The growing understanding of the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in embryo-maternal communication has sparked considerable interest in their therapeutic potential within assisted reproductive technology, particularly in enhancing implantation success. However, the major obstacle remains the large-scale production of EVs, and there is still a gap in understanding how different culture systems affect the characteristics of the EVs. In the current study, trophoblast analogue human chorionic carcinoma cell line was cultivated in both conventional monolayer culture (2D) and as spheroids in suspension culture (3D) and how the cell growth environment affects the physical, biochemical and cellular signalling properties of EVs produced by them was studied. Interestingly, the 3D system was more active in secreting EVs compared to the 2D system, while no significant differences were observed in terms of morphology, size, and classical EV protein marker expression between EVs derived from the two culture systems. There were substantial differences in the proteomic cargo profile and cellular signalling potency of EVs derived from the two culture systems. Notably, 2D EVs were more potent in inducing a cellular response in endometrial epithelial cells (EECs) compared to 3D EVs. Therefore, it is essential to recognize that the biological activity of EVs depends not only on the cell of origin but also on the cellular microenvironment of the parent cell. Aim: The integration of advanced technologies, including three-dimensional (3D) imaging modalities and virtual simulations, has significantly influenced contemporary approaches to preoperative planning in implant dentistry. Through a meticulous analysis of relevant studies, this review synthesizes findings related to accuracy outcomes in implant placement facilitated by 3D imaging in virtual patients., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across relevant databases to identify relevant studies published to date. The inclusion criteria were studies utilizing 3D imaging techniques, virtual patients, and those focusing on the accuracy of dental implant planning and surgical placement. The selected studies were critically appraised for their methodological quality., Results: After a rigorous analysis, 21 relevant articles were included out of 3021 articles. This study demonstrates the versatility and applicability of these technologies in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Integrating Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), cone bean computed tomography (CBCT), and advanced 3D reconstruction methodologies showcases a trend toward enhanced precision in implant planning and placement. Notably, the evaluation parameters varied, encompassing distances, discrepancies, and deviations in the implant placement. The ongoing integration of systems such as dynamic navigation systems, augmented reality, and sophisticated software platforms shows a promising trajectory for the continued refinement of virtual reality applications in dental implantology, providing valuable insights for future research and clinical implementation. Moreover, using stereolithographic surgical guides, virtual planning with CBCT data, and 3D-printed templates consistently demonstrates enhanced precision in dental implant placement compared to traditional methods., Conclusion: The synthesis of the available evidence underscores the substantial positive impact of 3D imaging techniques and virtual patients on dental implant planning and surgical placement accuracy. Introduction: Three-dimensional (3D) histology analyses are essential to overcome sampling variability and understand pathological differences beyond the dissection axis. We present Path2MR, the first pipeline allowing 3D reconstruction of sparse human histology without a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reference. We implemented Path2MR with post-mortem hippocampal sections to explore pathology gradients in Alzheimer's disease., Methods: Blockface photographs of brain hemisphere slices are used for 3D reconstruction, from which an MRI-like image is generated using machine learning. Histology sections are aligned to the reconstructed hemisphere and subsequently to an atlas in standard space., Results: Path2MR successfully registered histological sections to their anatomic position along the hippocampal longitudinal axis. Combined with histopathology quantification, we found an expected peak of tau pathology at the anterior end of the hippocampus, whereas amyloid-beta (Aβ) displayed a quadratic anterior-posterior distribution., Conclusion: Path2MR, which enables 3D histology using any brain bank data set, revealed significant differences along the hippocampus between tau and Aβ., Highlights: Path2MR enables three-dimensional (3D) brain reconstruction from blockface dissection photographs. Background: Classification of the spinal deformity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains two-dimensional (2D) as the spinal radiographs remain the mainstay in clinical evaluation of the disease. 3D classification systems are proposed, however are time consuming. We here aim to evaluate the clinical application of a 3D classification system by the use of only posterior-anterior and lateral radiographs in Lenke 1 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).Methods: Forty Lenke 1 AIS were classified by five observers following a three-step flowchart, developed based on our previous 3D classification system. This 3D classification characterizes the curve in the frontal and sagittal views and infers the third dimension with rules based on prior data to determine the 3D subtypes of the curve. Repeated rating was performed for 20 randomly selected patients in the same cohort. In addition to the classification by the raters, the 3D model of the spines were generated to determine the actual curve subtype based on the algorithm that was originally used to develop the 3D classification system. The interobserver and intraobserver reliability and the classification accuracy were determined for both 3D and axial classifications of the cohort.Results: The interobserver reliability was moderate to strong with a kappa value between 0.61-0.89 for 3D and axial classifications. Comparing the mathematical classification and the raters' classification, the classification accuracy among all raters ranged between 56 and 89%.Conclusion: We evaluated the reliability of a previously developed 3D classification system for Lenke 1 AIS patients when only two-view spinal radiographs are available. Radiologists and orthopedic surgeons were able to identify the 3D subtypes of Lenke 1 AIS from the patients' radiographs with moderate to strong reliability. Purpose: The treatment of olecranon fracture-dislocations (OFDs) remains challenging. OFDs are often misdiagnosed as Monteggia lesions, and the real frequency is actually higher. However, studies on OFDs are limited. This study aimed to report on the surgical management of OFDs and to highlight the importance of three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) evaluation in the treatment of OFDs.Materials and Methods: The study participants included 18 patients (11 men, 7 women, mean age 44 years (range 24-78) with OFDs. Each patient's medical records, radiographs, and 3D CT scans were reviewed for demographics, injury details, operative findings, and information about radiological and functional outcomes. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the direction of the dislocation: the posterior dislocation group (group 1, 7 patients) and anterior dislocation group (group 2, 11 patients). The clinical evaluation was performed according to Broberg-Morrey and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons-Elbow (ASES-E) scoring systems.Results: The mean follow-up period was 39 months (range 25-62 months). The Broberg-Morrey results were excellent in 4, good in 9, fair in 3, and poor in 2 patients. The mean ASES-E score was 84.83 (range 48-100) points. There were signs of ulna-humeral arthrosis in 5 elbows. Arthrosis was graded as grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 in 3, 1, and 1 elbows, respectively. Partial sensory recovery was observed in one patient with postoperative ulnar neuropathy at the last follow-up visit.Conclusions: OFDs are complex injuries of the proximal ulna and may involve the radial head, coronoid process, and lateral collateral ligament. The effective treatment of OFDs begins with the proper identification of the injury with 3D CT. A secure fixation including the coronoid process is mandatory for the elbow joint stability. Insufficient restoration of the trochlear notch may lead to problems with loss of motion and arthrosis. Although an application of a pre-contoured locking anatomical olecranon plate can simplify the fixation procedure in most cases, the surgeons' equipment should also include radial head implant, coronoid plates, headless screws, small cannulated screw system, suture anchors, fluoroscopy, and articulated external fixator. Introduction: India struggles with poor quality of medical education, incompetent medical workforces, and insignificant research contribution to the world. Aim: Teaching-learning methods form an integral part of any curriculum hence, we aim to review the application of technology in teaching-learning methods at medical institutions across the world. Materials and Methods: An online search for articles and abstracts published from 2000 to 2020 on PubMed Central, Medline, Scopus, Google scholar using the MeSH terms like medical, education, innovative teaching, three dimensional, curriculum, etc., was conducted. A total of 49 articles were shortlisted by applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 38 articles were finally selected after thorough reading and were analysed and summarised. Results: Four themes emerged from this review: understanding learner characteristics; innovative newer techniques with the incorporation of advanced technology; cast models and plastination; and future trends for medical education. The more specific findings can be further divided into: online digital learning module; flip classroom; 3D printed models; 3D virtual reality-based technology; simulation techniques; real patient learning practical’s; medical student collaborative clinics; student-driven undergraduate research committee; patientfamily interactive programs; death-and-dying discussions and community-based service project. Conclusion: Amendment in the curriculum and selection of teaching-learning methods should be considered after understanding the student characteristics. Modern technology should be used rationally in teaching-learning methods thereby, restricting its negative impact on the students.

Aim. To investigate the effect of changes in incisor tip, apex movement, and inclination on skeletal points A and B and characterize changes in skeletal points A and B to the soft tissue points A and B after incisor retraction in Angle Class I bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion. Methods. Twenty-two patients with Angle Class I bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion treated with four first premolar extractions were included in this study. The displacement of skeletal and soft tissue points A and B was measured using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using a three-dimensional coordinate system. The movement of the upper and lower incisors was also measured using CBCT-synthesized lateral cephalograms. Results. Changes in the incisal tip, apex, and inclination after retraction did not significantly affect the position of points A and B in any direction (x, y, z). Linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between skeletal point A and soft tissue point A on the anteroposterior axis (z). Skeletal point A moved forward by 0.07 mm, and soft tissue point A moved forward by 0.38 mm, establishing a ratio of 0.18: 1 (r = 0.554, p < 0.01). Conclusion. The positional complexion of the skeletal points A and B was not directly influenced by changes in the incisor tip, apex, and inclination. Although the results suggest that soft tissue point A follows the anteroposterior position of skeletal point A, its clinical significance is suspected. Thus, hard and soft tissue analysis should be considered in treatment planning.

A modified invasion assay using a three-dimensional collagen gel was developed that enables isolation of invasive living cells; it was named the invading cell trapping (iCT) assay. A small cell strainer consisting of a nylon mesh with 40-μm2 pores was used, and collagen gel layers formed across the membrane. Test cells were seeded in the lower gel layer and invasive cells were attracted upward and trapped in the upper gel. After incubation, the collagen gel layers in cell strainers were easily separated and living cells in the gel were counted and analyzed. An advantage of the iCT assay is that it can capture living invasive cells in the upper gel while leaving noninvasive ones in the lower layer. Further enrichment of the two cell populations can be achieved by repeating the assay. Thus, the iCT assay allows comparative analysis of invasive versus noninvasive cells.

Abstract Background Clinically there are different fixation methods used for fixation of the posterior malleolar fractures (PMF), but the best treatment modality is still not clear. Few studies have concentrated on this issue, least of all using a biomechanical comparison. The purpose of this study was to carry out a computational comparative biomechanics of three different commonly used fixation constructs for the fixation of PMF by finite element analysis (FEA). Methods Computed tomography (CT) images were used to reconstruct three dimensional (3D) model of the tibia. Computer aided design (CAD) software was used to design 3D models of PMF. Finally, 3D models of PMF fixed with two antero-posterior (AP) lag screws, two postero-anterior (PA) lag screws and posterior plate were simulated through computational processing. Simulated loads of 500 N, 1000 N and 1500 N were applied to the PMF and proximal ends of the models were fixed in all degrees of freedom. Output results representing the model von Mises stress, relative fracture micro-motion and vertical displacement of the fracture fragment were analyzed. Results The mean vertical displacement value in the posterior plate group (0.52 mm) was lower than AP (0.68 mm) and PA (0.69 mm) lag groups. Jujube is widely cultivated in China because of their extremely high nutritional value and medical value. With the increase of the planting area, the shortcomings of manual management have become increasingly prominent, and it is urgent to realize the information management of jujube orchards. With the rise of smart agriculture, computer technology and agricultural production are combined to build digital agriculture. To realize the intelligent pruning of jujube trees, a three-dimensional reconstruction of jujube trees in Xinjiang was carried out. This study proposed a three-dimensional reconstruction method of fruit trees under a natural lighting environment based on point cloud registration. Moreover, aiming at the strict requirements of the spatial position of the registered point cloud, an improved point cloud registration algorithm was proposed based on the traditional Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm for the strict requirements of the spatial position of the registered point cloud. Firstly, color images and depth images of fruit trees from different perspectives were collected by using an RGB-D camera, and point cloud acquisition under corresponding perspectives was achieved through information fusion. Secondly, Data preprocessing of fruit trees’ each piece of point cloud was carried out for background removing and original point cloud de-noising based on depth distance judgment and spare noise filtering methods respectively. The region of interest was extracted by setting the segmentation threshold based on the histogram of the number of point clouds, and accordingly, each relative accurate data set was obtained as the jujube tree’s point cloud in each specific perspective. Then, there were three target balls which were artificial markers near the root, and the artificial marking method was used to realize the initial cloud registration of the two sites. Finally, on the basis of initial registration, the surface normal vector and curvature of the point cloud were calculated, and the points with similar curvature formed a pair of points. The kd-tree was used to establish a high-dimensional index tree data structure to structure to decrease the cost of running time of point cloud registration. Then, the ICP algorithm was used to complete precise registration. The registered point cloud was triangulated using the Alpha-shape algorithm to achieve surface reconstruction. The above-mentioned methods of initial registration and precise registration were used to globally register multiple jujube trees and completely reconstruct the three-dimensional model of fruit trees. The experimental results showed that by introducing the initial registration, the accuracy and stability of the point cloud registration were effectively improved. The registration error was controlled within 1.0 cm, and the average registration error was 0.76 cm. The reconstructed model had a strong sense of reality and was closer to the real-world tree in appearance. The relative error between the ground truth of the branch and the reconstructed value was controlled within 7%, and the accuracy of the reconstructed model was higher. The effects of acute changes during hemodialysis (HD) on the myocardium are not yet known. The invention of three‐dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) has offered clinicians a new method to assess the movements of ventricular segments simultaneously in three spatial directions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of first weekly standard HD process on the left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV) global and regional myocardial function in patients with normal left ventricle ejection fraction using 3DSTE‐derived indices. Patients (n=38) receiving maintenance HD in our clinic who have no known cardiovascular disease are examined just before and after a HD session using 3DSTE. Demographic and comorbidity data, renal replacement treatment characteristics, and laboratory test results are recorded. 3DSTE analysis is performed to calculate the LV global longitudinal, circumferential area and radial peak systolic strain, as well as RV septum and free‐wall longitudinal strain and fractional area change. Patients are aged 52.8 ± 13.6 years and 52.6% of them are male. Mean dialysis duration is 56 months. The LV strain values of the patients changed markedly before and after HD (GLS: −14.2 ± 5.2, −11.1 ± 4.6 [P <.001], GCS: −14.8 ± 4.2, −12.4 ± 5.28 [P <.009]; GRS: 41.5 ± 16, 33.3 ± 16.5 [P =.003]; AREA −24.7 ± 7.2, −20.1 ± 7.6 [P =.001], respectively). We could not demonstrate any improvement in RV strain values before or after HD. LV strain values are positively correlated with blood pressure variability during the dialysis sessions. LV function is preserved better after HD in patients on beta or calcium channel blocker therapy compared to those who do not use these agents (P <.001, P <.01, respectively). Selective image segmentation is a task of extracting one object of interest among many others in an image based on minimal user input. Several three-dimensional (3-D) selective models were proposed and they would find local minimizer because of their non-convex formulation, hence they are sensitive to initialization. This paper presents a new formulation for 3-D convex selective segmentation model. In order to solve the developed 3-D model, a projection algorithm is proposed. Numerical tests show that the proposed model is effective in segmenting 3-D complex image structures and allowing a global minimizer to be found independently of initialization. In this work, we study the regularity criterion for the 3D incompressible MHD equations. By making use of the structure of the system, we obtain a criterion that is imposed on the magnetic vector field and only one component of the velocity vector field, both in scaling invariant spaces. Moreover, the norms imposed on the magnetic vector field are the Lebesgue and anisotropic Lebesgue norms. A new attempt has been made to analyze the different combinations of Water and Ethylene Glycol with hybrid nanoparticles. A comparative analysis has been performed using two distinct fluids namely A l 2 O 3 / W a t e r − E G (nanofluid) and A l 2 O 3 − C u / W a t e r − E G (hybrid nanofluid) on three-dimensional tensile surface with flow and heat dissipations. The proposed thermal conductivity of A l 2 O 3 − W a t e r / E G nanofluid is compared with the experimental data which gives an amazing correlation. The reduced complicated nonlinear equations are solved numerically with the proportion of 20% water and 80% EG as base fluid. It is noted that as the volume fraction ( ϕ 1 ) increases, the stream flow gets broader as it propagates especially more for hybrid nanofluid than the formal nanofluid. It is notable that the physical factors like ϕ 1 , ϕ 2 , λ , H s , S and R d try to emphasize the interaction and assist to enhance in heat transfer rate. Purpose: The trochlear dysplastic femur has a specific morphotype previously characterised by not only dysplastic features of the trochlea but also by specific features of the notch and posterior femur. In this study the morphology of the tibia and patella was investigated to gain further insight in the complete geometrical complexity of the trochlear dysplastic knee.Methods: Arthro-CT scan-based 3D models of 20 trochlear dysplastic and 20 normal knees were uniformly scaled and landmarks and landmark-based reference planes were created to quantify a series of morphometric characteristics of the tibia and patella.Results: In the mediolateral direction, the 3D-analysis revealed a 3% smaller medial tibial plateau (30.4 ± 1.6 mm vs 31.5 ± 1.6 mm), a 3% smaller overall width of the tibial plateau (73.6 ± 2.0 mm vs 75.7 ± 2.0 mm), a 16% smaller medial facet (17.3 ± 2.2 mm vs 20.1 ± 1.3 mm) and a 4% smaller overall width of the patella (41.7 ± 2.5 mm vs 43.4 ± 2.3 mm) in trochlear dysplastic knees. In the anteroposterior direction, the lateral tibial plateau of trochlear dysplastic knees was 5% larger (37.2 ± 2.3 mm vs 35.5 ± 3.1 mm). A correlation test between the width of the femur and the width of the tibia revealed that trochlear dysplastic knees show less correspondence between the femur and tibia compared to normal knees.Conclusion: Significant differences in the morphology of the tibial plateau and patella were detected between trochlear dysplastic and normal knees. Both in the trochlear dysplastic tibial plateau and patella a narrower medial compartment leads to a significant smaller overall mediolateral width. Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) is a new technology platform that enables real time three dimensional (3D) visualisation of endovascular guidewires and catheters, based on the concepts of fibre optic technology instead of fluoroscopy. Anatomical context is provided by means of co-registered prior anatomical imaging, such as digital subtraction angiography or computed tomography. This preclinical study assesses the safety and feasibility of FORS technology. Six physicians performed endovascular tasks in a phantom model and a porcine model using FORS enabled floppy guidewires, Cobra-2 catheters and Berenstein catheters. Each physician performed a set of predefined tasks in both models, including setup of the FORS system, device registration, and 12 aortic and peripheral target vessel cannulation tasks. The evaluation of the FORS system was based on (i) target vessel cannulation success; (ii) safety assessment; (iii) the accuracy of the FORS based device visualisation; and (iv) user experience. Successful cannulation was achieved in 72 of the 72 tasks (100%) in the phantom model and in 70 of the 72 tasks (97%) in the porcine model. No safety issues were reported. The FORS based device visualisation had a median offset at the tip of 2.2 mm (interquartile range 1.2–3.8 mm). The users judged the FORS based device visualisation to be superior to conventional fluoroscopic imaging, while not affecting the mechanical properties (torquability, pushability) of the FORS enabled guidewire and catheters. The combined outcomes of high cannulation success, positive user experience, adequate accuracy, and absence of safety issues demonstrate the safety and feasibility of the FORS system in a preclinical environment. In this paper, triangular prismatic cells for background integration on mesh-free methods are introduced and the Gauss integration scheme is developed in these cells. The cells are used in the mesh-free Galerkin method for free vibration, static and dynamic analysis of general polygonal plates of various thicknesses. The moving least square shape functions are used to construct the approximation of field variables, and the Hamilton principle is used to drive the weak form equations of motion. For the dynamic case, the resulted set of differential equations are solved by the Wilson method. The main objective of this work is developing of a mesh-free method for analysis of triangle and polygonal geometries and more important is to use the triangular prismatic cells and corresponding generalized Gaussian quadrature rules for integration in mesh-free methods. The cells can be used in a compound with cubic cells for discretization of any complicate three-dimensional geometries. To show this capability, free vibration analysis of a general pentagon plate is also performed. This study concerns the three-dimensional hybrid nanofluid flow and heat transfer due to a deformable (stretching/shrinking) plate with power-law velocity and orthogonal surface shear. The flow due to the shrinking sheet is maintained with the imposition of wall mass suction. The effect of adding Cu and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles are represented by a homogeneous mixture model with the modified thermophysical properties. Two types of thermophysical properties for hybrid nanofluids are discussed and compared in this interesting work. The three-dimensional model is then, reduced into a relevant set of ordinary differential equations using similarity transformation. The results are generated using the bvp4c solver and presented in the tables and graphs. Duality of solutions are observed in both stretching and shrinking regions, however, only the first solution is proved to be stable and realistic. Surprisingly, the heat transfer rate augments when the power law velocity is used. The hybrid nanofluid with an upsurge of copper volume fraction also reduces the rate of heat transfer. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is considered as a most widely used biodegradable polymers in tissue engineering. But, PCL is also associated with certain limitations like, low stiffness, hydrophobic nature and limited cell affinity. These drawbacks are addressed in the present study by incorporating different wt% of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) in the PCL matrix. 3D scaffolds were developed using a novel BioExtruder. The physicochemical properties, thermal stability and wettability of the composite scaffolds were studied systematically. Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopic images were analysed for morphological evaluation of the scaffolds. The pore size of the developed scaffolds increased from 290 to 315 μm with increasing SiO2 content, as examined by scanning electron microscope. An improved compressive modulus of 68.82 MPa was observed for 15 wt% SiO2 incorporated composite scaffold. The in-vitro degradation study of the composite scaffolds demonstrated an increase in the degradation rate for PCL/HAp scaffolds, while no significant change was observed for SiO2 incorporated scaffolds. Further, the cytotoxicity and cell proliferation studies were carried out using L929 Mouse Fibroblasts and MG-63 Osteoblasts respectively. The developed scaffolds revealed no toxic effects towards the cellular response and an increase in cell proliferation of ≥90% was observed during 7 days of cell culture. Thus, the scaffolds were proved to be potential candidate for bone tissue engineering application, particularly the scaffold with 10 wt% SiO2 incorporation into PCL/HAp (75/15) composite has resulted into higher cell proliferative % and improved mechanical strength. A calibrated multiple high-speed camera arrangement recording the flame emission from three different directions has been demonstrated on an engine. From the multiple views, the flame position inside the engine cylinder can be spatially mapped, allowing quantitative studies of the dynamics of ignition, flame development and propagation. Through space carving, the three-dimensional flame contour can be estimated. From this contour, properties like flame length, flame height, ignition locations and flame directions can be extracted. The technique is demonstrated by measurements on diesel flames inside a marine two-stroke engine with a bore diameter of 500 mm. Background: Objective evidence is lacking as to the benefit of the addition of 3D vision to conventional laparoscopy in Gynecologic surgery. This study aims to compare 3-D visual system to traditional 2-D laparoscopic visualization for the laparoscopic closure of the vaginal cuff during total laparoscopic hysterectomy by surgeons-in-training [defined as senior OBGYN resident or Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) fellow].Methods: 51 patients undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy at two tertiary care academic hospitals were randomized to two-dimensional or three-dimensional vision system with cuff closure performed by surgeons-in-training. The primary outcome was the time taken for vaginal cuff closure. Secondary outcomes included peri-operative outcomes and assessment of surgeon's perception of ease of cuff closure.Results: 27 (52.9%) cases were allocated to cuff closure with the 2D system and 24 (47.1%) cases to closure with the 3D vision system. Patient baseline characteristics were similar between the vision systems. Mean vaginal cuff closure time was not significantly different between 2D and 3D vision (10.1 min for 2D versus 12 min for 3D, p = 0.31). An additional 24 s was added to cuff closure time with each 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI, after controlling for potential confounders (p = 0.003). There was no difference in the surgeon rating of ease of cuff closure between 2D and 3D. Peri-operative outcomes are similar among the two groups.Conclusion: We did not demonstrate any benefits of 3D vision system over conventional 2D for the task of laparoscopic vaginal cuff suturing performed by surgeons-in-training. In this paper, a developed n-type piezoresistive three dimensional (3D) stress sensor with full temperature compensation is presented. The proposed sensing rosette benefits from the stress insensitivity of the full-circular n-type piezoresistor, oriented over (111) silicon plane, to detect only temperature changes for compensation. Moreover, the unique behavior of shear piezoresistive coefficient ($\pi _{{{44}}}$) of n-Si is utilized to construct a piezorestive stress sensing rosette over (111) silicon plane that is capable of extracting 3D stress components. A prototype stress sensing chip was microfabricated to test the capability of the developed sensing rosette to accurately extract stress applied on structures at different thermal environments. The fabricated sensing chip was subjected to different mechanical loads using a loading rig with four-point bending fixture. The testing was carried out over a temperature range of 0–50 °C. The results showed that the proposed sensing chip has the capability of capturing the stress applied at different temperatures. Also, the developed sensing rosette showed less sensitivity to the uncertainty in piezoresistive coefficients’ values compared to the other developed 3D piezoresistive stress sensors. To treat breast cancer patients in telecobalt unit with image based conformal radiotherapy planning using the multi-isocentric technique. Breast cancer is the leading cancer among all the female cancers. With improved screening techniques, many patients are being diagnosed at an early stage and the need for radiotherapy in such patients has increased. The telecobalt machine is still a preferred machine in many of the low income countries as it is cost-effective and can offer uninterrupted treatment to large number of patients. Three hundred patients requiring radiotherapy had a computed tomography based planning. Patients were immobilized using a breast board with a thermoplastic mould. Three dimensional planning was done with the multi-isocentric technique. These patients were then simulated using a Nucletron Simulix digital simulator for field verification and were treated in a Theratron Phoenix telecobalt treatment unit. The doses to the heart, ipsilateral lung and the conformity index were within the recommended values. The homogeneity index was not comparable; however, a section by section qualitative analysis was done and a final plan approved. As per the RTOG toxicity grading system, acute skin reaction grade 3 was observed in 3.6% of treatments to intact breast including nodal regions and in 3.5% of post mastectomy radiation patients. Single isocenter technique was not feasible as the telecobalt unit did not have multileaf collimators and asymmetric jaws. With improved image based planning, a multi-isocentric technique was planned. By evaluating the dose distribution, beam modifications can be made and treatments can be given with acceptable toxicity. Local scouring in the downstream of hydraulic structures is one of the important issues in river and hydraulic engineering, which involves a lot of costs every year, so the prediction of the rate of scour is important in hydraulic design. Side weirs are the most important of hydraulic structures that are used in passing flow. This study investigate the scouring due to falling jet from side weir in downstream in side channel numerically. The simulation was done with finite volume method. The comparison of numerical and experimental results of flow fields shows agreement. Results show that from upstream to downstream of side weir located in side channel, scoring is increased and the dimensions of the scour hole in the downstream of the rectangular side weirs increase along it. In fact, at the downstream of the lower edge of side weirs in side channel, scouring has the greatest dimensions; in particular the depth.

In recent years, the micromechanics model plays an important role in investigating the mechanical properties for particle-reinforced composite (PRC) materials. In this article, through discretizing the representative volume element (RVE) with eight-node hexahedral isoparametric elements, as well as expressing the higher-order displacement functions as the function of surface-averaged displacements for the subcell, a new parametric micromechanical model is presented to investigate the elastic constant variations of the three-dimensional PRC. For validating the proposed method, the finite elementmethod (FEM) is employed for solving the PRC without consideration of interphase. The calculated results by employing the FEM show a good consistencywith the proposed micromechanical method. The performance of a Ni–ZnS/three-dimensional (3D) graphene aerogel (GA) composite photocatalyst for hydrogen production was investigated in this study. Ni–ZnS precursor was loaded on 3D graphene aerogel through a simple solvothermal method, and the composite Ni–ZnS/GA was successfully synthesized. The average hydrogen production rate of Ni–ZnS/GA-4 can reached 12.06 mmol·g−1·h−1 and after three cycles for 9 h, the hydrogen production efficiency remained at 97.81%. Ni2+ doping provided suitable band gap for ZnS, which could fully absorb sunlight, and made the photo-generated carriers have sufficient redox ability. The large specific surface of 3D graphene gel enhanced the dispersion of nano Ni-ZnS, boosted photo-generated carrier separation, and accelerated sacrificial agent adsorption. The Ni–ZnS/GA composite had more active adsorption sites and photocatalytic reaction centers, improving photocatalytic activity and efficiency. Creating superior nanohybrids with a narrow band gap to harness a larger portion of the solar spectrum is a contemporary necessity. In this study, we utilized a streamlined solvothermal approach to develop a three-dimensional, flower-like tin sulfide (3DF-SnS 2) which was integrated atop graphitic nitride layers (g-C 3 N 4). Using a suite of standardized characterization techniques, we delved deep into understanding the design intricacies, structural aspects, photophysical properties, chemical interplay, and surface dynamics of the produced nanohybrids. A noteworthy enhancement in the photocatalytic activity was observed in the p-n heterojunction (3DF-SnS 2 /g-C 3 N 4) when tested under visible light using the benchmark organic pollutant, Rhodamine B (RhB). When pitted against other nanohybrids from this study, the optimized 3DF-SnS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 structure displayed a remarkable aptitude for RhB degradation. This was largely due to its adept ability to segregate photo-generated charges efficiently and the harmonious synergy between the 3D and 2D structures, streamlining the charge transfer processes. This commendable photocatalytic efficacy can be attributed to several factors. First, band gap narrowing, the hybrid structure successfully reduces its band gap, allowing for a broader spectrum of solar energy absorption. Second, harmonized charge separation, the interplay between the 3D flower and the 2D sheet structures ensures an effective and efficient separation of photo-generated charges, optimizing their availability for catalytic reactions. 3D/2D Interface Dynamics: The interaction between the 3D floral configuration and the 2D sheet enhances charge mobility, further boosting efficiency. Three-dimensional (3D) preoperative planning tools can be used to help plan and compare component alignment scenarios for different total hip arthroplasty systems to ultimately improve postoperative outcomes and patient satisfaction. The objective of this study is to use 3D preoperative planning tools based on patient-specific bone models to compare two different stem designs, specifically a compaction broach stem and a proximal press fit stem. The planner uses patient-specific proximal femoral bone morphology to suggest a specific implant size and placement. The planner then allows for preoperative predictions of component head positioning, stem fit within the canal, and potential cortical bone reaming that must be done, as well as postoperative predictions of stability and mechanics. The stems were evaluated to determine the accuracy of stem placement, the theoretical volumetric bone removal/reaming required to achieve a desired fit, and the associated postoperative mechanics. This study demonstrated that there was a difference in component alignment and predicted postoperative mechanics between a compaction broach stem and a press fit stem, with the compaction broach stem allowing for more accurate alignment with less required bone removal, resulting in improved postoperative stability and mechanics. This study also demonstrated that much of the stem misalignment for both systems occurred in the anterior/posterior direction. Overall, 3D preoperative planning offers significant benefits and novel intraoperative insight, and the industry should continue to enhance their THA preoperative planning tools. This study investigated the formulation mechanism of microspheres via internal surfactant distribution. Eudragit L100 based microspheres loaded with bovine serum albumin were prepared by solid in oil in oil emulsion solvent evaporation method using acetone and liquid paraffin system containing sucrose stearate as a surfactant. The fabricated microspheres were evaluated for encapsulation efficiency, particle size, production yield, and in vitro release characteristics. The internal structures of microspheres were characterized using synchrotron radiation X-ray microcomputed tomography (SR-µCT). The enhanced contrast made the sucrose stearate distinguished from Eudragit to have its three dimensional (3D) distribution. Results indicated that the content and concentration determined the state of sucrose stearate and had significant influences on the release kinetics of protein. The dispersity of sucrose stearate was the primary factor that controlled the structure of the microspheres and further affected the encapsulation efficiency, effective drug loading, as well as in vitro release behavior. In conclusion, the 3D internal distribution of surfactant in microspheres and its effects on protein release behaviors have been revealed for the first time. The highly resolved 3D architecture provides new evidence for the deep understanding of the microsphere formation mechanism.

The response of true stress to strain rate, temperature and strain is a complex three-dimensional (3D) issue, and the accurate description of such constitutive relationships significantly contributes to the optimum process design. To obtain the true stress–strain data of ultra-high-strength steel, BR1500HS, a series of isothermal hot tensile tests were conducted in a wide temperature range of 973–1,123 K and a strain rate range of 0.01–10 s−1 on a Gleeble 3800 testing machine. Then the constitutive relationships were modeled by an optimally constructed and well-trained backpropagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN). The evaluation of BP-ANN model revealed that it has admirable performance in characterizing and predicting the flow behaviors of BR1500HS. A comparison on improved Arrhenius-type constitutive equation and BP-ANN model shows that the latter has higher accuracy. Consequently, the developed BP-ANN model was used to predict abundant stress–strain data beyond the limited experimental conditions. Then a 3D continuous interaction space for temperature, strain rate, strain and stress was constructed based on these predicted data. The developed 3D continuous interaction space for hot working parameters contributes to fully revealing the intrinsic relationships of BR1500HS steel.

Objectives: 3D-printing is a rapidly developing technology with applications in orthopaedics including pre-operative planning, intraoperative guides, design of patient specific instruments and prosthetics, and education. Existing literature demonstrates that in the surgical treatment of a wide range of orthopaedic pathology, using 3D printing shows favourable outcomes. Despite this evidence 3D printing is not routinely used in orthopaedic practice. We aim to evaluate the advantages of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery to demonstrate its widespread applications throughout the field., Methods: We performed a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis. AMED, EMBASE, EMCARE, HMIC, PsycINFO, PubMed, BNI, CINAHL and Medline databases were searched using Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) platform. The search was conducted to include papers published before 8th November 2020. Clinical trials, journal articles, Randomised Control Trials and Case Series were included across any area of orthopaedic surgery. The primary outcomes measured were operation time, blood loss, fluoroscopy time, bone fusion time and length of hospital stay., Results: A total of 65 studies met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed, and 15 were suitable for the meta-analysis, producing a data set of 609 patients. The use of 3D printing in any of its recognised applications across orthopaedic surgery showed an overall reduction in operative time (SMD = -1.30; 95%CI: -1.73, -0.87), reduction in intraoperative blood loss (SMD = -1.58; 95%CI: -2.16, -1.00) and reduction in intraoperative fluoroscopy time (SMD = -1.86; 95%CI: -2.60, -1.12). There was no significant difference in length of hospital stay or in bone fusion time post-operatively., Conclusion: The use of 3D printing in orthopaedics leads to an improvement in primary outcome measures showing reduced operative time, intraoperative blood loss and number of times fluoroscopy is used. Background: Upper limb motor paresis is a major symptom of stroke, which limits activities of daily living and compromises the quality of life. Kinematic analysis offers an in-depth and objective means to evaluate poststroke upper limb paresis, with anticipation for its effective application in clinical settings., Objective: This study aims to compare the movement strategies of patients with hemiparesis due to stroke and healthy individuals in forward reach and hand-to-mouth reach, using a simple methodology designed to quantify the contribution of various movement components to the reaching action., Methods: A 3D motion analysis was conducted, using a simplified marker set (placed at the mandible, the seventh cervical vertebra, acromion, lateral epicondyle of the humerus, metacarpophalangeal [MP] joint of the index finger, and greater trochanter of the femur). For the forward reach task, we measured the distance the index finger's MP joint traveled from its starting position to the forward target location on the anterior-posterior axis. For the hand-to-mouth reach task, the shortening of the vertical distance between the index finger MP joint and the position of the chin at the start of the measurement was measured. For both measurements, the contributions of relevant upper limb and trunk movements were calculated., Results: A total of 20 healthy individuals and 10 patients with stroke participated in this study. In the forward reach task, the contribution of shoulder or elbow flexion was significantly smaller in participants with stroke than in healthy participants (mean 52.5%, SD 24.5% vs mean 85.2%, SD 4.5%; P<.001), whereas the contribution of trunk flexion was significantly larger in stroke participants than in healthy participants (mean 34.0%, SD 28.5% vs mean 3.0%, SD 2.8%; P<.001). In the hand-to-mouth reach task, the contribution of shoulder or elbow flexion was significantly smaller in participants with stroke than in healthy participants (mean 71.8%, SD 23.7% vs mean 90.7%, SD 11.8%; P=.009), whereas shoulder girdle elevation and shoulder abduction were significantly larger in participants with stroke than in healthy participants (mean 10.5%, SD 5.7% vs mean 6.5%, SD 3.0%; P=.02 and mean 16.5%, SD 18.7% vs mean 3.0%, SD 10.4%; P=.02, respectively)., Conclusions: Compared with healthy participants, participants with stroke achieved a significantly greater distance via trunk flexion in the forward reach task and shoulder abduction and shoulder girdle elevation in the hand-to-mouth reach task, both of these differences are regarded as compensatory movements. Objects: To investigate the value of CT-based 3D templating software for pre-operative planning in patients with acetabular dysplasia undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of a single surgeon's cohort of patients with Crowe I to III developmental dysplastic hip (49 hips in 41 patients) who underwent cementless primary THA and were available for follow-up at a mean of 2.7 years after THA. We analyzed the accuracy of cup size prediction, the reliability of pre- and post-operative cup orientation and position of reconstructed rotation center using CT-based 3D templating software. Post-operative Harris Hip Score and lower limb discrepancy was obtained at the last follow-up. Results: The sizes of 71% of the cup components (35/49) were estimated exactly, and 100% of the cup size estimates were accurate to within one-cup size. There was good reproducibility of pre- and post-operative position of reconstructed rotation center (correlation coefficient r = 0.396 for vertical position, p = 0.005; r = 0.326 for horizontal position, p = 0.024). There was no substantial agreement between the planned acetabular orientation and that measured post-operatively (correlation coefficient –0.174 for inclination and 0.045 for anteversion). There were 44 (90%) excellent or good results according to HHS. Seven patients (14%) reported lower limb discrepancy. Conclusions: Pre-operative CT-based 3D templating made it possible to predict accurate cup size and achieve reproducible cup position in patients with dysplastic acetabulum. Objectives/Hypothesis: Augmented reality (AR) allows for the addition of transparent virtual images and video to one's view of a physical environment. Our objective was to develop a head‐worn, AR system for accurate, intraoperative localization of pathology and normal anatomic landmarks during open head and neck surgery. Study Design: Face validity and case study. Methods: A protocol was developed for the creation of three‐dimensional (3D) virtual models based on computed tomography scans. Using the HoloLens AR platform, a novel system of registration and tracking was developed. Accuracy was determined in relation to actual physical landmarks. A face validity study was then performed in which otolaryngologists were asked to evaluate the technology and perform a simulated surgical task using AR image guidance. A case study highlighting the potential usefulness of the technology is also presented. Results: An AR system was developed for intraoperative 3D visualization and localization. The average error in measurement of accuracy was 2.47 ± 0.46 millimeters (1.99, 3.30). The face validity study supports the potential of this system to improve safety and efficiency in open head and neck surgical procedures. Conclusions: An AR system for accurate localization of pathology and normal anatomic landmarks of the head and neck is feasible with current technology. A face validity study reveals the potential value of the system in intraoperative image guidance. Two-dimensional radiologic images of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations are insufficient to provide three-dimensional conception of intracranial or spinal lesions, especially for an inexperienced neurosurgeon. We share our experience of applications of volume rendering (VR) images of CT and MRI studies of brain and spine for the purpose of training and surgical planning in neurosurgery. Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine viewer software was used on a personal computer/laptop to view CT and MRI examinations of various lesions of brain, spine, and spinal cord. Various user-friendly applications of the software enable users to edit the images acquired. Imaging technique (CT and MRI) incorporating continuous or overlapping slice with slice thickness of 1 mm with zero gap provides adequate three-dimensional image quality on personal computer/laptop acquired by VR. It was especially helpful for assessment of lesions of the skull base, intracranial vessels (aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation), craniovertebral junction and contrast-enhancing lesions of the brain. Displaying VR images in the operating room as per the patient's head position orients the surgeon to identify various structures in the surgical field. VR is underused in neurosurgery. It enables inexperienced neurosurgeons to understand morphologic details of a lesion and important osteoneurovascular structures around it. In this study, a 3D idealized model of tidal flow, in which the tidal elevation and velocities are solved analytically, is developed. The horizontal eddy viscosity is neglected, and the vertical eddy viscosity used in the study is assumed to be independent of time and only varies as a parabolic function in the vertical direction. The analytical solution is obtained in a narrow rectangular bay, with the topography varying only across the bay. The model results are compared with the field observations in the Xiangshan Bay. The results show that the influence of varying vertical eddy viscosity mainly has two aspects. On one hand, it amplifies the magnitude of the tidal elevation, particularly the amplitude near the head of the bay. On the other hand, it adjusts the axial velocity profile, resulting in an obvious frictional effect. Furthermore, the tidal elevation and velocities are more sensitive to the magnitude of the eddy viscosity near the bottom than the structure in the upper water layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a crosstalk‐free dual‐view integral imaging display. It is composed of a display panel, a barrier array, and a micro‐lens array. The central barrier is located at the vertical central axes of the display panel and the micro‐lens array to split the element image array and the viewing zone. Moreover, other barriers are located at the margins of the elemental images and corresponding micro‐lenses to eliminate the crosstalk. The lights emitting from the left and right half of the element image array are modulated by the left and right half of the micro‐lens array to reconstruct the right and left viewing zones, respectively.
