Since the building-blocks of supersymmetric models include chiral superfields containing pairs of effective scalar fields, a two-field approach is particularly appropriate for models of inflation based on supergravity. In this paper, we generalize the two-field analysis of the inflationary power spectrum to supergravity models with arbitrary K\"ahler potential. We show how two-field effects in the context of no-scale supergravity can alter the model predictions for the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, yielding results that interpolate between the Planck-friendly Starobinsky model and BICEP2-friendly predictions. In particular, we show that two-field effects in a chaotic no-scale inflation model with a quadratic potential are capable of reducing $r$ to very small values $\ll 0.1$. We also calculate the non-Gaussianity measure $f_{\rm NL}$, finding that is well below the current experimental sensitivity., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures

We reconsider thermal production of axions in the early universe, including axion couplings to all Standard Model (SM>) particles. Concerning the axion coupling to gluons, we find that thermal effects enhance the axion production rate by a factor of few with respect to previous computations performed in the limit of small strong gauge coupling. Furthermore, we find that the top Yukawa coupling induces a much larger axion production rate, unless the axion couples to SM particles only via anomalies., This work was supported in part by the European Programme PITN-GA-2009-23792 (UNILHC). While the cosmic baryon asymmetry has been measured at high accuracy to be 6.1*10^-10, a corresponding lepton asymmetry could be as large as 10^-2 if it hides in the neutrino sector. It has been known for some time that a large asymmetry can be generated from a small initial asymmetry given the existence of a sterile neutrino with a mass less than the mass of the active neutrino. While the magnitude of the final lepton asymmetry is deterministic, its sign has been conjectured to be chaotic in nature. This has been proven in the single momentum approximation, also known as the quantum rate equations, but has up to now not been established using the full momentum dependent quantum kinetic equations. Here we investigate this problem by solving the quantum kinetic equations for a system of 1 active and 1 sterile neutrino on an adaptive grid. We show that by increasing the resolution oscillations in the lepton asymmetry are eliminated and that the sign of the lepton asymmetry is in fact deterministic. We consider a relativistic plasma of fermions coupled to an Abelian gauge field and carrying a chiral charge asymmetry, which might arise in the early Universe through baryogenesis. It is known that on large length scales, $\lambda \gtrsim 1/(\alpha \mu_5)$, the chiral anomaly opens an instability toward the erasure of chiral charge and growth of magnetic helicity. Here the chemical potential $\mu_{5}$ parametrizes the chiral asymmetry and $\alpha$ is the fine-structure constant. We study the process of chiral charge erasure through the thermal fluctuations of magnetic helicity and contrast with the well-studied phenomenon of Chern-Simons number diffusion. Through the fluctuation-dissipation theorem we estimate the amplitude and time scale of helicity fluctuations on the length scale $\lambda$, finding $\delta \mathcal{H} \sim \lambda T$ and $\tau \sim \alpha \lambda^3 T^2$ for a relativistic plasma at temperature $T$. We argue that the presence of a chiral asymmetry allows the helicity to grow diffusively for a time $t \sim T^3/(\alpha^5 \mu_5^4)$ until it reaches an equilibrium value $\mathcal{H} \sim \mu_{5} T^2 / \alpha$, and the chiral asymmetry is partially erased. If the chiral asymmetry is small, $\mu_5 < T/\alpha$, this avenue for chiral charge erasure is found to be slower than the chiral magnetic effect for which $t \sim T / (\alpha^3 \mu_{5}^2)$. We study quantum effects in Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity, in which the metric and connection are treated as independent variables. We exploit the fact that the cutoff, above which perturbation theory breaks down, is higher than the scale of inflation. Unless new physics above the cutoff leads to unnaturally large corrections, we can directly connect low-energy physics and inflation. On the one hand, the lower bound on the top Yukawa coupling due to collider experiments leads to an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to gravity: $\xi \lesssim 10^8$. On the other hand, the Higgs potential can only support successful inflation if $\xi \gtrsim 10^6$. This leads to a fairly strict upper bound on the top Yukawa coupling of $0.925$ (defined in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$-scheme at the energy scale $173.2\,\text{GeV}$) and constrains the inflationary prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We present a lattice formulation of an interaction ${\phi\over\Lambda} F\tilde F$ between an axion and some $U(1)$ gauge sector with the following properties: it reproduces the continuum theory up to $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ corrections, it preserves exact gauge invariance and shift symmetry on the lattice, and it is suitable for self-consistent expansion of the Universe. The lattice equations of motion can no longer be solved by explicit methods, but we propose an implicit method to overcome this difficulty, which preserves the relevant system constraints down to arbitrary (tunable) precision. As a first application we study, in a comoving grid in $(3+1)$ dimensions, the last efolds of axion-inflation with quadratic potential and the preheating stage following afterwards. We fully account for the inhomogeneity and non-linearity of the system, including the gauge field contribution to the expansion rate of the Universe and its backreaction into the axion dynamics. We characterize in detail, as a function of the coupling, the energy transfer from the axion to the gauge field. Two coupling regimes are identified, sub- and super-critical, depending on whether the final energy fraction stored in the gauge field is below or above $\sim 50\%$ of the total energy. The Universe is very efficiently reheated for super-critical couplings, rapidly entering in a radiation dominated stage. We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. In the framework of a 3+1 scheme with an additional inert state, we consider the thermalisation of sterile neutrinos in the early Universe taking into account the full $4\times4$ mixing matrix. The evolution of the neutrino energy distributions is found solving the momentum-dependent kinetic equations with full diagonal collision terms, as in previous analyses of flavour neutrino decoupling in the standard case. The degree of thermalisation of the sterile state is shown in terms of the effective number of neutrinos, $N_{\rm eff}$, and its dependence on the three additional mixing angles ($\theta_{14}$, $\theta_{24}$, $\theta_{34}$) and on the squared mass difference $\Delta m^2_{41}$ is discussed. Our results are relevant for fixing the contribution of a fourth light neutrino species to the cosmological energy density, whose value is very well constrained by the final Planck analysis. For the preferred region of active-sterile mixing parameters from short-baseline neutrino experiments, we find that the fourth state is fully thermalised ($N_{\rm eff}\simeq 4$)., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures. We report on a new search for solar chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). A GridPix detector was used to search for soft X-ray photons in the energy range from 200 eV to 10 keV from converted solar chameleons. No signiffcant excess over the expected background has been observed in the data taken in 2014 and 2015. Structure formation at small cosmological scales provides an important frontier for dark matter (DM) research. Scenarios with small DM particle masses, large momenta or hidden interactions tend to suppress the gravitational clustering at small scales. The details of this suppression depend on the DM particle nature, allowing for a direct link between DM models and astrophysical observations. However, most of the astrophysical constraints obtained so far refer to a very specific shape of the power suppression, corresponding to thermal warm dark matter (WDM), i.e., candidates with a Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein momentum distribution. In this work we introduce a new analytical fitting formula for the power spectrum, which is simple yet flexible enough to reproduce the clustering signal of large classes of non-thermal DM models, which are not at all adequately described by the oversimplified notion of WDM. We show that the formula is able to fully cover the parameter space of sterile neutrinos (whether resonantly produced or from particle decay), mixed cold and warm models, fuzzy dark matter, as well as other models suggested by effective theory of structure formation (ETHOS). Based on this fitting formula, we perform a large suite of N-body simulations and we extract important nonlinear statistics, such as the matter power spectrum and the halo mass function. Finally, we present first preliminary astrophysical constraints, based on linear theory, from both the number of Milky Way satellites and the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest.
