Extensive evidence has demonstrated that bilinguals non-selectively activate lexicons of both languages when reading or hearing words in one language. Here, we further investigated the electrophysiological roles of cross-linguistic orthography and phonology in the processing of L2 spoken words in unbalanced Chinese (L1)–English (L2) bilinguals in a cross-modal situation. Relative to unrelated control, the recognition of auditory L2 words showed behavioral interference effects when paired with orthographic or phonological neighbors of the correct translations of L2 words. Moreover, the lexical effects were also exhibited in the electrophysiological data, as reflected by marginally less positive late positive component (500–800 ms) amplitudes in the frontal region. Importantly, the orthographic rather than phonological translation neighbor condition elicited less negative N400 (300–500 ms) amplitudes in the parietal–occipital regions, suggesting that this orthographic translation neighbor condition facilitated the co-activation of spoken L2 words. Taken together, these findings indicate that cross-linguistic orthographic and phonological activation have different temporal dynamics with both bottom-up parallel cross-linguistic activation and the top-down inhibitory control mechanism governing the two-language lexical organization in L2 spoken word recognition.

Bullying has become a social concern in schools in China, and school adjustment is an important factor affecting bullying. We explored the mediating role of social support in the relationship between school adjustment and bullying among 600 left-behind children in junior middle schools in Shandong Province, China. The students completed the School Adjustment Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the Junior High School Bullying Questionnaire. Results showed significant differences in school adjustment, social support, and bullying between the children of families where only one parent had migrated to the city for work, and children of families where both parents had done so. School adjustment, social support, and bullying were significantly correlated among the left-behind children. Social support played a mediating role in the relationship between the school adjustment and bullying of these children. The results provide references for school teachers and family members to reduce bullying of left-behind children.

In this study Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBL) decoction and commercial capsules were digested using an in vitro model. Thirty-six active compounds were identified and quantified by HPLC-ESI-MS analysis based on the MS/MS patterns (precursor ions and product ions) and retention times, in comparison with reference standards. Most compounds in GBL showed a significant decrease during intestinal digestion, with an exception of vanillic acid and biflavonoids. Bioaccessibility values of chemical compositions varied between decoction and capsules samples. Also, significant reductions of total flavonoids and total phenolic content was observed after in vitro digestion. Both, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazo-line-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) scavenging capacity decreased after gastric digestion, but increased during intestinal digestion. Nevertheless, different behaviour was observed in reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Compared to the pH of digestion, the influence of digestive enzymes on the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of GBL was relatively minor. Overall, these results may help provide a valid foundation for further investigations on bioactive compounds and the pharmacodynamics of GBL.

Yak has evolved specific adaptative mechanisms to high-altitude environment. Up to date, only a few studies reported the DNA methylation in yak. In the present study, genome-wide DNA methylome and transcriptome profiles in lung, mammary, and biceps brachii muscle tissues were compared between yak and three cattle breeds (Tibetan cattle, Sanjiang cattle, and Holstein cattle). The association between differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) was analyzed, and the biological functions of DEGs potentially driven by DMRs were explored by KEGG enrichment analysis. Finally, we found that yak-specific DMRs-driven DEGs were mainly involved in neuromodulation, respiration, lung development, blood pressure regulation, cardiovascular protection, energy metabolism, DNA repair, and immune functions. The higher levels of the key genes associated with these functions were observed in yak than in cattle, suggesting that DNA methylation might regulate these genes. Overall, the present study contributes basic data at the DNA methylation level to further understand the physiological metabolism in yak.

Objective. To study the mechanism of acupuncture on premature ovarian failure (POF) through the apoptosis pathway mediated by Bcl-2/Bax. Methods. POF rats were successfully obtained by cyclophosphamide. They were divided into five groups. After that, acupuncture was performed. The blank group and model group were not treated. The routine acupuncture group was acupuncture at Guanyuan, Sanyinjiao, Zhongji, and Guilai four points. The Neck-seven-acupuncture group was selected from Fengchi, Fengfu, Tianzhu, and Wangu four acupoints; the three-viscera simultaneous treatment group selected Guanyuan, Shenshu, Sanyinjiao, Taichong, and Baihui five points; and the data mining group selected Guanyuan and Sanyinjiao two points for 14 days of treatment. During the treatment, some rats were shed one after another due to the side effects of bone marrow suppression caused by mold-making. After treatment, serum estradiol (E2), follicle forming hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were detected by radioimmunoassay, Bcl-2 and Bax proteins were analyzed by Western blot method, and Bcl-2 and Bax RNA were analyzed by PCR method. Results. Bcl-2 increased and Bax decreased in rats with premature ovarian failure treated with acupuncture. It shows that acupuncture can affect the secretion of ovarian-related hormones and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, which is more significant in the conventional acupuncture point group. Conclusion. Acupuncture can inhibit the apoptosis of granulosa cells in ovarian tissue of rats with premature ovarian failure and improve ovarian function. The mechanism of its effect is to promote Bcl-2 gene expression and protein synthesis and inhibit Bax gene expression and protein synthesis. The conventional treatment group works best. This provides an experimental basis for the clinical use of acupuncture to intervene in the treatment of premature ovarian failure.

Studies of both, microbiota and target therapy associated with gene mutations in colorectal cancer, (CRC) have attracted increasing attention. However, only a few of them analyzed the combined effects on CRC. we analyzed differences in intestinal microbiota of 44 colorectal cancer patients and 20 healthy controls (HC) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples. For 39 of the CRC patients, targeted Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) was carried out at formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) samples to identify somatic mutation profiles. Compared to the HC group, the microbial diversity of CRC patients was significantly lower. In the CRC group, we found a microbiome that was significantly enriched for strains of Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, and Megasphaera whereas in the HC group the abundance of Collinsella, Faecalibacterium, and Agathobacter strains was higher. Among the mutations detected in the CRC group, the APC gene had the highest mutation rate (77%, 30/39). We found that the KRAS mutant type was closely associated with Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, Megamonas, Lachnoclostridium, and Harryflintia. Notably, Spearman correlation analysis showed that KRAS mutations were negatively correlated with the existence of Bifidobacterium and positively correlated with Faecalibacterium. By employing 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we identified more unique features of microbiota profiles in CRC patients. For the first time, our study showed that gene mutations could directly be linked to the microbiota composition of CRC patients. We hypothesize that the effect of a targeted colorectal cancer therapy is also closely related to the colorectal flora, however, this requires further investigation.

Photocatalytic fixation of nitrogen to ammonia (NH3) is green but low-efficiency technology due to the high recombination of photo-generated carriers and poor light absorption of photocatalysts. Generally, the adsorption capacity for N2 and the band position of TiO2 are responsible for bandgap, light-adsorption, and the separation of photocarriers. Therefore, they play crucial roles to improve catalytic activity. Herein, N-doping TiO2 hollow microspheres (NTO-0.5) with oxygen vacancies were synthesized via a hydrothermal method using phenolic resin microsphere as a template. The obtained NTO-0.5 achieves an impressive ammonia yield of 80.09 μmol gcat-1 h-1. Oxygen vacancies of NTO-0.5 were confirmed by ESR, Raman, XPS, Zeta potential, and H2O2 treatment for reducing oxygen vacancies. The ammonia yield of NTO-0.5 decreases to 34.78 μmol gcat-1 h-1 after reducing oxygen vacancies by H2O2 treatment, which demonstrates the importance of oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancies narrow the bandgap from 3.18 eV to 2.83 eV and impede the recombination of photo-generated carriers. The hollow microspheres structure is conducive to light absorption and utilization. Therefore, the synergistic effect between the oxygen vacancies and the hollow microspheres structure boosts the efficiency of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. After four cycles, the ammonia production yield still maintains at 76.52 μmol gcat-1 h-1, meaning high stability. This work provides a new insight into the construction of catalysts with oxygen vacancies to enhance photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance.

When applying an additional coating method to fabricate micro-nano hierarchical structure required for superhydrophobic function on glass surface, the hierarchical structure does generally not have good abrasion resistance, due to the weak adhesion between coating and glass surface. However, glass itself is a material with good abrasion resistance. A micro-nano hierarchical structure with honeycomb-shaped micro-armor protection on glass surface by a two-step hydrothermal corrosion method has been constructed: the first step of hydrothermal corrosion in water to construct micro-armor structure, and the second step of hydrothermal corrosion in sodium citrate aqueous solution to fabricate micro-nano hierarchical structure. The advantages of this new method are: the treatment process is simple, and there is no need to apply additional coatings. The micro-nano hierarchical structure constructed on glass surface by this method has a great abrasion resistance. After 1,000 cycles of abrasion under harsh conditions, the nano-structure on glass surface can still be remained intact. It provides a new method for fabricating abrasion-resistant micro-nano hierarchical structure on glass surface, as well as a new approach to the preparation of abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic glass.

Bortezomib (bort) is an effective therapeutic agent for multiple myeloma (MM) patients, however, the majority of patients develop drug resistance. Autophagy, a highly conserved process that recycles cytosol or entire organelles via lysosomal activity, is essential for the survival, homeostasis and drug resistance in MM. Growing evidence has highlighted the E3 ligase tripartite motif-containing protein 21 (TRIM21) not only interacts with multiple autophagy regulators but also participates in drug resistance in various cancers. However, to date, the direct substrates and additional roles of TRIM21 in MM remain unknown. In this study, we demonstrated that low TRIM21 expression was a factor for relapse in MM. TRIM21 knockdown (KD) made MM cells more resistant to bort, while TRIM21 overexpression (OE) resulted in increased MM sensitivity to bort. Proteomic and phospho-proteomic studies of TRIM21 KD MM cells showed bort resistance was associated with increased oxidative stress and elevated pro-survival autophagy. Our results provided that TRIM21 KD MM cell lines induced pro-survival autophagy after bort treatment, and suppressing autophagy by 3-methyladenine treatment or by the short hairpin RNA of ATG5 restored bort sensitivity. Indeed, autophagy-related gene 5 (ATG5) expression was increased and decreased by TRIM21 KD and OE, respectively. TRIM21 affected autophagy by ubiquitinating ATG5 through K48 for proteasomal degradation. Importantly, we confirmed that TRIM21 could potentiate the anti-myeloma effect of bort through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Overall, our findings define the key role for TRIM21 in MM bort resistance and provide the basis for a novel targeted therapeutic approach.

Purpose: To investigate the role and the underlying mechanism of scaffold attachment factor B (SAFB) in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC).Experimental Design: SAFB expression was analyzed in the Cancer Outlier Profile Analysis of Oncomine and in 175 paraffin-embedded archived CRC tissues. Gene Ontology analyses were performed to explore the mechanism of SAFB in CRC progression. Western blot, RT-PCR, luciferase assay, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) were used to detect the regulation of transforming growth factor-β–activated kinase 1 (TAK1) and NF-κB signaling by SAFB. The role of SAFB in invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis was investigated using in vitro and in vivo assays. The relationship between SAFB and TAK1 was analyzed in CRC tissues.Results: SAFB was downregulated in CRC tissues, and low expression of SAFB was significantly associated with an aggressive phenotype and poorer survival of CRC patients. The downregulation of SAFB activated NF-κB signaling by targeting the TAK1 promoter. Ectopic expression of SAFB inhibited the development of aggressive features and metastasis of CRC cells both in vitro and in vivo. The overexpression of TAK1 could rescue the aggressive features in SAFB-overexpressed cells. Furthermore, the expression of SAFB in CRC tissues was negatively correlated with the expression of TAK1- and NF-κB–related genes.Conclusions: Our results show that SAFB regulated the activity of NF-κB signaling in CRC by targeting TAK1. This novel mechanism provides a comprehensive understanding of both SAFB and the NF-κB signaling pathway in the progression of CRC and indicates that the SAFB–TAK1–NF-κB axis is a potential target for early therapeutic intervention in CRC progression. We present a sample of 330 blue edge-on low surface brightness galaxies (ELSBGs). To understand the chemical evolution of LSBGs, we derived the gas-phase abundance and the [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio. Compared with star-forming galaxies, ELSBGs show a flatter trend in the mass-metallicity ($M_*-Z$) relation, suggesting that the oxygen abundance enhancement is inefficient. We focus on 77 ELSBGs with HI data and found the closed-box model can not explain their gas fraction and metallicity relation, implying that infall and/or outflow is needed. We derived the [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio of normal ELSBG ($=$ 10$^{9.5}$M$\odot$) using single stellar population grids from MILES stellar library. The mean [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios are 0.18 and 0.4 for normal ELSBG and massive ELSBG, respectively. We discussed that the long time-scale of star-formation, and/or metal-rich gas outflow event caused by SNe Ia winds are likely responsible for the $\alpha$-enhancement of massive ELSBGs., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ
