Abstract

We introduce some new indexes to measure the departure of any multivariate continuous distribution on non-negative orthant from a given reference one such the uncorrelated exponential model, similar to the relative Fisher dispersion indexes of multivariate count models. The proposed multivariate variation indexes are scalar quantities, defined as ratios of two quadratic forms of the mean vector and the covariance matrix. They can be used to discriminate between continuous positive distributions. Generalized and multiple marginal variation indexes with and without correlation structure, respectively, and their relative extensions are discussed. The asymptotic behavior and other properties are studied. Illustrative examples and numerical applications are analyzed under several scenarios, leading to appropriate choices of multivariate models. Some concluding remarks and possible extensions are made.

Abstract

We present a framework to build a multiobjective algorithm from single-objective ones. This framework addresses the $p \times n$-dimensional problem of finding p solutions in an n-dimensional search space, maximizing an indicator by dynamic subspace optimization. Each single-objective algorithm optimizes the indicator function given $p - 1$ fixed solutions. Crucially, dominated solutions minimize their distance to the empirical Pareto front defined by these $p - 1$ solutions. We instantiate the framework with CMA-ES as single-objective optimizer. The new algorithm, COMO-CMA-ES, is empirically shown to converge linearly on bi-objective convex-quadratic problems and is compared to MO-CMA-ES, NSGA-II and SMS-EMOA.

Abstract

Abstract Background Malaria is one of the oldest and deadliest infectious diseases in humans. Many mathematical models of malaria have been developed during the past century, and applied to potential interventions. However, malaria remains uncontrolled and is increasing in many areas, as are vector and parasite resistance to insecticides and drugs. Methods This study presents a simulation model of African malaria vectors. This individual-based model incorporates current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying Anopheles population dynamics and their relations to the environment. One of its main strengths is that it is based on both biological and environmental variables. Results The model made it possible to structure existing knowledge, assembled in a comprehensive review of the literature, and also pointed out important aspects of basic Anopheles biology about which knowledge is lacking. One simulation showed several patterns similar to those seen in the field, and made it possible to examine different analyses and hypotheses for these patterns; sensitivity analyses on temperature, moisture, predation and preliminary investigations of nutrient competition were also conducted. Conclusions Although based on some mathematical formulae and parameters, this new tool has been developed in order to be as explicit as possible, transparent in use, close to reality and amenable to direct use by field workers. It allows a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying Anopheles population dynamics in general and also a better understanding of the dynamics in specific local geographic environments. It points out many important areas for new investigations that will be critical to effective, efficient, sustainable interventions.

170. My Transition from an Elementary to a High School Library: Building a Better School Library Model

Abstract

After 13 years as a middle school language arts teacher, the author earned a second Master's degree to become a licensed preK-12 school librarian. She made the transition to the position of K-8 school librarian, then eventually transitioned to the position of head librarian at the local high school. She found herself challenged to create, collaborate, develop, and implement innovative ways of managing a 21st-century space and was determined to make the school's library a model learning hub within the district. With open source materials available via the Internet, she promoted project-based learning experiences in which students applied information in products they helped to co-create. Student community service projects were designed to effect change locally and globally. Students gained soft skills that allowed them to empathize--not just sympathize--with community citizens and take action. This experience has helped the author to expand her role from one of merely showing students problems and possible solutions to demonstrating the importance of gaining and using knowledge to empower communities.

Abstract

In this paper we analyze theoretical properties of bi-objective convex-quadratic problems. We give a complete description of their Pareto set and prove the convexity of their Pareto front. We show that the Pareto set is a line segment when both Hessian matrices are proportional. We then propose a novel set of convex-quadratic test problems, describe their theoretical properties and the algorithm abilities required by those test problems. This includes in particular testing the sensitivity with respect to separability, ill-conditioned problems, rotational invariance, and whether the Pareto set is aligned with the coordinate axis., Comment: 12 pages

Abstract

We consider a multiplicative variation on the classical Kowalski-S\l{}odkowski Theorem which identifies the characters among the collection of all functionals on a Banach algebra $A$. In particular we show that, if $A$ is a $C^*$-algebra, and if $\phi:A\mapsto\mathbb C$ is a continuous function satisfying $\phi(\mathbf 1)=1$ and $\phi(x)\phi(y) \in \sigma(xy)$ for all $x,y\in A$ (where $\sigma$ denotes the spectrum), then $\phi$ generates a corresponding character $\psi_\phi$ on $A$ which coincides with $\phi$ on the principal component of the invertible group of $A$. We also show that, if $A$ is any Banach algebra whose elements have totally disconnected spectra, then, under the aforementioned conditions, $\phi$ is always a character.

185. A Spectral Characterization of Isomorphisms on $C^\star$-Algebras

Abstract

Following a result of Hatori, Miura and Tagaki ([4]) we give here a spectral characterization of an isomorphism from a $C^\star$-algebra onto a Banach algebra. We then use this result to show that a $C^\star$-algebra $A$ is isomorphic to a Banach algebra $B$ if and only if there exists a surjective function $\phi:A\rightarrow B$ satisfying (i) $\sigma\left(\phi(x)\phi(y)\phi(z)\right)=\sigma\left(xyz\right)$ for all $x,y,z\in A$ (where $\sigma$ denotes the spectrum), and (ii) $\phi$ is continuous at $\mathbf 1$. A simple example shows that (i) cannot be relaxed to products of two elements, as is the case with commutative Banach algebras. Our results also elaborate on a paper ([3]) of Bre\v{s}ar and \v{S}penko.

Abstract

Let $a$ and $b$ be elements of a semisimple, complex and unital Banach algebra $A$. Using subharmonic methods, we show that if the spectral containment $\sigma(ax)\subseteq\sigma(bx)$ holds for all $x\in A$, then $ax$ belongs to the bicommutant of $bx$ for all $x\in A$. Given the aforementioned spectral containment, the strong commutation property then allows one to derive, for a variety of scenarios, a precise connection between $a$ and $b$. The current paper gives another perspective on the implications of the above spectral containment which was also studied, not long ago, by J. Alaminos, M. Bre\v{s}ar et. al.

Abstract

Bioactive glasses (BGs) are amorphous materials exhibiting biocompatibility properties, gaining great interest as biomaterials for regenerative medicine. This work comprises two parts. First, the bioactivity properties that fluoridated phosphate-based bioactive glasses (F-PBGs) exhibit once implanted, for dental repair applications, was studied. Second, the experimental design of cardiac patches, containing 45S5 bioactive glasses for cardiac tissue engineering, was undertaken. Recently, the role played by fluoride ions on the bioactivity of F-PBGs has been debated in the literature and previous studies have concluded opposite results. Bioactivity and structure are closely related, so classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to accurately describe the atomistic structure of F-PBGs. To improve the modelling of Fcontaining bioactive phosphate, a conceptually advanced approach based on polarisation effects of both the oxygen and fluorine atoms was developed. The MD simulations were performed on the following systems P2O5(50-x) CaO(50-x)CaF2(x) ; x=0,2,5. In the composition with 2% and 5% of CaF2, no bonding between the phosphorus and fluorine atoms was observed and the atomistic visualisation highlighted the presence of Ca/F clusters. The main effect of fluoride addition was the bonding of the calcium with the fluorine. This bonding led to a re-polymerization of the network and the formation of F-rich and F-poor regions which, overall, decreased the bioactivity of the glass. Presence of clustering ultimately decreased the bioactivity of F-PBGs. Indeed, the ionic-rich regions dissolve at a higher rate than the network-rich regions leading to an uneven fluoro-apatite layer formation, which reduces F-PBGs's suitability for biomedical applications. It would have been ideal to back up the computational data with experiments, but the synthesis of FPBGs was not feasible in the laboratory available. The experimental section was therefore orientated toward to study of commercially available 45S5 silicate-based bioactive glasses (Si-BGs). Si-BGs are gaining more and more interest for soft tissue engineering applications. In particular, the use of Si-BGs/polymeric composite scaffold for cardiac tissue regeneration was shown to be promising but has not yet been addressed extensively. In this project, BGs-polymers composite cardiac patches for myocardial tissue regeneration exhibiting tunable degradation properties have been designed. Two techniques were combined: three-dimensional printing and electrospinning both using two highly biocompatible and bioresorbable biopolymers: poly(glycerol sebacate) and poly(caprolactone). The designed scaffold was shown to be a promising device for cardiac tissue engineering. The manufactured cardiac patches are bioresorbable and biocompatible with a controllable degradation depending on the composition. The addition of BGs had beneficial effects on cell proliferation by helping to regulate the pH and hence, providing a suitable environment for their growth and proliferation. BGs degradation in the PCL-PGS scaffolds, also led to the formation of an open three-dimensional porosity network within the scaffold. This is beneficial for cell growth, flow transport of nutrients and metabolic waste. Finally, mechanical properties showed high values of more than 200% of the myocardium's which will be beneficial for a healthy recovery of the heart scarred tissue. This project gathered modelling and experimental data that helped better understand the use of bioactive glasses for biomedical applications, including personalised treatments for patients.
