Compared with the current Shannon's Classical Information Theory (CIT) paradigm, semantic communication (SemCom) has recently attracted more attention, since it aims to transmit the meaning of information rather than bit-by-bit transmission, thus enhancing data transmission efficiency and supporting future human-centric, data-, and resource-intensive intelligent services in 6G systems. Nevertheless, channel noises are common and even serious in 6G-empowered scenarios, limiting the communication performance of SemCom, especially when Signal-to-Noise (SNR) levels during training and deployment stages are different, but training multi-networks to cover the scenario with a broad range of SNRs is computationally inefficient. Hence, we develop a novel De-Noising SemCom (DNSC) framework, where the designed de-noiser module can eliminate noise interference from semantic vectors. Upon the designed DNSC architecture, we further combine adversarial learning, variational autoencoder, and diffusion model to propose the Latent Diffusion DNSC (Latent-Diff DNSC) scheme to realize intelligent online de-noising. During the offline training phase, noises are added to latent semantic vectors in a forward Markov diffusion manner and then are eliminated in a reverse diffusion manner through the posterior distribution approximated by the U-shaped Network (U-Net), where the semantic de-noiser is optimized by maximizing evidence lower bound (ELBO). Such design can model real noisy channel environments with various SNRs and enable to adaptively remove noises from noisy semantic vectors during the online transmission phase. Legged locomotion is a highly promising but under-researched subfield within the field of soft robotics. The compliant limbs of soft-limbed robots offer numerous benefits, including the ability to regulate impacts, tolerate falls, and navigate through tight spaces. These robots have the potential to be used for various applications, such as search and rescue, inspection, surveillance, and more. The state-of-the-art still faces many challenges, including limited degrees of freedom, a lack of diversity in gait trajectories, insufficient limb dexterity, and limited payload capabilities. To address these challenges, we develop a modular soft-limbed robot that can mimic the locomotion of pinnipeds. By using a modular design approach, we aim to create a robot that has improved degrees of freedom, gait trajectory diversity, limb dexterity, and payload capabilities. We derive a complete floating-base kinematic model of the proposed robot and use it to generate and experimentally validate a variety of locomotion gaits. Results show that the proposed robot is capable of replicating these gaits effectively. We investigated the effects of the momentum spread of photon around incoming electrons during nonlinear Compton scattering of an elliptically polarized laser off an ultrarelativistic electron beam. It has been assumed to be a good approximation to neglect the angular spread in the strong-field QED codes considering its smallness in relativistic regime. Here, we scrutinize the validity of this approximation in the nonlinear Compton scattering. For our purpose, we improved the fully electron spin- and photon polarization- resolved Monte Carlo simulation method by employing the angle-resolved probability for high-energy photon emission in ultrastrong laser fields. The quantum operator method introduced by Baier and Katkov is employed for calculation of the probability within the quasiclassical approach and the local constant field approximation. Our simulation shows that the angular spread at emission has notable effects on angular distribution and polarization of out-going particles. The width of angular distributions for electrons and emitted photons are increased by $55\%$ and $22\%$, respectively. Meanwhile, the electrons polarization is reduced by $11\%$ due to the correction of radiation reaction force, while the average polarization of photons is insensitive to the angular spread at emissions.

Blackberry harvesting is a labor-intensive and costly process, consuming up to 50\% of the total annual crop hours. This paper presents a solution for robotic harvesting through the design, manufacturing, integration, and control of a pneumatically actuated, kinematically redundant soft arm with a tendon-driven soft robotic gripper. The hardware design is optimized for durability and modularity for practical use. The harvesting process is divided into four stages: initial placement, fine positioning, grasp, and move back to home position. For initial placement, we propose a real-time, continuous gain-scheduled redundancy resolution algorithm for simultaneous position and orientation control with joint-limit avoidance. The algorithm relies solely on visual feedback from an eye-to-hand camera and achieved a position and orientation tracking error of $0.64\pm{0.27}$ mm and $1.08\pm{1.5}^{\circ}$, respectively, in benchtop settings. Following accurate initial placement of the robotic arm, fine positioning is achieved using a combination of eye-in-hand and eye-to-hand visual feedback, reaching an accuracy of $0.75\pm{0.36}$ mm. Soft robotics holds tremendous potential for various applications, especially in unstructured environments such as search and rescue operations. However, the lack of autonomy and teleoperability, limited capabilities, absence of gait diversity and real-time control, and onboard sensors to sense the surroundings are some of the common issues with soft-limbed robots. To overcome these limitations, we propose a spatially symmetric, topologically-stable, soft-limbed tetrahedral robot that can perform multiple locomotion gaits. We introduce a kinematic model, derive locomotion trajectories for different gaits, and design a teleoperation mechanism to enable real-time human-robot collaboration. We use the kinematic model to map teleoperation inputs and ensure smooth transitions between gaits. Additionally, we leverage the passive compliance and natural stability of the robot for toppling and obstacle navigation. Through experimental tests, we demonstrate the robot's ability to tackle various locomotion challenges, adapt to different situations, and navigate obstructed environments via teleoperation.

General-purpose embedding is highly desirable for few-shot even zero-shot learning in many application scenarios, including audio tasks. In order to understand representations better, we conducted a thorough error analysis and visualization of HEAR 2021 submission results. Inspired by the analysis, this work experiments with different front-end audio preprocessing methods, including Constant-Q Transform (CQT) and Short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and proposes a Batch Embedding Covariance Regularization (BECR) term to uncover a more holistic simulation of the frequency information received by the human auditory system. We tested the models on the suite of HEAR 2021 tasks, which encompass a broad category of tasks. Preliminary results show (1) the proposed BECR can incur a more dispersed embedding on the test set, (2) BECR improves the PaSST model without extra computation complexity, and (3) STFT preprocessing outperforms CQT in all tasks we tested. Soft robotic snakes made of compliant materials can continuously deform their bodies and, therefore, mimic the biological snakes' flexible and agile locomotion gaits better than their rigid-bodied counterparts. Without wheel support, to date, soft robotic snakes are limited to emulating planar locomotion gaits, which are derived via kinematic modeling and tested on robotic prototypes. Given that the snake locomotion results from the reaction forces due to the distributed contact between their skin and the ground, it is essential to investigate the locomotion gaits through efficient dynamic models capable of accommodating distributed contact forces. We present a complete spatial dynamic model that utilizes a floating-base kinematic model with distributed contact dynamics for a pneumatically powered soft robotic snake. We numerically evaluate the feasibility of the planar and spatial rolling gaits utilizing the proposed model and experimentally validate the corresponding locomotion gait trajectories on a soft robotic snake prototype. Soft robotic snakes (SRSs) have a unique combination of continuous and compliant properties that allow them to imitate the complex movements of biological snakes. Despite the previous attempts to develop SRSs, many have been limited to planar movements or use wheels to achieve locomotion, which restricts their ability to imitate the full range of biological snake movements. We propose a new design for the SRSs that is wheelless and powered by pneumatics, relying solely on spatial bending to achieve its movements. We derive a kinematic model of the proposed SRS and utilize it to achieve two snake locomotion trajectories, namely sidewinding and helical rolling. These movements are experimentally evaluated under different gait parameters on our SRS prototype. The results demonstrate that the SRS can successfully mimic the proposed spatial locomotion trajectories. This is a significant improvement over the previous designs, which were either limited to planar movements or relied on wheels for locomotion. Regional data center clusters have flourished in recent years to serve customers in a major city with low latency. The optimal coordination of data centers in a regional cluster has become a pressing issue because of its rising energy consumption. In this paper, a Lyapunov optimization-based online algorithm is developed for the combined computing workload and energy coordination of data centers in a regional cluster. The proposed online algorithm is prediction-free and easy to implement. We prove that the workload queues and battery energy level will be within their physical limits, though their related time-coupling constraints are not considered explicitly in the proposed algorithm. The previous online algorithms do not have such a guarantee. A theoretical upper bound on the optimality gap between the online and offline results is derived to provide a performance guarantee for the proposed algorithm. To enable distributed implementation, an accelerated ADMM algorithm is developed with iteration truncation and follow-up well-designed adjustments, whereby a nearly optimal solution is attained with much enhanced computational efficiency. The detection of human sleep stages is widely used in the diagnosis and intervention of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Some patients with deep brain stimulator implanted could have their neural activities recorded from the deep brain. Sleep stage classification based on deep brain recording has great potential to provide more precise treatment for patients. The accuracy and generalizability of existing sleep stage classifiers based on local field potentials are still limited. We proposed an applicable cross-modal transfer learning method for sleep stage classification with implanted devices. This end-to-end deep learning model contained cross-modal self-supervised feature representation, self-attention, and classification framework. We tested the model with deep brain recording data from 12 patients with Parkinson's disease. The best total accuracy reached 83.2% for sleep stage classification. Results showed speech self-supervised features catch the conversion pattern of sleep stages effectively. We provide a new method on transfer learning from acoustic signals to local field potentials. This method supports an effective solution for the insufficient scale of clinical data. Growing global demand for food, coupled with continuing labor shortages, motivates the need for automated agricultural harvesting. While some specialty crops (e.g., apples, peaches, blueberries) can be harvested via existing harvesting modalities, fruits such as blackberries and raspberries require delicate handling to mitigate fruit damage that could significantly impact marketability. This motivates the development of soft robotic solutions that enable efficient, delicate harvesting. This paper presents the design, fabrication, and feasibility testing of a tendon-driven soft gripping system focused on blackberries, which are a fragile fruit susceptible to post-harvest damage. The gripper is both low-cost and small form factor, allowing for the integration of a micro-servo for tendon retraction, a near-infrared (NIR) based blackberry ripeness sensor utilizing the reflectance modality for identifying fully ripe blackberries, and an endoscopic camera for visual servoing with a UR-5. The gripper was used to harvest 139 berries with manual positioning in two separate field tests. Field testing found an average retention force of 2.06 N and 6.08 N for ripe and unripe blackberries, respectively. Sensor tests identified an average reflectance of 16.78 and 21.70 for ripe and unripe blackberries, respectively, indicating a clear distinction between the two ripeness levels. The main goal of a sequential two-stage electricity market -- e.g., day-ahead and real-time markets -- is to operate efficiently. However, the price difference across stages due to inadequate competition and unforeseen circumstances leads to undesirable price manipulation. To mitigate this, some Independent System Operators (ISOs) proposed system-level market power mitigation (MPM) policies in addition to existing local policies. These policies aim to substitute noncompetitive bids with a default bid based on estimated generator costs. However, these policies may lead to unintended consequences when implemented without accounting for the conflicting interest of participants. In this paper, we model the competition between generators (bidding supply functions) and loads (bidding quantity) in a two-stage market with a stage-wise MPM policy. An equilibrium analysis shows that a real-time MPM policy leads to equilibrium loss, meaning no stable market outcome (Nash equilibrium) exists. A day-ahead MPM policy, besides, leads to a Stackelberg-Nash game with loads acting as leaders and generators as followers. In this setting, loads become winners, i.e., their aggregate payment is always less than competitive payments. Moreover, comparison with standard market equilibrium highlights that markets are better off without such policies. Finally, numerical studies highlight the impact of heterogeneity and load size on market equilibrium.

As an essential measure to combat global warming, electric vehicles (EVs) have witnessed rapid growth. Flexible EVs can enhance power systems' ability to handle renewable generation uncertainties. How EV flexibility can be utilized in power grid operation has captured great attention. However, the direct control of individual EVs is challenging due to their small capacity and large number. Hence, it is the aggregator that interacts with the grid on behalf of the EVs by characterizing their aggregate flexibility. In this paper, we focus on the aggregate EV power flexibility characterization problem. First, an offline model is built to obtain the lower and upper bounds of the aggregate EV power flexibility region. It ensures that any trajectory within the region is feasible. Then, considering that parameters such as real-time electricity prices and EV arrival/departure times are not known in advance, an online algorithm is developed based on Lyapunov optimization techniques. We provide a theoretical bound for the maximum charging delay under the proposed online algorithm. Furthermore, real-time feedback is designed and integrated into the proposed online algorithm to better unlock EV power flexibility. Effective representation of molecules is a crucial factor affecting the performance of artificial intelligence models. This study introduces a flexible, fragment-based, multiscale molecular representation framework called t-SMILES (tree-based SMILES) with three code algorithms: TSSA, TSDY and TSID. It describes molecules using SMILES-type strings obtained by performing a breadth-first search on a full binary tree formed from a fragmented molecular graph. Systematic evaluations using JTVAE, BRICS, MMPA, and Scaffold show the feasibility of constructing a multi-code molecular description system, where various descriptions complement each other, enhancing the overall performance. In addition, it can avoid overfitting and achieve higher novelty scores while maintaining reasonable similarity on labeled low-resource datasets, regardless of whether the model is original, data-augmented, or pre-trained then fine-tuned. Furthermore, it significantly outperforms classical SMILES, DeepSMILES, SELFIES and baseline models in goal-directed tasks. And it surpasses state-of-the-art fragment, graph and SMILES based approaches on ChEMBL, Zinc, and QM9.

Wind power, as a green energy resource, is growing rapidly worldwide, along with energy storage systems (ESSs) to mitigate its volatility. Sizing of wind power generation and ESSs has become an important problem to be addressed. Wake effect in a wind farm can cause wind speed deficits and a drop in downstream wind turbine power generation, which however was rarely considered in the sizing problem in power systems. In this paper, a bi-objective distributionally robust optimization (DRO) model is proposed to determine the capacities of wind power generation and ESSs considering the wake effect. An ambiguity set based on Wasserstein metric is established to characterize the wind power and demand uncertainties. In particular, wind power uncertainty is affected by the wind power generation capacity which is determined in the first stage. Thus, the proposed model is a DRO problem with endogenous uncertainty (or decision-dependent uncertainty). To solve the proposed model, a stochastic programming approximation method based on minimum Lipschitz constants is developed to turn the DRO model into a linear program. Then, an iterative algorithm is built, embedded with methods for evaluating the minimum Lipschitz constants. The polarization dynamics of electrons including multiple nonlinear Compton scattering during the interaction of a circularly-polarized ultraintense laser pulse with a counterpropagating ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated. While electron polarization emerges mostly due to spin-flips at photon emissions, there is a non-radiative contribution to the polarization which stems from the one-loop QED radiative corrections to the self-energy, which admits of a simple physical model. We put forward a method to single out the non-radiative contribution to the polarization, employing the reflection regime of the interaction when the radiation reaction is significant. The polarization of electrons that penetrate in the forward direction through a colliding laser is shown to be dominated by the loop effect, while the reflected electrons are mostly polarized by spin-flips at photon emissions. We confirm this effect by quantum Monte Carlo simulations considering the helicity transfer from the laser field to the electrons, taking into account the opposite sign of the polarizations induced by the non-radiative loop effect and radiative spin-flip. Our Monte Carlo simulations show a polarization signal as high as $\gtrsim 10\%$ from the non-radiative effect, amenable for experimental detection with current technology.

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have achieved photorealistic novel views synthesis; however, the requirement of accurate camera poses limits its application. Despite analysis-by-synthesis extensions for jointly learning neural 3D representations and registering camera frames exist, they are susceptible to suboptimal solutions if poorly initialized. We propose L2G-NeRF, a Local-to-Global registration method for bundle-adjusting Neural Radiance Fields: first, a pixel-wise flexible alignment, followed by a frame-wise constrained parametric alignment. Pixel-wise local alignment is learned in an unsupervised way via a deep network which optimizes photometric reconstruction errors. Frame-wise global alignment is performed using differentiable parameter estimation solvers on the pixel-wise correspondences to find a global transformation. Experiments on synthetic and real-world data show that our method outperforms the current state-of-the-art in terms of high-fidelity reconstruction and resolving large camera pose misalignment. Place recognition is a critical and challenging task for mobile robots, aiming to retrieve an image captured at the same place as a query image from a database. Existing methods tend to fail while robots move autonomously under occlusion (e.g., car, bus, truck) and changing appearance (e.g., illumination changes, seasonal variation). Because they encode the image into only one code, entangling place features with appearance and occlusion features. To overcome this limitation, we propose PROCA, an unsupervised approach to decompose the image representation into three codes: a place code used as a descriptor to retrieve images, an appearance code that captures appearance properties, and an occlusion code that encodes occlusion content. Single atoms are interesting candidates for studying quantum optics and quantum information processing. Recently, trapping and manipulation of single atoms using tight optical dipole traps have generated considerable interest. Here we report an experimental investigation of the dynamics of atoms in a modified optical dipole trap with a backward propagating dipole trap beam, where a change in the two-atom collision rate by six times has been achieved. The theoretical model presented gives a prediction of high probabilities of few-atom loading rates under proper experimental conditions. The increasing use of renewable energy sources (RESs) and responsive loads has made power systems more uncertain. Meanwhile, thanks to the development of advanced metering and forecasting technologies, predictions by RESs and load owners are now attainable. Many recent studies have revealed that pooling the predictions from RESs and loads can help the operators predict more accurately and make better dispatch decisions. However, how the prediction purchase decisions are made during the dispatch processes needs further investigation. This paper fills the research gap by proposing a novel robust generation dispatch model considering the purchase and use of predictions from RESs and loads. The prediction purchase decisions are made in the first stage, which influence the accuracy of predictions from RESs and loads, and further the uncertainty set and the worst-case second-stage dispatch performance. This two-stage procedure is essentially a robust optimization problem with decision-dependent uncertainty (DDU). A mapping-based column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm is developed to overcome the potential failures of traditional solution methods in detecting feasibility, guaranteeing convergence, and reaching optimal strategies under DDU.
