- Abstract
In this article divine mercy is reflected upon within the context of "Franciscan voluntarism" as its philosophical framework. The polemic tone of the article is based on the premise that mercy is poorly reconciled with thinking founded on the primacy of the thinking subject or based on being as the right-tobe. Thus, the article has two parts: the first dedicated to the primacy of reason with being understood as the right-to-be, and the second to the primacy of the will with being seen as gift. Corresponding to the first part, God is had as a judge who applies the law that imposes itself in its objectivity and is the inspiration of human behavior, subject in its turn to the law that is rationally developed and divinely founded. Here, it is a question of justice administered with calculated rationality, extraneous to well-being and therefore to mercy, these being understood as a support without cause or measure. Corresponding to the second part, God is an agent who is absolutely free, unencumbered by any antecedent or contemporaneous exemplaristic model. He is a sovereign who will not endure any law, for he is superior to all laws. Rather, he distributes his gifts in total liberty and inspires in us an analagous behavior prodded by an infinite number of "faces" that call upon us (Levinas). The author hopes that the clarifications made above will become a premise for any subsequent theological research on mercy, in the sense that either one's thinking is rectified when the first place is given to the gift-of-being and liberty, and not to the right-to-be and necessity; or otherwise, the theme of mercy is, in a certain sense, a sudden interruption to one's thought process, or better, a protest against it that not everyone is prepared to share. It is, therefore, for the Franciscan school to defend and for Francis of Assisi to bear witness to, that mercy is the theological translation of well-being and that mercy should serve as the food of every relationship. - Abstract
Aba, a disciple of Epraem Syrus, was a Syriac poet who lived in the 4th and 5th centuries. His collected writings are not numerous and include a few fragments dispersed in some ancient manuscripts. The lengthiest of these texts, published thus far, is composed of 240 lines. It is found in one of the manuscripts preserved in St. Catherine's Monastery Mt. Sinai (ms. Sin. Syr. 67). It was published and translated into German by E. Beck in 1975. In it Aba explains the mercy of God in terminology taken from the world of finance. The mercy of God operates in such a way that God becomes indebted to man - His creature. This article offers the first translation of this text of Aba into Italian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Until the end of the 19th century the Portuguese villages of Coruche and Erra had two hospitals, which were managed by the local Misericórdias. The hospital of Coruche was the main healthcare facility and the only one that remained after 1883, when the failing brotherhood of Erra was assimilated into the Misericórdia of Coruche, and its hospital became extinct.. In this paper we describe the services provided by the hospitals during the 19th century and first decade of the 20th century. We analyzed the share of expenditure of the hospital in the budget of the brotherhood of Coruche, its medical staff, including their technical capabilities. Furthermore, the users of the hospitals are quantified and described. The fragility of the Hospital of Erra is also proved, as well as of the Misericórida of the same village, reflected in the weak assistance provided and on the low number of patients that it could receive. - Abstract
These reflections do not intend to treat the sacrament of Penance in all of its constituent parts, but they do aim to stress two perspectives in which the sacrament can be understood and celebrated, namely the juridical and the medicinal or psycho-therapeutic. These two perspectives were introduced into the doctrine of the sacrament in particular by John Paul II. They neither exclude nor oppose one another. Rather, they are intimately complementary and when treated as such they offer an integral vision and praxis of the sacrament. This integral perspective of Penance prevents the sacrament from being celebrated as merely a confession of sins, since it extends to the totality of the life of the penitent. Sins do not fall from the clouds, but they arise from the existential situation of the penitent. One must know this anthropological context in order to assess correctly and fairly how someone may have broken a divine commandment. In this setting the role of the confessor is important and fatiguing. He certainly knows the doctrine of the sacrament, but he may not always know the real existential conditions and the conditionings to which the penitent is often exposed. It is not enough to know the principles to resolve every problem; one must be an "expert in humanity", as Paul VI wrote in reference to the Church. To this end, at least in situations than happen regularly, communication with the penitent is indispensable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rubens Alves Costa.pdf: 1604759 bytes, checksum: e2c8396fad8bd842f31d898a25a36cb7 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2021-08-11 This thesis entitled "Seek first the justice of God: Mt 6.33" addresses the theme of justice in the Matean gospel, which consists of the articulation of the social practices taught in the Sermon on the Mount. The practices of justice / righteousness taught by Jesus aimed to mitigate the sufferings of people who lived on the margins of society as well as to minimize the differences among them. The justice of the Matthew Gospel builds social equality (symmetry). Therefore, it was opposed to the modus operandi of the internal and external domination suffered by Palestine of the first Christian century which built and fostered inequalities in society. However, in the Gospel of Matthew there are indications that justice was not being practiced by the members of Mathew's community. The general objective of the research is to demonstrate that the praxis of justice / righteousness taught by Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, transforms the community for equality, solidarity, sharing, mercy, etc. In this understanding, it will be demonstrated that materialism is a consequence of the absence of justice. The research is based on the proposition that "The justice of the Gospel of Matthew 6.33 is merciful. It refutes unfair social practices and guides the community towards equality, sharing, solidarity and concern for the little ones". For the investigation of the hypothesis in the first chapter, an exegesis of the pericope Mt 6.25-34 is made from the historical-critical method with which it is evident that there was a lack of the practices of the justice of God in almost all segments of society, including in Mathew's community. In the second chapter through the bibliographic review, the contexts of the text Mt 6.33 are combined from the perspective that the current asymmetries in Palestinian society in the first century of the common era were consequences of the lack of justice. It was concluded that justice in the perspective of the biblical narrative is the elimination of inequalities among women, men and children. It is not an ideological perception, but rather the articulation of merciful practices Esta tese intitulada de "Buscai em primeiro lugar a justiça de Deus: Mt 6,33" aborda o tema justiça no Evangelho mateano que consiste na articulação das práticas sociais ensinadas no Sermão da Montanha. A justiça do Evangelho mateano constrói a igualdade (simetria) social.

This paper is a Master's research on the branch of systematic Theology in the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology, which seeks to develop the theme: "The revelation of Love: the foundation of the Church which "goes forth" according to Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium". The main objective is to try to demonstrate that the Church which 'goes forth' finds her real foundation on the love of God who gets out of Himself to give himself to others. This research is justified because the Church is missionary by her very nature. That is why She is always in the dynamic of 'go forth' renewing the structures so as to bring about a real pastoral conversion which is capable to influence the structures of postmodern thinking through the Word of God. Thus, the Church which 'goes forth', founded on love, lives and announces the mercy, being welcoming to all, in a preferential way for the poor, showing the face of Jesus Christ, Word incarnated of Father, witnessing the joy of Gospel.

In the Questions on charity in the ST (2a2ae, qq. 23-46), Aquinas considers at length the vices opposed to charity, omitting altogether any Question on a vice opposed to mercy. What does the omission reveal about mercy and its difficulties? First, I reject ready-to-hand explanations of the omission. Second, I consider the relation between mercy and compassion, showing that for Thomas the primary impediments to compassion are less vices than psychological forces irreducible to any single vice. Third, I turn to a different set of obstacles to mercy – acts that can arise from compassion, but do not help (and often harm) the person in need. Given these difficulties, how can Thomas take the practice of virtuous mercy to be generally possible? I conclude with a discussion of suffering and the gift of wisdom. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract

- Abstract
This essay aims to show hospitality to the leper as a foundational experience in the life of Francis of Assisi. Located at the beginning of his conversion process -as conveyed in his Testament- the encounter and the practice of mercy with the lepers allowed the dissatisfied young man to break with his previous searches for meaning. At the same time, they revealed a new horizon of life remedied from his own frailties and the frail- ties of others which ask to be recognized, assumed and embraced. In the dynamism of giving and receiving, the most vulnerable -the leper- will be who will experience the most significant donation/revelation; indeed, in the wounded flesh of the leper, Fran- cis comes to «understand» what the incarnation is: the kenosis of God that manifests itself in a special way in the shattered flesh of humanity. Thus, the guest reveals some- thing that will change the meaning and destiny of Francis’s life: the next and final twenty years of his life will be indelibly sealed by that encounter. Going forward, the challenge that will be presented to the poor man of Assisi will be to commemorate this very first experience as a catalyst to be able to “fruitfully host” the wounds and anx- ieties that he will receive from his brothers in the Order, his infirm and wounded body and from an (apparently) absent God... in the silence of his final great night., El presente estudio se propone mostrar la hospitalidad con el leproso como experiencia fundante en la vida de Francisco de Asís. A Provincial Minister requested St. Francis to retreat to a hermitage to devote himself to the contemplative life before the occurrence of the serious governance problems that beset the Order. St. Francis wrote to the minister the theological letter ever written in the history of Christianity on the mercy of God concretized in the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. The letter was written between the Earlier Rule (1221) and the Later Rule (1223), and its doctrine was legislated in Regula Bulatta for the whole Order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EnglishThe Auto de la Residencia del Hombre is a play that can be found in the Codice de Autos Viejos manuscript. The play puts on stage a character called Hombre (Man, Everyman) that has to go to court, presided by Justicia (Justice). The judicial character acts in tandem with Misericordia (Mercy), and this combination of two of God’s attributes makes pardon possible. The final exaltation of Encarnacion (Incarnation) and Redencion (Redemption), so characteristic of the Proces de Paradis, is replaced here by the Eucharist. As regards Hombre, after having accepted a sentence that delivers him from a feared condemnation, he declares himself convinced that Grace's help is enough for him to reach salvation. Thus, the debate between Liberty and Grace is implicit here, without there actually being a strong echo of the final 16th-century polemic between Jesuits and Dominicans. francaisAu sein du Codice de autos viejos, l’Auto de la Residencia del Hombre nous montre la comparution de l’Homme devant le tribunal de la Justice.

The testamentary legacies were destined to endow the families of the Casa Pia de la Misericordia of Seville from different places, some of the Indies or Hispanic America. Some sent to provide poor young people and others with relatives. One of the most interesting cases found in the documentation was a subservient living in Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru, who sent money to obtain a date to send poor maidens. The singular thing of the case is that it coincided with the entry of this stage with the great plague of 1649 that caused the worst mortality that the city remembers. This money was not used for the will of the testator, but for other purposes more in memorable moments.

Our work analyzes those sentenced to death, demonstrating the assistance of the Misericordias at various times. We highlight the performance of the assistance of these confraternities to poor prisoners, but we focus on the study when those sentenced to death were preparing to die and in the collection of their bones. We are concerned with analyzing the functioning of Justice in the period under analysis, as well as giving visibility to the rituals that the Misericórdias performed whenever the condemned to death died and waited for mercy., Gure lanak heriotza-zigorrera kondenatutakoak aztertzen ditu, erruki-etxeen lana ikertuz mugatutako epeko momentu ezberdinetan. Kofradia hauek preso txiroei laguntzeko egindako papera azpimarratzen hasiko gara, geroago haien zereginaren azterketan eragiteko, bai zigor kapitalarekin zigortutakoak hiltzeko prestatzen ari ziren momentuetan, baita bere hezurren bilketan ere.

- Abstract
This paper reviews the history of the different positions on Catholics divorced and remarried. There is a history before pope Francis, dominated by the official position, although questioned in the last decades by some sectors in the Church. Pope Francis has changed the situation by stimulating the debate on pastoral challenges to the family, among them, the problem of Catholics divorced and remarried. Cardinal Kasper's proposal will become a fundamental reference point for the pre-synodal discussion. The ecclesiastical climate is ripe for changes; but the solution is in the hands of the Synod of Bishops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taking as a starting point the reflections of Pope Francis on the relationship between faith and morality, published in a recent interview, this article explores the repercussions that the former, understood as the experience of God's mercy, has in the moral life of the Christian, and in the magisterial and pastoral service of the Church. The analysis of this subject from the biblical, theological and moral standpoint allows us to conclude the decisive centrality of mercy not only in the application of the moral teachings but even in their elaboration. Throughout the documental investigation existing in the Historical Archive of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Sardoal, it became possible to clarify a set of historiographical uncertainties around the construction process of the Church of Misericórdia, mainly regarding its chronology and the architects involved in its construction. Therefore, the documentation revealed us that the reconstruction of the Misericórdia church in Sardoal had its starting point in a project by João de Castilho and its execution was undertaken by Lucas Fernandes,a mason from Coimbra, who has finished the work for 120,000 reais., Por intermédio da investigação documental quinhentista existente no Arquivo Histórico da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Sardoal, tornou-se possível clarificar um conjunto de incertezas historiográficas em torno do processo construtivo da igreja da Misericórdia, sobretudo, quanto à sua cronologia e os mestres envolvidos na respetiva empreitada.

Abstract: This essay aims to show hospitality to the leper as a foundational experience in the life of Francis of Assisi. Located at the beginning of his conversion process –as conveyed in his Testament– the encounter and the practice of mercy with the lepers allowed the dissatisfied young man to break with his previous searches for meaning. At the same time, they revealed a new horizon of life remedied from his own frailties and the frailties of others which ask to be recognized, assumed and embraced. In the dynamism of giving and receiving, the most vulnerable –the leper– will be who will experience the most significant donation/revelation; indeed, in the wounded flesh of the leper, Francis comes to «understand» what the incarnation is: the kenosis of God that manifests itself in a special way in the shattered flesh of humanity. Thus, the guest reveals something that will change the meaning and destiny of Francis’s life: the next and final twenty years of his life will be indelibly sealed by that encounter. Going forward, the challenge that will be presented to the poor man of Assisi will be to commemorate this very first experience as a catalyst to be able to “fruitfully host” the wounds and anxieties that he will receive from his brothers in the Order, his infirm and wounded body and from an (apparently) absent God... in the silence of his final great night.

Abstract: The collection organized by Paul for the poor Christians in Jerusalem is a theoretical and practical example of Christian mercy. Among the contradictory conceptions of Christianity, the punishing God vs. the merciful God is likely the most radical one. Throughout two thousand years of Christian history, the idea of the punishing God whose wrath against human sins is aimed at punishing them through certain scourges has been used to explain natural disasters such as epidemics. This has fostered the emergence of a "pastoral of fear" supported by the traditional themes of Christian eschatology and the insistence on the eternal punishments of hell. The paper aims to analyze the historical evolution of this idea through some representative historical moments, like the plague pandemics in the 6th-8th-, the 14th- and the 17th-centuries. Since the debate on the punishing God has enjoyed new relevance during the Covid-19 pandemic, the conclusions try to explain the reasons for the continuing success of this idea, even in a changed sociocultural context.

An introductory foreword concerning the relations between mercy and justice which are expressed in some recent pontifical papers of Pope Francesco and their actuation in canon law. Equity and canon law in thought of Giuseppe Capograssi. Cluny at the epoch of Alger of Liege and his life. Mercy and canon law in his De Misericordia et Iustitia; the some concerning Gratian’s Decretum. Relationship between De Misericordia and Decretum: passages in which there is concordance and others in Decretum without concordance.

Mercy appears as the nucleus of his theology of history as well as the mystical theology of the Franciscan author. The final part of the paper points out connections in his theology, preaching, and the social impact of these ideas in the Castilian society of that epoch.
