201. Near-Barrier Fusion and Barrier Distribution of 58Ni + 54Fe

Abstract

Near- and sub-barrier fusion cross sections have been measured for the system 58Ni + 54Fe, and the fusion barrier distribution has been extracted. The measured cross sections cover the range from ~1 microbarn up to around 500 mb. Close analogies are found between the extracted barrier distribution and the available data on 58Ni + 60Ni, indicating the dominating influence of complex surface vibrations on the fusion of 58Ni + 54Fe. The present data on 58Ni + 54Fe are well reproduced by standard coupled-channels calculations in the measured energy range, including quadrupole and octupole phonons in both colliding nuclei.

Abstract

The fusion excitation function for 36S+48Ca with positive Q-value for the compound nucleus formation, has been measured from near the barrier down to very low energies, where “ fusion hindrance” may be expected. No evidence of hindrance shows up in the measured energy range. Coupled-channels calculations have been performed with a large diffuseness parameter of the Wood-Saxon potential, reproducing the data above and below the barrier.

Abstract

In recent years, a puzzling pattern has been observed in fusion cross sections well below the Coulomb barrier, characterized as a departure from the exponential-like behavior predicted by standard coupled-channels models, known as fusion hindrance. We report on recent fusion measurements performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, in particular the 48Ca+48Ca reaction down to the level of 0.6 µb. Unlike most recent results in this field, we do not observe the typical divergent behavior of the logarithmic derivative ; but rather a sort of saturation, albeit at a larger value than predicted with a standard nucleus-nucleus potentia

Abstract

The occurence of “ exotic” shapes in light N = Z -like nuclei is investigated for 24Mg+12C and 32S+24Mg. Various approaches of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant structures with low spin are presented. For both reactions, exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spectrometer in coincidence with EUROBALL IV installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility of Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively populated in binary reactions and their associated -decays studied. The analysis of the binary and ternary reaction channels is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The 12C(16O,$\gamma$)28Si radiative capture reaction has been studied at energies close to the Coulomb barrier at Triumf (Vancouver) using the Dragon spectrometer and its associated BGO array. It has been observed that the $\gamma$ decay flux proceeds mainly via states around 10–11 MeV and via the direct feeding of the 28Si 3 1-(6879 keV) and 4 2+(6888 keV) deformed states. A discussion is presented about this selective feeding as well as perspectives for the use of novel detection systems for the study of light heavy-ion radiative capture reactions

Abstract

A detailed study of known and new SD bands in Tb isotopes has been performed with the use of the EUROBALL IV gamma-ray array. The high-statistics data set has allowed for the extension of known SD bands at low and high spins by new gamma-ray transitions. These transitions, as it turns out, correspond to the rotational frequencies where the principal superdeformed gaps (Z=66,N=86) close giving rise to up- or down-bending mechanisms. This enables to attribute the underlying theoretical configurations with much higher confidence as compared to the previous identifications. Five new SD bands have been discovered, three of them assigned to the 152Tb and the two others to the 151Tb nuclei. Nuclear mean-field calculations have been used to interpret the structure of known SD bands as well as of the new ones in terms of nucleonic configurations.

Abstract

Fusion cross sections have been measured in the 40Ca + 58Ni and 40Ca + 64Ni systems at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. The 40Ca beam was delivered by the XTU Tandem accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and evaporation residues were measured at very forward angles with the LNL electrostatic beam deflector. Coupled-channels calculations were performed which highlight possible strong effects of neutron transfers on the fusion below the barrier in the 40Ca + 64Ni system. Microscopic time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations have also been performed for both systems. Preliminary results are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The cross section of the 12C+12C fusion reaction at low energies is of paramount importance for models of stellar nucleosynthesis in different astrophysical scenarios, such as Type Ia supernovae and X- ray superbursts, where this reaction is a primary route for the production of heavier elements. In a series of experiments performed at Argonne National Laboratory, using Gammasphere and an array of Silicon detectors, measurements of the fusion cross section of 12C+12C were successfully carried out with the γ and charged-particle coincidence technique in the center-of-mass energy range of 3-5 MeV. These were the first background-free fusion cross section measurements for 12C+12C at energies of astrophysical interest. Our results are consistent with previous measurements in the high-energy region; however, our lowest energy measurement indicates a fusion cross section slightly lower than those obtained with other techniques. Abstract

In order to better understand the influence of transfer in sub-barrier nuclear reactions, cross sections for the system 58,64Ni+124Sn have been measured down to 0.5-1 μb and compared to detailed coupled-channel calculations. In agreement with a phenomenological Q-value systematics, calculations show the importance of including the coupling to the transfer channel for these heavy systems. No clear evidence of fusion hindrance is observed, probably due to the fact that the cross sections measured in this experiment are not low enough for the appearance of that phenomenon. In the last period, two classes of experiments have been carried out with the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. In particular, the one- and two-neutron transfer processes at energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to deep below it and the population of exotic neutron rich nuclei in the A~130 and A~200 mass regions have been studied. Both kinds of experiments have been performed in inverse kinematics identifying in A, Z and velocity the light target-like recoils with PRISMA placed at very forward angles in order to have, at the same time, high efficiency and good energy and mass resolutions. The fusion reactions 58,64Ni+58,64Ni, 40,48Ca+40,48Ca and 40Ca+58,64Ni have been performed at sub-barrier energies to study the interplay between nuclear structure and reaction dynamics. In this contribution, these fusion reactions have been described in a consistent way. Barrier distributions have been extracted from accurate fusion excitation function data. Coupled-channels calculations have been performed with the CCFULL code, using the Akyüz-Winther nuclear potential, including projectile and target inelastic excitations of the 21+ and 31- states and schematically taking into account the positive Q value neutron pair-transfer channels. Abstract

The multinucleon transfer reaction 40Ar+208Pb has been measured at Elab = 260 MeV with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Mass and charge yields, differential and total cross sections, total kinetic energy loss distributions of different channels were simultaneously studied. Angular distributions were measured in a wide angular range by matching three different angular settings of the spectrometer. Absolute cross sections were obtained after the response function of the spectrometer was evaluated. These cross sections for different transfer channels allow the discussion of the role played by nucleon-nucleon correlations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The heavy-ion radiative capture reaction, 12C(12C,$\gamma$), has been investigated at energies both on- and off-resonance, with a particular focus on known resonances at Ec.m.=6.0, 6.8, 7.5, and 8.0 MeV. Gamma rays detected in a BGO scintillator array were recorded in coincidence with 24Mg residues at the focal plane of the DRAGON recoil separator at TRIUMF. In this manner, the relative strength of all decay pathways through excited states up to the particle threshold could be examined for the first time. Isovector M1 transitions are found to be a important component of the radiative capture from the Ec.m.=6.0 and 6.8 MeV resonances. Comparison with Monte Carlo simulations suggests that these resonances may have either J=0 or 2, with a preference for J=2. The higher energy resonances at Ec.m.=7.5 and 8.0 MeV have a rather different decay pattern. The former is a clear candidate for a J=4 resonance, whereas the latter has a dominant J=4 character superposed on a J=2 resonant component underneath. The relationship between these resonances and the well-known quasimolecular resonances as well as resonances in breakup and electrofission of 24Mg into two 12C nuclei are discussed.

Abstract

A new experiment to determine the thermonuclear cross section of the C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction has been performed in regular kinematics using an intense alpha-particle beam of up to 340 mu A from the Stuttgart DYNAMITRON. For the first time, a 4 pi-germanium-detector setup has been used to measure the angular distribution of the gamma rays at all angles simultaneously. It consisted of an array of nine EUROGAM high-purity Ge detectors in close geometry, actively shielded individually with bismuth germanate crystals. The C-12 targets were isotopically enriched by magnetic separation during implantation. The depth profiles of the implanted carbon in the C-12 targets were determined by Rutherford backscattering for purposes of cross-section normalization and absolute determination of the E1 and E2 S factors. Angular distributions of the gamma decay to the O-16 ground state were measured in the energy range E-c.m.=1.30-2.78 MeV and in the angular range (lab.) 30 degrees-130 degrees. From these distributions, astrophysical E1 and E2 S-factor functions vs energy were calculated, both of which are indispensable to the modeling of this reaction and the extrapolation toward lower energies. The separation of the E1 and E2 capture channels was done both by taking the phase value phi(12) as a free parameter and by fixing it using the results of elastic alpha-particle scattering on C-12 in the same energy range.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; The $^{92-96}$Zr nuclei were produced as fission fragments following the fusion reactions $^{28}$Si+$^{176}$Yb and $^{31}$P+$^{176}$Yb at 145 and 152 MeV bombarding energy, respectively. Prompt $\gamma$ rays emitted in the two reactions were detected with the EUROGAM II and EUROBALL IV arrays. Sequences of $\gamma$-ray transitions observed in coincidence were newly assigned to $^{93-96}$Zr. The previously known level schemes have been extended to higher excitation energies and higher spins. The experimental results are discussed in the framework of shell-model calculations with $^{88}$Sr assumed to be an inert core and the valence protons and neutrons filling the $\pi(2_{p1/2},1g_{9/2})$ and $\nu(2d_{5/2},3s_{1/2})$ orbitals.

Abstract

Experimental results on the fusion inhibition effect near the Coulomb barrier due to the onset of the quasi-fission mechanism are presented. The investigation was focused on reactions induced by 48Ca projectiles on different heavy targets and comparing them to reactions induced by light ions such as ^12C and ^16O leading to the same compound nuclei. Cross sections and angular distributions of evaporation residues and fission fragments have been measured.

Abstract

Measurements of fusion-evaporation cross-sections for the system Ca-48 + Sm-154 have been performed in the sub- and near-barrier energy range. Barrier-passing cross-sections have been obtained by adding recently measured capture-fission cross-sections at the same energies, and the barrier distribution for capture has been extracted. The data have been analyzed within a coupled-channel model, and a large subbarrier cross-section enhancement is observed, due to the ground-state prolate deformation of Sm-154. The Ca-48 + Sm-154 capture cross-sections are compared to existing data on O-16 + W-186 fusion. leading to the same CN. where a few higher-energy points have also been measured. The evaporation residue cross-sections for the two systems above the barrier indicate that complete fusion is inhibited for Ca-48 + Sm-154 by approximate to 40% in that energ, region, with respect to O-16 + W-186.

Recent experimental data on relatively mass-asymmetric collisions show that fusion hindrance can be explained in terms of the onset of quasi-fission reactions. The influence of mass-asymmetry, shell effects and target deformation on such phenomena is presented and possible implications for super-heavy element production are discussed.

The astrophysical reaction rate of the key reaction 12C(alpha,gamma)16O has been determined with the +/- 25% accuracy by two direct experiments at the Stuttgart DYNAMITRON in the framework of a large internatiuonal collaboration. The E1 and E2 capture amplitudes were deduced from 37 new gamma angular distributions in the energy range Ecm = 0.89-2.8 MeV. Highest sensitivity at a picobarn level was reached by using either a close 4pi array of 9 EUROGAM Phase II detectors or the GANDI array of 4 large movable Ge detectors. The S-factor values of the S_E1 and S_E2 excitation functions were calculated by a R-matrix analysis considering also elastic alpha-scattering data and the beta-delayed alpha-decay on 16N.

Abstract

A novel method of deducing the deformation of the N=Z nucleus Sr-76 is presented. It is based on the comparison of the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution B(GT) from its beta decay with the results of quasi-random-phase approximation calculations. This method confirms previous indications of the strong prolate deformation of this nucleus in a totally independent way. The measurement has been carried out with a large total absorption gamma spectrometer, "Lucrecia," newly installed at CERN-ISOLDE.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; Linking transitions between the superdeformed (SD) and the normal deformed (ND) wells have been searched in $^{151}$Tb nucleus. Two experiments of 5 and 17 days have been performed with EUROBALL IV. Transitions of 2818 keV and 3748 keV with intensities of about 1 % relative to the yrast SD band have been observed. Their decay-out properties are discussed in the text. In addition the eight known SD bands have been extended towards higher rotational frequencies where orbital crossings are observed. For the first time, weakly populated collective ND structures, likely triaxial, similar to the ones recently identified in $^{152}$Dy, $^{153}$Ho and ${155}$Er nuclei have been observed in ${151}$Tb. The SD and ND structures are interpreted in the frame of Woods-Saxon theoretical calculations.

8 pages, 5 figures.-- PACS nrs.: 21.10.Pc, 23.40.Hc, 27.50.+e., A total absorption spectrometer, dedicated to the study of very short-lived atomic species, has been built and installed at the CERN/ISOLDE mass separator. The beta decay of the neutron-deficient Kr-74 nucleus has been studied using this new device. The Gamow-Teller strength distribution has been observed over most of the Q(EC) window, and a total strength of 0.69(3) g(A)(2)/4pi has been measured for states with excitation energy below 3 MeV. Shape mixing in the Kr-74 ground state is inferred from a comparison of the experimental strength distribution with self-consistent, deformed, quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation calculations., This work has been partly supported by EPSRC(UK), by the IN2P3 /CNRS (France) and CICYT (Spain) under Contract Nos.
