Abstract

Here, we propose SnO2 as a reactive ion etching (RIE) mask in fluorine-based etching processes. Tin forms nonvolatile compounds with fluorine at the process temperatures enabling tin to function as an etch mask. We investigate atomic layer deposition (ALD) of SnO2 on silicon thermal oxide, silicon native oxide, H-terminated Si(001), and polystyrene surfaces using tetrakis(dimethylamino) tin(IV) and H2O at 170 °C to understand film nucleation patterns. Pinhole free films of approximately 1 nm thick SnO2 form on silicon thermal oxide and silicon native oxide and resist etching with SF6 under conditions that etch 0.3 μm into silicon. Nucleation delays were observed on H-terminated Si(001) producing continuous films with pinhole defects. Etch proof-of-concept is studied by UV crosslinking polystyrene, dissolving away non-crosslinked polystyrene to expose native oxide, and depositing 20–100 ALD cycles of SnO2. Well-defined grid patterns are transferred 1.2 μm into Si(001) with SF6 RIE when 50 ALD cycles of SnO2 are grown, which is approximately 4 nm thick. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

203. Monthly Arctic Sea‐Ice Prediction With a Linear Inverse Model.

Abstract

We evaluate Linear Inverse Models (LIMs) trained on last millennium model data to predict Arctic sea‐ice concentration, thickness, and other atmospheric and oceanic variables on monthly timescales. We find that more than 500 years of training data and 100 years of validation data are needed to reliably estimate LIM forecast skill. The best LIM has skill up to 8 months lead time and outperforms an autoregressive model of order one (AR1) forecast at all locations, with particularly large outperformance near the ice edge. However, for out‐of‐sample validation tests using data from various different model simulations and reanalysis products, they underperform an AR1 model due to differences in the location of the sea‐ice edge from the training data. We present a metric for predicting LIM forecast skill, based on the spatial correlation of the variance in the training and validation data sets. Plain Language Summary: Rapid changes in sea‐ice concentration in recent decades have produced new navigational challenges and hazards in the region, elevating the importance of seasonal sea‐ice forecasts. Arctic sea ice has been shown to contain inherent predictability on seasonal timescales, yet current predictions generally show poor skill. Here, we employ a statistical technique referred to as Linear Inverse Modeling, which uses linearized dynamical modes estimated from a training data set to predict sea‐ice conditions on monthly timescales. We find a Linear Inverse Model is able to outperform a baseline statistical model throughout the Arctic when initialized on the data derived from the same model. 204. Low temperature, area-selective atomic layer deposition of NiO and Ni

Abstract

Nickel and nickel oxide are utilized within various device heterostructures for chemical sensing, solar cells, batteries, etc. Recently, the rising interest in realizing low-cost, flexible electronics to enable ubiquitous sensors and solar panels, next-generation displays, and improved human-machine interfaces has driven interest in the development of low-temperature fabrication processes for the integration of inorganic devices with polymeric substrates. Here, we report the low-temperature area-selective atomic layer deposition of Ni by reduction of preformed NiO. Area-selective deposition of NiO is performed at 100 °C using bis( N, N'-di- tert-butylacetamidinato) nickel(II) and water on SiO2 and polystyrene. NiO grows two-dimensionally and without nucleation delay on oxide substrates but not on SiNx or polystyrene, which require surface treatments to promote NiO nucleation. Additionally, prepatterned sp2 carbon-rich resists inhibit the nucleation of NiO, and in this way, carbon-free NiO may be patterned. Subsequent thermal reduction of NiO to Ni was investigated using H2 (50–80 m Torr) and thermally generated H-atoms (3 × 10−5 Torr chamber pressure). Due to the relatively high free surface energy of Ni metal, Ni films undergo dewetting at elevated temperatures when solid-state transport is enabled. Reduction of NiO to Ni is demonstrated at 100 °C and below using atomic hydrogen. In situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to determine oxidation state and ex situ x-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy are used to probe the film thickness and surface morphology, respectively.

Abstract

Previous research has shown that polygenic risk scores (PRSs) can be used to stratify women according to their risk of developing primary invasive breast cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the association between a recently validated PRS of 313 germline variants (PRS313) and contralateral breast cancer (CBC) risk. We included 56,068 women of European ancestry diagnosed with first invasive breast cancer from 1990 onward with follow-up from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. Metachronous CBC risk (N = 1,027) according to the distribution of PRS313 was quantified using Cox regression analyses. We assessed PRS313 interaction with age at first diagnosis, family history, morphology, ER status, PR status, and HER2 status, and (neo)adjuvant therapy. In studies of Asian women, with limited follow-up, CBC risk associated with PRS313 was assessed using logistic regression for 340 women with CBC compared with 12,133 women with unilateral breast cancer. Higher PRS313 was associated with increased CBC risk: hazard ratio per standard deviation (SD) = 1.25 (95%CI = 1.18–1.33) for Europeans, and an OR per SD = 1.15 (95%CI = 1.02–1.29) for Asians. The absolute lifetime risks of CBC, accounting for death as competing risk, were 12.4% for European women at the 10th percentile and 20.5% at the 90th percentile of PRS313. We found no evidence of confounding by or interaction with individual characteristics, characteristics of the primary tumor, or treatment. The C-index for the PRS313 alone was 0.563 (95%CI = 0.547–0.586). Abstract

Dietary restriction promotes longevity via autophagy activation. However, changes to lysosomes underlying this effect remain unclear. Using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, we show that induction of autophagic tubular lysosomes, which occurs upon dietary restriction or mTOR inhibition, is a critical event linking reduced food intake to lifespan extension. We find that starvation induces tubular lysosomes not only in affected individuals but also in well-fed descendants, and the presence of gut tubular lysosomes in well-fed progeny is predictive of enhanced lifespan. Furthermore, we demonstrate that expression of Drosophila SVIP, a tubular-lysosome activator in flies, artificially induces tubular lysosomes in well-fed worms and improves C. elegans health in old age. Abstract

Children are constructed as learners of mathematics by virtue of their participation within the classroom. Through its modes of measurement, discipline, sanctions and rewards, the discourse of mathematics classrooms make children visible as mathematically (dis)abled subjects. From this discourse “ability” emerges. Teachers transmit their own values and definitions of ability to their class. Children come to view themselves as learners of mathematics through the messages communicated by their teacher and through comparison with their peers. This study employs a mixed methods design approach (Teddlie & Tashakkori, 2009) across eight primary school classrooms at second and fifth class level in DEIS and non-DEIS schools. A total of twenty-four mathematics lessons were observed, while eighteen mathematics lessons were video recorded. Focus group interviews with children, child questionnaires and drawings were also employed in the data collection. Eight teachers and eight school principals were interviewed. This paper will examine the discourse around ability by drawing on the perspectives of teachers and children.

Abstract

Patterned, crystalline BaTiO3 (BTO) films were formed directly on STO(001) surfaces using atomic layer deposition and restricting Ba and Ti precursor adsorption to STO(001) by passivating regions of the substrate with a polystyrene blocking layer. Patterns were prepared by spin-coating polystyrene onto STO(001), UV-crosslinking the polystyrene, and rinsing away uncrosslinked polystyrene with toluene. Amorphous 9–12 nm thick BTO films were deposited at 225 °C on polystyrene-patterned STO(001) surfaces. These films were crystallized upon annealing at elevated temperatures. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy were used after growth of BTO and removal of polystyrene resist and reveal BTO features with dimensions similar to the shadow mask. Abstract

Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of infections, bone fractures, and skin cancers. Objective: We developed preventive health videos using a patient-centered approach and tested their impact on preventive health uptake. Methods: Five animated videos explaining preventive health recommendations in IBD were iteratively developed with patient-centered focus groups and interviews. A randomized controlled trial was then conducted in a web-based IBD cohort to test the impact of video- versus text-based educational interventions. The primary outcome was receipt of the influenza vaccine. Secondary outcomes included intention to receive other preventive health services. Results: Five animated videos were developed with patient input. A total of 1056 patients with IBD were then randomized to receive the video (n=511) or text-only (n=545) interventions; 55% (281/511) of the video group and 57% (311/545) of the text-only group had received their influenza vaccine in the prior year. Immediately after the intervention, 73% (502/683) of patients reported their intention to receive the vaccine, with no difference by the type of intervention (75%, 231/307, for the video group and 72%, 271/376, for the text-only group). The proportion of patients who actually received the influenza vaccine after the intervention also did not differ by messaging type (P =.07). The strongest predictor of both intention to receive and actual receipt of the influenza vaccine was prior influenza vaccination. Older age was also associated with a higher likelihood of the intention to receive (age 36-75 years relative to 18-35 years; P =.006) and actual receipt (age >75 years relative to 18-35 years; P =.05) of the influenza vaccine. Conclusions: The proportion of patients receiving the influenza vaccine was high in both groups, but there was no difference in receipt of or in the intention to receive preventive health recommendations by type of messaging. Notably, a portion of patients in both groups had intended to be vaccinated but did not ultimately receive the vaccine. Further evaluation of patient-education strategies is warranted to improve preventive health uptake among patients with IBD. 231. A systematic review of the quality of life assessment tools for cats in the published literature

Abstract

Quality of life (QoL) is an important parameter to assess in cats, as it can be pivotal to important decision-making. Research reports that owners of cats with heart disease would trade longevity for QoL, and treatment associated improvement in QoL is very important for cats with chronic kidney disease. This systematic review aimed to explore the published literature to identify the number and range of QoL assessment tools available to researchers and veterinary professionals, by discovering tools which have already been used in published studies. Medline and CAB Abstracts were searched in March 2018, using terms relevant to cats and QoL or well-being. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and information on uniqueness, validation and a short description of each tool extracted. A total of 1138 manuscripts were identified, of which 96 met all criteria. Forty of 96 manuscripts contained an assessment of QoL, using one of 32 unique tools identified. Sixteen of the tools identified were structured, making detailed patient assessments. Only eight of the structured tools were validated, and of these, three could be applied to healthy cats; the remainder being specific to a disease or being hospitalised. Some validated tools appeared in more than one manuscript. Overall, 12 manuscripts used a validated tool. In the 16 unstructured tools, five tools assessed QoL by assigning a single word (e.g. ‘poor’). Eight tools assessed QoL on a single Likert scale (e.g. a number between 1 and 5). This work identifies the tools that are currently available for the assessment of QoL by researchers and veterinary professionals. Additionally, it demonstrates that many are not validated or lack detailed animal assessment, highlighting that further work in this important area is needed.
