Objectives: Bone tissue has the ability to heal itself (regeneration) and may restore its morphology and function when injured. However, healing may be limited in the case of large wounds. A "critical-size defect" is an intraosseous wound in a particular bone and species of animal that will not heal spontaneously morphologically and functionally during the lifetime of the animal. Autogenous bone grafts have been regarded as "gold standard" for treatment of critical-size bone defects. Known drawbacks of autogenous bone graft have led to research efforts focusing on different graft materials and resulted in several alternative substitutes including xenografts, allografts and synthetic graft materials. The aim of the present study was to perform a histomorphometric study to investigate the effect of bovine demineralized bone graft on bone healing in comparison to autogenous, allogeneic and synthetic graft materials when applied into critical size bone defects with a diameter of 5 mm. Materials and Methods: Experimental animals were divided into 4 groups, each having 8 rats. In the control group, a mandibular defect was created and then filled with a bovine graft (Integros Bone Plus XS Adana/Turkey). In the experimental groups, autogenous bone was reinserted into the critical-size defect which was created using a trephine bur in Group I (autogenous group) and Group II received a human graft (Korea Bone Bank (KBB) Gasandong Keumcheongu Seoul/South Korea) to fill the critical-size defect. For Group III, a synthetic bone graft ?-tricalcium phosphate (Cerasorb North Carolina/USA) was applied on the critical-size bone defect. Specimens were obtained for histomorphometric examination and rats were sacrificed on day 28. Results: Histomorphometric examination performed on day 28 to evaluate the relative effects of different graft materials on new bone formation showed no significant difference in the volume of newly formed bone between groups receiving autogenous bone graft, allograft and bovine xenograft but a significant difference was observed versus synthetic bone graft group. Conclusion: While autogenous bone graft is currently regarded as the gold standard for bone regeneration, the difficulties in harvesting and application of autografts limit their use. Our results demonstrate that bovine bone graft may be used as a safe and effective alternative to autogenous bone graft. © 2018 Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Dentistry. Daha sonraki deney gruplarinda; I. grupta oluşturulan kritik boyutlu defekte trefin frezle çikartilan otojen kemik tekrar konuldu. II. grupta oluşturulan kritik boyutlu defekte insan kaynakli kemik grefti (Korea Bone Bank (KBB) Gasandong Keumcheongu Seoul/Korea) uygulandi. III. grupta oluşturulan kritik boyutlu kemik defektine ise sentetik kemik grefti grubunda yer alan ?-trikalsiyum fosfat (Cerasorb North Caroline/USA) uygulandi. 28 gün sonra ratlar öldürüldü.Her grup sakrifiye edilerek histomorfometrik incelemeye alindi. Bulgular: Farkli greft materyallerinin 28. günde yeni kemik oluşumuna olan etkisinin histomorfometrik olarak incelendiğinde otojen kemik grefti, allogreft ve siğir kaynakli kemik grefti uygulanan gruplar arasinda yeni oluşan kemik hacmi bakimindan anlamli bir fark bulunmazken, sentetik kemik grefti uygulanan grupla aralarindaki fark anlamli bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Otojen kemik grefti günümüzde hala altin standart olarak kabul edilmesine rağmen, elde edilmesi ve uygulanmasindaki zorluklar nedeniyle çalişmamizda kullandiğimiz siğir kaynakli kemik greftinin otojen kemik greftine alternatif olarak güvenilir ve etkili biçimde kullanilabileceği belirlenmiştir. © 2018 Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Dentistry., Firat University Scientific Research Projects Management Unit, This study was funded by Cumhuriyet University Scientific Research Projects Division (CUBAP) under the project code DIS 120.

The design and control of a cable-driven rehabilitation robot, which can be configured easily for exercising different articulations such as elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles without requiring any orthosis, are introduced. The passive, active-assisted and active-resisted exercises were designed and implemented using impedance control. The controller could switch between exercises according to the force feedback. The effectiveness of the proposed controller was demonstrated by experimental studies. The robot was tested first with a dummy extremity and then with a healthy subject mimicking various types of patients during the tests. Experimental results showed that satisfactory closed-loop performances were achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filters are the basic and most important blocks of most signal processing applications. In many applications, a group of parallel filters are used as filter banks. Parallel filter banks naturally require much more computations. Especially on chip applications, the resources are limited and shared among many algorithms. For this purpose, many filter optimization schemes are proposed to reduce the number of resources that filtering operations require. In this work, a novel optimization algorithm is proposed to decrease the number of operations in a group of parallel filters. The filter coefficients are grouped in a two stage process which enables increased coefficient sharing between different filters. The algorithm is capable of decreasing the number of registers, look-up tables and DSP48s by up to 50\% of a regular parallel filter bank, without requiring increased sampling rate., 10 pages, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing

There are few studies in the literature that comparatively evaluate the use of intra-articular orticosteroids (CS), hyaluronic acid (HA), and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). In this study, the authors aimed to compare the clinical results of intra-articular CS, HA, and PRP injections in patients who presented to the authors' clinic with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and clinically diagnosed with TMJ-osteoarthritis. Patients were evaluated in 2 groups as those patients who felt pain on lateral (n = 31), and posterior (n = 43) palpation. Patients who were evaluated in the study were randomly assigned to 3 different treatment groups as Group 1 (PRP), Group 2 (HA), and Group 3 (CS). Pain felt on the TMJ on lateral and posterior palpation was assessed before treatment and every month for 3 months using a 5-point pain scale. Presence of crepitation, loss of function, and loss of strength were assessed before treatment and every month for 3 months. Significant changes were observed in the PRP and HA groups when the patients were evaluated according to the VAS scores evaluated at different follow-up times for TMJ pain on lateral palpation. Significant changes were observed in the PRP, HA, and CS groups when VAS scores were evaluated according to the patients' follow-up times for TMJ pain on lateral palpation. In conclusion, the findings of this study have shown that intra-articular PRP injections decreased TMJ palpation pain more effectively compared with the HA and CS groups.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of color Doppler sonography (CDS) in the diagnosis of extracranial vertebral artery dissections (EVADs). One hundred and fifty consecutive patients (age range 21–51 years, mean 44 years) with a clinical suspicion of vertebral artery dissection (VAD) were included in this study. All patients underwent CDS of vertebral arteries as the first-line imaging modality. Cervical T1-weighted fat-saturated axial MR images served as the gold standard. Of the 150 patients with a clinical suspicion of VAD, 27 patients were ultimately diagnosed with EVADs based on fat-saturated T1-weighted MR imaging. MR imaging was considered positive when crescentic hyperintensity (methemoglobin signal) was demonstrated at the wall of the vertebral artery. CDS was positive in 21 of these 27 patients and revealed either intramural hematoma or a dissecting membrane with two lumina. The most frequent site of involvement was the V1 to proximal V2 segment. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of CDS in the diagnosis of EVADs were 77.8, 98.4, 91.3, and 95.3%, respectively. CDS is a reliable diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of EVADs. © 2018, The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine.

In some non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, lipid-poor adrenal adenomas cannot be adequately differentiated from metastases using imaging methods. Invasive diagnostic procedures also have a low negative predictive value (NPV) in such cases. The current study aims to establish a specific and clinically practical metabolic parameter for lipid-poor adrenal lesions (ALs) in NSCLC patients. This diagnostic approach may prevent unnecessary abdominal enhanced computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, or invasive diagnostic procedures. Sixty-four NSCLC patients with 69 lipid-poor ALs and 28 control patients with 30 benign lipid-poor ALs, who underwent FDG-PET/CT, were retrospectively reviewed. Two morphological and four metabolic parameters were analyzed in FDG-PET/CT images of NSCLC and control patients. Baseline and post-chemotherapy images of 64 NSCLC patients were re-evaluated according to the PERCIST 1.0. In cases where ALs could not be differentiated, follow-up FDG-PET/CT images were re-examined. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve method was used for the evaluation of diagnostic parameters. Out of 69 ALs, 39 were determined as metastatic lesions (adrenal metastasis), while 30 lesions were considered non-metastatic (adrenal adenomas). The mean attenuation value, SUVmax AL/SUVmax primary tumor, SUVmax, SUVmax AL/liver, and SUVmax AL/SUVmean liver were significantly different between metastatic and benign ALs from NSCLC patients. The SUVmax AL/SUVmean liver >= 1.81 had the best positive (PPV, 94.3%) and negative (NPV, 82.4%) predictive values, and the highest specificity (93.3%), sensitivity (84.6%) and accuracy (86.9%). Lipid-poor ALs with SUVmax AL/SUVmean liver >= 1.81 can be accepted as malignant in NSCLC. However, if SUVmax AL/SUVmean liver is

Background: Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) is a minimally invasive treatment in managing unresectable liver primary neoplasms or liver metastases. Postembolization Syndrome (PES) is the most common adverse effect after TACE procedures. Objective: We investigate the risk factors for the development of PES after TACE therapy in patients with primary or metastatic liver tumors. Methods: In a retrospective analysis of 163 patients who underwent TACE between 01/01/2012 and 31/01/2018, patients that were given medication due to pain, fever, nausea or vomiting were evaluated and noted with PES. Analyses were made to evaluate factors such as age, gender, chemotherapy agent and dose, tumor size, tumor type, a particle used for embolization, multiple tumor treatments and selective application of the procedure, which may lead to PES after TACE. Results: In a total of 316 patients, PES was observed at a rate of 55 percent after TACE. Tumor size, number of tumors treated and adopting super selective fashion in the procedure were found to be related to the development of PES. No relationship was found between age, gender, presence of ascites, tumor type, size of embolic agent and drug type and the development of PES. Conclusion: A treated tumor measuring >5 cm, treating more than one tumor, and the failure to perform the procedure in a super selective fashion increase the risk of PES development after TACE.

- Abstract
Introduction: Diaphragm thickness (DT) measurement in computed tomography (CT) has become popular in recent years. Our aim was to assess the intra- and inter-observer agreement of DT measurement and to investigate the best points for DT assessment in CT based on the most reliable measurement. Methods: Thoraco-abdominal CT angiography scans of 44 patients (23 males, mean age: 49.9 +/- 17.8 years) were retrospectively evaluated. All of the CT images were evaluated independently by four radiologists. Each observer evaluated images twice to assess intra-observer reproducibility. On both axial and coronal reconstructed CT images, the crura of 88 hemidiaphragms were measured at five different points. A p value less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Intra- and inter-observer agreement was evaluated by using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) scores with a 95% confidence interval. Results: In intra-observer analysis, ICC scores demonstrated substantial to almost perfect agreement for all measurements (ICC score range: 0.758-1). When we analyzed the inter-observer agreement, there was a moderate to almost perfect agreement for each measurement point (ICC score range: 0.523-0.895). All axial measurements showed the highest inter-observer agreement (ICC scores were 0.926 and 0.886 for first and second measurements, respectively). The maximum inter- and intra-observer agreement for single point DT measurements were found in maximum DT at the level of the origin of the celiac artery and in anterior DT at the level of the upper part of the L1 vertebral body. Conclusion: CT is a reliable tool DT measurement with excellent intra- and inter-observer agreement. - Abstract
Early detection of adverse effects of novel compunds during drug discovery and development most probably reduce late stage failures, expenses and exertions for candidate drugs. Although the micronucleus (MN) test is one of the oldest techniques used in biochemical sciences for drug discovery. Flexibility of the technique for both in vitro and in vivo applications and practicability for large scale samples in short time make the MN test an inevitable tool for chemical trails. Drug studies require a formulation that provides the highest exposure to detect clastogenic and aneugenic activities and thus analysis makes it possible to get the necessary safety margin to support clinical trials. The MN test is one of the most important tools of the genotoxicity test battery in preclinical studies to identify negative effects of compounds that induce numerical and structural chromosome alterations in wide spectrum concentrations. The MN assay can be applied various cell types in different protocols. For instance; the most recommended protocols are bone the marrow micronucleus analysis and the in vivo mammalian erythrocyte precursor assay. Also, the rodent ovary cells validation test is a very powerful approach to analyse side effects of a compound. Beside cell types, detection systems can be constituted to obtain a high throughput screening such as integrating flow cytometry analysis into the MN inspections. Since a new compound is needed for such an assay, the MN test can assess abnormalities earlier in the drug discovery pipeline, making structure/genotoxicity connection a possible system for drug characterization., Part of ISBN 9781536166798QC 20201207

- Abstract
Irrigation of industrial effluents may end in the bioaccumulation of various toxic metals and consequent genetic changes in contaminated food crops. To test this hypothesis and extent of genetic modifications, Allium cepa test was performed to food crops viz. tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) and chili (Capsicum annum) as Allium cepa test is a useful tool to assess genetic variations in plants. Prior to A. cepa test, the plants were exposed to various metal concentrations 125–1000 mg/L in the synthetic wastewater. The extracts of harvested plants were used to grow the root of A. cepa following its standard method. The root tips were fixed, stained and examined under compound microscope (almost 300–400 dividing cells) to check the extent of chromosomal variations during various stages of mitosis. The results revealed various chromosomal abnormalities including laggards, stickiness, vagrant chromosomes, binucleated cells, nuclear lesions, giant cells and c-mitosis at different level of treatment. On the whole, aberrations were increasing with the increasing doses along the positive control. In comparison, chili crop had higher level of aberrations depicting the higher chromosomal changes. Lower mitotic index (MI) with increasing level of doses was also describing the hampered cell division due to increased metal stress. The study is showing that the cell division was ceased with increasing metal stress thus increasing the rate of cell aberrations.

Nutrient utilization, hematological indices and growth performance of Labeo rohita fingerlings were examined while substituting fish meal with almond meal-based diet. Five diets were prepared by substituting different levels such as 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of fish meal with almond meal in diets. Test diets were allocated to each fish group by using completely randomized design (CRD). In triplicate tanks, fifteen L. rohita fingerlings were kept and fed at 5% of their body weight. Growth indices such as weight gain (%), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and standard growth rate (SGR) were evaluated using standard formulae. Nutrient utilization was determined by proximate analysis of feces. There was significant difference (p=0.05) among hematological indices and growth performance of fingerlings fed 40% almond meal-based diet and control diet. By increasing almond meal in diets more than 40%, the hemoglobin and RBCs of fish indicated a significant (p=0.05) inverse correlation. The outcomes of present study revealed that replacement of fish meal by almond meal in fish feed is cost effective with significant improvement in growth response, nutrient digestibility and hematology. BACKGROUND: In a randomized, controlled trial that compared liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue, with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk who were receiving usual care, we found that liraglutide resulted in lower risks of the primary end point (nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) and death. However, the long-term effects of liraglutide on renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown. METHODS: We report the prespecified secondary renal outcomes of that randomized, controlled trial in which patients were assigned to receive liraglutide or placebo. The secondary renal outcome was a composite of new-onset persistent macroalbuminuria, persistent doubling of the serum creatinine level, end-stage renal disease, or death due to renal disease. The risk of renal outcomes was determined with the use of time-to-event analyses with an intention-to-treat approach. Changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria were also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 9340 patients underwent randomization, and the median follow-up of the patients was 3.84 years. The renal outcome occurred in fewer participants in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group (268 of 4668 patients vs. 337 of 4672; hazard ratio, 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67 to 0.92; P=0.003). This result was driven primarily by the new onset of persistent macroalbuminuria, which occurred in fewer participants in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group (161 vs. 215 patients; hazard ratio, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.91; P=0.004). The rates of renal adverse events were similar in the liraglutide group and the placebo group (15.1 events and 16.5 events per 1000 patient-years), including the rate of acute kidney injury (7.1 and 6.2 events per 1000 patient-years, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This prespecified secondary analysis shows that, when added to usual care, liraglutide resulted in lower rates of the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease than placebo. Many structural and functional damages are observed in cells and tissues in these kinds of injuries. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of picroside II on lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte deformability during I/R in rats. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into four groups – each containing six animals (sham, I/R, sham + picroside II, and I/R + picroside II). The infrarenal section of the abdominal aorta was occluded with an atraumatic microvascular clamp in I/R groups. The clamp was removed after 120minutes and reperfusion was provided for a further 120 minutes. Picroside II (10 mg·kg-1) was administered intraperitoneally to the animals in the appropriate groups (sham + picroside II, I/R + picroside II groups). All rats were euthanized by intraperitoneal administration of ketamine (100 mg·kg-1) and taking blood from the abdominal aorta. Erythrocytes were extracted from heparinized complete blood samples. Buffer (PT) and then erythrocytes (PE) were passed through the filtration system and the changes in pressure were measured to investigate the role of serum malondialdehyde and nitric oxide (NO) in lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte deformability index. Results: Deformability index was significantly increased in the I/R group compared to groups sham, sham + picroside-II, and I/R + picroside-II (P

The coins which are the subject of this article were seized in 1992 at the Edirne Kapıkule Border in the car of a Turkish citizen who was departing to smuggle the coins abroad. 135 bronze coins seized by customs officials are currently in Edirne Museum. The coins are for the most part minted by Cilician cities. The largest number is from Elaiussa Sebaste, and a large number is from the mints of Corycus and Seleucia on the Calycadnus. Other coins come from Tarsus, Hierapolis-Castabala, Soloi-Pompeiopolis, Selinus, Anazarbus, Anemurium, Aegeae, Mopsus, Flaviopolis. The composition of the group suggests that it may be a hoard, probably uncovered in the area of Elaiussa Sebaste in Cilicia Tracheia, and witnesses a regional pattern of coin circulation that can be observed in the behavior of excavation coins, museum collections and other hoards uncovered in the region. Only two coins, one from Apamaea in Phrygia and another from Aradus in Phoenicia witness a broader area of circulation. The coins are as a whole homogeneous from a chronological point of view, almost all belonging to issues dated between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC; however, there are a few exceptions of imperial times to the end of the 2nd cent. AD.
