201. Measurement of the B̄ → D(*)πℓν̄ℓ branching fraction

Abstract

A study of b semileptonic decays into D, Dπ± and D*π± final states is presented. The D0, D+ and D*+ mesons are exclusively reconstructed in Z decay data recorded from 1992 to 1995 in the DELPHI experiment at LEP. The overall branching fractions are measured to be: BR(b→ D0ℓ-νℓX) = (7.04 + 0.34 (stat) + 0.36 (syst.exp) + 0.17 (BRD))%, BR(b→ D+ℓ-νℓX) = (2.72 + 0.19 (stat) + 0.16 (syst.exp) + 0.18 (BRD))%, BR(b→ D*+ℓ-νℓX) = (2.75 + 0.17 (stat) + 0.13 (syst.exp) + 0.09 (BRD))%, where the D0 and D+ results include also contributions from D*0 and D*+ decays. A fit to the distribution of the π± impact parameter to the primary interaction vertex provides a measurement of the b semileptonic branching fractions into the D0π±X, D+π±X and D*+π±X final states. Assuming that single pion decay modes of B mesons dominate, the partial rates for B→Dπℓ-νℓ and B→D*πℓ-νℓ have been obtained, corresponding to a total branching fraction: BR(B→Dπℓ-νℓ) +BR(B→D*πℓ-νℓ) = (3.40 + 0.52 (stat) + 0.32 (syst))%. This result agrees well with the observed difference between the total B semileptonic branching fraction and the sum of the B→Dℓ-νℓ and B→D*ℓ-νℓ branching fractions. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

A search for events with one jet and at most one isolated lepton used data taken at LEP-2 by the DELPHI detector. These data were accumulated at a center-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. Production of single scalar and vector leptoquarks was searched for. Limits at 95% confidence leva were derived on the masses (ranging from 134 GeV/c2 to 171 GeV/c2 for electromagnetic type couplings) and couplings of the leptoquark states. A search for top-charm flavour changing neutral currents (e+e-→t̄c or charge conjugate) used the semileptonic decay channel. A limit on the flavour changing cross-section via neutral currents was set at 0.55pb (95% confidence level). © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

204. Study of B-s(0)-(B-s(0))over-bar oscillations and B-s(0) lifetimes using hadronic decays of B-s(0) mesons

Abstract

Oscillations of B0s mesons have been studied in samples selected from about 3.5 million hadronic Z decays detected by DELPHI between 1992 and 1995. One analysis uses events in the exclusive decay channels: B0s → D-sπ+ or D-sa+1 and B0s → D̄0K-π+ or D̄0K-a+1, where the D decays are completely reconstructed. In addition. B0s-B0s̄ oscillations have been studied in events with an exclusively reconstructed Ds accompanied in the same hemisphere by a high momentum hadron of opposite charge. Combining the two analyses, a limit on the mass difference between the physical B0s states has been obtained: ΔmB0s > 4.0 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of ΔmB0s = 3.2 ps-1. Using the latter sample of events, the B0s lifetime has been measured and an upper limit on the decay width difference between the two physical B0s states has been obtained: τB0s = 1.53+0.16-0.15(stat.) ± 0.07(syst.) ps ΔΓB0s/ΓB0s < 0.69 at the 95% C.L. The combination of these results with those obtained using D±sℓ∓ sample gives: ΔmB0s > 4.9 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of ΔmB0s = 8.7 ps-1. τB0s = 1.46 ± 0.11 ps and ΔΓB0s/ΓB0s < 0.45 at the 95% C.L.

Abstract

The rapidity-rank structure of pp̄ pairs is used to analyze the mechanism of baryon production in hadronic Z0 decay. The relative occurrence of the rapidity-ordered configuration p M p̄, where M is a meson, and that of pp̄ adjacent pairs is compared. The data are found to be consistent with predictions from a mechanism producing adjacent-rank pp̄ pairs, without requiring 'string-ordered' p M p̄ configurations. An upper limit of 15% at 90% confidence is determined for the p M p̄ contribution. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Oscillations in the Bs0-Bs0 system were studied in events selected from about 4.3 million hadronic Z 0 decays registered by DELPHI between 1992 and 2000. This paper presents updates of two published analyses ([11,12]). The first analysis, which utilizes leptons emitted with large momentum transverse to a jet, was improved by means of a better algorithm for the vertex reconstuction and a new algorithm for flavour-tagging at production time. The second analysis, which utilizes Ds-lepton events, was improved by optimizing the treatment of proper time resolution. No signal of B0 oscillations was observed and limits on the mass difference between the physical B0 states were obtained to be: δms > 8.0ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of δms = 9.1 ps-1 in the high pt lepton analysis and δms < 4.9 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of δms = 8.6 ps-1 in the D s-lepton analysis. Previously published results on these analyses are superseded. The combination of these results with those obtained in other independent analyses previously performed in DELPHI (Ds-hadron, exclusive Bs0, inclusive vertex) gives: δm, > 8.5 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of δms = 12.0 ps-1.

Abstract

During the last 1995 data acquisition period at LEP, the DELPHI experiment collected an integrated luminosity of 5.9 pb-1 at centre-of-mass energies of 130 GeV and 136 GeV. Radiative leptonic events (e, μ, τ) with high energy photons were studied and compared to Standard Model predictions. The data were used to search for charged excited leptons decaying through an electromagnetic transition. No significant signal was found. From the search for pair produced excited leptons, the limits me* > 62.5 GeV/c2, mμ* > 62.6 GeV/c2 and mτ* > 62.2 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level were established. For single excited lepton production, upper limits on the ratio λ/mℓ* of the coupling of the excited charged lepton to its mass were derived.

Abstract

Neutral triple-gauge-boson couplings ZZZ, ZZγ and Zγγ have been studied with the DELPHI detector using data at energies between 183 and 208 GeV. Limits are derived on these couplings from an analysis of the reactions e+e-→Zγ, using data from the final states γff̄, with f=q or ν, from e+e -→ZZ, using data from the four-fermion final states qq̄qq̄, qq̄μ+μ-, qq̄e +e-, qq̄νν̄, μ+μ -νν̄ and e+e-νν̄, and from e+e-→Zγ*, in which the final state γ is off mass-shell, using data from the four-fermion final states qq̄e+e- and qq̄μ+μ-. No evidence for the presence of such couplings is observed, in agreement with the predictions of the Standard Model. © 2007 Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica.

Abstract

The total and the differential cross-sections for the reaction e+e- → γγ(γ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV for an integrated luminosity of 78.19 pb-1. The results agree with the QED predictions. The lower limits (obtained including previously published results at the Z0 energies) on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ+ > 253 GeV and Λ-> 225 GeV and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λγ = 1 is 231 GeV/c2. 211. Search for R-parity violation with a Ū D̄ D̄ coupling at √s = 189 GeV

Abstract

Searches for pair production of gauginos and squarks in e+e- collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV have been performed on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 158 pb-1 collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP. The data were analyzed under the assumption of non-conservation of R-parity through a single dominant Ū D̄ D̄ coupling between squarks and quarks. Typical final states contain between 4 and 10 jets with or without additional leptons. No excess of data above Standard Model expectations was observed. The results were used to constrain domains of the MSSM parameter space and derive limits on the masses of supersymmetric particles. The following mass limits at 95% CL were obtained from these searches: neutralino mass: mx̃1/0 ≥ 32 GeV; chargino mass: mx̃1/+ ≥ 94 GeV; stop and sbottom mass (indirect decay) with δAM > 5 GeV: mt̃1 ≥ 74 GeV for φmix = 0 rad, mt̃1 ≥ 59 GeV for φmix = 0.98 rad, mb̃1 ≥ 72 GeV for φmix = 0 rad. The angle φmix is the mixing angle between left and right handed quarks. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

A sample of 2.2 million hadronic Z decays, selected from the data recorded by the Delphi detector at LEP during 1994-1995 was used for an improved measurement of inclusive distributions of pi+, K+ and p and their antiparticles in gluon and quark jets. The production spectra of the individual identified particles were found to be softer in gluon jets compared to quark jets, with a higher multiplicity in gluon jets as observed for inclusive charged particles. A significant proton enhancement in gluon jets is observed indicating that baryon production proceeds directly from colour objects. The maxima, xi^*, of the xi-distributions for kaons in gluon and quark jets are observed to be different., 24 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

This paper presents results on charged Higgs boson production, based on LEP data collected at √s = 172 GeV, that complement the previous DELPHI results obtained at centre of mass energies up to 161 GeV. The charged Higgs bosons are assumed to be pair produced and to decay either into a quark pair or into τVτ. The three different possible final states are included in the analysis. Data from ring imaging Cherenkov and microvertex detectors are used to identify the quarks as a cs pair. The number of candidates found is compatible with the background expected from standard processes. Combining the results of the present analysis with those of the previous analysis at lower energies, a new lower mass limit for the charged Higgs boson is set at 54.5 GeV/c2. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Measurements of the Ξ- and over(Ξ, ̄)+ masses, mass differences, lifetimes and lifetime differences are presented. The over(Ξ, ̄)+ sample used is much larger than those used previously for such measurements. In addition, the Ξ production rates in Z → b over(b, ̄) and Z → q over(q, ̄) events are compared and the position ξ* of the maximum of the ξ distribution in Z → q over(q, ̄) events is measured. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The charmed strange baryon Ξc0 was searched for in the decay channel Ξc0 → Ξ-π+, and the beauty strange baryon Ξb in the inclusive channel Ξb → Ξ-ℓ-νX, using the 3.5 million hadronic Z events collected by the DELPHI experiment in the years 1992-1995. The Ξ- was reconstructed through the decay Ξ- → Λπ-, using a constrained fit method for cascade decays. An iterative discriminant analysis was used for the Ξc0 and Ξb selection. The production rates were measured to be fΞ0c ×BR(Ξc0 → Ξ-π+) = (4.7 ± 1.4(stat.) ± 1.1(syst.)) × 10-4 per hadronic Z decay, and BR(b → Ξb)×BR(Ξb → Ξ-ℓ-X) = (3.0 ± 1.0(stat.) ± 0.3(syst.)) × 10-4 for each lepton species (electron or muon). The lifetime of the Ξb baryon was measured to be τΞb = 1.45+0.55-0.43(stat.) ± 0.13(syst.) ps. A combination with the previous DELPHI lifetime measurement gives τΞb = 1.48+0.40-0.31(stat.) ± 0.12(syst.) ps. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2005.

Abstract

Measurements of the trilinear gauge boson couplings WWγ and WWZ are presented from data taken by DELPHI in 1997 at an energy of 183 GeV. From a study of the reactions e+ e- →W+W-, e+e- → Wev and e+ e-→ vvy, values are obtained for Δg1Z and Δκγ, the differences of the WWZ charge coupling and of the WWγ dipole couplings from their Standard Model values, and for λγ, the WWγ quadrupole coupling. Abstract

This letter reports the results of the measurement of single photon production in the reaction e+e- → γ+ invisible particles at centre-of-mass energies √s = 130 and 136 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 5.83 pb-1, collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP. The signal is compatible with the prediction of the Standard Model for the process e+e- → vv̄γ, and the number of neutrino families has been determined to be Nv, = 3.1 ± 0.6. Limits have been derived on anomalous neutral gauge boson couplings and on compositeness in the framework of a specific model.

Abstract

Promptly decaying lightest charginos were searched for in the context of scenarios with gravitino LSP. It was assumed that the stau is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). Data collected with the DELPHI detector at a centre-of-mass energy near 183 GeV were analysed combining the methods developed in previous searches. No evidence for the production of these partiel es was found. Hence, limits were derived at 95% confidence level. The mass of charginos was found to be greater than 85.5 GeV/c2 for mχ + ̃1+ - mτ + ̃1 ≥ 0.3 GeV/c2, independently of the mass of the gravitino. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The interference between initial and final state radiation in the process e+e-→μ+μ- at √s≈MZ has been studied by measuring the forward-backward asymmetry as a function of the acoplanarity angle between the final state muons. The interference is expected to be sensitive to the space-time separation of the initial and final state radiation. The measured asymmetry distribution has been compared to theoretical predictions using the koralz generator, with and without {Mathematical expression} interference. The magnitude of the interference between initial and final state radiation was found to be of the order predicted and to follow the expected distribution. Using the theoretical predictions, a value of {Mathematical expression} has been extracted. The interpretation of this result is discussed. There is an additional uncertainty in the estimate of ΓZ from as yet uncalculated higher order interference terms. By assuming a value of ΓZ consistent with the world average, the data were used to estimate the size of these uncalculated corrections. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

A search with the DELPHI detector at LEP for excited leptons (e*, μ*, τ* and v*) decaying through γ, W or Z transitions is reported. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 10 pb-1 at an e+e- centre-of-mass energy of 161 GeV. The search for pair produced excited leptons established the limits me* > 79.6 GeV/c2, mμ* > 79.6 GeV/c2, mτ* > 79.4 GeV/c2 and mv* > 56.4 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level, assuming that the SU(2) and U(1) couplings of excited leptons are in the same ratio as for normal leptons and considering both left and right-handed components. Limits corresponding to other assumptions are also given. The search for single excited lepton production established upper limits on the ratio λ/mℓ* of the coupling of the excited lepton to its mass.

Abstract

DELPHI results are presented on the inclusive production of the neutral mesons ρ0, f0(980), f2(1270), K2*0(1430) and f2′(1525) in hadronic Z0 decays. They are based on about 2 million multihadronic events collected in 1994 and 1995, using the particle identification capabilities of the DELPHI Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors and measured ionization losses in the Time Projection Chamber. The total production rates per hadronic Z0 decay have been determined to be: 1.19 ± 0.10 for ρ0; 0.164 ± 0.021 for f0(980); 0.214 ± 0.038 for f2(1270); 0.073 ± 0.023 for K2*0(1430); and 0.012 ± 0.006 for f2′(1525). The total production rates for all mesons and differential cross-sections for the ρ0, f0(980) and f2(1270) are compared with the results of other LEP experiments and with models. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The production of multihadronic states in γγ collisions at LEP has been studied with the DELPHI detector. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 32pb-1, collected in the LEP runs of 1990-1992. Minimum bias data and a sample of events with jets at high pT have been selected under the requirement that no scattered electron or positron is observed. The two data sets have been compared to Monte Carlo predictions. The non-perturbative contribution described by the vector meson dominance Model and direct {Mathematical expression} production from pointlike photons described by the quark parton model were found to be insufficient to reproduce the data. It has been necessary to include a third interaction component, which is due to perburbative hard scattering of the partonic constituents of the photon. Several parametrisations of the quark and gluon densities of the photon have been tested. The interplay with the cut in jet transverse momentum, which is necessary for the separation of the perturbative and non-perturbative regions, is discussed. The data favour parametrisations with rather soft partonic content of the photon. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Promptly decaying lightest neutralinos and long-lived staus are searched for in the context of light gravitino scenarios. It is assumed that the stau is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and that the lightest neutralino is the next to NLSP (NNLSP). Data collected with the Delphi detector at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 183 GeV are analysed. No evidence of the production of these particles is found. Hence, lower mass limits for both kinds of particles are set at 95% C.L.. The mass of gaugino-like neutralinos is found to be greater than 71.5GeV/c2. In the search for long-lived stau, masses less than 70.0 to 77.5GeV/c2 are excluded for gravitino masses from 10 to 150eV/c2. Combining this search with the searches for stable heavy leptons and minimal supersymmetric standard model staus a lower limit of 68.5GeV/c2 may be set for the stau mass independent of the mass of the gravitino.

Abstract

Searches for resonant ν̃ production in e+e- collisions under the assumption that R-parity is not conserved and that the dominant R-parity violating coupling is λ121m or λ131 used data recorded by DELPHI in 1997 to 2000 at centre-of-mass energies of 183 to 208 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model was observed. Upper limits are given for the λ121 and λ131 couplings as a function of the sneutrino mass and total width. The limits are especially stringent for sneutrino masses equal to the centre-of-mass energies with the highest integrated luminosities recorded.

Abstract

An update of the searches for charginos and neutralinos in DELPHI is presented, based mainly on recent data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 161 GeV and 172 GeV. No signal is found. For a sneutrino with mass above 300 GeV/c2 and a mass difference between the chargino and the lightest neutralino above 10 GeV/c2, the lower limit at 95% confidence level on the chargino mass ranges from 84.3 GeV/c2 to the kinematical limit (86.0 GeV/c2), depending on the mixing parameters. The limit decreases for lower chargino-neutralino mass differences. The limit in the case of a light sneutrino is 67.6 GeV/c2, provided that that there is no light sneutrino with a mass within 10 GeV/c2 below the chargino mass. Upper limits on neutralino pair production cross-sections of about a picobarn are derived. The (μ, M2) domain excluded in the MSSM-GUT scenario is determined by combining the neutralino and chargino searches. These results imply a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy sneutrino, is constrained to be above 24.9 GeV/c2 for tanβ ≥ 1. The search has also been extended to the case where the lightest neutralino is unstable and decays into a photon and a gravitino.

A measurement of B meson lifetimes is presented using data collected from 1991 to 1993 by the DELPHI detector at the LEP collider. Samples of events with a D meson and a lepton in the same jet are selected where {Mathematical expression} and D*ℓ+ events originate mainly from the semileptonic decays of B+ and B0 mesons, respectively. From the reconstructed B decay length and the estimated B momentum, taking into account the dilution due to B decays into {Mathematical expression}, the following B meson lifetimes and lifetime ratio are measured: {Mathematical expression} and an average lifetime of B+ and B0 mesons is obtained: {Mathematical expression} © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Data from Z decays in DELPHI have been searched for Bd0 → D*+ℓ-νℓ with the D*+ decaying to D0π+ and D0 → K-π+, K-π +π+π- or K-π +(π0). These events are used to measure the CKM matrix element |Vcb| and the form factor slope, ρA12: ℱD* (1) |Vcb| = 0.0392 ± 0.0018 ± 0.0023; ρA12 = 1.32 ± 0.15 ± 0.33 corresponding to a branching fraction: BR(Bd0 → D*+ℓ-νℓ) = (5.90 ± 0.22 ± 0.50)%. Combining these and previous DELPHI measurements gives: ℱD* (1) |Vcb| = 0.0377 ± 0.0011 ± 0.0019, ρA12 = 1.39 ± 0.10 ± 0.33 and BR(Bd0 → D* +ℓ-νℓ) = (5.39 ± 0.11 ± 0.34)% Using ℱD* (1) = 0.91 ± 0.04, yields: |Vcbl = 0.0414 ± 0.0012(stat.) ± 0.0021(syst.) ± 0.0018(theory). The b-quark semileptonic branching fraction into a D*+ emitted from higher mass charmed excited states has also been measured to be: BR(b → D*+Xℓ-ν ℓ) = (0.67 ± 0.08 ± 0.10)%.

Abstract

The measurement of the correlation between the transverse spin components of τ+ τ- pairs collected during 1992 to 1994 with the DELPHI detector at LEP1 is presented. A value CTT = 0.87 ± 0.20 (stat.) +0.10-0.12 (syst.) was obtained for the correlation parameter, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

A measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of e+e- → cc̄ and e+e- → bb̄ on the Z resonance is performed using about 3.5 million hadronic Z decays collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1992 to 1995. The heavy quark is tagged by the exclusive reconstruction of several D meson decay modes. The forward-backward asymmetries for c and b quarks at the Z resonance are determined to be: AcFB(√s = 91.235GeV) = 0.0659 ± 0.0094 (stat) ± 0.0035 (syst) AbFB(√s = 91.235 GeV) = 0.0762 ± 0.0194 (stat) ± 0.0085 (syst) AcFB(√s = 89.434 GeV) = -0.0496 ± 0.0368 (stat) ± 0.0053 (syst) AbFB(√s = 89.434 GeV) = 0.0567 ± 0.0756 (stat) ± 0.0117 (syst) AcFB(√s = 92.990 GeV) = 0.1180 ± 0.0318 (stat) ± 0.0062 (syst) AbFB(√s = 92.990 GeV) = 0.0882 ± 0.0633 (stat) ± 0.0122 (syst) The combination of these results leads to an effective electroweak mixing angle of: sin2 θlepteff = 0.2332 ± 0.0016.

Abstract

The hadronic part of the electron structure function F2e has been measured for the first time, using e +e - data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies of s=91.2-209.5GeV. The data analysis is simpler than that of the measurement of the photon structure function. The electron structure function F2e data are compared to predictions of phenomenological models based on the photon structure function. It is shown that the contribution of large target photon virtualities is significant. The data presented can serve as a cross-check of the photon structure function F2γ analyses and help in refining existing parameterisations. © 2014 The Authors. Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

A sample of events enriched in bb̄ quark pairs was selected in the data recorded by the DELPHI experiment at LEP during 1992 and 1993, by the presence of secondary decay vertices from short-lived particles. Using this sample, the average multiplicities of KS0, K±, p(p̄), Λ(Λ̄) and of charged particles in bb̄ events have been measured, distinguishing the component from fragmentation and the component coming from the decay of b-hadrons. The measurement of the average charge multiplicity in bb̄ events was used to compute the mean fractional beam energy carried by the primary b-hadron, and the difference in charged particle multiplicity between bb̄ events and light quark (uū, dd̄, ss̄) events.

Abstract

The transverse, longitudinal and asymmetric components of the fragmentation function are measured from the inclusive charged particles produced in e+e- collisions at LEP. As in deep inelastic scattering, these data are important for tests of QCD. The transverse σΤ and longitudinal σL components of the total hadronic cross section σtot are evaluated from the measured fragmentation functions. They are found to be σΤ/σtot = 0.949 ± 0.001(stat.) ± 0.007(syst.) and σL/σtot = 0.051 ± 0.001(stat) ± 0.007(syst.) respectively. The strong coupling constant is calculated from σL/σtot in next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD, giving αs(Mz) = 0.120 ± 0.002(stat.) ± 0.013(syst.) ± 0.007(scale) . Including non-perturbative power corrections leads to αs(Mz) = 0.101 ± 0.002(stat.) ± 0.013(syst.) ± 0.007(scale) . The measured transverse and longitudinal components of the fragmentation function are used to estimate the mean charged multiplicity, 〈nch〉 = 21.21 ± 0.01(stat.) ± 0.20(syst.) The fragmentation functions and multiplicities in bb̄ and light quark events are compared. The measured transverse and longitudinal components of the fragmentation function allow the gluon fragmentation function to be evaluated.

244. Measurement of the W-pair cross-section and of the W mass in e(+)e(-) interactions at 172 GeV

Abstract

From a data sample of 9.98 pb-1 integrated luminosity, collected by DELPHI at a centre-of-mass energy of 172 GeV, 118 events were selected as W-pair candidates. From these, the branching fraction Br(W → qq̄) was measured to be 0.660+0.036-0.037 (stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) and the cross-section for the doubly resonant process e+e- → W+W- to be 11.58+1.44-1.35 (stat.) ± 0.32(syst.) pb. The mass of the W boson, obtained from direct reconstruction of the invariant mass of the fermion pairs in the decays WW → ℓvqq̄ and WW → qq̄qq̄, was determined to be mW = 80.22±0.41(stat.)±0.04(syst.)±0.05(int.)±0.03(LEP) GeV/c2, where "int." denotes the uncertainty from interconnection effects like colour reconnection and Bose-Einstein interference. Combined with the W mass obtained from the cross-sections measured by DELPHI at threshold, a value of mW = 80.33 ± 0.30(stat.) ± 0.05(syst.) ± 0.03(int.) ± 0.03(LEP) GeV/c2 was found.

Abstract

From the data collected by DELPHI at LEP in autumn 1995, the multiplicity of charged particles at a hadronic energy of 130 GeV has been measured to be 〈nch〉 = 23.84 ± 0.51 (stat) ± 0.52(syst). When compared to lower energy data, the value measured is consistent with the evolution predicted by QCD with corrections at next-to-leading order, for a value αs(130 GeV) = 0.105 ± 0.003(stat) ± 0.008(syst).

Abstract

The cross-section for the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+W^-$ has been measured with the data sample collected by DELPHI at an average centre-of-mass energy of 182.65 GeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 53 pb$^{-1}$. Based on the 770 events selected as $WW$ candidates, the cross-section for the doubly resonant process $ \sigma (e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+W^-) = 15.86~{\pm 0.69}~\mbox{(stat)} ~\pm 0.26~\mbox{(syst)~pb} $ has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The branching fractions of the $W$ decay were also measured. From these a value of the CKM mixing matrix element $ |V_{cs}| = 0.985 \pm 0.073~\mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.025 ~\mbox{(syst)}$ was derived. Our previously published $WW$ cross-section measurements and the derived measurement of $m_W$ have been revised and updated with the present cross-section measurement to yield $ m_W = 80.49 \pm 0.43 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.09 (\mathrm{syst}) \pm 0.03 (\mathrm{LEP})~{\mathrm GeV}/{\it c}^2$.

Abstract

The forward-backward asymmetries of the processes e+e - → Z → bb̄ and e+e- → Z → cc̄ were measured from a sample of hadronic Z decays collected by the DELPHI experiment between 1993 and 1995. Enriched samples of bb̄ and cc̄ events were obtained using lifetime information. The tagging of and and c quarks in these samples was based on the semileptonic decay channels b/c → X + μ and b/c → X + e combined with charge flow information from the hemisphere opposite to the lepton. Combining the AFBbb̄ and AFBcc̄ measurements presented in this paper with published results based on 1991 and 1992 DELPHI data samples, the following pole asymmetries were obtained: AFB0,b = 0.1021 ± 0.0052 (stat) ± 0.0024 (syst) A FB0,c = 0.0728 ± 0.0086 (stat) ± 0.0063 (syst) The effective value of the weak mixing angle derived from these measurements is sin2 θW,efflept = 0.23170 ± 0.00097.

Abstract

A study of the inclusive charged hadron production in two-photon collisions is described. The data were collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP II. Abstract

Single top quark production via four-fermion contact interactions associated to flavour-changing neutral currents was searched for in data taken by the DELPHI detector at LEP2. The data were accumulated at centre-ofmass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV, with an integrated luminosity of 598.1 pb−1. No evidence for a signal was found. Limits on the energy scale Λ, were set for scalar-, vector- and tensor-like coupling scenarios.
