Between 1986 and 1997, 136 porous-coated anatomic (PCA) total hip arthroplasties were performed for patients with osteoarthritis of the hip, and data were available for 60 hips at final follow-up (mean follow-up, 15.2years). Of these, 18 hips had undergone revision: 12 for the acetabular component, 10 for the femoral component, and 4 for both components. Survival rate at 23years postoperatively was 60% for the acetabular component and 82% for the femoral component. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression showed that annual polyethylene wear rate, size, and abduction angle of the acetabular component were significantly associated with acetabular component revision surgery, and that annual polyethylene wear rate and filling ratio of the femur were associated with femoral component revision surgery.

The creation of innovative ideas is an essential part of business activities. However it is very difficult for many employees to come up with innovative ideas efficiently. This paper propose a system that supports users to create ideas by exploiting information available from online review sites based on the concept of Masakazu-Nakayama (NM) method, which is a well-known analogy based approach to creating new ideas. The key assumption is that the analogy between different product categories plays a central role in obtaining innovative ideas. Many famous inventions have actually resulted from transposing a technique or a concept used in one domain to another. The proposed system firstly calculates distances between product categories by their attributes using data obtained from review sites. The system then provides combinations of mutually similar product categories and the reasons for their similarities, so that users can utilize them as sources of new technological insights. We carried out experiments using real life data and found that the system successfully provides novel and useful analogies.

A system that records daily conversations is one of the most useful types of lifelogs. It is, however, not widely used due to the low precision of speech recognizers when applied to conversations. To solve this problem, we propose a method that uses a topic model to reduce incorrectly recognized words. Specifically, we measure relevancy between a term and the other words in the conversation and remove those that come below the threshold. An audio lifelog search system was implemented using the method. Experiments showed that our method is effective in compensating recognition errors of speech recognizers. We observed increase in both precision and recall. The results indicate that our method has an ability to reduce errors in the index of a lifelog search system.

The use of text mining for obtaining new knowledge from historical documents has gained wide attention in humanities research. We propose a method of revealing and visualizing relationships between historical persons using locational information expressed in historical documents. For each person, a vector of co-occurring place names is constructed. We then clustered persons using this vector in the K-means algorithm. We conducted experiments using Hyohanki, a diary written by an aristocrat in the classical era. The result showed that the obtained clusters match well with historically meaningful groups, indicating the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Video sharing sites on the web offer a great amount of video contents, and some of them provide a facility for users to attach comments directly onto the video content. These comments let users know the content without seeing the video itself. In this paper, we propose a method for clustering the videos using the comments attached to them. We used the hybrid method of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and probabilistic latent semantic indexing (PLSI) for clustering. The method converts a higher dimension matrix into a lower one and finds topics in comments. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of the hybrid method was better than using only NMF.

Searching images from the World Wide Web in order to know what an object looks like is a very common task. The best response for such a task is to present the most typical image of the object. Existing web-based image search engines, however, return many results that are not typical. In this paper, we propose a method for obtaining typical images through estimating parameters of a generative model. Specifically, we assume that typicality is represented by combinations of symbolic features, and express it using the aspect model, which is a generative model with discrete latent and observable variables. Symbolic features used in our implementation are the existences of specific colors in the object region of the image. The estimated latent variables are filtered and the one that best expresses typicality is selected. Based on the proposed method, we implemented a system that ranks the images in the order of typicality. Experiments showed the effectiveness of our method.

We have developed a system for helping users to determine the trustworthiness of uncertain facts based on sentiment and temporal viewpoints by aggregating information from the Web. Our goal is not to determine whether uncertain facts are true or false, but to provide users with additional data on which the trustworthiness of the information can be determined. The system shows with what sentiment and in what context facts are mentioned on the Web and displays any temporal change in the fact's popularity. Furthermore, the system extracts counter facts and analyzes them in the same way. The majority of 1000 users who evaluated our system found it to be a useful tool for helping to determine the trustworthiness of facts from various viewpoints.

The rapidly increasing use of geographically restrictive web search has made determination of the geographic relevance of web content an important task. We have developed a method that uses Gaussian mixture models to estimate the geographic relevance of web pages and arbitrary topics and have implemented a visualization interface that maps pages and topics to geographic space. The system enables the user to retrieve web pages and topics expressed on the Web that are relevant to an arbitrary geographic area.

Increased usage of Web search engines in our daily lives means that the trustworthiness of searched results has become crucial. User studies on the usage of search engines and analysis of the factors used to determine trust that users have in search results are described in this paper. Based on the analysis, we developed a system to help users determine the trustworthiness of Web search results by computing and showing each returned page's topic majority, topic coverage, locality of supporting pages (i.e., pages linked to each search result) and other information. The measures proposed in the paper can be applied to the search of Web-based libraries or can be useful in the usage of digital library search systems.

This paper presents a method to extract appearance descriptions for a given set of objects. Conversion between an object name and its appearance descriptions is useful for various applications, such as searching for an unknown object, memory recall support, and car/walk navigation. The method is based on text mining applied to Web search results. Using a manually constructed dictionary of visual modifiers, our system obtains a set of pairs of a visual modifier and a component/class for a given name of object, which best describe its appearance. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method in discovering appearance descriptions of various types of objects.

If the user wants to know trustworthiness of a proposition, such as whether gthe Japanese Prime Minister is Junichiro Koizumih is true or false, conventional search engines are not appropriate. We therefore propose a system that helps the user to determine trustworthiness of a statement that he or she is unconfident about. In our research, we estimate trustworthiness of a proposition by aggregating knowledge from the Web and analyzing creation time of web pages. We propose a method to estimate popularity from temporal viewpoint by analyzing how many pages discussed the proposition in a certain period of time and how continuously it appeared on the Web.

Mobile Web search engines as well as fixed ones become much more important for our Web access in the near future. However, mobile computing environments have troublesome limitations, as compared with traditional desktop computing environments. In order to solve the so-called "mismatched query problem" due to more shortness and ambiguity of mobile users' original queries, this paper proposes a novel method for context-aware query refinement based on their current geographic location and real-world contexts which are inferred from the place-names representing the location and the Web as a knowledge database

Integration of Web search with geographic information has recently attracted much attention. There are a number of local Web search systems enabling users to find location-specific Web content. In this paper, however, we point out that this integration is still at a superficial level. Most local Web search systems today only link local Web content to a map interface. They are extensions of a conventional stand-alone geographic information system (GIS), applied to a Web-based client-server architecture. In this paper, we discuss the directions available for tighter integration of Web search with a GIS, in terms of extraction, knowledge discovery, and presentation. We also describe implementations to support our argument that the integration must go beyond the simple map-and hyperlink architecture.

We have implemented a system that re-ranks Web search results based on three measures: first-appearance term distance, minimum term distance, and local appearance density. Furthermore, the system enables the user to assign weights to the new rank and original ranks so that the result can be presented in order of the combined rank. We built a prototype user interface in which the user can dynamically change the weights on two different ranks. The result of the experiment showed that our method improves the precision of Web search results for two-keyword queries.

Advances in dynamic map interfaces have turned maps into interactive media. These dynamic interfaces respond to users' operations in real time, and present fully visualized geographic information. However, the current systems have only reacted to explicitly specified user intentions. For example, users have been required to elaborately specify visible layers to fully utilize a map interface. In contrast, we propose a method of adjusting the way a map interface is presented by estimating the users' intentions based on their operation history. By reducing their operations, the system facilitates the use of maps especially for novices. It is especially effective in online or mobile map interfaces, where it is difficult to adjust the presentation of the map interface, due to the limited bandwidth and the size of the interface. This paper specifically focuses on the trajectory, which is a series of panning operations, and discusses our inference of users' implicit intentions.

It has recently become a common practice for people to post their sightseeing experiences on weblogs (blogs). Their blog entries often contain valuable information for potential tourists, who can learn about various aspects not found on the official websites of sightseeing spots. Bloggers provide images, videos and texts regarding the places they visited. This implies that popular travel routes could be extracted according to the information available in blogs. In this paper, we describe a system that extracts typical visitor's travel routes based on blog entries and that presents multimedia content relevant to those routes. Typical travel routes are extracted by using a sequential pattern mining method. We also introduce a new user interface for presenting multimedia content along the route in a proactive manner. The system works as an automatically generated tour guide accessible from a PC or a mobile device.

Based on recent studies, the most common queries in Web searches involve one or two keywords. While most Web search engines perform very well for a single-keyword query, their precisions is not as good for queries involving two or more keywords. Search results often contain a large number of pages that are only weakly relevant to either of the keywords. One solution is to focus on the proximity of keywords in the search results. A novel approach to Web browsing called "WebDriving" is described that automatically extracts information from the Web and places it in a 3D space, enabling children to easily view the information while “driving through the 3D world”. The user can visualize not only the target Web page, but also the "peripheral information" (that is, linked and other related pages) in the same 3D world. This makes the user aware of other relevant Web pages while browsing the target Web page. Our WebDriving browser is well suited for theme-based “investigative learning”, which is now being promoted at many elementary schools in Japan.

Media content presented to a vehicle driver is mainly auditory, since visual content is distracting and viewing it increases the risk of an accident. Music and radio are thus commonly listened to while driving. However, these types of content rarely reflect regional characteristics and are therefore not well suited for tourists who want to get information about the region they are visiting. We have developed the Blog Car Radio system that presents blog entries in auditory style using sonification (speech synthesis). Blog entries are obtained from blog search engines, selected by distances from the vehicle’s current location, and ranked based on their suitability for sonification and relevance to the userspecified category. By using Blog Car Radio, a driver can obtain local information with only a small amount of distraction. In this paper, we particularly discussed the method to rank text contents which is suitable for sonification.

An image-based opportunistic Web browser called "WebDriving" is described that automatically and continuously visualizes the "peripheral information space". It extracts the images from the current Web page, its link-destination pages, and other related pages and uses them to dynamically construct a 3D space. This enables the user to concurrently browse not only the images on the current Web page but also the images in the peripheral information space. The user browses these images by "driving a car through the constructed 3D world". The user thus becomes aware of other relevant Web pages while browsing the current page, which is a form of "opportunistic browsing". An experiment in which elementary school pupils used the WebDriving browser demonstrated that they could use it to effectively obtain information because it enabled them to intuitively understand a Web space, the functions of a Web browser, and Web search.

This paper discusses the dynamic presentation of heterogeneous spatio-temporal content along a trajectory. Applications based on this scheme provide users with the ability to view target information and its surrounding context together in an opportunistic manner. We discuss various types of triggers contained in a trajectory that induce dynamic changes in content. We describe different implementations based on this scheme.

Digital libraries are currently growing rapidly in number and size, covering various fields. However, despite the great deal of intellectual effort and large budgets necessary for their construction, digital libraries are often limited to use by specialists. We describe a framework that will attract more users to digital libraries through enhancing the presentation layers. We propose the guiding principle to such enhancement, the Sightseeing Metaphor Framework (SF), which is a structure based on user activities during sightseeing. We exemplify it in a Web-based regional information presentation system. The evaluation we did for an elementary school classroom revealed that the system created a better impression on the students compared to an existing presentation scheme.

In order to utilize geographic web information for digital city applications, we have been developing a geographic web search system, KyotoSEARCH. When users retrieve geographic information on the web, specifying geographic location is an essential function. However, most current web search systems do not utilize location information sufficiently well to identify the user's intentions; available methods employ just keywords (for location names) and limited map functions. Furthermore, most map interfaces are used to select a determined geographic-hierarchy level or point to a specific location (sometimes specifying a radius). In this paper, we introduce two-dimensional range query processing for geographic web search, where users are able to specify a geographic area freely on a map interface. In order to handle such range queries more rapidly and efficiently, we adopt geometric operations to retrieve proper web pages. Without optimization techniques, however, the recall and precision of the search results become very low. Major problems come from erroneous extension of the computed geographic area due to i) same names for different geographic objects/locations (geowords), ii) redundant geographic hierarchy information, and iii) existence of non-important geowords. By resolving these problems, we can improve range query processing for geographic data. To that end, we propose an effective geographic scope optimization method for that supports geometric operations in geographic web search; experiments conducted on an implemented system are described.

Regional web search engines provide users with spatially restricted web contents. We propose a time-specific regional web search engine, where users can retrieve both spatially and temporally restricted information from the Web, i.e. a description of a shop available at certain time in a certain region. Because there are many web pages containing descriptions of more than one geographic entity, a matching mechanism of spatial and temporal attributes is required. We used HTML tag structures to make matches between addresses and temporal interval expressions. Based on the extracted result, map-based visual interface was implemented.

Dealing with prepositions such as "near", "between" and "in front of" is very important in geographic information systems (GISs). In most systems, real-world distances are used to handle these prepositions. One of the difficulties in processing these prepositions lies in the fact that their geographical range is distorted in people's cognitive maps. For example, the size of an area referred to by the preposition "near" gets narrowed when a more famous landmark exists right next to the base geographical object. This is because users are likely to choose the most famous landmark when referring to a certain position. Also, the area referred to by "between" is not a straight line; it curves along the most commonly used pathway between the base objects. The difference in the popularity of geographical objects is the main reason for causing such distortions in cognitive maps. Since there is a large amount of data on the World Wide Web, we believe that such conceptual distortion can be calculated by analyzing Web data. Popularity and co-occurrence rates are calculated through their frequency in Web resources. Inference rules are set to restrict the target of conceptual prepositions using GISs and information obtained from the Web.

Since spikes are considered to be the fundamental element in neural systems, there has been a significant amount of work that analyzes the sequence of spike timings, or spike trains [1,2]. One important research question is to know how information is encoded in a spike train. There is an approach to construct a feature space that captures characteristics of spike trains, as is usually done in the field of pattern recognition. Another approach, which is increasingly becoming popular in recent years, is to find an appropriate similarity measure between spike trains [3,4]. This corresponds to constructing a model of information decoding done by the postsynaptic neurons. One promising way to define such similarity measures is to use positive definite kernels [5-7]. Since positive definite kernels are generalizations of inner products, they enable application of various linear methods used in machine learning (including regression, classification, and dimension reduction) to spike trains. Positive definite kernels are extensively used in kernel methods. While positive definite kernels on spike trains obtained from a single neuron have already been proposed [5-7], the extension of this to parallel spike trains obtained from multiple neurons has not been explored yet. Therefore, we defined such a kernel by extending the memoryless cross intensity kernel (mCI kernel) proposed by Paiva et al. [5]. To make the extension as natural as possible, we used a linear combination of cross-neuron interactions. We name the new kernel the linear combination of interactions kernel (LCIK) [9]. The parameters of the kernel can be set to make it positive definite. We applied this kernel to publicly available in vivo recordings taken from the primary visual field in macaque monkey brains [8]. The LCIK performed better than other possible kernels defined on a set of spike trains. When the parameters of the kernel were estimated using spike trains obtained from real neurons, we obtained biologically plausible values. For example, the estimated time constant was near the value commonly used in neural modeling. This indicates the possibility of using such kernels to look for an appropriate model of neurons based on observed spike recordings. We also simulated a simple neural network and generated spike trains to see the effect on the estimated values of the kernel parameters by changing the synaptic connection parameters. The result indicated that the kernel indirectly represents some of the internal parameters of the neural networks.

International audience; Online social networks are currently experiencing a peak and they resemble real platforms of social conversion and content delivery. Indeed, they are exploited in many ways: from conducting public opinion polls about any political issue to planning big social events for a large public. To securely perform these large-scale computations, current protocols use a simple secret sharing scheme which enables users to obfuscate their inputs. However, these protocols require a minimum number of friends, i.e. the minimum degree of the social graph should be not smaller than a given threshold. Often this condition is not satisfied by all social graphs. Yet we can reuse these graphs after some structural modifications consisting in adding new friendship relations. In this paper, we provide the first definition and theoretical analysis of the ''\emph{adding friends}'' problem. We formally describe this problem that, given a graph $G$ and parameter $c$, asks for the graph satisfying the threshold $c$ that results from $G$ with the minimum of edge-addition operations. We present algorithms for solving this problem in centralized social networks. An experimental evaluation on real-world social graphs demonstrates that our protocols are accurate and inside the theoretical bounds.

Modern environmental monitoring systems are being envisioned as constellations of tiny smart sensors, densely deployed on the territory to be monitored. Data provided by such sensors is meaningless if it is not equipped with information about the context to which it refers. Such a context is mainly related to the location of sensors, which allows to manage collected data by means of Geographic Information Systems. Due to scarce resources of tiny sensors characteristics, localization services are usually range-free and based on simple measurements provided by the majority of radio chips, such as the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). However, existing solutions suffer of inaccuracy issues, due to the unreliability of the adopted indicators. This article proposes a range-free localization algorithm based on data fusion, which combines the RSSI with the Power of Transmission (PoT), by estimating the RSSI at different PoT levels. We show, through experimentation on real tiny devices, how this simple solution allows reducing the localization error to about 16% with respect to state-of-art algorithms.
