The oceanic neodymium isotopic composition (hereafter expressed as εNd) is modeled for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) using the coarse resolution Ocean Global Circulation Model NEMO-ORCA2°. This study focuses on the impact of changes in the overturning cell and circulation patterns between LGM and Holocene on εNd in the Atlantic basin. Three different LGM freshwater forcing experiments are performed to test the variability in εNd oceanic distribution as a function of ocean circulation. Highly distinct representations of ocean circulation are generated in the three simulations, which drive significant differences in εNd, particularly in deep waters of the western part of the basin. However, mean Atlantic LGM εNd values are remain half a unit more radiogenic than for the modern control run. A fourth experiment shows that changes in Nd sources and bathymetry drive a shift in the εNd signature of Northern end-members (NADW or GNAIW glacial equivalent) that is sufficient to explain the shift in mean εNd during our LGM simulations. None of our three LGM circulation scenarios gives a better agreement with the existing εNd paleo-data, as the model fails in reproducing the dynamical features of the area. Therefore, this study cannot indicate the likelihood of a given LGM oceanic circulation scenario. Rather, our modeling results highlight the need for data from western Atlantic deep waters, where the εNd gradient in the three LGM scenarios is the most important (up to 3 εNd). This would also aid more precise conclusions concerning the north end-member εNd signature evolution, and thus the potential use of εNd as a tracer of past oceanic circulation. Abstract: For the first time, modeling of the neodymium (Nd) isotopic composition (expressed as ε Nd) is performed in an Ocean Global Circulation Model (OPA-ORCA2.0 model). In the interest of simplicity, Nd concentration is not explicitly included and ε Nd is modeled as a passive tracer. Recent studies suggest that dissolved/particulate exchanges between continental margin sediments and seawater (termed boundary exchange, BE), could be the dominant source-sink terms that determine the distribution of neodymium isotopes in the global ocean. To test this hypothesis, we only included this BE source-sink term in the model. BE was parameterized as a relaxing term that forces ε Nd of seawater to the isotopic composition of the continental margin over a characteristic exchange time. Sensitivity tests were made using different exchange times and parameterizations. The model reproduces most of the general trends of ε Nd composition in seawater at global scale (inter-basin gradient, composition of some of the main water masses). These results suggest that BE process may account for the major sources and sinks of oceanic Nd, while indicating that the characteristic time of interaction between seawater and margins varies from about half a year in surface waters to several years at depth. The disparities between the model and observations might reflect the typical shortcomings of utilizing a coarse resolution ocean model circulation fields or neglected sources of neodymium such as dissolution of aeolian inputs or dissolved river loads. Abstract: An extensive compilation of published Nd isotopic values has been made in order to establish a database and a map of the isotopic composition of Nd of the world coasts. Both the database and the map are set out here, together with the way we interpolated the data to make the map. The margin Nd isotopic signatures vary from non-radiogenic values around the Atlantic Ocean to radiogenic values around the Pacific consistent with the trajectory of the “conveyor belt” global circulation, reinforcing the hypothesis that the exchange of Nd along the margins could play a significant role in driving the oceanic distribution of this tracer. Each year, an average of 45 tropical cyclones affect coastal areas and potentially impact forests. The proportion of the most intense cyclones has increased over the past four decades and is predicted to continue to do so. Yet, it remains uncertain how topographical exposure and tree characteristics can mediate the damage caused by increasing wind speed. Here, we compiled empirical data on the damage caused by 11 cyclones occurring over the past 40 years, from 74 forest plots representing tropical regions worldwide, encompassing field data for 22,176 trees and 815 species. We reconstructed the wind structure of those tropical cyclones to estimate the maximum sustained wind speed (MSW) and wind direction at the studied plots. Then, we used a causal inference framework combined with Bayesian generalised linear mixed models to understand and quantify the causal effects of MSW, topographical exposure to wind (EXP), tree size (DBH) and species wood density (ρ) on the proportion of damaged trees at the community level, and on the probability of snapping or uprooting at the tree level. The probability of snapping or uprooting at the tree level and, hence, the proportion of damaged trees at the community level, increased with increasing MSW, and with increasing EXP accentuating the damaging effects of cyclones, in particular at higher wind speeds. Higher ρ decreased the probability of snapping and to a lesser extent of uprooting. Larger trees tended to have lower probabilities of snapping but increased probabilities of uprooting. Importantly, the effect of ρ decreasing the probabilities of snapping was more marked for smaller than larger trees and was further accentuated at higher MSW. Our work emphasises how local topography, tree size and species wood density together mediate cyclone damage to tropical forests, facilitating better predictions of the impacts of such disturbances in an increasingly windier world. Abstract The Tyrrhenian circulation, driven by the interplay of transport at its main straits and local climate, presents a marked seasonal variability. In this work we investigate the role of the horizontal resolution of the atmospheric fields in the long-term seasonal variability of the Tyrrhenian Sea circulation. We adopt the eddy-permitting ocean circulation model NEMO-MED12. Simulations cover the 1997–2008 period and are driven by atmospheric fields from PROMES regional climate model with a horizontal resolution of 50 km and 25 km. Given that this is the first time that PROMES variables have been used to run ocean simulations, we first evaluate the overall performance of this setup taking into consideration the entire model domain, which covers the whole Mediterranean Sea. We show that PROMES variables allow a good representation of the Mediterranean boundary fluxes and water masses. Focusing on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the comparison of the model results to altimeter data shows that the main features of the seasonal variability of the Tyrrhenian large-scale circulation are well captured regardless of the resolution of the atmospheric fields. However, the prescription of 25 km resolution atmospheric fields improves substantially the representation of the dynamical structures resolved by the model. Based on our results, we update intermediate-depth circulation patterns, very little studied so far. We show that changes observed with 25 km fields are not due to a better simulation of transport across Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily straits, but rather to the improved representation of winds. This work assesses the sensitivity of the offshore wind energy density and production to SST biases and air-sea feedbacks along the French and Spanish coast in the North-Western Mediterranean. It makes use of a set of three 20-years simulations from atmosphere stand-alone and atmosphere/ocean coupled models. In this numerical experiment, the effects of SST bias and air-sea feedbacks are isolated without any interference with other sources of error and uncertainty propagation, meaning that the same model and hence the same physics are used, all other things being equal. This study shows that the effects of SST bias or air-sea feedbacks on wind energy density and production estimation can reach up to 10% and 5%, respectively. Especially, accounting for air-sea coupled processes on sub-monthly time scales weakens systematically the energy density and production by 6.5% and 2.4% with respect to the configuration where these effects are neglected. The relative variability over the 20 years of simulation does not exceed 20% so the impact of air-sea feedbacks is very robust in time in terms of wind energy density and production assessment. Uncertainties up to 6.5 and 2.5% in the evaluation of the potential in terms of wind energy density and production potential can have severe consequences on the whole industry by lowering the projects profitability. This study shows that the effects of SST bias and air-sea feedbacks usually extend vertically up to the hub-height but their magnitude depends on the stability of the atmosphere. This study concludes that reducing the SST bias at the lower boundary of numerical atmospheric models and accounting for rapid interactions and feedbacks between the ocean and the atmosphere are key to improve the reliability of offshore wind energy density and production assessment. The Earth system model EC-Earth3 for contributions to CMIP6 is documented here, with its flexible coupling framework, major model configurations, a methodology for ensuring the simulations are comparable across different high-performance computing (HPC) systems, and with the physical performance of base configurations over the historical period. The variety of possible configurations and sub-models reflects the broad interests in the EC-Earth community. EC-Earth3 key performance metrics demonstrate physical behavior and biases well within the frame known from recent CMIP models. With improved physical and dynamic features, new Earth system model (ESM) components, community tools, and largely improved physical performance compared to the CMIP5 version, EC-Earth3 represents a clear step forward for the only European community ESM. Droughts and heatwaves in the Mediterranean can induce plant activity decline and severe wildfires leading to considerable economic, social and environmental damages. This study aims at statistically quantifying the isolated and combined impacts of these extreme events based on a combination of regional land surface-atmosphere modeling and satellite observations of surface properties (MODIS). A simulation by the RegIPSL coupled regional model (ORCHIDEE-WRF) over the 1979–2016 period in the Western Mediterranean is used to identify heatwaves and droughts. After an evaluation of the model performance against surface observations of temperature and precipitation, a spatio-temporal analysis is conducted using specific indicators of extreme events: Percentile Limit Anomalies (PLA) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The impact on vegetation and wildfires is assessed using the MODIS observations of Leaf Area Index (LAI), burned area (BA) and fire radiative power (FRP), clustered by simulated extreme weather events. Due to water stress, droughts lead to significant biomass decrease (− 10 % LAI on average and reaching − 23 % in some areas). The isolated effect of heatwaves is smaller (∼ − 3 % LAI) so that the combined effect is dominated by the impact of droughts. Heatwaves and droughts significantly exacerbate wildfire regimes. Through synergistic effects, simultaneous droughts and heatwaves increase BA and FRP by 2.1 and 2.9 times, respectively, compared to normal conditions. By reducing biomass, droughts slightly decrease fuel availability. Simulations from seven global coupled climate models performed at high and standard resolution as part of the high resolution model intercomparison project (HighResMIP) are analyzed to study deep ocean mixing in the Labrador Sea and the impact of increased horizontal resolution. The representation of convection varies strongly among models. Compared to observations from ARGO-floats and the EN4 data set, most models substantially overestimate deep convection in the Labrador Sea. In four out of five models, all four using the NEMO-ocean model, increasing the ocean resolution from 1° to 1/4° leads to increased deep mixing in the Labrador Sea. Increasing the atmospheric resolution has a smaller effect than increasing the ocean resolution. Simulated convection in the Labrador Sea is mainly governed by the release of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere and by the vertical stratification of the water masses in the Labrador Sea in late autumn. Models with stronger sub-polar gyre circulation have generally higher surface salinity in the Labrador Sea and a deeper convection. While the high-resolution models show more realistic ocean stratification in the Labrador Sea than the standard resolution models, they generally overestimate the convection. The results indicate that the representation of sub-grid scale mixing processes might be imperfect in the models and contribute to the biases in deep convection. Since in more than half of the models, the Labrador Sea convection is important for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), this raises questions about the future behavior of the AMOC in the models. In this paper, we present and evaluate the skill of an EC-Earth3.3 decadal prediction system contributing to the Decadal Climate Prediction Project – Component A (DCPP-A). This prediction system is capable of skilfully simulating past global mean surface temperature variations at interannual and decadal forecast times as well as the local surface temperature in regions such as the tropical Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and most of the continental areas, although most of the skill comes from the representation of the external radiative forcings. A benefit of initialization in the predictive skill is evident in some areas of the tropical Pacific and North Atlantic oceans in the first forecast years, an added value that is mostly confined to the south-east tropical Pacific and the eastern subpolar North Atlantic at the longest forecast times (6–10 years). The central subpolar North Atlantic shows poor predictive skill and a detrimental effect of initialization that leads to a quick collapse in Labrador Sea convection, followed by a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and excessive local sea ice growth. The shutdown in Labrador Sea convection responds to a gradual increase in the local density stratification in the first years of the forecast, ultimately related to the different paces at which surface and subsurface temperature and salinity drift towards their preferred mean state. This transition happens rapidly at the surface and more slowly in the subsurface, where, by the 10th forecast year, the model is still far from the typical mean states in the corresponding ensemble of historical simulations with EC-Earth3. Thus, our study highlights the Labrador Sea as a region that can be sensitive to full-field initialization and hamper the final prediction skill, a problem that can be alleviated by improving the regional model biases through model development and by identifying more optimal initialization strategies. We present a new framework for global ocean–sea-ice model simulations based on phase 2 of the Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (OMIP-2), making use of the surface dataset based on the Japanese 55-year atmospheric reanalysis for driving ocean–sea-ice models (JRA55-do). We motivate the use of OMIP-2 over the framework for the first phase of OMIP (OMIP-1), previously referred to as the Coordinated Ocean–ice Reference Experiments (COREs), via the evaluation of OMIP-1 and OMIP-2 simulations from 11 state-of-the-science global ocean–sea-ice models. In the present evaluation, multi-model ensemble means and spreads are calculated separately for the OMIP-1 and OMIP-2 simulations and overall performance is assessed considering metrics commonly used by ocean modelers. Both OMIP-1 and OMIP-2 multi-model ensemble ranges capture observations in more than 80 % of the time and region for most metrics, with the multi-model ensemble spread greatly exceeding the difference between the means of the two datasets. Many features, including some climatologically relevant ocean circulation indices, are very similar between OMIP-1 and OMIP-2 simulations, and yet we could also identify key qualitative improvements in transitioning from OMIP-1 to OMIP-2. For example, the sea surface temperatures of the OMIP-2 simulations reproduce the observed global warming during the 1980s and 1990s, as well as the warming slowdown in the 2000s and the more recent accelerated warming, which were absent in OMIP-1, noting that the last feature is part of the design of OMIP-2 because OMIP-1 forcing stopped in 2009. A negative bias in the sea-ice concentration in summer of both hemispheres in OMIP-1 is significantly reduced in OMIP-2. The overall reproducibility of both seasonal and interannual variations in sea surface temperature and sea surface height (dynamic sea level) is improved in OMIP-2. These improvements represent a new capability of the OMIP-2 framework for evaluating process-level responses using simulation results. Regarding the sensitivity of individual models to the change in forcing, the models show well-ordered responses for the metrics that are directly forced, while they show less organized responses for those that require complex model adjustments. Many of the remaining common model biases may be attributed either to errors in representing important processes in ocean–sea-ice models, some of which are expected to be reduced by using finer horizontal and/or vertical resolutions, or to shared biases and limitations in the atmospheric forcing. In particular, further efforts are warranted to resolve remaining issues in OMIP-2 such as the warm bias in the upper layer, the mismatch between the observed and simulated variability of heat content and thermosteric sea level before 1990s, and the erroneous representation of deep and bottom water formations and circulations. We suggest that such problems can be resolved through collaboration between those developing models (including parameterizations) and forcing datasets. The Current FeedBack (CFB) to the atmosphere simply represents the influence of the surface oceanic currents on near-surface wind and surface stress. As the CFB has a significant influence on the oceanic circulation, it is crucial to implement it properly in a coupled ocean–atmosphere model. In this study, we first detail the modifications to be implemented into atmospheric models to account for the CFB. In the computation of air–sea fluxes, the relative winds, i.e., the difference between the near-surface winds and the surface oceanic currents, instead of absolute winds have to be used (Modification M1). However, because of the implicit treatment of the bottom boundary condition in most atmospheric models, the use of relative winds also involves a modification of the tridiagonal problem associated with the discretization of the vertical turbulent viscosity (Modification M2). Secondly, we show both analytically and using global coupled simulations that omitting M2 leads to a large underestimation of the surface stress curl response to the CFB and, subsequently, of the coupling coefficient between mesoscale surface stress curl and surface current vorticity. As a consequence, the dampening of the mesoscale activity induced by the CFB is strongly reduced (by a minimum a factor of 2 or more). The practical implementation of the CFB must be done carefully in the atmospheric component of a coupled model in order to avoid a large underestimation of the CFB effect on the oceanic circulation. • In coupled models the Current Feedback affects both the wind-stress norm and orientation. • Modification of the bulk formulation insures to consider the effect on the stress norm. • Modification of the discretization of turbulent vertical mixing term is also needed. • The latter is necessary to properly compute the wind-stress orientation. • By omitting it, the dampening of the oceanic mesoscale activity is underestimated. Vb-cyclones are extratropical cyclones propagating from the Western Mediterranean Sea and traveling across the Eastern Alps into the Baltic region. With these cyclones, extreme precipitation over Central Europe potentially triggers significant flood events. Understanding the prediction ability of Vb-cyclones would lower risks from adverse impacts. This study analyzes the robustness of an atmosphere–ocean regional coupled model, including interactive models for the Mediterranean Sea (MED) and North and Baltic Seas (NORDIC) in reproducing observed Vb-cyclone characteristics. We use the regional climate model (RCM) COSMO-CLM (CCLM) in stand-alone and coupled with the ocean model NEMO configurations for the EURO-CORDEX domain from 1979 to 2014, driven by the ERA-Interim reanalysis. Sea surface temperature (SST) is evaluated to demonstrate the stability and reliability of the coupled configurations. Compared to observations, simulated SSTs show biases (~ 1 °C), especially during winter and summer. Generally, all model configurations are able to replicate Vb-cyclones, their trajectories, and associated precipitation fields. Cyclone trajectories are comparably well simulated with the coupled models, as with the stand-alone simulation which is driven by the reanalysis SST in the MED and NORDIC seas. The cyclone intensity shows large deviations from reanalysis reference in the simulations with the interactive MED Sea, and smallest with CCLM. Precipitation characteristics are similarly simulated in the coupled and stand-alone (with reanalysis SST) simulations. The results suggest that our coupled RCM is useful for studying the impacts of highly resolved and interactively simulated SSTs on European extreme events and regional climate, a crucial prerequisite for understanding future climate conditions. Abstract A performance study of seven regional ocean configurations based on NEMO has been carried out for the Adriatic Sea over a common period (1980–2012). Assessed models differ in resolution, model physics, atmospheric forcing (forced vs. coupled models) and river discharges imposed within the Adriatic Sea. Models have been evaluated on the long-term temperature and salinity measurements in all of the Adriatic sub-basins, in particular within dense water collectors (Jabuka Pit and South Adriatic Pit) and dense water formation sites (northern and southern Adriatic). Adriatic-wide salinity content is mostly linked to the proper introduction of the overall water budget, rather than to the local river forcing. Forced models mostly overestimate temperature and salinity values. On average, coupled models better reproduce the thermohaline properties and processes, in particular the Adriatic-Ionian Bimodal Oscillating System (BiOS) reversals and its decadal variability. Wintertime heat losses are playing major role in defining the Adriatic Deep Water (ADW) transport rates in coupled models, while in forced models preconditioning in salinity is the most important factor. Further on, increase of resolution of the atmospheric forcing results in more realistic ocean behaviour, including dense water formation (DWF) in the complex coastal northern Adriatic. However, all models have large temperature biases and lower deep stratification at the dense water collector sites, indicating overall underrepresentation of the Adriatic DWF. Consequently, mixed-layer depth in the southern Adriatic is overestimated, reaching the bottom during some years. Ocean model resolution and river forcing seem to play a second-order role in defining the overall Adriatic-Ionian thermohaline properties, while inclusion of aerosol trend only slightly modified the BiOS reproduction. For now, the question about future sea level change in the Mediterranean remains a challenge. Previous climate modelling attempts to estimate future sea level change in the Mediterranean did not meet a consensus. The low resolution of CMIP-type models prevents an accurate representation of important small scales processes acting over the Mediterranean region. For this reason among others, the use of high resolution regional ocean modelling has been recommended in literature to address the question of ongoing and future Mediterranean sea level change in response to climate change or greenhouse gases emissions. Also, it has been shown that east Atlantic sea level variability is the dominant driver of the Mediterranean variability at interannual and interdecadal scales. However, up to now, long-term regional simulations of the Mediterranean Sea do not integrate the full sea level information from the Atlantic, which is a substantial shortcoming when analysing Mediterranean sea level response. In the present study we analyse different approaches followed by state-of-the-art regional climate models to simulate Mediterranean sea level variability. Additionally we present a new simulation which incorporates improved information of Atlantic sea level forcing at the lateral boundary. We evaluate the skills of the different simulations in the frame of long-term hindcast simulations spanning from 1980 to 2012 analysing sea level variability from seasonal to multidecadal scales. Results from the new simulation show a substantial improvement in the modelled Mediterranean sea level signal. This confirms that Mediterranean mean sea level is strongly influenced by the Atlantic conditions, and thus suggests that the quality of the information in the lateral boundary conditions (LBCs) is crucial for the good modelling of Mediterranean sea level. We also found that the regional differences inside the basin, that are induced by circulation changes, are model-dependent and thus not affected by the LBCs. Finally, we argue that a correct configuration of LBCs in the Atlantic should be used for future Mediterranean simulations, which cover hindcast period, but also for scenarios. This study evaluates the Mediterranean Sea heat budget components from a set of forced and coupled simulations performed in the frame of the Med-CORDEX project. The simulations use regional climate system models (RCSMs) dedicated to the Mediterranean area and driven by the ERA40/ERA-Interim reanalyses. The study focuses on the period 1980-2010. Interannual variations of the average net heat flux at the sea surface are consistent among models but the spread in the mean values is large (from −4.8 to +2.2 Wm−2) with the coupled models showing the lowest heat loss from the sea. For the heat flux at the Strait of Gibraltar both interannual variations and mean values show a large intermodel spread. The basin average temperature shows positive trends with highest values in the coupled models; it also shows interannual variations that are in good agreement with observations. The heat content rate is calculated based on the derivative of the average temperature and is found to be significantly correlated for most models with the net heat flux at the sea surface (average correlation ~0.5) but not with the net heat flux through the Strait of Gibraltar (average correlation ~0.2), suggesting that in the considered RCSMs the interannual variability of the heat content rate is mainly driven by the surface heat fluxes. The resemblance between the simulated and observed heat content rates is stronger in the forced models than in the coupled ones. This is explained by the stronger constraint applied to the forced models by the use of the surface temperature relaxation to observations. The temperature of the outflowing water through the Strait of Gibraltar shows positive and significant trends, also higher in the coupled models. It is suggested that the Mediterranean Sea warming found in most models and in particular in the coupled ones, induces a change of the hydrographic conditions that affects the Strait of Gibraltar. The region of Valencia in Spain has historically been affected by heavy precipitation events (HPEs). These HPEs are known to be modulated by the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Balearic Sea. Using an atmosphere-ocean regional climate model, we show that more than 70 % of the HPEs in the region of Valencia present a SST cooling larger than the monthly trend in the Northwestern Mediterranean before the HPEs. This is linked to the breaking of a Rossby wave preceding the HPEs: a ridge-trough pattern at mid-levels centered over western France associated with a low-level depression in the Gulf of Genoa precedes the generation of a cut-off low over southern Spain with a surface depression over the Alboran Sea in the lee of the Atlas. This latter situation is favourable to the advection of warm and moist air towards the Mediterranean Spanish coast, possibly leading to HPEs. The depression in the Gulf of Genoa generates intense northerly (Mistral) to northwesterly (Tramontane/Cierzo) winds. In most cases, these intense winds trigger entrainment at the bottom of the oceanic mixed layer which is a mechanism explaining part of the SST cooling in most cases. Our study suggests that the SST cooling due to this strong wind regime then persists until the HPEs and reduces the precipitation intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Characterizing and understanding the basic functioning of the Mediterranean Sea in terms of heat and salt redistribution within the basin is a crucial issue to predict its evolution. Here we quantify and analyze the heat and salt transfers using a simple box model consisting of four layers in the vertical for each of the two (western and eastern) basins. Namely, we box-average 14 regional simulations of the Med-CORDEX ensemble plus a regional and a global reanalysis, computing for each of them the heat and salt exchanges between layers. First, we analyze in detail the mechanisms behind heat and salt redistribution at different time scales from the outputs of a single simulation (NEMOMED8). We show that in the western basin the transfer between layer 1 (0-150 m) and layer 2 (150-600 m) is upwards for most models both for heat and salt, while in the eastern basin both transfers are downwards. A feature common to both basins is that the transports are smaller in summer than in winter due to the enhanced stratification, which dampen the mixing between layers. From the comparison of the 16 simulations we observe that the spread between models is much larger than the ensemble average for the salt transfer and for the heat transfer between layer 1 and layer 2. At lower layers (below 600 m) there is a set of models showing a good agreement between them, while others are not correlated with any other. The mechanisms behind the ensemble spread are not straightforward. First, to have a coarse resolution prevents the model to correctly represent the heat and salt redistribution in the basin. Second, those models with a very different initial stratification also show a very different redistribution, especially at intermediate and deep layers. Finally, the assimilation of data seems to perturb the heat and salt redistribution. Besides this, the differences among regional models that share similar spatial resolution and initial conditions are induced by more subtle mechanisms which depend on the variable and process analyzed. In order to reduce the uncertainties in the Mediterranean regional climate projections further modelling studies and better observational datasets are needed to constrain the main sources of discrepancies among models. In the absence of those, an ensemble modelling approach as the one followed in the Med-CORDEX initiative seems to be the best solution to evaluate model uncertainties into the future climate projections. The Mediterranean is expected to be one of the most prominent and vulnerable climate change "hot spots" of the 21st century, and the physical mechanisms underlying this finding are still not clear. Furthermore complex interactions and feedbacks involving ocean-atmosphere-land-biogeochemical processes play a prominent role in modulating the climate and environment of the Mediterranean region on a range of spatial and temporal scales. Therefore it is critical to provide robust climate change information for use in Vulnerability/Impact/Adaptation assessment studies considering the Mediterranean as a fully coupled environmental system. The Med-CORDEX initiative aims at coordinating the Mediterranean climate modeling community towards the development of fully coupled regional climate simulations, improving all relevant components of the system, from atmosphere and ocean dynamics to land surface, hydrology and biogeochemical processes. The primary goals of Med-CORDEX are to improve understanding of past climate variability and trends, and to provide more accurate and reliable future projections, assessing in a quantitative and robust way the added value of using high resolution and coupled regional climate models. The coordination activities and the scientific outcomes of Med-CORDEX can produce an important framework to foster the development of regional earth system models in several key regions worldwide. Understanding the role of sediment-water interactions in the oceanic cycling of neodymium (Nd) isotopes is essential for its reliable use as a modern and palaeoceanographic tracer of ocean circulation. However, the exact processes that control Nd cycling in the ocean are poorly defined and require an up-to-date knowledge of the sources, sinks and transformation of this tracer to and within the ocean (e.g. as per the GEOTRACES core mission). We propose a considerable improvement of Nd-source identification by providing an extensive and up-to-date compilation of published terrestrial and marine sedimentary Nd isotopic measurements. From this database, we construct high resolution, gridded, global maps that characterise the Nd-isotopic signature of the continental margins and seafloor sediment. Here, we present the database, interpolation methods, and final data products. Consistent with the previous studies that inform our compilation, our global results show unradiogenic detrital Nd isotopic values (ε Nd ≈ -20) in the North Atlantic, ε Nd values of ≈ -12 to -7 in the Indian and Southern Ocean, and radiogenic values (ε Nd ≈ -3 to +4) in the Pacific. The new, high-resolution interpolation is useful for improving conceptual knowledge of Nd sources and sinks and enables the application of isotope-enabled ocean models to understand targeted Nd behaviour in the oceans. Such applications may include: examining the strength and distribution of a possible benthic flux required to reconcile global Nd budgets, establishing the potential use of Nd isotopes as a kinematic tracer of ocean circulation, and a general quantification of the non-conservative sedimentary processes that may contribute to marine Nd cycling. Introduction and Methods: Different clinical and histological variants of lichen planus (LP) exist, such as lichen planopilaris, pigmentosus, linear, or atrophic LP. Recently, some cases came to our attention of hyperpigmented and atrophic linear lesions of the face with lichenoid histology, suggesting a combination of these different variants. We carried out a single-center, retrospective descriptive study of 6 similar cases selected from our database and compared them with a literature review., Results: There were 4 males and 2 females of mean age 42 years. Each had linear lesions located on one side of the face. All lesions were initially itchy; they appeared hyperpigmented in all patients and atrophic in 5 cases. Biopsies indicated lichen planopilaris in 5 patients, with deep peri-eccrine involvement in 4 of them. Only 2 of the 6 patients had extra-facial lesions., Discussion and Literature Review: We found 24 cases in the literature having similar clinical and histological aspects. Men aged around 37 years seemed particularly affected. An atrophic course was noticed in 10 patients. Such a clinicopathological picture may suggest differential diagnoses like lichen striatus, lupus erythematosus, lichen sclerosus atrophicus, or Moulin's linear atrophoderma. Early histopathological examination could be of precious assistance in allowing the initiation of effective treatment immediately as of the initial inflammatory phase, thereby limiting the risk of cosmetic sequelae such as atrophy or residual pigmentation., Conclusion: We describe a form of facial lichen planus that is highly particular in terms of its follicular tropism, its blaschkoid distribution, its pigmented character, and its atrophic progression., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS. Background: There have been few studies in France concerning the specific features of dermatological practice regarding dark skin (Fitzpatrick's phototype V and VI) or the special requirements of black African and Afro-Caribbean patients., Aim: To determine the principal reasons for dermatological consultation among black patients of African or Afro-Caribbean descent in the Paris region., Methods: This was a prospective clinical study conducted between 15 February and 15 May 2004. The diagnoses of cutaneous conditions leading to dermatological consultation for all black patients of phototype V to VI were recorded by 10 dermatologists practicing in 14 centres within the Paris region., Limits: The method used did not allow any conclusions to be drawn regarding the incidence of the presenting conditions among the global population nor did it allow comparison between populations of different phototypes. The absence of any preset list of diagnoses or of precise inclusion criteria regarding evaluation of skin colour left individual investigators with a broad margin of interpretation., Results: In 836 adults and 228 children (half of whom were from Africa and half from the West Indies), diagnoses were as follows: acne in 29.2% of adults and 13.2% in children, and eczema in 6.8% of adults and 27.2% of children. Among dermatoses more specific to black subjects, scalp conditions were frequently seen in both adults (alopecia 7% of diagnoses) and children (tinea capitis 9.6% and alopecia 3.6% of diagnoses). In at least 25% of cases, consultation was associated with dyschromia. Clinical signs suggesting the use of skin lightening products were seen in 95 patients., Conclusion: In France, as in other industrialized countries, black patients consult dermatologists essentially for common benign dermatoses also seen amongst white people. Nevertheless, it is important to emphasise the presence of skin problems specific to black patients such as dyschromia and pigmentary disorders, hair and scalp dermatoses, and side effects associated with the use of skin lightening products.
