Antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the top pharmaceutical contaminants that have been often found in the aquatic environment. The presence of these contaminants in the aquatic environment is of great concern since it has a negative impact on both ecology and human health. In contrast to other tertiary treatments, adsorption stands out as a viable treatment approach since it provides benefits such as easier operating conditions with no byproduct formation. Commercial activated carbon is widely researched as a pharmaceutical adsorbent, but its large-scale applicability is constrained by its high cost. Agricultural waste also contains a large amount of various functional groups, which may be adapted to surface modification to increase its adsorption ability. In this regard, this study is designed to review the recent progress of efficient adsorbents derived from various agricultural wastes for the removal of antibiotics and NSAIDs contaminants from water bodies. Adsorbents made from agricultural waste have important benefits over commercial activated carbon for the reduction in waste while controlling water pollution.

Background: Substance abuse admission to health facilities following the pandemic is often met with challenges. COVID-19 is causing an insurmountable psychosocial impact on the whole of mankind. Marginalized communities, particularly those with substance use disorders (SUDs), are also likely to suffer from greater psychosocial burden. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate substance abuse trends before and during the pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending selected government hospitals in Malaysia. Data from the year 2018 to 2021 was utilized. Results: A total of 9,606 patients consisting of 7881 males and 1725 females were identified. Most of the patients involved with substance abuse from 2018 to 2021 were males, aged between 26 and 44 years old, Malays, high school students, singles, workers of private sectors and those residing in urban areas. The most abused substances over the four years were tobacco (61.8%), followed by amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) (43.1%), alcohol (39.7%), cannabis (17.2%), opioids (13.0%), and kratom (8.8%). Those who worked in the private sector and were self-employed or unemployed were more associated with substance abuse during the pandemic compared to those who worked in the government sector. Those with a history of psychiatric illness were more associated with abuse of substances during the pandemic than those without the history (adjusted OR: 1.18, 95% CI 1.09–1.29, p <0.001). Conclusions: Targeted exploration of factors affecting substance abuse in Malaysia is essential. The results of this study assist in identifying variations in substance abuse treatment characteristics for those admitted to treatment in Malaysia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. Studies have highlighted that healthcare workers are exposed to various forms of psychological distress. This study aimed to assess the psychological well-being of pharmacy staff during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associating factors. Methods. The cross-sectional study explored the psychological well-being of pharmacy staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. An adopted questionnaire was employed to collect quantitative data from January 1, 2021 to June 30, 2021. Results. A total of 515 respondents were recruited. Those who perceived good health status were 1.9 times more likely to have normal depression scores (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 0.53; B = −0.64), and 2.4 times (RRR = 0.41; B = −0.88) more likely to have normal stress scores. Those who were greatly affected by COVID-19 in their work were found to be 1.2 times (RRR = 1.20; B = 0.18) more likely to have moderate anxiety scores and 1.44 times (RRR = 1.44; B = 0.36) more likely to have severe depression scores. Respondents with higher work characteristic scores were more likely to have normal depression, stress and anxiety scores. Conclusions. Good health status perception and work characteristics appeared to be the factors affecting respondents' scores in all dimensions of psychological well-being. Innovations in the field of science and technology transferred to engineering applications led to the rapid pace of urbanisation across the globe. The impact of urbanisation and change in lifestyle of the society is producing thumping municipal solid wastes of 62 million tonnes per year in our ecosystem and its concomitant environmental issues, which need to be addressed critically. Processing of the waste collected can be conducted only on 34.14% of the collected wastes remaining are dumped openly. This paper critically reviews different techniques to convert municipal waste to useful products with specific emphasis on municipalities of India because of its diversified terrain and culture. It is observed that 0.44 kg/capita/day, per capita waste, is generated in metro cities of India. The management and processing of these wastes are analysed. Reprocessing of non-renewable wastes for structural applications from this municipal waste into novel composites is discussed here. Cost and energy-efficient composite materials can be fabricated using biodegradable waste materials, detailed fabrication methods and mechanisms are discussed in this review. Carbonised biodegradable waste is used as reinforcement with an aluminium matrix, exposing the opportunities to use it in composite applications. Rasagiline (RAS) is a medication for Parkinson's disease that increases dopamine levels in the brain by inhibiting monoamine oxidase, helping to alleviate symptoms. The proposed study aims to develop an efficient, feasible, and sensitive method for RAS assay, utilizing Pyrosin B dye, a convenient fluorescent ligand. Combining the RAS analyte with Pyrosin B ligand in a mildly acidic buffered solution rapidly quenches the native fluorescence of the ligand. This quenching results from the formation of a specific ion‐dipole association complex between the lone pair‐bearing atoms of the ligand and the protonated amine moiety of RAS, highlighting their interactive chemistry under these conditions. The degree of this interaction demonstrated superior sensitivity compared with reported alternatives, exhibiting a linear range of 50.0 to 1000.0 ng/mL. The method is characterized by a limit of detection (LOD) of 16.0 ng/mL and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 48.0 ng/mL. By optimizing the RAS‐Pyrosin B system, the variable parameters were finely tuned, ensuring the assay method's reliability. The method's accuracy, precision, selectivity, and robustness were validated according to International Council for Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, enabling precise and efficient analysis of RAS in the nanogram range. This method streamlines the analysis procedure and reduces environmental impact, making it a promising approach for the quality control of ParkintreatR tablets (1 mg) and other analytical applications. Sungai Merbok Mangrove Forest Reserve, encompassing the Merbok river estuary, was established as a permanent forest reserve in 1951 and is the second-largest intact mangrove forest patch in Peninsular Malaysia. Despite its importance, few studies have been conducted to assess its aquatic biodiversity. In this study, we surveyed the fish diversity of the Merbok river estuary, and its adjacent marine waters. We recorded 138 fish species belonging to two classes, 18 orders, 47 families, and 94 genera. The richest order is Perciformes, with 32 recorded species, represents 23% of the alpha diversity, followed by Carangiformes with 21 recorded species or 14% of the diversity. Low taxonomic diversity overlaps with previous inventories and indicates that the inventory is still incomplete. All specimens examined are catalogued and deposited in a local museum collection. The fish checklist presented here represents a step forward in the conservation of fish diversity in the Merbok river estuary.

The calculation was made according to the variables extracted from medical records.Materials and Methods: Data collection was performed retrospectively on a total of 293 cases from Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Kedah, Malaysia. The data consisted of personal information, treatment history, and investigation findings, including blood results, USG abdomen results, and CT scan results. The site of culture and sensitivity were also obtained. The total direct medical cost was based on the antibiotics/treatments received by the patients, diagnostic test and investigations performed. The trend analysis used to see the pattern of costs from 2014 to 2017. All the costs were compared based on patients’ status and duration of stay at the hospital using the independent t-test.Results: The overall mean of direct medical cost for melioidosis amounted to US $233.61 (RM931.33). Overall, the finding confirms a huge reduction (44.7%) of direct medical cost from 2014 to 2017 (P = 0.001). From 2015 to 2016, there was a 19.1% reduction of direct medical cost (P> 0.95), followed by a 38.8% reduction in costs from 2016 to 2017 (P = 0.019). In the case of the duration of stay, the mean of total direct medical cost among patients with ≥ 14 duration of stay was higher compared to those with < 14 duration of stay (p < 0.001). There was no significant mean difference of direct medical cost between patients who were cured and died.Conclusion: Despite the higher mortality of melioidosis cases compared to other infectious diseases, there is a limitation in the amount of published data on the management cost of melioidosis. The importance of cost in managing this disease should be underlined to perform a fully prepared management toward the disease.Keywords: melioidosis, direct medical cost, trend analysis

Abstract Background Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a life‐threatening oncologic emergency associated with fatal complications including arrhythmia. The epidemiology and mortality outcomes of arrhythmia in TLS are scarcely studied in the literature. Methods We used the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to study the prevalence and outcome of arrhythmia in patients hospitalized with TLS (ICD‐9 code 277.88) from 2009 to 2014. Baseline characteristics, burden of arrhythmia, and pertinent outcomes were analyzed. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify the impact of underlying malignancy in predicting TLS‐related mortality. Results A total of 9034 cases of arrhythmia among 37 861 TLS patients were identified. More than half of the arrhythmia cases (67%) were found among white old (>65) males admitted to large bed size and urban teaching hospitals. Arrhythmic cohort showed higher frequency of comorbidities such as fluid‐electrolyte disturbances, hypertension, congestive heart failure, renal failure, dyslipidemia, diabetes, pulmonary circulatory disorders, chronic pulmonary disease, coagulopathy, and deficiency anemia. The most common malignancies were leukemia, lymphoma, metastatic tumor, and solid tumor without metastasis. Achieving optimum energy conversion in thermodynamic systems, such as in the thermal power plants (TPPs), is a complex task due to the involvement of several factors. One of the effective ways of determining the quantity & quality of energy systems is via energy and exergy analysis. This study is a comparative evaluation of the energy & exergy analyses of coal and gas-fired TPPs. Details of different studies on TPPs over the years were critically reviewed, followed by independent thermodynamics analysis of each component of the TPPs system. Improvements in the performance of power plants were also highlighted. From the outcome of the comparative analysis, combustion chambers were identified as the main contributors to exergy destruction owing to their associated high irreversibility. The results show that the exergy efficiency of the entire system is about 20%. The main exergy loss were occurred in the boiler and the steam turbine in the system. For further improvements, this review highlighted some of the areas for further research and made recommendations for improvement in some aspects of the existing TPPs.

Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) stimulates angiogenesis that leads to the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Alu repetitive elements in ACE gene increase the expression of this enzyme. We investigated the frequency of Alu repetitive elements, insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism, in angiotensin-converting enzyme among diabetic retinopathy patients and whether this polymorphism is associated with the severity of retinopathy in Jordanians with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A total of 277 subjects participated in this case/ control study (100 diabetic patients without DR, 82 diabetic patients with DR, and 95 healthy control). Blood samples were withdrawn, followed by DNA extraction. Alu repetitive elements were examined by polymerase chain reaction followed by gel electrophoresis. Results: The genotype and allele frequencies among diabetic patients, were close to healthy controls (genotypes, II 44.4 vs. 44.7%, ID 44.4 vs. 42.6%, DD 12.2 vs. 12.8%, P = 0.402 and 0.677 respectively, alleles, I 65.6 vs. 66%, D 34.4 vs. 34%, P=0.863). Complicated diabetics with retinopathy showed similar genotype and allele frequency to those without complications. The severity of diabetic retinopathy in affected individuals was not correlated with I/D polymorphism (P=0.862). Conclusions: We conclude that the presence of Alu repetitive elements did not increase the development or progression risk to retinopathy in Jordanian type 2 diabetic patients. No association between I or D alleles with the severity of DR was detected.

This present study investigates experimentally and numerically the behaviour of 1 mm thick aluminium 2024-T3 alloy sheets from near field shock waves. A comparison and examination are undertaken with respect to global deformation and plastic damage formation from two different stand-off distances of 4 mm and 50 mm that were exposed to a constant charged mass. A 4-cable instrumented pendulum blast set-up was used to carry out and monitor the blast test. The results of the blast test were subsequently used to simulate the pressure history for different stand-off distances. The simulation involved implementing a user subroutine in ABAQUS/Explicit solver to model non-uniform pressure fields for use in finite element simulation. The results provided a strong alignment of the numerical method when compared with the experimental data. The main outcome of this study is to show the significant effect of the changing damage from highly localised perforation to global deformation when the stand-off distance is changed from 4 mm to 50 mm.

Objective: To identify the predictors of mortality among in-hospital melioidosis patients. Methods: A total of 453 patients in Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Kedah, and Hospital Tuanku Fauziah, Perlis with culture-confirmed melioidosis were retrospectively included in the study. Advanced multiple logistic regression was used to obtain the final model of predictors of mortality from melioidosis. The analysis was performed using STATA/SE 14.0. Results: A total of 50.11% (227/453) of the patients died at the hospital, and a majority (86.75%, 393/453) of cases were bacteremic. The logistic regression estimated that the bacteremic type of melioidosis, low platelet count, abnormal white blood cell counts, and increased urea value were predictors of mortality. The results showed that bacteremic melioidosis increased the risk of death by 4.39 times (OR 4.39, 95% CI 1.83-10.55, P=0.001) compared to non-bacteremic melioidosis. Based on laboratory test, the adjusted ORs from the final model showed that all three blood investigations were included as the associated factors of mortality for the disease [high white blood cell (>10×109/L): OR 2.43, 95% CI 1.41-4.17, P7 800 μmol/L): OR 5.53, 95% CI 2.50-12.30, P

Abstract Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the diagnostic imaging modalities employing in lesion detection in neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Advances in MRI techniques such as double inversion recovery (DIR) made it more sensitive to distinguish lesions in the brain. To investigate the lesion load on different anatomical regions of the brain with MS using DIR, fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) sequences. A total of 97 MS patients were included in our retrospective study, confirmed by neurologist. The patients were randomly selected from the major hospital in Saudi Arabia. All images were obtained using 3T Scanner (Siemens Skyra). The images from the DIR, FLAIR, and T2WI sequence were compared on axial planes with identical anatomic position and the number of lesions was assigned to their anatomical region. Results Comparing the lesion load measurement at various brain anatomical regions showed a significant difference among those three methods (p < 0.05). Conclusion DIR is a valuable MRI sequence for better delineation, greater contrast measurements and the increasing total number of MS lesions in MRI, compared with FLAIR, and T2WI and DIR revealed more intracortical lesions as well; therefore, in MS patients, it is recommended to add DIR sequence in daily routine imaging sequences.

The use of Mandarin language in Dakwah is remotely practiced by Malaysians. This is because majority of Malaysians especially Muslims are more comfortable using their native language which is Malay language and English as communication language used with mad’u from various backgrounds of religion and language. In fact, there are some more likey to practice dakwah and islah amongs only Muslims. Thus, this study is about a few dakwah movements in Malaysia that using Mandarin as communication language in dakwah movements. The research methodology used is qualitative from documented or written sourceS. The findings show that Mandarin language is an appropriate and relevant medium in dakwah communication because the number of Chinese people in Malaysia is also more than the Indians. The implication of the study found that there are two aspects the using of Mandarin language in Dakwah which are as preparation to preacher or daie to deal with Chinese mad’u; Mandarin as a dakwah communication language in facing Chinese mad’u through their organized activities and programs.

Advancement of Information and communication technology (ICT) rapidly transform many sectors and it does give and impact also to the educational field. Ministry of Education Malaysia starts to plan the curriculum to include ICT and teacher starts exploring different method and teaching style to develop students higher order thinking skills. Teacher plays an important role in designing lesson to integrate ICT as it will give effect to students’ attitude in learning. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of ICT towards students’ attitude. The methodology of study utilized a systematic document analysis technique where issues related to effect ICT towards student attitude which have given impact to the teachers’ and students’ behavior in the form of any reference are analyzed. SAMR model will show that there is different level of degree of ICT integration that teacher can use and implement in class. Results shows that when ICT is use in class it will give an advantage in terms of student performances, motivation and efficiency. The student and classroom environment itself will be dynamic, active listening, collaborative learning, interactivity and communication will take place. Maximizing ICT potential can create and enhance learning to take place more effectively and transforming from teacher-centered to student-centered learning which are in line with the 21st century goals.

The unemployment among university students become main issues in Malaysia since the increasing number of umnemployed graduates from higher education institution. In order to minimize this issue, entrepreneurship become one of the main solutions especially for higher education institution in Malaysia. This including the Kolej Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Ismail Petra (KIAS), Kelantan, Malaysia which provided entrepreneurship as main core subjects for their program of studies. Thus, this research tends to examine the factors that influence entrepreneurial intention among diploma student at Kolej Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Ismail Petra (KIAS) by using The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Quantitative research design has been where 100 set of questionnaires has been distributed to target respondents in order to get the necessary information. All data were panalyzed using SmartPLS software. The finding shows that attitude and entrepreneurial education are significant towards entrepreneurship intention. Therefore, this study is expected to provide a significant insight towards higher institutions, public as well as government about entrepreneurial intention.

IntroductionThe hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a blood-borne virus that can be transmitted by percutaneous and mucocutaneous contact with infected bodily fluid. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are more exposed to HBV infection. They must have a thorough understanding of HBV infection since they can contract and spread the virus. In this study, we systematically reviewed all published evidence on the seroprevalence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among HCWs. and synthesize evidence on the association between knowledge and awareness with HBV infection.MethodsWe searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Scopus for studies reporting on HBV seroprevalence from January 1997 to September 2021 among healthcare workers. We used random-effects meta-analyses to estimate the pool prevalence of HBV infection.ResultsWe identified 25 studies that met our inclusion criteria, with data on 10,043 adults from 11 countries and two regions: Africa and Asia. The overall seroprevalence of HBV was 5.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.6%), with Africa reporting higher estimates (5.0%, 95% CI 3.7%) than Asia population (4.0%, 95% CI 1.9%). The highest pooled prevalence estimate in African countries came from studies published in the Cameroon region (8.0%, 95% CI 5–10%) while the lowest came from Ethiopia (4.0%, 95% CI 2.6%). The overall seroprevalence estimates in the African population were significantly higher than those in the Asian group. Studies in Africa found that the average knowledge and seroprevalence were 1.4% and 11.0%, respectively where, eight studies (53.3%) reported good knowledge and seven studies (46.7%) reported average knowledge. In Asia, two studies (40.0%) reported good knowledge, one study (20.0%) reporting average knowledge, and two studies (40.0%) reporting poor knowledge. African studies demonstrated good knowledge despite the fact that their HBV infection rate was higher than 6.7%.ConclusionAfrica and Asia have the highest seroprevalence of HBV infection. Improving the comparability of epidemiological and clinical studies constitutes an important step forward. Purpose: Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an emerging transboundary notifiable viral disease by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). A member of Capripoxvirus within the Poxviridae family, LSD virus (LSDV) caused loss of production, infertility, damage to hides and mortality, leading to significant social-economic implications. Originated from the Africa continent, LSD has never been reported in Malaysia before but recently detected in several areas in Asia including Thailand. In May 2021, reports and samples of unknown skin disease in dairy cattle were presented for laboratory diagnosis to confirm provisional LSD clinical diagnosis. This study aims to molecular detects and confirms the causative agent to enable subsequent control measures to be applied. Methods & Materials: Three out of 11 dairy cattle from a dairy farm in Perak were showing clinical signs with nodules spotted on the skin of animals. Skin nodule (n=3) and whole blood (n=11) were sampled and tested for LSDV by PCR to confirm the presence of LSDV nucleic acids. The amplicon obtained was subsequently sequenced by Sanger sequencing. Results: All three skin nodule samples were positive for Capripoxvirus by PCR. The nucleotide sequence homology analysis indicates high nucleotide homology to LSDV, confirming the first molecular detection of LSDV in Malaysia. Conversely, all blood samples were negative for Capripoxvirus by PCR. Conclusion: We detected and confirmed the LSD outbreak in Malaysia. Our result indicates transboundary expansion of LSD in the region. This emphasized the importance of tighten border control and lab preparedness to prevent disease introduction and rapid detection of disease. Following this, surveillance, stamping out of the infected animals, suspended the import of animals from infected country and animal movement were carried out and imposed to contain and control the spreading of LSD.

(1) Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of prototype handheld ultrasound compared to automated breast ultrasound, according to the fifth edition of BI-RADS categorization, among females with positive lumps. (2) Methods: A total of 1004 lesions in 162 participants who underwent both prototype handheld ultrasound and automated breast ultrasound were included. Two radiologists and a sonographer independently evaluated the sonographic features of each lesion according to the fifth BI-RADS edition. The kappa coefficient (κ) was calculated for each BI-RADS descriptor and final assessment category. The cross-tabulation was performed to see whether there were differences between the ABUS and prototype HHUS results. Specificity and sensitivity were evaluated and compared using the McNamar test. (3) Results: ABUS and prototype HHUS observers found the same number of breast lesions in the 324 breasts of the 162 respondents. There was no significant difference in the mean lesion size, with a maximum mean length dimension of 0.48 ± 0.33 cm. The assessment of the lesion’s shape, orientation, margin, echo pattern, posterior acoustic features, and calcification was obtained with good to excellent agreements between ABUS and prototype HHUS observers (κ = 0.70–1.0). There was absolutely no significant difference between ABUS and prototype HHUS in assessment of lesion except for lesion orientation p = 0.00. Diagnostic accuracy (99.8% and 97.7–98.9%), sensitivity (99.5% and 98.0–99.0%), specificity (99.8% and 99.6–99.8%), positive predictive value (98.1% and 90.3–96.2%), negative predictive value (90.0% and 84.4–88.7%), and areas under the curve (0.98 and 0.83–0.92; p < 0.05) were not significantly different between ABUS and prototype HHUS observers. (4) Conclusion: According to the fifth BI-RADS edition, automated breast ultrasound is not statistically significantly different from prototype handheld ultrasound with regard to interobserver variability and diagnostic performance.

A key element in ensuring successful immunization is the efficient delivery of vaccines. However, poor immunogenicity and adverse inflammatory immunogenic reactions make the establishment of an efficient vaccine delivery method a challenging task. The delivery of vaccines has been performed via a variety of delivery methods, including natural-polymer-based carriers that are relatively biocompatible and have low toxicity. The incorporation of adjuvants or antigens into biomaterial-based immunizations has demonstrated better immune response than formulations that just contain the antigen. This system may enable antigen-mediated immunogenicity and shelter and transport the cargo vaccine or antigen to the appropriate target organ. In this regard, this work reviews the recent applications of natural polymer composites from different sources, such as animals, plants, and microbes, in vaccine delivery systems.

Natural polymers have received a great deal of interest for their potential use in the encapsulation and transportation of pharmaceuticals and other bioactive compounds for disease treatment. In this perspective, the drug delivery systems (DDS) constructed by representative natural polymers from animals (gelatin and hyaluronic acid), plants (pectin and starch), and microbes (Xanthan gum and Dextran) are provided. In order to enhance the efficiency of polymers in DDS by delivering the medicine to the right location, reducing the medication’s adverse effects on neighboring organs or tissues, and controlling the medication’s release to stop the cycle of over- and under-dosing, the incorporation of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles with the polymers has engaged the most consideration due to their rare characteristics, such as easy separation, superparamagnetism, and high surface area. This review is designed to report the recent progress of natural polymeric Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles in drug delivery applications, based on different polymers’ origins.
