Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the sudden death of an infant under one year of age, which apparently occurring during sleep, remains unexplained after a complete necropsy and review of the history and of the circumstances of death. The author review the new researches about the risk factors, the standard investigations of death, the classification and the recommendations for the prevention of SIDS. The major risk factors are the prone sleeping, the exposure of infants to environmental hyperthermia and to cigarette smoke. The investigation of death comprises the clinical history, the circumstances of death, the necropsy and the radiological, metabolic or genetical, bacteriological, virological and toxicological analyses.
