The article reports that the pelican that crashed into a car on the Pacific Coast Highway in British Columbia suffered from domoic acid poisoning. Domoic acid is a nerve toxin produced by algae. Once the birds eat the dining fish that feasted on the algae with domoic acid, a chemical reaction occurs that produces hallucinations and seizures in birds. Domoic acid poisoning can cause pelicans to dive into parking lots. The pelican which crashed into a car sustained a broken toe. Its webbing was sewed up after the collision.
