Background and Aims: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global and complex public health challenge, and dietary management is acknowledged as critical in its prevention. Recent studies have highlighted the involvement of micronutrients in T2D pathophysiology; our study aims to assess the association between B vitamin intake and T2D risks and the mediating role of inflammation. Methods: In a prospective cohort design, data on B vitamins intake, including thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), and cobalamin (B12), was obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and blood inflammatory biomarkers were analyzed according to standard protocol in the local hospitals at baseline from 44,960 adults in the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank (SSACB). Incident T2D cases were identified according to a physician's diagnosis or medication records from the electronic medical information system. We employed logistic and weighted quantile sum regression models to explore the associations of single and combined levels of B vitamins with T2D and mediation analyses to investigate the effects of inflammation. Results: Negative correlations between B vitamins and T2D were observed in the single-exposure models, except for B3. The analyses of joint exposure (B1, B2, B6, B9, and B12) also showed an inverse association (OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.71 to 0.88), with vitamin B6 accounting for 45.58% of the effects. Further mediation analysis indicated a mediating inflammatory impact, accounting for 6.72% of the relationship. Conclusions: Dietary intake of B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B9, B12) was associated with a reduced T2D risk partially mediated by inflammation in Shanghai residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alkenylbenzene skeletons represent one of the most widely occurring structural motifs in pharmaceutical drugs, natural products, and advanced materials. The construction of alkenylbenzenes is promising through the use of a straightforward oxidative alkenylation protocol, particularly from unactivated alkenes. This is significant because unactivated alkenes are inexpensive raw materials that can be obtained in bulk quantities from petrochemical feedstocks and renewable resources. However, controlling the reactivity and regioselectivity of olefination with unbiased olefins remains a significant challenge, necessitating continuous efforts and potentially having a substantial impact on both organic synthesis and the industry. This review aims to provide an overview of the latest advances in regiocontrol strategies for oxidative alkenylation reactions with unactivated alkenes, which can be categorized into three types: 1) ligand‐promoted/accelerated reactions; 2) prefunctionalized olefins‐facilitated reactions; 3) directing group‐induced reactions. The difference effect and hydrogen evolution behavior of pure Mg in alkaline NH4+ containing solutions are systematically investigated. The Mg electrode exhibits a positive difference effect, rather the traditional negative difference effect, with the anomalous hydrogen evolution in the alkaline 0.1 M (NH4)2SO4, 0.1 M NH4HCO3 and 0.05 M (NH4)2CO3 solutions. This is primarily attributed to the corrosion product film dissolution effect of NH4+ and the formation of the black corrosion products. The hydrogen evolution kinetics with the difference effects are deduced and explained by the prevailing incomplete film Mg+ mechanism and enhanced catalytic activity mechanism. This study examined kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward and confidence with implementing integrated STEM education in early childhood classroom settings. Data were collected through a self-report survey completed by 430 kindergarten teachers across China, as well as face-to-face interviews with 14 teachers from six provinces. The results revealed that the participating kindergarten teachers tended to have positive attitudes toward early childhood STEM education. However, the majority of the kindergarten teachers were not confident with implementing STEM education in their classroom settings. Regional differences were evident in the data: Kindergarten teachers from eastern region of China reported a higher level of confidence than teachers from central and western regions. Moreover, kindergarten teachers' years of teaching experience and level of education were not found to be associated with their attitudes toward or confidence with STEM education. This paper concludes with a discussion of the potential challenges for STEM education in Chinese kindergartens based on the findings from this study. Implications and suggestions for future research are proposed.

Complex intermetallics usually exist as second phases in metal alloys. How these second phases can affect the thermal conductivity of alloys is generally unknown because the intrinsic thermal transport properties of these complex intermetallic compounds are quite less explored. In this work, we propose a computational framework based on first-principles calculations to study the electron and phonon thermal transport in complex intermetallics. Two typical intermetallics, i.e., MgZn2 and Mg4Zn7, are studied as prototypes. The rigorous mode-level first-principles calculations are first carried out to study the thermal transport of MgZn2. The calculations not only provide accurate thermal conductivity results, but also allow to prove that the constant relaxation time approximation and the Slack model work quite well in complex intermetallics. Then these two models are combined with first-principles calculations to predict the thermal transport properties for Mg4Zn7. Our results show that the directional average thermal conductivities for MgZn2 and Mg4Zn7 are 53.9 and 21.9 W/mK, significantly smaller than those of their elemental counterparts. Electrons are found to be the main heat carriers in these compounds, leading to a nearly temperature-independent thermal conductivity. Phonon thermal conductivity is negligible due to large unit cells and weak metallic bondings. Our work provides reliable thermal conductivity values for MgZn2 and Mg4Zn7. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to clarify pitfalls and find strategies for the detecting and diagnosing hyperechoic liver metastases (LMs) using Sonazoid-contrast enhanced ultrasonography (Sonazoid-CEUS). METHODS: This study was a prospective self-controlled study. Patients with hepatic lesions suspected as LMs or benign lesions were included in the study. Baseline ultrasonography (BUS) and Sonazoid-CEUS were performed on every patient. Characteristics of LMs and benign nodules were compared by chi-square test and fisher test. Factors influenced the CEUS were demonstrated by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: 54 patients were included in this study. CEUS found additional 75 LMs from 19 patients in Kupffer phase. We found hyperechoic focal liver lesions and deep seated in liver are main confounding factors in CEUS diagnosis. Sensitivity would be improved from 16.67% to 78.57%, negative predictive value (NPV) would be improved from 28.57% to 76.92% and accuracy would be improved from 37.5% to 87.50% when using rapid "wash-in" and "wash-out" as main diagnostic criteria. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperechoic LMs especially deeply seated ones are usually not shown typical "black hole" sign in Kupffer phase. Quickly "wash-in and wash out" shows high accuracy in diagnosing malignant nodules. We highly recommend CEUS as a routing exam to detect and diagnose LMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) may increase the risk for depression. The network perspective focuses on dynamic relationships among individual symptoms, which could advance our understanding of the development of depression during the transition to a diagnosis of CKD. The aim of this study was to use network analysis to examine the longitudinal associations of depressive symptoms from before to after a diagnosis of CKD. Method: The analytic sample included 1,386 participants from the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Participants were aged 45 years or older and reported a doctor's diagnosis of CKD in any wave of interviews between 2011 and 2018. Depressive symptoms were measured by the 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression. Cross-lagged panel network analysis was conducted to examine relationships between symptoms at three time points: prediagnosis; onset of diagnosis, and postdiagnosis). Results: After controlling for other symptoms and covariates, feeling unable to get going and less happiness at prediagnosis were the most predictive of other symptoms at the diagnosis of CKD. Feeling effortful to do everything and depressed mood at the diagnosis of CKD were the most predictive of other symptoms at postdiagnosis. Conclusions: Fatigue (i.e., feeling unable to get going, feeling effortful to do everything), less happiness, and depressed mood were central symptoms during the transition to a diagnosis of CKD. These findings highlight the benefits of identifying and managing these central symptoms to reduce the risk of activating other depressive symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
