrode realizes the accurate detection of copper ions in soil leaching solution. In this work, an ion-selective electrode (ISE) for copper ion with excellent stability and reproducibility is prepared by introducing a solid-contact (SC) layer between the screen-printed electrode (SPE) and ion-selective membrane (ISM). The SC layer is fabricated by the electrodeposition of nano-arrayed NiCo 2 S 4 on SPE, and thereafter is surface-modified by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to realize superior double layer capacitance (C DL) and hydrophobicity. The results show the water contact angle of the SC is 134°. The C DL of the modified ISE, named as Cu2+-SC(25)ISE, is 48.53 μF·cm−2, about 6.5 times of the ISE without SC. The detection limit of the Cu2+-SC(25)ISE is 4.62 μM. The SC with nano-structured NiCo 2 S 4 frameworks and hydrophobic PFOA chains provides outstanding capacitance and high potential stability simultaneously, and further endows Cu2+-SC(25)ISE with excellent detection accuracy. For the detection of Cu2+ in soil leachate, the average detection errors of the Cu2+-SC(25)ISE and ICP-OES are 4.14 % and 3.02 % respectively, revealing the potential application prospect of this technic. We studied 34 isolates of Tigecycline-Non-Susceptible A. baumannii (TNAB) obtained from clinical specimens at a large tertiary care hospital in Chongqing, China. These 34 strains belonged to 8 different clones including ST195 (35.3%) and ST208 (17.7%). EBURST analysis found that these 8 ST types belonged to the Clonal Complex 92. Tigecycline resistance-associated genes adeR, adeS, adeL, adeN, rrf, rpsJ, and trm were detected in most strains. The expression level of the resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) efflux pumps in TNAB strains was higher than the reference strain ATCC19606. 58.8% of strains had a decrease in the tigecycline minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) after the addition of carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP). The TNAB strains in our hospital have a high degree of affinity and antibiotic resistance. Regular surveillance should be conducted to prevent outbreaks of TNAB epidemics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to reduce the environmental hazards of red mud (RM) and realize its resource utilization, in this study, RM-based iron-carbon micro-electrolysis material (RM-MEM) were prepared by a carbothermal reduction process using RM as raw material. The influence of the preparation conditions on the phase transformation and structural characteristics of the RM-MEM were investigated during the reduction process. The ability of RM-MEM to remove organic pollutants from wastewater was evaluated. The results showed that RM-MEM prepared at a reduction temperature of 1100 °C, a reduction time of 50 min and a coal dosage of 50% had the best removal effect for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). When the initial MB concentration was 20 mg L−1, the amount of RM-MEM material was 4 g L−1, the initial pH was 7, and the degradation efficiency reached 99.75% after 60 min. When RM-MEM is split into carbon free and iron free parts for use, the degradation effect becomes worse. Compared to other materials, RM-MEM has lower cost and better degradation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that hematite was transformed to zero-valent iron with the increase in the roasting temperature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that micron-sized ZVI particles were formed in the RM-MEM, and increasing the carbon thermal reduction temperature was beneficial to the growth of zero-valent iron particles. Developing highly efficient electromagnetic (EM) absorbers with a broad bandwidth remains a major challenge for reducing EM pollution originating from the ever-rising electronic and telecommunication devices. Designing core-shell structures containing a magnetic core and dielectric shell could be an effective strategy to tackle this problem. Herein, we report a surface modification strategy to synthesize the FeSiAl/phosphate core-shell materials with unique rodlike structure through a facile surface passivation process. Multilevel phosphate shells are in situ introduced for significantly facilitating the EM absorbing performance by inducing multiple interfacial polarizations and obtain ideal impedance matching. Direct evidence of the morphology and microstructure evolution of resultant FeSiAl/phosphate composites correlated to the EM properties has been systematically investigated. Due to intense synergistic effects between magnetic and dielectric loss, exceptional microwave dissipation capacity can be achieved over an ultra-wide absorption bandwidth of 9.8 GHz at 2.5 mm. • The microstructure evolution at high temperatures has been elaborated at different scales by the focused ion beam technology. • Core-shell structure enhanced the dielectric loss ability by inducing multiple interfacial polarizations and achieved ideal impedance matching. • Superb dissipation capacity has been achieved over an ultra-wide range of 9.8 GHz attributed to the magnetic-dielectric synergistic effects. Three-dimensional (3D) printing, known as revolutionary and disruptive innovation in manufacturing technology, supports great opportunities to rapidly construct a wide range of tailored object geometries. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin as the three most common natural polymers and main components of plant resources, possess great economical potential for bio-based products due to their attractive advantages. The integration of 3D printing technology involved with cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin as the major bio-based feedstock for high-performance 3D printed products has received great concern in the R&D areas. In this review, the aim is to shed light on a cutting-edge review on the most recent progress based on cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, as well as their derivatives as multi-components of bio-feedstock for 3D printing, in which the applications, roles and functions of the plant-derived biomass for 3D printing are also highlighted. Background: The deep femoral vein generally has individual differences in origin, course, tributary, caliber, and quantity. However, systematic research on deep femoral vein variations remains insufficient. Given this, this study used anatomical observation to reveal the types and ratios of variations in the deep femoral vein and its tributaries., Methods: This study selected 63 gross specimens of intact lower extremities and dissected their 126 lower limbs layer by layer to explore variations in the deep femoral vein and its tributaries., Results: A total of 15 lower limbs exhibit variations in the deep femoral vein and its tributaries, of which 93% were unilateral. No correlation was found between the mutations and gender. They can be generally classified into three types: variations in the small saphenous vein branch of the deep femoral vein (7.14%), variations in the popliteal vein branch of the deep femoral vein (3.96%), and multiple deep femoral vein variations (0.79%)., Conclusions: Variations in the deep femoral vein and its tributaries are not rare and can achieve a variation rate of 11.9%. Moreover, 93% of the variations involve tributaries of the deep femoral vein, among which 60% occur in the small saphenous vein branch, and approximately 30% are related to the popliteal vein branch. Objectives: Clostridioides difficile ranks among the primary sources of healthcare-related infections and diarrhoea in numerous nations. We evaluated the drug susceptibility and resistance mechanisms of C. difficile isolates from a hospital in Chongqing, China, and identified resistance rates and resistance mechanisms that differed from previous findings., Methods: The toxin genes and drug resistance genes of clinical strains were detected using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and these strains were subjected to Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST). The agar dilution technique was employed for assessing susceptibility of antibiotics. Clinical data collection was completed through a review of electronic medical records., Results: A total of 67 strains of toxin-producing C. difficile were detected. All C. difficile isolates demonstrated susceptibility to both metronidazole and vancomycin. However, resistance was observed in 8.95%, 16.42%, 56.72%, 56.72%, 31.34% and 5.97% of the isolates for tigecycline, tetracycline, clindamycin, erythromycin, moxifloxacin and rifampin, respectively. Among the strains with toxin genotypes A + B + CDT - and belonging to the ST3, six strains exhibited reduced susceptibility to tigecycline (MIC=0.5mg/L) and tetracycline (MIC=8mg/L). The tetA(P) and tetB(P) genes were present in these six strains, but were absent in tetracycline-resistant strains. Resistance genes (ermB, tetM, tetA(P) and tetB(P)) and mutations (in gyrA, gyrB, and rpoB) were identified in resistant strains., Conclusions: In contrast to prior studies, we found higher proportions of ST3 isolates with decreased tigecycline sensitivity, sharing similar resistance patterns and resistance genes. A secondary contact zone (SCZ) is an area where incipient species or divergent populations may meet, mate, and hybridize. Due to the diverse patterns of interspecific hybridization, SCZs function as field labs for illuminating the on-going evolutionary processes of speciation and the establishment of reproductive isolation. Interspecific hybridization is widely present in avian populations, making them an ideal system for SCZ studies. This review exhaustively summarizes the variations in unique traits within avian SCZs (vocalization, plumage, beak, and migratory traits) and the various movement patterns of SCZs observed in previous publications. It also highlights several potential future research directions in the genomic era, such as the relationship between phenotypic and genomic differentiation in SCZs, the genomic basis of trait differentiation, SCZs shared by multiple species, and accurate predictive models for forecasting future movements under climate change and human disturbances. This review aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of speciation processes and offers a theoretical foundation for species conservation.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the elderly, is primarily characterized by the degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). However, effective therapeutic options for dry AMD are currently lacking, necessitating further exploration into preventive and pharmaceutical interventions. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of gastrodin on RPE cells exposed to oxidative stress. We constructed an in vitro oxidative stress model of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) and performed RNA-seq, and demonstrated the protective effect of gastrodin through mouse experiments. Our findings reveal that gastrodin can inhibit 4-HNE-induced oxidative stress, effectively improving the mitochondrial and lysosomal dysfunction of RPE cells. We further elucidated that gastrodin promotes autophagy and phagocytosis through activating the PPARα-TFEB/CD36 signaling pathway. Interestingly, these outcomes were corroborated in a mouse model, in which gastrodin maintained retinal integrity and reduced RPE disorganization and degeneration under oxidative stress. The accumulation of LC3B and SQSTM1 in mouse RPE-choroid was also reduced. Moreover, activating PPARα and downstream pathways to restore autophagy and phagocytosis, thereby countering RPE injury from oxidative stress. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that gastrodin maintains the normal function of RPE cells by reducing oxidative stress, enhancing their phagocytic function, and restoring the level of autophagic flow. Manipulating optical chirality via electric fields has garnered considerable attention in the realm of both fundamental physics and practical applications. Chiral ferroelectrics, characterized by their inherent optical chirality and switchable spontaneous polarization, are emerging as a promising platform for electronic-photonic integrated circuits applications. Unlike organics with chiral carbon centers, integrating chirality into technologically mature inorganic ferroelectrics has posed a long-standing challenge. Here, the successful introduction of chirality is reported into self-assembly La-doped BiFeO 3 nanoislands, which exhibit ferroelectric vortex domains. By employing synergistic experimental techniques with piezoresponse force microscopy and nonlinear optical second-harmonic generation probes, a clear correlation between chirality and polarization configuration within these ferroelectric nanoislands is established. Furthermore, the deterministic control of ferroelectric vortex domains and chirality is demonstrated by applying electric fields, enabling reversible and nonvolatile generation and elimination of optically chiral signals. The trade-off between electrostrain and strain hysteresis for piezo/ferroelectric materials largely restrains the development of high precision actuators and remains unresolved over the past few decades. Here, a simple composition of (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 ) 1-x/100 Sr x/100 TiO 3 in the ergodic relaxor state is collaboratively designed through the segregated domain structure with the ferroelectric core, local polarization heterogeneity, and defect engineering. The ferroelectric core can act as a seed to facilitate the field-induced nonpolar-to-polar transition. Together with the internal bias field caused by defect dipoles and adjusted through electric field cycling and heat treatment technology, a giant unipolar strain of 1.03% is achieved in the x = 30 ceramic with a low hysteresis of 27%, while the electric-field-independent large-signal piezoelectric strain coefficient of ~1000 pm/V and ultralow hysteresis of <10% can be obtained in the x = 35 ceramic. Aurantii Fructus Immaturus total flavonoids (AFIF) is the main effective fraction extracted from AFI, which has a good effect on promoting gastrointestinal motility. This study aimed to investigate AFIF which regulates miR-5100 to improve constipation symptoms in mice by targeting Frizzled-2 (Fzd2) to alleviate interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) calcium ion balance and autophagy apoptosis. The constipated mouse model was induced by an antibiotic suspension, and then treated with AFIF. RNA-seq sequencing, luciferase assay, immunofluorescence staining, transmission electron microscopy, ELISA, flow cytometry, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and Western blot were applied in this study. The results showed that AFIF improved constipation symptoms in antibiotic-induced constipated mice, and decreased the autophagy-related protein Beclin1 levels and the LC3-II/I ratio in ICCs. miR-5100 and its target gene Fzd2 were screened as key miRNAs and regulator associated with autophagy. Downregulation of miR-5100 caused increased expression of Fzd2, decreased proliferation activity of ICCs, increased apoptotic cells, and enhanced calcium ion release and autophagy signals. After AFIF treatment, miR-5100 expression was upregulated and Fzd2 was downregulated, while autophagy-related protein levels and calcium ion concentration decreased. Furthermore, AFIF increased the levels of SP, 5-HT, and VIP, and increased the expression of PGP9.5, Sy, and Cx43, which alleviated constipation by improving the integrity of the enteric nervous system network. In conclusion, AFIF could attenuate constipation symptoms by upregulating the expression of miR-5100 and targeting inhibition of Fzd2, alleviating calcium overload and autophagic death of ICCs, regulating the content of neurotransmitters, and enhancing the integrity of the enteric nervous system network., (© 2024. Background: Computer-aided detection of cognitive impairment garnered increasing attention, offering older adults in the community access to more objective, ecologically valid, and convenient cognitive assessments using multimodal sensing technology on digital devices., Methodology: In this study, we aimed to develop an automated method for screening cognitive impairment, building on paper- and electronic TMTs. We proposed a novel deep representation learning approach named Semi-Supervised Vector Quantised-Variational AutoEncoder (S2VQ-VAE). Within S2VQ-VAE, we incorporated intra- and inter-class correlation losses to disentangle class-related factors. These factors were then combined with various real-time obtainable features (including demographic, time-related, pressure-related, and jerk-related features) to create a robust feature engineering block. Finally, we identified the light gradient boosting machine as the optimal classifier. The experiments were conducted on a dataset collected from older adults in the community., Results: The experimental results showed that the proposed multi-type feature fusion method outperformed the conventional method used in paper-based TMTs and the existing VAE-based feature extraction in terms of screening performance., Conclusions: In conclusion, the proposed deep representation learning method significantly enhances the cognitive diagnosis capabilities of behavior-based TMTs and streamlines large-scale community-based cognitive impairment screening while reducing the workload of professional healthcare staff.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of a novel modification of the Nishida procedure with medial rectus recession (Nishida-MRc) for myopic strabismus fixus (MSF) and to compare this modified procedure with the half Jensen's union with medial rectus recession (U-MRc)., Methods: The medical records of MSF patients who underwent strabismus surgery at a single institution between January 2017 and June 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. The main outcome measures assessed were postoperative improvements in ocular alignment and motility. Surgical success was defined as horizontal and vertical deviations ≤15 Δ ., Results: A total of 45 patients were included, of whom 39 had no previous strabismus surgery. All but 3 had follow-up ≥8 months. Nishida-MRc, with or without a traction suture (Ts), had a success rate (9/16 [56%]) higher, though not statistically significantly so, than U-MRc with or without Ts (11/29 [38%]). The Nishida-MRc group tended to have less frequent use of Ts (25% vs 52%; P = 0.076), and 94% of these patients had a deviation within 20 Δ , compared with 59% for U-MRc (P = 0.012). In cases with esotropia of ≥123 Δ , final residual esotropia in the Nishida-MRc without Ts (12.40 Δ ± 8.30 Δ ) and U-MRc-Ts (19.75 Δ ± 18.62 Δ ) groups was significantly lower (P = 0.019) than in the U-MRc without Ts group (63.40 Δ ± 40.83 Δ ), and the average correction of esotropia was significantly greater (P = 0.014)., Conclusions: In our study cohort, Nishida-MRc produced a greater effect in the treatment of MSF than U-MRc., (Copyright © 2024 American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Importance: Lack of evidence and consensus for brace weaning protocol in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) results in clinicians prescribing gradual weaning in the hope of avoiding curve deterioration after weaning. However, gradual weaning contributes to prolonged brace wear, which can affect spinal stiffness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL)., Objective: To determine whether gradual weaning results in better curve magnitude and truncal balance maintenance after brace weaning vs immediate brace removal for patients with AIS., Design, Setting, and Participants: This was an open-labeled randomized clinical trial commenced in April 2017 with 24-month follow-up completed in January 2023. Outcome assessors were masked to weaning protocol assigned. The study took place at a territory-wide tertiary scoliosis clinic serving the largest number of referrals in the local population. Patients with AIS ready to wean off of brace wear were eligible (402 were screened; 33 were excluded [15 for <18 hours/day of brace-wear compliance before weaning, 11 were treated with Milwaukee brace, and 7 declined to participate]; and 369 were included), and those who were treated with a custom molded thoracolumbosacral orthosis and had reached skeletal maturity were consecutively recruited., Interventions: Patients were randomized to gradual weaning protocol (n = 176) with an additional 6 months of nighttime wear before completely stopping or immediate weaning protocol (n = 193) with immediate brace removal at recruitment., Main Outcomes and Measures: Changes in major curve Cobb angle and truncal balance from the time of weaning to 6-month, 12-month, and 24-month follow-up. HRQoL was also assessed using the refined Scoliosis Research Society 22-item and EuroQol 5-dimension questionnaires., Results: A total of 369 patients (mean [SD] age, 14.9 [1.1] years; 304 [83.4%] girls) were randomized with 284 (77.0%) completing 24-month longitudinal follow-up. Immediate and gradual weaning groups had no significant differences in change of major Cobb angle at postweaning 6-month (difference, -0.6°; 95% CI, -1.4 to 0.2; P = .17), 12-month (difference, -0.3°; 95% CI, -1.2 to 0.6; P = .47), and 24-month (difference, -0.3°; 95% CI, -1.2 to 0.7; P = .60) follow-up. The number of curve progression, nonprogression, and rebound cases were comparable (χ22 = 2.123; P = .35). Postweaning changes in truncal balance and HRQoL demonstrated no significant differences between groups., Conclusions: Gradual weaning did not demonstrate superiority to immediate weaning with predefined criteria of Cobb angle and truncal balance maintenance and HRQoL after brace weaning. Gradual and immediate weaning achieved very similar maintenance of brace outcomes in AIS. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are a group of naturally occurring alkaloids widely present in plants. PAs are highly hepatotoxic and have been documented to cause many incidents of human and animal poisoning. Retrorsine (RTS) is a pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) derived from the Compositae Senecio, which has been shown to cause hepatotoxicity. Human liver poisoning occurs through the consumption of RTS-contaminated food, and animals can also be poisoned by ingesting RTS-containing toxic plants. The mechanism of RTS-induced liver toxicity is not fully understood. In this study, we demonstrated that RTS-induced oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in RTS-induced liver toxicity involving apoptosis and autophagy. The results showed that RTS treatment in the cultured Primary rat hepatocytes caused cytotoxicity and release of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Our study showed that treatment of RTS induced ROS and MDA (malondialdehyde, a lipid peroxidation marker) in the hepatocytes, and reduced antioxidant capacity (GSH content, SOD activity), suggesting RTS treatment caused oxidative stress response in the hepatocytes. Furthermore, we found that RTS induced apoptosis and autophagy in the hepatocytes, and RTS-induced apoptosis and autophagy could be alleviated by ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and the MAPK pathway inhibitors suggesting ROS/MAPK signaling pathway plays a role in RTS induced apoptosis and autophagy. Collectively, this study reveals the regulatory mechanism of oxidative stress in RTS-induced apoptosis and autophagy in the hepatocytes, providing important insights of molecular mechanisms of hepatotoxicity induced by RTS and related pyrrolizidine alkaloids in liver. Purpose: Strabismus reoperation in Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is complicated and challenging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the various surgical strategies of strabismus reoperation and their outcomes in patients with GO., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on strabismus reoperations performed at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China from 2008 to 2018. Data collected included sex, age at surgery, duration of deviation, ocular alignment, ocular motility, various surgical procedures performed and surgical outcomes. Surgical methods included rectus recession for newly developed strabismus, rectus resection for undercorrection and anterior advancement of a previously recessed rectus for overcorrection. Surgical success was defined as an absence of diplopia, a horizontal deviation of ≤ 10 prism diopters (PD) and a vertical deviation of ≤ 5 PD at distance in primary and reading positions., Results: Of the 153 GO patients receiving strabismus surgery, 27 cases (20 males, 7 females) underwent reoperation for strabismus, with a reoperation rate of 17.6%. Success rates of reoperation in patients with a previous undercorrection and overcorrection were 45% and 71.4%, respectively. Success rates of rectus recession, rectus resection and anterior advancement were 47.1%, 66.7% and 50%, respectively. Two patients underwent the third surgery. The overall success rate was 51.9%., Conclusions: Rectus recession is an effective method for GO patients with newly-developed strabismus. Rectus resection may benefit some patients with undercorrection who underwent a maximal degree of rectus recession. Phosphodiesterase-4D (PDE4D) has emerged as a significant target for treating neuropsychiatric disorders, but no PET radioligand currently exists for robustly quantifying human brain PDE4D to assist biomedical research and drug discovery. A prior candidate PDE4D PET radioligand, namely [ 11 C]T1650, failed in humans because of poor time stability of brain PDE4D-specific signal (indexed by total volume of distribution), likely due to radiometabolites accumulating in brain. Its nitro group was considered to be a source of the brain radiometabolites. Methods: We selected 5 high-affinity and selective PDE4D inhibitors, absent of a nitro group, from our prior structure-activity relationship study for evaluation as PET radioligands. Results: All 5 radioligands were labeled with 11 C (half-time, 20.4 min) in useful yields and with high molar activity. All displayed sizable PDE4D-specific signals in rhesus monkey brain. Notably, [ 11 C]JMJ-81 and [ 11 C]JMJ-129 exhibited excellent time stability of signal (total volume of distribution). Furthermore, as an example, [ 11 C]JMJ-81 was found to be free of radiometabolites in ex vivo monkey brain, affirming that this radioligand can provide robust quantification of brain PDE4D with PET. Conclusion: Given their high similarity in structures and metabolic profiles, both [ 11 C]JMJ-81 and [ 11 C]JMJ-129 warrant further evaluation in human subjects. Blast-related traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a major cause of neurological disorders in the U.S. military that can adversely impact some civilian populations as well and can lead to lifelong deficits and diminished quality of life. Among these types of injuries, the long-term sequelae are poorly understood because of variability in intensity and number of the blast exposure, as well as the range of subsequent symptoms that can overlap with those resulting from other traumatic events (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder). Despite the valuable insights that rodent models have provided, there is a growing interest in using injury models using species with neuroanatomical features that more closely resemble the human brain. With this purpose, we established a gyrencephalic model of blast injury in ferrets, which underwent blast exposure applying conditions that closely mimic those associated with primary blast injuries to warfighters. In this study, we evaluated brain biochemical, microstructural, and behavioral profiles after blast exposure using in vivo longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging, histology, and behavioral assessments. In ferrets subjected to blast, the following alterations were found: 1) heightened impulsivity in decision making associated with pre-frontal cortex/amygdalar axis dysfunction; 2) transiently increased glutamate levels that are consistent with earlier findings during subacute stages post-TBI and may be involved in concomitant behavioral deficits; 3) abnormally high brain N -acetylaspartate levels that potentially reveal disrupted lipid synthesis and/or energy metabolism; and 4) dysfunction of pre-frontal cortex/auditory cortex signaling cascades that may reflect similar perturbations underlying secondary psychiatric disorders observed in warfighters after blast exposure., Competing Interests: No competing financial interests exist. Aims: To systematically evaluate whether bracing can effectively achieve curve regression in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), and to identify any predictors of curve regression after bracing., Methods: Two independent reviewers performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library to obtain all published information about the effectiveness of bracing in achieving curve regression in AIS patients. Search terms included "brace treatment" or "bracing," "idiopathic scoliosis," and "curve regression" or "curve reduction." Inclusion criteria were studies recruiting patients with AIS undergoing brace treatment and one of the study outcomes must be curve regression or reduction, defined as > 5° reduction in coronal Cobb angle of a major curve upon bracing completion. Exclusion criteria were studies including non-AIS patients, studies not reporting p-value or confidence interval, animal studies, case reports, case series, and systematic reviews. The GRADE approach to assessing quality of evidence was used to evaluate each publication., Results: After abstract and full-text screening, 205 out of 216 articles were excluded. The 11 included studies all reported occurrence of curve regression among AIS patients who were braced. Regression rate ranged from 16.7% to 100%. We found evidence that bracing is effective in achieving curve regression among compliant AIS patients eligible for bracing, i.e. curves of 25° to 40°. A similar effect was also found in patients with major curve sizes ranging from 40° to 60° when combined with scoliosis-specific exercises. There was also evidence showing that a low apical vertebral body height ratio, in-brace correction, smaller pre-brace Cobb angle, and daily pattern of brace-wear compliance predict curve regression after bracing., Conclusion: Bracing provides a corrective effect on scoliotic curves of AIS patients to achieve curve regression, given there is high compliance rate and the incorporation of exercises., Competing Interests: None declared., (© 2024 Tang et al.)

With the trend of device miniaturization, ultrathin ferroelectric films are gaining more and more attention. However, understanding ferroelectricity in this nanoscale context remains a formidable challenge, primarily due to the heightened relevance of surface effects, which often leads to the loss of net polarization. Here, the influence of surface effects on the polarization as a function of thickness in ultrathin BiFeO 3 films is investigated using phase-field simulations. The findings reveal a notable increase in ferroelectric polarization with increasing thickness, with a particularly discernible change occurring below the 10 nm threshold. Upon accounting for surface effects, the polarization is marginally lower than the case without such considerations, with the disparity becoming more pronounced at smaller thicknesses. Moreover, the hysteresis loop and butterfly loop of the ultrathin film were simulated, demonstrating that the ferroelectric properties of films remain robust even down to a thickness of 5 nm. Our investigations provide valuable insights into the significance of ferroelectric thin films in device miniaturization.

Construction of novel two-dimensional porous carbon nanosheets with superior electrochemical activity is of great challenge. Here, graphene/ZIF-8 nano-sandwiches derived N, P-codoped porous carbon nanosheets (N, P-codoped PCN) was easily obtained by sequential room temperature self-assembly and high-temperature carbonization method. Relative to the widely used physically exfoliated graphene nanosheets (GN) and graphene/ZIF-8 derived N-doped porous carbon nanosheets (N-doped PCN), N, P-codoped PCN displayed larger active surface, faster electron transport ability and stronger physical adsorption ability, which can be ascribed to the dual doping effect of heteroatoms N and P. As a result, N, P-codoped PCN exhibited remarkable oxidation signal enhancement for tumor marker (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine), analgesic and antipyretic drug (acetaminophen) and organic pesticide (benomyl). Besides, the limits of detection were measured as low as 1.58 nM, 7.50 nM and 2.10 nM with sensitivity of 270.00 μA μM -1  cm -2 , 757.14 μA μM -1  cm -2 and 272.86 μA μM -1  cm -2 for 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, acetaminophen and benomyl, respectively. Basing on this, a novel and highly sensitive electrochemical sensing platform was developed. Background: Artemisia is important medicinal plants in China and are widely used in medicine, agriculture, and food. Pharmacologically active components of the plants remain to be investigated., Methods: This study sought to identify and compare the chemical constituents of three species of Artemisia in Tibet using a widely-targeted metabolomics approach and their antibacterial and antioxidant capacities were determined., Result: A total of 1109 metabolites within 10 categories were detected from the three species of Artemisia, including lipids, amino acids, nucleotides, flavonoids, terpenes, coumarins, organic acids, and phenolic acids. 732 different metabolites have been identified between Artemisia sieversiana and Artemisia annua, 751 different metabolites were identified between Artemisia wellbyi and A. sieversiana, and 768 differential metabolites were differentially detected from A. wellbyi and A. annua. Differentially identified compounds included flavonoids, phenolic acids, artemisinins and coumarin. A. annua contained the highest relative content of artemisinin among three Artemisia. The antimicrobial experiments showed that the three Artemisia species had strong antibiotic activities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The biochemical analysis showed that the three species of Artemisia have strong antioxidant capacity., Conclusions: This is the first reported attempt to comparatively determine the types of the metabolites of the three widely distributed Artemisia species in Tibet. Objective: Swainsonine (SW) is the principal toxic ingredient of locoweeds, and is produced by multiple fungi. A key enzyme in the SW synthesis pathway is a hybrid swnk/nrps. To analyze the role of swnk in the SW biosynthesis pathway of Metarhizium anisopliae., Results: The concentration of SW and the swnk expression in M. anisopliae fermentation from 1st to 7th day were determined using LC-MS and RT-qPCR, respectively. M. anisopliae had the highest SW content and swnk expression on the 5th day of fermentation; Mutant strain (MT) were obtained by PEG-mediated homologous recombination (HR) which knocked out swnk in the wild-type (WT) strain. Complemented-type (CT) strain were obtained by transforming a modified PUC19 complementation vector containing the geneticin (G418) resistance gene and swnK. SW was not detected in the MT strain and reverted to its original level in the CT strain; A Psilent-1 plasmid with Benomyl (ben)-resistant that was used interfered with swnk of WT strain. The level of SW was markedly diminished in the RNAi strain. RNAi of swnk affects the formation of the cell wall in M. anisopliae., Conclusion: These results indicate that swnk plays a crucial role in the SW biosynthesis of M. anisopliae., (© 2023. Background/aims: We aimed to investigate the role and working mechanism of Homo sapiens circular RNA&#95;0003602 (hsa&#95;circ&#95;0003602) in colorectal cancer (CRC) development., Methods: The expression of circ&#95;0003602, miR-149-5p, and solute carrier family 38 member 1 (SLC38A1) was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RNase R assays were conducted to determine the characteristics of circ&#95;0003602. CCK-8 assays, flow cytometry analysis, transwell invasion assays, wound healing assays and tube formation assays were employed to evaluate cell viability, apoptosis, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis. All protein levels were examined by Western blot or immunohistochemistry assay. The glutamine metabolism was monitored by corresponding glutamine, α-ketoglutarate and glutamate assay kits. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was utilized to confirm the targeted combination between miR-149-5p and circ&#95;0003602 or SLC38A1. A xenograft tumor model was established to analyze the role of circ&#95;0003602 in CRC tumor growth in vivo., Results: Circ&#95;0003602 was upregulated in CRC tissues and cell lines. Circ&#95;0003602 silencing suppressed CRC cell viability, migration, invasion, angiogenesis, and glutaminolysis; induced cell apoptosis in vitro; and blocked tumor growth in vivo. Moreover, circ&#95;0003602 directly interacted with miR-149-5p to negatively regulate its expression, and circ&#95;0003602 knockdown suppressed the malignant behaviors of CRC cells largely by upregulating miR-149-5p. MiR-149-5p directly bound to the 3' untranslated region of SLC38A1 to induce its degradation, and miR-149-5p overexpression reduced the malignant potential of CRC cells largely by downregulating SLC38A1. Circ&#95;0003602 positively regulated SLC38A1 expression by sponging miR-149-5p in CRC cells., Conclusions: Circ&#95;0003602 knockdown impedes CRC development by targeting the miR-149-5p/SLC38A1 axis, which provides a novel theoretical basis and new insights for CRC treatment.

Background: This animal study aimed to explore the effects of patellar hypermobility and patellar dislocation on the developing femoral trochlea., Methods: Seventy-two 3-week-old Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups. The sham group (SG) underwent simple incision and suture of the skin and subcutaneous tissue; the patellar hypermobility group (PHG) underwent medial and lateral retinacular release and pie-crusting technique for the patellar ligament; the patellar dislocation group (PDG) underwent plication of the medial patellofemoral retinaculum. Twelve rats in each group were euthanized at 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively, respectively, and specimens were collected. The bony sulcus angle (BSA), cartilaginous sulcus angle (CSA), trochlear sulcus depth (TSD), and thickness of the cartilage on the lateral facet (CTL), medial facet (CTM), and center (CTC) of the trochlea were measured on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections., Results: In the PHG and PDG, the femoral condyles became blunt, the trochlear groove became shallower, and cartilage became thicker compared with the SG. Compared with the SG, the PHG and PDG had significantly larger BSA and CSA values at 3 (p < 0.05) and 6 weeks (p < 0.005), and a significantly shallower TSD (p < 0.05). At 3 weeks, all cartilage thicknesses in the PHG and the CTC and CTM in the PDG were significantly thinner than in the SG (PHG vs. SG: p = 0.009 for CTL, p < 0.001 for CTM, p = 0.003 for CTC; PDG vs. SG: p = 0.028 for CTC, p = 0.048 for CTM). At 6 weeks, the CTC was thicker in the PHG and PDG than the SG (PHG vs. SG: p = 0.044; PDG vs. SG: p = 0.027), and the CTL was thinner in the PDG than the SG (p = 0.044)., Conclusion: Patellar hypermobility and patellar dislocation may result in trochlear dysplasia that worsens with age. Objective: To compare and analyze the clinical characteristics between acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) and the hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome., Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The clinical data of 13 cases with AFLP and 34 cases with HELLP syndrome were collected from three tertiary referral centers in Yunnan (the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, and Yan'an Hospital of Kunming City) from January 2016 to December 2021. The patients were diagnosed to AFLP and HELLP syndrome according to the Swansea criteria and the Tennessee classification system. The general characteristics, clinical features, laboratory results within 24 hours after admission, complications, maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared to analysis the differences between the two groups., Results: (1) Maternal characteristics: compared with HELLP syndrome group, AFLP group had lower body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure at admission (both P < 0.01). (2) Clinical features: the most common symptoms in AFLP patients were skin jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, edema. The main manifestations of patients with HELLP syndrome were albuminuria, hypertension, edema, headache. Some patients had multiple symptoms concurrently. (3) Laboratory results: compared with HELLP syndrome group, the levels of platelet count (PLT), total bilirubin (TBil), direct bilirubin (DBil), γ-glutamyl transferase (γ-GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bile acid (TBA), serum creatinine (SCr) and international standardized ratio (INR) in AFLP group were significantly increased within 24 hours after admission [PLT (×10 9 /L): 107.69±51.13 vs.76.71±43.25,TBil (μmol/L): 121.60 (83.20, 170.00) vs.15.25 (7.22, 29.05), DBil (μmol/L): 86.50 (58.60, 104.00) vs. 4.30 (2.22,10.10), γ-GGT (U/L): 87.00 (37.00, 127.00) vs. 41.00 (19.00,64.42), ALP (U/L): 199.10 (109.00, 349.20) vs. 125.50 (90.50, 155.25), TBA (μmol/L): 51.50 (16.20, 117.40) vs. 4.15 (2.02, 6.95), SCr (μmol/L): 155.80 (129.00, 237.00) vs. 79.00 (65.43, 113.70), INR: 1.28 (1.17, 1.63) vs. 0.94 (0.88, 1.08), all P < 0.05], prothrombin time (PT) was significantly prolonged [seconds: 16.10 (14.50, 19.20) vs. 12.40 (11.43, 13.40), P < 0.05]. The level of blood glucose (GLU), fibrinogen (FIB) and the activity of antithrombin III (AT III) decreased significantly [GLU (mmol/L): 5.18±1.33 vs. 6.33±1.19, FIB (g/L): 1.96±1.46 vs. 3.81±1.58, AT III (%): 40.61±25.84 vs. 66.39±24.11, all P < 0.05]; (4) Complications: compared with HELLP syndrome group, the incidence of patients with hypoglycemia [30.77% (4/13) vs. 0% (0/34)], acute liver failure [53.85% (7/13) vs. 5.88% (2/34)], acute renal insufficiency [69.23% (9/13) vs. 8.82% (3/34)], coagulopathy [76.92% (10/13) vs. 38.24% (13/34)], disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) [53.85% (7/13) vs. 5.88% (2/34)], and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) [53.85% (7/13) vs. 5.88% (2/34)] were significantly higher in AFLP group (all P <0.05). (5) Maternal and neonatal outcome: all patients delivered after admission. The total length of hospital and intensive care unit stay were significantly longer in the AFLP group than in the HELLP syndrome group [days: 17.00 (11.00, 25.00) vs. 9.00 (7.00, 12.00), 12.00 (4.00, 22.00) vs. 3.91 (0, 7.00), both P < 0.01]. Two AFLP patients died, including one due to intracranial venous thrombosis and one due to multiple organ failure and cardiopulmonary arrest. There were no deaths in the HELLP syndrome group., Conclusions: There are significant differences in maternal characteristics, laboratory results and complications between AFLP and HELLP syndrome. TBil, γ-GGT, SCr, FIB, INR and AT III activity may help to distinguish the two diseases.

Background: Patellar dislocation can cause a series of changes in the trochlear groove and patella. However, the influence of patellar dislocation on the medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles and whether nerve growth factor (NGF) is beneficial to proprioceptive rehabilitation for patellar dislocation are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on VM and VL after the injection of NGF and early reduction in rabbits for patellar dislocation with electrophysiological and pathological analysis., Methods: Sixty 2-month-old rabbits were randomly divided into four groups (15 rabbits in each group). Rabbits in Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 underwent patellar dislocation surgery, and rabbits in Group 4 underwent sham surgery. One month later, patellar reduction was performed in Groups 1 and 2. NGF was injected into the rabbits of Group 1. The electrophysiological and pathological changes in VM and VL were analyzed at 1 month and 3 months after patellar reduction., Results: The electrophysiological and pathological indices in Groups 1 and 2 were significantly different from those in Group 3 at 1 and 3 months after patellar reduction. There were significant differences between NGF injection Group 1 and Group 2 without NGF injection. There was no significant difference between Group 1 and Group 4 at 3 months after patellar reduction., Conclusions: Patellar dislocation can cause abnormal electrophysiological and pathological effects on VM and VL. Patellar reduction should be performed as early as possible, and NGF injection may be beneficial to the rehabilitation of proprioception., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Biomass-derived carbon materials have received a surge of scientific attention to develop lightweight and broadband microwave absorbers. Herein, rodlike porous carbon materials derived from cotton have been fabricated with uniformly dispersed CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles via facile and scalable process. The combination of magnetic particles and carbonaceous material is advantageous to realize the magnetic-dielectric synergistic effect which could effectively promote the dissipation of incident waves, giving rise to an optimal reflection loss value of -48.2 dB over a qualified bandwidth (4.8 GHz) at 2.5 mm. The cotton-derived carbon rods with conductive network not only act as a supporter to carry the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles, but also provide massive heterointerfaces to facilitate the interfacial polarization. In consideration of the renewable and abundant resource of cotton, the as-prepared CoFe 2 O 4 /C composites would meet the increasing demand of lightweight and highly efficient microwave absorbers., (© 2022 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Background: The relationship between breech presentation and trochlear dysplasia has been confirmed. However, the pathological process of breech-related trochlear dysplasia remains unclear. This study aimed to establish an animal model to simulate breech presentation and to analyze the pathological process of the femoral trochlea., Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty neonatal rats were randomly assigned into a control group and two experimental groups that were swaddled (using surgical tape) to keep the hip flexed and knees extended to simulate human breech presentation for the 5 days (short Swaddling) and the 10 days (prolonged Swaddling) of life. Gross and cross-sectional observation, histological staining measurement in two experimental time points (5 and 10 days after birth) were conducted to evaluate the morphological changes of the femoral trochlea., Results: The incidence of trochlear dysplasia increased with the Swaddling time. Rats in the prolonged Swaddling group had the high prevalence of trochlea dysplasia (52 of 60), followed by short Swaddling group (42 of 60). Gross and cross-sectional observation showed a shallower trochlea groove in two experimental groups. Histologicalstaining measurement indicated that the trochlear sulcus angle and trochlear sulcus depth were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group since day 5 and day 10., Conclusion: In this model, breech presentation had an adverse effect on neonatal knees and could induce trochlear dysplasia. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked disorder caused by the lack of dystrophin with progressive degeneration of skeletal muscles. Most studies regarding DMD understandably focus on muscle, but dystrophin is also expressed in the central nervous system, potentially resulting in cognitive and behavioral changes. Animal models are being used for developing more comprehensive neuromonitoring protocols and clinical image acquisition procedures. The recently developed DMD rat is an animal model that parallels the progressive muscle wasting seen in DMD. Here, we studied the brain and temporalis muscle structure and neurochemistry of wild type (WT) and dystrophic (DMD) rats using magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. Both structural and neurochemistry alterations were observed in the DMD rat brain and the temporalis muscle. There was a decrease in absolute brain volume ( WT = 1579 mm 3 ; DMD = 1501 mm 3 ; p = 0.039, Cohen's d = 1.867), but not normalized ( WT = 4.27; DMD = 4.02; p = 0.306) brain volume. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) revealed structural alterations in the DMD temporalis muscle, with increased mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD). In the DMD rat thalamus, DTI revealed an increase in fractional anisotropy (FA) and a decrease in RD. Smaller normalized brain volume correlated to severity of muscle dystrophy ( r = -0.975). Neurochemical changes in the DMD rat brain included increased GABA and NAA in the prefrontal cortex, and GABA in the hippocampus. Such findings could indicate disturbed motor and sensory signaling, resulting in a dysfunctional GABAergic neurotransmission, and an unstable osmoregulation in the dystrophin-null brain., (Copyright © 2020 Xu, Tang, Li, Iyer and Lovering.)
