Abstract

The large range of time and length scales involved in type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) requires the use of flame models. As a prelude to exploring various options for flame models, we consider, in this paper, high-resolution three-dimensional simulations of the small-scale dynamics of nuclear flames in the supernova environment in which the details of the flame structure are fully resolved. The range of densities examined, 1 to 8 x 107 g cm-3, spans the transition from the laminar flamelet regime to the distributed burning regime where small scale turbulence disrupts the flame. The use of a low Mach number algorithm facilitates the accurate resolution of the thermal structure of the flame and the inviscid turbulent kinetic energy cascade, while implicitly incorporating kinetic energy dissipation at the grid-scale cutoff. For an assumed background of isotropic Kolmogorov turbulence with an energy characteristic of SN Ia, we find a transition density between 1 and 3 x 107 g cm-3 where the nature of the burning changes ualitatively. By 1 x 107 g cm-3, energy diffusion by conduction and radiation is exceeded, on the flame scale, by turbulent advection. As a result, the effective Lewis Number approaches unity. That is, the flame resembles a laminar flame, but is turbulently broadened with an effective diffusion coefficient, D_T \sim u' l, where u' is the turbulent intensity and l is the integral scale. For the larger integral scales characteristic of a real supernova, the flame structure is predicted to become complex and unsteady. Implications for a possible transition to detonation are discussed.

Abstract

Fish have long been recognized as having once comprised a particularly critical resource for native groups in many areas of California, and the various techniques employed in their extraction —whether from the ocean, rivers and streams, or lakes—were often both sophisticated and effective. The first account presented here (perhaps half of which is from previously published sources) provides a wealth of significant data, both old and new, on the construction and use of fish weirs in catching salmon in some of the state's major rivers. Parenthetically, it should be noted that the weirs described by Ringgold and Bidwell on the Sacramento River were entirely different structures, and were actually separated by some miles. The author and compiler, David R. Leeper, came to California during the gold rush, and later recounted his adventures and observations in The Argonauts of ‘Forty- Nine (1894). The article reprinted here was originally published in The American Archaeologist [Volume 2, Part 9, Sept 1898, pp. 227-230.] Leeper also contributed a number of other short articles on California Indians to The American Archaeologist and its predecessor The Antiquarian. The second account adds some additional historical context to the familiar story of the Lone Woman of San Nicholas, and makes it clear that her presence on the island and some details of her life there were well known years before her 'recovery' by George Nidever in 1853. Abstract

We have continued our study of finite size effects in the QCD spectrum on lattices ranging in size from $8^3\times 24$ to $16^3\times24$. We have increased our statistics for quark mass $am_q=0.025$ for the smallest lattice size. In addition, we have studied quark mass 0.0125 for lattice sizes $12^3\times24$ and $16^3\times24$. These lattice sizes correspond to a box 1.8--3.6 fm on a side when the rho mass at zero quark mass is used to set the scale. 199. D2.2 SPHERE HOLISTIC SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT KPI's Definitions and Assessment Methodology for the SPHERE Digital Twin Platform

KPIs related with the building renovation process, which will be enabled by the digital twin approach will be identified. This will cover: - Energy efficiency and operational performance metrics - Environmental performance metrics - Waste management and Circularity metrics - Construction process efficiency metrics Subtask 2.2.1 Environmental & Circularity Assessment Methodology (EKO): Circularity Assessment Methodology Development – Methodologies and assessment criteria for the improvement of the circularity and resource efficiency will be identified. Circular Economy Action Plan (COM/2015/0614) and 2018 Circular Economy Package will be addressed during the selection of platform methodology. Relevant quantities benchmarking metrics, and KPIs and information the required data for the dynamic assessment will be identified. Environmental Assessment Methodology Development - Assessment methodology will be compliant with the ISO 14040 series standards and the ILCD Handbook promoted by the European Commission. In addition, it will help to support the project implementation accordingly to the eco-design principles, as it is recommended in the Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC). The planned cradle-to-grave LCA study will be modularly built based on data gathered in the platform with a converging Material Flow Analysis approach, that allow the study of the financial equivalents of the products and services provided that will allow the Life Cycle Cost analyses approach and support the exploitation of the technology. Subtask 2.2.2 Life Cycle Cost Assessment methodology through Digital Twin Platform (Leader: EKO): To optimize and demonstrate the economic sustainability of the proposed concept, the Life Cycle Costing (LCC) methodology will be implemented in order to predict and assess the cost performance of the SPHERE solutions. The LCC study will follow the recommendations set in the Code of Practice on LCC published by SETAC and adapting the LCC related ISO standards developed for specific cases (e.g. ISO 15686 for building sector or the EN-ISO 15663 series for Petroleum and natural gas industries). LCC will be built in parallel to the material flow analyses methodology and functionality developed in the Task 7.1, with a capacity to analyses the whole life cycle of the building including the renovation, construction and usage of the building. The primary approach of this service will be to quantify the financial benefits of the platform within the whole life cycle. Subtask 2.2.3 Social Life Cycle Assessment Methodology (Leader: VTT): Complementary to the environmental and economic assessments in WP6. In this task, the social impacts of the proposed solution will be determined by means of the social life cycle assessment methodology following the UNEP/SETAC (2009). With that whole approach, the three aspects of sustainability will be covered. Following this guidelines, the result of the Task will be the a holistic sustainability assessment methodology definition, that is compliant with the digital twin based renovation process which will be later integrated as a software service within the SPHERE platform. &nbsp
