One of the prominent challenges for widespread adoption of silicon photonics (SiPh) technology is the availability of an integration platform that can simultaneously meet a wide range of power, performance, and cost criteria in different applications. As a result, there is a diversity of SiPh integrated solutions proposed or demonstrated, but none is considered as a common solution. In this paper, we will first survey industry proposed photonic engine structures in monolithic and heterogeneous integration on their strengths and weaknesses. We will then propose a compact and universal PE structure - COUPE (COmpact Universal Photonic Engine) that could consolidate different requirements onto the same integration platform. COUPE has the electrical IC – photonic IC integration with the electrical interface designed to minimize the EIC-PIC coupling loss. Compared with industry proposed PE technology, COUPE can provide low insertion loss for both grating coupler (GC) and edge coupler (EC). For either GC or EC, the COUPE is a solid structure without cavities or mechanically weak parts, thus enabling low insertion loss without contamination or mechanical concerns. COUPE also has the flexibility to be integrated easily with host ASIC to form a co-package structure. The COUPE integration scheme can meet the most demanding system requirements and pave the way for SiPh-based wafer level system integration (WLSI) for high performance computing applications.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Duhuo Jisheng Decoction (DHJSD) is the most frequently prescribed herbal formula for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, efficacy and safety of DHJSD add-on bisphosphonate medications remain unclear. Aim of the study The purpose of this study was to reveal efficacy and safety of DHJSD add-on bisphosphonate medications in patients with osteoporosis through a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods Five important databases were searched for RCTs on this topic, and two authors individually extracted information and data concerning study design, baseline characteristics, efficacy rate, bone mineral density (BMD), pain score, and adverse event. Meta-analysis was done mainly with risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) for BMD and pain, using random-effects model; while Peto odds ratios (PORs) were used for pooling adverse event rates due to sparse data. Point estimate was reported with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Seventeen RCTs (n = 1526) met eligibility criteria, and were included in this synthesis. Pooled estimates demonstrated that as compared with no DHJSD, DHJSD-B led to significantly higher efficacy rates (RR = 1.25, 95%CI: 1.19–1.31; I2 = 0%), more lumbar BMD (SMD = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.25–0.96; I2 = 20%), lower pain score (SMD = −1.10, 95%CI: 1.40–0.79; I2 = 33%), and lower overall adverse event rates (POR = 0.40; 95%CI: 0.20–0.97; I2 = 27%). Conclusion Adding DHJSD on bisphosphonate medications seems to be an effective and safe strategy in treating patients with osteoporosis.

Osmunda regalis and O. japonica are geographically isolated independent species. Contrary to this morphologically based taxonomy, previous plastid DNA data have shown that O. regalis is paraphyletic, with the American O. regalis sister to O. japonica and O. lancea. It remains to be confirmed whether this paraphyletic topology results from hybridization, budding speciation, or classification issues. To clarify the evolutionary history of O. regalis and O. japonica, we performed multiple molecular phylogenetic analyses using 38 worldwide samples and sequences from 15 nuclear and six plastid DNA regions. The phylogenetic trees of the nuclear and plastid single-region analyses were incongruent. Phylogenetic networks were also discordant between the nuclear and plastid regions. Statistical analysis for detecting the introgressed sequences found hybridization signals between the American O. regalis and O. japonica lineage, particularly in plastid regions. Along with the paleobotanical data, the results suggest that the ancient introgression occurred at an estimated time of 12.8–4.1 Ma in East Asia, when and where both species coexisted. Post-hybridization geographical fluctuation led to the present amphi-Pacific distribution pattern. The phylogenetic network suggests that the New World O. regalis spread across continents in a relatively short time, while the Old World O. regalis experienced long-term geographical isolation between (sub)continents.

Background: In the context of increasing doctor–patient tensions in China, the objective of this study was to explore and examine the effects of loving-kindness meditation (LKM) on doctors’ mindfulness, empathy, and communication skills. Methods: A total of 106 doctors were recruited from a hospital in China, and randomly divided into an LKM training group (n = 53) and waiting control group (n = 53). The LKM training group received 8 weeks of LKM training intervention, whereas the control group received no intervention. Three major variables (mindfulness, empathy, and communication skills) were measured before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the LKM training intervention. Results: The empathy and communication skills of the LKM group were significantly improved compared with those of the control group, but the level of mindfulness did not significantly change. Conclusions: The results suggested that LKM may contribute to improving physicians’ empathy and communication skills. However, the mechanisms that underlie the effects of the LKM on mindfulness, empathy, and communication skills and other psychological constructs needs further elucidation.

Social distance regulations have been widely adopted during the global COVID-19 pandemic. From an evolutionary perspective, social connection and money are interchangeable subsistence resources for human survival. The substitutability principle of human motivation posits that scarcity in one domain (e.g., social connection) could motivate people to acquire or maintain resources in another domain (e.g., money). Two experiments were conducted to test the possibility that COVID-19 social distancing enhances the desire for money. Results showed that compared with controls, participants receiving social distancing primes (via recollection of experiences of social distancing or a Chinese glossary-search task) offered less money in the dictator game, showed lower willingness towards charitable donation (Experiment 1; N = 102), donated less money to a student fund, and rated money as having more importance (Experiment 2; N = 140). Our findings have far-reaching implications for financial decisions, charitable donations, and prosociality during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bentonites are rocks mostly consisting of swelling clay minerals. They were first described from the Cretaceous Benton Shale near Rock River, Wyoming, USA. Because of their useful properties (e.g. highly adsorbent, cation exchanging, swelling), bentonites have many uses, in industry (among them as drilling mud, purification agent, binder, adsorbent, paper production), culture (for e.g. pottery) and medicine/cosmetics/cat litter, civil engineering, and in the future even in the disposal of high-level nuclear waste. Particular chemical characteristics of bentonite clay minerals are rather variable but critically determine their suitability for a particular application. The 15 specialist authors discuss bentonite terminology, classification and genesis and use in eight chapters. Individual chapters deal with the methods bentonites are analysed with, their properties and performance in terms of parameters such as cation exchange capactiy, rheology, coagulation concentraion, water uptake capacity, free swelling, and electrical resistivity (amongst others). A chapter is dedicated to the sources of bentonites, the technology employed to produce them, and how quality control is carried out both in the mine and the laboratory. A further chapter is dedicated to methods of processing the mined material, different activation methods, drying, grinding, and purification. Use cases for bentonites are discussed in a chapter of its own. References, a section on norms and standards, and a list of abbreviations complete the text. The volume addresses students, researchers, and professionals in the mineral industry dealing with bentonite and their clay-mineral constituents, quality assessement and control, and persons that use bentonites in their products.

Graphical abstract, Highlights • A herb-based formula delivers positive clinical outcomes on COVID-19 patients. • The formula inhibits SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis in anti-viral & -inflammatory assays. • Real-world-evidence offers insights to inform drug development. • Bed-to-bench approach shortens the time required for finding effective therapeutics., COVID-19 is a global pandemic, with over 50 million confirmed cases and 1.2 million deaths as of November 11, 2020. No therapies or vaccines so far are recommended to treat or prevent the new coronavirus. A novel traditional Chinese medicine formula, Taiwan Chingguan Yihau (NRICM101), has been administered to patients with COVID-19 in Taiwan since April 2020. Its clinical outcomes and pharmacology have been evaluated. Among 33 patients with confirmed COVID-19 admitted in two medical centers, those (n = 12) who were older, sicker, with more co-existing conditions and showing no improvement after 21 days of hospitalization were given NRICM101. They achieved 3 consecutive negative results within a median of 9 days and reported no adverse events. Pharmacological assays demonstrated the effects of the formula in inhibiting the spike protein/ACE2 interaction, 3CL protease activity, viral plaque formation, and production of cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. This bedside-to-bench study suggests that NRICM101 may disrupt disease progression through its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, offering promise as a multi-target agent for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

Predicting and overcoming radioresistance are crucial in radiation oncology, including in managing oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). First, we used RNA-sequence to compare expression profiles of parent OML1 and radioresistant OML1-R OSCC cells in order to select candidate genes responsible for radiation sensitivity. We identified IRAK2, a key immune mediator of the IL-1R/TLR signaling, as a potential target in investigating radiosensitivity. In four OSCC cell lines, we observed that intrinsically low IRAK2 expression demonstrated a radioresistant phenotype (i.e., OML1-R and SCC4), and vice versa (i.e., OML1 and SCC25). Next, we overexpressed IRAK2 in low IRAK2-expression OSCC cells and knocked it down in high IRAK2-expression cells to examine changes of irradiation response. After ionizing radiation (IR) exposure, IRAK2 overexpression enhanced the radiosensitivity of radioresistant cells and synergistically suppressed OSCC cell growth both in vitro and in vivo, and vice versa. We found that IRAK2 overexpression restored and enhanced radiosensitivity by enhancing IR-induced cell killing via caspase-8/3-dependent apoptosis. OSCC patients with high IRAK2 expression had better post-irradiation local control than those with low expression (i.e., 87.4% vs. 60.0% at five years, P = 0.055), showing that IRAK2 expression was associated with post-radiation recurrence. Multivariate analysis confirmed high IRAK2 expression as an independent predictor for local control (HR, 0.11; 95% CI, 0.016 – 0.760; P = 0.025). In conclusion, IRAK2 enhances radiosensitivity, via modulating caspase 8/3-medicated apoptosis, potentially playing double roles as a predictive biomarker and a novel therapeutic target in OSCC.

During the treatment planning stage of the radiotherapy, the medical physicists or doctors have to delineate the contour of the tumor and the organs at risk in order to accurately deliver enough radiation energy to the tumor and reduce such exposure to the surrounding normal tissues. Organ contouring is a time-consuming and laborious task. An automatic contouring tool is definitely required to fulfill the needs of the increasing cancer population. In this work, we proposed a fusion model that combines the network characteristics of a sequential model (sensor3D) and Attention U-Net. In which the convolutional LSTM layer is applied to study the spatial correlation between different layers in a CT image data set. The attention mechanism suppresses the irrelevant features from the complex image content and focuses on the useful messages of target organs. The clinical data contained CT image series of 108 patients and was acquired from a local hospital with IRB approval. The proposed model segmented five types of organs, lung, liver, stomach, esophagus, and heart. The segmentation accuracy rates of Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) were 99.27%, 95.48%, 88.19%, 80.81%, and 93.8%, respectively. We further developed a user interface that converts the AI-generated results into DICOM-RT format. Therefore the radiologists can fine-tune the results under the software used to do the routine manual-delineation tasks.

Low engagement with climate change may stem from the tendency to discount the distant benefits of mitigation action. Hence, a reduced tendency to discount the future should be associated with increased involvement in climate change mitigation. Prior research has demonstrated that episodic future thinking (EFT, i.e., envisioning future events that involve self-projection) can reduce discounting. In two laboratory studies, we showed that engaging in EFT about mitigation action was associated with a lower discounting tendency toward future environmental gains (Experiments 1 and 2) and a greater tendency to act pro-environmentally, as manifested by using air conditioning in an energy-saving manner (Experiment 1), choosing a meal with less environmental impact (Experiment 2), and willingness to participate in beach cleaning (Experiment 2). The present findings suggest that engagement in EFT about mitigation action may represent a promising strategy for improving personal involvement in climate change.

Social distance regulations have been suggested as one of the best ways to control and prevent the spread of coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). Social connection and food are intertwined because both have played critical evolutionary roles in human survival. We tested whether the substitutability hypothesis in human motivation applies here in that cues signaling scarcity in one domain (e.g., social connection) might enhance the desire to acquire resources in another domain (e.g., food). In a laboratory experiment (N = 118), we found that, compared with controls, participants primed with social distancing consumed more ice cream in a taste test and reported a greater likelihood that they would engage in binge eating if they were placed in home quarantine. We may be the first to provide experimental evidence that social distancing can enhance the desire for food. The link between social distancing and the desire for food is pertinent to understanding how strongly social distance regulations may influence weight gain. Our findings have far-reaching implications for weight control under social distance regulations for prevention and control of COVID-19.

Eighteen known compounds, including lignans, phenylpropanoids, triterpenoids, and phytosterols, were isolated from Balanophora laxiflora (Balanophoraceae). The inhibitory activities of these compounds on the production of nitric oxide (NO), a pro-inflammatory mediator, were evaluated. Compounds isolariciresinol (1), ethyl caffeate (13) and ferulic aldehyde (16) showed potent to mild inhibitory activities on LPS-stimulated NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages with IC(subscript 50) values of 0.81, 7.29, and 98.67 μM, respectively. The results showed that compound 1 had a potent effect on TNF-α production with an IC(subscript 50) value of 0.87μM, but practically no effect on IL-6 synthesis. In addition, an inhibitory effect of compound 1 on nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) activation was shown by the repression of LPS-stimulated s-lactamase reporter activity. Taken together, these results demonstrated that compound 1 modulates the production of inflammatory mediators through the attenuation of NF-kB transcription signaling.

Osteogenesis plays a vital role in the maintenance of bone health. Imbalances in osteogenesis influence the onset of several bone loss-associated diseases. The intake of Uraria crinita (Fabaceae) through dietary supplements is advised for childhood bone dysplasia. This botanical provides edible tonics and detoxifiers, and is also used as a folk beverage. We evaluated the osteogenic effects of a 50% ethanol extract of the root of U. crinita on primary human osteoblasts (HObs) and initiated a novel comprehensive phytochemical strategy using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for quality control of this functional food. Two isoflavones, genistein (5) and 5,7-dihydroxy-3',5'-dihydroxyisoflavone (6), increased the alkaline phosphatase activity (differentiation stage); the flavone glycoside vitexin (1), and the phenolic acid salicylic acid (2) enhanced the mineralization (mature stage). The isoflavone 2'-hydroxygenistein (4) possessed high osteogenic potential among the isolated compounds in HObs. It promoted osteogenesis-related stages and upregulated the gene expressions in a dose-dependent manner. The major compounds in the active fraction were quantitatively analyzed via phytochemical fingerprint detection. These LC-MS/MS-based phytochemical perspectives can act as reference standards in developing food supplements from U. crinita.

A domino method for the rapid syntheses of 1-azabicyclo[x.y.0]alkane scaffolds, such as indolizidines, quinolizidines, decahydropyridoazepines, and their derivatives, has been developed. This strategy involved a rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of allyl-, 3-butenyl-, or homoallyl amides, followed by two spontaneous ring closures under mild conditions. The reaction scope and diastereoselectivity were fully explored by changing the substitution pattern on the amide and by altering the length of the carbon chain. This method was applied to the syntheses of natural alkaloids tashiromine and epilupinine. The clear differences between the reactivities of two isomeric amide substrates, 3-butenamide 1 j and homoallyl amide 1 i, could be attributed to better HOMO-LUMO overlap in the transition states that were derived from butenamides during cyclization. This explanation was supported by DFT calculations.

International audience; Current molecular phylogenetic analyses support the monophyly and circumscription of the athyrioid fern genus Deparia (Athyr-iaceae), which includes previously recognized genera including Athyriopsis, 3Depazium, Dictyodroma, Dryoathyrium (5 Parathyrium), Lunathyrium, and Neotriblemma (5 Triblemma Ching), and 3Neotribleparia. This broad generic concept has been adopted in several recent taxonomic treatments, including the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group I. However, the infrageneric taxonomy of Deparia still needs further revision. In this study, we provide a new infrageneric classification with five sections and three subsections based on the phylogenetic evidence. We recognize two new sections, sect. Dictyodroma and sect. Erectus, and two new subsections, sect. Deparia subsect. Caespites and subsect. Athyriopsis. In addition, we provide a key to the sections and subsections, a table of diagnostic characters, new combinations for three Deparia and one Diplazium species, and a list of species assigned to the sections/subsections. Hybrids derived from crosses between the sections and subsections are also noted.

Research has found that many people view climate change as a psychologically distant, future threat, which leads them to be less motivated to engage in pro-environmental behavior. Engaging in episodic future thinking (EFT; projecting the self into the future to pre-experience future events) may facilitate the perception of future events as psychologically close, thereby increasing the perceived risk associated with those events. Therefore, engagement in EFT regarding climate change–related risks should induce higher risk perceptions and lead to acting pro-environmentally. In two experiments, we demonstrated that engaging in EFT to pre-experience climate change–related risk events was associated with a higher level of risk perception and a greater tendency toward pro-environmental behavior, including energy-saving use of air-conditioning (Experiment 1), willingness to participate in beach cleaning (Experiment 2), and choice of a meal with lower environmental impact (Experiment 2). The current research provides experimental evidence for an innovative approach to improving public engagement with climate change.

A new species was collected during a fern expedition in the Nuluhon Trusmadi Forest Reserve, Sabah, Borneo. Morphologically, it is similar to both Pteris decrescens Christ and P. parviloba Christ but can be distinguished by frond characters. Specifically, the new species differs from the other two species by having basiscopic secondary pinnae (vs. without basiscopic secondary pinnae), petiolulate pinnae (vs. sessile pinnae), without bristles on the stipes (vs. with bristles on the stipes), a crenate margin of the pinna-segment apex (vs. a serrate apex), and entire pseudoindusia (vs. ciliate pseudoindusia). Furthermore, P. decrescens and P. parviloba differ in the number of lateral pinnae (5 or 6 vs. 8–16 pairs) and the length of the basal pinna-segments being shortest or longest of all lateral pinnae. Two plastid genes, rbcL and matK, were used to decipher their phylogenetic relationships. The new species was resolved in different clades from P. decrescens and P. parviloba, providing further support of its uniqueness. The morphology, illustrations, ecology, and distribution of the new species are provided. We also found that the type materials of P. decrescens included two different species, P. decrescens and P. parviloba.A lectotype of P. decrescens was therefore designated. Based on the results of this study, P. decrescens and P. parviloba are re-circumscribed, and the new species is described as P. borneensis sp. nov.

Research has shown that viewing stimuli that induce mating or sex motivation can push men towards greater impulsivity, a manifestation of lower self-control. Recent advances in research on the connection between self-control and moral behavior indicate that low self-control is associated with increased dishonesty. From an evolutionary perspective, when mating motivation is activated, men may behave in dishonest ways by projecting characteristics in line with women's mate preferences to enhance their sexual attractiveness. We tested the possibility that exposure to pictures of sexually appealing women would engender lower self-control, leading men to behave dishonestly. The results showed that a state of lower self-control was observed in males who viewed women rated high on sexual attractiveness but not in males who viewed women rated low on sexual attractiveness or in females who viewed men (Experiment 1). Compared with control participants, male participants exposed to pictures of sexy women were less likely to return excess money received for participating (Experiment 2) and more likely to cheat in a matrix task (Experiments 3 and 4). State self-control mediated the link between exposure to sexual stimuli and dishonest behavior in men (Experiments 2 and 4). For men whose mating motivation is heightened by exposure to sexual stimuli, dishonesty appears to be a tactic for projecting characteristics preferred by women (e.g., large economic resources).

Pteris fauriei is widely distributed in Eastern Asia and has high morphological variation. Some morphologically similar plants related to this species are difficult to distinguish. We showed that the new Pteris species from Taiwan, previously identified as P. fauriei, can be morphologically distinguished by its wide pinnae, larger terminal pinnae than the lateral pinnae in sterile fronds, and triangular basal segments of the lateral pinnae. It was confirmed that this species is phylogenetically separated from the other East Asian Pteris species, except for a morphologically distinct species P. arisanensis, by means of chloroplast genes, rbcL and matK. The new species is named as Pteris latipinna sp. nov., referring to its wide pinnae. Here, we provide a key to facilitate the identification of the morphologically similar Pteris species in Asia. The morphological descriptions, images, ecology, and distribution are also presented.

Radioresistance is a major contributor to radiotherapy failure. In this study, we used patient-derived cells and a radiation-resistant cell line in vitro and in vivo for two purposes: evaluate the anti-tumor effects and understand the mechanisms in the dual PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway regulation of radiosensitization. Our findings indicate that in OML1-R cells, the radioresistance phenotype is associated with activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Compared to a combination of PI3K or mTOR inhibitors and radiation, dual blockade of the PI3K and mTOR kinases significantly improved radiation efficacy in oral cancer and patient-derived OSCC cells. Dual PI3K/mTOR inhibition enhanced the effect of radiation by inhibiting AKT/mTOR signaling pathways and caused G1 phase arrest, which is associated with downregulation of cyclin D1/CDK4 activity, leading to growth inhibition. In nude mice xenografted with radioresistant OML1-R cells, the combined treatment was also more effective than RT alone in reducing tumor growth. This treatment was also demonstrated to be dependent on the inhibition of protein kinase-dependent S6 kinase pathway and eIF4E-mediated cap-dependent translation. These findings indicate that activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway has a role in radioresistance of OSCC. We determined that a PI3K/mTOR inhibitor combined with radiation exhibits synergistic inhibition of the AKT/mTOR axis and induces cell cycle arrest. Our results show the therapeutic potential of drugs targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway should be new candidate drugs for radiosensitization in radiotherapy.

A facile formal synthesis to aphanorphine and its analogue is described, featuring Rh-catalyzed cyclohydrocarbonylation of 2-aminodihydronaphthalene to the bridged benzazepine core. Subsequent introduction of the methyl group and functional group transformation complete the synthesis of aphanorphine and its analogue over eight steps.

Radiotherapy (RT) is a crucial treatment modality in managing cancer patients. However, irradiation dose sprinkling to tumor-adjacent normal tissues is unavoidable, generating treatment toxicities, such as radiation-associated cardiovascular dysfunction (RACVD), particularly for those patients with combined therapies or pre-existing adverse features/comorbidities. Radiation oncologists implement several efforts to decrease heart dose for reducing the risk of RACVD. Even applying the deep-inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) technique, the risk of RACVD is though reduced but still substantial. Besides, available clinical methods are limited for early detecting and managing RACVD. The present study reviewed emerging challenges of RACVD in modern radiation oncology, in terms of clinical practice, bench investigation, and multidisciplinary care. Several molecules are potential for serving as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Of these, miRNAs, endogenous small non-coding RNAs that function in regulating gene expression, are of particular interest because low-dose irradiation, i.e., 200 mGy (one-tenth of conventional RT daily dose) induces early changes of pro-RACVD miRNA expression. Moreover, several miRNAs, e.g., miR-15b and miR21, involve in the development of RACVD, further demonstrating the potential bio-application in RACVD. Remarkably, many RACVDs are late RT sequelae, characterizing highly irreversible and progressively worse. Thus, multidisciplinary care from oncologists and cardiologists is crucial. Combined managements with commodities control (such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes), smoking cessation, and close monitoring are recommended. Some agents show abilities for preventing and managing RACVD, such as statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs); however, their real roles should be confirmed by further prospective trials.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a major bone health issue worldwide. There is an unmet medical need for osteoporosis treatments, a disease which disproportionately impacts women. Exploring botanicals to prevent or treat osteoporosis is currently an interest of investigations. Rhizomes of Davallia mariesii T. Moore ex Baker (Davalliacea) are used an indigenous herbal medicine in Asia for injuries due to fractures, contusions, and strains. Aim of the study In the present study, we investigated the osteogenic effect of the water extract of rhizomes of D. mariesii (DMH) on bone loss induced by an ovariectomy (OVX) in mice and also its impact on osteogenesis in primary human osteoblasts (HObs). Additionally, we performed a quantitative analysis of compounds in the DMH extract. Materials and methods OVX C57BL/6J mice were orally administrated DMH extract for 12 weeks, and microarchitecture parameters were examined by microcomputed tomography. DMH extract was fractionated in a bio-guided manner, and fractions were isolated to obtain active compounds using HObs. Cell viability was evaluated by an MTT assay. Characteristics of early and late osteogenesis were analyzed by alkaline phosphatase activity and a mineralization assay. Molecular mechanisms were explored by a real-time quantitative PCR. Compounds in the DMH extract were identified and quantified using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS). Results DMH improved bone mineral densities of vertebrae and the femur. Through microarchitectural observations, DMH significantly decreased the bone surface/volume ratio and trabecular separation, and also increased the connectivity density in the OVX group. Additionally, DMH inhibited osteoclast differentiation in receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand-induced osteoclasts and increased bone formation in HObs. After bio-guided fractionation and isolation, we found that eriodictyol-7-O-β- d -glucuronide (2) significantly increased alkaline phosphatase activity, and 5-O-β- d -(6-O-vanilloylglucopyranosyl)gentisic acid (3) substantially enhanced mineral deposition. In HObs, compound 3 was more potent in upregulating expressions of bone morphogenetic protein-2, bone sialoprotein, osteopontin, osterix, and estrogen receptor-α. The amount of bioactive compound 3 in DMH was 5.68 ± 0.64 mg/g of dry weight according to LC-MS/MS. Conclusion For the first time we report that D. mariesii and its isolated compounds demonstrated potent osteogenic activities. Quantitative results of D. mariesii could be a reference for phytochemical analyses.

The multifaceted nature of the right to be forgotten suggests that the concept actually has many different roots and serves different interests. Four kinds of the right to be forgotten are explored and discussed in Taiwan’s legal contexts. Both the right to request deletion of personal data and more specifically the right to de-indexing on internet are commonly understood as honoring individual will or choice. It could be easily outweighed by more compelling interests of public’s right to know and the freedom of press. However, the right of oblivion for the purpose of social rehabilitation and the right as independence from power in an era of big data deepen the meaning of the right to be forgotten and relate the concept to more democratic values.

The commonly used vaccine for adults with a high risk of pneumonia is 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). However, its effectiveness in patients with colorectal cancer has not been investigated. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of PPSV23 in reducing the risk of pneumonia among elderly patients with colorectal cancer. A total of 120,605 newly diagnosed patients with colorectal cancer were identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 1996 and 2010. Of these patients, 18,468 were 75 years or older in 2007 to 2010, and 3515 received PPSV23. People aged 75 years or older have been considered eligible for receiving PPSV23 vaccination in Taiwan since 2007. The specific “vaccination period” of October 2008 to December 2008 was used to minimize the potential immortal time bias. Therefore, 893 patients who received PPSV23 outside this vaccination period or died before 2009 and 2960 unvaccinated patients who died before 2009 were excluded. After the propensity score was matched with a 1:3 ratio, 2622 vaccinated patients and 7866 unvaccinated patients were recruited. A multivariate log-linear Poisson regression model was performed and adjusted for potential confounders, including influenza vaccination, vaccination period, cancer treatment modalities, comorbidities, and sociodemographic variables. After 2 years of follow-up, the incidence rate of the pneumonia hospitalization of the vaccinated patients was significantly lower than that of the unvaccinated patients at 85.53 per 1000 person-years (PYs) of the former and 92.38 per 1000 PYs of the latter. The proportions of patients who had 2, 3, and >3 pneumonia hospitalizations per year were consistently lower in the vaccinated group than in the unvaccinated group (1.9% vs 2.0%, 0.5% vs 0.9%, and 0.7% vs 1.1%, respectively). After adjustment for covariates was made, PPSV23 vaccine was significantly associated with a reduced risk of pneumonia hospitalization, with an adjusted incidence rate ratio of 0.88 (P = .040). The overall pneumonia-free survival rate was also significantly higher in the vaccinated patients than in the unvaccinated patients (P = .001). PPSV23 vaccination was associated with a significantly reduced rate of pneumonia hospitalization in elderly patients with colorectal cancer.

The electrical characterization of System on Integrated Chips (SoIC™), an innovative 3D heterogeneous integration technology manufactured in front-end of line with known-good-die is reported. Chiplets integration of devices including foundry leading edge 7nm FinFET technology with SoIC™ illustrates its advantages in high bandwidth density and high power efficiency, as compared with 2.5D and conventional 3D-IC with micro-bump/TSV.

Backgrond and rationale Social distance regulations have been suggested as one of the best ways to control and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Social connection and food are intertwined because both have played critical evolutionary roles in human survival. We tested whether the substitutability hypothesis in human motivation applies here in that cues signaling scarcity in one domain (e.g., social connection) might enhance the desire to acquire resources in another domain (e.g., food). Methods We recruited 140 adults from Kaohsiung City (the largest city in southern Taiwan) to participate in a laboratory experiment. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either social distancing or neutral primes via an emotional-event recollection technique. The amount of ice cream eaten during a taste test and the self-reported likelihood of binge eating served as the dependent measures. Results We found that, compared with controls, participants primed with social distancing consumed more ice cream in a taste test and reported a greater likelihood that they would engage in binge eating if they were placed in home quarantine. Conclusions We may be the first to provide experimental evidence that social distancing can enhance the desire for food. The link between social distancing and the desire for food is pertinent to understanding how strongly social distance regulations may influence weight gain. Our findings have far-reaching implications for weight control under social distance regulations for prevention and control of COVID-19.

Chemical investigation of the rhizomes of Helminthostachys zeylanica led to the isolation of eight new flavonoids including six cyclized geranylflavonoids, ugonins V-X (1-3), (10R,11S)-ugonin N (4), (10R,11S)-ugonin S (5), and ugonin Y (6), as well as two quercetin glucosides, quercetin-4'-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-d-glucopyranoside (7) and quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-4'-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-d-glucopyranoside (8). The structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic analyses and acid hydrolysis of the sugar moiety. Among the isolated compounds, 1, 2, 5, 6, ugonins J-S (9-13), ugonstilbene A (14), and ugonin L (23) were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in microglial cells. Except for 1, 5, and 13, all other compounds inhibited NO production with IC50 values of 6.2-10.1 μM and were more potent than the positive control, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate. Compounds 1, 2, 5, 6, and 10-13 were tested for antiosteoporotic activities, and ugonin K (10) exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation in RAW264.7 cells with an IC50 value of 1.8 ± 0.2 μM.

People are beginning to develop symbiotic relationships with social networking sites (SNSs), which provide users with abundant opportunities for social interaction. We contend that if people perceive SNSs as sources of social connection, the idea of SNSs may reduce the desire to pursue offline social activities and offline pleasures. Experiment 1 demonstrated that priming with SNSs was associated with a weakened desirability of offline social activities and an increased inclination to work alone. Felt relatedness mediated the link between SNS primes and reduced desire to engage in offline social activities. Experiment 2 showed that exposure to SNS primes reduced the desirability of offline socializing and lowered the desire for offline pleasurable experiences as well. Moreover, heavy users were more susceptible to this detrimental effect. We provide the first experimental evidence that the idea of online social networking may modulate users' engagement in offline social activities and offline pleasures. Hence, online social networking may satisfy the need for relatedness but undercut the likelihood of reaping enjoyment from offline social life.

Ferns and lycophytes produce spores to initiate the gametophyte stage for sexual reproduction. Approximately 10% of these seedless vascular plants are apomictic, and produce genomic unreduced spores. Genome size comparisons between spores and leaves are a reliable, and potentially easier way to determine their reproductive mode compared to traditional approaches. However, estimation of the spore genome sizes of these plants has not been attempted. We attempted to evaluate the spore genome sizes of ferns and lycophytes using flow cytometry, collected spores from selected species representing different spore physical properties and taxonomic groups, and sought to optimize bead-vortexing conditions. By evaluating the spore and sporophyte genome sizes, we examined whether reproductive modes could be ascertained from these flow cytometry results. We proposed two separate sets of optimized bead-vortexing conditions for the nuclear extraction of green and nongreen spores. We further successfully extracted spore nuclei of 19 families covering most orders, and the qualities and quantities of these extractions satisfied the C-value criteria. These evaluated genome sizes further supported the reproductive modes reported previously. In the current study, flow cytometry was used for the first time to evaluate the spore genome sizes of ferns and lycophytes. This use of spore flow cytometry provides a new, efficient approach to ascertaining the reproductive modes of these plants.

The wide geographical distribution of many fern species is related to their high dispersal ability. However, very limited studies surveyed biological traits that could contribute to colonization success after dispersal. In this study, we applied phylogenetic approaches to infer historical biogeography of the fern genus Deparia (Athyriaceae, Eupolypods II). Because polyploids are suggested to have better colonization abilities and are abundant in Deparia, we also examined whether polyploidy could be correlated to long-distance dispersal events and whether polyploidy could play a role in these dispersals/establishment and range expansion. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic reconstructions were based on a four-region combined cpDNA dataset (rps16-matK IGS, trnL-L-F, matK and rbcL; a total of 4252 characters) generated from 50 ingroup (ca. 80% of the species diversity) and 13 outgroup taxa. Using the same sequence alignment and maximum likelihood trees, we carried out molecular dating analyses. The resulting chronogram was used to reconstruct ancestral distribution using the DEC model and ancestral ploidy level using ChromEvol. We found that Deparia originated around 27.7 Ma in continental Asia/East Asia. A vicariant speciation might account for the disjunctive distribution of East Asia–northeast North America. There were multiple independent long-distance dispersals to Africa/Madagascar (at least once), Southeast Asia (at least once), south Pacific islands (at least twice), Australia/New Guinea/New Zealand (at least once), and the Hawaiian Islands (at least once). In particular, the long-distance dispersal to the Hawaiian Islands was associated with polyploidization, and the dispersal rate was slightly higher in the polyploids than in diploids. Moreover, we found five species showing recent infraspecific range expansions, all of which took place concurrently with polyploidization. In conclusion, our study provides the first investigation using phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses trying to explore the link between historical biogeography and ploidy evolution in a fern genus and our results imply that polyploids might be better colonizers than diploids.

Molecular imaging of reporter gene expression in cancer cells can provide rapid, sensitive and non-invasive monitoring of tumor behavior. The aim of the present study was to establish a non-invasive method to measure tumor size and distribution in vivo. Briefly, H-Ras-transformed cells were stably transfected with a plasmid containing the luciferase gene (Luc), designated as Ras/Luc. Ras/Luc cells were injected into the back or tail vein of nude BALB/cAnN-Foxn1nu/CrlNarl mice (age, 6–8 weeks). Mice were subsequently administered D-luciferin via intra-peritoneal injection, prior to image acquisition. Photons emitted from the mice were detected via an imaging system. Tumor size and distribution in vivo were quantified as photons/second. Andrographolide has demonstrated radiosensitization in previous in vitro and in vivo studies. In the present study, the potential effects of andrographolide cancer metastasis were investigated further, using an imaging system. Preliminary results of andrographolide combined with radiation indicated the inhibition of cancer metastasis. The present mechanistic study of andrographolide-mediated effects demonstrated that activated extracellular signal regulated kinase protein and H2O2 production levels were significantly increased by andrographolide. In summary, the present study established a non-invasive method to measure tumor size and distribution in vivo and indicated that andrographolide may be a potential therapeutic strategy in cancer therapy.

Dryopteris subgenus Nothoperanema (Dryopteridaceae) includes sections Acrophorus, Diacalpe, Nothoperanema, and Peranema. Phylogenetic relationships among these sections and their relationship to sect. Dryopsis (genus Dryopteris subgenus Erythrovariae, Dryopteridaceae) are unclear. Additionally, previous phylogenetic work has not included Stenolepia, which has been suggested as an important relative of Peranema based on morphology. In this study, we examined phylogenetic relationships within subgenus Nothoperanema by including Stenolepia and utilizing six plastid regions (∼5,500 characters). Our inferred phylogeny revealed that sect. Dryopsis is not monophyletic. The Nothoperanema clade is highly supported, and includes sect. Acrophorus, sect. Diacalpe, sect. Nothoperanema, sect. Background: This study investigated: (1) the effects of the loving-kindness meditation (LKM) on mindfulness, subjective well-being (SWB), and spirituality and (2) the relationships between mindfulness, spirituality, and SWB. Methods: 98 flight attendants from Xiamen Airlines in China were recruited and randomly assigned to the LKM training group (n = 49) or the waiting control group (n = 49). The LKM training group underwent an 8-week LKM training intervention, and the control group did not undergo intervention. The three main variables (SWB, mindfulness, and spirituality) were measured both before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the LKM training intervention. Results: In the experimental group, SWB and spirituality increased significantly. In the control group, no significant differences were observed for the three variables between the pre-test and post-test. Conclusions: Our results indicated that LKM may help to improve SWB and spirituality. However, the mechanisms which underlie the effects of the LKM on mindfulness, spirituality, SWB, and other psychological constructs require further elucidation.

Consumers tend to evaluate services based on the time required to perform such services, when the value of the latter positively correlates with efficiency. This study investigated how consumers use the efficiency heuristic, referring to the tendency of consumers to infer the value of a service from the perceived efficiency with which it is performed. We studied 81 participants who had experienced car problems. The relationship between time devoted to a given service and judgments about its value showed a quadratic trend, with an inverted U-shape, in regard to a service in which value was related to efficiency. Specifically, participants judged services to be more valuable when they involved relatively moderate amounts of time to complete, compared to when they involved comparatively shorter or longer periods of time. The current research suggests that when a service was judged in terms of efficiency, consumers seemed to apply the efficiency heuristic not only to the time required for service performance, but also to labor costs.
