The biological study of Carpocoris coreanus Distant carried out in March 2011 on wild mustard Brassica nigra (L.) at 25 Cº and 33% R.H. It has been found that the overwintered adult in the hibernated region of stink bug C. coreanus began their activity in the March of 2011, which overwinters inside the adult stage. The mean period of pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition were reached 8.2, 34.8 and 4 days, respectively. The average of adult longevity on mustard was 37.2 days for male and 46.6 days for female. The egg is barrel, brownish when newly laid, usually deposited in masses egg mass number of C. coreanus in this study averaged 8 masses/female, with an average 15.7 eggs/mass. The mean incubation period was 12 days, and egg hatching ratio approached 79.4%. The nymphs completed their development within five instars, with the mean period of 6.5±0.83, 7.8±1.15, 7.3±0.66, 9.3±0.66 and 12.8±0.96 days for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th nympal instars, respectively. It was found that stink bug C. coreanus has one generation per year.

Objective: The objective was to assess the validity and reliability of a translated Arabic language version of the pharmacy survey on patient safety culture released by the United States Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in 2012 and to utilize this to assess staff attitudes and perceptions of the patient safety culture in hospital pharmacies of Kuwait. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional timeframe. Data were gained from three of the largest public hospital pharmacies and three of the largest private hospital pharmacies in Kuwait. The primary and secondary outcome measures were descriptive statistics, internal consistency, construct validity, model fit, and calculation of the positive response rate for all composites and items. Results: The results demonstrated that 9 of the 11 composites had a Cronbach’s alpha (α) of >0.7, and all composites had factor loadings above 0.6. The standardized root mean residual score appropriately fitted the data with a value of 0.072. The intercorrelations among the patient safety composites ranged from 0.29 to 0.83. The proportion of pharmacy staff who categorized the grade of patient safety as “Good,” Very good,” or “Excellent” was 93%. Conclusion: The Arabic version of the pharmacy survey on patient safety culture questionnaire indicated suitable levels of reliability and validity. Also, the results demonstrated that the pharmacy staff surveyed in Kuwait have a positive perception of patient safety culture in their organizations.

Abstract Peptic ulcer is the most common GIT disorder with a prevalence of 2%, peaking around the age of 70 years. Laparoscopic repair of perforated peptic ulcer began to evolve and replace the ordinary upper laparotomy. We studied 47 patients suffering from perforated duodenal or gastric ulcer in Al-Mawanee General Hospital in Basrah in the period 2014-2017, the patients were categorized into 2 groups: 1st group(24 patients) managed laparoscopically and the 2nd group (23 patients) managed by open approach. Perforation found to occur more with duodenal ulcer (29 pt. 61.70%) and more in male patients (26 pt. 55.33%). The peak perforation seen in age group >60 years and the commonest risk factors was the NSAIDs usage. Operative time was insignificantly longer in laparoscopic approach. However, the laparoscopic approach has less post operative pain and less overall complications (4 pt. 16.6% vs. 8 pt. 34.7%). In conclusion, laparoscopic repair of perforated peptic ulcer is a feasible operation and considered promising with less postoperative pain, less postoperative complications and better cosmetic results.

Abstract Thyroid gland is highly vascularized organ, so good hemostasis during total or sub-total thyroidectomy is crucial to decrease the complications and to improve the outcome. This study aimed to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using harmonic scalpel device in comparison with conventional hemostasis for total and subtotal thyroidectomy in terms of operative time, nerves injury, post-operative blood loss, hematoma development, hypocalcemia and length of hospital stay. This study included 80 patients who underwent total or subtotal thyroidectomy. They were divided into two groups according to the type of hemostasis: conventional hemostasis group and harmonic hemostasis group. Different diseases were included (multinodular goiter, toxic goiter and malignant diseases). The results showed that time of operation was significantly shorter in the harmonic hemostasis group (79.52±14.98 min) than conventional hemostasis group (100.92 ±10.64 min) with p value 0.0001, also post-operative blood loss was lower in harmonic hemostasis group (52.5±26.23 ml) than conventional hemostasis group (75.13±17.8 ml) with p value 0.0001. Other outcome such as recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, post-operative hematoma, post-operative hypocalcemia and length of hospital stay did not show significant difference between the groups. In conclusion, using harmonic scalpel device in total or subtotal thyroidectomy reduced the operative time and post-operative blood loss, without any change in the incidence of nerve injury, hematoma, hypocalcemia and the length of hospital stay.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has created one of the largest global health crises in almost a century. Although the current rate of Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections has decreased significantly, the long-term outlook of COVID-19 remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with the mortality rate still substantially surpassing even that recorded for influenza viruses. The continued emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs), including multiple heavily mutated Omicron sub-variants, has prolonged the COVID-19 pandemic and underscores the urgent need for a next-generation vaccine that will protect from multiple SARS-CoV-2 VOCs. Methods: We designed a multi-epitope-based coronavirus vaccine that incorporated B, CD4+, and CD8+ T-cell epitopes conserved among all known SARS-CoV-2 VOCs and selectively recognized by CD8+ and CD4+ T-cells from asymptomatic COVID-19 patients irrespective of VOC infection. The safety, immunogenicity, and cross-protective immunity of this pan-variant SARS-CoV-2 vaccine were studied against six VOCs using an innovative triple transgenic h-ACE-2-HLA-A2/DR mouse model. Results: The pan-variant SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (i) is safe, (ii) induces high frequencies of lung-resident functional CD8+ and CD4+ TEM and TRM cells, and (iii) provides robust protection against morbidity and virus replication. COVID-19-related lung pathology and death were caused by six SARS-CoV-2 VOCs: Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Gamma or P1 (B.1.1.28.1), Delta (lineage B.1.617.2), and Omicron (B.1.1.529). Conclusion: A multi-epitope pan-variant SARS-CoV-2 vaccine bearing conserved human B- and T- cell epitopes from structural and non-structural SARS-CoV-2 antigens induced cross-protective immunity that facilitated virus clearance, and reduced morbidity, COVID-19-related lung pathology, and death caused by multiple SARS-CoV-2 VOCs. Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat that contributes to substantial neonatal mortality. Bangladesh has reported some of the highest rates of AMR among bacteria causing neonatal sepsis. As AMR colonization among newborns can predispose to infection with these bacteria, we aimed to characterize the frequency of and risk factors for colonization of mothers and newborns during hospitalization for delivery. Methods: We enrolled pregnant women presenting for delivery to a tertiary care hospital in Faridpur, Bangladesh. We collected vaginal and rectal swabs from mothers pre- and post-delivery, rectal swabs from newborns, and swabs from the hospital environment. Swabs were plated on agars selective for extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase producing bacteria (ESBL-PB) and carbapenem-resistant bacteria (CRB). We performed logistic regression to determine factors associated with ESBL-PB/CRB colonization. Results: We enrolled 177 women and their newborns during February-October 2020. Prior to delivery, 77% of mothers were colonized with ESBL-PB and 15% with CRB. 79% of women underwent cesarean deliveries (C-section). 98% of women received antibiotics. Following delivery, 98% of mothers and 89% of newborns were colonized with ESBL-PB and 89% of mothers and 72% of newborns with CRB. Of 290 environmental samples, 77% were positive for ESBL-PB and 69% for CRB. Maternal pre-delivery colonization was associated with hospitalization during pregnancy (RR for ESBL-PB 1.24, 95% CI 1.10–1.40; CRB 2.46, 95% CI 1.39–4.37). Maternal post-delivery and newborn colonization were associated with C-section (RR for maternal CRB 1.31, 95% CI 1.08–1.59; newborn ESBL-PB 1.34, 95% CI 1.09–1.64; newborn CRB 1.73, 95% CI 1.20–2.47). Conclusions: In this study, we observed high rates of colonization with ESBL-PB/CRB among mothers and newborns, with pre-delivery colonization linked to prior healthcare exposure. Our results demonstrate this trend may be driven by intense use of antibiotics, frequent C-sections, and a contaminated hospital environment. These findings highlight that greater attention should be given to the use of perinatal antibiotics, improved surgical stewardship for C-sections, and infection prevention practices in healthcare settings to reduce the high prevalence of colonization with AMR organisms.
