The transmission pathways of Helicobacter pylori in humans have not been fully elucidated. Research in the last decade has proposed that foodborne transmission, among others, may be a plausible route of human infection. Owing to the organism's fastidious growth characteristics and its ability to convert to viable, yet unculturable states upon exposure to stress conditions, the detection of H. pylori in foods via culture-dependent methods has been proven to be laborious, difficult and in most cases unsuccessful. Hence, nucleic acid-based methods have been proposed as alternative methods but, to date, only PCR-based methods have been reported in the literature. In the current study, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used for the detection of H. pylori in raw, bulk-tank bovine milk. After repeated milk centrifugation and washing steps, the bacterial flora of raw milk was subjected to fixation and permeabilization and H. pylori detection was conducted by FISH after hybridization with an H. pylori-specific 16S rRNA-directed fluorescent oligonucleotide probe. Using this protocol, H. pylori was detected in four out of the twenty (20%) raw milk samples examined. We evaluated the prognostic and predictive utility of β-tubulin isotype III (TUBB3) tumour gene transcription in early breast cancer patients enrolled in a randomised study. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied for assessment of TUBB3, ER, PgR, HER2 and MAPT messenger RNA and immunohistochemistry (IHC) for protein expression in 314 patients enrolled in trial HE10/97, evaluating epirubicin-alkylator adjuvant chemotherapy with or without paclitaxel. High TUBB3 mRNA status was associated with advanced T stage, high histological grade, low mRNA and protein levels of ER, PgR and MAPT, and high levels of HER2 (p < 0.001). At a median follow-up of 98 months, multivariate analysis showed high TUBB3 mRNA status to have prognostic significance for DFS (HR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.25-2.68, p = 0.002) and OS (HR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.03-2.83, p = 0.038), along with the number of involved axillary nodes, PgR mRNA status and tumour grade. TUBB3 mRNA levels did not predict benefit from inclusion of paclitaxel in adjuvant chemotherapy (test for interaction p = 0.96 for OS, p = 0.46 for DFS). Transcriptional activity of β-tubulin isotype III in early breast cancer is an adverse prognostic factor, though not a predictive one for taxane efficacy.

Purpose: This phase II study sought to evaluate the efficacy of the paclitaxel-carboplatin combination as neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC)., Patients and Methods: A total of 46 patients with LABC and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) received 6 cycles of paclitaxel 175 mg/m2, followed by carboplatin, at an area under the curve of 6, before mastectomy. The primary endpoint constituted response to chemotherapy. We studied ERCC1 protein, microtubule-associated protein-tau, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), HER2, and Ki-67 immunohistochemically in tissue microarray and whole-tissue sections. In addition, EGFR and HER2 gene status was assessed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Predictive and prognostic molecular markers were retrospectively investigated., Results: A total of 42 female patients were considered eligible. Forty percent had IBC. Twenty-five patients (60%) experienced a clinical response, and 4 patients (9.5%) experienced a pathologic complete response. Chemotherapy was well tolerated. After a median follow-up of 45 months (range, 8.8-64.8 months), the estimated 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 54%, and the 3-year overall survival (OS) was 66%. The overexpression of EGFR protein was associated with a lower response rate (0 vs. 67%; P = .023), whereas high Ki-67 expression, high-grade tumors, tumor stage T4, and triple-negative tumors were associated with poorer PFS. Only high-grade tumors were associated with a significantly shorter OS (P = .004)., Conclusion: The combination of paclitaxel and carboplatin is an effective and well-tolerated regimen in female patients with LABC.

Purpose: Patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (RM-SCCHN) bear a grave prognosis. There are unmet needs for the development of novel agents for this incurable disease. Angiogenesis is an important biological process in SCCHN. We, therefore, evaluated the activity and safety of sunitinib, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets multiple receptors, in patients with RM-SCCHN., Patients and Methods: Seventeen patients were treated with sunitinib 50 mg per day administrated in 4-week cycles followed by a rest period of 2 weeks. Sunitinib and SU012662 plasma levels were determined based on a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method and pharmacokinetic data were fitted in a non-compartmental analysis., Results: Totally, 28 6-week cycles of treatment with sunitinib were administered (median, 2 cycles). Only three patients demonstrated stabilization of the disease; therefore, the study had to be terminated prematurely due to futility. Grade 3 toxicities, apart from fatigue, were infrequent. Other frequently reported side effects were skin discoloration, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. Ten various bleeding complications were reported in seven patients. Mean maximum concentrations (C(max)) were reached during the first day of treatment for sunitinib at 38.98 (+ or - 22.66) ng/ml and for SU012662 at 11.12 (+ or - 24.57) ng/ml. Our results showed that SU012662 has a longer half-life and a larger volume of distribution than the parent drug sunitinib. None of the biological markers tested was of any prognostic value., Conclusions: According to our findings, sunitinib monotherapy was not proven active in RM-SCCHN, and no further development of the drug in this indication is warranted.

Background and Aim. EGFR is commonly expressed in cancers of the head and neck (H and N), and anti-EGFR agents have demonstrated improvements in outcomes (TTP and OS). The aim of this study was to determine EGFR gene status in H and N cancer patients treated with gefitinib and to correlate mutational status with clinico-pathological data and response. Patients and Methods. Patients with histologically confirmed H and N cancer having failed prior treatment for advanced disease entered this compassionate-use-program. Nineteen patients received gefitinib. EGFR expression was assessed by IHC, gene copy number by FISH, and mutation analysis was conducted for EGFR (18-21), KRAS, BRAF (V600E), and HER-2 exon 20. An additional TKI naive cohort of 73 patients was also screened. Results. Mutations were detected in 6/19 patients (3× EGFR, 1× KRAS, and 2× HER2-exon 20). There were no significant differences in TTP or OS for patients with somatic EGFR mutations. No BRAF mutations were detected. Conclusions. The incidence of EGFR mutations in H and N cancer in this study was 5.3%. No statistically relevant correlations between mutation or gene gain and response or survival were observed. Due to the limited number of patients and low incidence of genetic aberrations in the genes analyzed, additional studies are warranted.

Background: Thymidylate synthase (TS) and Topoisomerase I (Topo I) are significant biomarkers in colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to study the expression of TS and Topo I in patients with resected CRC who received adjuvant chemotherapy and correlated it with clinical outcome., Methods: All patients diagnosed with CRC between 1989 and 2007 and treated with adjuvant chemotherapy within Hellenic Cooperative Oncology Group's (HeCOG) protocols, were identified. Archival paraffin-embedded tumor tissues were used for immunohistochemical detection of TS and Topo I. Immunohistochemistry was performed on tissue microarray slides using monoclonal antibodies against TS and Topo I. The results were correlated with survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS)., Results: A cohort of 498 patients with a median age of 61 years and Dukes' stage B (49%) and C (51%) fulfilled the criteria of the study. All patients received adjuvant 5-FU-based chemotherapy, 38% irinotecan-containing. Positive TS and Topo I expression was found in 43% and 48% of cases, respectively. Five-year OS was 74% and DFS was 68%. In univariate analysis no association of TS and Topo I expression with OS and DFS was identified. In multivariate analysis however, Topo I expression was associated with a reduced risk of death (HR = 0.61, 95% CI 0.42-0.88, p = 0.009). In the irinotecan-treated subgroup, those patients who expressed Topo I had a better OS (HR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.23-0.94, p = 0.033)., Conclusion: Patients with resected CRC expressing Topo I seem to benefit from irinotecan-containing adjuvant chemotherapy. However randomised prospective trials are needed to confirm these results.

Scattered reports in the literature have shown that Cyclin D1 mRNA and protein may be expressed in anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). ALCLs are characterized by the presence of ALK translocations. Aberrant Cyclin D1 expression seems to promote proliferation in other types of lymphoma, while a growth promoting CCND1/TACSD1(TROP2) fusion product has also been described in tumors. Herein, we investigated 44 ALCL cases for chromosome 11 and CCND1 status (by FISH), cyclin D1 mRNA expression (by in situ hybridization and RT-PCR) and Cyclin D1 protein (by immunohistochemistry with two different monoclonal antibodies), as well as for the expression of Trop-2/GA733-1 (by immunohistochemistry). Polysomy of CCND1 (11q13) and chromosome 11 was found in 15/38 evaluated cases (39.5%). This change was specific for CD30+ neoplastic cells, as shown by double fluorescent staining. Neoplastic cells in the majority of ALCL expressed cyclin D1 mRNA (29/41 [70.7%]), in association with the presence of ALK translocations (p=0.024) and systemic, rather than cutaneous disease (p=0.021). Remarkably, however, Cyclin D1 protein was not detected in neoplastic cells (0/44 cases), neither were these found positive for Trop-2. In conclusion, aberrant copies of CCND1 / chromosome 11 may be observed in ALCL, probably as a consequence of the reported ploidy changes in these tumors. ALCL may often express cyclin D1 mRNA, which, however, does not result in the production of functional Cyclin D1 protein or Trop-2, suggesting that these proteins do not play a role in the pathogenesis of ALCL.

We report a 30-year-old male patient with two unicameral bone cysts (UBC) simultaneously located in the proximal third of the right femur and ipsilateral ischium ramus, respectively. Fine needle biopsies were attempted for both lesions. Biopsy of the femoral lesion under local anesthesia was unsuccessful, so an open biopsy was performed which confirmed the diagnosis of UBC. Biopsy of the ischial lesion was not sufficient for diagnosis. Cytological examination of both specimens showed no other benign or malignant pathology. The femoral lesion was treated with intralesional (due to its large size) excision-curettage, bone grafting, and the introduction of a long gamma locking intramedullary nail to prevent the occurrence of a pathological fracture. The ischial lesion was left untreated and followed conservatively. The patient was free of any symptoms and complications three years postoperatively. This is the first report of an adult patient with UBCs simultaneously located both in a long tubular bone (femur) and a flat bone (ischium ramus).

Background: Induction chemotherapy (IC) followed by concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) has the potential of being an ideal multi-modality approach for improving the prognosis of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SSCHN)., Patients and Methods: Thirty-four patients with locally advanced SCCHN were treated with 3 cycles of IC, consisting of docetaxel 75 mg/m2 and cisplatin 75 mg/m2 every 3 weeks, followed 3-4 weeks later by definitive radiotherapy (70 Gy) and concomitant weekly cisplatin 40 mg/m2., Results: After a median follow-up of 27.7 months, 6-month progression-free survival (PFS), the primary study end-point, was 84%. The median PFS was 16.4 months and median overall survival 24.4 months. The majority of the patients completed 3 cycles to moderate toxicity. Anemia, nausea/vomiting and mucositis were the prominent toxicities during CCRT. Retrospective analysis of a panel of biomarkers suggested that excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) protein expression was associated with shorter PFS., Conclusion: IC followed by CCRT, as administered in the present study, is a feasible and well-tolerated therapeutic approach. However, its real impact on the prognosis of SCCHN patients has to be demonstrated in a randomized study comparing this treatment to CCRT alone.

Objective: Combination of trastuzumab and anthracyclines in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is precluded due to cardiotoxicity. Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) is the least cardiotoxic among the anthracyclines. We performed a phase II study of trastuzumab and PLD with biomarker evaluation., Methods: Patients with MBC and HER2 overexpression, assessed as 3+ at local laboratories, received trastuzumab 8 mg/kg as loading dose followed by 6 mg/kg in combination with PLD 30 mg/m(2), both given every 3 weeks. To be eligible, patients should have received first-line chemotherapy for MBC or should have relapsed within a year of adjuvant taxane. Tumor tissue blocks were collected for central review and exploratory biomarker evaluation. Left-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was closely monitored by cardiac ultrasound., Results: Among 37 patients, an overall response rate of 22% was observed with a progression-free survival (PFS) of 6.5 months (0.8-31.1, 95% CI 2.7-10.3) and a survival of 18.7 months (1.6-40.8, 95% CI 3.7-33.7). No decline in LVEF was noticed. Overexpression of mTOR and TOP2A gene alterations were associated with better PFS. PTEN gene deletion was associated with resistance to treatment., Conclusion: Trastuzumab combined with PLD every 3 weeks is feasible, effective and safe in HER2-positive patients., (Copyright 2009 S. Concomitant administration of radiotherapy with cisplatin or radiotherapy with cetuximab appear to be the treatment of choice for patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer. In the present retrospective analysis, we investigated the predictive role of several biomarkers in an unselected cohort of patients treated with concomitant radiotherapy, weekly cisplatin, and cetuximab (CCRT). We identified 37 patients treated with this approach, of which 13 (35%) achieved a complete response and 10 (27%) achieved a partial response. Severe side effects were mainly leucopenia, dysphagia, rash, and anemia. Tumor EGFR, MET, ERCC1, and p-53 protein and/or gene expression were not associated with treatment response. In contrast, high MMP9 mRNA expression was found to be significantly associated with objective response. In conclusion, CCRT is feasible and active. MMP9 was the only biomarker tested that appears to be of predictive value in cetuximab treated patients. However, this is a hypothesis generating study and the results should not be viewed as definitive evidence until they are validated in a larger cohort.

Background: Coexistence of adenocarcinoma and mantle cell lymphoma in the same or different anatomical sites is extremely rare. We present a case of incidental discovery of primary lung adenocarcinoma and mantle cell lymphoma involving the pleura, during an axillary thoracotomy performed for a benign condition., Case Presentation: A 73-year old male underwent bullectomy and apical pleurectomy for persistent pneumothorax. A bulla of the lung apex was resected en bloc with a scar-like lesion of the lung, which was located in proximity with the bulla origin, by a wide wedge resection. Histologic examination of the stripped-off parietal pleura and of the bullectomy specimen revealed the synchronous occurrence of two distinct neoplasms, a lymphoma infiltrating the pleura and a primary, early lung adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical and fluorescence in situ hybridization assays were performed. The morphologic, immunophenotypic and genetic findings supported the diagnosis of primary lung adenocarcinoma (papillary subtype) coexisting with a non-Hodgkin, B-cell lineage, mantle cell lymphoma involving both, visceral and parietal pleura and without mediastinal lymph node involvement. The neoplastic lymphoid cells showed the characteristic immunophenotype of mantle cell lymphoma and the translocation t(11;14). The patient received 6 cycles of chemotherapy, while pulmonary function tests precluded further pulmonary parenchyma resection (lobectomy) for his adenocarcinoma. The patient is alive and without clinical and radiological findings of local recurrence or distant relapse from both tumors 14 months later., Conclusion: This is the first reported case of a rare tumoral combination involving simultaneously lung and pleura, emphasizing at the incidental discovery of the two coexisting neoplasms during a procedure performed for a benign condition. Any tissue specimen resected during operations performed for non-tumoral conditions should be routinely sent for pathologic examination.

The combination of gemcitabine and gefitinib was evaluated in advanced pancreatic cancer. Totally, 53 patients were treated with a 7 week cycle of gemcitabine (1,000 mg/m(2) given weekly) followed by six 4 week cycles of gemcitabine given on days 1, 8 and 15. Gefitinib 250 mg was administered daily. Responses were seen in 6, and stabilization of the disease in 12 patients. The main toxicity was myelotoxicity (92%). The 6-month progression-free survival (PFS) was 30%. Median PFS was 4.1 months and median survival 7.3 months with a 1 year survival rate of 27%. The above combination demonstrated promising activity in advanced pancreatic cancer.

Background: The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is over-expressed in 70-75% of colorectal adenocarcinomas (CRC). The anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody cetuximab has been approved for the treatment of metastatic CRC, however tumor response to cetuximab has not been found to be associated with EGFR over-expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The aim of this study was to explore EGFR and the downstream effector phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) as potential predictors of response to cetuximab., Methods: CRC patients treated with cetuximab by the Hellenic Cooperative Oncology group, whose formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissue was available, were included. Tissue was tested for EGFR and PTEN by IHC and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)., Results: Eighty-eight patients were identified and 72 were included based on the availability of tissue blocks with adequate material for analysis on them. All patients, except one, received cetuximab in combination with chemotherapy. Median follow-up was 53 months from diagnosis and 17 months from cetuximab initiation. At the time of the analysis 53% of the patients had died. Best response was complete response in one and partial response in 23 patients. In 16 patients disease stabilized. Lack of PTEN gene amplification was associated with more responses to cetuximab and longer time to progression (p = 0.042)., Conclusion: PTEN could be one of the molecular determinants of cetuximab response. Due to the heterogeneity of the population and the retrospective nature of the study, our results are hypothesis generating and should be approached with caution. Further prospective studies are needed to validate this finding.

HER2-positive breast cancer is characterized by aggressive growth and poor prognosis. Women with metastatic breast cancer with over-expression of HER2 protein or excessive presence of HER2 gene copies are potential candidates for Herceptin (Trastuzumab) targeted treatment that binds to HER2 receptors on tumor cells and inhibits tumor cell growth. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is one of the most widely used methods to determine HER2 status. Typically, evaluation of FISH images involves manual counting of FISH signals in multiple images, a time consuming and error prone procedure. Recently, we developed novel software for the automated evaluation of FISH images and, in this study, we present the first testing of this software on images from two separate research clinics. To our knowledge, this is the first concurrent evaluation of any FISH image analysis software in two different clinics. The evaluation shows that the developed FISH image analysis software can accelerate evaluation of HER2 status in most breast cancer cases.

Immunohistochemical expression of bcl-2, p53, PR and ER in cases with endometrial carcinomas arrayed on a tissue microarray (TMA) was tested and correlated with clinicopathologic features, overall survival (OS), cancer-related survival (CRS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Seventy-seven patients with endometrial cancer were reviewed. Slides were evaluated by two pathologists blinded to patient clinical characteristics and survival data. Mean age of patients was 62.5 years (range 35-80), median follow up 60 months (range 9-120). Seventy-nine percent of patients were FIGO Stage I; 39% of the cases showed bcl-2 cytoplasmic staining and its expression was significantly correlated with low-grade tumor differentiation and age < or = 60 years. Nuclear p53 overexpression was detected in 23.4% of the cases and was significantly correlated with advanced stages (IIB-IV), non-endometrioid histology, nodal metastasis and advanced age (> 60 years). PR and ER were positive in 63.6% and 30% of the cases, respectively. Analysis of p53 overexpression and bcl-2 expression in relationship with PR and ER status showed a direct correlation between bcl-2 expression and PR positivity (p = 0.001). In a multivariate analysis FIGO staging was the only clinicopathologic parameter independently correlated with DFS. In conclusion p53 overexpression was directly associated with unfavorable clinicopathologic factors such as advanced stage, histologic subtype, advanced patient age and nodal metastasis. Bcl-2 expression was related with younger age, favorable grade and PR expression by tumor cells. Patient survival was not related to the tested biomarkers.

Background: Clinical studies have shown that temozolomide (TMZ) and irinotecan demonstrate activity in high grade astrocytic tumors (HGAT). However, the optimal schedule of administration is unknown., Patients and Methods: In the present study, a total of 45 HGAT patients, 38 with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and 7 with anaplastic astrocytoma (AA), were treated with TMZ, 150 mg/m(2) on days 1-5, followed by irinotecan, 150 mg/m(2) on days 6 and 17, every 4 weeks for 6 cycles or until the occurrence of unacceptable toxicity or disease progression. Radiation therapy (60 Gy) was initiated on the first day of treatment., Results: Twenty-two patients completed six cycles of treatment. Most frequently recorded side-effects included neutropenia (37%), nausea/vomiting (66%), diarrhea (31%) and infection (44%). Five episodes of vaso-occlusive disease, all of them fatal, were observed. After a median follow-up of 49.8 months, median progression-free survival for patients with GBM was 7.7 months, while median overall survival was 12.8 months. There were six long-term survivors, three of them with GBM. Two out of the five biomarkers studied, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C), were found to be overexpressed in 74% of the tumors, however they had no predictive value for progression-free or overall survival., Conclusion: The combination of TMZ and irinotecan, as administered in this study, was accompanied by high rates of toxicity, especially myelotoxicity and infection. Further development of this regimen in the treatment of HGAT is not recommended.

The expression of hTERT and its isoforms is difficult to assess in lymphoma tissues with the commonly used reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methods, because non-neoplastic lymphocytes expressing hTERT are always present in the lymphomatous infiltrates. The present study aimed to investigate hTERT mRNA variants in anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) (n = 38) with in situ hybridization (ISH), along with the immunodetection of hTERT protein. Probes for the identification of mRNAs containing (Bplus) and lacking (Bdel) exons 7 and 8 of the hTERT mRNA were used. Normal lymphocyte populations equally expressed both Bplus and Bdel mRNAs. Although all ALCL examined were found positive for hTERT expression with RT-PCR, hTERT mRNAs were identified in 68% of these tumors with ISH, with a higher incidence in the group bearing ALK translocations (10 out of 11; 90.9%) compared to the ALK negative group (17 out of 27; 59.3%) (PPearson's = 0.002). The same results were obtained with immunohistochemistry for hTERT. In approximately 50% of cases, only Bplus positive cells were identified, again with a higher incidence in the ALK positive compared to the ALK negative group (PPearson's = 0.016). In conclusion, ISH for hTERT mRNAs appears to be a valuable tool for the investigation of hTERT expression in lymphomas. Aberrations in hTERT variant profiles and a decline in the expression of the B deleted isoform may be associated with the pathogenesis of ALCL, especially with respect to ALK positive tumors.

We assessed the usefulness of several immunohistochemical stains in distinguishing these two neoplasms, including cytokeratin 7, cytokeratin 20 (CK20), neuron-specific enolase, chromogranin, synaptophysin, neurofilaments (NF), thyroid-transcription factor-1 (TTF-1), CD56 antigen, S-100 protein, vimentin, c-erbB-2 oncoprotein, and CD117 antigen. All 13 cases of Merkel cell carcinoma evaluated were positive for CK20, and negative for TTF-1. Twelve of 13 Merkel cell carcinoma cases were positive for NF. Eleven of 13 cases of small cell lung carcinoma were positive for TTF-1. All small cell lung carcinoma cases were negative for NF, and all but one were negative for CK20. In terms of the remaining antigens, there were no differences of significance between the two neoplasms. These findings suggest that a set of three immunohistochemical stains, including CK20, NF, and TTF-1, is useful in affording a distinction between Merkel cell carcinoma and small cell lung carcinoma.

We present the fourth case of a primary pancreatic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), ALK-. An 80-year-old man was admitted to our clinic for further investigation of a fever of unknown origin. He noted anorexia, weight loss and fatigue. His laboratory tests showed anemia and a great elevation of ESR, LDH, and beta (2) microglobulin. In CT and MRI scan, a soft tissue mass in the pancreas was observed. A repeated endoscopy after his admission revealed an ulcerated mass-like deformity of the duodenal bulb. Explorative laparotomy confirmed a diffuse spread of an unresectable malignant pancreatic mass extending to the adjacent organs. Duodenal and surgical biopsies identified an ALCL of T-cell lineage, ALK-. The patient died in the Intensive Care Unit due to hemodynamic instability. Our case is the first one indicating that primary pancreatic lymphoma should be suspected in a patient with pancreatic mass and elevated serum LDH and beta(2) microglobulin.

Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein normally expressed in mesenchymal cells, but evidence is accumulating in the literature which suggests that the aberrant expression of vimentin in epithelial cancer cells might be related to local invasiveness and metastatic potential. Previous studies strongly support the implication of vimentin in the metastatic progression of breast and cervical lesions. The secretory component is isolated from human colostrum and is of help in more precise grading of endometrial carcinoma. In this study we examined vimentin and secretory component (SC) expression in adenomatous hyperplasia, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and well-differentiated adenocarcinoma (cribriform pattern). The results showed decreased expression of vimentin and increased expression of the secretory component as the lesion progressed to malignancy.

CD44 is an adhesion molecule, which binds hyaluronic acid and participates in a number of cell-cell interactions, including lymphocyte homing. The CD44 antigen is expressed on approximately 90% of lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, and, in lower amounts on thymocytes, fibroblasts, and erythrocytes. Platelets lack CD44. In non-haematopoietic tissues, CD44 is widely distributed. The secretory component is isolated from human colostrum and is of help in more precise grading of endometrial carcinoma.
