Abstract

Reactive oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, carbonyl, chlorine, bromine, and iodine species (RXS, where X = O, N, S, C, Cl, Br, and I) have important roles in various normal physiological processes and act as essential regulators of cell metabolism; their inherent biological activities govern cell signaling, immune balance, and tissue homeostasis. However, an imbalance between RXS production and consumption will induce the occurrence and development of various diseases. Due to the considerable progress of nanomedicine, a variety of nanosystems that can regulate RXS has been rationally designed and engineered for restoring RXS balance to halt the pathological processes of different diseases. The invention of radical-regulating nanomaterials creates the possibility of intriguing projects for disease treatment and promotes advances in nanomedicine. In this comprehensive review, we summarize, discuss, and highlight very-recent advances in RXS-based nanomedicine for versatile disease treatments. This review particularly focuses on the types and pathological effects of these reactive species and explores the biological effects of RXS-based nanomaterials, accompanied by a discussion and the outlook of the challenges faced and future clinical translations of RXS nanomedicines. Abstract

This paper proposes a novel two-stage inertial amplification tuned mass damper with grounded stiffness element (TIAS-TMD). The fixed-points theory of the classical TMD is extended to the TIAS-TMD for optimization, and parametric studies are conducted. The performance of several existing TMDs and the TIAS-TMD are calculated and compared. Finally, a prototype of TIAS-TMD is designed and manufactured, and its vibration attenuation performance is tested. Results show that the TIAS-TMD is superior either in reducing the maximum amplitude of the primary structure and the absorber, or in reducing and broadening the better attenuation frequency range. 189. A Power System Reliability Framework Considering Soil Drying-Out Effect on Underground Cables

Abstract

New cable installations are used to expand the power network's transmission capacity. Considering only fundamental cable design aspects and very conservative ratings can often lead to incorrect network reliability assessments while limiting asset's capacity and network transmission flexibility. Additional cable design aspects should be considered to improve network modeling with underground cables and utilize their thermal inertia contribution toward network flexibility and reliability. This work advances existing long-term network planning tools by aggregating cables’ rating model, soil drying-out properties, and a novel cable high-loading risk model into a Sequential Monte-Carlo method. These modeling additions allow the design of indices that quantify cables’ thermal inertia and thermal aging risks. Consequently, the proposed methodology can help utilities quantify benefits and costs from improved design measures to mitigate soil drying-out and identify appropriate backfill materials depending on a cost-benefit analysis. A modified IEEE 14-bus network is used to quantify the risks of soil drying-out effects on operational network security and the benefits of utilizing emergency rating as a flexibility measure. Results show emergency ratings could reduce EENS by ≈90%. However, increased cable aging risk is expected under unfavorable drying-out soil conditions. This is significantly reduced with the use of backfill materials.
