Moir\'e superlattices of two-dimensional (2D) materials with a small twist angle are thought to exhibit appreciable flexoelectric effect, though unambiguous confirmation of their flexoelectricity is challenging due to artifacts associated with commonly used piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). For example, unexpectedly small phase contrast ($\sim$$8^{\circ}$) between opposite flexoelectric polarizations was reported in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG), though theoretically predicted value is $180^{\circ}$. Here we developed a methodology to extract intrinsic moir\'e flexoelectricity using twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) as a model system, probed by lateral PFM. For small twist angle samples, we found that a vectorial decomposition is essential to recover the small intrinsic flexoelectric response at domain walls from a large background signal. The obtained three-fold symmetry of commensurate domains with significant flexoelectric response at domain walls is fully consistent with our theoretical calculations. Incommensurate domains in tDBG with relatively large twist angles can also be observed by this technique. Our work provides a general strategy for unraveling intrinsic flexoelectricity in van der Waals moir\'e superlattices while providing insights into engineered symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric materials.

New techniques for probing hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPP) in 2D materials will support the development of the emerging technologies in this field. Previous reports have shown that it is possible for WSe2 monolayers in contact with the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) to generate HPP in the hBN via Raman scattering. In this paper, we set out new results on HPP Raman scattering induced in hBN by WSe2 and MoSe2 monolayers including new resonances at which the Raman scattering is enhanced. Analysis of the observed Raman lineshapes demonstrates that Raman scattering allows HPP with wavevectors with magnitudes significantly in excess of 15000 cm-1 to be probed. When monolayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials are stacked into van der Waals structures, interlayer electronic coupling can introduce entirely new properties, as exemplified by recent discoveries of moir\'e bands that host highly correlated electronic states and quantum dot-like interlayer exciton lattices. Here we show the magnetic control of interlayer electronic coupling, as manifested in tunable excitonic transitions, in an A-type antiferromagnetic 2D semiconductor CrSBr. Excitonic transitions in bilayer and above can be drastically changed when the magnetic order is switched from layered antiferromagnetic to the field-induced ferromagnetic state, an effect attributed to the spin-allowed interlayer hybridization of electron and hole orbitals in the latter, as revealed by GW-BSE calculations. The functional form of Coulomb interactions in the transition metal dichalcogenides and other van der Waals solids is critical to many of their unique properties, e.g. strongly-correlated electron states, superconductivity and emergent ferromagnetism. This paper presents measurements of key excitonic energy levels in MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures. These measurements are obtained from resonance Raman experiments on specific Raman peaks only observed at excited states of the excitons. This data is used to validate a model of the Coulomb potential in these structures which predicts the exciton energies to within ~5 meV / 2.5%. This model is used to determine the effect of heterostructure formation on the single-particle band gaps of the layers and will have a wide applicability in designing the next generation of more complex transition metal dichalcogenide structures., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures and an additional 14 pages, 7 figures of supplimentary info. Chromium iodide monolayers, which have different magnetic properties in comparison to the bulk chromium iodide, have been shown to form skyrmionic states in applied electromagnetic fields or in Janus-layer devices. In this work, we demonstrate that spin-canted solutions can be induced into monolayer chromium iodide by select substitution of iodide atoms with isovalent impurities. Several concentrations and spatial configurations of halide substitutional defects are selected to probe the coupling between the local defect-induced geometric distortions and orientation of chromium magnetic moments. This work provides atomic-level insight into how atomically precise strain-engineering can be used to create and control complex magnetic patterns in chromium iodide layers and lays out the foundation for investigating the field- and geometric-dependent magnetic properties in similar two-dimensional materials.

The development of van der Waals (vdW) crystals and their heterostructures has created a fascinating platform for exploring optoelectronic properties in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. With the recent discovery of 2D magnets, the control of the spin degree of freedom can be integrated to realize 2D spin-optoelectronics with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Here, we report spin photovoltaic effects in vdW heterostructures of atomically thin magnet chromium triiodide (CrI3) sandwiched by graphene contacts. In the absence of a magnetic field, the photocurrent displays a distinct dependence on light helicity, which can be tuned by varying the magnetic states and photon energy. Circular polarization-resolved absorption measurements reveal that these observations originate from magnetic-order-coupled and thus helicity-dependent charge-transfer exciton states. The photocurrent displays multiple plateaus as the magnetic field is swept, which are associated with different spin configurations enabled by the layered antiferromagnetism and spin-flip transitions in CrI3. Remarkably, giant photo-magnetocurrent is observed, which tends to infinity for a small applied bias. Our results pave the way to explore emergent photo-spintronics by engineering magnetic vdW heterostructures.

Two-dimensional semiconducting systems, such as quantum wells and transition metal dichalcogenides, are the foundations to investigate low dimensional light-matter interactions. To date, the study of elementary photoexcitation, namely the exciton, in 2D semiconductors with intrinsic magnetic order remains a challenge due to the lack of suitable material platforms. Here, we report an observation of excitons coupled to zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the layered antiferromagnetic insulator NiPS3 using both photoluminescence (PL) and optical reflection spectroscopy. The exciton exhibits a linewidth as narrow as ~350 ueV with near unity linear polarization in the PL spectrum. As the thicknesses of samples is reduced from five layers to bilayers, the PL intensity is drastically suppressed and eventually vanishes in monolayers, consistent with the calculated bandgap being highly indirect for both bilayer and monolayer. We observed strong linear dichroism (LD) over a broad spectra range, which shares the same optical anisotropy axis, being locked to the zigzag direction, as the exciton PL. Both LD and the degree of linear polarization in the exciton PL decrease as the temperature increases and become negligible above the Neel temperature. These observations suggest both optical quantities are probes of the symmetry breaking magnetic order parameter. In addition, a sharp resonance in the LD spectrum is observed with an energy near the exciton PL. There exist over ten exciton-A1g phonon bound states on its high energy side, which likely result from the strong modulation of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer energy by strong electron-lattice interactions. Moir\'e superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures are gaining increasing attention because they offer new opportunities to tailor and explore unique electronic phenomena when stacking 2D materials with small twist angles. Here, we reveal local surface potentials associated with stacking domains in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) moir\'e superlattices. Using a combination of both lateral Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (LPFM) and Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy (SKPM), we distinguish between Bernal (ABAB) and rhombohedral (ABCA) stacked graphene and directly correlate these stacking configurations with local surface potential. We find that the surface potential of the ABCA domains is ~15 mV higher (smaller work function) than that of the ABAB domains. First-principles calculations based on density functional theory further show that the different work functions between ABCA and ABAB domains arise from the stacking dependent electronic structure. We show that, while the moir\'e superlattice visualized by LPFM can change with time, imaging the surface potential distribution via SKPM appears more stable, enabling the mapping of ABAB and ABCA domains without tip-sample contact-induced effects. Physiological computing uses human physiological data as system inputs in real time. It includes, or significantly overlaps with, brain-computer interfaces, affective computing, adaptive automation, health informatics, and physiological signal based biometrics. Physiological computing increases the communication bandwidth from the user to the computer, but is also subject to various types of adversarial attacks, in which the attacker deliberately manipulates the training and/or test examples to hijack the machine learning algorithm output, leading to possible user confusion, frustration, injury, or even death. However, the vulnerability of physiological computing systems has not been paid enough attention to, and there does not exist a comprehensive review on adversarial attacks to them. This paper fills this gap, by providing a systematic review on the main research areas of physiological computing, different types of adversarial attacks and their applications to physiological computing, and the corresponding defense strategies. We hope this review will attract more research interests on the vulnerability of physiological computing systems, and more importantly, defense strategies to make them more secure., Comment: National Science Open, 2022

The monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are an emergent semiconductor platform exhibiting rich excitonic physics with coupled spin-valley degree of freedom and optical addressability. Here, we report a new series of low energy excitonic emission lines in the photoluminescence spectrum of ultraclean monolayer WSe2. These excitonic satellites are composed of three major peaks with energy separations matching known phonons, and appear only with electron doping. They possess homogenous spatial and spectral distribution, strong power saturation, and anomalously long population (> 6 ${\mu}$s) and polarization lifetimes (> 100 ns). Resonant excitation of the free inter- and intra-valley bright trions leads to opposite optical orientation of the satellites, while excitation of the free dark trion resonance suppresses the satellites photoluminescence. Defect-controlled crystal synthesis and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements provide corroboration that these features are dark excitons bound to dilute donors, along with associated phonon replicas. Flat band moir\'e superlattices have recently emerged as unique platforms for investigating the interplay between strong electronic correlations, nontrivial band topology, and multiple isospin 'flavor' symmetries. Twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) is an especially rich system owing to its low crystal symmetry and the tunability of its bandwidth and topology with an external electric field. Here, we find that orbital magnetism is abundant within the correlated phase diagram of tMBG, giving rise to the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in correlated metallic states nearby most odd integer fillings of the flat conduction band, as well as correlated Chern insulator states stabilized in an external magnetic field. The behavior of the states at zero field appears to be inconsistent with simple spin and valley polarization for the specific range of twist angles we investigate, and instead may plausibly result from an intervalley coherent (IVC) state with an order parameter that breaks time reversal symmetry. The application of a magnetic field further tunes the competition between correlated states, in some cases driving first-order topological phase transitions. The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ undergoes a metamagnetic transition in a c-axis magnetic field. It has been predicted that ferromagnetic MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ is an ideal Weyl semimetal with a single pair of Weyl nodes. Here we report measurements of quantum oscillations detected in the field-induced ferromagnetic phase of MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$Te$_{4}$, where Sb substitution tunes the majority carriers from electrons to holes. Single frequency Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations were observed in a wide range of Sb concentrations (0.54 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.21). The evolution of the oscillation frequency and the effective mass shows reasonable agreement with the Weyl semimetal band-structure of ferromagnetic MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ predicted by density functional calculations. Intriguingly, the quantum oscillation frequency shows a strong temperature dependence, indicating that the electronic structure sensitively depends on magnetism.

Two Li-rich candidates, TYC 1338-1410-1 and TYC 2825-596-1, were observed with the new high-resolution echelle spectrograph, LAMOST/HRS. Based on the high-resolution and high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) spectra, we derived stellar parameters and abundances of 14 important elements for the two candidates. The stellar parameters and lithium abundances indicate that they are Li-rich K-type giants, and they have A(Li)$_\mathrm{NLTE}$ of 1.77 and 2.91 dex, respectively. Our analysis suggests that TYC 1338-1410-1 is likely a red giant branch (RGB) star at the bump stage, while TYC 2825-596-1 is most likely a core helium-burning red clump (RC) star. The line profiles of both spectra indicate that the two Li-rich giants are slow rotators and do not show infrared (IR) excess. We conclude that engulfment is not the lithium enrichment mechanism for either star. The enriched lithium of TYC 1338-1410-1 could be created via Cameron-Fowler mechanism, while the lithium excess in TYC 2825-596-1 could be associated with either non-canonical mixing processes or He-flash., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The interplay between band topology and magnetic order plays a key role in quantum states of matter. MnBi2Te4, a van der Waals magnet, has recently emerged as an exciting platform for exploring Chern insulator physics. Its layered antiferromagnetic order was predicted to enable even-odd layer-number dependent topological states, supported by promising edge transport measurements. Furthermore, it becomes a Chern insulator when all spins are aligned by an applied magnetic field. However, the evolution of the bulk electronic structure as the magnetic state is continuously tuned and its dependence on layer number remains unexplored. Here, employing multimodal probes, we establish one-to-one correspondence between bulk electronic structure, magnetic state, topological order, and layer thickness in atomically thin MnBi2Te4 devices. As the magnetic state is tuned through the canted magnetic phase, we observe a band crossing, i.e., the closing and reopening of the bulk bandgap, corresponding to the concurrent topological phase transition. Surprisingly, we find that the even- and odd-layer number devices exhibit a similar topological phase transition coupled to magnetic states, distinct from recent theoretical and experimental reports. Our findings shed new light on the interplay between band topology and magnetic order in this newly discovered topological magnet and validate the band crossing with concurrent measurements of topological invariant in a continuously tuned topological phase transition.

Evidence for the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect has been reported in several experimental systems in the form of approximately quantized edge conductance. However, the most fundamental feature of the QSH effect, spin-momentum locking in the edge channels, has never been demonstrated experimentally. Here, we report clear evidence for spin-momentum locking in the edge channels of monolayer WTe2, thought to be a two-dimensional topological insulator (2D TI). We observe that the edge conductance is controlled by the component of an applied magnetic field perpendicular to a particular axis, which we identify as the spin axis. The axis is the same for all edges, situated in the mirror plane perpendicular to the tungsten chains at 40$\pm$2{\deg} to the layer normal, implying that the spin-orbit coupling is inherited from the bulk band structure. We show that this finding is consistent with theory if the band-edge orbitals are taken to have like parity. We conclude that this parity assignment is correct and that both edge states and bulk bands in monolayer WTe2 share the same simple spin structure. Combined with other known features of the edge states this establishes spin-momentum locking, and therefore that monolayer WTe2 is truly a natural 2D TI.

Hybridisation of electronic bands of two-dimensional materials, assembled into twistronic heterostructures, enables one to tune their optoelectronic properties by selecting conditions for resonant interlayer hybridisation. Resonant interlayer hybridisation qualitatively modifies the excitons in such heterostructures, transforming these optically active modes into superposition states of interlayer and intralayer excitons. For MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures, strong hybridization occurs between the holes in the spin-split valence band of WSe$_2$ and in the top valence band of MoSe$_2$, especially when both are bound to the same electron in the lowest conduction band of WSe$_2$. Here we use resonance Raman scattering to provide direct evidence for the hybridisation of excitons in twistronic MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ structures, by observing scattering of specific excitons by phonons in both WSe$_2$ and MoSe$_2$. Magnetic-domain structure and dynamics play an important role in understanding and controlling the magnetic properties of two-dimensional magnets, which are of interest to both fundamental studies and applications[1-5]. However, the probe methods based on the spin-dependent optical permeability[1,2,6] and electrical conductivity[7-10] can neither provide quantitative information of the magnetization nor achieve nanoscale spatial resolution. These capabilities are essential to image and understand the rich properties of magnetic domains. Here, we employ cryogenic scanning magnetometry using a single-electron spin of a nitrogen-vacancy center in a diamond probe to unambiguously prove the existence of magnetic domains and study their dynamics in atomically thin CrBr$_3$. The high spatial resolution of this technique enables imaging of magnetic domains and allows to resolve domain walls pinned by defects. By controlling the magnetic domain evolution as a function of magnetic field, we find that the pinning effect is a dominant coercivity mechanism with a saturation magnetization of about 26~$\mu_B$/nm$^2$ for bilayer CrBr$_3$. The magnetic-domain structure and pinning-effect dominated domain reversal process are verified by micromagnetic simulation. Our work highlights scanning nitrogen-vacancy center magnetometry as a quantitative probe to explore two-dimensional magnetism at the nanoscale.

Moir\'e structures in van der Waals heterostructures lead to emergent phenomena including superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene and optically accessible strongly-correlated electron states in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers. Dual periodicity moir\'e structures (DPMS) formed in layered structures with more than two layers have been shown to lead to ferromagnetism and multiple secondary Dirac points in TBG. Whilst in principle it is possible to obtain DPMS in bilayers there has not been clear experimental evidence of this yet. In this paper we present signatures of DPMS in a twisted MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ bilayer revealed by resonance Raman spectroscopy. We observed zone-folded acoustic and optical phonon modes with a wavevector twice of the moir\'e wavevector, evidence of a dual periodicity moir\'e heterostructure.
