New wireless wearable monitoring systems integrated in professional garments require a high degree of reliability and autonomy. Active textile antenna systems may serve as platforms for body-centric sensing, localisation, and wireless communication systems, in the meanwhile being comfortable and invisible to the wearer. We present a new dedicated comprehensive design paradigm and combine this with adapted signal-processing techniques that greatly enhance the robustness and the autonomy of these systems. On the one hand, the large amount of real estate available in professional rescue worker garments may be exploited to deploy multiple textile antennas. On the other hand, the size of each radiator may be designed large enough to ensure high radiation efficiency when deployed on the body. This antenna area is then reused by placing active electronics directly underneath and energy harvesters directly on top of the antenna patch. We illustrate this design paradigm by means of recent textile antenna prototypes integrated in professional garments, providing sensing, positioning, and communication capabilities. Electronic textiles (e-textiles) and wearable computing have been emerging increasingly during the last decade. Since the market interest and predictions have grown, the research into increasing reliability and durability of wearables and e-textiles is developing rapidly. The washability of different integration methods and resistance to mechanical stress are the main obstacles being tackled. However, the freedom of movement and overall comfort is still often overlooked during the development phase. It is essential to see the e-textile product as a whole and consider several aspects of user experience. This work will focus on developing and improving the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) lamination integration method for e-textiles. In the work, a stretchable copper-polyimide based circuit was laminated onto knit fabric using various TPU films and stacks. The study shares measurable characteristics to determine which material assembly and design would ensure the highest durability for the electronics part without losing its original textile softness, flexibility and stretchability. Abstract: Tactile shear sensors gain importance for example in the field of robotics and biomedical sciences. For these applications, an “artificial skin”-like solution is needed with very thin and flexible unobtrusive sensors that can be wrapped around irregular surfaces or body parts. We present a tactile shear sensor based on the changing optical coupling between a light source (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL)) and a photodiode, separated by a transparent deformable transducer layer. When shear stress is applied onto the stack, both components move laterally and the photodiode captures a differing amount of light. Commercially available bare die VCSELs and photodiodes were thinned down to 20colonm and then packaged in flexible polyimide foils (40colonm thick) to allow fabricating this flexible and thin sensor. The use of spin-coatable polyimide resulted in low-stress packages for these optoelectronics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In in-vivo microsystems, one of the components is a biocompatible micropump in order to produce the necessary force to deliver the fluid from the inlet to the outlet. In this contribution, a flexible micropump is fabricated which is aimed to be suitable in drug delivery applications. It provides high degree of biocompatibility, since the only employed materials are implantation grade polydimethylsiloxane elastomer and gold for the electrical interconnects. The working principle of the micropump is based on transverse DC electroosmosis which is a new variant of conventionally applied high voltage DC electroosmosis. This new technique is based on topography irregularities introduced in the channel resulting in a non-uniform charge distribution. The advantage is to drive the micropump using a relatively low DC voltage of 10 V while getting an effective flow speed of 60 μm/s. In order to characterize the flow speed, dyed 3 μm beads are dispersed in the working fluid and their speed is measured by the line scanning technique using a confocal microscope. It is also observed that the flow has a helical profile which is an attractive feature for an efficient micro-mixer in active microfluidics and μ-TAS applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the fine-pitch interconnection capabilities of the ultra-thin chip packaging (UTCP) technology, a technology under development for embedding thin chips in a flexible polyimide (PI) substrate. It allows for fully flexible electronics, as the rigid chips are thinned down to 20-30 μm, at which point they become truly flexible themselves. This way, instead of just a flexible substrate with rigid components assembled on top, the entire circuitry can be incorporated inside a 30-40 μm thin chip package. The paper briefly introduces the technology's background with a short description of the fabrication process. Building on the developments already achieved, some further optimizations are discussed, and the technology is tested for its fine-pitch interconnection capabilities using test chips with four-point probe and daisy chain patterns, with a pitch down to 40 μm. The increasing number of biomedical applications for electronic systems have led to the need for stretchable electronics in order to significantly enhance the comfort of the user. This paper describes the design and manufacturing process of new stretchable high-frequency interconnects with meander-shaped conductors in a coplanar waveguide topology. The novel interconnects are produced based on laser-ablation of a copper foil, which is then embedded in a highly stretchable bio-compatible silicone material. Measurements on prototypes of the designed stretchable high-frequency interconnects revealed a maximal magnitude of -14 dB for the reflection coefficient and a minimal magnitude of -4 dB for the transmission coefficient in the frequency band up to 3 GHz. The influence of stretch on the performance of the high-frequency interconnects was analyzed using a stretch testing machine. The results showed that nor the magnitude, neither the phase of the transmission coefficient was influenced by elongations up to 20%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considering the high prevalence of cartilage-associated pathologies, low self-repair capacity and limitations of current repair techniques, tissue engineering (TE) strategies have emerged as a promising alternative in this field. Three-dimensional culture techniques have gained attention in recent years, showing their ability to provide the most biomimetic environment for the cells under culture conditions, enabling the cells to fabricate natural, 3D functional microtissues (MTs). In this sense, the aim of this study was to generate, characterize and compare scaffold-free human hyaline and elastic cartilage-derived MTs (HC-MTs and EC-MTs, respectively) under expansion (EM) and chondrogenic media (CM). MTs were generated by using agarose microchips and evaluated ex vivo for 28 days. The MTs generated were subjected to morphometric assessment and cell viability, metabolic activity and histological analyses. Results suggest that the use of CM improves the biomimicry of the MTs obtained in terms of morphology, viability and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis with respect to the use of EM. Moreover, the overall results indicate a faster and more sensitive response of the EC-derived cells to the use of CM as compared to HC chondrocytes. Finally, future preclinical in vivo studies are still needed to determine the potential clinical usefulness of these novel advanced therapy products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
