We present a study on stellar properties of Lyman-alpha (Ly α) emitters at 5 < z < 8.2. We use 247 photometrically selected, lensed, high-redshift, low-luminosity galaxy candidates with spectroscopic follow-up. Of these, 38 are confirmed spectroscopically to be between 5 < z < 8.2 via detection of Ly α. For each galaxy and candidate, we estimate stellar mass, star formation rate, specific star formation rate, and mass-weighted age with spectral energy distribution fitting. We also measure the UV β slope and luminosity using values from photometry. We find no strong correlation between Ly α equivalent width and any of these properties, as well as no significant difference between the physical properties of Ly α emitters and candidates without Ly α detected. This lack of expected trends may be explained by a combination of the evolving opacity of the intergalactic medium at these redshifts as well as the unique phase space probed by our lensed sample. Via tests on other galaxy samples which show varying strengths of correlations, we conclude that if there exist any relationships between Ly α equivalent width and physical properties in the underlying population of faint galaxies, they are weak correlations. We also present the results of a spectroscopic search for C  iii ] emission in confirmed Ly α emitters at z ∼ 7, finding no C  iii ] detections, but putting constraints on strong active galactic nuclei activity and extreme nebular emission. We present a sample of 22 massive galaxies with stellar masses >1010 M⊙ at 3 < z < 4 with deep H and K -band high resolution spectra (R  = 3500–3000) from Keck/MOSFIRE and VLT/KMOS near-infrared spectrographs. We find a large fraction have strong [O  iii ] 5007 and Hβ emission lines with large line widths (σ 100–450 km s−1). We measure the sizes of our galaxies from Hubble Space Telescope images and consider the potential kinematic scaling relations of our sample, and rule out an explanation for these broad lines in terms of galaxy-wide kinematics. Based on consideration of the [O  iii ] 5007/Hβ flux ratios, their location in the mass–excitation diagram, and the derived bolometric luminosities, we conclude that active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their narrow-line regions most likely give rise to this emission. At redshifts 3 < z < 4, we find significantly high AGN fractions in massive galaxies, ranging from 60–70 per cent for the mass range 10 < log (M ⋆/M⊙) < 11, with a lower limit 30 per cent for all galaxies within that redshift range when we apply our most stringent AGN criteria. We also find a considerably lower AGN fraction in massive quiescent galaxies, ranging from 20–30 per cent. These fractions of AGN point to the period between 3 < z < 4 being a time of heightened activity for the development of supermassive black holes in the massive end of the galaxy population and provide evidence for their role in the emergence of the first massive quenched galaxies at this epoch. In this work we used a sample of 20 variable active galactic nuclei at 0.3 < z < 0.8 from the Ultra-VISTA survey to test whether their emission in the near-infrared (NIR) is consistent with emission from the dusty torus or the accretion disc, and whether the radius–luminosity relation found for local sources, is also seen when we consider sources from our sample. We carried out a spectral energy distribution analysis and conclude that 14 of the 20 sources have a variable component dominated by the dusty torus, and four have a variable component dominated by the accretion disc and two sources give uncertain results. Correcting for the disc contamination in the observed-frame Ks band, however, allowed us to determine dust lags for 13 sources after performing cross-correlation analysis. Special care was taken to consider lags that were not biased by seasonal gaps. Our determined lags are systematically found below the radius–luminosity relationship determined for local sources. Following previous works, we introduce an empirical relation that corrects lags by the rest-frame wavelength of the band that samples the dust emission, as shorter wavelengths arise from hotter regions of the torus. When the correction is introduced, our results are consistent with previous findings. We finally discuss whether other intrinsic parameters might also contribute to this effect and how these corrections will impact future large optical and NIR surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce version 2.0 of the shark semi-analytic model of galaxy formation after many improvements to the physics included. The most significant being (i) a model describing the exchange of angular momentum (AM) between the interstellar medium and stars; (ii) a new active galactic nuclei feedback model which has two modes, a wind and a jet mode, with the jet mode tied to the jet energy production; (iii) a model tracking the development of black hole (BH) spins; (iv) more sophisticated modelling of environmental effects on satellite galaxies; and (v) automatic parameter exploration using Particle Swarm Optimization. We focus on two timely research topics: the structural properties of galaxies and the quenching of massive galaxies. For the former, shark v2.0 is capable of producing a more realistic stellar size–mass relation with a plateau marking the transition from disc- to bulge-dominated galaxies, and scaling relations between specific AM and mass that agree well with observations. For the quenching of massive galaxies, shark v2.0 produces massive galaxies that are more quenched than the previous version, reproducing well the observed relations between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, and specific SFR and BH mass at z  = 0. shark v2.0 produces a number density of massive-quiescent galaxies >1 dex higher than the previous version, in good agreement with JWST observations at z ≤ 5; predicts a stellar mass function of passive galaxies in reasonably good agreement with observations at 0.5 < z < 5; and environmental quenching to already be effective at z  = 5. The quasar 3C 286, a well-known calibrator source in radio astronomy, was found to exhibit exceptional multiwavelength properties. Its rich and complex optical emission-line spectrum revealed its narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) nature. Given its strong radio emission, this makes 3C 286 one of the radio-loudest NLS1 galaxies known to date. 3C 286 is also one of very few known compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources detected in the gamma-ray regime. Observations in the X-ray regime, rarely carried out so far, revealed evidence for variability, raising the question whether it is driven by the accretion disk or jet. 3C 286 is also well known for its damped Lyman alpha system from an intervening absorber at z = 0.692, triggering a search for the corresponding X-ray absorption along the line-of-sight. Here, we present new observations in the radio, X-ray, optical, and UV bands. The nature of the X-ray variability is addressed. Spectral evidence suggests that it is primarily driven by the accretion disk (not the jet), and the X-ray spectrum is well fit by a powerlaw plus soft excess model. The radio flux density and polarization remain constant at the Effelsberg telescope resolution, reconfirming the use of 3C 286 as radio calibrator. The amount of reddening/absorption along the line-of-sight intrinsic to 3C 286 is rigorously assessed. None is found, validating the derivation of a high Eddington ratio ( L / L Edd ∼ 1) and of the very high radio-loudness index of 3C 286. Based on the first deep Chandra image of 3C 286, tentative evidence for hard X-ray emission from the SW radio lobe is reported. Hot gas around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) should be captured within the gravitational "sphere of influence", characterized by the Bondi radius. Deep Chandra observations have spatially resolved the Bondi radii of five nearby SMBHs that are believed to be accreting in hot accretion mode. Contrary to earlier hot accretion models that predicted a steep temperature increase within the Bondi radius, none of the resolved temperature profiles exhibit such an increase. The temperature inside the Bondi radius appears to be complex, indicative of a multi-temperature phase of hot gas with a cooler component at about 0.2–0.3 keV. The density profiles within the Bondi regions are shallow, suggesting the presence of strong outflows. These findings might be explained by recent realistic numerical simulations that suggest that large-scale accretion inside the Bondi radius can be chaotic, with cooler gas raining down in some directions and hotter gas outflowing in others. With an angular resolution similar to Chandra and a significantly larger collecting area, AXIS will collect enough photons to map the emerging accretion flow within and around the "sphere of influence" of a large sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). AXIS will reveal transitions in the inflow that ultimately fuels the AGN, as well as outflows that provide feedback to the environment. Sky distributions of large samples of distant active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have shown dipoles significantly larger than the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole. However, a recent Bayesian analysis of the Quaia sample, comprising 1.3 million quasars, has yielded a dipole that seems to be in tandem with the CMB dipole, in contravention of most previous studies of AGN dipoles. Since the question has large cosmological implications, we investigate the Quaia quasar sample afresh, by directly computing the dipole from asymmetries observed in the source number counts. We instead find a dipole 3-4 times as large as the CMB dipole though in the same direction. Further, it has been claimed elsewhere that the difference between the CMB dipole and the radio dipole estimated from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), the first large catalogue that showed an AGN dipole about four times larger than the CMB dipole, can be fully accounted for by incorporating the shot noise and clustering contributions to the total NVSS dipole. A careful reinvestigation of the NVSS dipole, however, shows that the random phenomena like shot noise or clustering cannot account for the actually observed NVSS asymmetries, which show a systematic dipole pattern over the sky. Henize 2–10 is a dwarf galaxy experiencing positive black hole (BH) feedback from a radio-detected low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. Previous Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations detected a H2O "kilomaser" in Henize 2–10, but the low angular resolution (33″) left the location and origin of the maser ambiguous. We present new Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the H2O maser line at 22.23508 GHz in Henize 2–10 with ∼2″ resolution. These observations reveal two maser sources distinct in position and velocity. The first maser source is spatially coincident with the known BH outflow and the region of triggered star formation ∼70 pc to the east. Combined with the broad width of the maser (W 50 ∼ 66 km s−1), this confirms our hypothesis that part of the maser detected with the GBT is produced by the impact of the BH outflow shocking the dense molecular gas along the flow and at the interface of the eastern star-forming region. The second maser source lies to the southeast, far from the central BH, and has a narrow width (W 50 ∼ 8 km s−1), suggesting a star formation–related origin. This work has revealed the nature of the H2O kilomaser in Henize 2–10 and illustrates the first known connection between outflow-driven H2O masers and positive BH feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the study on the relationship between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies using our variability-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) sample (i AB ≤ 25.9 and z ≤ 4.5) constructed from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Ultradeep survey in the COSMOS field. We estimated the black hole (BH) mass (M BH = 105.5−10 M ⊙) based on the single-epoch virial method and the total stellar mass (M star = 1010−12 M ⊙) by separating the AGN component with spectral energy distribution fitting. We found that the redshift evolution of the BH–stellar mass ratio (M BH/ M star) depends on the M BH, which is caused by no significant correlation between M BH and M star. Variable AGNs with massive SMBHs (M BH > 109 M ⊙) at 1.5 < z < 3 show considerably higher BH–stellar mass ratios (> ∼1%) than the BH–bulge ratios (M BH/ M bulge) observed in the local Universe for the same BH range. This implies that there is a typical growth path of massive SMBHs, which is faster than the formation of the bulge component as final products seen in the present day. For the low-mass SMBHs (M BH < 108 M ⊙) at 0.5 < z < 3, on the other hand, variable AGNs show similar BH–stellar mass ratios with the local objects (∼0.1%), but smaller than those observed at z > 4. We interpret that host galaxies harboring less massive SMBHs at intermediate redshift have already acquired sufficient stellar mass, although high- z galaxies are still in the early stage of galaxy formation relative to those at the intermediate/local Universe. In this work, we use 8 years of deep near-infrared imaging to select and study a new set of 601 active galaxies identified through long-term near-infrared (NIR) variability in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). These objects are compared to 710 X-ray bright Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) detected by the Chandra X-ray observatory. We show that infrared variability and X-ray emission select distinct sets of active galaxies, finding only a 37 per cent overlap of galaxies detected by both techniques and confirming NIR-variable AGN to be typically X-ray quiet. Examining the mass functions of the active galaxies shows that NIR variability detects AGN activity in galaxies over a significantly wider range of host stellar mass compared to X-ray detection. For example, at z ∼ 1, variable AGN are identified among approximately 1 per cent of galaxies in a roughly flat distribution above the stellar mass completeness limit (⁠|$\gt 10^{9}\rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), while X-ray detection primarily identifies AGN in galaxies of higher mass (⁠|$\gt 10^{10}\rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠). The stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) is a fundamental relationship between galaxies and their host dark matter haloes. In this study, we examine the scatter in this relation for primary galaxies in the semi-analytic l-galaxies model and two cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, EAGLE (Evolution and Assembly of Galaxies and their Environments) and TNG100-1. We find that in low-mass haloes, more massive galaxies tend to reside in haloes with higher concentration, earlier formation time, greater environmental density, earlier major mergers, and, to have older stellar populations, which is consistent with findings in various studies. Quantitative analysis reveals the varying significance of halo and galaxy properties in determining SHMR scatter across simulations and models. In EAGLE and TNG100-1, halo concentration and formation time primarily influence SHMR scatter for haloes with |$M_{\rm h}\lt 10^{12}{\, \rm M_\odot }$|⁠ , but the influence diminishes at high mass. Baryonic processes play a more significant role in LGal. For haloes with |$M_{\rm h} \lt 10^{11}{\, \rm M_\odot }$| and |$10^{12}{\, \rm M_\odot }\lt M_{\rm h}\lt 10^{13}{\, \rm M_\odot }$|⁠ , the main drivers of scatter are galaxy star formation rate and age. In the |$10^{11.5}{\, \rm M_\odot }\lt M_{\rm h} \lt 10^{12}{\, \rm M_\odot }$| range, halo concentration and formation time are the primary factors. And for haloes with |$M_{\rm h} \gt 10^{13}{\, \rm M_\odot }$|⁠ , supermassive black hole mass becomes more important. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) play an integral role in galaxy formation and evolution by influencing galaxies and their environments through radio jet feedback. Historically, interpreting observations of radio galaxies and quantifying radio jet feedback has been challenging due to degeneracies between their physical parameters. In particular, it is well established that different combinations of jet kinetic power and environment density can yield indistinguishable radio continuum properties, including apparent size and Stokes I luminosity. We present an approach to breaking this degeneracy by probing the line-of-sight environment with Faraday rotation. We study this effect in simulations of three-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic AGN jets in idealized environments with turbulent magnetic fields. We generate synthetic Stokes I emission and Faraday rotation measure (RM) maps, which enable us to distinguish between our simulated sources. We find enhanced RMs near the jet head and lobe edges. We show that increasing the environment density and the average cluster magnetic field strength broadens the distribution of Faraday rotation measure values. We study the depolarization properties of our sources, finding that the hotspot regions depolarize at lower frequencies than the lobes. We quantify the effect of depolarization on the RM distribution, finding that the frequency at which the source is too depolarized to measure the RM distribution accurately is a probe of environmental properties. This technique offers a range of new opportunities for upcoming surveys, including probing radio galaxy environments and determining more accurate estimates of the AGN feedback budget. In this paper we present the publicly available open-source spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code SMART (Spectral energy distributions Markov chain Analysis with Radiative Transfer models). Implementing a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, SMART fits the ultraviolet to millimetre SEDs of galaxies exclusively with radiative transfer models that currently constitute four types of pre-computed libraries, which describe the starburst, active galactic nucleus (AGN) torus, host galaxy, and polar dust components. An important novelty of SMART is that, although it fits SEDs exclusively with radiative transfer models, it takes comparable time to popular energy balance methods to run. Here we describe the key features of SMART and test it by fitting the multiwavelength SEDs of the 42 local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) that constitute the HERschel Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy Survey (HERUS) sample. The Spitzer spectroscopy data of the HERUS ULIRGs are included in the fitting at a spectral resolution, which is matched to that of the radiative transfer models. We also present other results that highlight the performance and versatility of SMART. SMART promises to be a useful tool for studying galaxy evolution in the JWST era. We present a set of controlled hydrodynamical simulations to study the effects of strong galactic outflows on the density and temperature structures, and associated X-ray signatures, of extra-planar and circumgalactic gas. We consider three initial state models, isothermal, isentropic, and rotating cooling-flow, for the hot circumgalactic medium (CGM) into which the outflows are driven. The energy sources are either stellar winds and supernovae, or active galactic nuclei. We consider energy injection rates in the range |$10^{40} \lt \dot{E}_{\rm inj} \lt 10^{44.5}$| erg s−1, and compute the time-dependent soft X-ray (0.5–2 keV) surface brightness. For |$\dot{E}_{\rm inj} \gtrsim 10^{41} {\small --} 10^{42}$| erg s−1, with the exact threshold depending on the initial CGM state, the X-ray response is dominated by dense hot gas in the forward shock that eventually fades into the CGM as a sound wave. The shock surrounds an inner hot bubble leading to a radial flattening of the X-ray surface brightness. For lower energy injection rates, the X-ray surface brightness of the initial CGM state is almost unaffected. We present the results of a high angular resolution (1.1 arcsec) and sensitivity (maximum of ∼0.1 mJy) radio survey at 1–2 GHz in the Galactic Bulge. This complements the X-ray Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey, and investigates the full radio source population in this dense Galactic region. Radio counterparts to sources at other wavelengths can aid in classification, as there are relatively few types of objects that are reasonably detectable in radio at kiloparsec distances, and even fewer that are detected in both X-rays and radio. This survey covers about 3 sq deg of the Galactic Bulge Survey area (spanning the Galactic coordinate range of −3° < l < +3° and +1.6° < b < +2.1°) as a first look into this region of the Galaxy with this combination of frequency, resolution, and sensitivity. Spectral indices within the observed band of 1–2 GHz were calculated for each source to assist in determining its emission mechanism. We find 1617 unique sources in the survey, 25 of which are radio counterparts to X-ray sources, and about 100 of which are steep-spectrum (α ≲ −1.4) point sources that are viable pulsar candidates. Four radio sources are of particular interest: a compact binary; an infrared transient with an inverted radio spectrum; a potential transitional millisecond pulsar candidate; and a very steep spectrum radio source with an X-ray and bright infrared counterpart. Alongside the recent increase in discoveries of tidal disruption events (TDEs) have come an increasing number of ambiguous nuclear transients (ANTs). These ANTs are characterized by hot blackbody-like UV/optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and smooth photometric evolution, often with hard power law-like X-ray emission. ANTs are likely exotic TDEs or smooth flares originating in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). While their emission in the UV/optical and X-ray has been relatively well-explored, their infrared (IR) emission has not been studied in detail. Here, we use the NEOWISE mission and its low-cadence mapping of the entire sky to study mid-IR dust reprocessing echoes of ANTs. We study 19 ANTs, finding significant MIR flares in 18 objects for which we can estimate an IR luminosity and temperature evolution. The dust reprocessing echoes show a wide range in IR luminosities (∼1042–1045 erg s−1) with blackbody temperatures largely consistent with sublimation temperature of graphite grains. Excluding the two sources possibly associated with luminous supernovae (ASASSN-15lh and ASASSN-17jz), the dust covering fractions (f c ) for detected IR flares lie between 0.05 and 0.91, with a mean of f c = 0.29 for all ANTs (including limits) and f c = 0.38 ± 0.04 for detections. These covering fractions are much higher than optically selected TDEs and similar to AGNs. We interpret the high covering fractions in ANT host galaxies as evidence for the presence of a dusty torus. Flows driven by photons have been studied for almost a century, and a quantitative description of the radiative forces on atoms and ions is important for understanding a wide variety of systems with outflows and accretion disks, such as active galactic nuclei (AGN). Quantifying the associated forces is crucial to determining how these outflows enable interactive mechanisms within these environments, such as AGN feedback. The total number of spectral lines in any given ion of the outflow material must be tabulated in order to give a complete characterization of this force. Here, we provide calculations of the dimensionless line force multiplier for AGN environments. For a wide array of representative AGN sources, we explicitly calculate the photoionization balance at the proposed wind-launching region above the accretion disk, compute the strength of the line-driving force on the gas, and revisit and formalize the role of the commonly used ionization parameter ξ in ultimately determining the line-driving force. We perform these computations and analyses for a variety of AGN central source properties, such as black hole mass, initial wind velocity, and number density. We find that, while useful, the ionization parameter provides an incomplete description of the overall ionization state of the outflow material. We use these findings to provide an updated method for calculating the strength of the radiative line-driving using both the X-ray spectral index Γ X and the ionization parameter. We investigate the torus size–luminosity relation of Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on the reverberation-mapping analysis using the light curves of the optical continuum and the IR continuum obtained with the W1 and W2 bands of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer survey. The final sample consists of 446 and 416 AGNs, respectively, for W1- and W2-band light curves, covering a large dynamic range of bolometric luminosity from 1043.4 to 1047.6 erg s−1, which show reliable lag measurements based on our quality assessment analysis. After correcting for the accretion disk contamination in the observed IR flux, we constrain the torus size (R dust) and AGN bolometric luminosity (L bol) relationship with the best-fit slope of 0.39 (0.33) for the W1 (W2) band, which is shallower than expected from the dust radiation equilibrium model. By combining the previous K -band lag measurements, we find that the measured torus size depends on the observed wavelength of the dust radiation, as R dust, K : R dust,W1: R dust,W2 = 1.0:1.5:1.8 (R dust ∝ λ 0.80) at L bol = 1046 erg s−1, confirming a stratified structure of the torus, where wavelength-dependent emissions originate from distinct regions of the torus. By investigating the deviation from the best-fit torus size–luminosity relation, we find a moderate correlation between the offset from the R dust– L bol relation and Eddington ratio. This suggests a possible influence of the Eddington ratio on the observed flattening of the R dust– L bol relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of an investigation of a highly variable C iv broad absorption line (BAL) feature in spectra of the quasar SBS 1408+544 (z = 2.337) that shows a significant shift in velocity over time. This source was observed as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Reverberation Mapping project and the SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper Reverberation Mapping project, and has been included in two previous studies, both of which identified significant variability in a high-velocity C iv BAL on timescales of just a few days in the quasar rest frame. Using ∼130 spectra acquired over 8 yr of spectroscopic monitoring with SDSS, we have determined that this BAL is not only varying in strength, but is also systematically shifting to higher velocities. Using cross-correlation methods, we measure the velocity shifts (and corresponding acceleration) of the BAL over a wide range of timescales, measuring an overall velocity shift of Δ v = − 683 − 84 + 89 km s−1 over the 8 yr monitoring period. This corresponds to an average rest-frame acceleration of a = 1.04 − 0.13 + 0.14 cm s−2, though the magnitude of the acceleration on shorter timescales is not constant throughout. We present the analysis of the stellar population and star formation history of 181 MIRI selected galaxies at z  = 0 − 3.5 in the massive galaxy cluster field SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS0723, using the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). We combine the data with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) catalogue, in conjunction with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR and ACS imaging. We find that the MIRI bands capture PAH features and dust emission, significantly enhancing the accuracy of photometric redshift and measurements of the physical properties of these galaxies. The median photo- z 's of galaxies with MIRI data are found to have a small 0.1 per cent difference from spectroscopic redshifts and reducing the error by 20 per cent. With MIRI data included in SED fits, we find that the measured stellar masses are unchanged, while the star formation rate is slightly lower by 0.1 dex. We also fit the median SED of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies (SFG) separately. MIRI data provides tighter constraints on the AGN contribution, reducing the typical AGN contributions by ∼15 per cent. In addition, we also compare the median SED obtained with and without MIRI, and we find that including MIRI data yields steeper optical and UV slopes, indicating bluer colours, lower dust attenuation, and younger stellar populations. In the future, MIRI/MRS will enhance our understanding by providing more detailed spectral information and allowing for the study of specific emission features and diagnostics associated with AGN. A surprising finding of recent studies is the large number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) associated with moderately massive black holes (⁠|$\rm \log (M_\bullet /M_\odot)\sim 6-8$|⁠), in the first billion years after the big bang (z > 5). In this context, a relevant finding has been the large fraction of candidate dual AGN, both at large separations (several kpc) and in close pairs (less than a kpc), likely in the process of merging. Frequent black hole merging may be a route for black hole growth in the early universe; however, previous findings are still tentative and indirect. We present JWST /NIRSpec-IFU observations of a galaxy at z  = 7.15 in which we find evidence for a |$\rm \log (M_\bullet /M_\odot)\sim 7.7$| accreting black hole, as traced by a broad component of H β emission, associated with the Broad Line Region (BLR) around the black hole. This BLR is offset by 620 pc in projection from the centroid of strong rest-frame optical emission, with a velocity offset of ∼40 km s–1. The latter region is also characterized by (narrow) nebular emission features typical of AGN, hence also likely hosting another accreting black hole, although obscured (Type 2, narrow-line AGN). We exclude that the offset BLR is associated with Supernovae or massive stars, and we interpret these results as two black holes in the process of merging. This finding may be relevant for estimates of the rate and properties of gravitational-wave signals from the early universe that will be detected by future observatories like LISA. The impact of winds and jet-inflated bubbles driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to significantly affect the host galaxy's interstellar medium (ISM) and regulate star formation. To explore this scenario, we perform a suite of hydrodynamic simulations to model the interaction between turbulent star-forming clouds and highly pressurized AGN-driven outflows, focusing on the effects of self-gravity. Our results demonstrate that the cloudlets fragmented by the wind can become gravitationally bound, significantly increasing their survival time. While external pressurization leads to a global collapse of the clouds in cases of weaker winds (⁠|$10^{42}\!-\!10^{43}~{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$|⁠), higher power winds (⁠|$10^{44}\!-\!10^{45}~{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$|⁠) disperse the gas and cause localized collapse of the cloudlets. We also demonstrate that a kinetic energy-dominated wind is more efficient in accelerating and dispersing the gas than a thermal wind with the same power. The interaction can give rise to multiphase outflows with velocities ranging from a few 100 to several 1000  |${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. The mass outflow rates are tightly correlated with the wind power, which we explain by an ablation-based mass-loss model. Moreover, the velocity dispersion and the virial parameter of the cloud material can increase by up to one order of magnitude through the effect of the wind. Even though the wind can suppress or quench star formation for about 1 Myr during the initial interaction, a substantial number of gravitationally bound dense cloudlets manage to shield themselves from the wind's influence and subsequently undergo rapid gravitational collapse, leading to an enhanced star formation rate. Recent studies on dwarf galaxies reveal that some of them harbour a massive black hole (BH), which is believed to have a similar mass of the supermassive BH 'seeds' at early times. The origin and growth of the primitive BHs are still open questions, since these BH seeds are hardly observed at high redshifts. Therefore, MBH of dwarf galaxies can be the perfect candidates to untangle BH 'seeds' properties and their influence on their host galaxy evolution, since MBH may preserve their initial conditions due to its quiet merger and accretion histories. We use optical integral field unit observations, obtained with the Gemini GMOS-IFU, to study the gas emission and kinematics in four dwarf galaxies, candidates to host MBH, based on the analysis of their [Fe  x ] luminosities measured from SDSS spectra. The [Fe  x ] emission line is not detected in our GMOS in any of the galaxies, prompting speculation that its absence in our recent data may stem from a past tidal disruption event coinciding with the observation period of the SDSS data. All galaxies exhibit extended gas emissions, and the spatially resolved emission-line ratio diagnostic diagrams present values that suggest active galactic nuclei (AGN) photoionization from the [S  ii ]–BPT diagram. The gas velocity fields of all galaxies are indicative of disturbed rotation patterns, with no detection of gas outflows in any of the sources. Spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting is one of the most commonly used techniques to study the dust properties in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Works implementing this technique commonly use radiative transfer models that assume a variety of dust properties. Despite the key role of this aspect, limited effort has been put forward to explore the chemical composition, the role of different optical properties, and the grain size distribution of dust, all of which can have a substantial impact on the theoretical radiative transfer calculations. In this work, we explore the role of the dust chemical composition in the AGN dusty torus through SED fitting to Spitzer /IRS spectra of a sample of 49 nearby AGN with silicate features in emission. We implement a mineralogy model including the popular astronomical silicates and a set of oxides and amorphous silicates with different grain sizes. Wefind that best fits use principally porous alumina, periclase, and olivine. In terms of mass fractions, |$\sim 99~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the dust is composed of dust grains of size |$\rm {0.1 \, \mu m}$|⁠ , with a |$\lt 1~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| contribution from |$\rm {3 \, \mu m}$| grains. Moreover, the astronomical silicates have a very low occurrence in the best fits, suggesting that they are not the most suited dust species to reproduce the silicate features in our sample. We derive the ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function (LF) of star-forming galaxies in the redshift range z  = 0.6–1.2, in the rest-frame far-UV (1500 Å) wavelength. For this work, we are in particular interested in the bright end of the UV LF in this redshift range. Data from the XMM–Newton Optical Monitor (XMM-OM), near-UV (2410–3565 Å) observations over 1.5 deg2 of the Cosmic evolution survey (COSMOS) field are employed for this purpose. We compile a source list of 879 sources with UVW 1AB in the range ∼21–24 mag from the wide-area UVW 1 image of the COSMOS field in the two bins 0.6 ≤ z ≤ 0.8 and 0.8 ≤ z ≤ 1.2. The M 1500 for these sources lies in the interval [ − 19.10, −22.50]. We use the maximum likelihood to fit a Schechter function model to the unbinned data to estimate the parameters (faint-end slope, characteristic magnitude, and normalization) of the Schechter function. We find the shape of the LF to be consistent with the Schechter model, and the parameters are in fair agreement with other studies conducted using direct measurements of the 1500 Å flux. We see a brightening of the characteristic magnitude as we move from lower (0.7) to higher (1.0) redshift. The measures for luminosity density are within the error margins of past studies. We examine the brightest sources in our sample for the active galactic nucleus contribution. These sources are characterized by their spectral energy distributions, integrated infrared (IR) luminosities, and morphologies. We present a model of radio continuum emission associated with star formation (SF) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) implemented in the Shark semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. SF emission includes free-free and synchrotron emission, which depend on the free-electron density and the rate of core-collapse supernovae with a minor contribution from supernova remnants, respectively. AGN emission is modelled based on the jet production rate, which depends on the black hole mass, accretion rate, and spin, and includes synchrotron self-absorption. Shark reproduces radio luminosity functions (RLFs) at |$1.4\, \rm GHz$| and |$150\, \rm MHz$| for 0 ≤ z ≤ 4, and scaling relations between radio luminosity, star formation rate, and infrared luminosity of galaxies in the local and distant universe in good agreement with observations. The model also reproduces observed number counts of radio sources from 150 MHz to 8.4 GHz to within a factor of 2 on average, though larger discrepancies are seen at the very bright fluxes at higher frequencies. We use this model to understand how the radio continuum emission from radio-quiet AGNs can affect the measured RLFs of galaxies. We find current methods to exclude AGNs from observational samples result in large fractions of radio-quiet AGNs contaminating the 'star-forming galaxies' selection and a brighter end to the resulting RLFs.We investigate how this affects the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) and show that AGN contamination can lead to evolution of the IRRC with redshift. Without this contamination, our model predicts a redshift- and stellar mass-independent IRRC, except at the dwarf-galaxy regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting has been extensively used to determine the nature of the faint radio source population. Recent efforts have combined fits from multiple SED-fitting codes to account for the host galaxy and any active nucleus that may be present. We show that it is possible to produce similar-quality classifications using a single energy-balance SED fitting code, prospector , to model up to 26 bands of UV–far-infrared aperture-matched photometry for ∼31 000 sources in the ELAIS-N1 field from the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) deep fields first data release. One of a new generation of SED-fitting codes, prospector accounts for potential contributions from radiative active galactic nuclei (AGN) when estimating galaxy properties, including star formation rates (SFRs) derived using non-parametric star formation histories. Combining this information with radio luminosities, we classify 92 per cent of the radio sources as a star-forming galaxy, high-/low-excitation radio galaxy, or radio-quiet AGN and study the population demographics as a function of 150 MHz flux density, luminosity, SFR, stellar mass, redshift, and apparent r -band magnitude. Finally, we use prospector SED fits to investigate the SFR–150 MHz luminosity relation for a sample of ∼133 000 3.6 μm-selected z < 1 sources, finding that the stellar mass dependence is significantly weaker than previously reported, and may disappear altogether at |$\log _{10} (\mathrm{SFR}/M_\odot \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}) \gt 0.5$|⁠. This approach makes it significantly easier to classify radio sources from LoTSS and elsewhere, and may have important implications for future studies of star-forming galaxies at radio wavelengths. Radiative cooling and active galactic nucleus heating are thought to form a feedback loop that regulates the evolution of low-redshift cool-core galaxy clusters. Numerical simulations suggest that the formation of multiphase gas in the cluster core imposes a floor on the ratio of cooling time (t cool) to free-fall time (t ff) at min(t cool/ t ff) ≈ 10. Observations of galaxy clusters show evidence for such a floor, and usually the cluster cores with min(t cool/ t ff) ≲ 30 contain abundant multiphase gas. However, there are important outliers. One of them is Abell 2029 (A2029), a massive galaxy cluster (M 200 ≳ 1015 M⊙) with min(t cool/ t ff) ∼ 20, but little apparent multiphase gas. In this paper, we present high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic adaptive mesh refinement simulations of a cluster similar to A2029 and study how it evolves over a period of 1–2 Gyr. Those simulations suggest that A2029 self-regulates without producing multiphase gas because the mass of its central black hole (⁠|${\sim} 5 \times 10^{10} \, \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) is great enough for Bondi accretion of hot ambient gas to produce enough feedback energy to compensate for radiative cooling. Near-infrared long-slit spectroscopy has been used to study the stellar population (SP) of the low luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and matched analogues (LLAMA) sample. To perform the SP fits we have employed the X-shooter simple stellar population models together with the starlight code. Our main conclusions are: The star formation history of the AGNs is very complex, presenting many episodes of star formation during their lifetimes. In general, AGN hosts have higher fractions of intermediate-age SP (light-weighted mean ages, < t > L ≲ 4.5 Gyr) when compared with their analogues (< t > L ≲ 8.0 Gyr). AGNs are more affected by reddening and require significant fractions of featureless continuum and hot dust components. The ratio between the AGN radiated energy and the gravitational potential energy of the molecular gas (E Rad/ E PG) for the AGN is compared with the < t > L and a possible anticorrelation is observed. This suggests that the AGN is affecting the star formation in these galaxies, in the sense that more energetic AGN [log(E Rad/ E PG) ≳ 3] tend to host nuclear younger SP (< t > L ≲4 Gyr). We found that the recent (t <2 Gyr) returned (recycled) stellar mass is higher in AGN than in the controls. We also provide evidence that the mass-loss of stars would be enough to feed the AGN, thus providing observational constraints for models that predict that AGN feeding is partially due to the recycled gas from dying stars. With an aim to unveil the population of obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosted in high- z dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs), we performed X-ray spectral study of 34 DOGs (0.59 ≤ z ≤ 4.65) lying within 5.3 square degrees of the XMM- Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) coverage in the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field. To improve the spectral quality of individual sources, we combined all the existing XMM−Newton data and also included Chandra /Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) data, whenever available. We find that the X-ray spectra of our DOGs can be fitted with a simple absorbed power law or with a physically motivated borus02 model. The line-of-sight column densities (N H) in our sources span across a wide range (1.02 × 1022 cm−2 ≤ N H ≤ 1.21 × 1024 cm−2), with a substantial fraction (∼17.6 per cent) of them being heavily obscured (N H ≥ 1023 cm−2). We also identified one new Compton-thick (CT)-AGN candidate, yielding the CT-AGN fraction in our sample to be only 3 per cent. The absorption-corrected 2.0–10 keV X-ray luminosities of our sources (2.00 × 1043 erg s−1 ≤ |$L_{\rm 2-10~keV}^{\rm int}$| ≤ 6.17 ×  1045 erg s−1) suggest them to be luminous quasars. The N H versus Eddington ratio diagnostic plot infers that our sample consists of a heterogeneous population that includes a small fraction (∼12 per cent) of DOGs belonging to an early phase (Hot DOGs) during which accretion and obscuration peaks, while the remaining DOGs belong to an intermediate or late phase during which radiative feedback from the dominant AGN blows away surrounding obscuring material. Star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies are affected by a variety of factors, both external (field versus cluster/group) and internal [presence of a bar and active galactic nucleus (AGN), morphological type]. In this work, we extend our previous study and apply the |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$|  metric to a sample of 11 nearby galaxies with Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations. Based on a combination of H α and ultraviolet photometry, |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$| is sensitive to star formation time-scales of ∼5–200 Myr and therefore measures the present-day rate of change in the star formation rate (SFR), dSFR/d t. Within this limited galaxy sample, we do not observe systematic variations between the global value of |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$| and the presence of an AGN, stellar bar, or group or cluster membership. Within some of the individual galaxies, we, however, observe significant differences in |$\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$| between the arm and interarm regions. In half of the galaxies, the recent SFH of both arm and interarm regions has been very similar. However, in the galaxies with higher bulge-to-total light ratios and earlier morphological type, the SFR is declining more rapidly in the interarm regions. This decline in SFR is not a result of low molecular gas surface density or a decrease in the star formation efficiency, implying that other factors are responsible for this SFR decrease. We present a pan-chromatic study of AT2017bcc, a nuclear transient that was discovered in 2017 within the skymap of a reported burst-like gravitational-wave candidate, G274296. It was initially classified as a superluminous supernova, and then reclassified as a candidate tidal disruption event. Its optical light curve has since shown ongoing variability with a structure function consistent with that of an active galactic nucleus, however, earlier data show no variability for at least 10 yr prior to the outburst in 2017. The spectrum shows complex profiles in the broad Balmer lines: a central component with a broad-blue wing, and a boxy component with time-variable blue and red shoulders. The H α emission profile is well modelled using a circular accretion disc component, and a blue-shifted double Gaussian which may indicate a partially obscured outflow. Weak narrow lines, together with the previously flat light curve, suggest that this object represents a dormant galactic nucleus which has recently been re-activated. Our time-series modelling of the Balmer lines suggests that this is connected to a disturbance in the disc morphology, and we speculate this could involve a sudden violent event such as a tidal disruption event involving the central supermassive black hole, though this cannot be confirmed, and given an estimated black hole mass of ≳ 107–108 M⊙ instabilities in an existing disc may be more likely. Although we find that the redshifts of AT2017bcc (z  = 0.13) and G274296 (z > 0.42) are inconsistent, this event adds to the growing diversity of both nuclear transients and multimessenger contaminants. A fundamental goal of modern-day astrophysics is to understand the connection between supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and galaxy evolution. Merging galaxies offer one of the most dramatic channels for galaxy evolution known, capable of driving inflows of gas into galactic nuclei, potentially fueling both star formation and central SMBH activity. Dual active galactic nuclei (dual AGNs) in late-stage mergers with nuclear pair separations <10 kpc are thus ideal candidates to study SMBH growth along the merger sequence since they coincide with the most transformative period for galaxies. However, dual AGNs can be extremely difficult to confirm and study. Hard X-ray (>10 keV) studies offer a relatively contamination-free tool for probing the dense obscuring environments predicted to surround the majority of dual AGN in late-stage mergers. To date, only a handful of the brightest and closest systems have been studied at these energies due to the demanding instrumental requirements involved. We demonstrate the unique capabilities of HEX-P to spatially resolve the soft and -- for the first time -- hard X-ray counterparts of closely-separated (~2" -- 5") dual AGNs in the local Universe. By incorporating physically-motivated obscuration models, we reproduce realistic broadband X-ray spectra expected for deeply embedded accreting SMBHs. Hard X-ray spatially resolved observations of dual AGNs -- accessible only to HEX-P -- wiU hence transform our understanding of dual AGN in the nearby Universe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sizes of narrow emission line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could be estimated by [O  iii ] line luminosity L O3 through the known R NLRs− L O3 empirical relations. Unfortunately, it is not convenient to test the R NLRs− L O3 empirical relations through structure properties of spatially resolved NLRs of large samples of AGNs. In this manuscript, a method is proposed to test the |$R_{\mathrm{ NLRs}}\!\!-\!\!L_{\mathrm{ O3}}^{\sim 0.25}$| empirical relations for AGN NLRs through Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Type-2 AGNs having few orientation effects on NLR sizes expected by the AGN unified model, after considering sizes R fib of SDSS fibre-covered regions. Comparing R fib and R NLRs estimated by L O3, Type-2 AGNs with R fib > R NLRs (Sample-II) and with R fib < R NLRs (Sample-I) should have different physical properties of NLRs. Accepting electron density gradients in AGN NLRs, statistically higher electron densities (traced by lower flux ratio R S2 of [S  ii ] λ6717 Å to [S  ii ] λ6731 Å) could be expected for the Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I. Then, through the collected 1062 SDSS Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I and 3658 SDSS Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-II, statistically lower R S2 for the Type-2 AGNs in the Sample-I can be confirmed with confidence level higher than 5σ, even after considering necessary effects. Therefore, the results in this manuscript can provide strong clues to support that the reported |$R_{\mathrm{ NLRs}}~\propto ~L_{\mathrm{ O3}}^{0.25}$| empirical relation is preferred to estimate NLR sizes of SDSS AGNs through SDSS fibre spectroscopic results, and also to support the commonly expected electron density gradients in AGN NLRs. There is still a limited number of high-redshift (z > 3) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) whose jet kinematics have been studied with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Without a dedicated proper motion survey, regularly conducted astrometric VLBI observations of bright radio-emitting AGN with sensitive arrays can be utilized to follow changes in the jets, by means of high-resolution imaging and brightness distribution modelling. Here, we present a first-time VLBI jet kinematic study of NVSS J080518 + 614423 (z = 3.033) and NVSS J165844 − 073918 (z = 3.742), two flat-spectrum radio quasars that display milliarcsecond-scale jet morphology. Archival astrometric observations carried out mainly with the Very Long Baseline Array, supplemented by recent data taken with the European VLBI Network, allowed us to monitor changes in their radio structure in the 7.6−8.6 GHz frequency band, covering almost two decades. By identifying individual jet components at each epoch, we were able to determine the apparent proper motion for multiple features in both sources. Apparent superluminal motions range |$(1-14)\, c$|⁠ , and are found to be consistent with studies of other high-redshift AGN targets. Using the physical parameters derived from the brightness distribution modelling, we estimate the Doppler-boosting factors (δ ≈ 11.2 and δ ≈ 2.7), the Lorentz factors (Γ ≈ 7.4 and Γ ≈ 36.6), and the jet viewing angles (θ ≈ 4.4° and θ ≈ 8.0°), for NVSS J080518 + 614423 and NVSS J165844 − 073918, respectively. Identifying methods to discover dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) has proven to be challenging. Several indirect tracers have been explored in the literature, including X/S-shaped radio morphologies and double-peaked (DP) emission lines in the optical spectra. However, the detection rates of confirmed dual AGN candidates from the individual methods remain extremely small. We search for binary black holes (BBH) in a sample of six sources that exhibit both X-shaped radio morphology and DP emission lines using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Three out of the six sources show dual VLBA compact components, making them strong candidates for BBH sources. In addition, we present deep uGMRT images revealing the exquisite details of the X-shaped wings in three sources. We present a detailed precession modeling analysis of these sources. The black hole separations estimated from the simplistic geodetic precession model are incompatible with those estimated from emission line offsets and the VLBA separations. However, precession induced by a non-coplanar secondary black hole is a feasible mechanism for explaining the observed X-shaped radio morphologies and the black hole separations estimated from other methods. The black hole separations estimated from the double-peaked emission lines agree well with the VLBA compact component separations. Future multifrequency VLBA observations will be critical in ruling out or confirming the BBH scenario in the three galaxies with dual component detections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on deep SCUBA-2 observations at 850 |$\mu$| m and NOrthern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA) spectroscopic measurements at 2 mm of the environment surrounding the luminous, massive (M * ≈ 2 × 1011 M⊙) Herschel -selected source HerBS-70. This source was revealed by previous NOEMA observations to be a binary system of dusty star-forming galaxies at z  = 2.3, with the east component (HerBS-70E) hosting an active galactic nucleus. The SCUBA-2 observations detected, in addition to the binary system, 21 sources at >3.5σ over an area of ∼25 square comoving Mpc with a sensitivity of 1σ850 = 0.75 mJy. The surface density of continuum sources around HerBS-70 is three times higher than for field galaxies. The NOEMA spectroscopic measurements confirm the protocluster membership of three of the nine brightest sources through their CO(4–3) line emission, yielding a volume density 36 times higher than for field galaxies. All five confirmed sub-mm galaxies in the HerBS-70 system have relatively short gas depletion times (80−500 Myr), indicating the onset of quenching for this protocluster core due to the depletion of gas. The dark matter halo mass of the HerBS-70 system is estimated around 5 × 1013 M⊙, with a projected current-day mass of 1015 M⊙, similar to the local Virgo and Coma clusters. We study active galactic nucleus (AGN) line-driven disc winds using time-dependent radiation hydrodynamics. The key criterion for determining wind launching is the coupling strength of the ultraviolet radiation field via the spectral lines of the gas. The strength of these lines in turn relies crucially on the gas ionization state, determined by the local X-ray intensity. We consider a suite of models where the central ionizing radiation is affected by scattering, absorption, and re-emission by the intervening gas. In a pure attenuation model, the disc launches an episodic wind, as previous studies have shown. Including scattering or re-emission tends to weaken the wind, lowering the mass flux and outflow velocity and, if sufficiently dominant, suppressing the outflow entirely. However, the exponential nature of radiative attenuation means that only a modest, factor of a few, increase in the absorption cross-section can overcome the wind suppression due to scattering and re-emission. We find mass outflow rates of ∼20 per cent or more of the assumed inflow rate through the disc, indicating that radiation-driven winds may significantly alter the structure of the accretion flow. The winds also supply a large, time-varying column of material above the nominal constant disc scale height, which will determine the geometry of reprocessed emission from the central source. In this study of the 'Resolving supermAssive Black hole Binaries In galacTic hydrodynamical Simulations' (RABBITS) series, we investigate the orbital evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) during galaxy mergers. We simulate both disc and elliptical galaxy mergers using the ketju code, which can simultaneously follow galaxy (hydro-)dynamics and small-scale SMBH dynamics with post-Newtonian corrections. With our SMBH binary subgrid model, we show how active galactic nuclei (AGNs) feedback affects galaxy properties and SMBH coalescence. We find that simulations without AGN feedback exhibit excessive star formation, resulting in merger remnants that deviate from observed properties. Kinetic AGN feedback proves more effective than thermal AGN feedback in expelling gas from the centre and quenching star formation. The different central galaxy properties, which are a result of distinct AGN feedback models, lead to varying rates of SMBH orbital decay. In the dynamical friction phase, galaxies with higher star formation and higher SMBH masses possess denser centres, become more resistant to tidal stripping, experience greater dynamical friction, and consequently form SMBH binaries earlier. As AGN feedback reduces gas densities in the centres, dynamical friction by stars dominates over gas. In the SMBH hardening phase, compared to elliptical mergers, disc mergers exhibit higher central densities of newly formed stars, resulting in accelerated SMBH hardening and shorter merger time-scales (i.e. |$\lesssim 500$| Myr versus |$\gtrsim 1$| Gyr). Our findings highlight the importance of AGN feedback and its numerical implementation in understanding the SMBH coalescing process, a key focus for low-frequency gravitational wave observatories. We report the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae discovery of the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-23bd (AT 2023clx) in NGC 3799, a LINER galaxy with no evidence of strong active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity over the past decade. With a redshift of z  = 0.01107 and a peak ultraviolet (UV)/optical luminosity of (5.4 ± 0.4) × 1042 erg s−1, ASASSN-23bd is the lowest-redshift and least-luminous TDE discovered to date. Spectroscopically, ASASSN-23bd shows H α and He  i emission throughout its spectral time series, there are no coronal lines in its near-infrared spectrum, and the UV spectrum shows nitrogen lines without the strong carbon and magnesium lines typically seen for AGN. Fits to the rising ASAS-SN light curve show that ASASSN-23bd started to brighten on MJD 59988 |$^{+1}_{-1}$|⁠ , ∼9 d before discovery, with a nearly linear rise in flux, peaking in the g band on MJD |$60 \, 000^{+3}_{-3}$|⁠. Scaling relations and TDE light curve modelling find a black hole mass of ∼106 M⊙, which is on the lower end of supermassive black hole masses. ASASSN-23bd is a dim X-ray source, with an upper limit of |$L_{0.3-10\, \mathrm{keV}} \lt 1.0\times 10^{40}$| erg s−1 from stacking all Swift observations prior to MJD 60061, but with soft (∼0.1 keV) thermal emission with a luminosity of |$L_{0.3-2 \, \mathrm{keV}}\sim 4\times 10^{39}$| erg s−1 in XMM-Newton observations on MJD 60095. The rapid (t < 15 d) light curve rise, low UV/optical luminosity, and a luminosity decline over 40 d of Δ L 40 ≈ −0.7 dex make ASASSN-23bd one of the dimmest TDEs to date and a member of the growing 'Low Luminosity and Fast' class of TDEs. Models of accretion discs surrounding active galactic nuclei (AGNs) find vast applications in high-energy astrophysics. The broad strategy is to parametrize some of the key disc properties such as gas density and temperature as a function of the radial coordinate from a given set of assumptions on the underlying physics. Two of the most popular approaches in this context were presented by Sirko & Goodman and Thompson et al. We present a critical reanalysis of these widely used models, detailing their assumptions and clarifying some steps in their derivation that were previously left unsaid. Our findings are implemented in the pAGN module for the Python programming language, which is the first public implementation of these accretion-disc models. We further apply pAGN to the evolution of stellar-mass black holes embedded in AGN discs, addressing the potential occurrence of migration traps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent years have seen excellent progress in modelling the entrainment of T ∼ 104 K atomic gas in galactic winds. However, the entrainment of cool, dusty T ∼ 10–100 K molecular gas, which is also observed outflowing at high velocity, is much less understood. Such gas, which can be 105 times denser than the hot wind, appears extremely difficult to entrain. We run 3D wind-tunnel simulations with photoionization self-shielding and evolve thermal dust sputtering and growth. Unlike almost all such simulations to date, we do not enforce any artificial temperature floor. We find efficient molecular gas formation and entrainment, as well as dust survival and growth through accretion. Key to this success is the formation of large amounts of 104 K atomic gas via mixing, which acts as a protective 'bubble wrap' and reduces the cloud overdensity to χ ∼ 100. This can be understood from the ratio of the mixing to cooling time. Before entrainment, when shear is large, t mix/ t cool ≲ 1, and gas cannot cool below the 'cooling bottleneck' at 5000 K. Thus, the cloud survival criterion is identical to the well-studied purely atomic case. After entrainment, when shear falls, t mix/ t cool > 1, and the cloud becomes multiphase, with comparable molecular and atomic masses. The broad temperature PDF, with abundant gas in the formally unstable |$50 \, {\rm K} \lt T \lt 5000 \, {\rm K}$| range, agrees with previous ISM simulations with driven turbulence and radiative cooling. Our findings have implications for dusty molecular gas in stellar and active galactic nuclei outflows, cluster filaments, 'jellyfish' galaxies, and asymptomatic giant branch winds. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are known to exhibit optical/ultraviolet variability and most of them can be well modelled by the damped random walks. Physical processes that are not related to the accretion disc, such as tidal disruption events (TDEs) or moving foreground dusty clouds, can cause flare-like and eclipse-like features in the optical light curve. Both long-term and high-cadence monitoring are needed to identify such features. By combining the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey, we are able to identify a rare sample (11) out of the SDSS quasar catalogue (⁠|$\sim\!\! 83\, 000$|⁠). These quasars exhibit more or less constant brightness but show rapid optical variation in the epochs of ZTF Public Data Release 2. To investigate the possible origins of these flare/eclipse-like variabilities, we propose the second-epoch spectroscopic observations with the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. We find that the change in accretion rate plays a significant role in these quasar variabilities. Among them, we identify two changing-look AGN candidates: SDSS J1427+2930 and SDSS J1420+3757. The luminosity change of the former may be caused by the enhanced supermassive black hole's accretion or the TDE, while the latter is more related to the change in the accretion rate. This study presents the capabilities of the AXIS telescope in estimating redshifts from X-ray spectra alone (X-ray redshifts, XZs). Through extensive simulations, we establish that AXIS observations enable reliable XZ estimates for more than 5500 obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) up to redshift z ∼ 6 in the proposed deep (7 Ms) and intermediate (375 ks) surveys. Notably, at least 1600 of them are expected to be in the Compton-thick regime ( log N H / cm − 2 ≥ 24 ), underscoring the pivotal role of AXIS in sampling these elusive objects that continue to be poorly understood. XZs provide an efficient alternative for optical/infrared faint sources, overcoming the need for time-consuming spectroscopy, the potential limitations of photometric redshifts, and potential issues related to multi-band counterpart association. This approach will significantly enhance the accuracy of constraints on the X-ray luminosity function and obscured AGN fractions up to high redshifts. In this paper, we presented a detailed analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectrum of a new sub-kpc scale dual AGN candidate SDSS J222428.53+261423.2 (=SDSS J2224). The target is one of the few AGNs with all the optical narrow emission lines characterized by double-peaked profiles and with peak separations in velocity units of about 930 km s−1. If the double-peaked narrow emission lines (DPNELs) are due to a dual AGN in SDSS J2224, the estimated physical separation between the two cores is about 500 pc. Meanwhile, three alternative explanations are also discussed in this paper, however, we can not find solid evidence to completely rule them out. Our results support the presence of a sub-kpc dual AGN with DPNELs in all lines, indicating a key episode of galaxy merging evolution at sub-kpc scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gravitational instability in the outskirts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) disks leads to disk fragmentation and formation of ∼300 M ⊙ supermassive stars with potentially long lifetimes. Alternatively, stars can be captured ex situ and grow from gas accretion in the AGN disk. However, the number density distribution throughout the disk is limited by thermal feedback as their luminosities provide the dominant heating source. We derive equilibrium stellar surface density profiles under two limiting contexts: in the case where the stellar lifetimes are prolonged, due to the recycling of hydrogen-rich disk gas, only the fraction of gas converted into heat is removed from the disk accretion flow. Alternatively, if stellar composition recycling is inefficient and stars can evolve off the main sequence, the disk accretion rate is quenched toward smaller radii resembling a classical starburst disk, albeit the effective removal rate depends not only on the stellar lifetime, but also the mass of stellar remnants. For AGNs with central supermassive black hole masses of ∼106–108 M ⊙ accreting at ∼0.1 Eddington efficiency, we estimate a total number of 103–105 massive stars and the rate of stellar mergers to be 10−3 to 1 yr−1. We initiate the detailed study of the interaction between a swarm of massive stars through hydro and N -body simulations to provide better prescriptions of dynamical processes in AGN disks, and to constrain more accurate estimates of the stellar population. The interaction between supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback and the circumgalactic medium (CGM) continues to be an open question in galaxy evolution. In our study, we use smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to explore the impact of SMBH feedback on galactic metal retention and the motion of metals and gas into and through the CGM of L* galaxies. We examine 140 galaxies from the 25 Mpc cosmological volume Romulus25, with stellar masses between log(M */ M ⊙) = 9.5–11.5. We measure the fraction of metals remaining in the interstellar medium (ISM) and CGM of each galaxy and calculate the expected mass of each SMBH based on the M BH– σ relation (Kormendy & Ho 2013). The deviation of each SMBH from its expected mass, Δ M BH, is compared to the potential of its host via σ. We find that SMBHs with accreted mass above M BH– σ are more effective at removing metals from the ISM than undermassive SMBHs in star-forming galaxies. Overall, overmassive SMBHs suppress the total star formation of their host galaxies and more effectively move metals from the ISM into the CGM. However, we see little to no evacuation of gas from the CGM out of their halos, in contrast with other simulations. Finally, we predict that C iv column densities in the CGM of L* galaxies are unlikely to depend on host galaxy SMBH mass. Our results show that the scatter in the low-mass end of the M BH– σ relation may indicate how effective an SMBH is in the local redistribution of mass in its host galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) represents ionized gases traced by optical/UV lines beyond the stellar extent of galaxies. We herein introduce a novel multislit narrow-band spectroscopy method to conduct spatially resolved spectroscopy of the eDIG around a sample of nearby edge-on disk galaxies (eDIG-CHANGES). In this paper, we introduce the project design and major scientific goals, as well as a pilot study of NGC 3556 (M108). The eDIG is detected to a vertical extent of a few kiloparsecs above the disk, comparable to the X-ray and radio images. We do not see significant vertical variation of the [N ii ]/H α line ratio. A rough examination of the pressure balance between different circumgalactic medium phases indicates the magnetic field is in a rough pressure balance with the X-ray emitting hot gas and may play an important role in the global motion of both the eDIG and the hot gas in the lower halo. At the location of an Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observed UV bright background active galactic nucleus ∼29 kpc from the center of NGC 3556, the magnetic pressure is much lower than that of the hot gas and the ionized gas traced by UV absorption lines, although the extrapolation of the pressure profiles may cause some biases in this comparison. By comparing the position–velocity diagrams of the optical and CO lines, we also find the dynamics of the two gas phases are consistent with each other, with no evidence of a global inflow/outflow and a maximum rotation velocity of ∼150 km s−1. Energy equipartition and the energy budget in the jet are important issues for the radiation mechanism of blazars. Early work predominantly concentrated on flat-spectrum radio quasars and a limited number of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects. In this paper, we compile 348 high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) based on the catalog of active galactic nuclei (4LAC-DR3) from Fermi-LAT, and employ JetSet to fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these HBLs in the framework of the one-zone lepton model. We aim to determine whether the energy budget is reasonable and whether energy equipartition is satisfied in HBLs. The results of the statistical analysis suggest that: (1) SEDs of HBLs can be reproduced well by using the one-zone lepton model; however, it cannot achieve energy equalization, and the relativistic electron energy density is far greater than the magnetic field energy density, U e ≳ 100 U B ; (2) the majority of HBLs are located in the t cool < t dyn region (where the horizontal coordinate represents the jet power of electrons, while the ordinate indicates the ratio of the dynamic timescale to the cooling timescale), and the jet kinetic power of HBLs is greater than the jet power of radiation; there is a very low radiation efficiency, we deduce that HBLs may have optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows; (3) log ϵ B of HBLs is less than zero, which indicates that the jet kinetic power of HBLs is not affected by Poynting flux; (4) the relationships U e > U Syn ∼ U B , L e ∼ L p > L B ∼ L rad, and log ϵ e > 0.5 are established. The co-evolution between supermassive black holes and their environment is most directly traced by the hot atmospheres of dark matter halos. The cooling of the hot atmosphere supplies the central regions with fresh gas, igniting active galactic nuclei (AGN) with long duty cycles. The outflows from the central engine tightly couple with the surrounding gaseous medium and provide the dominant heating source, preventing runaway cooling. Every major modern hydrodynamical simulation suite now includes a prescription for AGN feedback to reproduce the realistic populations of galaxies. However, the mechanisms governing the feeding/feedback cycle between the central black holes and their surrounding galaxies and halos are still poorly understood. Galaxy groups are uniquely suited to constrain the mechanisms governing the cooling–heating balance, as the energy supplied by the central AGN can exceed the gravitational binding energy of halo gas particles. Here, we provide a brief overview of our knowledge of the impact of AGN on the hot atmospheres of galaxy groups, with a specific focus on the thermodynamic profiles of the groups. We then present our on-going efforts to improve on the implementation of AGN feedback in galaxy evolution models by providing precise measurements of the properties of galaxy groups. We introduce the XMM-Newton Group AGN Project (X-GAP), a large program on XMM-Newton targeting a sample of 49 galaxy groups out to R 500 c . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
