202. Mottled ducks, feral mallards, and their hybrids in Florida

Abstract

The nonmigratory and endemic Florida mottled duck (Anas fulvigula fulvigula) is facing conservation threats from the combined effects of urbanization and introgressive hybridization with feral mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and mallard x mottled duck hybrids. In the past, the status of the Florida mottled duck population was assessed during annual aerial surveys and most brown ducks (mottled ducks, mallards, and hybrids of them) detected during the survey would have been mottled ducks. But the release of domesticated mallards for aesthetic purposes has led to increases in the prevalence of mallards‐hybrids (mallards or mallard x mottled duck hybrids) throughout peninsular Florida, USA, and because it is impossible to differentiate among mottled ducks, female mallards, and hybrids during aerial surveys, helicopter surveys were halted in 2009 until state researchers could conduct a range‐wide study to determine what proportion of brown ducks are mottled ducks versus mallards‐hybrids. We used plumage keys and high‐resolution photography to categorize brown ducks from 557 wetland grid points as either mottled ducks or mallards‐hybrids. Of the 5,179 brown ducks categorized, 40.1% were mottled ducks and 59.9% were mallards‐hybrids. We used logistic regression analysis to model the interactive effect of a site's latitude and level of urbanization (urban gradient value within a 2‐km buffer) to generate a predictive raster surface (1‐km resolution) of the study area with values corresponding to the probability that a brown duck observed within a cell is a pure mottled duck. Predicted values will be used as correction factors when estimating final mottled duck population abundance from brown‐duck survey data. Additionally, the predictive raster surface will be used to identify wetlands where mottled ducks remain predominant so that these sites can be targeted for preservation. Overall, mallards‐hybrids outnumbered mottled ducks throughout most of peninsular Florida, especially in more urbanized regions, and their current prevalence rate presents a serious conservation threat, via hybridization, to extant mottled duck populations. 218. The Cashless Debit Card and rights of persons with disabilities

Abstract

The Cashless Debit Card (CDC) was triggered by a recommendation in the 2014 Forrest Review, ostensibly to address substance abuse and gambling issues. The CDC applies to a broad range of social security payments, defined as ‘trigger’ payments, including a Disability Support Pension (DSP). This article contends that people with disabilities are likely to encounter a range of specific issues with the CDC, and that the scheme squares poorly with Australia's international human rights obligations to persons with disabilities. We argue that the CDC has pernicious effects in terms of deprivation of autonomy, subjection to stigma and denial of dignity.

ABSTRACTIntroduction:Conventional immunosuppressive drugs, anti-TNF alpha treatments and biotherapies are increasingly being used in non-infectious uveitis.Areas covered:The present work was led by a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including internal medicine specialists, rheumatologists and ophthalmologists, and proposes an extensive review on the use of biological agents in non-infectious uveitis.Expert opinion:In case of dependency to steroids or sight-threatening disease, conventional immunosuppressive drugs (methotrexate, azathioprine and mycophenolate mofetil) and/or biological therapies such as anti-TNF alpha treatments (adalimumab, infliximab) can be used to achieve and maintain disease quiescence. Interferon is an efficient immunomodulatory drug that can be proposed as second-line therapy in specific indications (eg. refractory macular edema, sight-threatening Behçet’s uveitis). Other biologics, especially tocilizumab, are showing promising results.Local treatments (steroids, sirolimus etc.) can be used as adjuvant therapies in case of unilateral relapse. Therapeutic response must always be evaluated by clinical examination and appropriate ancillary investigations.

220. Influence of livelihood functional diversity on agro-food systems in rural communities from different macro regions of Brazil

Abstract

Urbanization has changed the livelihood diversity of rural communities worldwide. This study aimed to fit an indicator of the functional diversity of livelihood activities to assess the heterogeneity of socioeconomic conditions and their influence on agro-food changes in rural communities in Brazil. This study was conducted in three macro regions of Brazil, through semi-structured questionnaire interviews conducted in 1012 households to verify details about food patterns, self-consumption farms, and socioeconomic conditions. Data from questionnaires were analyzed using multivariate statistical models to appraise similarities among communities and determine the relative influence of socioeconomic factors on agro-food patterns. Specific socioeconomic status and use of natural resource data were analyzed while adjusting for Petchey and Gaston’s indicator of functional diversity to evaluate the heterogeneity of local livelihood activities and socioeconomic conditions. This indicator summarizes the proportional livelihood richness in all sampled places, as better conditions for survival were found in specific localities of the central-west and eastern Amazon regions of Brazil. We also verified that the remote areas of the Goiás and Pará states were regions with the most significant maintenance of traditional food habits and use of natural resources. Although these results do not allow us to establish that all of these areas are undergoing an agro-food transition process, some localities are more likely than others to adjust their livelihood strategies to face global food changes. This interdisciplinary approach facilitated the identification of the most similar groups regarding their livelihoods and socioeconomic conditions that influenced the agro-food transition process in rural regions.

Introduction: Anterior scleritis is defined as an inflammation of the sclera, located anteriorly to the equator of the eye. Cotrimoxazole is an antibiotic with an immunomodulatory action. Exegesis. In case of idiopathic anterior scleritis or scleritis associated with autoimmune diseases, immunosuppressive treatment is often required. We report on six patients with anterior idiopathic scleritis non sensitive to local treatment where cotrimoxazole improved or cured the symptoms. Conclusion: Cotrimoxazole seems to be an interesting therapeutic treatment in non threatening anterior scleritis.

Abstract

MUSHRA listening tests for the evaluation of audio coded material often include speech stimuli in a language the listener does not understand. It is not clear, however, how a lack of understanding of that language and its phonemes can influence the listener's behavior and his or her quality ratings during the test. In a study including German and Mandarin Chinese speaking listeners, as well as test material in these two languages, we analyzed how ratings and listening times were affected by the foreign language. Pooled over all conditions, we found no significant differences between the ratings. However, for items of high audio quality we observed that compared to the respective native listeners, German listeners evaluating Chinese items or Chinese listeners assessing German items needed longer listening times and made more effort comparing different audio signals. Abstract

Introduction The off-label use of TNF antagonists in refractory sarcoidosis is increasingly reported but data on their efficacy and safety are still insufficient. Objective To report on efficacy and safety of TNF antagonists in severe and refractory sarcoidosis. Methods Examination of retrospective demographic, clinical, therapeutic, and adverse event data on 132 sarcoidosis patients (58% women; mean (min–max) age = 45.5 (14–78) years) given TNF antagonists (mainly infliximab, 91%) and investigation of response-linked factors. Results The overall clinical response (complete and partial) rate was 64%. TNF-antagonist efficacy (i.e., significant decrease of the ePOST score) was noted in cases with neurologic, heart, skin, and upper respiratory tract involvements. No significant difference in efficacy was found between anti-TNF used alone and TNF with immunosuppressant. The use of anti-TNF allowed reducing prednisone dosage at end of follow-up ( p < 0.001). Adverse events were observed in 52% of the patients; they included infections (36%) and allergic reactions (8%) and required treatment interruption in 31 cases (23%). When TNF antagonists were interrupted, 13 patients experienced relapses within 14 months on average (median follow-up: 20.5 months). Conclusion TNF antagonists were efficacious in about two-thirds of patients with severe/refractory sarcoidosis but their use led to a high rate of adverse events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

245. Microstructural Modeling of Composite Cathodes for All-Solid-State Batteries

Abstract

When it comes to energy density, all-solid-state batteries are seen as a promising technology for next-generation electrochemical storage devices. Nevertheless, the performance of all-solid-state cells is still very limited. The reasons are manifold, with insufficient ionic and electronic percolation within the composite cathode being a crucial one. In this work, we investigate percolation characteristics by three-dimensional microstructural modeling with the aim to define and understand boundary conditions for well-percolating networks. Utilizing spherical active material particles together with convex polyhedra as the solid electrolyte, ionic and electronic conduction clusters are determined and analyzed by means of percolation theory for varying macroscopic parameters, such as composition, porosity, particle size, and electrode thickness. Small active material particles turn out to enhance the effective electronic conductivity, offering high surface areas and thus more possibilities to connect particles, while porosity crucially affects ionic and electronic conduction capabilities. An impact of electrode thickness on the effective electronic conductivity is observed exclusively in thin electrodes, where percolation effects are suppressed implying favorable electrode properties. From microstructural modeling, ideal compositions are derived and guidelines for electrode design are developed at a given porosity and particle size of active material and solid electrolyte.

246. Cryopreserved Saphenous Vein Compared With PTFE Graft for Use as Modified Blalock-Taussig or Central Shunt in Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract

Many infants with congenital heart disease undergo palliative shunt procedures. In our center, cryopreserved saphenous vein and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are used as grafts to construct these shunts. In this retrospective review, we compare morbidity, mortality, and freedom from reoperation associated with the use of these graft materials. We conducted a retrospective study of 136 consecutive patients who were palliated with shunts between 2006 and 2015. A total of 136 patients were identified, 9 had incomplete data; thus, 127 patients were included: 69 saphenous and 58 PTFE. The cohorts were matched with respect to birth weight, gestational age, age and weight at time of surgery, and underlying cardiac condition. There were 15 (12%) deaths in the study cohort with no intraoperative mortality. Thrombosis was seen in 5.2% (2/38) of the saphenous modified Blalock-Taussig shunt (mBTS) group and 20.6% (14/68) of those with PTFE mBTS. There was no thrombosis in the central shunt group. Freedom from reoperation was 83% in the saphenous vein group and 81% in the PTFE group. There was no difference in overall morbidity or mortality, although thrombosis was significantly less in the saphenous vein group. Cryopreserved saphenous vein is a safe alternative, either as a mBTS or as a central shunt.

Abstract

Cogan's syndrome is an inflammatory disease that is characterized by ocular inflammation (typically interstitial keratitis) and is associated with Ménière-like vestibuloauditory dysfunction. Ocular inflammation usually resolves after several weeks or months but deafness is often irreversible. We report on a case of Cogan's syndrome in a 23-year-old woman who initially presented with bilateral anterior uveitis, an unusual clinical feature for this disease. We discuss the clinical aspects, the pathogenic mechanisms, the laboratory investigations, the differential diagnosis, and the treatment of Cogan's syndrome., Le syndrome de Cogan est une maladie inflammatoire caractérisée par une atteinte oculaire (typiquement une kératite interstitielle) associée à une symptomatologie cochléo-vestibulaire similaire à celle de la maladie de Ménière. L'évolution de la kératite interstitielle est habituellement très favorable tandis que la surdité profonde est souvent définitive. Nous rapportons le cas d'une jeune femme de 23 ans dont l'atteinte oculaire initiale était une uvéite antérieure bilatérale, manifestation oculaire atypique du syndrome de Cogan. À la lumière de cette observation, nous discutons les caractéristiques cliniques, la pathogénie, les moyens diagnostiques, le diagnostic différentiel et le traitement du syndrome de Cogan.
