Abstract

The low toxicity, narrow bandgaps, and high charge-carrier mobilities make tin perovskites the most promising light absorbers for low-cost perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the development of the Sn-based PSCs is seriously hampered by the critical issues of poor stability and low power conversion efficiency (PCE) due to the facile oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+ and poor film formability of the perovskite films. Herein, a synthetic strategy is developed for the fabrication of methylammonium tin iodide (MASnI3) film via ion exchange/insertion reactions between solid-state SnF2 and gaseous methylammonium iodide. In this way, the nucleation and crystallization of MASnI3 can be well controlled, and a highly uniform pinhole-free MASnI3 perovskite film is obtained. More importantly, the detrimental oxidation can be effectively suppressed in the resulting MASnI3 film due to the presence of a large amount of remaining SnF2. This high-quality perovskite film enables the realization of a PCE of 7.78%, which is among the highest values reported for the MASnI3-based solar cells. Moreover, the MASnI3 solar cells exhibit high reproducibility and good stability. Abstract

Inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites offer a pathway towards thermally stable photovoltaics. However, moisture‐induced phase degradation restricts the application of hole transport layers (HTLs) with hygroscopic dopants. Dopant‐free HTLs fail to realize efficient photovoltaics due to severe electrical loss. Herein, we developed an electrical loss management strategy by manipulating poly(3‐hexylthiophene) with a small molecule, i.e., SMe‐TATPyr. The developed P3HT/SMe‐TATPyr HTL shows a three‐time increase of carrier mobility owing to breaking the long‐range ordering of "edge‐on" P3HT and inducing the formation of "face‐on" clusters, over 50 % decrease of the perovskite surface defect density, and a reduced voltage loss at the perovskite/HTL interface because of favorable energy level alignment. The CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cell demonstrates a record‐high efficiency of 16.93 % for dopant‐free HTL, and superior moisture and thermal stability by maintaining 96 % efficiency at low‐humidity condition (10–25 % R. H.) for 1500 hours and over 95 % efficiency after annealing at 85 °C for 1000 hours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Regulating the electron transport layer (ETL) has been an effective way to promote the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as well as suppress their hysteresis. Herein, the SnO2 ETL using a cost‐effective modification material rubidium fluoride (RbF) is modified in two methods: 1) adding RbF into SnO2 colloidal dispersion, F and Sn have a strong interaction, confirmed via X‐ray photoelectron spectra and density functional theory results, contributing to the improved electron mobility of SnO2; 2) depositing RbF at the SnO2/perovskite interface, Rb+ cations actively escape into the interstitial sites of the perovskite lattice to inhibit ions migration and reduce non‐radiative recombination, which dedicates to the improved open‐circuit voltage (Voc) for the PSCs with suppressed hysteresis. In addition, double‐sided passivated PSCs, RbF on the SnO2 surface, and p‐methoxyphenethylammonium iodide on the perovskite surface, produces an outstanding PCE of 23.38% with a Voc of 1.213 V, corresponding to an extremely small Voc deficit of 0.347 V. Abstract

Suppressing non‐radiative recombination via passivating surface defects of perovskite films has demonstrated an excellent strategy for high‐performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it is still hard to realize both high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of >1.2 V and high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of >22%, because the optimized bandgap of perovskite films is less than 1.60 eV for efficient light harvesting and Voc deficit is generally unavoidable due to carriers recombination. Here, the surface of the perovskite film is treated with a series of phenylhydroxylammonium halide salts and it is found that all of them can remarkably prolong the carrier lifetime owing to their excellent capability of surface defects passivation. The best PSC with phenylbutylammonium bromide treatment realizes a PCE of 22.67% with a Voc of 1.216 V, corresponding to a small Voc deficit of ≈344 mV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the probiotic potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from De'ang pickled tea, a traditional food consumed by the De'ang nationality of Yunnan, China. Twenty-six LAB strains isolated from De'ang pickled tea were subjected to identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Twenty-four belonged to Lactobacillus plantarum, one belonged to Enterococcus casseliflavus, and one belonged to Lactobacillus acidophilus. Eighteen out of 26 LAB strains which showed a higher capability to tolerate simulated gastrointestinal juices were chosen to further evaluate their probiotic properties. Varied adhesive abilities and auto-aggregative capacities of selected LAB strains were dependent on species and even strains. All tested LAB strains were resistant to kanamycin, streptomycin, gentamycin, and vancomycin and sensitive to tetracycline and chloramphenicol. Ten out of the 18 strains are resistant to ampicillin, and the remaining strains are sensitive to ampicillin; 4 out of the 18 strains showed resistance to erythromycin. Compared to reference strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG, these LAB strains had a greater or comparative antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium or Escherichia coli. In contrast, eight out of the 18 strains suppressed growth of Shigella flexneri. Two L. plantarum strains, ST and STDA10, not only exhibited good probiotic properties but also showed a good ability of scavenging DPPH and ABTS+. This study suggests that L. plantarum ST and STDA10 could be used as potential probiotics applied in functional foods.

Abstract

The translation of unparalleled efficiency from the lab-scale devices to practical-scale flexible modules affords a huge performance loss for flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The degradation is attributed to the brittleness and discrepancy of perovskite crystal growth upon different substrates. Inspired by robust crystallization and flexible structure of vertebrae, herein, we employ a conductive and glued polymer between indium tin oxide and perovskite layers, which simultaneously facilitates oriented crystallization of perovskite and sticks the devices. With the results of experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations, this bionic interface layer accurately controls the crystallization and acts as an adhesive. The flexible PSCs achieve the power conversion efficiencies of 19.87% and 17.55% at effective areas of 1.01 cm2 and 31.20 cm2 respectively, retaining over 85% of original efficiency after 7000 narrow bending cycles with negligible angular dependence. Finally, the modules are assembled into a wearable solar-power source, enabling the upscaling of flexible electronics. Flexible perovskite solar cells suffer huge efficiency loss upon area scale-up due to brittleness of ITO and poor perovskite film quality. Abstract

Cisplatin has been clinically used for treatment of solid tumors such as non–small‐cell lung cancer for decades. However, tumor resistance may be acquired with losing the antitumor activity of cisplatin. As cellular membrane is the first barrier that cisplatin has to overcome before its further action inside the cells, the membrane composition must play a vital role in the cisplatin uptake and excretion, which further influences cisplatin sensitivity. In this work, we applied time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) surface analysis combined with principle component analysis to distinguish the differences of cell membrane composition between non–small‐cell lung cancer cells (A549) and its cisplatin resistant counterpart A549/DDP cells. The decreased phosphatidylcholine content and more abundant cholesterol were observed in the drug resistant cell surfaces, indicating the decreased membrane fluidity of A549/DDP cells. Moreover, we further compared membrane composition of A549 and A549/DDP cells after being treated with different concentrations of cisplatin. A higher composition level of proteins was discovered on all groups of A549/DDP cell membranes. The altered surface chemistry of cellular membranes induced by cisplatin indicates the significance of membrane structures in the drug resistance, which deserves further investigations to this regard. Abstract

Atmospheric aerosols collected from each season in urban Beijing have been studied using time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). The chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol particles during various atmospheric pollution levels was analyzed and distinguished by principal component analysis (PCA). The differences and sources of the components of the aerosol particles were explored. The results showed that the fine particulate matter from heavily polluted days mainly consists of inorganic salts and organic compounds, such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen‐ or sulfur‐containing hydrocarbons, and their oxides. Samples collected from clean days in the four seasons were also analyzed. Only the samples collected in spring showed a significant difference from the other three seasons. We concluded that the main source of pollution in the Beijing urban area was fossil fuel combustion from motor vehicles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
