Abstract

An exclusive measurement of the dd\rightarrow $^{3}Hen\pi^{0}$ eaction was carried out at a beam momentum of $p_{d}$=1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. Information on the total cross section as well as differential distributions was obtained. The data are described by a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasifree model and a partial wave expansion for the three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be $\sigma _{tot}= \left ( 2.89\pm 0.01_{stat}\pm 0.06_{sys}\pm 0.29_{norm} \right )\mu b$. The contribution of the quasifree processes (with the beam or target neutron being a spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described by a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state.

Abstract

Exclusive measurements of the quasifree $pn\rightarrow pp\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ reaction have been performed by means of pd collisions at $T_{p}$= 1.2 GeV using the wide angle shower apparatus (WASA) detector setup at the cooler synchrotron COSY (Institut für Kernphysik, Jülich). Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $\sqrt{8}=\left ( 2.35-2.46 \right )$ GeV, which includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure. No ABC effect, i.e., low-mass enhancement is found in the $\pi ^{0}\pi ^{-}$ -invariant mass spectrum, in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics that the isovector pion pair can not be in relative s wave. At the upper end of the covered energy region t-channel processes for Roper, $\Delta \left ( 1600 \right )$ and $\Delta \Delta$ excitations provide a reasonable description of the data, but at low energies the measured cross sections are much larger than predicted by such processes. Adding a resonance amplitude for the resonance at m=2.37 GeV with $\Gamma$ =70 MeV and $I\left ( J^{P} \right )=0\left ( 3^{+} \right )$ observed recently in $pn\rightarrow d\pi ^{0}\pi ^{0}$ and $pn\rightarrow d\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$ reactions leads to an agreement with the data also at low energies.

Abstract

Spectra of positively charged kaons in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2007 with a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra were already measured using the same set of data. These new measurements in combination with the published ones are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. In particular, the knowledge of kaon production is crucial for precisely predicting the intrinsic electron neutrino component and the high-energy tail of the T2K beam. The results are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in two intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 20 to 240 mrad. The kaon spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. Using the published pion results and the new kaon data, the K+/π+ ratios are computed. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The reaction pp -> pp pi(0)pi(0) has been investigated at a beam energy of 1.4 GeV using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section is found to be (324 +/- 21(systematic) +/- 58(normalization)) mu b. In order to study the production mechanism, differential kinematic distributions have been evaluated. The differential distributions indicate that both initial state protons are excited into intermediate Delta(1232) resonances, each decaying into a proton and a single pion, thereby producing the pion pair in the final state. No significant contribution of the Roper resonance N*(1440) via its decay into a proton and two pions is found. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

An exclusive measurement of the decay $\eta \rightarrow \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \gamma$ has been performed at the WASA facility at COSY. The $\eta$ mesons were produced in the fusion reaction $pd \rightarrow ^{3}He X$ at a proton beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c. Efficiency corrected differential distributions have been extracted based on 13 960 $\pm$ 140 events after background subtraction. The measured pion angular distribution is consistent with a relative p-wave of the two-pion system, whereas the measured photon energy spectrum was found at variance with the simplest gauge invariant matrix element of $\eta \rightarrow \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \gamma$. A parameterization of the data can be achieved by the additional inclusion of the empirical pion vector form factor multiplied by a first-order polynomial in the squared invariant mass of the $\pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ system.

Abstract

Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the large-acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. These data are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A set of data collected during the first NA61/SHINE run in 2007 with an isotropic graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length was used for the analysis. The measured p+C inelastic and production cross sections are 257.2 ± 1.9 ± 8.9 and 229.3 ± 1.9 ± 9.0 mb, respectively. Inclusive production cross sections for negatively and positively charged pions are presented as functions of laboratory momentum in ten intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 up to 420 mrad. The spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The reaction pp->pppi0pi0 has been investigated at a beam energy of 1.4 GeV using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section is found to be (324 +- 21_systematic +- 58_normalization) mub. In order to to study the production mechanism, differential kinematical distributions have been evaluated. The differential distributions indicate that both initial state protons are excited into intermediate Delta(1232) resonances, each decaying into a proton and a single pion, thereby producing the pion pair in the final state. Abstract

International audience; Collisions of a very heavy nonfusing nuclear system 197Au + 197Au were studied at an energy of 15MeV/ nucleon. An interesting process of violent reseparation of this heavy system into three or four fragments of comparable size was observed. In the case of ternary partitioning, either the projectile-like fragment (PLF) or target-like fragment (TLF) breaks up almost collinearly with the PLF-TLF separation axis. In the case of quaternary reactions, both PLF and TLF were observed breaking up along this direction. By comparison with a dynamical model of deep inelastic collisions it was concluded that the ternary and quaternary reactions occur in semiperipheral collisions, in a range of angular momenta corresponding to about 0.5–0.7 of the maximum L value for grazing collisions. The time elapsing from the scission of the binary PLF + TLF system to the secondary scission of PLF or TLF was estimated to be of about 70–80 fm/c for the ternary reactions and 80–100 fm/c for the quaternary reactions.

Abstract

A quantitative comparison is made between the absolute cross sections associated with statistical and dynamical emission of heavy fragments in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35A MeV beam energy using the multidetector CHIMERA. The result shows that the dynamical process is about twice as probable in the neutron-rich 124Sn+64Ni system as in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron-poor one. This unexpected and significant difference indicates that the reaction mechanism is strongly dependent on the entrance-channel isospin (N/Z) content.

Abstract

Intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted with multiplicity MIMF ≥ 3 at mid-velocity in semi-central reactions induced by 124Sn projectile (35 A.MeV) on 64Ni target have been studied. The results show a clear correlation between the fragment sizes and the corresponding transverse velocities. We interpret this correlation as signature of hierarchy effects in nuclear multifragmentation. A correlation with the fragments isospin contents is also found. Qualitative comparisons with SMF calculations suggests that these correlations are good observables for the symmetry term of the EOS at sub-saturation density.

Abstract

This document presents the revised data taking schedule of NA61 with ion beams. The revision takes into account limitations due to the new LHC schedule as well as final results concerning the physics performance with secondary ion beams. It is proposed to take data with primary Ar and Xe beams in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and to test and use for physics a secondary B beam from primary Pb beam fragmentation in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Lattice QCD calculations locate the QCD critical point at energies accessible at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). We present average transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations, as well as baryon and anti-baryon transverse mass spectra which are expected to be sensitive to effects of the critical point. Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the physical analysis results for the following reactions: 124Sn + 64Ni, 124Sn + 27Al, 124Sn + 58Ni at 35 MeV/A and 25 MeV/A. The main goal of this studies was to find observables sensitive to isospin effects and to present the similarities/differences between the systems characterised by various charge asymmetry factor, defined as I = (N-Z)/A. Theoretical simulations based on the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) model have been performed in order to compare them with the results of the analysis of experimental data. The first phase of the reaction was carried out with the code CHIMERA [1]. The sequential decay of hot fragments was simulated by the code COOLER [2]. The conclusions are as follows: there are observables sensitive to the isospin of the system, such as the Light Charged Particles (LCP) emission and their sensitivity is demonstrated more prominently in the analysis of central collisions at 35 MeV/A. The theoretical calculations do not reproduce these relations well.

Abstract

Expérience au LNS; International audience; A new reaction mechanism of violent reseparation of a heavy nucleus-nucleus system, $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au, into three or four massive fragments in collisions at 15 MeV=nucleon has been observed. After reseparation, the fragments are almost exactly aligned, thus showing a very short time scale of the reseparation process, of about 70–80 fm=c.

Abstract

In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pions was studied using 1.2e5 fully reconstructed events, and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027+/-0.008(stat)+/-0.005(syst). Abstract

International audience; For fragments emitted in the reactions 124Sn + 64Ni and 112Sn + 58Ni at 35 AMeV, isotopic composition and velocity correlations have been studied as a function of the centrality of the collision, using the 4\pi Chimera multidetector. We have investigated the time scale for fragments formation, in order to distinguish between prompt dynamical and sequential statistical emission. Promptly emitted light fragments (Z \leq 9) produced in the mid-rapidity domain are characterised by larger N/Z ratio and stronger angular anisotropies than those produced in sequential statistical emission. Results are compared with stochastic BNV code simulations obtained for primary fragments. Valuable information on the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at sub-saturation densities are obtained.

Abstract

High-precision vector and tensor breakup analyzing powers for the reaction 1H(~d, pp)n at 130 MeV were evaluated for a large phase space region. Results are compared with rigorous theoretical calculations based on realistic nucleon–nucleon potentials as well as on chiral perturbation theory approach. Theoretical predictions generally describe data quite well, only in a few cases influence of three-nucleon forces is significant.
