Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives., publishedVersion

Context. Modern space telescopes are currently providing high-precision light curves for a large fraction of the sky, such that many new variable stars are being discovered. However, some stars have periodic variability with periods on the order of minutes and require high-cadence photometry to probe the physical mechanisms responsible. A cadence of less than a minute is often required to remove Nyquist ambiguities and confirm rapid variability, which forces observers to obtain high-cadence ground-based photometry.\ud Aims. We aim to provide a modern software package to reduce ground-based photometric time series data and deliver optimised (differential) light curves. To produce high-quality light curves, which maximise the amplitude signal-to-noise ratio of short-period variability in a Fourier spectrum, we require adaptive elliptical aperture photometry as this represents a significant advantage compared to aperture photometry using circular apertures of fixed radii.\ud Methods. The methodology of our code and its advantages are demonstrated using high-cadence ground-based photometry from the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) of a confirmed rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star. Furthermore, we employed our software package to search for rapid oscillations in three candidate roAp stars.\ud Results. We demonstrate that our pipeline represents a significant improvement in the quality of light curves, and we make it available to the community for use with different instruments and observatories. We search for and demonstrate the lack of high-frequency roAp pulsations to a limit of ∼ 1 mmag using B data in the three Ap stars HD 158596, HD 166542, and HD 181810.\ud Conclusions. We demonstrate the significant improvement in the extraction of short-period variability caused by high-frequency\ud pulsation modes, and discuss the implication of null detections in three Ap stars.

- Abstract
For low‐income or precariously employed households in Australia, the re‐allocation of risk over the past forty years has four crucial economic dimensions: the fraying of the social security net; changes in labour market dynamics; heightened uncertainty arising from income volatilities; and new hazards generated by the financialisation of daily life. Household financial capabilities are negatively influenced by the compounding impacts of each of these risks. Case examples from a BSL study illustrate each impact and their interactions. The dominant idea that individual capabilities are malleable (and thus can be optimised) whilst circumstances and norms are fixed is countered by an expanded view of Sen’s/Nussbaum’s capability approach (CA) that includes collective capabilities. Collective capabilities can change norms, and so, the concept provides a needed link between the political and macroeconomic movement of risk re‐allocation and individual or household financial capabilities. The Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union is used as an example to show how collective action can challenge structural conditions, and expand or protect the capabilities of individuals.

- Abstract
This paper proposes a financial wellbeing framework that recognises the drivers, impacts and experience of economic insecurity and is based on the concept of economic dignity. The framework builds on BSL research into economic insecurity and financial stress. It was developed through a series of workshops with BSL staff, informed by the conceptual thinking undertaken as part of the ANZ Tony Nicholson Fellowship. It will be used to guide the development of programs that directly address financial hardship among those experiencing disadvantage, and to support advocacy for government and institutional policies that create the conditions for the financial wellbeing of all Australians.

- Abstract
This study focuses on intra-individual variability in personality at work, and how it relates to job performance. 288 professionals completed contextualised adjective-based personality assessments in work and non-work contexts, and a non-contextualised personality measure. Ratings of their personality were also obtained from colleagues, family members and friends. Supervisors provided performance ratings for 130 participants. Results indicate that personality is context- and source-dependent, and varies systematically within contexts intra-individually regardless of source. Whilst this variability was predictive of some performance criteria when based on other-ratings, overall predictive effects were small in number and size. This study adds to the relatively small body of research on personality variability and performance and contributes to the conceptualisation of personality as a dynamic construct.

- Abstract
Our analysis of administrative social security data aimed to gain a clearer understanding of income volatility in Australia. The focus is on unemployed and underemployed Australians who received Newstart Allowance (NSA1)—a group of individuals highly exposed to the risks of financial insecurity. Our findings highlight some significant misunderstandings about the scale, scope and conditionality of Newstart Allowance receipt. While longer-term reliance on NSA is an important policy issue, short-term reliance is underestimated. An increasing share of recipients—especially women—are facing irregular payments due to suspensions. Our analysis raises questions about the extent to which the Australian social security system is fulfilling its mission to improve the lifetime wellbeing of individuals and families. The study drew on DOMINO (Data Over Multiple Individual Occurrences), a Department of Social Services database that records all interactions with Centrelink since 2001. This daily, event-based data provides an important opportunity to track individual patterns of NSA receipt over a 16-year period (2001–2016). This baseline study is part of a larger research program investigating the relationship between income volatility and social security payments. The program involves researchers from the Australian National University, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence and RMIT University.

We present the discovery of three new $$ Cep pulsators, three new pulsators with frequency groupings, and frequency patterns in a B3Ib star, all of which show pulsations with frequencies as high as about 17 d$^{-1}$, with K2 space mission photometry. Based on a Fourier analysis and iterative pre-whitening we present a classification and evaluate the potential for asteroseismic modelling. We include the lists of pulsation frequencies for three new $$ Cep pulsators, CD-28 12286, CD-27 10876, LS 3978, and additional pulsation mode frequencies for the known $$ Cep pulsator HD 164741. In addition we characterise the regular frequency spacing found in the new pulsator HD 169173, and discuss its origin. We place the newly discovered variables in a colour-magnitude diagram using parallaxes from Gaia-DR2, showcasing their approximate location in the massive star domain. The identified frequency lists of these multiperiodic pulsators are a good starting point for future forward seismic modelling, after identification of at least one pulsation frequency from high-resolution time series spectroscopy and/or multi-colour photometry., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 18 pages, 12 figures, 11 tables

226. An evidence-based overview of naturopathic practice in Australia

- Abstract
© NHAA 2019. Naturopaths are consulted by 6.2% of the Australian adult population, which is comparable to the rates of consultations with acupuncturists (7.9%) and osteopaths (5.4%)1. The Review of the Australian Government Rebate on Natural Therapies for Private Health Insurance2 (‘the Natural Therapies Review’) found there is evidence to suggest whole-system naturopathic practice is effective in improving patient health for a range of chronic health conditions. However, the Natural Therapies Review noted the unregulated nature of the workforce made it difficult to apply in the Australian context, particularly as most of the identified research was conducted in North America. Yet, Australian naturopathic education is comparable in both length and breadth to North American courses. The Australian naturopathic profession has been calling for registration for many years3 and every government report in the last 20 years examining the need for registration of naturopathy has recommended this should occur4. Despite the continued exclusion of naturopaths from the prevailing Australian regulatory mode, the profession has grown in size, strength and professional status at a national and international level. For example, the regulatory model developed by the naturopathic profession in lieu of government registration5 is held up as a best-practice model for self-regulation that could be adopted by other unregistered health professions. Alongside this, Australian naturopathic education is recognised by the international peak body — the World Naturopathic Federation (WNF) — as aligning with the highest tier of professional qualification internationally6 and Australian naturopathic researchers attract more government research funding than other registered complementary medicine professions. Even so, since the Natural Therapies Review in 2013 the evidence for whole-system naturopathic practice has continued to increase: Whereas the Natural Therapies Review found only one systematic review for naturopathy containing 6 RCTs with 692 patients, a more recent review has identified 31 RCTs comprising 9,798 patients, which provide evidence for an increased number of chronic conditions improved by naturopathic care7.

We present the first asteroseismic results for $$ Scuti and $$ Doradus stars observed in Sectors 1 and 2 of the TESS mission. We utilise the 2-min cadence TESS data for a sample of 117 stars to classify their behaviour regarding variability and place them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram using Gaia DR2 data. Included within our sample are the eponymous members of two pulsator classes, $$ Doradus and SX Phoenicis. Our sample of pulsating intermediate-mass stars observed by TESS also allows us to confront theoretical models of pulsation driving in the classical instability strip for the first time and show that mixing processes in the outer envelope play an important role. We derive an empirical estimate of 74% for the relative amplitude suppression factor as a result of the redder TESS passband compared to the Kepler mission using a pulsating eclipsing binary system. Furthermore, our sample contains many high-frequency pulsators, allowing us to probe the frequency variability of hot young $$ Scuti stars, which were lacking in the Kepler mission data set, and identify promising targets for future asteroseismic modelling. The TESS data also allow us to refine the stellar parameters of SX Phoenicis, which is believed to be a blue straggler., 33 pages (incl. appendix), accepted for publications in MNRAS

Early-type stars are predicted to excite an entire spectrum of internal gravity waves (IGWs) at the interface of their convective cores and radiative envelopes. Numerical simulations of IGWs predict stochastic low-frequency variability in photometric observations, yet the detection of IGWs in early-type stars has been limited by a dearth of high-quality photometric time series. We present observational evidence of stochastic low-frequency variability in the CoRoT photometry of a sample of O, B, A and F stars. The presence of this stochastic low-frequency variability in stars across the upper main-sequence cannot be universally explained as granulation or stellar winds, but its morphology is found to be consistent with predictions from IGW simulations., {"references":["Aerts, C., Bowman, D. - Abstract
The European Student Earth Orbiter (ESEO) is a micro-satellite mission to Low Earth Orbit and is being developed, integrated, and tested by European university students as an ESA Education Office project. AMSAT-UK and Surrey Space Centre are contributing to the mission with a transceiver and transponder similar to that of FUNcube-1 with the addition of utilising an Atmel AT32 processor for packet software-redundancy, baseband processing, forward error correction, and packet forming; acting as a step towards software defined radio using automotive microprocessors [1]. As on the FUNcube-1 satellite, the telemetry formats and encoding schemes presented utilize a large ground network of receivers on the VHF downlink and conforms to 1200 bps and a new 4800 bps redundant downlink for the rest of the spacecraft. The uplink is on L-band using bespoke partial-CCSDS frames. This paper describes the lean satellite design approach introduced by Cho et al. [2] for hardware and software development and testing of the proto-flight model (PFM) payload computer. Furthermore, it assesses the compliance of the project to customer and ESA specifications and discusses the applicability of these standards. Finally, lessons learned are elaborated to provide guidance for future small satellite projects. Through multiple student projects, it was possible to successfully develop a proto-flight model using the lean satellite design approach which entailed an improvement of customer specification compliance from 81% to 86% comparing to the engineering model. In software, utilising the Google Test Suite for verification of the SDR functions and FreeRTOS tools allowed students to optimize processor load margins to 30% when operating parallelized ADC and DAC, and CAN-open telemetry chains and exploring stable memory operations. A further finding was that in Summer 2017, there was an overall compliance of 82% to the CubeSat standard and 57% to the analysed set of ECSS specifications could be achieved. The poorer compliance in ECSS is due to the incomplete environmental testing at that time. The unfunded and student-based nature of the project places significant challenges when compared to conventional missions – but this was outweighed by the ESEO flight opportunity. Following this, we recommended to further the development of a new ISO standard for lean satellite design as initiated by Cho et al. [3] which eases the development process and reliability of small space projects that struggle to fully comply to ECSS or CubeSat specifications. ESA have since defined a subset of ECSS Specifications for educational and CubeSat missions.

- Abstract
The new photometric data on pulsating Ap star HD 27463 obtained recently with the Transiting Lroplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) are analysed to search for variability. Our analysis shows that HD 27463 exhibits two types of photometric variability. The low -frequency variability with the period P = 2.834 274 +/- 0.000 008 d can be explained in terms of axial stellar rotation assuming the oblique magnetic rotator model and presence of surface abundance/brightness spots, while the detected high -frequency variations are characteristics of fi Scud pulsations. From the analysis of Balmer line profiles visible in Iwo FEROS spectra of HI) 27463 we have derived its effective temperature and surface gravity, finding values that are close to those published for this star in the TESS Input Catalogue (TIC). Knowing the rotation period and the v sin i value estimated from the fitting of Balmer line profiles we found that the rotational axis is inclined to the line of sight with an angle of i = 33 +/- 8 deg. Our best -fitting model of the observed pulsation modes results in an overshoot parameter value = 0.014 and values of global stellar parameters that are in good agreement with the data reported in the TIC and with the data derived from fitting Balmer line profiles. This model indicates an age of 5.0 +/- 0.4 x 10(8) yr, which corresponds to a core hydrogen fraction of 0.33.

- Abstract
We present the first results from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) on the rotational and pulsational variability of magnetic chemically peculiar A-type stars. We analyse TESS 2-min cadence data from sectors 1 and 2 on a sample of 83 stars. Five new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars are announced. One of these pulsates with periods around 4.7 min, making it the shortest period roAp star known to date. Four out of the five new roAp stars are multiperiodic. Three of these and the singly periodic one show the presence of rotational mode splitting. Individual frequencies are provided in all cases. In addition, seven previously known roAp stars are analysed. Additional modes of oscillation are found in some stars, while in others we are able to distinguish the true pulsations from possible aliases present in the ground-based data. We find that the pulsation amplitude in the TESS filter is typically a factor of 6 smaller than that in the B filter, which is usually used for ground-based observations. For four roAp stars we set constraints on the inclination angle and magnetic obliquity, through the application of the oblique pulsator model. We also confirm the absence of roAp-type pulsations down to amplitude limits of 6 and 13 mu mag, respectively, in two of the best characterized non-oscillating Ap (noAp) stars. We announce 27 new rotational variables along with their rotation periods, and provide different rotation periods for seven other stars. Finally, we discuss how these results challenge state-of-the-art pulsation models for roAp stars.

- Abstract
In this paper we introduce the MOBSTER collaboration and lay out its scientific goals. We present first results based on the analysis of 19 previously known magnetic O, B, and A stars observed in 2-min cadence in sectors 1 and 2 of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. We derive precise rotational periods from the newly obtained light curves and compare them to previously published values. We also discuss the overall photometric phenomenology of the known magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars and propose an observational strategy to augment this population by taking advantage of the high-quality observations produced by TESS.

- Abstract
Recently, high-precision optical 2-min cadence light curves obtained with TESS for targets located in the mission's defined first four sectors have been released. The majority of these high-cadence and high-precision measurements currently span , thereby allowing periodic variability occurring on time-scales to potentially be detected. Magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) A-type stars are well known to exhibit rotationally modulated photometric variability that is produced by inhomogeneous chemical abundance distributions in their atmospheres. While mCP stars typically exhibit rotation periods that are significantly longer than those of non-mCP stars, both populations exhibit typical periods ; therefore, the early TESS releases are suitable for searching for rotational modulation of the light curves of both mCP and non-mCP stars. We present the results of our search for A-type stars that exhibit variability in their TESS light curves that is consistent with rotational modulation based on the first two data releases obtained from sectors 1 to 4. Our search yielded 134 high-probability candidate rotational variables - 60 of which have not been previously reported. Approximately half of these stars are identified in the literature as Ap (mCP) stars. Comparisons between the subsample of high-probability candidate rotationally variable Ap stars and the subsample of stars that are not identified as Ap reveal that the latter subsample exhibits statistically (i) shorter rotation periods and (ii) significantly lower photometric amplitudes.

- Abstract
Asteroseismology of massive stars has recently begun a revolution thanks to high-precision time series photometry from space telescopes. This has allowed accurate and robust constraints on interior physical processes, such as mixing and rotation in the near-core region of stars, to be determined across different masses and ages. In this review, I discuss recent advances in our knowledge of massive star interiors made by means of gravity-mode asteroseismology, and highlight some new observational discoveries of variability in some of the most massive stars in our universe., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, invited contribution at the conference "Stars and their variability observed from space - Celebrating the 5th anniversary of BRITE-Constellation", Vienna, Austria, August 19 - 23, 2019. - Abstract
In this contribution, we present the MOBSTER Collaboration, a large community effort to leverage high-precision photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) in order to characterize the variability of magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars. These data can be used to probe the varying column density of magnetospheric plasma along the line of sight for OB stars, thus improving our understanding of the interaction between surface magnetic fields and massive star winds. They can also be used to map out the brightness inhomogeneities present on the surfaces of Ap/Bp stars, informing present models of atomic diffusion in their atmospheres. Finally, we review our current and ongoing studies, which lead to new insights on this topic., Comment: 4 pages, Conference proceedings: "Stars and their variability observed from space", Vienna, Austria, 2019
