151. Learnability of Quantum Neural Networks

Abstract

Quantum neural network (QNN), or equivalently, the parameterized quantum circuit (PQC) with a gradient-based classical optimizer, has been broadly applied to many experimental proposals for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. However, the learning capability of QNN remains largely unknown due to the nonconvex optimization landscape, the measurement error, and the unavoidable gate noise introduced by NISQ machines. In this study, we theoretically explore the learnability of QNN in the view of the trainability and generalization. Particularly, we derive the convergence performance of QNN under the NISQ setting, and identify classes of computationally hard concepts that can be efficiently learned by QNN. Our results demonstrate that large gate noise, few quantum measurements, and deep circuit depth will lead to poor convergence rates of QNN towards the empirical risk minimization. Moreover, we prove that any concept class, which is efficiently learnable by a quantum statistical query (QSQ) learning model, can also be efficiently learned by PQCs. Since the QSQ learning model can tackle certain problems such as parity learning with a runtime speedup, our result suggests that PQCs established on NISQ devices will retain the quantum advantage measured by generalization ability. Our work provides theoretical guidance for developing advanced QNNs and opens up avenues for exploring quantum advantages beyond hybrid quantum-classical learning protocols in the NISQ era.

Abstract

The production of molecular hydrogen by catalyzing water splitting is central to achieving the decarbonization of sustainable fuels and chemical transformations. In this work, a series of structure-making/breaking cations in the electrolyte were investigated as spectator cations in hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER/HOR) in the pH range of 1 to 14, whose kinetics was found to be altered by up to 2 orders of magnitude by these cations. The exchange current density of HER/HOR was shown to increase with greater structure-making tendency of cations in the order of Cs+ < Rb+ < K+ < Na+ < Li+, which was accompanied by decreasing reorganization energy from the Marcus-Hush-Chidsey formalism and increasing reaction entropy. Invoking the Born model of reorganization energy and reaction entropy, the static dielectric constant of the electrolyte at the electrified interface was found to be significantly lower than that of bulk, decreasing with the structure-making tendency of cations at the negatively charged Pt surface. The physical origin of cation-dependent HER/HOR kinetics can be rationalized by an increase in concentration of cations on the negatively charged Pt surface, altering the interfacial water structure and the H-bonding network, which is supported by classical molecular dynamics simulation and surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. This work highlights immense opportunities to control the reaction rates by tuning interfacial structures of cation and solvents.

Bio-based rhamnolipid production from waste streams is gaining momentum nowadays because of increasing market demand, huge range of applications and its economic and environment friendly nature. Rhamnolipid type biosurfactants are produced by microorganisms as secondary metabolites and have been used to reduce surface/interfacial tension between two different phases. Biosurfactants have been reported to be used as an alternative to chemical surfactants. Pseudomonas sp. has been frequently used for production of rhamnolipid. Various wastes can be used in production of rhamnolipid. Rhamnolipids are widely used in various industrial applications. The present review provides information about structure and nature of rhamnolipid, production using different waste materials and scale-up of rhamnolipid production. It also provides comprehensive literature on various industrial applications along with perspectives and challenges in this research area.

163. Development of a deep learning model that predicts critical events of pediatric patients admitted to general wards

Abstract

Abstract Early detection of deteriorating patients is important to prevent life-threatening events and improve clinical outcomes. Efforts have been made to detect or prevent major events such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but previously developed tools are often complicated and time-consuming, rendering them impractical. To overcome this problem, we designed this study to create a deep learning prediction model that predicts critical events with simplified variables. This retrospective observational study included patients under the age of 18 who were admitted to the general ward of a tertiary children’s hospital between 2020 and 2022. A critical event was defined as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, unplanned transfer to the intensive care unit, or mortality. The vital signs measured during hospitalization, their measurement intervals, sex, and age were used to train a critical event prediction model. Age-specific z-scores were used to normalize the variability of the normal range by age. The entire dataset was classified into a training dataset and a test dataset at an 8:2 ratio, and model learning and testing were performed on each dataset. The predictive performance of the developed model showed excellent results, with an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.986 and an area under the precision-recall curve of 0.896. We developed a deep learning model with outstanding predictive power using simplified variables to effectively predict critical events while reducing the workload of medical staff. Nevertheless, because this was a single-center trial, no external validation was carried out, prompting further investigation.

Abstract

Abstract Proper placental development in early pregnancy ensures a positive outcome later on. The developmental relationship between the placenta and embryonic organs, such as the heart, is crucial for a normal pregnancy. However, the mechanism through which the placenta influences the development of embryonic organs remains unclear. Trophoblasts fuse to form multinucleated syncytiotrophoblasts (SynT), which primarily make up the placental materno-fetal interface. We discovered that endogenous progesterone immunomodulatory binding factor 1 (PIBF1) is vital for trophoblast differentiation and fusion into SynT in humans and mice. PIBF1 facilitates communication between SynT and adjacent vascular cells, promoting vascular network development in the primary placenta. This process affected the early development of the embryonic cardiovascular system in mice. Moreover, in vitro experiments showed that PIBF1 promotes the development of cardiovascular characteristics in heart organoids. Our findings show how SynTs organize the barrier and imply their possible roles in supporting embryogenesis, including cardiovascular development. SynT-derived factors and SynT within the placenta may play critical roles in ensuring proper organogenesis of other organs in the embryo.

Abstract Background Hormone receptor‐positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2‐positive (HER2+) breast cancer exhibits considerable heterogeneity, and it is of great interest whether patients with premenopausal HR+/HER2+ breast cancer treated with trastuzumab can benefit from ovarian function suppression (OFS) therapy similarly to HR+/HER2‐ breast cancer. Here, we conducted a real‐world study in this population to identify both who would derive substantial benefits from the addition of OFS and clinicopathological factors with potential prognostic value. Methods Multicenter data from 253 premenopausal patients with HR+/HER2+ early‐stage breast cancer who received trastuzumab from October 2009 to October 2018 were retrospectively included. The Kaplan–Meier method was used for survival analysis, while the log‐rank test was used to compare the survival rates. Univariate and multifactor Cox regression analyses were performed to analyze the independent risk factors affecting invasive disease‐free survival (IDFS). Results After a median follow‐up of 98.50 months, compared with tamoxifen/toremifene alone, tamoxifen/toremifene/aromatase inhibitors plus OFS demonstrated significant benefits in the overall study population (HR = 0.289, 95% CI: 0.100–0.835, p = 0.022, 8‐year IDFS rate: 90.78% vs. 95.54%), especially in the lymph node‐positive subgroup and age ≤40 years subgroup. Age ≤40 years, histological grade >2, lymph node involvement, PR ≤50%, and tamoxifen alone were independent prognostic factors. Conclusions For premenopausal HR+ breast cancer patients, HER2 positivity alone is an indication for the addition of OFS in adjuvant endocrine therapy. Age, histological grade, lymph node status, the expression of PR, and OFS treatment were independent prognostic factors in this population.

Abstract

Sepsis and septic shock remain the leading causes of death in intensive care units. Some patients with sepsis fail to respond to routine treatment and rapidly progress to refractory respiratory and circulatory failure, necessitating extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). However, the role of ECMO in adult patients with sepsis has not been fully established. According to existing studies, ECMO may be a viable salvage therapy in carefully selected adult patients with sepsis. The choice of venovenous, venoarterial, or hybrid ECMO modes is primarily determined by the patient's oxygenation and hemodynamics (distributive shock with preserved cardiac output, septic cardiomyopathy (left, right, or biventricular heart failure), or right ventricular failure caused by acute respiratory distress syndrome). Veno-venous ECMO can be used in patients with sepsis and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome when conventional mechanical ventilation fails, and early application of veno-arterial ECMO in patients with sepsis-induced refractory cardiogenic shock may be critical in improving their chances of survival. When ECMO is indicated, the choice of an appropriate mode and determination of the optimal timing of initiation and weaning are critical, particularly in an experienced ECMO center. Furthermore, some special issues, such as ECMO flow, anticoagulation, and antibiotic therapy, should be noted during the management of ECMO support.

Abstract

Corals have evolved as optimized photon augmentation systems, leading to space-efficient microalgal growth and outstanding photosynthetic quantum efficiencies. Light attenuation due to algal self-shading is a key limiting factor for the upscaling of microalgal cultivation. Coral-inspired light management systems could overcome this limitation and facilitate scalable bioenergy and bioproduct generation. Here, we develop 3D printed bionic corals capable of growing microalgae with high spatial cell densities of up to 109 cells mL-1. The hybrid photosynthetic biomaterials are produced with a 3D bioprinting platform which mimics morphological features of living coral tissue and the underlying skeleton with micron resolution, including their optical and mechanical properties. The programmable synthetic microenvironment thus allows for replicating both structural and functional traits of the coral-algal symbiosis. Our work defines a class of bionic materials that is capable of interacting with living organisms and can be exploited for applied coral reef research and photobioreactor design.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: The influence of specific brain lesions on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is uncertain. We aimed to identify imaging predictors of poor HRQoL in alteplase-treated participants of the alteplase dose arm of the Enhanced Control of Hypertension and Thrombolysis Stroke Study (ENCHANTED). Methods: ENCHANTED was an international trial of low- versus standard-dose intravenous alteplase in AIS patients, with functional outcome (modified Rankin scale [mRS]) and HRQoL on the 5-dimension European Quality of Life Scale (EQ-5D) assessed at 90 days post-randomization. Brain images were analyzed centrally by trained assessors. Multivariable logistic regression was undertaken in the study population randomly divided (2:1) into training (development) and validation (performance) groups, with age (per 10-year increase), ethnicity, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, diabetes mellitus, premorbid function (mRS score 0 or 1), and proxy respondent, forced into all models. Data are presented with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Eight prediction models were developed and validated in 2,526 AIS patients (median age 67.5 years; 38.4% female; 61.7% Asian) with complete brain imaging and 90-day EQ-5D utility score data. The best performance model included acute ischemic changes in the right (OR 1.69, 95% CI: 1.24-2.29) and deep (OR 1.50, 95% CI: 1.03-2.19) middle cerebral artery (MCA) regions. Several background features of brain frailty - atrophy, white matter change, and old infarcts - were significantly associated with adverse physical but not emotional HRQoL domains. Conclusions: In thrombolysed AIS patients, right-sided and deep ischemia within the MCA territory predict poor overall HRQoL, whilst features of old cerebral ischemia are associated with reduced physical HRQoL.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: To determine factors associated with fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) hyperintense arteries (FLAIR-HAs) on magnetic resonance imaging and their prognostic significance in thrombolysis-treated patients with acute ischemic stroke from the ENCHANTED (Enhanced Control of Hypertension and Thrombolysis Stroke Study) trial alteplase-dose arm. Methods: Patients with acute ischemic stroke (N=293) with brain magnetic resonance imaging (FLAIR and diffusion-weighted imaging sequences) scanned <4.5 hours of symptom onset were assessed for location and extent (score) of FLAIR-HAs, infarct volume, large vessel occlusion (LVO), and other ischemic signs. Logistic regression models were used to determine predictors of FLAIR-HAs and the association of FLAIR-HAs with 90-day outcomes: favorable functional outcome (primary; modified Rankin Scale scores, 0-1), other modified Rankin Scale scores, and intracerebral hemorrhage. Results: Prior atrial fibrillation, LVO, large infarct volume, and anterior circulation infarction were independently associated with FLAIR-HAs. The rate of modified Rankin Scale scores 0 to 1 was numerically lower in patients with FLAIR-HAs versus without (69/152 [45.4%] versus 75/131 [57.3%]), as was the subset of LVO (37/93 [39.8%] versus 9/16 [56.3%]), but not in those without LVO (25/36 [69.4%] versus 60/106 [56.6%]). After adjustment for covariables, FLAIR-HAs were independently associated with increased primary outcome (adjusted odds ratio [95% CI]: overall 4.14 [1.63-10.50]; with LVO 4.92 [0.87-27.86]; no LVO 6.16 [1.57-24.14]) despite an increased risk of hemorrhagic infarct (4.77 [1.12-20.26]). Conclusions: FLAIR-HAs are more frequent in acute ischemic stroke with cardioembolic features and indicate potential for a favorable prognosis in thrombolysis-treated patients possibly mediated by LVO. Abstract

High blood cholesterol is typically considered a feature of wealthy western countries1,2. However, dietary and behavioural determinants of blood cholesterol are changing rapidly throughout the world3 and countries are using lipid-lowering medications at varying rates. These changes can have distinct effects on the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, which have different effects on human health4,5. However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-based studies that measured blood lipids in 102.6 million individuals aged 18 years and older to estimate trends from 1980 to 2018 in mean total, non-HDL and HDL cholesterol levels for 200 countries. Globally, there was little change in total or non-HDL cholesterol from 1980 to 2018. This was a net effect of increases in low- and middle-income countries, especially in east and southeast Asia, and decreases in high-income western countries, especially those in northwestern Europe, and in central and eastern Europe. Abstract

This paper focuses on transactive energy management in local energy communities and proposes a coalitional game model which considers the presence and utilization of flexible loads and the power output uncertainties from renewable energy sources. The superadditivity and balancedness of the proposed game model are proved rigorously by demonstrating that a nucleolus-based solution leads to a stable and fair payoff distribution scheme for all players. More specifically, the objective function is proved concave with its analytical expression, derived through an approximated piecewise linear function. The proposed allocation of realized payoffs is then proved to converge consistently to a nucleolus-based solution. It is demonstrated by numerical simulations that the grand coalition effectively increases the global payoff and the proposed allocation scheme contributes to peak shaving and valley filling in the overall load profile.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Self-assessment is an important introspective skill that dental professionals will utilise throughout their professional career. Its value lies in its ability to help individuals identify areas of strengths and weakness, and subsequently seek further development of professional skills where needed. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between self-assessed confidence and the assessment grade of final year dental students based on the professional attributes and competencies of newly qualified dentists outlined by the Australian Dental Council (ADC). METHODS: Ethical approval was obtained prior to distribution of a questionnaire with 45 statements to final year dental students. The survey was created based on the learning outcomes of the ADC guidelines in the domains of "scientific and clinical knowledge" and "patient care." Participants indicated their level of self-assessed confidence by marking "X" on a visual analogue scale (VAS) from zero ("No Confidence") to 10 cm ("Very Confident"). The assessment grade was based on OSCE, viva voce, case report and written paper. RESULTS: A total of 58 (71.6%) dental students participated in the survey. The reported self-assessed confidence over two domains were under "patient care": clinical information gathering 8.92 ± 1.07 cm (range =3.94-10.0 cm: n = 58; 100%), clinical diagnosis and management planning 8.26 ± 1.34 cm (range =0.50-9.95 cm: n = 55; 94.8%), clinical treatment and evaluation, 6.07 ± 1.69 cm (range =0-10.00 cm: n = 55; 94.8%), and "scientific and clinical knowledge": 6.98 ± 1.58 cm (range =0-10.00 cm: n = 58; 100.0%). Within these categories, high confidence was reported for routine dental care (caries management and preventive care) whilst lower confidence was reported for the management of oral medicine and pathologies, dental emergencies, trauma, paediatric dentistry and prosthodontics. Abstract

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella is a cosmopolitan pest that has evolved resistance to all classes of insecticide, and costs the world economy an estimated US $4-5 billion annually. We analyse patterns of variation among 532 P. xylostella genomes, representing a worldwide sample of 114 populations. We find evidence that suggests South America is the geographical area of origin of this species, challenging earlier hypotheses of an Old-World origin. Our analysis indicates that Plutella xylostella has experienced three major expansions across the world, mainly facilitated by European colonization and global trade. We identify genomic signatures of selection in genes related to metabolic and signaling pathways that could be evidence of environmental adaptation. This evolutionary history of P. xylostella provides insights into transoceanic movements that have enabled it to become a worldwide pest.

Abstract

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, is a cosmopolitan pest and the first species to develop field resistance to toxins from the gram-positive bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Although previous work has suggested that mutations of ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily C2 (ABCC2) or C3 (ABCC3) genes can confer Cry1Ac resistance, here we reveal that P. xylostella requires combined mutations in both PxABCC2 and PxABCC3 to achieve high-level Cry1Ac resistance, rather than simply a mutation of either gene. We identified natural mutations of PxABCC2 and PxABCC3 that concurrently occurred in a Cry1Ac-resistant strain (Cry1S1000) of P. xylostella, with a mutation (RA2) causing the mis-splicing of PxABCC2 and another mutation (RA3) leading to the premature termination of PxABCC3. Genetic linkage analysis showed that RA2 and RA3 were tightly linked to Cry1Ac resistance. Introgression of RA2 and RA3 enabled a susceptible strain (G88) of P. xylostella to obtain high resistance to Cry1Ac, confirming that these genes confer resistance. To further support the role of PxABCC2 and PxABCC3 in Cry1Ac resistance, frameshift mutations were introduced into PxABCC2 and PxABCC3 singly and in combination in the G88 strain with CRISPR/Cas9 mediated mutagenesis. Bioassays of CRISPR-based mutant strains, plus genetic complementation tests, demonstrated that the deletion of PxABCC2 or PxABCC3 alone provided < 4-fold tolerance to Cry1Ac, while disruption of both genes together conferred >8,000-fold resistance to Cry1Ac, suggesting the redundant/complementary roles of PxABCC2 and PxABCC3. This work advances our understanding of Bt resistance in P. xylostella by demonstrating mutations within both PxABCC2 and PxABCC3 genes are required for high-level Cry1Ac resistance.

Abstract

Abstract Quantum neural network (QNN), or equivalently, the variational quantum circuits with a gradient-based classical optimizer, has been broadly applied to many experimental proposals for noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices. However, the learning capability of QNN remains largely unknown due to the non-convex optimization landscape, the measurement error, and the unavoidable gate noise introduced by NISQ machines. In this study, we theoretically explore the learnability of QNN from the perspective of the trainability and generalization. Particularly, we derive the convergence performance of QNN under the NISQ setting, and identify classes of computationally hard concepts that can be efficiently learned by QNN. Our results demonstrate that large gate noise, few quantum measurements, and deep circuit depth will lead to poor convergence rates of QNN towards the empirical risk minimization. Moreover, we prove that any concept class, which is efficiently learnable by a restricted quantum statistical query (QSQ) learning model, can also be efficiently learned by QNN. Since the restricted QSQ learning model can tackle certain problems such as parity learning with a runtime speedup, our result suggests that QNN established on NISQ devices will retain the quantum advantage. Our work provides the theoretical guidance for developing advanced QNNs and opens up avenues for exploring quantum advantages using NISQ devices.

189. Quantum circuit architecture search for variational quantum algorithms

Abstract

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are expected to be a path to quantum advantages on noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. However, both empirical and theoretical results exhibit that the deployed ansatz heavily affects the performance of VQAs such that an ansatz with a larger number of quantum gates enables a stronger expressivity, while the accumulated noise may render a poor trainability. To maximally improve the robustness and trainability of VQAs, here we devise a resource and runtime efficient scheme termed quantum architecture search (QAS). In particular, given a learning task, QAS automatically seeks a near-optimal ansatz (i.e., circuit architecture) to balance benefits and side-effects brought by adding more noisy quantum gates to achieve a good performance. We implement QAS on both the numerical simulator and real quantum hardware, via the IBM cloud, to accomplish data classification and quantum chemistry tasks. In the problems studied, numerical and experimental results show that QAS can not only alleviate the influence of quantum noise and barren plateaus, but also outperforms VQAs with pre-selected ansatze.

Abstract

The eligibility of various advanced quantum algorithms will be questioned if they can not guarantee privacy. To fill this knowledge gap, here we devise an efficient quantum differentially private (QDP) Lasso estimator to solve sparse regression tasks. Concretely, given $N$ $d$-dimensional data points with $N\ll d$, we first prove that the optimal classical and quantum non-private Lasso requires $\Omega(N+d)$ and $\Omega(\sqrt{N}+\sqrt{d})$ runtime, respectively. We next prove that the runtime cost of QDP Lasso is \textit{dimension independent}, i.e., $O(N^{5/2})$, which implies that the QDP Lasso can be faster than both the optimal classical and quantum non-private Lasso. Last, we exhibit that the QDP Lasso attains a near-optimal utility bound $\tilde{O}(N^{-2/3})$ with privacy guarantees and discuss the chance to realize it on near-term quantum chips with advantages.

Abstract

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Bioremediation through biotechnological interventions has attracted more attention among researchers in field of environmental pollution control and abatement. Various cutting-edge studies in area of protein engineering and synthetic biology offer a new platform for creation of innovative, advanced biological materials for its beneficial role in environmental pollution mitigation. Biocatalysis especially receives considerable attention as sustainable approach to resource recovery from waste along with elimination of pollutants. This paper focuses on updated developments in engineering of biocatalytic substances which can degrade pollutants of emerging concern. It also explains various classes of biocatalysts, their mechanisms of immobilization, and applications in terms of environmental pollutant remediation. Opportunities and challenges for future research have also been discussed.
