With industrialisation, radical alterations in the life of many rapidly developing countries are visible. Lack of well-designed and appropriate safety measures leads to serious adverse health consequences to the workforce found in MSMEs. Workplace injuries are a leading cause of substantial disabilities globally. According to the International Labour Organization, 270 million workplace accidents occur annually. The factors that emerged to significantly influence personal protective equipment (PPE) use included acceptability, availability, attractive and not using PPE despite being trained and aware of the hazard. There was no significant relationship between lack of co-worker/supervisor influence to use of PPE and social demographics. It is recommended that employers and other stakeholder intensify their roles on PPE policy guidelines, training and awareness campaigns, compliance surveillance on PPE use by all workers in these industries as well as ensure a safe working environment. Employers should ensure that PPE are available, accessible, well-fitting and comfortable to wear and that they are used appropriately and consistently by the workers at all times. PPE is any material, device, equipment or clothing used or worn by workers to protect them from exposure or contact with any harmful material or energy which may cause injury, disease or even death. The study assessed the utilisation of PPE among workers in small-scale industries in Chennai city. The study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive design. Purposive sampling technique was used to select Chennai city. Simple random sampling was used to select 10 industries that were included in the study. This study was carried out to understand the perspective of unskilled Sri Lankan employees in the manufacturing industry to gain a deeper understanding to learn how to utilize expatriate labor meaningfully in a host country workplace. The structural questionnaire was developed according to previous studies and international labor standards and was validated with an expert in the field. The questionnaire included three parts covering the basic information, perception of workplace hazards, and health and safety awareness of workers. Unfamiliar work practices and processes due to lack of safety and work training have become an impediment. Further investigation of this study shows that language is one of the main barriers to living and working in Korea, the findings of this study indicate where employment permit system (EPS) workers appear to be fervent and our research exhibits the unrevealed image of EPS workers in the Republic of Korea. Timber harvesting processes, especially motor-manual felling, are hazardous to forestry workers' health and safety. The purpose of this study is to examine forestry workers' mental safety models (at the supervisor and operator levels) using the Nordic safety climate questionnaire. This study also examines how operators and their families perceive workplace risks (dread and unknown risk factors). The safety climate analysis revealed that supervisors misunderstand management safety priority, competence, empowerment and justice. Additionally, this study found that operators do not yet prioritize safety. There was a lack of safety communication and operators' skepticism about the current safety system. These findings highlight the critical importance of implementing safety measures into operators' work environments. The risk perception analysis revealed that family members had a greater risk aversion to dread risk factors than operators. An ever-increasing number of workplaces are becoming heat-exposed due to rising temperature extremes. However, a comprehensive review of Canadian safety materials available to support workplaces in managing this critical hazard has not previously been conducted. We undertook a review and a content analysis of heat stress materials on safety-based ministry, association, and agency websites in Canada (n = 155) to identify content related to heat stress (n = 595). Each document was qualitatively analyzed using NVivo. The most dominant components identified were heat stress control measures (n = 492, 83%), training and education (n = 414, 70%), workplaces and workers at risk (n = 361, 61%), exposure limits and monitoring practices (n = 344, 58%), and emergency response and reporting (n = 249, 42%). However, the content within these programming components was highly variable. This study describes the process of developing a high-impact, low-cost, and low-maintenance air ventilation system for anatomy facilities. It employed the strategic application of Value Engineering (VE), assuring that the air ventilation system meets contemporary threshold limit values (TLVs) for formaldehyde in the working zone of dissection tables. A creative-innovative construction methodology was used, combining the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ/TIPS) and VE for an anatomy laboratory air ventilation concept. The TRIZ/TIPS aimed to resolve conflicts that impeded progress toward higher ideality, while VE aimed to develop alternative approaches to fulfill required functions at a minimal cost. The findings were first trialed in a mockup while dissecting human tissues embalmed with two protocols. The experimental results were validated by computational fluid dynamics simulations, and then followed by a pilot and commissioning phase once the physical installation of the dissection laboratory concluded. The findings demonstrate the superiority of the combined TRIZ/TIPS and VE approach in terms of air distribution and efficient formaldehyde extraction within the breathing zone. A formaldehyde exposition below 0.1 ppm, lowered air exchange rates, and system usability proved that the given third-generation ventilation system complies with contemporary TLVs and potential changes in user requirements. The third-generation ventilation system offers a cost-effective, high-impact, and low-maintenance solution for state-of-the-art air ventilation systems in the anatomy dissection laboratory. Migrant workers constitute nearly one-third of Saudi Arabia's population, with a significant portion engaged in low-skilled manual labour. Limited data exists on work-related injuries and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among workers. The current cross-sectional survey focused on seven occupational groups, (i.e., auto-repair workers, city cleaners, construction workers, hairdressers, hospital cleaners, poultry factory workers, and restaurant workers) in the Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The sample of 2123 workers were predominantly men (85.3%) and from the Indian subcontinent (64.9%). Among the workers, 21.5% reported having one or more work-related injuries, with cuts (27%), slipping/falling (17%), and thermal injuries (9%) being the most common. Compliance with PPE varied across professions, with city cleaners (86.1%) and restaurant workers (85%) being the most compliant. The study highlights a concerning prevalence of injuries and insufficient PPE usage among migrant workers, emphasizing the need to enhance workplace safety.

ObjectiveDue to the COVID-19 pandemic, non-married people are at high risk of loneliness. With social interactions restricted, it is important for non-married people to acquire a new romantic partner for their mental health and quality of life. We hypothesized that infection control efforts in the workplace influence people's social interactions, including romantic activities.MethodsWe conducted an internet-based prospective cohort study from December 2020 (baseline) to December 2021, using self-administered questionnaires. Briefly, 27,036 workers completed the questionnaires at baseline, and when followed up after 1 year, 18,560 (68.7%) participated. A total of 6,486 non-married individuals with no romantic relationship at baseline were included in the analysis. At baseline they were asked about the implementation of infection control measures in the workplace, and at follow-up they were asked about activities they performed with a view to romantic relationships during the period from baseline to follow-up.ResultsCompared to workers in workplaces with no infection control measures, the odds ratio (OR) associated with romance-related activities for those in workplaces with seven or more infection control measures was 1.90 (95% CI: 1.45–2.48, p < 0.001), and the OR associated with having a new romantic partner was 1.79 (95% CI: 1.20–2.66, p = 0.004).DiscussionUnder the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of infection control measures in the workplace and the expressed satisfaction with those measures promoted romantic relationships among non-married, single individuals.

Orientation: The manufacturing sector in Kenya has been experiencing employee safety and productivity issues despite adopting safety programmes and laws regulating employee safety. Employee safety attitudes significantly worsen workplace safety and productivity problems. Research purpose: The study determined the intervening effect of workplace safety attitudes on the relationship between workplace safety and employee productivity in manufacturing firms in Kenya. Motivation for the study: Manufacturing firms adopt new technologies that expose employees to new safety risks, while globalisation has led to a diverse workforce with diverse safety attitudes. Research approach/design and method: This study is grounded on the risk homeostasis theory; it adopted a cross-sectional survey research design guided by a positivist research philosophy. The target population comprised 853 manufacturing firms registered with the Kenya Association of Manufacturers. A sample of 124 firms distributed across the 14 sub-sectors in the manufacturing sector was obtained using a statistical formula to ensure all sectors were represented. Regression analysis was carried out in four steps to assess the intervening effect of workplace safety attitude on the relationship between workplace safety attitude and employee productivity. Main findings: The coefficients were significant in each step, therefore leading to the conclusion that employee safety attitude significantly intervened in the relationship between workplace safety and employee productivity. Practical/managerial implications: The study offers managerial insights into the situational position of workplace safety, employee safety attitudes and employee productivity. Contribution/value-add: The study provides epistemological insights on the impact of employee safety attitudes on workplace safety and employee productivity.

Objective: This study explored the effects of hearing protection devices (HPDs) and head protection on the ability of normal-hearing individuals to localize reverse alarms in background noise. Background: Among factors potentially contributing to accidents involving heavy vehicles, reverse alarms can be difficult to localize in space, leading to errors in identifying the source of danger. Previous studies have shown that traditional tonal alarms are more difficult to localize than broadband alarms. In addition, HPDs and safety helmets may further impair localization. Method: Standing in the middle of an array of eight loudspeakers, participants with and without HPDs (passive and level-dependent) had to identify the loudspeaker emitting a single cycle of the alarm while performing a task on a tablet computer. Results: The broadband alarm was easier to localize than the tonal alarm. Passive HPDs had a significant impact on sound localization (earmuffs generally more so than earplugs), particularly double hearing protection, and level-dependent HPDs did not fully restore sound localization abilities. The safety helmet had a much lesser impact on performance than HPDs. Conclusion: Where good sound localization abilities are essential in noisy workplaces, the broadband alarm should be used, double hearing protection should be avoided, and earplug-style passive or level-dependent devices may be a better choice than earmuff-style devices. Construction safety helmets, however, seem to have only a minimal effect on sound localization. Relating workplace injury and illness rates to import competition in the U.S. manufacturing sector, we identify two main empirical patterns. First, industries facing more intense import competition have lower workplace injury and illness rates. Second, jobs within industries facing more intense import competition are composed of a higher proportion of safe jobs and lower proportion of dangerous jobs compared with industries facing less intense import competition. Background: Mobile apps addressing a variety of workplace safety issues have proliferated over the last decade as mobile technology has advanced and smartphone ownership has increased. Workplace safety interventions are often designed for a specific work site. However, some of the most dangerous jobs are ones in which workers frequently change field locations, such as commercial fishing. Mobile apps may be particularly suitable for delivering safety interventions to these workers. Objective: We sought to gauge the potential for using mobile apps to deliver safety interventions to commercial fishing workers. The purpose of this paper is to describe how fishermen use their mobile devices during fishing operations and identify any mobile apps they already use for safety. Methods: Participants comprised commercial fishing captains who already owned an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. They completed a questionnaire that asked about their current mobile device use and their use of safety-related mobile apps, in addition to questions about their fishing operations. We performed descriptive analyses of the data. Results: A total of 61 participants completed the questionnaire. The most common types of mobile devices participants reported owning were iPhones (n=36, 59%) and Android phones (n=24, 39%). Most participants (n=53, 87%) reported using their mobile device for both work and personal purposes, including while out at sea (n=52, 85%). Over half of the participants reported that they had either safety-related apps (n=17, 28%) or apps that help them with their work (n=35, 57%). The types of apps most frequently mentioned were apps for weather, wind, tides, and navigation. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that some commercial fishing captains who own a mobile device are receptive to using safety-related apps for work. Apps that help avoid hazards by monitoring environmental conditions and apps optimized for use on smartphones may be most likely to be adopted and used. Although prior research on shareholder activism has highlighted how such activism can economically benefit the shareholders of targeted firms, recent studies also suggest that shareholder activism can economically disadvantage nonshareholder stakeholders, notably employees. Our study extends this research by exploring whether shareholder activism by institutional investors (i.e., institutional investor activism) can adversely affect employee health and safety through increased workplace injury and illness. Furthermore, deviating from the assumption that financially motivated institutional investor activists are homogeneous in their goals and preferences, we investigate whether the influence of institutional investor activism on employee health and safety hinges on the political ideology of the shareholder activist and of the board of the targeted firm. Using establishment-level data, we find that institutional investor activism adversely influences workplace injury and illness at targeted firms and that this influence is stronger for nonliberal shareholder activists and for firms with a nonliberal board. Our study contributes to shareholder activism research by highlighting how the political ideology of shareholder activists and boards affects the impact of shareholder activism on stakeholders and how shareholder activism can adversely affect the health and safety of employees. Furthermore, our paper also contributes to research on workplace safety and the management of employee relations and human capital resources by highlighting the detrimental effect of a firm's ownership by investor activists on its employees and how the board's political ideology may enable a firm to reduce this risk. The study aimed to identify and analyze measures used in manufacturing enterprises to protect workers from COVID-19 infection and maintain business continuity. Measures were identified based on literature studies, recommendations presented in the guidelines of international and national organizations, information from manufacturing companies, and the study authors' expertise. Measures were classified into five groups. A survey was conducted using a mixed model Computer Assisted Web Interview/Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CAWI/CATI) on a representative group of 600 manufacturing companies in Poland. Measures were analyzed according to the occurrence or non-occurrence of COVID-19 in the enterprise. It was confirmed that the vast majority of identified measures were being applied, and enterprises implemented other solutions developed in-house. Legal and regulatory measures, individual protective measures, and protective measures for groups of workers were mainly applied at similar levels, both in the occurrence or non-occurrence of COVID-19. The implementation measures of work organization and production organization are mostly higher in enterprises without COVID-19. The proposed approach can be the basis for developing a methodology for studies of crisis events of a similar nature. 'Utilitarian' films - those not for the purposes of art or entertainment - include instructional films addressing workplace safety. Large quantities of these were made in Australia between WW2 and the advent of video and were viewed by many workers in different industries. Their content, social significance and relationship to a wider dispositif of media and labour is therefore a fertile source of information about how work was performed and how it was discursively conceptualised. We can glean information from these films about the presumed class, proclivities, and attitudes that Australian workers were assumed to have. Their address is also gendered, almost exclusively targeting men. In analysing one unusual workplace safety film targeted at women workers, Don't Be Scalped (R.D. Hansen, 1960 Fortune films and the NSW Department of Labour and Industry), aspects of working-class male subjectivity commonly spoken to in workplace safety films are thrown into relief. This article examines how gendered address in industrial safety films constructs and perpetuates gendered inequalities in broader discourses about health, danger and industrial labour. Don't Be Scalped illustrates how gender difference is one way this form of utilitarian text polices and normalises attitudes to safety through targeted and specific forms of subjectification. Objectives Computer workstations are considered a potential workplace hazard. This study sought to evaluate computer workstation ergonomics in a university office environment, and to determine its relationship with musculoskeletal (MS) and visual symptoms reported by employees. Material and Methods This was a cross-sectional observational study. A total of 231 university employees were recruited using a stratified random sampling technique. By means of direct observation, computer workstations were evaluated using the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Ergonomic Computer Workstation Evaluation Checklist. In addition, the participants reported MS and visual symptoms during the past week and 12 months by completing questionnaires. Results Several ergonomic deficiencies in computer workstations were identified. Seating, working area, and keyboard and input devices had the most documented deficits. A significant proportion of employees reported various MS symptoms during the past 12 months. The most affected body parts were the shoulders (37%), the lower back (34%), and the neck (29%). The most prevalent visual symptom was tired eyes (68%). Logistic regression analysis indicated that MS symptoms, such as ache, pain and discomfort, were significantly associated with the total scores on the OSHA components. Deficits in monitor ergonomics and its placement, particularly the presence of glare reflected on the screen, were also associated with reported visual symptoms. Independent variables, such as gender, age, employment duration, job type, daily computer work hours, and work pattern, reliably predicted the participants’ reported experience of various MS and visual symptoms. Conclusions Both MS and visual symptoms are associated with deficits in computer workstation ergonomics. The decreasing trend in the spread of the covid-19 infection has relaxed the restrictions imposed on the community, especially the working people. This working community, whether or not infected by the virus is now slowly turning back to work, along with the impacts of the lockdown. Though there is a decrease in the infection rate, there is always the possibility of infection at the workplace, as some percentage of the vaccinated people are also getting infected. It is absolutely necessary to follow the covid precautionary measures. Hence, it cannot be said that the normal situation has returned. The employer is in a state to manage a crowd comprising post-covid patients, caretakers of covid patients and non-affected groups. The literature works reporting on post covid scenario, precautionary measures to be taken and workplace, benefits of workplace social distancing and sanitation, and medical care needed for workers were reviewed. This paper discusses the post-pandemic workplace scenario, health and safety, sanitation among workers, awareness of precautionary measures and their behavioral changes.

Introduction and purpose: The traditional attitudes toward workplace safety and the common risk analysis methods alone cannot be effective in high-risk industries that are accompanied by socio-technical complexity and high vulnerability since they cause costs and damages in the system. The present study aimed to examine the strengths and weaknesses of traditional safety attitudes in workplaces of high-risk industries. Methods: This study searched the foreign databases of Pubmed, Web of Sciences, Scopus, and Google Scholar, as well as Persian web databases, such as SID, Civilica, and Magiran up to 2020. The keywords used for this search included the term "Tradition" and the keywords of "Safety, Workplace, Risk, Industry, and Accident". A total of 53 articles were extracted. After screening the articles in terms of content and subject matter and deleting irrelevant articles, the full texts of 28 related articles were examined in more detail. Results: In the traditional approach to workplace safety, issues, such as human error and unsafe practices, defects in system components, and inadequate staff training were identified as the root causes of accidents. However, today, many studies have emphasized that the causes of accidents, especially in high-risk industries, should be explored in technological, organizational, and human factors (variability of daily tasks), as well as the combination of a set of emerging events. Conclusion: Weaknesses to detect hidden and/or emerging risks, inadequate effectiveness in dealing with technical complexities-work processes, lack of understanding of nonlinear interactions, and the certainty of causes of the accident include the limitations of the traditional approach to workplace safety in high-risk industries

Background: Construction industry has been ranked among the most dangerous industries worldwide due to the high number of accidents. The safety climate can be considered as a stimulus to reduce unsafe behaviors and thus reduction the accidents. This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the dimensions of the safety climate and unsafe behavior of the construction workers in Tehran, Iran. Methods: The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional research on 90 construction workers. Unsafe behaviors recorded using the American National Standards Institute method and interviews with the workers. The Safety Climate was measured using the UK health care Safety Climate Questionnaire. The descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were used to summarize the findings and the Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to show the relationship between the variables. The SPSS software was used to analyze the data. Results: The mean and standard deviation of safety climate score and unsafe behavior were (3.98+ 0.27) and (45.93 + 17.3), respectively. There was a significant relationship between unsafe behaviors and staff knowledge (r = -0.31 and P = 0.004). We also found relationship between unsafe behavior and safety climate score (r = -0.21 and P = 0.043). Conclusion: The employeeschr('39') knowledge was one of the most important components of workplace safety. Also, this component assigned itself the highest score, and increasing the score in this dimension of the safety climate can lead to reduction unsafe behavior. Finally, according to the results, as the safety climate among employees increases, unsafe behaviors will decrease, and productivity would be increase.

The article considers several modern scientific papers substantiating the need for assessing workplace safety and focusing on methods applied for the quantitative assessment of working conditions. The analysis found unsolved problems in qualimetry, which could lead to the development of new practical and generally applicable methods to effectively assess working conditions. The analysis proved the relevance of the topic and helped to determine the aim of the article, i.e., the development of a methodology for the quantitative assessment of working conditions in industries, considering harmful production factors. An exponential distribution, which belongs to the theory of extreme statistics, was proposed for the transition of heterogeneous single indicators of harmful factors into a dimensionless scale. Affine transformations were used to combine dissimilar scales, making it possible to divide segments on dissimilar scales into equal proportions. The article proposes a step-by-step method for determining a complex indicator of working conditions in industries. The proposed methodology allows management decisions that minimise the deviation in actual values of harmful factors from the optimal ones. The developed technique was tested at one specific metallurgical production site.

Background: Hearing protection devices (HPDs) are often used in the workplace to prevent hearing damage caused by noise. However, a factor that can lead to hearing loss in the workplace is improper HPD fitting, and the previous literature has shown that instructing workers on how to properly insert their HPDs can make a significant difference in the degree of attenuation. Methods: Two studies were completed on a total of 33 Hydro One workers. A FitCheck Solo field attenuation estimation system was used to measure the personal attenuation rating (PAR) before and after providing one-on-one fitting instructions. In addition, external ear canal diameters were measured, and a questionnaire with items related to frequency of use, confidence, and discomfort was administered. Results: Training led to an improvement in HPD attenuation, particularly for participants with poorer PARs before training. The questionnaire results indicated that much HPD discomfort is caused by heat, humidity, and communication difficulties. External ear canal asymmetry did not appear to significantly influence the measured PAR. Conclusion: In accordance with the previous literature, our studies suggest that one-on-one instruction is an effective training method for HPD use. Addressing discomfort issues from heat, humidity, and communication issues could help to improve the use of HPDs in the workplace. Further research into the effects of canal asymmetry on the PAR is needed.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on early childhood educational contexts and on educators’ working conditions. This study aims to examine the change over time in personal contribution to workplace safety and perception of risk of infection among preschool teachers after returning to in-person work during the third wave of the pandemic (spring 2021). Teachers’ perceptions of workplace safety can influence their quality of work-life and, as a consequence, the quality of service offered to children. Data were collected using two questionnaires: at T0 (January) and at T1 (May). The results showed relations between organizational and personal actions to manage risk and fear of infection at work. Concern about COVID-19 contagion decreased over time (t = 5.53, p = 0.000) and perceptions of personal contribution to workplace safety related to COVID-19 improved: t = −2.18 p = 0.031. The decrease in these concerns illustrates how perceptions of ability to manage contagion and protect workplace safety of preschool teachers improved over time, despite the stability of the pandemic context in the first half of 2021. After the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study gives an account of some good practices and their perceived effectiveness in terms of safety for childhood educational contexts.

Introduction: In December 2019, the global outbreak of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) was announced. The pandemic has cast a spotlight like never before on health-care professionals in general, and nurses in particular. Nurses have been dubbed "warriors" by the general public for their determination to provide frontline care to patients with the disease, despite the risk of exposure and a lack of professional resources. The goal of the study was to assess the obstacles and consequences faced by Kerala nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2021 among Kerala nurses. A total of 1630 nurses were chosen using a randomized sampling technique. The data were gathered using a semi-structured self-reported questionnaire. The information was entered into a database and analyzed using SPSS program version 16.0. Results: After analyzing the data, seven themes emerged: (a) love for the profession; (b) frustration for being labeled as "COVID Nurses"; (c) fear of infection and transmission; (d) personal protective equipment uncertainty; (e) workplace safety especially against hospital violence; (f) burnout in nurses; and (g) job stress. Conclusion: Nurses undertook a hazardous rescue mission and played an essential contribution in COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course of intensive work, they underwent significant psychological changes. Nurses burnout and occupational stress must be addressed with effective interventions. In order to mitigate the pandemic, the administration should also promote a healthy workplace and have a positive attitude and harmonious connection with the frontline personnel. We investigate the extent to which transformational leadership behaviours enacted by team members – shared transformational leadership – relate to safety behaviours of team members, teams, and team leaders. We also consider the role of perceived organizational support in moderating the relationships between shared transformational leadership and safety behaviours. We collected data from 2,139 crew members ('team members') and 98 chief engineers ('team leaders') working on merchant shipping vessels ('teams'). Team members' perceptions of shared transformational leadership positively related to team members' safety compliance and safety participation. Shared transformational leadership became less effective in relation to team members' safety compliance under conditions of high levels of perceived organizational support. Shared transformational leadership at the team level related to higher levels of safety participation of teams. Teams' shared transformational leadership was positively related to team leaders' safety participation, but only under low levels of perceived organizational support. Taken together, our findings demonstrate the important role of shared transformational leadership in relation to safety behaviours and suggest that the effectiveness of shared transformational leadership might vary depending on perceived organizational support. Practitioner points: Transformational leadership behaviours exercised by team members – shared transformational leadership – are associated with higher levels of mandated and discretionary safety behaviours of team members.Teams that have higher levels of shared transformational leadership demonstrate higher levels of team‐level discretionary safety behaviours.Shared transformational leadership is more strongly associated with employees' mandated safety behaviours under low levels of perceived organizational support.When leaders perceive low levels of organizational support, their teams' shared transformational leadership becomes a more important correlate of leaders' discretionary safety behaviours.In addition to traditional leadership training that involves formal leaders only, organizations should consider implementing activities that foster shared leadership behaviours. Six Sigma has been applied as a business process improvement strategy in many companies worldwide with great results. On the other hand, workplace safety constitutes a key issue for company managers due to their responsibility. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how using Six Sigma can reduce accidents. A case study is conducted on a large European metallic packaging manufacturing company. As a result, the company presented a reduction of lost time accidents from 97 to 30 that saved a lot of time and cost. The σ value achieved was 4.24. This project shows the effectiveness of Six Sigma as an improvement tool in the human resources area, despite most of the previous Six Sigma research being focused on manufacturing aspects. The notion of linguistic safety is investigated from two perspectives: on the one hand, as the safety of language itself, and on the other – language as an instrument providing social safety. The paper seeks to explore the notions “linguistic safety” and “safety of language” and show the dialectic connection between them; to define the key terms associated with linguistic safety and discuss the main approaches to the concepts under study; to analyse the ways to preserve language and its role as an instrument of ensuring social safety in an urban landscape. The research focuses on such issues as the preservation of the purity and cultural uniqueness of the Russian language; the ability of language to ensure people’s individual psychological and physical safety; its mission in providing information and national security, workplace, technical and aviation safety; as well as the role of linguists, translators and interpreters in all the spheres outlined above. On the basis of the findings, we formulate a number of steps which have to be taken in order to ensure linguistic safety, in particular the regulation of language use in street advertisements, posters and other urban media with the help of professional linguists; careful elaboration of workplace safety instructions; wider use of street signs aimed at the prevention of injuries and providing for people’s physical safety, with special attention to non-native speakers, such as migrants and foreign tourists; measures to improve the English language competence of pilots, controllers and flight attendants in order to take care of aviation safety; more active involvement of linguists, translators and interpreters in the development of a safe urban linguistic environment.
