160. Petrogenesis of mafic granulite in South Altyn Tagh, NW China: Constraints from petrology, zircon U–Pb chronology, and geochemistry.

Abstract

Mafic granulite, garnet peridotite, and garnet pyroxenite occurred as slices or lenses within dominant felsic granulite, and they together constitute a high‐pressure metamorphic terrane in the Bashiwake unit, South Altyn Tagh, Northern Tibet, China. Previous studies focused on the metamorphic evolution, and geothermobarometry results indicated that the mafic granulite has experienced high pressure/(ultra‐)high temperature (HP/(U)HT) metamorphism, followed by a medium pressure (MP) granulite‐facies overprint. However, the nature and petrogenesis of the mafic granulite in the dominant felsic granulite are poorly known. Combining the previous geothermobarometry results with the petrographic observations, mineral chemistry, and pseudosection modelling in this study, at least four stages were suggested for the metamorphic evolution of the mafic granulites in the South Altyn Tagh, including the eclogite‐facies stage (3–4 GPa, 910–1000°C), high pressure–ultrahigh temperature (HP–UHT) metamorphism, an isothermal decompression, and subsequent MP granulite‐facies overprint. The U–Pb dating of zircons yielded two age clusters: one age cluster at ca. 500 Ma, representing the retrograde age of HP–UHT metamorphism after the eclogite‐facies stage, and another age cluster of ca. 900 Ma that represented the age of the protolith for the mafic granulite. This indicated that the protolith of the mafic granulite was formed in the early Neoproterozoic and then was taken to extreme temperatures and pressures during the early Palaeozoic orogenic event. The elemental abundances of the mafic granulites in the Bashiwake area clearly indicated that they were higher in FeO and TiO2, but were significantly lower in MgO, Cr, and Ni than those of associated garnet peridotites/pyroxenites, and they showed LREE‐enriched patterns with slightly positive Eu anomalies. Sr–Nd isotopic data suggested a basaltic magmatic origin with crust contamination for the protolith of the mafic granulite. Integrating these results together with previous studies, we suggest that the mafic granulites were derived from the basaltic magma intrusion in the continental crust during the Neoproterozoic and subsequently suffered a common HP/UHT metamorphism with felsic crust rocks in the early Palaeozoic (ca. 500 Ma) after the eclogite‐facies metamorphism related to the continental collision (>500 Ma). Abstract

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) as a bioenergy crop, received more and more attention in recent years. However, the yield of castor bean seeds is affected by adverse environmental conditions. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of exogenous application of Paclobutrazol (PBZ) on castor bean growth, yield and physiology as well as on its response to environmental stress during grain filling. In the present field study, three PBZ concentrations [0 g•ha-1 (control), 75 g•ha-1 and 150 g•ha-1] were applied twice, once at grain filling of main panicle and once at grain filling of branched panicle. The growth and physiological responses of castor bean were measured four times throughout flowering and seed formation stages [1-early initiation stage of main inflorescence (E), 2- anthesis of main inflorescence (A), 3-maturity of main panicle (M) and 4-maturity of branched panicle (B)]. Plant growth was not affected by the application of PBZ, but leaves remained later on the plant when 75 g•ha-1 of PBZ was applied. With the application of PBZ, the concentration of starch was higher in panicles than in leaves and stems. Also, PBZ application increased the number of seeds per plant without affecting seed size and weight. These results suggest that exogenous application of PBZ can enhance sink strength of panicles and improve seed yield and that application of PBZ at flower initiation can alter photosynthetic partitioning in favor to seed production. On the other hand, PBZ had no effect on antioxidant enzyme activity in the seeds in response to stress.

173. Abiotic stress responses in crop plants: A multi-scale approach

Abstract

Population stress has compelled the whole world to think about increasing, protecting, and finding ways to develop the best plant species for assured productivity in spite of all environmental odds. In addition to climate change, fluctuations in nature and human activities pose serious environmental degradation, threatening global food security through physical stress in the environment. Significant environmental constraints on agricultural yield worldwide include salt stress, water deficiency stress, nutritional imbalances (including mineral toxicity and deficiencies), and temperature extremes. Abiotic factors, such as agronomic factors, climatic factors, and nutrient availability in the soil, influence crop yield. Plants initiate and develop various possible stress mechanisms for their survival, which can be molecular, cellular and physiological. Abiotic stress has a high impact on crop growth and productivity, either in single forms or in combined forms. For example, drought stress causes a decrease in leaf area, plant height, and crop development. Cold stress reduces plant development and crop efficiency, resulting in productivity loss. Salinity stress not only contributes to water stress in plants, but it can also adversely influence cytosolic metabolism, cell development, membrane function, and increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Higher concentrations of CO2could potentially improve global precipitation, resulting in increased rainfall, which can adversely affect crop development. Crops under excessive water stress have a lower percentage of amylose but a higher crude protein content. This in turn, affects the quality and quantity of crop production by hindering seed germination and causing growth damage due to the combined effects of higher osmotic potential and ion toxicity. In response to abiotic stress, plants evolve a variety of escape-avoidance and tolerance mechanisms, which include physiological adaptation and integrated cellular or molecular responses. Therefore, the main purpose of the current review paper is to investigate the effect of abiotic stress on morpho-physiological, biochemical and molecular activities in various crops. Moreover, we concentrate on crop inter-relativity with abiotic stress to react to and adapt to for survival, which can be a basic roadmap for the selection of species or the development of new tolerant species in the future.

Abstract

Background Information about Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD)-related health resources allocation in China is very limited. The aim of the study was to explore the distribution of COPD-related health resources allocation among different levels public hospitals (PHs) in Hunan Province of central south China. Methods: We randomly collected data from 57 Public Hospitals (PHs) at 3 different levels in Hunan province as well as 893 pulmonary physicians (PPs) who worked there in 2009. Questionnaires based on the recommendations of COPD guideline were designed, including availability of spirometers, inhaled agents for COPD and COPD-related health education for local residents, as well as PPs’ educational levels. Results: Spirometers equipped ratio in 3rd level PHs was much higher than 1st, 2nd PHs. The disparity varied vastly form 0% to 100%. The inhaled agents equipped ratio was 5.56%, 70.85% and 100% respectively for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels PHs. No 1st level PHs launched COPD-related healthcare education for local residents, only 10 of 24 for the 2nd level PHs and 10 of 15 for the 3rd level PHs. PPs of high educational levels concentrate in 3rd levels PHs, however, PPs working in 1st levels PHs and 2nd levels PHs were mainly low and median educational levels PPs’ knowledge of COPD of 3rd levels PHs was much better than of 1st levels PHs and 2nd levels PHs. Conclusion: The extreme imbalance and disparity existed in COPD-related health resources allocation at three levels PHs in central south China. Inequity and insufficient in COPD-related health resources in 1st and 2nd levels PHs should be improved.

Abstract

A systematic method was established for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of characteristic components such as triterpenoids and flavonols in Siraitiae fructus, a famous antidiabetic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). For qualitative analysis, 61 characteristic components were identified using the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with photo-diode array and quadrupole/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-PDA-QTOF-MS/MS) based on a multiple product ions filtering (mPIF) strategy, of which 22 compounds were characterized for the first time from Siraitiae fructus. For quantitative detection, a relative quantitation assay using an extract ion chromatogram (EIC) of the full scan MS experiment was validated and employed to assess the quantity of the 61 identified compounds in 40 batches Siraitiae fructus samples from different sources. Additionally, the principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that 40 samples could be clustered into four groups and the cultivated variety was an important factor for sample classification. The methods used in present study might be also valuable for simultaneous investigation of multiple components from Siraitiae fructus for the purpose of holistic quality control, phytochemistry and metabolic studies. Abstract

Acteoside, isoacteoside, and 2′-acetylacteoside are three representative phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs), which are widely distributed in many plants and also known as the active components of Cistanches Herba . However, the extremely low oral bioavailability of acteoside in rats implies that these structural similar components may go through multiple sequential routes of hydrolysis in gastrointestinal tract before they are absorbed into blood. Therefore, the metabolites of these three components and other PhGs from gastrointestinal tract such as echinacoside, are supposed to be the bioactive elements. In this study, we established an approach combining ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/Q-TOF-MS) with MS E technology and MetaboLynx™ software for the rapid metabolic profiling of acteoside, isoacteoside, and 2′-acetylacteoside by human intestinal bacteria. As a result, 11 metabolites of acteoside, 7 metabolites of isoacteoside, and 11 metabolites of 2′-acetylacteoside were identified respectively. 8 metabolic pathways including deglycosylation, de-rhamnose, de-hydroxytyrosol, de-caffeoyl, deacetylation, reduction, acetylation, and sulfate conjugation were proposed to involve in the generation of these metabolites. Furthermore, we found that the degraded metabolites hydroxytyrosol (HT) and 3-hydroxyphenylpropionic (3-HPP) were transformed from acteoside, isoacteoside, and 2′-acetylacteoside by human intestinal bacteria and demonstrated similar bioactivities to their precursors. These findings are significant for our understanding of the metabolism of PhGs and the proposed metabolic pathways of bioactive components might be crucial for further pharmacokinetic evaluations of Cistanches Herba .
