158. Indecisive effect on weighted voting systems

Abstract

This dissertation studies the impact of indecision on weighted voting systems. A weighted voting system is a decision-making model of voters with unequal powers. To quantify the system performance, system reliability defined as the probability of the system making the correct decision is introduced, which is based on assumptions that the system operates as 2 types of input values (0,1) and 3 types of output values (0,1,x) with 3 types of errors, and voters are unequally weighted and subject to 3 failure-modes (stuck-at-0, stuck-at-1, stuck-at-x). For any weighted voting system, a decision rule is a criterion of how to process the information to generate the final decision. Indecision effect results from one of output values x, where any voter may have no decision on given input values, and it is first considered into the decision rule. To investigate how indecision affects the system performance, this dissertation demonstrates the research in three parts including (1) a threshold weighted voting indecisive system is built, (2) dynamic process on the built system is studied, and (3) a controlled weighted voting indecisive system is generated given unknown inputs. In the first part, a new system is built by considering indecisive effects in the process of decision-making. A generalized threshold weighted voting n-unit indecisive system using a new decision rule consisting of a threshold parameter and a new indecisive parameter is created. The main results imply the high dependence of the system performance from indecisive effect via static parameter initialization, which suggests more research on the indecisive parameter. In the second part, a dynamic process on the indecisive parameter is applied to study system characterization under various situations such as weights change and input types. The results provide a full picture of system performance under the probability distribution of indecisive parameters given different values of threshold and lead the further investigation on prior information of inputs. In the third part, a threshold weighted voting indecisive system with embedded control systems on unknown inputs is designed, where three sub-systems including unknown input observers (UIO), feedforward-feedback controllers (FFC), and the weighted voting system (WVS). To informatize unknown inputs, UIO does the translation of unknown inputs which is used to produce reference inputs in the feedforward controller for disturbances elimination before generating intermediate outputs in WVS, in which, intermediate outputs are monitored in the feedback controller to identify the consistency from reference inputs based on independent final decision criterion. Two major contributions are made from this dissertation including (1) developing a threshold weighted voting system for decision-making when indecision is considered, and (2) developing a fundamental framework on the controlled threshold weighted voting indecisive system when inputs are unknown. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the generated systems, voting methods, and criteria.

Abstract

Loop thermosyphon with multiple evaporators has unique startup features and interaction characteristics between evaporators which are worth studying. In this paper, the startup influencing factors of a loop thermosyphon with multiple evaporators are studied experimentally and visually. Meanwhile, the interaction between evaporators is evaluated quantitatively using a newly defined parameter called interaction ratio, which represents percentage change in temperature divided by percentage change in heating power. The results show that the temperature of evaporators often has a local peak value during the startup, at which moment the boiling becomes fully developed. Also, the effect of filling ratio, heating power value and distribution on the local peak temperature is analyzed. For each evaporator, interaction ratio on itself is always the largest. Among the evaporators, interaction ratios of the evaporator in the middle are the largest because the competition and crowding of its flow with the other evaporators are more intense. With the increase of filling ratio, interaction ratios on itself decrease while interaction ratios on the others increase.

Abstract

• Effects of SMF on four kinds of foods were compared from micro and macro scales. • SMF tended to decrease the ice crystals size for four kinds of fruits and vegetables. • Higher SMF intensity did not always produce smaller ice crystals. • Significant effect of SMF on macro-scale quality only appeared in one kind of food. Novel food freezing technology assisted by static magnetic field (SMF) has emerged in recent years. However, few papers have compared the effects of SMF on different kinds of foods under the same experimental conditions. This study investigated the effects of 0 to 45 mT SMF intensities on apple, peach, cucumber and Indian jujube from micro and macro scales. The parameters including ice crystal size, time through -1 ∼ -5 °C, drip loss and texture were compared. The results show that SMF tended to decrease the ice crystals size for four kinds of fruits and vegetables, and the optimal SMF intensity varied with the types of foods. The beneficial effect of SMF on reducing ice crystal size did not always appear in macro-scale freezing. Positive effects of SMF on macro-scale parameters only appeared in Indian jujube, and stronger intensity brought better quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Integrating evaporative cooling with loop thermosyphon can significantly improve the free cooling ability. In this paper, a loop thermosyphon with evaporative condenser is investigated experimentally. The mist water flow out of a single nozzle is observed and analyzed. The performance and annual free cooling potential of the system are investigated, compared with conventional loop thermosyphon. The results show that the evaporative cooling effect of the locations below the horizontal level of the nozzle is more significant due to gravity. With the increase of horizontal distance from the nozzle, the temperature decreases and then increases and the optimal distance is 200–400 mm. The heat capacity of LTEC increases with the increase of indoor and outdoor temperature difference while it decreases with the increase of humidity. Evaporative cooling can enhance the heat transfer of LTEC by 7%–33% compared with loop thermosyphon with conventional condenser, and this value is larger for smaller indoor and outdoor temperature difference and higher indoor temperature. LTEC can expand the annual free cooling time by 7%–14% compared with LTCC and the effect is more significant in regions with drier weather.

Abstract

Loop thermosyphon with multiple evaporators has tremendous potential in applications that involve multiple heat sources. In this paper, a loop thermosyphon with three evaporators is investigated experimentally. Unique phenomena of startup and oscillation compared with common loop thermosyphons are reported. In the startup process, a unique phenomenon called “sudden temperature change” is found. This phenomenon occurs in a temporary state in the startup, when the temperature differences between the evaporators without heating power and with heating power reach certain range (−2.6 °C to 0.8 °C in this experiment). In the quasi-steady state, an oscillation map which shows the range when oscillation occurs is obtained. Compared with only one evaporator with heating power, simultaneous heating on multiple evaporators reduces the oscillation frequency, enhances the oscillation amplitude and sometimes makes it irregular, due to the interaction between the evaporators. Also, for every two adjacent evaporators, the phases of oscillation are almost opposite.

Abstract

The compressibility of shale matrix reflects the effects of reservoir lithology, material composition, pore structure and tectonic deformation. It is important to understand the factors that influence shale matrix compressibility (SMC) and their effects on pore size distribution (PSD) heterogeneity in order to evaluate the properties of unconventional reservoirs. In this study, the volumes of pores whose diameters were in the range 6–100 nm were corrected for SMC for 17 shale samples from basins in China using high‐pressure mercury intrusion and low‐temperature nitrogen gas adsorption analyses, in order to investigate the factors influencing the SMC values. In addition, the variations in fractal dimensions before and after pore volume correction were determined, using single and multifractal models to explain the effects of SMC on PSD heterogeneity. In this process, the applicability of each fractal model for characterizing PSD heterogeneity was determined using statistical analyses. The Menger and Sierpinski single fractal models, the thermodynamic fractal model and a multi‐fractal model were all used in this study. The results showed the following. The matrix compression restricts the segmentation of the fractal dimension curves for the single fractal Menger and Sierpinski models, which leads to a uniformity of PSD heterogeneity for different pore diameters. However, matrix compression has only a weak influence on the results calculated using a thermodynamic model. The SMC clearly affects the multifractal value variations, showing that the fractal dimension values of shale samples under matrix compression are small. Overall PSD heterogeneity becomes small for pores with diameters below 100 nm and the SMC primarily affects the PSD heterogeneity of higher pore volume areas. The comparison of fractal curves before and after correction and the variance analysis indicate that the thermodynamic model is applicable to quantitatively characterize PSD heterogeneity of shale collected from this sampling area. Abstract

A nuclear war using less than 1% of the current global nuclear arsenal could produce climate change unprecedented in recorded human history and large impacts on agricultural productivity. These e↵ects would be most severe for the first five years after the nuclear war and may last for more than a decade. This paper calculates how the price and availability of food worldwide would change by employing the Environmental Impact and Sustainability Applied General Equilibrium model. It evaluates how results depend on assumptions about how free trade would continue in a post-war economic environment. The results suggest that preserving the world trading system is key to preventing widespread food shortages as a thriving world trading system minimizes the costs born from disruptions to climate. The analysis shows that the regional nuclear war scenario would a↵ect regional food supply systems, especially in high latitude regions. Although the global average impact on wheat is only a few percentage points, the regional nuclear war leads wheat production in EU 28 countries to plumed, on average, by more than 15%. The model also suggests that regional impacts may result in a plausible domino e↵ect with substantial negative ramifications for local food supplies.

Abstract

The sensitive detection of low-dose X-ray radiation is essential to many X-ray applications. In this article, the ultrasensitive X-ray detector based on pure Cs2 AgBiBr6 all-inorganic lead-free perovskite film is successfully demonstrated and encapsulated using a metal casing with a Be window. The high-quality Cs2 AgBiBr6 films are obtained through the low-cost solution process with long electron-hole diffusion length (700 nm) and long carrier lifetime (750 ns). Benefiting from the excellent properties of the Cs2 AgBiBr6 film and the stable ambient provided by the packaging module, the resulting device exhibits attractive X-ray detection capabilities with a minimum detectable dose rate of 145.2 {\mathrm {nGy}}_{air}\text{s}^{-1} and a detection sensitivity up to 1.8\times 10^{4}\,\,\mu {\mathrm {CGy}}_{air}{}^{-1} cm -2 , which is about a thousand times higher than the sensitivity achieved with commercial a-Se X-ray detectors. Besides, the encapsulated device maintains superior detection performance after 2 months of storage, indicating the favorable reliability of the encapsulated device. This article demonstrates a possibility to use Cs2 AgBiBr6 perovskite film and Be window for the sensitive X-ray detection, which will inspire further development of radiation electronics by utilizing all-inorganic lead-free perovskite. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Abstract

Loop thermosyphon with multiple evaporators is an ideal equipment to achieve multi-source heat transfer with low energy consumption. In this paper, the transient response and oscillation characteristics of a loop thermosyphon with dual evaporators under different heating conditions, as well as the internal flow and interaction between the evaporators, are tested experimentally and visually. The results show that when the heating power is uniform, oscillation is more significant under higher heating power, which is due to the conflict and bypass flow between the evaporators; when the heating power of one evaporator is higher, outlet flow of the other evaporator is impeded to some extent and bypass flow from this evaporator to the other exists periodically. As a special case, when only one evaporator has heating power input, this bypass flow remains relatively stable; when the thermosyphon works at steady state, the working state changes smoothly if the heating power changes as step function.

Abstract

Loop thermosyphon with multiple evaporators is a promising device in multi-source heat transfer. The startup performance is very important for its thermal control ability. In this paper, the effect of heating power distribution on the startup of a loop thermosyphon with dual evaporators is investigated experimentally. The startup time and stationarity under different power distributions are analyzed utilizing three parameters: peak time, transition time and temperature (pressure) overshoot. The results show that the startup process is faster and the overshoot of pressure and temperature is larger when the distribution is more uneven; Heating on one evaporator with the same heating power with the other evaporator makes the startup process longer while it makes the overshoot smaller or even disappear; The transition time is approximately twice as much as the peak time when the peak time exists.

Abstract

The increasing energy consumption of data centers has become a global concern. Over 30% of the total energy use in a data center is consumed by the cooling system and it is necessary to reduce this consumption by efficient cooling techniques. Free cooling is an alternative method, which means utilizing natural cold source when the outdoor temperature is lower than the indoor temperature to achieve energy-saving. Thermosyphon and its integrated system have distinct advantages over other free cooling methods and have great application potential. In this paper, the states of the art are reviewed and overviews are presented for thermosyphon and its integrated system, respectively. The features of existing designs are compared and shortcomings of current studies are concluded. This paper will be helpful for researchers in this field and promote the application of this new free cooling method.

Abstract

The immune algorithm (IA) is a prestigious heuristic algorithm based on a model of an artificial immune system, and the IA has shown promising results in the multi-objective optimization field. However, the algorithm's low search ability in high-dimensional space and the clone assignment metric problem must be addressed. Thus, to solve these problems, we propose a rank-based multimodal immune algorithm (RMIA) for many-objective optimization problems. To alleviate the clone assignment metric problem, we design a novel vaccine selection mechanism, which is a rank-based clone selection method. We also propose a dynamic age-based elimination mechanism and a multimodal mutation strategy to address the poor searching ability of the IA in high-dimensional space, where the former is eliminated randomly via roulette in terms of the survival time and the advantages of antibodies in the population, and the latter adopts different mutation strategies based on the different states of antibodies. The proposed algorithm was evaluated and compared to multiple advanced multi-objective optimization immune algorithms (MOIAs) and many-objective optimization evolutionary algorithms (MaOEAs) to demonstrate its superiority.
