In 4 female foals of the Norwegian horse breed, "Fjord Horse", congenital arthrogryposis of the limbs are described. The disorder was mainly limited to the hind limbs and associated with polydactylia and partly with brachygnathia superior and cleft palate. The defective foals were paternal halfsisters of 4 normal foals (1 female + 3 males), sired by the stallion "Bingo" 1804, which was phenotypically quite normal. The disorder being lethal, is possibly caused by a sex-limited or a strongly sex-influenced dominant gene.

Twenty-seven embryonic duplications were examined during a 3-year investigation into the causes of perinatal lamb mortality. Twenty of the 27 were anomalous twins with 19 being conjoined (diplopagus 9 and heteropagus 10). The various duplications were: haloacardius acephalus 1, diprosopus 2, dicephalus 2, dipypus 3, diprosopus dipygus 1, syncephalus dipygus 1, pygopagus parasiticus 1, heteropagus dipygus 3, melodidymus 6, polyury 4, penile duplication 2, and bilateral otognathia 1. Four lambs were living and the time of death of the others was: parturient 8, and post-parturient 15. Average dry weight of the lambs was 3.35 kg (range 1.59 to 5.45 kg). Breed distribution was: Merino 77.8%, Crossbred 14.8%, Dorset Horn 3.7%, and Corriedale 3.7%. The caudal region was involved in 10 of the conjoined twins (52.6%), anterior region in 7 (36.9%), and both anterior and caudal regions in 2 (10.5%). Associated defects were present in 70.4% of the 27 lambs, the most common being atresia ani.

In a 13-year survey of equine congenital defects that resulted in death or required euthanasia in central Kentucky, necropsies were performed on 608 deformed fetuses or newborn foals. The following congenital anomalies were observed: contracted foal syndrome (33.2%), miscellaneous limb contraction (20%), multiple defects (5.3%), microphthalmia (4.6%), craniofacial malformations (4.3%), cleft palate (4.0%), heart defects (3.5%), umbilical defects (3.5%), and hydrocephalus (3.0%). Eleven less frequently occurring anomalies constituted the balance of the congenital defects in fetuses and newborn foals.

Gross anatomical analysis of a derodidymic monosomic stillborn male calf from an embryo transfer recipient was carried out. Two normal heads were present on two necks which were fused at the shoulders. Although the ribs were abnormal in shape and number, there was one trunk and four legs. The vertebrae were double and partially fused from the thoracic region to the sacrum, which was singular and normal. In the thoracic region there was a single vertebral canal that contained two incompletely fused spinal cords which shared common meninges. In the lumbar region there was a spina bifida. The medial neck musculature was variously fused. Two esophagi entered one enlarged rumen and the liver and gallbladder had extra lobes. Two sets of lungs occupied three pleural cavities and also part of the pericardial cavity. Two hearts were joined by a common cavernous venous sinous. The vasculature cranial to the heart reflected the doubling. The vasculature caudally was singular. The calf was uniscrotal and ipsilaterally cryptorchid. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that atypical "hatching," that is, emergence of the blastocyst from the zona pellucida, may cause anomalous twinning.

Kidney tissures were collected from 142 calves during a study of pre- and perinatal mortality. Fifty-six calves had oxalate crystals in their renal tissue. Thirty-four of the 56 had either single or multiple congenital defects, mostly of the skeleton. Twenty-two of the 56 died of causes other than congenital defects. The renal oxalosis was more pronounced in those calves affected with congenital anomalies.

A 2-month-old, feral Hawaiian pig was found at necropsy to have four separate, functional kidneys. The two supernumerary kidneys were found caudal to the normal pair and caused partial blockage of the lower colon with resultant fecal impaction.

One hundred and forty-seven newborn lambs with congenital defects of the respiratory tract were examined during a 3-year investigation into the causes of perinatal lamb mortality. Respiratory defects were found in 3.3% of the 4,417 lambs examined and in one-third (36.6%) of the 401 congenitally malformed lambs. All the defects were secondary to other more extensive malformations. The upper respiratory tract was involved 3 times more than the lower tract. Males were involved more than females (4:3). The upper tract defects were harelip, cleft palate, atelorrhinia, arrhinia, proboscis, fused nostrils and choanal atresia. One of the facial clefts was a rare median harelip associated with cleft palate and fused nostrils. The lower tract defects were pulmonary agenesis, hypoplasia and duplication. The 2 most common defects were choanal atresia and secondary pulmonary hypoplasia. It was concluded that primary defects of the respiratory tract of sheep are rare and that secondary defects are relatively common.

A 6-week-old white-tailed deer fawn (Odocoileus virginianus), found in Vermont, was presented with carpal contraction, 90 degrees medial deviation of the rear legs from the hock distally, and an abnormal coat color. Radiographically there was lateral deviation of both medial metacarpal bones and a Grade IV medial patellar luxation.

A material containing 10(3.0) approximately 10(5.0) TCID50 of Akabane virus was inoculated into 6-day-old chick embryos by the yolk sac route. Death of embryos did not increase in the course of embryonic development till 18 days of age, as compared with control groups. Later than 18 days of age, however, the numbers of dead and peeping but unhatched embryos increased, making the hatching rate significantly low. Deformities, such as arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly, appeared in almost all the dead and unhatched embryos. They were severe in dead embryos, considerably severe in peeping unhatched embryos, and comparatively mild, though highly frequent, in affected hatched chicks. Many of the hatched chicks manifested ataxia, abnormal gait, astasia, or tremor of body or legs separately or together. Virus growth was demonstrated in chick embryos inoculated at 7 days of age. The virus titer was the highest (10(3.25 approximately 10(3.75) TCID50/O.1g) in head, trunk, and muscle, and the second highest (10(2.0) approximately 10(2.5) in brain, heart, and other visceral organs. It was the highest (10(4.0) approximately 10(4.5)) in muscle and a mixture of cerebellum and brain stem in embryos inoculated at 8 days of age.

A male Holstein-Friesian calf with seven legs was examined macroscopically and radiographically. External features included two normal forelimbs, two normal hindlimbs (lateral hindlimbs), and two abnormal hindlimbs (medial hindlimbs) which were underdeveloped. Also, a rudimentary forelimb, which was attached to the pelvic region, was observed between both the medial hindlimbs. It consisted of an underdeveloped humerus, a duplicated ulna, several carpal bones, a partially duplicated metacarpal bone and three digits with three hoofs. This leg was connected with two sets of coxae by a irregular-shaped bone considered the vestigial vertebrae and ribs. Two penises and scrotums, three kidneys and testes were also observed. This calf is the first case of dipygus associated with pygopagus parasiticus in cattle. Based on these findings, the pathogenesis of this rare anomaly was briefly discussed from an embryological point of view.

This paper describes the finding of a number of malformations in a live-born common marmoset. The malformations included microphthalmia, ocular hypertelorism, cleft lip and palate and polydactyly. The findings are consistent with and strongly suggest chromosome trisomy similar to that which has been seen in man.

Two of three caprine triplets caused dystocia due to malformed forelimbs. This malformity was caused by radial agenesis and ulnar hypoplasia. Other congenital anomalies were also present. The influence of diet versus genetics could not be ascertained. Bilateral ulnar fractures in one kid revealed histologically rounded fracture ends with prominent periosteal new bone formation.

An unusual occipitoatlantoaxial malformation is described in a 2-week-old male part Arabian foal that was unable to stand at birth and showed signs of spastic tetraparesis due to a cervical spinal cord compression. There were 2 atlases present. One was fused to the occipital bones. The other articulated with the first atlas and an axis which had a long dens that projected into the vertebral canal. Examination of the ossification centers of the axis indicated partial duplication of that bone.

In 214 cases of severe dystocia in mares, of which 141 (66 per cent) were Draught horses, deviation of the head and neck, with or without torticollis, malformed head and limbs were found to be the cause of dystocia. No evidence of a genetic lethal factor was found and torticollis was often combined with scoliosis of the head and, frequently, with malformation of one or more limbs. This is considered evidence of a common aetiology and pathogenesis of the syndrome of malformation. The malformations were found to be associated with an increased incidence of caudal and, particularly, transverse presentations. These findings are presented as evidence to support the hypothesis that, during the second half of pregnancy, the narrow tip of the uterine horns provides only limited space for the developing cranial half of the foetus. The surprisingly rapid and complete anatomical and functional recovery of severe malformations of the bones of the neck, head and limbs of surviving foals, born by caesarian section, is taken as further evidence that these malformations have no genetic basis, but originate from unfavourable intrauterine conditions.

Holoprosencephaly in Border Leicester lambs is described. This defect is characterised by lack of the longitudinal cerebral fissure, fusion of the cerebral hemispheres and a single lateral ventricle. Facial defects are also associated with this condition. Results of a breeding experiment suggest that it is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Results from a survey indicate that the condition is widespread in Border Leicester sheep.

Congenital ocular and related anomalies were studied in two unrelated young raccoons. One animal was anophthalmic and had severe anomalies of the central nervous system, consisting of meningoencephalocele, pachygyria, hydranencephaly, cerebellar cavitation, syringomyelia, and other defects. A second animal was microphthalmic with congenital defects of the nose, maxilla and teeth. Ocular lesions were severe and included chorioretinal coloboma, retinal folds, disorganized neuroectodermal cell layers, spherophakia, cataract and other defects. The nose had unilateral abnormal epithelium, hair follicles, sweat glands and sebaceous glands, and a lack of parietal cartilage on the affected side.

In a colony of black and white ruffed lemurs, Lemur (Varecia) variegatus subsp., similar congenital anomalies were found in successive years. Four malformed infants had skull defects, scoliosis, kinked tails, internal anomalies as well as reduced birth weights. The derived from one male and two females whose phenotypes are normal except for the kinked tail of the male. The possible causes including modes of inheritance are considered.

Throughout its life, a 1-year-old Doberman Pinscher dog had had gastrointestinal disorders and episodes of circling. It was less active than its littermates, and it usually seemed lethargic. When 3 months old, the pup had been anesthetized for ear cropping and it had remained anesthetized for 32 hours. Behavioral problems were apparent when the dog was 11 months old. Two weeks later the behavioral problems accentuated to the point that the dog developed "temper tantrums" and became aggressive toward its owner. On the basis of clinicopathologic and contrast radiographic findings, hepatoencephalopathy due to persistent patent ductus venosus was diagnosed and the dog was euthanatized. Situs inversus abdominalis and multiple vascular anomalies were found at necropsy. Gross and microscopic studies of the viscera were correlated with corrosion casts of the vasculature. In addition to changes in organ position, 3 spleens and malformation of the pancreas were observed. Vascular anomalies were: (1) The portal vein was contiguous with the common hepatic vein by way of a patent ductus venosus; branches of the portal vein were not given off to the liver; (2) the caudal vena cava was continued by the azygos vein, and a cranial segment of the caudal vena cava was absent; (3) the hepatic artery was larger than normal; (4) the left gastric artery arose anomalously from the cranial mesenteric artery; and (5) histologic and radiographic study of the liver did not reveal any interlobular branches of the portal vein; however, hypoplastic branches of the gastroduodenal vein did enter the liver and were demonstrated on a corrosion cast.

Patent urachus is a common condition in calves which is frequently associated with omphalitis. A membranous urethral diaphragm prevented closure of the urachus in a female calf. The patent urachus was complicated by an ascending infection of the intraabdominal umbilical remnants. Following surgical removal of the urachus and umbilical vessels along with transection of the membranous diaphragm the calf experienced an uncomplicated recovery. This case stresses the importance of assuring urethral patency when managing a case of patent urachus.

Seven calves born to 7 cows fed Nicotiana glauca during portions of the 1st trimester of gestation were deformed at birth. Deformities increased in severity as the calves aged. At birth, calves typically had arthrogryposis of the forelimbs or curvature of the spine; severity varied among calves. In 4 calves necropsied at about 15 months of age, there was general malpositioning and misalignment of the distal ends of the radius and ulna and the proximal ends of the metacarpal bones. Carpal joints were severely affected, fetlock joints were moderately affected, and pastern joints were slightly affected, with lateral rotation of forelimbs common; severity varied among calves. In 1 of the 4 calves, there was moderate torticollis and scoliosis resulting from wedging of some of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae and abnormal cranial curvature of the left thoracic ribs. Histologic changes were not noticed in muscle, brain, spinal cord, or endocrine organs of the 4 calves.

During the past three decades, Burmese cats have been selected for a shorter muzzle and a more rounded face. Recently there arose a line of these animals that consistently exhibit such a brachycephalic appearance; unfortunately, approximately 25% of these kittens are born with a neonatal lethal midfacial malformation. The abnormality is characterized by agenesis of all derivatives of the medial nasal prominence; lateral duplication of most derivatives of the maxillary process; including the canine teeth and whiskers fields; telencephalic meningoencephalocele; and secondary ocular degeneration. The anatomy, embryology, and pattern of inheritance of this unique midfacial malformation are described.

Spina bifida of the proximal coccygeal vertebral column with an associated meningocoele is described in a male, mixed breed, congenitally short-tailed cat. The meningocoele had opened onto the skin of the tail allowing periodic escape of cerebrospinal fluid. Other clinical signs exhibited by the animal were an abnormal hindquarter gait, paralysis of the tail and defective control of urination and defaecation.

Hypotrichosis and oligodontia associated with a chromosomal anomaly (Xq-deletion) are described in a 11-month old cattle (Simmenthal/Red Holstein cross-breed). This chromosomal anomaly was accompanied with hairlessness and grievous teeth abnormalities. The animal had a very thin haircoat, had only one incisor and between one to three molars per mandible or maxilla. This resulted in reduced food intake, reduced rumination, and retarded growth. Post-mortem examination revealed lesions in the kidneys (bilateral chronic interstitial nephritis), adrenals (hyperplasia), pancreas (focal fibrosis) and abomasum (obstipation and multiple ulcers). Some of these abnormalities are comparable with the human "anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia" (Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome) and supports the hypothesis that there are homologies in the X-chromosome of different mammals.
