We study the kinematics of the M87 jet using the first year data of the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) large program, which has densely monitored the jet at 22 and 43 GHz since 2016. We find that the apparent jet speeds generally increase from $\approx0.3c$ at $\approx0.5$ mas from the jet base to $\approx2.7c$ at $\approx20$ mas, indicating that the jet is accelerated from subluminal to superluminal speeds on these scales. We perform a complementary jet kinematic analysis by using archival Very Long Baseline Array monitoring data observed in $2005-2009$ at 1.7 GHz and find that the jet is moving at relativistic speeds up to $\approx5.8c$ at distances of $200-410$ mas. We combine the two kinematic results and find that the jet is gradually accelerated over a broad distance range that coincides with the jet collimation zone, implying that conversion of Poynting flux to kinetic energy flux takes place. If the jet emission consists of a single streamline, the observed trend of jet acceleration ($\Gamma\propto z^{0.16\pm0.01}$) is relatively slow compared to models of a highly magnetized jet. This indicates that Poynting flux conversion through the differential collimation of poloidal magnetic fields may be less efficient than expected. However, we find a non-negligible dispersion in the observed speeds for a given jet distance, making it difficult to describe the jet velocity field with a single power-law acceleration function. The flat spectrum radio quasar 4C 38.41 showed a significant increase of its radio flux density during the period 2012 March - 2015 August which correlates with gamma-ray flaring activity. Multi-frequency simultaneous VLBI observations were conducted as part of the interferometric monitoring of gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program and supplemented with additional monitoring observations at various bands across the electromagnetic spectrum. The epochs of the maxima for the two largest gamma-ray flares coincide with the ejection of two respective new VLBI components and the evolution of the physical properties seem to be in agreement with the shock-in-jet model. Derived synchrotron self absorption magnetic fields, of the order of 0.1 mG, do not seem to dramatically change during the flares, and are much smaller, by a factor 10,000, than the estimated equipartition magnetic fields, indicating that the source of the flare may be associated with a particle dominated emitting region., Comment: Proceedings for the 14th European VLBI Network Symposium & Users Meeting (EVN 2018) 8-11 October 2018, Granada, Spain

PKS 1510--089 is a bright and active $\gamma$-ray source that showed strong and complex $\gamma$-ray flares in mid-2015 during which the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescopes detected variable very high energy (VHE; photon energies $>$100 GeV) emission. We present long-term multi-frequency radio, optical, and $\gamma$-ray light curves of PKS 1510--089 from 2013 to 2018, and results of an analysis of the jet kinematics and linear polarization using 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array data observed between late 2015 and mid-2017. We find that a strong radio flare trails the $\gamma$-ray flares in 2015, showing an optically thick spectrum at the beginning and becoming optically thin over time. Two laterally separated knots of emission are observed to emerge from the radio core nearly simultaneously during the $\gamma$-ray flares. We detect an edge-brightened linear polarization near the core in the active jet state in 2016, similar to the quiescent jet state in 2008--2013. These observations indicate that the $\gamma$-ray flares may originate from compression of the knots by a standing shock in the core and the jet might consist of multiple complex layers showing time-dependent behavior, rather than of a simple structure of a fast jet spine and a slow jet sheath., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, To appear in ApJ

We present the jet kinematics of the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C +21.35 using time-resolved KaVA very long baseline interferometry array radio maps obtained from September 2014 to July 2016. During two out of three observing campaigns, observations were performed bi-weekly at 22 and 43 GHz quasi-simultaneously. At 22 GHz, we identified three jet components near the core with apparent speeds up to (14.4+/-2.1)c. The timing of the ejection of a new component detected in 2016 is consistent with a gamma-ray flare in November 2014. At 43 GHz, we found four inner jet (<3 mas) components with speeds from (3.5+/-1.4)c to (6.8+/-1.5)c. Jet component speeds tend to be higher with increasing distances from the core. We compared our data with archival Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data from the Boston University (BU) 43 GHz and the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE) 15.4 GHz monitoring programs. Whereas MOJAVE data and our data are in good agreement, jet speeds obtained from the BU Program data in the same time period are about twice as high as the ones we obtain from the KaVA data. The discrepancy at 43 GHz indicates that radio arrays with different angular resolution identify and trace different jet features even when the data are obtained at the same frequency and at the same time. The flux densities of jet components decay exponentially, in agreement with a synchrotron cooling time scale of about 1 year. Using known electron Lorentz factor values (about 9,000), we estimate the magnetic field strength to be around 1-3 micro-Tesla. The KVN(Korean VLBI Network)-style simultaneous multi-frequency receiving mode is demonstrated to be promising for mm-VLBI observations. Recently, other Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) facilities all over the globe start to implement compatible optics systems. Simultaneous dual/multi-frequency VLBI observations at mm wavelengths with international baselines are thus possible. In this paper, we present the results from the first successful simultaneous 22/43 GHz dual-frequency observation with KaVA(KVN and VERA array), including images and astrometric results. Our analysis shows that the newly implemented simultaneous receiving system has brought a significant extension of the coherence time of the 43 GHz visibility phases along the international baselines. The astrometric results obtained with KaVA are consistent with those obtained with the independent analysis of the KVN data. Our results thus confirm the good performance of the simultaneous receiving systems for the non-KVN stations. Emerging wearable sensors have enabled the unprecedented ability to continuously monitor human activities for healthcare purposes. However, with so many ambient sensors collecting different measurements, it becomes important not only to maintain good monitoring accuracy, but also low power consumption to ensure sustainable monitoring. This power-efficient sensing scheme can be achieved by deciding which group of sensors to use at a given time, requiring an accurate characterization of the trade-off between sensor energy usage and the uncertainty in ignoring certain sensor signals while monitoring. To address this challenge in the context of activity monitoring, we have designed an adaptive activity monitoring framework. We first propose a switching Gaussian process to model the observed sensor signals emitting from the underlying activity states. To efficiently compute the Gaussian process model likelihood and quantify the context prediction uncertainty, we propose a block circulant embedding technique and use Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) for inference. By computing the Bayesian loss function tailored to switching Gaussian processes, an adaptive monitoring procedure is developed to select features from available sensors that optimize the trade-off between sensor power consumption and the prediction performance quantified by state prediction entropy. In multi-objective Bayesian optimization and surrogate-based evolutionary algorithms, Expected HyperVolume Improvement (EHVI) is widely used as the acquisition function to guide the search approaching the Pareto front. This paper focuses on the exact calculation of EHVI given a nondominated set, for which the existing exact algorithms are complex and can be inefficient for problems with more than three objectives. Integrating with different decomposition algorithms, we propose a new method for calculating the integral in each decomposed high-dimensional box in constant time. We develop three new exact EHVI calculation algorithms based on three region decomposition methods. The first grid-based algorithm has a complexity of $O(m\cdot n^m)$ with $n$ denoting the size of the nondominated set and $m$ the number of objectives. The Walking Fish Group (WFG)-based algorithm has a worst-case complexity of $O(m\cdot 2^n)$ but has a better average performance. These two can be applied for problems with any $m$. The third CLM-based algorithm is only for $m=3$ and asymptotically optimal with complexity $\Theta(n\log{n})$. Performance comparison results show that all our three algorithms are at least twice faster than the state-of-the-art algorithms with the same decomposition methods. When $m>3$, our WFG-based algorithm can be over $10^2$ faster than the corresponding existing algorithms. Our algorithm is demonstrated in an example involving efficient multi-objective material design with Bayesian optimization.

Radio images of the Galactic Center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), are dominated by interstellar scattering. Previous studies of Sgr A* have adopted an anisotropic Gaussian model for both the intrinsic source and the scattering, and they have extrapolated the scattering using a purely $\lambda^2$ scaling to estimate intrinsic properties. However, physically motivated source and scattering models break all three of these assumptions. They also predict that refractive scattering effects will be significant, which have been ignored in standard model fitting procedures. We analyze radio observations of Sgr A* using a physically motivated scattering model, and we develop a prescription to incorporate refractive scattering uncertainties when model fitting. We show that an anisotropic Gaussian scattering kernel is an excellent approximation for Sgr A* at wavelengths longer than 1cm, with an angular size of $(1.380 \pm 0.013) \lambda_{\rm cm}^2\,{\rm mas}$ along the major axis, $(0.703 \pm 0.013) \lambda_{\rm cm}^2\,{\rm mas}$ along the minor axis, and a position angle of $81.9^\circ \pm 0.2^\circ$. We estimate that the turbulent dissipation scale is at least $600\,{\rm km}$, with tentative support for $r_{\rm in} = 800 \pm 200\,{\rm km}$, suggesting that the ion Larmor radius defines the dissipation scale. We find that the power-law index for density fluctuations in the scattering material is $\beta < 3.47$, shallower than expected for a Kolmogorov spectrum ($\beta=11/3$), and we estimate $\beta = 3.38^{+0.08}_{-0.04}$ in the case of $r_{\rm in} = 800\,{\rm km}$. We find that the intrinsic structure of Sgr A* is nearly isotropic over wavelengths from 1.3mm to 1.3cm, with a size that is roughly proportional to wavelength. Recent Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) light curves indicate an active $\gamma$-ray state spanning about five months from 2016 June to 2016 October in the BL Lac object 1749+096 (OT 081). During this period, we find two notable $\gamma$-ray events: an exceptionally strong outburst followed by a significant enhancement (local peak). In this study, we analyze multi-waveband light curves (radio, optical, X-ray, and $\gamma$-ray) plus very-long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data to investigate the nature of the $\gamma$-ray events. The $\gamma$-ray outburst coincides with flux maxima at longer wavelengths. We find a spectral hardening of the $\gamma$-ray photon index during the $\gamma$-ray outburst. The photon index shows a transition from a softer-when-brighter to a harder-when-brighter trend at around 1.8 $\times$ $10^{-7}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. We see indication that both the $\gamma$-ray outburst and the subsequent enhancement precede the propagation of a polarized knot in a region near the VLBI core. The highest polarized intensity, 230\,mJy, and an electric vector position angle rotation, by $\sim$32$^{\circ}$, are detected about 12 days after the $\gamma$-ray outburst. In this study, a framework for the multi-objective materials discovery based on Bayesian approaches is developed. The capabilities of the framework are demonstrated on an example case related to the discovery of precipitation strengthened NiTi shape memory alloys with up to three desired properties. In the presented case the framework is used to carry out an efficient search of the shape memory alloys with desired properties while minimizing the required number of computational experiments. The developed scheme features a Bayesian optimal experimental design process that operates in a closed loop. A Gaussian process regression model is utilized in the framework to emulate the response and uncertainty of the physical/computational data while the sequential exploration of the materials design space is carried out by using an optimal policy based on the expected hyper-volume improvement acquisition function. This scalar metric provides a measure of the utility of querying the materials design space at different locations, irrespective of the number of objectives in the performed task. The framework is deployed for the determination of the composition and microstructure of precipitation-strengthened NiTi shape memory alloys with desired properties, while the materials response as a function of microstructure is determined through a thermodynamically-consistent micromechanical model.

We study the linear polarization of the radio cores of eight blazars simultaneously at 22, 43, and 86 GHz with observations obtained by the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) in three epochs between late 2016 and early 2017 in the frame of the Plasma-physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (PAGaN) project. We investigate the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of the cores; the RM is expected to increase with observing frequency if core positions depend on frequency due to synchrotron self-absorption. We find a systematic increase of RMs at higher observing frequencies in our targets. The RM--$\nu$ relations follow power-laws with indices distributed around 2, indicating conically expanding outflows serving as Faraday rotating media. Comparing our KVN data with contemporaneous optical polarization data from the Steward Observatory for a few sources, we find indication that the increase of RM with frequency saturates at frequencies of a few hundreds GHz. This suggests that blazar cores are physical structures rather than simple $\tau=1$ surfaces. A single region, e.g. a recollimation shock, might dominate the jet emission downstream of the jet launching region. We detect a sign change in the observed RMs of CTA 102 on a time scale of $\approx$1 month, which might be related to new superluminal components emerging from its core undergoing acceleration/deceleration and/or bending. Multi-frequency simultaneous VLBI observations were conducted as part of the interferometric monitoring of gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program and supplemented with additional radio monitoring observations with the OVRO 40m telescope, the Boston University VLBI program, and the Submillimeter Array. The epochs of the maxima for the two largest gamma-ray flares coincide with the ejection of two respective new VLBI components. Analysis of the spectral energy distribution indicates a higher turnover frequency after the flaring events. The evolution of the flare in the turnover frequency - turnover flux density plane probes the adiabatic losses in agreement with the shock-in-jet model. Derived synchrotron self absorption magnetic fields, of the order of 0.1mG, do not seem to dramatically change during the flares, and are much smaller, by a factor $10^4$, than the estimated equipartition magnetic fields, indicating that the source of the flare may be associated with a particle dominated emitting region., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables.
