Abstract

Electrochemical valorization of biomass waste (e.g., glycerol) for production of value-added products (such as formic acid) in parallel with hydrogen production holds great potential for developing renewable and clean energy sources. Here, a synergistic effort between theoretical calculations at the atomic level and experiments to predict and validate a promising oxide catalyst for the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) are reported, providing a good example of designing novel, cost-effective, and highly efficient electrocatalysts for producing value-added products at the anode and high-purity hydrogen at the cathode. The predicted CoMoO4 catalyst is experimentally validated as a suitable catalyst for GOR and found to perform best among the investigated metal (Mn, Co, Ni) molybdate counterparts. The potential required to reach 10 mA cm(-2) is 1.105 V at 60 degrees C in an electrolyte of 1.0 m KOH with 0.1 m glycerol, which is 314 mV lower than for oxygen evolution. The GOR reaction pathway and mechanism based on this CoMoO4 catalyst are revealed by high-performance liquid chromatography and in situ Raman analysis. The coupled quantitative analysis indicates that the CoMoO4 catalyst is highly active toward C-C cleavage, thus presenting a high selectivity (92%) and Faradaic efficiency (90%) for formate production.

Abstract

The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to fuels driven by electrocatalysts is a viable strategy for efficient utilization of emitted CO2. CO2RR involves multiple‐steps, including adsorption, activation, hydrogenation, etc. At present, copper‐tin alloy catalysts have shown the capability to reduce CO2 to formic acid or formate. However, their poor adsorption and activation capacities for CO2 molecules, as well as the sluggish kinetics in *H supply restrict the proton‐coupled electron transfer processes in the electrocatalytic CO2RR to produce formic acid. In order to solve the above problems, the ultra‐small SnO2/Cu6Sn5/CuO nanocatalysts with superscalar phase boundaries are fabricated by laser sputtering. The introduction of SnO2 enhances the adsorption and activation of CO2, while CuO promotes H2O decomposition and provides abundant *H intermediates, resulting in tandem catalytic sites on the SnO2/Cu6Sn5/CuO composite catalysts and thus leading to excellent CO2RR activity and high selectivity to formic acid. The Faradic efficiency of formic acid (FEHCOOH) at the SnO2/Cu6Sn5/CuO electrode reaches 90.13% along with a high current density of 25.2 mA cm−2 at −0.95 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. The role of the multiphase boundaries constructed by introduction of oxides is confirmed by in situ infrared spectroscopy and kinetic isotope effects experiments, which is consistent with the design concept. Abstract

Spring thawing can affect the soil carbon and nitrogen cycling processes and lead to changes in the emissions of greenhouse gases. The temporal variations and impact factors of soil GHGs fluxes were measured in Phragmites australis and Carex appendiculata with the static chamber from the end of March to the end of May in 2018 in riparian wetlands of Xilin River, which is typical inland river meandering through steppe region in Inner Mongolia, China. The results showed that soil CH4 and N2O emissions of the P. australis were significantly higher than those of the Carex appendiculata, whereas CO2 emissions were no significant difference. The responses of soil GHG fluxes to soil environmental factors in P. australis and Carex appendiculata differed. In the P. australis community, soil CO2 and CH4 emissions were influenced jointly by mainly the soil temperature and microbial biomass nitrogen, whereas soil N2O emission was mainly affected by the soil temperature. The dominant controlling factor for CO2 and N2O was soil temperature in the Carex appendiculata, whereas CH4 was mainly regulated by soil water content. The global warming potential of P. australis was significantly higher than that of Carex appendiculata. Those findings highlight the difference in soil greenhouse gas fluxes in different plant communities and the importance of CH4 and N2O emissions during the spring thaw, which contributes to predicting the riparian wetland soil greenhouse gases and their global warming potential under global climate changes. Abstract

DT‐13 combined with topotecan (TPT) showed stronger antitumour effects in mice subcutaneous xenograft model compared with their individual effects in our previous research. Here, we further observed the synergistically effect in mice orthotopic xenograft model. Metabolomics analysis showed DT‐13 combined with TPT alleviated metabolic disorders induced by tumour and synergistically inhibited the activity of the aerobic glycolysis‐related enzymes in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistic studies revealed that the combination treatment promoted epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) degradation through non‐muscle myosin IIA (NM IIA)‐induced endocytosis of EGFR, further inhibited the activity of hexokinase II (HK II), and eventually promoted the aerobic glycolysis inhibition activity more efficiently compared with TPT or DT‐13 monotherapy. The combination therapy also inhibited the specific binding of HK II to mitochondria. When using the NM II inhibitor (‐)002Dblebbistatin or MYH‐9 shRNA, the synergistic inhibition effect of DT‐13 and TPT on aerobic glycolysis was eliminated in BGC‐823 cells. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed selective up‐regulation of NM IIA while specific down‐regulation of p‐CREB, EGFR, and HK II by the combination therapy. Collectively, these findings suggested that this regimen has significant clinical implications, warranted further investigation.

Abstract

The construction of a Z‐scheme photocatalytic system is significant in realizing efficient water splitting for hydrogen (H2) evolution. Herein, a novel donor–acceptor covalent organic polymer (COP) is introduced to construct a COP‐ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) heterostructure via in situ condensation reaction. The COP‐ZIS heterostructure with platinum (Pt) as cocatalyst delivers a high hydrogen evolution rate of 5.04 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 16 and 3 times higher than ZIS and Pt/ZIS, respectively. The built‐in field between the highest occupied molecular orbital of COP and the valence band (VB) of ZIS forms a Z‐scheme heterostructure, realizing efficient charge separation. Based on density functional theory calculations, the porphyrin molecule in COP act as electron donor that provides compensating electrons to ZIS. The cocatalyst boosts the utilization of electrons in ZIS. The rate‐limiting steps for H2 evolution with ZIS are overcome by improving charge separation with the Z‐scheme heterostructure and speeding up the reaction with cocatalyst. Therefore, the COP‐ZIS heterostructure with Pt exhibits optimized H2 evolution. Abstract

Glycerol electrolysis affords a green and energetically favorable route for the production of value-added chemicals at the anode and H-2 production in parallel at the cathode. Here, a facile method for trapping Pt nanoparticles at oxygen vacancies of molybdenum oxide (MoOx) nanosheets, yielding a high-performance MoOx/Pt composite electrocatalyst for both the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes, is reported. Combined electrochemical experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the important role of MoOx nanosheets for the adsorption of glycerol molecules in GOR and the dissociation of water molecules in HER, as well as the strong electronic interaction with Pt. The MoOx/Pt composite thus significantly enhances the specific mass activity of Pt and the kinetics for both reactions. With MoOx/Pt electrodes serving as both cathode and anode, two-electrode glycerol electrolysis is achieved at a cell voltage of 0.70 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is 0.90 V less than that required for water electrolysis.

Abstract

Catalysts based on earth-abundant non-noble metals are interesting candidates for alkaline water electrolysis in sustainable hydrogen economies. However, such catalysts often suffer from high overpotential and sluggish kinetics in both the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). In this study, a hybrid catalyst made of iron-doped cobalt phosphide (Fe-CoP) nanowire arrays and Ni(OH)2 nanosheets is introduced that displays strong electronic interactions at the interface, which significantly improves the interfacial reactivity of reactants and/or intermediates with the hybrid catalyst surface. The combined experimental and theoretical study further confirms that the hybrid catalyst promotes the sluggish rate-limiting steps in both the HER and OER. Full water electrolysis is thus enabled to take place at such a low cell voltage as 1.52 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2 along with superior durability and high conversion efficiency.
